Upon arrival at JA we were greeted by a friendly hostess who was on top of her game. we were seated promptly in a beautiful corner booth with a nice view of the two level dining room and open kitchen. The atmosphere was chill with dim lighting, the awesome smells of the wood chips and the bar area inviting ,if not tempting, to spend a long nite bellied up. tons of comfy booths which is a huge plus for me and I can see having friends and a few too many bottles of wine here. our waitstaff was attentive and all 4 servers who we saw knew when to stick and move. The martinis were good and though they were $10, the sidecar softened the blow. The calamari was presented nicely and prepared perfectly. My lady and I both got the house salad. Mine with an OK blue cheese dressing and was redeemed in most ways by crisp, fresh spring mix and flavorful produce all the way around. The croutons were house made and always a nice touch. I ordered a marinated ribeye which came half mid rare (as ordered) but half mid-well. Ribeyes are hard to ruin and this case no different so I let it slide and enjoyed the flavorful marinade and the notable smokey flavor from a wood chip enriched char grill. The generous portion of whipped garlic mash was outstanding but both dishes came in the middle of a gargantuan platter and with the 1980's chopped parsley for garnish. THe look , and overall feeling, of the dish would've been much improved with more mindful plating. The little miss got a chicken salad sandwich which was a little mayo-ee for my taste but the fresh dill came thru and the foccacia style bread it was served on was a really good fit. The orzo salad was a knock out! My company said the carrot cake is to die for. i had no room to attempt dessert but with the friendly, great service, over all quality and pretty well prepped food, Ill be back to try it next time. I'd give it a 3.5 and recommend it to you.

    J. Alexander's does "American" food really well. Their burgers are always juicy and their fries are thin but still very filling. My personal favorite is the prime rib. The rub that they use is just to my liking and it's fairly priced at around $15 (you can also choose a larger cut). The decor and overall mood of the restaurant is on the darker side. It's good for a date. They do have some tv's by the bar if you want to catch a game. Though, I wouldn't categorize it as a sports bar of any sort. Service really depends on who is working. I've had waiters that were pleasant and some that were not. This is pretty typical of chain restaurants, though. I don't think you'll be blown away by their food but you will leave satisfied.

What are these other one-, two-, and three-star reviewers smoking? This franchise is no better or no worse than the others: awesome J. Alexander's goodness. Minus one star because, although the croissants are still complimentary, they are no longer drizzled with honey AND you have to ask your waiter to bring them out (i.e., they are not brought to the table by default).

Review is from 02/2012 Nice server; Maui steak good, mashed potatoes were cold. Their filet mignon just didn't compare to another place that we like. free bday carrot cake was good! Salad was ok, i liked the cilantro dressing; I would give it a 3.5... called 20 min b4 so when we got there only waited the 10-15 min which wasn't too bad as they r very busy.

Great prime rib. Great chicken pasta soup. And great club sandwich. The wife loves the grilled chicken salad. Chris is always our waiter dose a A+ job. Not to pleased with the redesign of the place. Preferred the was it was better. Corporations sometimes do stupid things.

Great Restaurant, very busy at times so be sure to make a reservation! Best item on the menu is called the Prime Rib Sandwich. There carrot cake is also very good as well. Service varies depending on your server. If you are a healthy eater my girlfriend said the ahi tuna salad was also one of the best shes ever had

Robbie, my waiter, was very friendly and helpful The veggie burger is made fresh with veggies and is spicy

I wish they sung happy birthday to my friend but can't have it all right but the food was delicious the staff was great, they really aren't equipped for parties no bigger than 5 but they great & not to pricey either. I'd go back

Very delicious calamari app. The marinara sauce was very flavorful and the calamari wasn't chewy at all. I had the ribeye steak with the soy glaze...the sauce was too sweet and detracted from the quality of the meat, but the steak was cooked perfectly. The desserts are over the top and all were good, but the warm carrot cake is the star of the show here.

    J. Alexander's is by far one of my favorite restaurants. I always have a good dining experience here, but more importantly, always have excellent food! Delicious.

Super clean!!! Food was yummy but nothing to go crazy over. Perfect to satisfy the appetite. Staff is so nice and friendly. The burger Pierre was good. Cooked well. Flavors were all there. Gave it 4 stars because we were not too crazy about the steak brazo gravy sauce on top. It was too strong. Otherwise, this restaurant is a must try!

All about the Steak. I got reaaaaallly hungry and wanted a TV so I could watch the M v MSU game so I ducked in to the dark abode of J. Alexander's. I sat at the sprawling bar that they have in the front of the well appointed restaurant, where they have a couple of large Flat Screens and promptly ordered a craft beer. They have a handful to choose from like Atwater's Dirty Blonde and a few local and national selections. I was happy. So the menu is like steak this and steak that and steaky steak steak. So I went with the Steak Brazzo, which is basically steak and mushrooms in a mushroom sauce and some lovely garlic mash. The fillet chunks were done just right and the mushroom sauce was as good as any I have had. I would recommend this dish to anyone on the fence of what to go with. Staff was busy, busy, busy but always right there for you. I never had to flag anyone down and this place was jammed to the rafters with people when I visited. I'm coming back, and i'm bringing friends.

I always enjoy the food here. Everything is fresh and tasty. I had the shrimp taco platter with band bang sauce and it was wonderful. Portions are pretty huge, especially for lunchtime when we went. The staff were friendly and attentive.

We have not been here since before the remodel. We went tonight for our date night. Food was outstanding (we did not care for the calamari - little overpriced at $16). But the service was some of the best! Better than some of the high end steak places. Drinks were always filled, plates were removed promptly. Everyone was helping each other out! Will be back again and again!

