National Coney Island is a fixture in Metro Detroit. I'm pretty sure that if you've lived in the Detroit area for any amount of time, you've been in a National or been exposed to it in some form. Even if you think you haven't, you've probably had chili from here because it's sold in almost every other Coney-style restaurant in town. At any rate, this is not a review per se; it's me sharing my experience of this particular National. I've been in many National restaurants and this one was, by far, the cleanest and sharpest I've been in. Every aspect of the restaurant, from the front door glass to the bathroom sink, was spotless and clean. The booths and table lacked that "greasy" feel that most restaurants in this genre possess, the floors weren't slippery, and even the staff was clean-cut and fully upright. I'm not a huge fan of National's food, that's the only reason I'm making this a three-star review. However, there is a lot to be said for convenience and predictability; both of which National possesses in scads. This particular National happened to be across the street from the tire place we were stuck at for a while. Through the magic combination of "we have to walk" and "cheap", we ended up here, and I'm glad I did. Full belly, low bill, clean restaurant, nice staff. Sometimes, that's all a man needs.

To begin with, the 3 star rating is more about the kind of restaurant this is rather than a reflection of my experience here. I don't think I could really rate a diner as anything above that unless it was exceptionally awesome. National Coney Island was not exceptionally awesome, but it wasn't bad either. It was definitely better than a 2, and even a 2 is just a "meh". Meh implies more of an apathy than an outright hatred. 3, however, is "A-OK". According to Yelp, anyway... and since we're under Yelp's roof at the moment, we'll follow Yelp's rules. There was a big group of us, somewhere between 11 and 15 people, the day I ate here. Our server was very nice and rather bubbly. When I asked her if my request to have black olives added to my veggie burger (yes, yes I had the veggie burger) was weird, she responded: "Yeah, it's a little weird... but that's cool". It didn't come off as rude or condescending in the least bit; she just seemed friendly. I've mentioned before in other reviews that I hate making odd requests because of the way wait staff stares at me, but she did not make me uncomfortable at all. She was a winner in my book. As for the veggie burger itself... well, I've always promised myself I would never allow one of those things to pass my lips, but my boyfriend wouldn't let me eat fries for lunch. I suppose that was for the best, but in any case, the sandwich was okay for what it was. I'm not a fan of the idea of veggie burgers; they're so sad with that whole trying-to-be-something-they're-not thing. I like grains and veggies on their own, and don't need them compressed in to a meatless meat-patty substitute. In that sense I am, admittedly, very biased. If pressed, though, I'd eat the "burger" again. It tasted fine, and didn't make me sick or anything. I'd call that a triumph. In regards to the establishment itself, I don't recall it being dirty or rundown. It was warm and comfortable, and I had fun being there with some great people. If the same set of circumstances that took me here the first time arose again, I would not be put out in the least.

Before golf breakfast. I needed something to eat before golf for plenty of energy. I had my typical breakfast, hash browns, toast, bacon and plenty of coffee. The hash browns were fresh prepared and hot, toast perfect, and bacon could have been a little hotter and freshly cooked. Not bad, just what I had hoped and expected for this chain. Dawn was friendly, fast and always kept my cup full and hot.

More expanded menu than I expected. Food was good, hot and cheap. Nothing outstanding, but no complaints. Service was lacking, though. There were not enough wait staff, so visits were few and far between, and our lunch ended up taking much too long because of that. And considering I had my 2 kids with me (4&2) that was a problem.

I have been here twice now and I am in no rush to go back. The prices are not great, the food is below par and the place is always empty. Maybe I have those out of order. The place is always empty because of all of the other reasons. Places like National Coney Island used to have deals like cheap hot dogs (Coney Islands) on one day of the week, and for something like that, it would be worth spending very little to get very little. But when I asked what day they offer the cheap Coney Islands, the waitress told me that they no longer offer that. I looked at the empty counter and the empty booths and I guess I wasn't surprised. Too bad.

