I really like this place. It is authentic and small. They have about 20 different lunch specials which all come with rice, beans and chips/salsa for under $10. Today I got the two taco meal with just veggies and the hot salsa, which is HOT. Delicious. They also sell tamales over the counter. Small and intimate, get there early if you want a seat.

As an authentic Mexican myself lol. I must say this food has the real Mexican taste. Maybe some exceptions that have been tropicalized in order to be good for the American market. For example the salsa is not that hot and they have flour tortillas. But it is still good. I like the pastor tacos and la torta de carnitas. The administrators are very nice people too!

This place is wonderful. It's small yet full of life. The staff is extremely friendly and the restaurant was very clean. I ordered the chicken fajitas which were delicious. There was a great helping of veggies beneath the chicken, soft flour tortillas, and a small platter with beans, rice, and pico. The guacamole was also very satisfying and packed with flavor. The prices were fair and the helpings were generous. I will definitely go there again.

Very good little diner. For seating, there are 4 four tops and 5 two tops. Very authentic, not greasy, and very tasty. Serving are a good size and you will definitely leave feeling full.

I have KVETCHED forever that there is no decent mexican food in michigan.. Even downtown can go wrong if you're not careful.... But here it is, my new favorite Mexican outside of Chicago! Really, REALLY good. I went with the combo dinner: 1 taco, 1 tamale and 1 enchilada... All chicken. I judge mexican on two things: lightness of the tamale and quality of the salsas and/or sauces. 5 stars for all of the above. This is a super casual, half take-out place, so no dressing up. You're coming here for the food. You're welcome in advance!

This a great Mexican restaurant. They make the best fajitas. I wanted to share with the public how great my experience was with them. If you're craving Mexican food this is the place to grab it from.

My family has been going to this restaurant for a LONG time! We love coming here it's always a good experience and were never disappointed in the food I'm adopted my family is Caucasian and I'm Hispanic so coming to la botana is always a great choice because the food is unlike any other Mexican restaurant I've been too!

Delicious authentic Mexican food! This restaurant is located in a little strip mall across from Kensington church. When you walk there is a little seating area and it is very colorful. Over the past few months, my family and I have become regulars here whenever we crave good Latino food. My order consists of the wet burrito with chicken. It is a huge serving and lasts me for about two days. The chicken is very fresh and tastes clean. The rice is soft and has good seasoning. The veggies within the burrito are crunchy too. The only warning I would add about the wet burrito is that the red sauce that is placed on the top will stain your fingers/table so make sure to just keep that in mind. The little staining is defiantly worth the deliciousness though in my opinion. They have great tacos too!

Solid Mexican food! Great enchiladas rojos. Also, a plus that they serve Mexican beers. A hidden little gem.

The order: Two taco dinners (three tacos a piece) x2 Al Pastor tacos x2 Carnitas tacos Carne asada taco Pollo taco x2 rice x2 beans One of each tamale (three total) A small order of the cheesy Mexican fries (or something like that) My girlfriend and I split all of that... gluttons and proud of it. The total was a kind of shocking $37. A day earlier we got basically identical orders at Carnival Market in Pontiac (minus the tamales) for just $20. On the plus side (I guess), you can get 15% off your order with a Yelp coupon. Sort of a pain in the ass trying to decide what to rate La Botana ... either a three or a four. What nearly made me give it a three is the fact that if you don't get chicken or ground beef tacos, you're charged a dollar extra *per taco* for any other meat. Really...? That's a bit excessive and bothered us both right away. Okay, the food, the food... it's pretty good. The complimentary chips and salsa you're given are above average... both the mild and medium salsas were obviously freshly made. They probably maybe have a hot salsa, but you may need to ask for it. The Mexican fries are french fries with queso, chorizo, sour cream, jalapenos... and maybe some other stuff. Far from authentic, but tasty anyway. My natural comparison is Carnival Market since I had it the day before... Carnival Market's fries were better (the chicken and salsa blanca on those fries were incredible), but the ones here are still addictingly artery clogging. The tamales were $3 a piece, which is also about twice the price of some other places in a 20 mile radius. They weren't bad at all, but weren't filled all that much, making the price confusing. The tacos were, unsurprisingly, pretty decent... but knowing I was charged about twice the price per taco because I didn't want PEASANT MEAT (ground beef) was hanging on me with every bite. The carne asada had good flavor, but could have done without the tablespoon of salt that it seemed my taco had on it... if you haven't experienced a "sodium headache", you will if you eat three of them. The chicken was a little dry and could have used more flavor. The carnitas was best, followed by the al pastor, I think... it's also worth saying that I really liked the rice and beans here, more so than the ones at -- my favorite comparison -- Carnival Market. The rice, beans, pork (carnitas and al pastor), and fries were the best things here... the total price will probably keep me from driving out of the way to come here very often, because I expected more value. In response to Susan: If that were the case, I should have been made known I was going to save money if I were to get the dinners, which I thought I specified I wanted in the first place.