Amazing food, excellent service. We got there shortly after opening and it was dead. Within the time we ate lunch, it was packed. We had the deviled egg appetizer. It had candied bacon on top and it was absolutely delicious. I just had a salad for lunch. It was pretty good, though I do wish they weren't so stingy with the croutons because they were so tasty. My mom had one of the sandwiches, it was ham and cheese with a beautiful fried egg on top. Not only was it a beautiful work of art, it was super good. Pretty decent portion size and it came with a small salad and fries. I had the carrot cake for dessert because I'm a total freak, but it had to be one of the best carrot cakes I have ever had in my life. They serve it warm and the butter cream frosting gets melts and wonderful. I'm salivating writing this review as I think about it. I sampled my mom's key lime pie which was equally tasty. My mom says "you know it's real key lime when it's not green!". It was indeed real and had a thick graham cracker crust. I can't wait to go back and reignite my love affair with J. Alexander's carrot cake!

Went here for lunch and ordered fish tacos. Food was bland and would not recommend. Service was A+ -rating based solely on food. I probably would have to try this place again due to fantastic service and order something on the meat side as every place seems to have an off kitchen day.

  • Aaron T.

The food was great and the portion sizes were very satisfying. We went with the Ahi tuna salad and the Pierre Burger, both were very good. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and very professional while still being personable. He was absolutely awesome! If you have the chance try to be waited on by Chris.

  • Mike H.

Service was average. Taste of steak was fantastic but both steaks we ordered were cooked very inconsistent with parts being near raw.

  • Shannon S.

I've never had a bad experience at J Alexanders and today was no different. I love that it's a little dark in here, with just enough light to make you look gaw-juss! Our server (Shoshana...love that name!) was very attentive. I love the ice ice cold water they bring to you in the ice cold glass. Quite refreshing. Mojitos were strong and minty perfect. Shoe string fries, are like the only ones you can eat with your fork, and you totally want to once they are served to you. We had the warm beets with cheese and walnuts...SO GOOD! J Als, is just a cozy place to stop in for some good cheer. So stop in!

  • Amanda A.

I know, it's a chain, but it's always one I am very glad to see. I am not adventurous with what I order here. I stick to the filet mignon and of course the real reason for coming, the carrot cake. You do not have a soul if you don't like the carrot cake here. So this review might as well just be to tell you to order the carrot cake.

Every once in a while we visit J. Alexander's for a nice dining in experience for either lunch or dinner. Today was no different in quality of service and food, however this was our first visit since their dramatic renovation from back in January, 2015. It's much more spacious with toned down lighting. Side note: bring a sweater or something to cover up even if it's summer..tends to be a little chilly. I'm always warm so it didn't bother me but my wife is always cold. All of the food is over priced..it is Troy..but nonetheless the appetizers, main course and any others items are always presented so well and taste so good. My wife got the Mahi Mahi tuna salad which delivered to its high expectation. I got a nicely seasoned steak (done medium) with mashed potatoes and was not short of amazing. I always feel like we're paying the extra buck for presentation and the quality of service and it still seems worth it to us especially since the food is done so well. This is a great place for a nice family Dinner or even a professional meeting.

I was ready to give J Alexander a 3-star review - the soup was OK ("Polish Gumbo") the fish tacos were 80% cabbage (although they did accommodate my request for grilled fish instead of fried)...and then I ordered chocolate cake. The cake was fine - a HUGE piece, actually - and the ice cream/hot fudge were actively good. When the server asked me how I was enjoying the cake, I said, "It's pretty good, but there's just a lot of it. I almost wish there were some nuts or something to break it up." I shouldn't have been surprised when I dish of pecans showed up at the table a moment later...but then she came back a minute or two after THAT with a small dish of peanuts too. "I thought maybe you'd like peanuts too...or better..." Great service rounded out a decent (but not spectacular) meal.

I'm really disgusted by the updated design here. This used to be the date night spot for my wife and I. It used to be trendy. The new design is like a hospital cafeteria or grandma's country buffet. Why go so bland??

After a bit of shopping, my nieces got hungry at the mall. So ok, auntie feed us! Took them to j Alexander's because the five year old didn't feel like walking to the other side of the mall to go to pf changs. I haven't eaten here in a while, and I'm very impressed. Our waiter Phil, was very sweet and my nieces loved him. Restaurant was very clean but the noise level was loud loud loud. Even my nieces were holding their hands up to their ears. Anyways, I ordered Mac n cheese for the girls, they loved it. Macaroni shells baked with white cheese and basil I think...it was very delicious. I had the grilled chicken salad as to attempt to stay away from carbs. I've never had a chicken salad where it was slices of chicken instead of chicken pieces that had to be cut up. I very much enjoyed this, was much easier to eat and very tasty. I should've ordered extra feta, I love feta cheese. So the attempt to stay away from sugar and carbs failed when we got offered dessert and carrot cake was on the menu. The girls said "carrot cake for dessert? Who wants vegetables as dessert?" No no no, carrot in the cake with cream cheese frosting, and raisins. I made them try it and I only got a bite out of it. I may go back just to have that carrot cake.

I have mixed feelings about this review because I actually love J Alexander's. I just recently dined here a few nights ago and was surprised upon walking in to see that it had been completely renovated. To be honest, I hate the renovation. J's used to have a great atmosphere, was more intimate and had a nice class about it. The new look is brighter and more open, presumably to maximize seating capacity, but it's just not the same...almost looks cheap. It's just not the same dining experience anymore. It looks like a jazzed up Applebee's. The ambiance is gone. My boyfriend who accompanied me also dislikes the new look, as does a few friends who've also been here recently. Fortunately, the food is still the same...delicious! I've never had a bad meal here, which is why I struggle giving only 3 stars. If based on food alone it would be a solid 4.5 stars. But I just can't get past the atmosphere now. Also, while its great that there's more seating, the service was lacking in comparison to my previous dining experiences. Perhaps our server was just having a bad night, but the level of service was definitely less than "normal" for this place. Ugly or not, we'll be back, but just for the food. Probably not for nice evenings out or special events anymore though, simply because it just doesn't feel that nice anymore. Hopefully service improves and goes back to pre-renovation standards.

The food was good but for the price, I'd rater eat at other places in the mall. I like the chicken there, but have not tried anything else. The service was friendly and attentive. Would recommend giving this place a try.