My husband and I used to eat here a lot when we were in school. We would want something quick, inexpensive, and tasted good. This National Coney Island offered all of that. The restaurant is really nicely lit, with a huge dining room. We were seated quickly and our waitress took our order right away. This is how we remembered the service being 5 years ago. I also noticed that this Coney Island location is so clean. The tables are wiped clean, the floor is sparkling, the bathrooms were clean, our silverware was clean...it always makes me feel more comfortable and trusting of the kitchen. We ordered a chicken lemon rice soup to share. It was the perfect amount of lemon and hearty! I was so full, I could barely eat my veggie omelette. I ordered that with hash browns and wheat toast. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. My husband got the Hani combo, with fries. The fries were fresh and our waitress brought out all the random condiments he orders. All of our dishes were brought out promptly and were served fresh. We will definitely come back and visit this location when we're in the area.

Pretty good as far as coney islands go. I got a patty melt on sourdough with thousand island (if you've ever had the frisco melt from Steak 'n Shake it's the same thing), and a cup of chicken lemon rice with a grilled side pita. The pita was delicious and fluffy, and the soup was tasty too. Overall the food was good. The patty melt was a little too greasy, but overall good. Also they give you a free mint at the end. Busy place for lunch the whole restaurant was full

Cheap, yummy and NCI uses meatless chili that could fool just about anyone. I love that I can have chili fries and not feel sick 5 minuets later. I love national coney island!

Not gonna lie...I could eat here twice a week and never get sick of it! Love the pancakes, omelets and the HANI with fries. Can't go wrong for a cheap, greasy night out! Plus, the service is always fast and friendly.

A cross-border trip isn't complete until you've visited that All-American Diner and in our case it happened to be at National Coney Island in Troy, Michigan. We even sat at the counter rather than the dining area which adds to the feel of it all since the 4 waitresses in full uniform ran about while the manager/expediter watched over the 2-3 cooks behind the ladies. Maybe the Nostalgia talking but it's pretty cool for a foreigner to visit an American Diner. Coney Hot Dog(This is what we're famous for! Served with Chili, Mustard and Onions in a steamed Bun) - While the Natural Casing Hot Dog did give a snap, it's not the kind that you'll get from Sausages but nonetheless it's still something enjoyable and different from the Schneider's or Maple Leaf Weiners we get in Toronto. The Chili is the Beanless variety and probably used Beef Hearts as I've read somewhere, which means it's not as spicy addictive but rather a typical Fast Food Chili taste with slight off flavours rather than savouriness. Let's just call it an acquired taste. I can't say I enjoyed the Hot Dog more with Chili on it but I love how they piled on the chopped Onions and added Yellow Mustard which are my usual choices of condiment. This ends my 48 hours in Metro Detroit tasting some local flavours. Maybe if I was a local I would have given these reviews very different star ratings but as it stands I hope it's useful, funny, cool for a select few out there.

I had it at four because it was a nice decent place but after my last visit I can say I wouldn't really want to go back. Usually service is good during lunch time and most waiters are nice but my last server really had me taking a second look at this place. Honestly this food is mediocre as one would expect but the service really ruined it for me... Not a place I would recommend

Overall Feedback: Came to Troy, Michigan, solo for business. The last night here I decided to search for a coney dog. FOund this one..amongst many coney islands options. A pretty good spot, check it out. The staff was cool to chat with. I started with one coney dog and it was very tasty, with a nice lemonade. The staff was inviting, nice and clean.... so I got a second coney. Service: There were booths available and a small little bar when you walk in. I sat at the bar and the staff was super cool. They helped me find the good stuff on the menu. I did not expect to have conversation with the staff cooks behind the bar, it was pretty fun to kick back with them while ate. Food: Get a coney, its delicious. I got another item on the menu, taco sandwich type thing...it was also very good. Inexpensive diner. Definitely check out this place for the famous Michigan Coney Dog. You just got Yelp'd -Joe