I ordered $75 worth of food here for 5 of us. It was not worth it. The nachos was super soggy. The chorizo in our tacos was dry. We ordered some botana fries dish, it was terrible. We threw it out. I would have gotten better food from Taco Bell for a third of the price. We were all disappointed. We will not be ordering from here.

Solid little place. Got the sampler dinner for my first try. Tamale, burrito, two tacos (Chorizo), and chips n salsa. Tried all the sauces I could, no complaints on any of the food. Will be back again to try more and add to this review. Chorizo tacos were very good. Good Verde sauce!

Came here because of a referral. I can't believe how good this place is!! The salsa was nice a spicy making it perfect for my boyfriend and I. I got the beef quesadilla and he got the shrimp fajita which were both equally as good. I highly recommend this place and will be back soon!!

We've only been here once, so I reserve the right to change my rating. We got a dozen tacos, four each of asada, chorizo, and el pastor. Also got guac and salsa. Tacos were very average, albeit "authentic." I expect much more at $3 per. Salsa was very good and also very spicy. Guac was solid, but cut with tomatoes (boo). I'll go back, but expect to overpay for average quality. Operation was very professional and efficient. Clean and very prompt.

Finally. Authentic food. We opened the door to the modest store front and knew immediately that it was going to be good. It smelled like authentic food was cooking. You order from the counter and then they'll bring your food out. Real Coke and other soda's are available by the bottle too. The salsa is excellent. They'll bring mild to the table and medium but you'll need to ask for the hot, which they are "spicy". It's flavorful and hot too.

Unfortunately, I have to update my review. Been here a couple more times since, and everything is still amazing like before -- except the steak. It's not the highest quality steak (shouldn't really come as a surprise I guess), and well, your stomach is going to be really mad for hours afterward. When my brother and I both got different steak entrees, we were both regretting it. Still amazing guacamole, chips/salsa, etc, etc. Just be warned with the steak.

Really good food and service. The people working there are so nice. Food is always on point!

Yelp led me here. Taste will bring me back. Tucked in a strip mall is this great establishment. Traditional Mexican everthing with a quality result. I ordered the enchiladas verdes. Best decision of my day. As a long time fan of grand aztecas everywhere, I was wondering how they compared. Turns out these are superior. The chicken was tender, juicy and full of flavor. It could stand alone. The verde sauce was tomatillo lime magic. It was so bright and flavorful, it was like a burst of sunshine. Remember gushers fruit snacks (anyone?) Well its like that. You know its there but when you taste it you get giddy. Rice and beans were good quality. Sour cream was just made or tasted like it. That's a huge plus. It's not a dollup of Daisy, that's for sure. The only reason they get 4 stars is the portion size of mine. For $9 the plate was a bit small...Don't get me wrong I was definitely full to the max with food to take home. I saw other people's and theirs looked like more so it could have just been mine. Overall, make the trek here. You will be happy!!

  • Vikram V.

So happy this mexican place opened up around the corner from me. Although the chimichangas and enchiladas are on point for me, the prices have gone up and the quantity of food has gone down. The chips and mild salsa are also great to try out. However, they are only complementary when you dine in so I recommend this over carrying out if you are trying this place for the first time. It's a small, quiet, and nice setting. Overall, the quality of the food is still there but cheaper alternatives in the area are often more favorable for me in recent times.

Here's a simple review 1) Fantastic authentic mexican food. Tastes incredibly good every time I go. (I've been there so much!) I've have not been disappointed with anything on the menu. 2) Friendly and inviting staff. They speak good English, but better Spanish. 3) Small quiet restaurant and you can get a plate of plenty of food for under 10-15 bucks! Overall? 5 out of 5. Despite it's very small size, it's the best Mexican restaurant in Troy. I've never been disappointed. Feel free to carry out too if you'd like. My recommendation? Burritos, enchiladas, torta sandwich (my favorite), tacos, everything

  • Esteban G.