This is my #1 favorite place in Michigan, best place to enjoy your dinner and have the true ambiance of exclusivity. If you and the Mrs. are out for a date night, this place is dark and quiet, no need to yell over each other to be understood. There's not ONE thing I could complain about with the food, it's amazing and the service is outstanding. Something simple as chicken fingers and mac & cheese, will leave your mouth wanting more and more and more...

Came here for lunch today and ordered the guacamole, grilled artichokes, and some salads. The bill was over $75. The artichokes were tasty, however VERY small. Worth $16...probably not! Guacamole was excellent and the chips were hot and salty. Salads were exceptional. Very large portions and plentiful on the ingredients. I would come back ;)

I'm a big fan of J. Alexander. I've been coming to this restaurant for years. I usually get the grilled salmon with steamed broccoli. I also love the honey mustard. It has a flavor I just can't resist. In addition, they have done some some renovations and it gives it a little more pizazz! Highly recommend if you're at Somerset mall.

Consistently great food and service! Just went on a Saturday at 1:30 for lunch. The bar and restaurant were full. So happy for this restaurants success!! Go and have a great time!

One of the good fine dining experiences that I have enjoyed in a while. Not much disturbance and yet good service. The food was nice. Had the Alaskan cod and shrimp. The Flavor is still in my memory from the shrimp. Will visit again when I visit the Detroit area. The cod was a little salty to my taste buds but my friends seemed to like it this way! So that's not something I am going to complain about.

Stopped in for Saturday lunch and martinis. Martinis were pretty good. The steak tacos were bland with gross old lettuce. The Hyde park chicken sandwich was pretty good, although bun was too greasy. The yummy fries with salt & pepper were the best part of the meal. Unlikely I'd come back for food, but perhaps for cocktails.

  • Haroun K.

Solid, yuppified mall food. The veggie burger is on the north side of decent, even though there are undertones of processed-ness. It is the sauce, and the mayonnaise and cheese which make it. The fries are weak. Don't do the fries. Get the spaghetti squash with marinara. The chopped mediterranean-style salad was ok. A little too sweet, and kind of indistinct. The bar is roomy and they do a strong pour, but the beer list is awful (stella, newcastle, guiness, you get it). Thank god for Sierra Nevada, I guess. The best thing you can do, however, is get that chocolate cake. You have no idea. It is one of the best chocolate cakes I've had at any restaurant, mall or otherwise. It comes with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, and is just too tasty to convey with words. Service was very funny, because we never really saw the same person twice. Whatever. It's the mall. Eat the cake and gtfo asap.

I hadn't been to a J. Alexander's in YEARS. I had the Fleur De Lis and the Bullet Presbyterian which were delicious. I also had the Shrimp Tacos (that Bang Bang sauce is REALLY good.) and The Chocolate Bundt cake. All the food and the service was excellent. The only thing is I wish it was a stand alone restaurant so I wouldn't be tempted to go shopping at the mall!

Very good. Nice wine selection. Good service, knowledgeable staff. It was easy to have a relaxed lunch, we weren't rushed at all.

I love J Alexanders! Great steaks, great food, entrée priced (rather than al-la cart, which is about double), and the service and atmosphere is awesome. The Alex's chopped salad is my favorite salad of any restaurant, anywhere, and I've never had a bad meal here, and always had a great time. Good drinks too!

  • Poorna R.

This is a great place for yuppies. Loses one star because you can't make a reservation...which happens to be slightly annoying on busy nights, but it's okay. If you've read my previous reviews, I'm sure you've figured out by now that I'm a serious mac 'n cheese fanatic. By FAR, my favorite mac 'n cheese is at this place. They use a combination of different cheeses and it literally melts in your mouth (and hardens your arteries I'm sure...) For my entree, I tried the strip steak, which was flavored well and cooked to my liking. and DESSERT! Dessert is a must...split the carrot cake with your dining compadre...you will not be disappointed!

  • Carolynn F.

I find J. Alexander's to be a bit over priced but that being said I eat there often enough because overall it is delicious. I am a huge fan of their spinach queso dip and yesterday when I went they had guacamole as a special which I knew would compliment the queso well, it did. Although the guac was fourteen dollars I ordered it. It was a small portion but it was extremely fresh and delicious. The filet was not up to my personal preference. It was tender but it was overly smokey flavored. Generally I tend to prefer their sandwiches to their entrees. The Hyde Park is a great chicken sandwich and they by far have the best veggie burger around. Their vegetables are always cooked perfectly. So yes a bit over priced but at least you're guaranteed to have a good meal.

What a beautiful renovation! Rustic California meets modern elegance. Went here with some out of town friends for lunch and while it is a chain, the food and service were impeccable (high end dining impeccable). Phil, our server, was very knowledgable about the menu and made some great add on suggestions to our veggie burger and ahi tuna salad, both of which were very tasty. The GM even visited our table and was very personable and welcoming. Will definitely be back for lunch, dinner, and cocktails!

The food was nice, my hubby and I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare, with a side of the fire grilled artichokes. Good flavor and the waiter was attentive and professional. However, the ambiance was not that nice. It felt bland. Very metallic. Food and ambiance should excite the senses! However, this was simply pleasant. It was okay.

this review is of an atypical experience at J Alexanders but I'm compelled to write it anyway. My wife and I went for our anniversary. We called ahead and were told they would put our name in and it would be about 15 to 20 mins. It actually took well over a half hour to get seated. Our waitress asked about drinks and we wanted some time to look over the menus and went with water to start. we didn't see her again for about 15 mins. When she did return I ordered the Steak Brazzo and My wife ordered an Entree salad with Dressing on the side. I also ordered a Manhattan. After a while someone arrived at the table with a glass of bourbon. I informed them it was to be a Manhattan and they took it away and returned with an apology. At that time we asked fro some bread. When the meals arrived my wife's salad was drenched in dressing, obviously not on the side as ordered. My Entree was 100% NOT the marinated pieces of filet mignon the menu stated it would be. It tasted like tough salty chunks of strip steak. I asked for the manager and She came immediately and apologized. in the mean time though the Waitress offered to have something else made up. I opted for the Filet prepared medium plus. By the way...still no bread at that point. When the steak came it was well chared on the outside and bloody in the middle. I understand that this can happen, especially if you try to cook it too fast. My issue is with the waitress. When i asked her to assess the preparation she said " it looks medium plus to me, but i can have them cook it more" I know it would have come back burned at that point as it was already very unevenly cooked. I told her i would just eat what part of it I could and that I was really not happy. The manager again come over and apologized and agreed with me that indeed the steak was very under cooked. She also offered to buy both of us desert and wished us a happy anniversary.

