Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

El Patio M.
The Authentic Mexican Food !

This place made me fall in love with Mexican cuisine. I and my husband ordered chicken Guadalajara and Chile rellano. The quantity was quite a lot and both of us ended up packing the leftover for dinner. The flavor and presentation of food was excellent. I am craving for it as I am writing :) I love the fact that they serve food on hot ceramic plates. So your food stays warm for a very long time. The place itself is quite nice and cozy. The surprising part is the price. Generally, I feel that with lower prices in typical restaurants, there is a compromise on quality of food. But this place offers more value for your money without compromising on taste, presentation or hygiene.

I love Mexican food. Our former favorite spot has disappointed lately, so we wanted to give something new a shot. Glad we chose El Patio! It is a little bit out of the way for us, but it was worth the drive. Queso fundito was really good. Nice price too, $4!? Sweet. The Texas margaritas were yummy and a pitcher for $18 was a bargain. I made my own combo with a tostada, enchilada and a flauta. The flauta was unlike others I've had and I probably won't order it again. But I liked the tostada and enchilada. My husband loved his chimichangas with pork. Most places only offer chicken or beef. He really enjoyed it. The chips and salsa were also very good. Very friendly service as well. We will be back to eat our faces off soon.

Solid Mexican food in the northern suburbs! Thank you Yelp :) The horchata is served out of a pitcher and has unlimited refills, which was awesome. The tacos were great, and so were the rice and beans. They only have mild salsa, but it was great too. Actual Hispanic people work here who speak Spanish, so that's always a good sign. They play soccer games on TV, so you get the whole experience.

Our family (myself, my wife and our two young kids) are huge fans of this restaurant. The food on the adult menu is great (at least one of us gets the chimichunga every time, sometimes both) and the kids love their tacos and quesadillas. Their drinks are good and the small pitcher of maragrita makes a glass about $2 per. Some of the wait staff can be a bit gruff at times, but that's never taken away from our experience, and has yet to stop us from coming back. Definitely the best value in the area when it comes to tasty Mexican food.
(5)Heather G.
I loved this place but last time I was here they were really rude to me. I can with my boyfriend and I only ordered food. When my food came, I didn't have anymore salsa and the man working there told me I couldn't get it because I only ordered one dish. That I would have to pay to get more salsa. He said it in a really rude way too. I understand that they don't want people just coming in and giving out free chips and salsa, but I needed it for my meal! He could have been a lot nicer. After, the man was pretty much ignoring us and was not friendly. In the end they charged us 85 cents for the salsa, which isn't a huge deal, but I did not like the way the situation was handled. I loved coming here and loved the food but I think I am going to have to find a New Mexican place after my experience.
(2)Christina S.
One of my favorite Mexican spots in the area! Been here twice & will continue to come back for more.....love the tortilla chips and that oh-so-fresh salsa. Yummy! So generous on the refills! Both occasions we indulged in the same dish, as it was that good the 1st time. Enchiladas Verde is fabulous, although the spice level is not always the same. That's ok though. The rice too is delicious. We also had the Grande Fajita Quesadilla. Hot, fresh, perfectly grilled veg. combined w/ big strips of juicy chicken. The service is bar none...super friendly, and the food is served speedily. This will be a new go-to. Oh yeah, you can't beat the prices. Check this place out. I don't think you will be disappointed.
(5)Truth S.
Best Mexican around, I absolutely love their burritos and their cheese dip is to die for! Happy yelping~
(4)Melanie B.
Great, fresh food! Excellent prices and very quick service. Casual booth atmosphere, but festive and clean. Perfect for a quick filling tasty Mexican meal! Chips and salsa were also fresh and tasted perfect.
(5)Holly S.
This place is a solid 4star! The chips and salsa are to die for and so is the beef mixture in the hard shell tacos. Portions are huge and price is very cheap. I had the taco and stuffed pepper it came with beans and guac if I remember correctly it was like $5! This place is perfect for lunch- food comes out very quick! Try them out of you're in the area :)
(4)Amy D.
I like the enchilada a lotta. Almost as much as a Piñata. The service was a bit slow but the food was good!
(4)Jeff P.
I had the Grande Fajita Quesadilla with steak. Awesome! First visit, hopefully not my last ( not near me), Attentive staff, great food, and reasonable prices.
(5)Rena S.
The food is pretty good. It is good AmeriMexican not a place I would come in search of very authentic food, but next time I crave fajitas and cheese dip (which let's face it is pretty often) I will be back! The restuarant is clean. Good portion sizes, I am definitely not leaving hungry. Most of the wait staff seems pretty good, our waiter, however, seems to have disappeared. All in all it was good food, and I will continue coming until I find another AmeriMexican place closer to me that is better!