Great authentic Mexican food. I have ordered a variety of the specials and never disappointed. Tamales, chizio and eggs, to gorditas are very good. You get chips and a variety of salsa that I have ordered to go. Mexican Coke and jarritos are all available in a glass bottle. Not a fancy restaurant but it is a good place for the family. Se habla espanol

    (4)
  • Shobana K.

Great fresh tasting Mexican food! I usually order the veggie botana, burrito, or quesadilla. It's a small place, so we usually do carry-out.

  • Phil K.

Awesome Mexican food. I don't think it's as good as Taqueria Lupita in Mexicantown, but it's pretty close. It definitely has a feel of a home cooked meal. I've ordered several things on the menu and have never been disappointed. Tacos are good, so are the enchiladas and tamales. I tried the newer Birria dinner (shredded beef in red sauce) and it was really good as well. I live in Troy, about a mile away, and I know I will be back often. I just hope my waistline survives. :-)

Coming from California and have been to Mexico more than a billion times. I have been spoiled to real Mexican food. I have been to "Spanish" town and have dined in a few "authentic" Mexican restaurants. Nothing in Michigan can ever come close to California's Mexican food. This place takes the golden medal.. Not only are they ALL Mexican working here but they all know the language and are hard core Mexicans not current generation "Mexican Americans". The food is straight up cooked to Hispanic culture with no short cuts using any type of radioactive boxes. It's a long drive to get to this place but believe me it's well worth it. A bit on the smaller size for sitting and eating but you will not get food ANYWHERE in Michigan this close to the border. Gracias para la comida. Vuelve de para más. :-)

  • Andrew T.

Service was extremely friendly and prompt, food was excellent (the Mexican Nacho, my wife and I agreed, was the best we'd ever had), and the music playing in the dining room was the real deal. The only thing keeping me from giving a whole hearted 5-stars is the drink situation - all packaged sodas, etc., no fountain drinks/refills. Definitely check this place out!

  • Corina M.

Most likely the best mexican food around! Super friendly staff. Great place. I will most definitely be back!

Finally I found a place I don't have to go all the way through Southwest Detroit for this place has the best Mexican food I have ever tried.their prices are very fair and the people are very very nice.they also have Mexican candy which is my favorite so that's why they're doing this review because I love Mexican candy.I haven't found a place in Troy that has Mexican candy and then I found this place they had Mexican candy. And they have the best quesadilla.

I came here one other time and didn't quite get the hype. But today, mmmmmm. Very delicious. Flautas are wonderful. And, amazingly, they sell beer. Nice experience.

  • April J.

Best carry out authentic mexican food around. The enchiladas are fantastic, but honestly I've never had anything less than great here. We always order a small salsa and a large guacamole on the side. You can eat in, but it's just a few plastic tables and chairs. The staff is super friendly.

  • Leah F.

This place has hands down the best steak fajitas known to man. I have travelled all over the country and spent lots of time in California where you would guess the food would be great, but nothing comes close to the fajitas at La Botana. Super friendly staff, great chips and salsa, authentic Mexican treats! This place is in a random little strip mall but is totally amazing and worth a visit :)

This place make best Mexican food in this area. Staff is very friendly and polite.

  • Noelle F.

I was sorely disappointed by La Botana. I enjoy good Mexican food and this was not it. The chips and salsa ended up being the best part of the meal, which is pretty telling. I ordered chicken tostadas, which are my go-to Mexican food. The fried tortillas were incredibly stale and the chicken tasted sour. Each thing alone would have made the food hard to stomach, but the combination of the two made the food particularly awful. The beans and rice were palatable, but nothing spectacular. I would not recommend La Botana at all. There is much better Mexican food in Troy.

This place is a nice surprise. I've driven by many times and wondered about it. I finally looked it up on Yelp and decided to give it a try because the reviews were so good. The food was excellent. Everything was fresh and really authentic. It's quite small inside, so might function better as a carry-out sort of place. I think there were only 4 tables. We did end up dining inside, but next time we'll just go pick it up. I will definitely be returning here.

Maybe I'm being little harsh, coming from San Diego, this doesn't cut it. El taco Gordo really set the bar for me. I really didn't like anything from here.

  • Bill B.