Our recent experience at J. Alexander's can be summed up in one word: fantastic. We began our meal with fire grilled artichokes as an appetizer. Maybe a tad salty, but overall quite tasty. My wife ordered ahi tuna steak and I my usual filet mignon. Along with a side of Mac and cheese for my son. All items were exquisitely prepared. I cleaned my plate (luckily I was able to hide the tongue tracks I left on the plate). My wife did the same although with the dressing on her salad it was more difficult to hide the fact that she had licked her plate clean. We're not sure what happened to the dish that contained my son's meal, but we're relatively certain he enjoyed it. All this topped off with the fact that our server Kris (I'm assuming the spelling, on the bill he was listed as Kristofe), was nothing short of spectacular. From identifying the martini my wife wanted (and had last time) simply by garnish, to recommending a place to take my wife for cocktails for her birthday, he went beyond his duty to deliver an excellent experience for us. Overall, we'll recommend this place and Kris to everyone we see.

The food here is good but I feel like they're always out of things! Very limited on what they serve. They were out of salmon dip, crab cakes, and artichokes. You're going to serve it the next day so why not just prepare more for the day? This is a restaurant and guest shouldn't be told you're out of so much food. It makes me not want to go in as much. Service 8/10.

Absolutely love their food! Every time I come here I have amazing service and the food tastes great. My favorite appetizer is the spinach dip. Amazing. I usually eat here when going out casually. The burgers are not to die for - coming from a burger fanatic. I do enjoy the tenders. Their salads are huge and they always taste fantastic. I always make sure to order fries. They have thin fries made to perfection! On the down side, waiting for a table takes extremely long. Sometimes you wait longer then they tell you also.

Walked in here with friends for dinner. Stood at the side of hostess stand because someone was at the front. We were not acknowledged . After the third person walked up and one of the three hostesses asked for their name, I said excuse me, I think we were next. She said "are you next?" I said yes, you helped three people while I stood here. She said to me "Well the line stars here!" as she pointed to the front of the hostess stand. I said never mind...we walked over to The Capital Grille and had a fantastic dinner with awesome service. They gave us a free sample martini and dessert because we told them how rude they were at J. Alexander's.

This place was our big splurge on our trip to Troy. Very nice environment with exceptional staff attention. I had the filet cooked perfectly with the grilled beets.which were really overcooked and dry. My pal had the fish tacos...she was a bit disappointed with the sauce, but hey, she's from California so her bar was probably a bit high for a fish taco in Michigan during a snowstorm. :) wine pairing was perfect and waiter even followed me into the mall to give me the name and vintage that I'd asked for but forgot to get from him. A nice evening.

I don't just hand out 5 stars to a restaurant, especially to chain restaurants, but this is a complete exception and here's why: This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants - particularly because of the outstanding service and those semicircle booths are just too romantic to pass up if you want to sit close to someone special. You could pick something off the menu blindfolded and still love every bite. I promise! Full-fledged American food just the way you'd want it. This place makes everything from scratch and I love that. Their seasonal guacamole is better than any mexican restaurant's nearby, along with their queso. Don't pass it up! The salsa is simple and refreshing and always so fresh. Love the chicken tenders, their my guilty pleasure, and if your having a bad day they'll cheer you right up. The fries are thinly cut just how I like them, and instead of coleslaw I like the Mac n cheese! They let you substitute any side for one you'd prefer-the broccoli, mashed potatoes...anything is good if you don't care for fries. Every other entree I've gotten has been phenomenal as well-fish sandwich is pretty epic and the burger with tilamook cheddar is great! Everything is large portions-high quality meat and produce. #1REASON I COME BACK: I love how accommodating all the servers are. They definitely give you the kindest, quickest, most personable service possible. If you don't like something, if your food isn't cooked properly or doesn't taste right (which it rarely goes wrong here to begin with) they take care of it immediately no questions asked. They seem to thrive off a table with high expectations. At the turn of your head you'll look back and have a brand new drink refill, blink twice and you'll have a clean table with no crumbs or dirty plates. They really want you to have a clean, efficient, and wonderful meal that exceeds most people's standards. The servers are so attentive, like hawks gazing over the dining room, and they cater to your table as a team, so you will have multiple people assisting you throughout the meal, however they manage to do it in a way that isn't overbearing or annoying-just swift, helpful, and friendly. No other restaurant does this so superbly in the surrounding area, or should I say, NO OTHER restuarant in Michigan provides you with such excellent service. Very consistent, and very accommodating. The food's great every time, and I time and time again choose this restaurant for lunch or dinner because of how amazing it is.

This place is always busy and does not take reservations. They also do not do carry out. Automatically brings them down to three stars. However as far as the food goes, it's pretty good. Love the wood grilled artichokes and the guacamole when they have it. I love the Hyde Park chicken sandwich with the shoe string fries. The burgers are also very good. The filet is not bad also, however I would never come here for that, Morton's all the way. The rattlesnake pasta soup and grilled shrimp dinner are among my favorites. You have to try the carrot cake it is fresh and warm.

I called to place a carry out order and the receptionist said they don't take carry out orders over the phone, only in person. We were very dissapointed. So they expect me to come in, order it in person and wait 15-20 minutes until it's ready. No common sense at all. What a way to turn business away and allow other neighboring restaurants to benefit from your non sense!