Day 4 of my Mexican food around work continues. I have driven by this place for years and never stopped in. So glad I did today.! I came in about 11:45. Was seated and given my chips and salsa right away. The salsa is like jarred salsa, kind of watery and no kick. I love spicy so I added some hot sauce form the table to give it some heat. The waiter took my order and no joke-2 minutes later my piping hot food was out! I hardly had enough time to check in. I ordered the enchiladas Verde. I love this dish so I like to compare place to place; It was not what I was thinking. It was marked spicy on the menu, so that is a main reason I was intrigued. I thought I'd be getting a green, chili or tomatillo based sauce. This was brown and red. Interesting... First the rice. It was okay. It did have chilies (green) in it but they were mild. The rest was a bit bland but I'd call it "standard" Mexican rice. Now the E.V. ....MMM so good! I tasted the sauce separately and man it DID have a kick! If you don't like heat don't get this. It had a burst of fresh flavor and then it was rounded out by some chili heat. Not burn your mouth, but definitely cleared my sinuses. I then pulled out the chicken form inside to inspect. It was reddish which denotes it did have a marinade it soaked in. Good. It was shredded, but not as finely as I would have liked. I got some bigger chunks some bits I wish had been more pulled. When I ate a combined bite, I was very happy. SO much flavor, spicy, lime, cilantro-mmm. That was worth every penny. I watched everybody who came in get their food just as fast as me. Maybe lunchtime on a Thursday is a good time, because people were also commenting on the speed of their service. I only saw my waiter to order and then was given the check after someone else had taken my cleared plate. If I had needed a refill or more chips, I'm not sure my waiter would have been the one to help, or if someone else may have spotted me. Overall it was a good experience and I will be back to try something else. You do bring your check up, they do not take it up for you.
(4)Tara J.
Love the place. The food is always fresh. They have the best salsa. The prices are reasonable. They also have a location in Waterford. Give them both a try.
(5)Sarah S.
I will start off by saying- I love Mexican food! I was excited to see something new along the route I was taking Friday night, so my boyfriend and I stopped in. The ONLY thing that we had that was good was the chips and salsa and the margaritas. I had the cheese enchiladas, the cheese they used was beyond processed (think kraft singles) and the red sauce was canned for sure. If the only thing in the enchiladas is cheese, I expect it to be real. This also was the same thing for the queso, it didnt even stick to the chips! I will not be returning back ever. Although its a drive, I would rather spend my time and money at any place in Mexican Town downtown than here again.

