I have been going to New Seoul Garden since I moved to Metro Detroit two years ago, and it is my favorite Korean restaurant in the area! Last night, my husband and I took my 93-year-old grandfather and my cousin's family from Florida out for Korean food for the very first time. I made a reservation in advance for our party of nine, and I let New Seoul Garden know that we wanted to do BBQ at a high table (not a low table) because my grandfather would be in our party. The staff was extraordinarily accommodating! I go to New Seoul Garden frequently, and my family was impressed at how I was regarded by the staff of this wonderful Southfield Korean restaurant. My family loved listening to my attempts at speaking Korean and enjoyed trying to say words like "kamsa habnida" (thank you) as well. They were really interested in the dining customs and were excited to try Korean food. My cousin sees my posts about Korean food on Facebook, and I'm proud to report that I peaked his curiosity. This is why I refer to myself as Korea's unofficial ambassador the United States, by the way. Because my family was unfamiliar with Korean food, I ordered for everyone. I ordered three bulgogi and three dalk gui entrees, one dolsot bibimbap, and one chapchae because these are all foods that many Westerners enjoy. I also ordered sides of white rice and barley tea for everyone. The kids were entertained by the fact that I grilled the beef & chicken at the table, and they liked much of the food despite the fact that they rarely eat anything other than pizza, macaroni and cheese, etc. A couple of the kids were even willing to try some banchan (small side dishes that contain...(oh, no!)...vegetables). American kids eating vegetables? Say it's not so! (Sarcasm) My awesome 93-year-old grandfather whose favorite restaurant is a buffet chain, surprisingly, loved the food! He even tried to eat with chopsticks for the first time in his life! I was so happy because both my grandfather and Korea mean so much to me! My cousin and his wife loved the food! I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Korean food is the best food on the planet, after all! I have gone to New Seoul Garden with small groups and large groups. I have tried typical Korean dishes such as dolsot bibimbap and less well known dishes such as hwe dupbap. Every single time, the food has been fantastic and the staff has been wonderful. In fact, the manager even allowed me to interview him for a school project at one point. This is MY Korean restaurant. It's the one I take people to when I want to show them the glory of Korean food and Korean hospitality. Thanks to New Seoul Garden for always welcoming me so warmly and thanks for the wonderful, wonderful food!

Hubby and I tend to order the same things everytime we're at the New Seoul Garden. Maybe since it was New Year's, we broke out of our routine. We tried the lunch special soup (whose name I can't remember now) and a couple appetizers. All were delicious. The sushi is really fresh and the spicy tuna is top notch. Everything we've ever had here is really tasty. And we love all of the kimchee options. The staff is friendly and helpful. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it again.

My friend and I had the bi bim bap and the bbq. Despite smelling like bbq after leaving the restaurant, it was well worth it. i can't say it's the best korean food i had, but living in michigan limits your options of culture and good food. let's just say, this place is good enough.

We arrived at 9pm and wanted to sit at the bar. The bartender said he was about to close the bar so he could go home. The place advertises that it stays open until 10:30pm, those are the hours on the front door. Next we tried to sit at the sushi bar and was told that it was also closed for the night. When I tried to order a Jameson and was told they didn't have it. So I ordered something else and was grossly over charged for it. The didn't have the appetizers we wanted either. Those had been put away early. Then they rushed us out of there because they wanted to close down the registers. Dear New Seoul, if you don't want to serve people past 9pm, change your hours. You just lost me as a customer and countless others who will read this review. You'll have to charge even more for drinks to make up the difference. Also, if you go here your clothes will smell like their food. We smelled like we had been working in the kitchen.

I came to eat in last year and didn't have a good experience. Price is higher, food is in smaller portion and service was no good. Since I work nearby, I will do carry-out if I crave for sushi. Food is still good , but not worth the dining-in experience.
(2)D K.