Great place. Wife and I had to run some errands and stopped in. We were able to talk because music was at the right level. Waiter was great. Would go back. The food was not fake but quality. Nothing processed. Will come back.

This has recently turned into one of my favorite restaurants in Troy. the burgers are simply amazing. I have dined at J's 4 times in the past month, maybe 10 times since November, and I have always left the restaurant satisfied. I feel that the servers are extremely professional, fun, and friendly, and i have enjoyed every visit. I always look forward to Fridays when I get out of work because that's usually the night I stop on in for dinner. My personal favorite choice on the menu is the Pierre Burger, substituting the side of fries with the Orzo and Wild Rice. You might think it's strange to have rice with a burger, but it's absolutely delicious. it's not cheap, nor too expensive, but the taste of the food and experience is priceless.

Terrible terrible experience. My friend was in town and this is her favorite restaurant so we went to J. Alexander's in Troy. We knew there would be a hefty wait because it was a weekend which was expected. However, the front desk girls were incredibly rude. In a place like this I expect to have a smile Greeting all customers. Not a look of "get away from me". The one with what looked like she had a cinnamon bun on her head, decided to ignore us and purposely not look at us for several minutes when we came back per her instruction to get a buzzer. So now we are seated and the terrible service doesn't stop there. The person who got our drinks and appetizer was great. However we sat there with a finished appetizer, empty drinks and no one had come to take out order. We moved sections and asked to speak to a manager who cut my friend off when she was trying to explain that we had waited 2 hours for just to get seated and now no one was taking our order or refilling our drinks. The waiter she assigned us pretended to be nice but really he was sarcastic and rude. He even made a bad comment about the guests sitting behind us about how difficult they were being. He took a million years to get us our change from the bill that I had to go find him. at this point we had been there for 4 hours between waiting, being served, eating, and trying to pay. The food: I basically paid $20 for chicken fingers which was described as southern fried chicken on the menu. I didn't feel like saying anything and being there longer than we were but all this in consideration was an awful experience. I won't be back. There was no compensation for any of our trouble. They really need to step up the hospitality if your going to have a 2 hour wait and have people pay $20 for chicken fingers.

very standard jalex food. Issue is this one is pitch dark and needs a renovation when it comes to floor layout. The service is goodm but they check on you too much.

As i said in my review of the other J alex, this is the only chain restaurant I will eat at. The food is always on point. Never a mistake, always yummy. I LOVE the orzo wild rice, the grilled artichoke, the salmon, the shrimp louis salad, the alex salad plus chicken, minus croutons, the hyde park sandwich etc.... lol I don't know why the food is so good, or why I can overlook the chain factor- it's just that kind of place. The staff are great, always remembering us and our drink preferences. I come here a lot, it's just a go to place when I don't feel like deciding. It helps that it's inside the mall, and I'm usually at the mall.

So the reason this restaurant gets two stars is due to the retarded policy they have regarding seating (the food was mediocre...only would have got 3.5 stars just based on that). So we have a party of five, but only 3 people were on time. A table was ready for us, but we decided to have a drink at the bar. The hostess did not tell us that our table would be given away if we did that and that there was only one table available....Smart girl. So we have to wait 15 minutes, which wasnt a big deal, but when the hostess lead us to the table there were 8 tables of 4 unoccupied along with about 10 booths. I thought are you f-ing joking me right now. You make us wait for a table to open up when you could have put two together. It was 730 pm on a Monday night for F@%# sake. The restaurant is not going to fill up. The utter stupidity of situation really put a bitter taste in my mouth

Superb reviews, but reality doesn't live up to the expectations. Came in here for lunch on Thursday afternoon. Server was Daniel, who spent most of his time chatting with a table across from us about mostly nonsense. We asked for a few moments to look over the menu, received well over 15 minutes. Finally makes his way around to take our order, no apology. He spent 10 of those minutes talking to other tables. It wasn't about food, no, it was about his brother. I'm sitting right next to you while you talk about this guy. Can you please just take my order? Food arrived fast. The food is extremely forgettable. Sear on their New York Strip steak (asked for medium) was borderline charred. Had a very burnt taste. Not seasoned well enough. It actually might have been seasoned properly, but the burnt charredness of the sear was overpowering. Steak came with Mac and Cheese, it was okay. I prefer Kraft. Initially it tasted pretty good, but had almost a... vinegary? aftertaste. I honestly can't pin what the aftertaste was, but I wasn't a fan. No salad, had to order it separately. They got the salad right. Just a basic garden salad. Even McDonalds can get a salad right. Steak - $29 Salad - $5 ---------- Total - $36.04 Value for your money? Not good. I don't like Outback, but you can get a better steak there for cheaper. Granite City down the street has an awesome steak for about $27 and comes with a salad. Daniel spent most of his time tending other tables, and chatting with his beloved table that he spent 75% of his time at. Those people definitely got the works, while we got the shaft. They must be the ones writing 5 star reviews. The only positive things I have to say is that the atmosphere is pretty cool. It's relaxed with kind of a upscale contemporary tone. A nice place for a quiet lunch or dinner. Dining areas are pretty private and tables for two have plenty of room. Might come off as a little try-hard for some people, but it fits where it's at (Somerset). Other than that, this place is pretty forgettable. Won't be returning.

Calamari were good not great. Pierre burger held great promise but way too much grilled onion which made the whole burger a soggy mess. Still tasty though. Filet medallions which were the special were avg, Madeira sauce was too vinegary. Mac and cheese and showstring fries were both good.

My boyfriend and I don't generally frequent Malls or chain restaurants. However, J Alexander's is one of the exceptions. I usually get the prime rib. It's always very good. It has a great flavor and always comes out cooked as ordered. I'm absolutely in love with the Blackberry Volcano Martini. It actually bubbles and smokes like a volcano. It's a very clever presentation for a delicious drink. My boyfriend get the veggie burger, which he says is one of the best he's ever had and I believe him since he usually finishes it before I even get halfway done with mine. Service at J Alexander's is always amazing. An empty plate never stays in front of you for more then a few moments and you never have to wait for a server to greet you. The servers and bartenders work as a team. On one evening somewhere around 10 different servers helped us in one way or another. Whether it was clearing a dish, grabbing a refill, or answering a question. As a former server I'm always impressed with how this place is ran. On another note I once sat at a table where I could see into the kitchen. From what I could see It is spotless and looks like the restaurant just opened yesterday. I was disappointed that they only have three dessert options. I've only tried the Chocolate cake and I was not impressed. honestly box chocolate cake is better. With the exception of dessert I really recommend this place if your in the area.