I had meaning to go here for a while and, tonight, my wife and I finally got the chance. Wow. I was blown away with everything I had tonight. The guacamole was perfect in consistency and balance of avocado, tomatoes and onions. The chips were crispy and not salted. Dipping sauces were refreshingly thin and spiced well. My veggie burrito had a comforting mildness but fine taste. The topper is the tres leche cake, nicely cool and gooey with a pleasing sweetness (I am a pie person who usually does not like cake). The room is small and very casual with a kind of family feel. The guys behind the counter and bringing out the food seem very nice and sincere. La Botana has an elegant simplicity that speaks louder than gastronomic fireworks. It is without doubt the best Mexican food I've had in this area for many, many years.

  • Kevin G.

If you know me, you know I'm picky as F%#€ when it comes to my food. Especially my chicken... This place was the BOMB. When it comes to authentic Mexican food, this place is it. Everything tastes like the made it fresh within the hour. From their guacamole, to their hard tacos, everything is fresh, high quality, and delicious!

    (5)
  • Michael L.

Most authentic Mexican food around! I live out west for years and this is the best place in the metro Detroit area. The guys there are nice and the place is clean. Don't bother going anyplace else!

    (5)
  • Chris D.

The food was fresh, but lacking flavor. A little too bland to be honest. Clean place and nice employees. They need to step it up to be really good, but has potential.

The best chicken fajita I ever had!! Awesome mild, medium and hot sauces for the chips.

  • Sonali B.

When my brother suggested we grab at La Botana, I was a little hesitant. We'd driven by it a thousand times and never thought to go inside. I'm extremely happy I went. From the minute you walk inside La Botana, everything is sparkling clean, organized and extremely welcoming. It's got about 5-6 tables so it's a cozy environment to say the least but the people eating happily are a good indication that the meal you're going to have is fantastic. We stopped in for lunch and had the Chorizo tacos (flour tortillas), enchiladas rojas and enchiladas verdes. Everything was phenomenal and most importantly - fresh. We go to a lot of Mexican eateries in the suburbs and most of them are God-awful. I used to visit Azteca but everything was dripping in oil so my days there ended rather abruptly. The meal starts with a bunch of salsas (three varieties, all fresh) and chips. You can choose from a large selection of beverages. We chose two lime Jarritos as well as a tamarind flavor - we were in heaven. The prices were fair, the service was good and there was enough to choose from for the vegetarians in our group. All in all, I'm very happy and will be returning very soon.

Moving to michigan from downtown Chicago, I was skeptical of ever finding a great authentic Mexican restaurant that you can find at any corner in Chicago. La Botana is it!!!!! Great food at great prices. I would even go as far as saying better than any spot in Mexican town in detroit. I would recommend to anyone looking for that authentic taste. The salsa is also fantastic with great heat!

We've recently moved to the Troy area and found this little gem on yelp. Love at first bite. Dare I say it? Yes-- when I scooped up that bite of guacamole!! We've been here a mere couple dozen times since. I even had my sweetie pick up some guacamole and chips for my girls night last weekend. Thumbs up, amigos!

  • Kaden C.

I really liked the food here. Great nachos and the Chimichanga was awesome! I can't speak to authenticity but I know that the guys there speak Spanish and the food was good. Definitely fresh. They make it right there. Good stuff!

    (5)
  • Chris A.

Can I give zero stars? This place was atrocious. Went out looking for nachos and good mexican. The nachos were watered down and had some sloppy ground beef. The chimichangas were saltier than the ocean. I've never gone out of my way to tell an employee how bad the food was until I came to this place. Do not ever come here

    (1)
  • Naomi D.

Seriously some of the best Mexican food you will eat, their sign says it all "best Mexican food in town!" They have large portions that fill you up and choices upon choices! You can also choose what type if meat you would like! The quesadilla was AMAZING! Defiantly recommend it! If you're looking for a great Mexican place this is it! Great prices, great food!

    (5)
  • Rebecca C.

Yum yum yum! Great food place is small but the food is worth it! Nice variety of Jarritos (my favorite is the tangerina)! Wonderful service! Make sure to use the 15% off yelp offer too!

  • Regan L.

this place has, hands down, THE best tacos in the area! i live 30 minutes away (and live closer to Mexicantown, i might add) and drive out there just for the food. staff is absolutely wonderful, very friendly, and they always remember their regulars. tacos al pastor, the beef chimichanga, and their chicken and pork tamales are unsurpassed, not to mention the sumptuous desserts (three words: TRES LECHES CAKE). extensive selection of bottled soft drinks, including MexiCokes and every flavor of Jarritos under the sun; they even have a small selection of Mexican candies (Pulparindo, anyone?). i've brought many lost souls strung out on Taco Bell to La Botana and they have never looked back!