This will be a quick review since I am writing it on one visit. Clean. Veryclean and bright. :) Big menu, so it can take some time to read everything and figure out what you want. Everything we had was good EXCEPT the regular soft tacos. Hubs and I ordered different things to share and try, and the soft taco shell tasted like cardboard. Everything else was very good!! The rice was moist and had nice flavor and seasoning. Hubs ordered a burito that had some sort of green sauce/salsa on it and it was sooo good! Everything was hot and well presented. The only bummer was the taco. We will be back!
(4)Jenny Z.
Went here for the first time with my family, and it was a great experience! Clean, comfortable interior with ample seating. Good was delicious and portions were huge; each dish was enough for two meals. Impressive quality and quantity for such a good price! The service was also terrific--fast, attentive, and really generous. They noticed us going to town on the complimentary basket of chips and salsa, so they refilled it twice with no hesitation at all. I also got quick refills on my horchata. I'll definitely be back!
(5)Tim B.
It's in a convenient location very easy to find. Place is nicely decorated and good size, won't have to wait long for a table. The waiters are friendly and seat you quickly and instantly bring over chips and salsa. I got the full order of Chimichangas which were deceptively small. They look smaller than you would think but are packed full of meat. Definitely worth the $8.99 I paid. I also got a medium Margarita which went down smooth and was very tasty. $5.00 for 16oz is fairly priced although it could be better. All in all it was a satisfying dining experience and I could definitely see this being a good restaurant for a group of friends getting dinner and a drink.
(5)Todd J.
Not the pinnacle of Mexican but reliable, and the fish tanks keep your kids entertained. Super fast always.
(4)Terry K.
El Patio has a hardworking crew who provide good customer service and a clean restaurant but that's about it. The prices are great until you realize that the steak in your fajitas has more fat than protein. Poor quality meat here. What I believe happens is that they chop it up finely and season it so well in their tacos, burritos and enchiladas that you simply can't tell it's low grade. This was a one and done dining experience for me as there's simply too many good faux Mexican spots around that have better food imho.
(3)Abigail H.
I've got a food baby now...:) this place was AWESOME!!! My husband and I have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant for over a year and a half and this place was GREAT!! Service was prompt and food was delicious! I ordered ACP (it's chicken strips, rice, grilled onions, and cheese sauce) I've been looking for a place to make this dish since we've moved here, FINALLY this place knew what it was and made it GREAT! My husband ordered the SanJose Special...there was nothing left on his plate when he was done! He had CHUNKS of beef in it, not ground beef. My husband even loved the salsa and even though food came out quickly we went through two bowls of it! If you are looking for good mexican this is the place to go!!!! We will definitely be back! :)
(5)David C.
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Detroit area. It is more restaurant style food than authentic food. More authentic Mexican food I'll go to La Mexicana in Pontiac (other locations around Detroit area). Most consistent Mexican restaurant in the area. The guacamole salad that comes with some entrees is always buttery creamy. Absolutely heavenly with a flour tortilla. The bean with cheese on the entrees varies a little bit from time to time. When they are on, they are the best tasting beans I've tasted. I usually pick something from the grill, most often it is one of the steak dinners. If you want a cheap steak dinner, this is the place I go to.
(5)David S.
This Mexican food is very good. The service was fantastic and very attentive. Although our waiter spoke very broken English, he understood our order and answered question effectively in English. A neighboring table he was serving spoke to him in Spanish. He carried on a conversation with them in Spanish. The employees were very friendly and smiled often. I had the enchalata supremas which included one beef, one chicken and one cheese enchalata. My daughter enjoyed the brown sauce on her chicken. Two of the three in our party had left overs to bring home. The chips and salsa kept coming and were very good with just the right amount if kick in spice to satisfy the senses. I was very pleasantly surprised that the bill was only about $30.00 for the three of us (including a 20% tip). This place is not fancy, but clean and nicely decorated. I will definitely return again in the future.
(4)Cheryl L.
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. I try to have something different every time I go, and everything I've had is great. The service is fast, I mean lightning speed. As soon as you sit down, a server is at your table within milliseconds with chips and salsa. The pricing is very reasonable for the portions you get....and the portions are huge. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because they will let you pay separately, but only at the register. This can cause a huge backup when there are big groups and everyone is trying to figure out that was theirs on the bill. If they can just separate bills when you are ordering your food, it would be superb.
(4)Azmath A.
The food was horrible. The waiter didn't even speak english. The place was really really bad. I definitely will not be coming here again. They need to change up the staff real quick. I asked what's the most popular thing on the menu and he says and I quote "uh, I'm sorry no" then after we ordered the guy was talking on his phone the whole time and I can here him clearly talking loud as hell. I'm definitely not coming back here.
(1)Tim K.
I hate writing short reviews, but sometimes short and sweet can get the job done just as good. I was shockingly surprised in a good way with this place. No complaints from me. Service was excellent, food was good and prices were very reasonable. I ate here with a coworker of mine and had a lunch entree which included complimentary chips and salsa, a drink and tip for around the same price as "value meal" at McDonalds. Can't beat that.
(4)Lesley R.
Amazing, delicious! The best mexican we have had a long time. So hard to find that perfect "mexican" food. This place is so good! We both had chicken chimichangas the chicken was seasoned perfectly, the sauce they use on top was nice not heavy. Pretty perfect!
(5)Elizabeth D.
Meh.... just okay.
(3)Swapnil S.
Price is super cheap and food is super delicious. Really liked this restaurant. I definitely recommend this place.
(5)Elizabeth P.
My Food was very delicious. I ordered the burrito Verde which had s nice spicy kick. The chips and salsa was also delicious. Salsa was mild but putting both types of hot sauces in the salsa made it spicy and even more delicious. The waitstaff even was on time and friendly. I think someone posted a negative comment about how small their margaritas are on here. Let me clear that up they have size small, medium, large, small pitcher, and a large pitcher if you can read the menu I would advise some glasses. I ended up getting the small strawberry one which was good and also had a good amount of tequila in it. I will be back to this place for sure!! Can't wait for my next visit.