They have friendly waitstaff, but they are terribly slow. Pricey, but the quality of food is not bad. I will say, however, that most the dishes I ordered were spicy, even considering that it's Korean cuisine. I've had Korean food elsewhere in the area and in NYC once, and New Seoul, for whatever reason, has had the spiciest dishes. The restaurant itself is nicely designed. I read some reviewers saying it had antiquated decor but I didn't see that. I had sushi once here and it's loaded, so that's nice.

A bit difficult to find (off a frontage road tucked between highway and Toys R Us). Food is EXCELLENT--Go for the table top BBQ and bi bim bop. Tip: The assortment of little free side plates is better if you go earlier in the night, and not on Sunday! Great prices on hot sake--get a whole teapot of it for about $20. Just make sure you have a designated driver because it will get you! Service is spotty--we love Ahn, ask for him if you want to do BBQ.
(4)Marisa P.
This is our favorite restaurant in the area, we go there for all special occasions. We love everyting about it, the staff, the fish pond in the front, the atmosphere, but most of all the FOOD. Love the Korean BBQ, the Panjun (sp?) appetizer, the Bi Bim Bop, and other Korean entrees. We went with my husband's co-worker who is here on assignment from Korea and even he thought it was great! They have Japanese specialities also, but we stick with the Korean - my husband LOVES Kim Chee and they always bring extra, no charge. Just a great place, man I want to go there just thinking about it. We have brought our toddler there and it is very kid friendly, the staff loves to see her and the clientele does also.
(5)Terri W.
We LOVE this place. Service is always top notch and the food is fantstic. Not one complaint.

This is my favorite korean joint in Michigan. First of all the restaurant is huge and filled with wonderful staff. All the times ive been there, either with a large or small group, ive gotten the same excellent service. They normally serves 6-8 banchans. All delicious and you can request more if you like a particular one. A korean restaurant is not complete without table grills for the bbqs! I'll have to say the bbq plates cost a little more but it comes in a generous portion. Make sure to try the samgyuksal (pork belly) aside from your regular bulgogi and kalbi. Aside from bbq dishes, id recommend the chapchea (stir fried noodle), dukbokki (spicy rice cake) and yookeh jang (spicy beef soup). Dont forget the seafood pancake (pajun). The one item that id pick on is the sundooboo. A bit too fishy for my taste. Cant say anything about their japanese items as ive never tried it other then some normal california rolls.
(4)Cathy G.
My husband and I both agree the food here is very authentic, well prepared and tastes fantastic. We always know when we dine here we won't be disappointed. Keep up the good work!
(4)Mark G.
I lived with a Korean girl for about a year. I had all types of Korean food including Korean BBQ. But I had no idea in a restaurant they bring a propane hibachi to your table and cook it right in front of you. It kind of threw me off when they asked if I wanted to eat in the kitchen. Probably should have taken them up on the offer. The owner/manager noticed I particularly enjoyed one kind of Kim chi and brought me more. It was also hilarious to see the mother yell at her son for staring at me while I was eating. Good authentic Korean food and great service. I was impressed.
(5)Nickie P.
Love cooking the bulgogi at my table. Everything I've ordered there has been good.

During a late, drunken night in a friend's garage that involved asking everyone who entered A) What they thought about Miley Cyrus (and pressuring most people to think about it for this first time & provide an answer) and B) If they thought she listened to Jay Z...the idea to go get some Korean food the next day naturally came about. Usually these kinds of drunken dreams are never realized, but a good friend sent out a text the following day and we all met up at New Seoul Garden and IT WAS GOOD, Y'ALL. I had only had Korean food once in my life prior to our trip here. My favorite parts of my first experience were: the 10,000 appetizers (proper term: Banchan), the crazy burnt rice bowl (proper term: bibimbap) & the orange at the end (proper term: orange). New Seoul Garden delivered on all of these aspects & more. The place is huge - it would be great for a large group of people. The service was kind of funny, but they kept bringing me food so I was never annoyed. The prices were very reasonable - the husband & I's dinners came to $23 total. A friend got the BBQ which was a little more pricey - but holy crap that was good too. I'll definitely be back. Perhaps my friends will arrange a birthday dinner for me there. May 2, 2010 y'all. p.s. youtube.com/watch?v=3TiP…

The wait staff was terrible. The place had barely 6 parties in the whole restaurant but felt like I had to pester them to order entrees, drink refills, or getting seated. Seemed like customers are more of an annoyance to them. I won't be an annoyance anymore because I won't be back.