Props to Kurt H. for the spot on review & suggestion. Now living on the Shelby - Troy - Rochester Hills Border She-Oy-Hills, I'm looking for some of my new & future favorites. Fernando & his crew, blessed me with their hospitality & patience as we ordered at 2pm on Sunday I chose the 3 hard shell taco dinner, with beans & beans, also mixed & matched the tacos, having a pork, chicken & ground beef all were excellent, Loved the shells! Also the beans were smooth & light & did not bog me down like so many other places! My Bride ordered the Grilled Chicken quesadilla , which was perfect! Fernando, even brought over a grilled steak taco served Mexican Style , on a corn tortilla for us to sample BUENO! wonderful little gem!

Went as an alternative to our closest Mexican restaurant. This place has a great feel, and the food was at least as good, or better than all of the other local Mexican places.

Fresh tasty food, and very friendly staff. We have become regulars.

The burrito is below average. Everything is overpriced. I'd rather eat Chipotle or Qdoba.

If you want authentic and delicious Mexican food come here. All of the salsa is fresh and /addictive/. The service is friendly and quick (when they aren't busy, but hey you know it's good when there're people waiting). I typically order the tamales dinner and I am never disappointed, they even remembered my order when I walked in after several weeks of orders. The tamales are simple, perfect and delicious. Great home-cooked taste and you can order them by the dozen! Prices are low enough to make it a regular spot, and they carry my favorite Jarritos flavor (tamarindo). The 'Mexican style' tacos are also amazing, and my boyfriend's go to favorite. He orders them a la carte with the spicy and mild salsas. But they hardly need salsa, really. Favorite Mexican restaurant in SE Michigan.

  • Susan W.

I lived in San Diego and this place is just like taco places there (which is a good thing). Order at the counter and they bring it to your table. (I think they bus the table, too.) It's not fancy, but it's clean, cheap, and good!

  • Lawrence H.

This probably the most over used phrase on Yelp especially when it comes to Mexican cuisine. But, La Botana fits the bill of a true, authentic Mexican Restraunt. The food, the quiet, cozy atmosphere and the staff give you a sense of being in Mexico itself. The food is amazing, the staff treats you like family and the place is the best. It is a must try for anyone looking for good Mexican cuisine.

I don't know what all the good reviews are for, my Carne Asada tacos where the worst all I could taste was cilantro, three thumbs down.

  • Gary H.

Excellent very authentic Mexican food, having lived in Los Angeles for 10 years it is extremely hard to find good Mexican food but this place is awesome, and a worthwhile venture no matter where you love in the Metro Detroit area!

  • Andrew H.

If you want mediocre Americanized "Mexican" food, come here. All of their tortillas are very dry and generic tasting. Almost have a store bought taste to them. The meat is not flavorful by Mexican food standards. Only reason I'm giving this two stars is because the tres leches cake is pretty good. Id go there to get that alone. But as far as authentic Mexican food goes, look elsewhere.

    (2)
  • Beverly C.

Great staff but I thought the food was just ok. I would go back but I wouldn't crave it.

    (3)
  • Sterling H.

Tried the shrimp fajitas, mexican nachos, and the chicken chimichanga. For Americanized Mexican food, it was pretty damn good. The mild and medium salsas were too hot for the wife and kids, so I got to eat all of it. I liked the frijoles best, super light and creamy. The arroz/guac/pico de gallo was very good too. I was apprehensive when a young Japanese waiter seated us, but later I heard all of the other employees/owner speaking Spanish. The nachos were a little cold, but good tasting. The fajitas wasn't bad, but also not the best that I have ever had. The chimichanga had a good sauce, and tasted like it was fried in fresh oil. The cubed chicken in it was just ok. The bill came to $46 for three people, a little steep for Mexican, but I would return. Definitely. The Mexican food that I have had in Mexico is not very similar to "Mexican" here. I can't see why other Yelpers say this is authentic Mexican. Fajitas and chimichangas are Tex-Mex fare, reportedly invented in Arizona.

Yum!!!! In the area from out of town and was trying to visit a restaurant that was in the same plaza. The other one was closed but I'm GLAD. Delicious food and friendly service!!