(5)Tonia C.
The fajitas are amazing. Service is great and the staff are all SO friendly. Portion sizes are large and you can't beat the prices.
(5)Chuck S.
I've been on a quest lately to find the best mid-tier Mexican restaurant in metro Detroit and that quest ended tonight. I'm fantastical about Mexican/Tex-Mex food in general but I'm also particular; it needs to be prepared and presented correctly (regardless of price point) and I'm pleased to say El Patio delivers in all aspects. It's inexpensive, the service was great, everything was fresh and delicious and everyone I was with loved their meals too. Like I said, everything was great, but their guacamole is a spectacular, when you go make sure you order a side, you won't regret it!
(5)Nora Z.
Fried ice cream was delish
(5)Amy S.
You get what you pay for. Prices are low because food is sub-par. Enchilada sauce tastes out of the can. They had the nerve to charge us extra for salsa because the rule is 1 bowl per person and we ordered more than that. IT DID NOT STATE THAT ANYWHERE ON THE MENU NOR DID OUR SERVER TELL US WE WOULD BE CHARGED EXTRA. When I asked the manager about it, he said it will be printed on their new menu coming out next week and did not offer to take it off the bill. In addition, he incorrectly applied our coupon so we ended up paying more in the end. We will never be dining there again!
(1)Sandy a.
We love this place. They have the best Mexican food. Chips and salsa as soon as you walk in and best margaritas
(5)Tee T.
So I went to this spot based on the reviews so I will give the pros and cons of what I liked. Pros: the wait staff is very friendly, inviting atmosphere and very attentive. The salsa was pretty good, chips could have been better but it wasn't bad. The tacos and rice were the best for me. They give a nice portion and the tacos were not greasy, I don't like deep fried grease. The meat was flavorful, I got the beef and cheese tacos. Cons: The chicken enchilladas were not that great. They tasted too chicken soupy and the sauce was not that great. All in all I would go here again, however it is not close and I traveled a nice lil distance based on the reviews. Mexican food is my fav so I didn't mind but it was kind of a let down because expected more from the previous reviews. If I'm in the area I will stop by but coming all the way from 12mile and evergreen in southfield it is not worth it.
(3)Christine B.
I just moved to the area and was having trouble trying to find a decent Mexican place and I have finally found it. I have noticed that it's hard to find good places to eat in the area that also accompanies space. When I walked in it was dead but the service was fantastic and the staff had the place spotless. The lunch special included a taco salad that not only was delicious but incredibly filling. Not to mention that it was only 5.25 for my lunch. The man friend and I are very satisfied with this visit and will be back. Also if you know anything about salt water fish tanks, check it out. It's a nice one.
(5)Maribet M.
First time here. Went on a Friday night. Great service. Very attentive. Good food and you have to get the Texas margarita. Better tequila. I had the Mole Poblano and it was very tasty. I got the medium size margarita which was perfect for me. You also have small and large to choose from. Definitely would come back to try the tradition choices.
(4)Stephanie H.
Pretty good lots of vegetarian options! The menu is huge and pretty cheap! Tons the specials and combos
(4)Steven B.
Before this place opened up my family would regularly go to Grand Azteca but this joint is really close to us and the food is good. Really convenient.
(3)Lauren A.
Best Mexican food I've had in Michigan. I could eat here everyday! Not to mention their Margs are totes authentic.
(5)Jean S.
I was pleasantly surprised by this little restaurant. It is located in a strip mall off Big Beaver but we decided to give it a try based on the other Yelp reviews. The restaurant itself is clean and the wait staff is quick, efficient and friendly. We were seated right away at 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon but by the time we left, it was getting pretty busy in there. Our chips, salsa and drinks were constantly being refilled, which is a plus in my book. I swear, I could live off chips and salsa. The chips are warm and tasted fresh, as does the salsa, though it was a bit mild for my taste. I had the shrimp fajitas, which were to die for. My husband had the steak fajitas and, while he loved the flavor of the fajitas, the pieces of steak were tiny and scarce (though enough to fill him - this is not a typical restaurant portion of meat which tends to be way too much). Our girls had boring cheeseburgers and chicken tenders, which they claimed tasted just fine. I had a glass of sangria and my only complaint about it is that the glass was too small! We would certainly return for the shrimp fajitas and great service, but my husband will probably not order the steak fajitas again.
(4)Stephanie W.
Quiet atmosphere, friendly staff, always great food at a reasonable price. Highly recommend the chicken flautas.
(5)Reyna M.
Just moved to this area recently, and I've been looking for a good Mexican restaurant. I've gone to a few in Detroit but I prefer this place. It was clean well kept, the staff was friendly and very attentive. The food was delicious and I will be back for more flan.
(5)The Critic C.
I love El Patio. the service is super fast and friendly. the food is always good and these guys do a really good business. It's no frills here and the experience is always consistant. I really enjoy the beef Chimmys and most everything else I've tried. The beef in the chimmys is like pot roast style and not just ground beef. The guys running El Patio keep the chips and salsa coming and drink refils flowing. you will never sit longer than 30 seconds with an empty glass or empty basket of chips. Really great place for a reasonably priced, fast Amerixican dinner or lunch. As long as these dudes stay the same I'll be coming back for more. Muchas gracious.
(4)Devina M.
Amazing mexican food. It's your standard mexican food place. But these guys know how to season their meat. Everything is so flavorful and delicious. Not super greasy. I love it.
(5)Chet G.
Excellent service with a smile. Food is very good. Prices are very decent. $22 feeds 2 hungry men very well. Atmosphere is nice. Clean place. In a shopping plaza overlooking Big Beaver rd. has their own parking. Tractor trailers welcome in their lot. Nice spanish music plays in the background while you eat.
(5)Jimmy N.
My first time here and I had the dinner special and it was great our waiter was very friendly too we be coming back to try other things on the menu
(4)Bonnie W.