Terrible food, pretty expensive.. Drinks were very expensive at 12$ per for a very mediocre restaurant chain ? Rather have paid the extra few bucks and ate across the hall at somerset ... Sticky silverware too..Yuck...

I know this sounds like. 5 year old talking, but, the best chicken fingers I've ever had in my life. I actually didn't even know I was ordering chicken fingers, I thought it was just a fried chicken breast. And now I don't remember what the dish was actually called. You can figure it out, I believe in you! (note: I don't actually believe in you*) *Santa Claus excluded

This is a nice place with a mature, grown and classy clientele. Yes - it's inside a mall (Somerset Collection) - but it's also an upscale mall with unaffordable stores in one of the most affluent suburban areas in the country. Though I've never actually ate here - I have, from time-to-time "stumbled" in for a Bloody Mary (which they make WELL) while my girlfriend shops. Me: Honey, you're going to need about another 30-40 minutes to pick between these 4 perfumes right? G/F: Yeah babe, is that OK? Do you want to go check out the Sony store, or Apple or Bose or something? Me: Um, maybe. *bashful, twinkle in my eyes* G/F: You want a Bloody Mary from that Sports Bar downstairs don't you? Me: Yes, whatever beats the headache of all these perfumes in the air and it is not a "Sports Bar," it's a refined & grown American bar/grille that happens to occassionally showcase sporting events on-screen. G/F: Well if it's refined & grown, good luck with them letting you in - go and have fun! Happily, I exit I to swing by J. Alexander's for an all refreshing and well made tall, Bloody Mary cocktail, Complete with Ketel One vodka, a spear of 3 fat stuffed olives, and a bottle of Tabasco to bring it to my level. Mmm. $9? Ok, fair enough. Beats the $65 I had to spend on the perfume 45 minutes later. My main gripe is that it's usually too busy to sit at the bar and the rest of the seating can feel a bit disconnected from the quick drink/conversation ambiance. Also, since there are a ton of places that can offer what this place has without the hassle of parking at the mall - I really don't see myself going here unless I'm already at Somerset to begin with. Great place for a drink to kill time while in the mall. If you're hungry - the food looks great. And so do the people (minus me of course) ;-)

    J. Alexander's previously held a top-3 spot in our list of favorite places to frequent. Salmon was the initial draw for me but the Ahi tuna, which comes with "smashed" potatoes and a veggie (which I replace with their out-of-this-world orzo and wild rice) quickly became my usual. Deb would more oft than not go with the steak brazzo (marinated pieces of filet in a mushroom medeira), but was won over by the Ahi tuna as well. As I said, this place was top notch for us for a long time and then seemed to hit a rough patch. The orzo wasn't quite the same ... maybe slightly different prep, or a different orzo altogether? The smashed potatoes arrived cool a couple of times and the cuts of fish or steak just didn't knock our socks off like they so consistently had before. So, rather than break up with J. we simply explained that it wasn't us, it was him ... and took some time off. ------------------------------- Three months later ------------------------------------- Absence makes the heart grow fonder apparently. We stopped in for lunch and did something we hadn't ever done before. We ordered from the lunch menu ... as in "burgers and sandwiches" lunch menu. What a great move ... my bacon/swiss burger may have been the best I've ever had. The flavor was so generous, condiments would have been sacrilege. Large enough to have to cut in half (and I'm not a cut-in-halfer by nature) and accompanied by thin shoestring fries that were void of grease ... amazing. Deb had the chicken salad sandwich and it was loaded not only with large cubes of chicken, but with flavor to spare. I have never ordered a chicken salad sandwich ... just not my thing ... but I tried this and it won me over, honestly. It's served open-face with the orzo/wild rice. Best lunch in a long time and we've had some good ones. We'll be back, of course ... service here is always outstanding. Plus, we have to order dinner entrees before J.A. is completely forgiven. He certainly got off to a great start with lunch.

Awesome. Now that the officially have grilled artichokes on the menu, I'm in heaven. It's amazing every time. The veggie burger has such great in your face flavor. The Spinach Queso is a must have. If you are lucky enough to be there when they have the Ahi Tuna Burger on special, GET IT! It's is soooo good. It's light and refreshing but still satisfying. No matter what server I get, they are always great. And who can turn down free valet!?

It's a chain but I like it. It's dark, a li'l hoity-toity and quality. If you go for the right reason, the $12 top-shelf drinks don't matter. Husbands: tell your wives to dress up, take them shopping at Somerset and then for dinner and drinks here. 5,000 brownie points.

We had lunch at the bar - no idea why there are SO many people on a workday! The food was good but WAY too salty - at least my tortila soup. I ended up not really eating it. I liked the skinny fries though.

Went there on Friday night on business dinner with 6 other colleagues. The decor was OK, but it's so cramped that I felt like I almost hit on something every time I walked. Service was bad for a fine dining restaurant. They gave a small table for 7 people. Calamari was not bad but too oily from over cooked it. I ordered the fillet mignon, medium well, it came tough and burnt on the sides. I saw the same situation with my colleagues who ordered the rib eye. When I told the waiter it's overcooked, he said, "OK." then went away. It's weird. Probably he thought it's over 6 ppl already and gratuity would be included, so who cares about apologizing. I asked everyone on their food, no positive feedback, they either said, "Eek it wasn't so good" or "I had better".

Went for a romantic evening on sweetest day 2013. My wife ordered the chicken tacos. They brought out the shrimp tacos. Finally brought out the right ones. Lots of lettuce, very little chicken. Waiter was indifferent. No good beers on tap.