My wife and I still whine constantly about the scarcity of Mexican restaurants in Detroit relative to our native homeland in the Southwest. So when the possibility arises for a tasty reminder of home we have to check it out. We headed to La Botana after I noticed a new name on my Mexican restaurant search that did not include the words Del, Taco, or Bell. As luck would have it I also got the Troy throw-away coupon magazine the same day and there was a buy one get one free deal for La Botana! I chose to go for a massively stuffed wet burrito. Carne asada, beans, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro, sour cream, and smothered with red sauce and a little more queso on top. Take that seven layer burrito! This was an excellent little food baby after I hadn't eaten anything all day. The meat was tender, the red sauce added a little zing and the guac was tasty. As for the chips and salsa, we ate two servings, so I think we liked them. I would call the salsa thin but not watery. It is not a chunky style salsa if you know what I mean. It is actually packed with nice chile flavor and I think I would be willing to pour it on most of the food that I eat. The restaurant itself is quite small and all but one table for two was taken when we arrived. You walk up and order at the counter and then sit and wait while you munch your chips and salsa. Both owners (pictured on the Troy coupon) were working the counter while we were there. I will definitely have to go back to try out some tacos... mmmmmm.. tacos.. it's 2 am and now I want tacos but I'm at work so I can't have any!!!!! Oh well, maybe in the morning I will make the drive out, they claim to have a breakfast menu... Also they apparently have a facebook page. Do links work in yelp reviews? Oh well, here it goes facebook.com/notes.php?s…

Honestly the BEST Mexican food I have had in years. I only stopped by because it had gotten great reviews on yelp. I was nervous when I pulled in (strip shopping center) but the food was absolutely amazing. Authentic Mexican food.

Authentic Mexican food finally makes it to Troy. I originally from California and the closest I could get to real Mexican food was downtown in Mexican Village. Not any more. Prices are reasonable and the food is great.

Tiny little place, HUGE flavor. Was like eating in mexican food in Texas.

  • Nancy M.

La Botana is a little hidden gem in Troy. We have been back several times and thought it was about time to write a review. We have tried everything from burritos, flatuas, and chicken fajitas. Hands down the chicken fajitas are awesome as are the flatuas. We tried a tostado with chorizo and that was delicious. Service is always friendly and outstanding. The basket of chips is more than enough and their mild and medium salsas are great. Our only wish is that they had fountain pop! Water is readily available. Prices are reasonable and LaBotana hands down beats Taco Bell, Del Taco, Azteca, and even the newest place ElCharro on Rochester Road. Enjoy!

  • Jennifer H.

It's not a big place, the decor doesn't scream "mexican restaurant," you don't get unlimited chips and salsa, and you have to order at the counter...but I can overlook all of that because the food is pretty darn good and the service is excellent! From reading that they have a small menu, I was thinking there would be like eight things on it or something, but there's a lot more than that! No, it's not like the 8 big full pages at Azteca, but there is definitely enough to choose from--from enchiladas to burritos to quesadillas...plus a handful of appetizers and desserts. I got the wet burrito, hubby got some enchiladas, and we got a side of guacamole. Once we ordered, our basket of chips and salsa were brought out--and I asked if we could have our guac then, too, and he smiled and ran off to get it! The chips were nice and crispy with just a touch of salt--and the salsa, while a bit on the thin side, was DELICIOUS! It was just a tad spicy, but not enough to be uncomfortable--just how I like it. The guac was great, too--creamy and very flavorful. The wet burrito was huge and tasty--though I wasn't a big fan of the red sauce it was covered in. Hubby said his enchiladas were okay (but I put some of the blame on him because he doesn't like corn tortillas but I forgot to ask if they could make them with flour tortillas instead). The service was quite good--we had our chips/salsa within moments after ordering, drinks shortly thereafter (we just wanted tap water, which was chilling in the cooler), and our meals maybe five minutes later (though I wasn't timing it). Someone also came out to check on us and to ask if everything was okay. When I complimented the salsa and guac, I was asked if we wanted more salsa...so maybe you can get additional salsa at no cost...but we didn't need any so said no thank you. For me, the cons are no unlimited chips and salsa (understandable since it's a small place, but they are so good I could eat a ton--though you can buy more as sides) and their use of plastic plates/silverware/cups (not very green)...but I can overlook those small things for the good food and good service. And I'm looking forward to our next visit where hubby promised I could try the Tres Leches dessert...