This place is great. We actually threw a baby shower there recently and their prices were extremely reasonable. The food was really good and the service was great. The guys worked really hard to make sure everyone had everything they needed and the food came out really fast and were nice sized portions. They provided chips and salsa for everyone. The manager was extremely helpful in getting us set up. All in all, great experience.
(5)Robin E.
The Troy location of El Patio took over from a long time family restaurant, so this should explain the fish tank! The service is amazing, really hard workers. The complimentary salsa and chips are excellent and brought to the table promptly. Traditional Mexican food at reasonable prices. I recommend the Texas Margaritas! The food is served piping hot and within minutes of ordering. Very nice and hardest working employees around! The only fault is that the atmosphere is not as festive as it could be. Although they play traditional Mexican music, the atmosphere would be greatly improved if they'd dim the lights a little. As a long time Troy resident, I am so happy to see that El Patio's business has picked up after a slow start.
(5)Jamie C.
Went there last night for the first time. Was pleasantly surprised with how good everything was. The wait staff was super attentive, the food was quick to be served and tasted great. I got the chicken enchiladas verde and it was awesome! I will definitely come back
(5)Ani G.
Nice little Mexican restaurant. Food was delicious.
(4)Roger I.
Yesterday was the first time I went to El Patio; I sat at the counter by the kitchen. I ordered a small margarita and was given a complementary bowl of chips and salsa while I looked at the menu. as I ate the chips and salsa, I knew I was looking at getting a great meal. The salsa was the way I love it, little bits of herbs, tomato and onion. It was delicious. I brought the food home, and it was a hit. The Botana, quesadillas and guacamole that I had brought home were loved by all. The pint of guacamole was completely eaten, and my family is fussy about their guac. By the way, the top shelf margarita that I had while I was ordering food was excellent. We will be going there again. Staff was polite, attentive and seemed generally happy to be there. That always makes it a good place to eat.
(5)Tom M.
Wow, now serving Mexican beer! Quesadilla was fantastic! Huge menu and great food!
(5)Akshar T.
The salsa with the chips is good while the guacamole is not. Doesn't look or taste fresh. The Chimichangas are good while Chicken Enchiladas are average.
(3)James H.
My family really enjoys this place. The food is fantastic and the service has always been good for us. The authentic flavor really comes through. Easily the best Mexican restaurant that I've been to in Michigan. Considering I travel to Mexico a lot for work and have had "real" Mexican food, I'm really impressed with this place.
(5)Steve W.
I recently had lunch here, and the chicken fajitas were good. I plan to come back again soon.
(4)Tiffany D.
SOSO I visited this restaurant when I knew it would not be busy, an hour before dinner rush on Sunday. The host seemed disappointed that I wanted to sit at the counter. It turned out the host was also my server and seemed disappointed that I was there at all. I ordered a large margarita, and had to ask to see a menu. The margarita was from a mix, I was not impressed. I ordered chalupas as an appetizer. Chalupas at El Patio consist of a warm corn tortilla topped with refried beans, guacamole, lettuce, and tomato. It was VERY bland. I topped it with some of their salsa but that was very mild and didn't add much flavor. The waiter tried to give me my bill before I was even done eating but I said I'd like to order an entrée after I finish my drink. He asked how long that would be. I felt rushed, the place was dead, but he was acting like I was a nuisance. I asked what his favorite item on the menu was, so I could have the best thing they offer. He recommended the Pollo Loco. Again, flavorless and even dry. I can say that the bathrooms were clean and the prices were low. The atmosphere was similar to that of a Rams Horn or Big Boy. I gave my usual 30% tip and left, never to return.
(1)Anthony Y.
I have taken my family to eat here twice. I have a family of four with a 4 and 2 year old. The kids meals are good portion and reasonable. The menu is standard Mexican flare seemingly authentic. Food was served hot, accurate, and fast both of our visits. I feel this is family friendly restaurant with good prices, good food, good selection, and excellent waitstaff. We certainly will be back.
(4)Christopher N.
Last night was my first time at El Patio. This was one of the best and most fresh Mexican meals I've had in a long time. We were greeted promptly at the door, and given a clean table right away. Almost immediately we had hot chips and fresh salsa and a waiter to explain the menu to us. The margaritas were awesome, salsa was just spicy enough, and the food was outrageously good for the price. We stopped by this place on a whim, but honestly, we'll be back. If you haven't been to El Patio before, do yourself a favor and stop by. You won't be disappointed!
(5)Molida K.
I had a Google offer and decided to use it. The service was a little slow but I understood because it got busy quite fast. At first it was just us and one other table but in literally half an hour, the whole place was packed. I ordered the chile relleno and enchilada and was not really impressed. Even though the prices were cheap and the staff was friendly, it still did not make up for lack of flavor.
(2)Chris K.
The food is amazing, the staff is great and very polite! The service is fast! We first tried it out last year and the first time we were all blown away by how good they were. I've told many of my friends about it and my neighbors and they said the place beats all the most expensive restaurants like Azteca for ex. They all came back to me with no complaints about El Patio. For those of you wondering about the fish tank, the place in the past use to be called Antons which was a Greek tropical like restaurant that's why some of the decor seems a little unusual now that it is called El Patio and is Mexican. I'll be honest Anton's was really good when they were there, the burgers were yummy and they also had a good breakfast menu. They had 2 fish tanks at 1 point. The other one use to be closer to the bathrooms. That should clear up a couple things that seem unusual about El Patio. The place itself hasn't changed much. They might have painted it before they switched over but other than that it is still pretty much the same on the inside.
(5)Rebeca F.
Nice little Mexican restaurant... The place is clean, lots of booths, the decor is a bit strange... fish tanks? The service was quick and promptly, the two guys that took care of us were super nice. As for the food, they have a wide range of plates, lunch and dinner combos. The nachos and salsa were ok, and the food was well made. However, there was nothing remarkable about it. I had the chicken burrito ranchero with beans and my husband had a taco, enchilada combo: good portions, fresh ingredients, tasted ok, so no complains. Will I return to El Patio? Sure, why not? It's a very nice place to have a warm meal, nothing else, nothing more.