(2)Justin S.
New Seoul Bulgolgi! Quick and good
(4)Kellie B.
This place makes me feel as if I've visited the Far East then arrived back in Southfield when I step out. Most of the staff is korean, and I've never met the chef but his sushi platters are so beautiful. Makes me sniffle a bit to take apart a roll that has been set out so nicely. Just a little sniff. This time while perusing the menu, I had a taste for wonton soup. Now this is not a 'Chinese American' restaurant so don't expect to find wonton on the menu. What I did find was a bowl of -- wait a meal -- called Mandoo Guk. Its beef wontons, top with slices of steak, egg drop, vegetables (at least 3 types of mushrooms, bean sprout, onions) and clear noodles in a beef broth. Soup that really eats like a meal. Wonton means 'swallowing a cloud'. After trying this dish I was in heaven. The sparse bowls of dumpling soup served at your typical chinese take out will never be the same for me. These aren't the only dishes New Seoul gets right. The summer roll (crab and shrimp with fresh veggie) is wrapped in a clear tapioca skin. Its bursting with flavor. Perfect for a friend of mine who has never tried sushi and was frightened of the taste. (pick up chopstick, insert roll here)

Great food!! they have the best champong! the service was smooth too. for sure, the best korean restaurant in detroit!!
(5)Jonny P.
New Seoul Garden is the only Korean restaurant that I have been to in Michigan & it easily stands up against the North Lincoln Avenue spots in Chicago. I've been here twice... Once for Bi Bim Bop and the second for Bulgogi. I was rushing during the second visit so I requested that they grill in the kitchen for me. The Banchans were great & the service was swift. A great lunch option in Southfield!
(4)Richard F.
There is actually a Seoul Garden in or around Troy that is the precursor to this place. That place is tiny, but it is closer to being authentic and it is a better value. I love Korean food and have travelled to Korea on several occasions. This place is just so-so. The Korean barbecue is overpriced and the Japanese food does not hit the mark. Prices are high for the quality and service can be spotty.
(2)Andrea J.
This is where I got hooked on Bi Bim Pop. It's their most popular dish for a reason, and I love all the picked vegetable side dishes. Sushi is very good and reasonable priced as well. Restaurant is large and clean; staff is attentive and happy to answer questions; parking is clean, well lit, and accessible. I have certainly not tried everything on the menu, but it appears to be very extensive. This is one of my favorite ethnic restaurants in the Southfield area.
(5)P L.
Best Korean place in Michigan!
(4)Albert E.
Best korean food in MI. BBQ portions are a lot bigger than bi bim bap in novi and more fresh, not as salty. Very authentic dish, nice decor, and friendly staff! These owners have been there forever and they know what they are doing. Can get pricey but worth every penny.
(5)Panadda A.
Authentic Korean food. Moderate price. Decent service. The only one complain is they did not give enough rice and charge $2 extra for it.
(4)Brittney S.
This place is great. The menu is huge and the staff is helpful if you are having trouble deciding what to get. The most recent time I was there I got a Korean fish soup, which was good but the fish had the bones in it still which made it difficult to eat. I will definitely be back.
(4)Raphael C.
This is another Korean Restaurant that I would recommend to anyone who enjoy Korean style seafood hot pot. The hot pot is very spicy but its hard to resist. They put all kind of seafood in it- Crabs, fishes, shrimps, clams, vegetables, tofu, noodles. You can ask for Lobster but it cost extra. It requires you to place two orders- about $40. It is enough for two people. There are many other selection of Korean entrees and Sushi. Everyone knows that they always give out those free little dishes before the entrees. I really don't like those dishes here compare to the other Korean restaurant. This place usually have live music by the sushi bar on the other side of the dinning area. Overall the service is good.
(3)Kyle S.