Authentic and delicious! The only place my wife will go to for Mexican food in Michigan so far (she's from New Mexico, so she knows what she is talking about!). After three years in southern California, I am glad there is a local place I can go to get a real burrito.

Easily the best Mexican food I have ever had. Try to get here anytime I can. Worth the 25 minute drive for me and my wife. Nothing fancy, just great flavorful Mexican food. No gimmicks. Sensibly priced and a very friendly staff. Keep up the great food!

Just tried this place with my (picky) girlfriend. She got the Veggie Burrito and loved it. I had the Gorditas which I thought were great. The staff was Amazing. Friendly and attentive. The facility was clean and welcoming, although I could see the table we sat at getting cold in the winter months being right near the door.

Their tacos range from decent (chorizo, pastor) to awful (carne asada, grilled chicken). The latter two are bland and rubbery (I have ordered these more than once so it is more the norm than an isolated incident). The flour tortillas are dry and flavorless as well. The corn tortillas could definitely benefit with a little more time on the fryer so it doesn't taste like notebook paper. Their tres leches dessert is delicious and their Mexican drink selection is very good. There aren't many (read: no) authentic Mexican places in Troy so this place will have to suffice. La Botana defnitely has potential. The decor is nice, the service is friendly and, as I mentioned, drinks and desserts are great. If they can fix up their grilled meats while adding a few other authentic Mexican varieties such as lengua and buche (beef tongue and hog maw) and figure out how to grill the tortillas then it would be that much more popular.

Mexican Magic for my Mouth! This is a hidden Gem in Northern Troy and I am surprised that there is not a line out the door for their Steak Tampequena Combo. After running a half Marathon I really had a taste for some good Mexican food and that is exactly what I received. The combo had a generous portion of Steak was seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. It melted in my mouth. I followed the steak up with the hard shell taco which was prepared in traditional Mexican style and the signals to stop eating began since was getting full. I had to try a bite of the cheese Enchilada before putting the rest away for tomorrow - this was quite different than any cheese Enchilada that I have ever had. I honestly did not realize that it was a cheese Enchilada since it seemed so much more. Well, now the box is empty since I seriously could not stop myself from devouring this meal. My 210 lb body is full and I can't wait to treat myself again to this menu selection. Food was prepared fast and hot with plenty of flavor and original. Thanks for filling my belly La Botana! You Rock!

I wanted to love it - independent Mexican restaurant run by seemingly nice people. clean, on my way home from work. It was okay. I got carryout - Steak Tampiquena (marinated skirt steak, cheese enchilada, beef taco, rice and beans) and mini Botana. It ran about $20. The steak was very tasty. Everything else was just good - nothing special. Sorry.

I recently dined here about 2 weeks ago and have to say I'M A FAN! The hot salsa is amazing and to me, I'm extremely picky. . I have the tacos with steak and it was very good. I will say that they were slightly soggy from the fat of the meat, but still quite good. Service was helpful, friendly and quick. A very inexpensive meal as well. This was in line with what I would expect. I will definitely be back.

Whenever I come back to Troy, I always want to make a stop to La Botana. I found this place off Yelp in the first place and pressure my friends to go. The food is delicious, decently priced, and pretty authentic. Tastes just like a meal I would get in California, home of the best Mexican food. Their salsas and enchiladas are the best and I would recommend getting them!

Mexican food in a strip mall. In Troy. That really sums up the food. But I will go a bit deeper. La Botana opened a few weeks ago at John R and Square Lake, two miles from my house, a mile from my grandma's house. I went there with my mom after a day of shopping and visiting grandma, since she had found a coupon (which to her was apparently very important??) The service was very nice. You can tell the restaurant is fairly new, the staff isn't 100% on top of things (but not to the point where I get upset), there are a few kinks, etc. However, the food. The food was good. Not the best, but good for the price. The menu is a confusing piece of paper, but has your staples. I really enjoyed my basil and onion with chicken taco. I ended up putting some salsa on it for extra flavor and nom nom nom was a good way of putting things. La Botana could be better. But for where its located and what it is, I won't complain. I will most likely be going back in the near future when I want a few tacos.

I went to this small restaurant at the recommendation of a co-worker, and I was so pleasantly surprised! Absolutely charmed by the helpful counter staff who were more than accommodating and eagerness to please. I ordered a vegetarian burrito with shrimp added for a small fee. The portion was extremely generous and loaded with fresh veggies. The shrimp were nicely grilled - not tough at all. I managed to finish a quarter of it and boxed up the rest. True to gluttony, I polished off the entire meal a few hours later without any regrets! I can't wait to go back again and give my support to local businesses that truly care about timeless manners and quality food!