My family went here for the first time tonight. We all really, really liked it! The guacamole and refried beans were probably the best I've ever gotten in any mexican restaurant! Both so creamy and flavorful. The chips were fabulous, not the slightest bit greasy. To be honest, nothing we ordered was the least bit greasy - that's a hard task to accomplish in a mexican restaurant! The salsa was a bit one note, but it's hard to complain about it, because well...the one note was a really good note! So, in a nutshell, I'd say this place serves very nicely prepared homey type mexican food by a polite, conscientious wait staff in a clean, bright but unassuming atmosphere. We will DEFINITELY go back again. Soon, even!

I really like this place! The food is great, and the people are really attentive. I agree there are some decor issues, but when you are chewing you won't really care about them. The one suggestion I have is to take payments at the table instead of having patrons go to the register. The food is more expensive than a diner, but paying at the register is what a diner would have you do.

I have been eating there somewhat regularly. The pricing is good, the quality of the food is average. I had a lunch portion steak fajita. It was slightly over cooked and tough to chew. I had a coupon for 15% off food, but the waitress wouldn't honor it because she said I had to order 2 lunches to use it. There was a coupon next to the 15% off one that said buy 1 lunch or dinner and get 2nd half off. She said that meant the 15% off one can't be used! There were 2 coupons on the page. I understand the coupon saying buy 2 to get half off on second lunch did not meet the criteria. To not honor the 15% off coupon was wrong. She made me feel like I was trying to trick her into a discount. Bottom line is it appears they don't want to honor coupon promotions they send out. Customer service was lacking in my opinion. Update: Only fair to say manager admitted mistake in not honoring coupon and made restitution. Wait staff is good. Food quality average.