If you told me you were going to New seol garden I'd say wait up I'm coming too, I love the shit out of this place, amazing food and a great wait staff. I come here often for the hibachi and sake bombs. The food is awsome and makes a great place to take friends and family's for any type of celebration. This is the place you wanna take your friends that don't expierence different cuisines to often. It's a bit expensive but the portions really explain what your paying for. I've had The best dining expierence of my life here and I truley do suggest you give it a try
(5)Kalyn M.
Best Korean restaurant in Michigan. Great quality. Banchan included. Sushi is top notch. Prices are fair. Never had anything I didn't like at New Seoul.
(5)Sarah L.
Closest thing to Korean food. Service is always hospitable. The place is full of other Asian customers, which says a lot. If you're going to get sushi rolls they're ok. It's the hibachi that I go for...mmm. Not a bad place to throw a party though. The place is reasonably large enough to hold several groups of people.
(4)mike h.
i heart Korean foods. i love that when you order your food you get banchan (side dishes). Korean restaurants are the OG tapas spot. on top of the side dishes you get an entree, err you get side dishes when you order an entree, but whatever. so, this Korean spot pretty much kicks the tapas bar in its small dish behind. i'm completely biased if you haven't noticed, so this review is pretty much useless. however, i've posted pictures of 4 different, unique dishes on my lifestyle blog. if you're curious about this place i think it's in your best interest to see the food w/ your own eyeballs.
(4)Nick M.
Good value. Soondobochigai (horribly mispelled I'm sure) is awesomeness.
(4)Rodney H.
The weather turned bitter cold in Michigan, therefore thoughts turn to Tasty Korean food, the perfect winter grub. We headed to New Seoul Garden, this is my third time here, not the easiest place to find although the address is NW hwy if you are coming south you need to twist & turn along Franklin & Telegraph to reach this place. If you are a first timer then look out for Toys are Us.Service is friendly, the decor is warming, for this lunch we chose Chicken Ginseng Soup & Spicy Kimchee soup along with all the fresh Korean side dishes this is plenty of food.Praise for the Chicken Ginseng soup, masses of Chicken were served in a tasty broth, however the Spicy Kimchee soup was pretty bland. Also $28 for 2 for lunch was on the pricey side, so certainly i will return to NSG but i think they have plenty of room for improvement food wise.
(3)Brian M.
I enjoyed the ambiance at this restaurant. The food is served in traditional Korean style, and the waitress wrote my order in Korean. I also liked how they cooked your order at the table.
(4)Melissa H.
New Seoul Garden is by far one of the best Korean restaurants in the metro Detroit area. The food is always fresh and of great quality, the service is impeccable and despite the slightly higher price, it's definitely worth it. I generally get yukaejang (spicy beef and fern soup), kalbi BBQ (beef short ribs), sushi, bibimap or maeungtang (spicy fish soup) when I come here and it's always well prepared and tasty. Their BBQ is always tender and perfectly marinated whether it's chicken or beef (they offer shrimp too), the soups are made from real fish or beef stock and are ample in what's in the actual soup (fish chunks are seeped in the soup's broth, fresh and prime), and they even serve fresh cut fruit after the meal. The atmosphere is cozy and great for families, business, or couples. I've come here mostly with my family and even for birthdays they go all out. Great value, clean and welcoming atmosphere and amazing food!
(5)Sandy C.
This is my favorite Korean place. It does the BBQ over gas, not over coals, which is a negative, but still very tasty. The seafood hot pot, bolgolgi and tofu chiggae are my favorites. Try the mung bean app to start.
(4)Dan O.
One of my favorite Korean restaurants in Michigan. Out of the three Seoul Gardens (Southfield, Troy, Ann Arbor), this one is definitely the best. Their marinated galbi, bibim gooksoo and not to forget their haemul pajun (seafood pancakes) are the best I've tried in town!!
(4)Brian K.
my entire family (including distant relatives, and non immediate family) loves this place. a nice selection, and fairly priced. if you are going there for your first time i would recommend the Kalbi (marinated beef short ribs) and Neng Myun (cold buck wheat noodles in a cool beef broth). N JOY!