Nice atmosphere. Up scale kind of restaurant. Although is a chain, it actually have really good food. I don't really have much to say, everything was great. There are plenty of reviews in here, so mine won't add much to it. I would definitely recommend it.

I went to this restaurant for a ladies night out with my friends. It was really just okay, I ended up having a Cezar Salad without cheese and I got a plate of lettuce with cheese and no croutons, so I sent it back and got a plate of lettuce without crutons. I didn't enjoy the dressing at all. My friends got some pretty nice dishes, but it was nothing really special compared to other restaurants I have visited. The waiter was also just meh.

Long wait so call ahead. New York strip was thick in cut but lacked any taste, relying on the garlic butter patty to make up for it. Mac and cheese was tasty. If you want a quality steak, go next door to the Capital Grill.

I would have done zero stars if possible. My husband stopped in to pick up some coleslaw for our dinner and some orzo salad two usual favorites. I am only commenting on the food, service can be spotty at this location. Another chain restaurant, but in this case a good one. I came to this restaurant about a month ago, and the food was really good. I had the cajun spiced prime rib which was about 16 bucks and my friend had the NY Strip which was a little more. We started with the Calimari (2nd best part of our meal) and the Crab Queso. The Strip came with a side of macaroni n chz that was abosolutely the best mac n chz I've ever had! I wish it was all I got, I would have been happy with just that. Our server was awesome her name was Monica, she let us know about all of the specials helped us through the wine menu and as a waitress myself, I have nothing negative to say about her which is not common. The one and only complaint I have about the food was that I couldnt believe how HUGE the portions were!LOL. I know this is normally not something you would want to complain about but i don't possibly see how anyone could sit down have two apps, and two entrees and eat it all. and for two or three dollars less they could cut the portions a little and maybe make it easier for regualr people to afford ordering more appetizers when the go there. People these days I think are starting to appreciate quality over quanity when it comes to food. Atleast i do!

I did not discover until about a year ago that this place was part of a chain, when I stumbled across another location out in West Bloomfield or somewhere around those parts. But you know what, I don't hold it against the place at all. The food - mostly "American" type fare, though upscale and polished - is always good. The drinks are smartly made and swiftly delivered. The service, in my experience, has always been impeccable. For me, it's a favorite for business lunches, I'll take clients or partners here and the place never fails me. Never tried it for a date, but I'd be willing to bet it'd work out alright, maybe especially as a cap-off to a day of shopping or something, which would be convenient since it's part of Somerset Mall. And sure - it's part of a mall. Sometimes, there's a wait to be seated. I'd go out on a limb and even say the place sometimes has a problem with being understaffed. But on the whole, it's a good solid restaurant with good food that isn't a hassle to patronize.

Nice bar and very clean. Great American food, it's a chain. French dip and prime rib sandwiches are awesome. It can get busy, they have pagers whilst you walk about the mall. Is it me, or is it always cold there?

Delicious, straightforward "American" food. It is a franchise, but I'm not going to lie, when I walk in, I know longer feel like I'm in a mall in a suburb of Detroit. The decor and ambience (especially when its busy at dinner) is very nice, and I do like how the kitchen is open and the bar is right at the entrance of the restaurant. Now, down to the food. I've been here many many times because my parents live less than 5 minutes away and I end up going there when I visit home. I've got to say that they are consistent. The calamari never disappoints. Its actually my favorite calamari to date- lightly fried and just the tad bit of spicy-ness...is it paprika in the batter, maybe? The shoestring fries are just more fun than regular fries too. I usually order the Ahi Tuna while my boyfriend has had the Prime Rib and the PR Sandwich countless times. The salads are also very well portioned and very good, and I've heard the burgers are good too. The only thing I've had here that was not so great was the NY Strip Steak, but it ain't a steakhouse, so that was my fault for ordering something kind of off the beaten path for this restaurant. Another thing- they don't really take reservations, but if you call them, say 15 minutes before you get there and tell them you're on the way, they'll put your name down so you'll have a spot by the time you get there. Service has been pretty consistent the times I've been here. Attentive enough, but not invasive. Bottom Line: When my boyfriend and I are visiting at home and want to grab a quick bite to eat, we come here. Food is good and its cheap enough that we can splurge a bit on extra sides and drinks.

I have previously visited the location in West Bloomfield and decided to pop into this location for a bite since I was in the area. This was around 11 on a Sunday afternoon. It was close to open and it seemed like the staff was still getting prepared for the day. Shorty & I both decided to have burgers. I enjoyed mine, the bun in particular. Our server was a bit green. she constantly reached over the table to grab plates, re-fill glasses, etc. I know this is a chain, and have visited two other locations and know this does not equate with my other experiences...

This place is on the "regular" side of Somerset mall. Some ppl swear by this place but it reminds me of a low budget Houstons, but classier than a Fridays. The ribs arent bad...service pretty good. The place is usually always buzzing, but I think the food is absolutely overated.

I should start out by saying I am not a fan of Somerset. That I have to go there to eat here = automatic star lossage (yes, I make up words). It is a chain restaurant, so eh. I went there to catch up with a friend and did not feel rushed at all, which was great. The food was pretty good and the service was nice. I have to say great fries and the fiance was a fan of the French Dip. I think most would give it 4 stars, but all and all it just isn't my bag. After all chain food in an expensive mall is still chain food in a mall. Here is the breakdown: * Wait staff: Attentive and polite * Drink Menu: Stocked bar and decent wine selection * Menu: American Bistro * Parking: You have about three lots and two structures to choose from. It is on the new (North) side of Big Beaver, facing the road. They have valet if you choose.