Many people (including me) bemoan the lack of Mexican eateries outside parts with a "south" and "west" as their geographical identifiers. Inevitably, the term "authentic" is injected, but I am starting to wonder if it is misused. After all, unless we've spent significant time in Mexico, are Mexican, or were raised by Mexicanos ourselves, what the hell do we really know? Does "authentic" only mean that the menu's spectrum is broad and/or deep? Is it required to delve into the obscure in order to be valid? Or can it be purely based on the quality of the offerings, in taste and in preparation? To describe this food in terms I can truthfully identify with: it's homemade. The menu is succinct. It inhabits no more than a page, plus a couple of items on the board behind the register that I didn't see on said page. The guacamole is creamy. The salsa (offered in several spice levels) is fresh. They both taste simply and expertly prepared, as if its maker learned how to prepare it from his grandmother. If you don't know that these are the gauges of "good" Mexican, then admit that you don't know much, and enjoy the ride. You will not find mole, cabeza or lengua here. But you will find chorizo and asada, which is impressive for a tiny strip-mall operation. A more complex quantifier is that husband and wife owners MAKE THEIR OWN TORTILLA. True, it won't blow you away, but if they know enough to make their own, it could be a sign of things to come. In the cooler are assorted Jarritos, flans and their interpretation of tres leches, which I can only describe as deliciously fluffy, despite being a dessert made of dense, milk-soaked cake. Currently, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Torta (served on traditional bread, I requested milanese-style chicken and it was perfect), Botana and Tostadas. I plan on exploring their menu in hopes that they will stick around and get inspired to do some exploring, too. La Botana reminds me that an eatery can be much more than just "good." It can also be promising. Besides, way up in these parts, we have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

They have the absolutely best burritos I've ever had. I've tried them all over Mexicantown in Detroit, from Los Galanes to Mexican Village and Armandos and none compare! The wet burrito, with chicken or steak is awesome! Great flavor with high quality ingredients. The rest of their menu is awesome too, from enchiladas to stuffed poblano peppers are reallly good! Who needs Mexicantown when the food here is sooo good!

Some friends and I went there last week because it was the first place we saw on our way back to work. The place was very clean and nice. The menu is a little small, but has all the basic Mexican food items. The enchiladas were very good and the portions were decent. I also got a side of tamales to give them a try. The corn bread that they were wrapped in was like cake. It was light, fluffy and delicious. You do not get unlimited chips and salsa, but you get enough. The guacamole was great, a little heavy on the onion side but the cilantro was nice touch. I will be eating here again.

I have to echo the reviews that tout the nice, friendly staff. I also have to echo the reviews that state that the food at La Botana is pretty good, but not the greatest. It's certainly a serviceable alternative to getting on my horse and riding down to Mexicantown to get some tacos or whatever. I quite enjoyed my steak Tampiquena. Definitely tasty. I'm a sucker for beef with lime in the marinade, and that's what I got. With the steak came rice; refried beans; a ground-beef, hardshell taco; a cheese enchilada; shredded lettuce; sour cream; and guacamole. I enjoyed it. I'll be back, because it's decent and fairly close to where I live. I just wasn't blown away. I'm probably at 2.5 stars.

I've been here a few times and always leave smiling- the food and service are excellent! The tostadas with chicken are my favorite- perfectly assembled, the chicken is juicy and flavorful and the frijoles are just like my abuelita makes. My boyfriend usually gets the enchiladas verdes or pork tamales and is always raving about how good they are. I always recommend La Botana to my friends and coworkers when they tell me they crave REAL Mexican food- especially since there are slim pickings in this area. Overall, great service, very clean and friendly atmosphere, and the food is delicious!

My wife and I are regular customers to this great little Mexican restaurant located off John R in a small unassuming strip mall. The staff is very pleasant and welcoming always greeting us when we enter. The main dishes we usually order are tacos, enchiladas or tamales and they have always been nice size portions but more importantly very flavorful and some of the better standard Mexican fair you can find. Chips are always warm and crisp and the salsa is fresh with just the right amount of heat. This restaurant isn't flashy, it just gets it right, with authentic Mexican dishes at very pocket friendly prices especially if you catch their flyer coupons. They have my recommendation.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