(4)o o.
I heard such good things about this restaurant... unfortunately it fell way short! With other good Korean restaurants around, no real reason to visit this one. Food was bland. Such a difference from Shilla. Service was attentive and ambience was pleasant. The place was busy which boggled me. Note, I didn't try the Japanese food.
(3)Taesu B.
still the best in metro detroit. get the haemool pajun (like a seafood pancake) as an appetizer. really big though.
(4)Brooke S.
The menu is extensive. You could go there for a year and maybe try everything once. I think it is also very authentic, with many interesting choices available. Of course the BBQ is fantastic. I am personally in love with the spicy pork BBQ.
(4)RAY S.
I've eaten here at least 50 times since they opened up. My family and I used to always go to the troy location until southfield opened. Southfield I feel has more of an authentic Korean look and ambiance. I think the sushi is great here. I asked the sushi chef to prepare me something off the menu and he concocted some amazing futomaki and temaki for me. He looked a little taken back at first, not sure if he should go all out or be conservative... he ended up going all out. It was excellent! I love the galbi and being able to prepare it myself on the table top grill. Besides the galbi you gotta try the large raw shrimp that you cook on the grill and dip in the oil/salt dipping sauce. The tol sot bibim bap is as good as it gets. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Highly recommended.
(4)Ryan M.
I live in chicago where there is some really good Korean BBQ places on the northwest side. We came here for my brothers birthday and New Seoul did not disappoint. I highly recommend the pajun. I am allergic to shrimp and was surprised they could accommodate my request to make it without shrimp. We did two different types of BBQ but the waiter dumped both on the grill at the same time so it was difficult to tell the difference. The service is a team effort. Wait staff wait my an alert system. When you push a button at your table it alerts the staff that a request is made and staff run to the table. I would recommend other restaurants go to this model.
(4)Scott K.
Our server took care of all 25 of us with humor, speed and spunkiness. She took our orders in bulk - "Who wants tea, show of hands? Who wants soda?" which sounded weird but worked amazingly well. I'm told with some smaller groups you may have to wait awhile to get served, but that totally was not the case for us this time. The portions were big and the food came out hot (except the sushi, naturally). I love watching people stir up their bi-bim-bops in the hot stone bowls. This is one of my wife's favorite korean restaurants, made twice as good with the japanese selections, and now I understand why.
(5)Ke F.
The most horrible dining experience in Michigan. This actually happened a while back. We went to this place for some promotion on Groupon. Waiting time was quite long, and the waiter was serving some other table with hot tofu pot, and he cut short passing by our table, overturned some soup on my arm. I got burnt immediately. The waiter was a young Asian guy, didn't apologize but said "please wait for my manager" and ran away. Then about 5 minutes later the manager came over and asked "what's wrong"? I had to explain to him what happened and showed my dirty clothes and burnt arm. Then he said sorry and left!!! Just like that.Never returned or anything.

Korean restaurants out of major Korean population areas can be lackluster but this place exceeded my expectations. I had the combo with kalbi and dang jang chigae...and it was great. Others had soon do bu and bibimbap. All very good. In the sea of fast food and chains in the area, this was a god send.
(5)Amy C.
Decent Korean barbecue place conveniently located right off the highway. Came here with a large group on a weekend night and the place was about half full. My favorite part of the meal was the seafood pancake appetizer-- it smelled heavenly and the taste didn't disappoint either. However, the barbecue part was somewhat of a letdown. Not sure if this is a weekend thing, but we didn't get to grill our own meats. The waitresses at the restaurant grilled everything for us and served it for us in a small bowl, which took a lot of fun out of the experience. Not to mention that it worsened the excruciatingly long wait for food when you're hungry. For some people, it may be nice to have someone who knows what they're doing preparing the food for you, but I would've liked to have the option to cook it myself. Additionally, I felt like I didn't get very much food for the price. The Special Galbi was one of the dishes my group ordered, and it came in two small bowls that did not seem like very much meat at all. I only felt full because they gave my table lettuce and rice as well, so I wrapped up a piece of meat and some rice in lettuce and made my own mini lettuce wraps.