I got a good deal for a high priced restaurant. At lunch I got a veggie burger that was homeade and it was huge and tasty like no other veggie burger i had before. Really good grilled sesame seed bun and substituted the side of fries for a side of macaroni and cheese which was really amazing and it all came out to 11.50. Really good service and nice atmosphere really good wine selection. I will be defiantly going here again especially for the homeade mac and cheese! :)

Tonight was not a good night at J. Alexander's. Got there with high hopes of a good meal. Was seated pretty quickly but waited 10 minutes before approached for drinks or apps? My expectations are to be approached with in minutes. Oh well, then our waiter came by and was a walking zombie, no emotion, no enthusiasm and clearly a poor communicator. Did not help at all with any suggestions. I ordered chips with queso as an appetizer. The chips where greasy, the queso was cold!!! Total YUK! I returned the queso and asked for more salsa, i happen to really like J Alexanders salsa, the waiter looked at me like a dog looks at his owner (looks at you with a blank stare and turns his head!) and says that he has to charge us for more salsa!!! Hmmmm- not a good start! He brought the salsa (later checked and DID NOT charge us). I'm not ordering queso ever again. I then proceeded to order a hamburger with grilled onions and sauteed mushrooms on the side . The burger comes with cheese on it! I have been ordering burgers for 40 years and NEVER order CHEESE burgers! The waiter proceeds to tell me that's how they come??? Perhaps i made a mistake? When you order a hamburger you get a cheeseburger? NOW, to give the restaurant credit, they remade me a burger with out cheese. So the waiter tells me that is how they have it on the menu. The menu says cheeseburger? I checked and he was right, BUT I ORDERED A HAMBURGER!!!!! So in this case who is right? I think i am........ J. Alexanders will be off my radar for a while.

First off it was at somerset ,so i had high expectations... I assumed that it was going to be a a certain way ..well.. anyway. is that mall profiling?? It was a nice spot, decor/ambience wise. The service was pretty good and that spich con queso dip is AH-MAAZING. Yeah and I dipped the my chicken fingers in it..Tasteee. You dont have to do that though. The chocolate was even better. I told the waiter to make sure he gave me a healthy piece and he actually did!..or maybe i just got lucky. It seemed to be an after work spot according to all of the brooks brothers and Banana Republic suitage at the bar. I'd definitely go back..good date place too.

Have been dining at this location of J. Alexander's for years. It is located within Somerset Collections which is an upscale mall in Troy. Having run out of my fave perfume, and Needless Markup ( Neiman Marcus) being the only retailer of this particular perfume, I thought, time to cross the border, call an old friend, and drag him through the mall with me. He was a tad late flying in from a business trip, so it gave me time to grab a pager from the restaurant and head for Neiman. There are quite a few things I like about J's. First and foremost, the staff and ambiance. Always courteous, clean attire, and seemingly in a good mood. The bar is where I like to eat because I used to be able to smoke there, and now just a habit. There are lovely booths for lovebirds, but I like the mingle of the bar. Being extremely particular of my wine, which is all I drink, I also like being served 4 different glasses to taste. I knew it would be a bottle nite, and receiving a text from my friend who has a palate for fine wine, I chose a lovely, floral, buttery white with a hint of citrus, a Santa Margherita...began chilling with my wine as my friend arrived telling me I was a sight for sore eyes. Now that's the way to start a nite. He ordered a double goose/rocks/twist and the tie came off. Comfort zone at J's, as I call it. We decided, or shall I say, he decided to skip the bar, grab a booth because it was quite loud with very hung-over people from the weekend. Our server seemed tired. Maybe hung-over too. But I don't look down my nose at any server anywhere, asked him his name, as I always do, and smiled because I knew my friend could be a snot. Broke the ice and away we went. I decided to start with the mesclun spring mix salad that had an amazing aroma of bitterness/freshness with vinagrette on the side. My friend ordered the infamous coleslaw dripping in blue cheese to complement his vodka. I was working on my second glass of wine and feeling for something lite for dinner, as far away from red meat and potato as I could get. We both decided to not ruin the fab bottle of white and order the Ahi tuna as a main. Now we're talking. It was perfect. The aroma/ taste of the wine and the utter melt of rare tuna made my palate scream "sensual food". I'm not the kind of restaurant eater that wants a plate full, I want to taste and relish. I asked the server to skip all the heavy carbs as sides and steam some vegetables, with balsamic. My friend opted for smashed, which are a staple here, and of course, his fork ended up in my mouth, from his enticing, which actually screwed up my taste buds. Not that the potatoes weren't delicious, just heavy. Another glass of wine and I knew how I wanted to end dinner. So did he. I ordered a B-52 coffee minus the whip, he ordered coffee and cointreau...and that horribly decadent carrot cake. Best I have ever had. Enticement, two mouthfuls of that warm, gooey cake, lala land. Service great as always, food and company delish, ambiance a plus. Too bad we don't have places like this in Windsor.

I've been coming to J's for years and now I work at Somerset and am a frequent diner at this chain. You need to know that they don't take reservations and it's a popular restaurant, so you might not want to show up hungry at around 6-8pm because you're taking a pager. Best to call ahead and see if there's a wait, then plan to be seated or walk around the mall for awhile. The best food on the menu is the cheeseburger. They come with shoestring potatoes, but what you may not know is that you can substitute the fries with any other side (I usually rotate between smashed potatoes and the orzo pasta salad). Also remember to ask for a side of honey mustard if you're getting the chicken fingers (my other favorite). If you're visiting J's in the summer, save room for their homemade key lime pie--one of the best I've ever had! Enjoy your lunch or dinner!!!

This is my second best place for prime rib. And I chose to review this location because this location in Troy is my favorite J. Alexander location. The booths are great for dates and get her the chocolate cake with ice cream and she'll be grateful you did!

A good place for a fairly quick lunch (or long if you want). Business approrpriate. They have $1 valet... Food is good. There's a little something for everyone. Better than most other "American food" chain restaurants... And not everything is drenched in sugarry glazes like many American food chains serve. I like the tuna burger. Excellent service.. To me the prices seem on par with other restaurants, not unreasonable.

The food is great. Season just right. One of my favorites. The atmosphere is nice. The menu is great, lots of options. The services is friendly. Although a little pricy the portions are large enough to share or take home.

Great atmosphere. Try the onion rings for apps. Good selection of wines.