I used to go to the one in Milford before it closed down. The food is good and priced right. $5.50ish for lunch, big portions too. The decor is a little weird because they took over some Island restaurant but the menu is the same as other El Patio restaurants. The super special or whatever it's called on the dinner menu is a ton of food for under $10, I used to order that and have enough for lunch the next day left over. The food is pretty good, better then most Mexican joints, it's not meant to wow you.

Just okay. Good chips and salsa. Great wait staff. However, chicken dishes are all the same. You get the same chicken in every dish, making the only thing that differentiates the dishes is the type of shell that it is served in. Better than a grand azteca, but not as good as the mexican village in utica.

I was told that this was the place to go for Mexican...umm...it wasn't bad, but it was rather bland and as I say "engrigonizado". Not a whole bunch of flavor, and I don't remember ever seeing an orange salsa ranchera...I would go back if that is where others were going.

Have to agree with David. I tasted a definite similarity to chef boyardee in my dinner, which was supposedly chicken mole poblano. There were no poblanos even looking at my sauce, let alone in it. I even said to the waiter, this mole tastes like tomatoes, it's kind of weird. He said yeah. I asked if he was from Mexico and he said yes. I asked if he ever ate mole like this and he said no. I guess next time I should ask the waiter what he would eat. Only reason for two stars is that I did actually like the beans, rice, salsa, chips, and guacamole. Which is good since I couldn't eat my dinner.

We've been meaning to try this place for awhile now and finally got the chance to stop in tonight. We were a bit worried at first because there weren't many people there, but eventually they started filling up. We've lived in the area for a few years now, and haven't been able to find many really good Mexican places, but we were pleasantly surprised with El Patio -- their food was very good and the service was great. Everyone was very friendly and and we got our food quickly. We both got Fajitas -- I got chicken and my husband got the steak/chicken/shrimp combo, and it was all excellent with generous portions. The food was authentic and simply prepared, and the guac and pico were both fresh and full of flavor. I even enjoyed the refried beans, which I usually won't even eat. Another plus was the price -- we got a lot of food, plus 2 drinks, and the bill was under $30! We'll definitely be coming back here!

Just wanted to update that the last few times we've been here the fish tanks have been spotless :-)

I thought that this was a new restaurant but then I came here last week and found out they have a few other locations. The food was good but not the greatest. The service was excellent and very friendly. Since it's so close to me I will be coming here again.

Finally! We found a Mexican restaurant near our home in Royal Oak that is great and inexpensive! I ordered a shrimp quesadilla fajita and unlike other area restaurants, you get more that two shrimp!! It's full of shrimp, peppers and onions and its wonderful. My husband had a combination dinner and is very happy as well. Salsa and cheese dip are good as well as the pitcher of margaritas. But here is the best part... It is spotless!! Since we have been here they have sweepered the floor and are actually going around cleaning the booth seats! Good! Affordable! Clean! What more could you ask for!?!

Good service, poor food. I went there for lunch April 3rd about 11:40am and noticed the old restaurant's sign is still up despite this place being opened for weeks now. Inside they still have palm trees and I could smell the fish tank. The waiter brought chips and salsa and the chips tasted like cardboard. The salsa was not exceptional but it was ok. I ordered the #5 dinner with two enchiladas, rice, and beans ($9.75). The food came fast like most Mexican places. The sauce on top of the enchiladas looked like an orange flavorless gravy. When I tasted it, it reminded me of Chef Boyardee sauce; I could not taste any Mexican spices at all. The tortilla was doughy. The beans were fairly flavorless. The rice was ok and not too dry; that was the only thing I liked about the meal. The service was good and he checked on my table multiple times asking about drink refills. In summary it was bland and there are far better Mexican places at same or cheaper cost. I do not plan on going back.