(3)Bradford P.
We came here with a party of 10 people. The waitress said she couldn't make us any mixed drinks, because they were too busy. The BBQ was a letdown, like other reviewers have stated, and overcooked. It was disappointing because we had brought relatives to show off what had been a fun place with fresh, tasty food on other occasions. We don't mind paying $30/person for good service and food and drinks, but I'm afraid we won't be coming back.
(2)Phee L.
I have been there 3 times. The first two times were great. The last time was terrible: The waitress forgot one starter, had a misunderstanding of a second one (she could basically speak no English and did not understand 'onion rings'). When we had the BBQ, we mentioned several times (!) that we do NOT want her to put the meat on the grill - that we want to do this on our own. However, she came several times and rearranged/cut our food (and we told her again and again not to do this...). Furthermore, drinks were not refilled. Because of this sad experiences, we did not tip a high amount. Then the waitress came out of the restaurant and mentioned that we "have to tip 15%". Of course we did not. Never seen such an impolite waitress there. Also, we both had some problems after with the stomach after the dinner.
(1)Lisa K.
Fabulous ! Very attentive staff. Food was excellent. Def try the seafood pancake...
(5)Julie V.
Do yourself and your wallet a favor and do NOT come here. The food took ages to get to the table, and the wait staff rarely goes to check up on your table- and this is a Korean restaurant, it is authentic and part of the culture is to only ring when you need something, but I'm Vietnamese and I thought that the wait staff was horrible. The food was cold when it came out, when it FINALLY came out after 1 and 1/2 hours, and it was at best average. My mom bit into her Spicy Tofu/Seafood Soup, and she bit right into a rock! The seafood had not been cleaned! So no, I am not coming back because there are a bunch of better places to go such as Seoul Garden in Ann Arbor and TOMO in Livonia. We ended up having to pay $70 for 3 mediocre dishes, so thanks New Seoul Garden, we aren't ever coming back! As Simon Cowell says on American Idol, "It's going to have to be a no from me."
(1)Artist J.
Delicious food. Plentiful banchan. And the soup is divine. Iced coffee and lemon water to finish. Seriously try the beef bone soup. You won't be disappointed. The staff are very prompt and attentive.
(5)Megan K.
Came here for lunch. My boyfriend said he had been once before but didn't say much about it. I later realized that maybe he didn't have a stellar experience because I've never known him to not speak Korean in a Korean restaurant with the waitstaff. He spoke only English so there was something obviously off. It was also odd that there were two waiters who seemed to switch back and forth serving us. Their menu is pretty diverse and if you're a fan of ddukbokki like myself, they serve it! One of the only Korean places in the Metro area that has it on the menu. Yay! It was also very good, btw. We each got an Asahi. I got dolsot bibimbap and my boyfriend got kimchi pork. My food was really good, the perfect crispiness to the rice and the egg was not a runny mess. The meat was decently portioned and was very flavorful. I kind of wished I would have also gotten the kimchi pork though because it was so delicious. Totally yummy. So overall the place it kind of kitschy, tacky almost in terms of its East Asian-ness. The music was weird, going from 80's music to Beethoven to Britney Spears. The food was really good and was on the expensive side but the portions were large. The service wasn't poor but was not stellar either. Would I come back? Probably by myself, yeah.
(4)Eryn H.
My favorite kbbq place. Having lived in California for a few years now, I still haven't been to a restaurant with better haemul pajeon (seafood pancake). It's crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. Saeng kalbi is slightly overpriced in my opinion. But the marbling and taste is amazing. Pork belly is also delicious. Japchae isn't my favorite, but still decent. Service is fantastic!
(4)Dayna K.
Had a great night here with a group of 9 for a birthday. We had some appetizers, salads and ate our weight in BBQ meats. So delicious. The bulgogi was amazing. The sides of kimchi, eggplant and radish were very good! Good service. Bill was around $340. Around $68 per couple. Not bad!
(4)Albert K.
This is the best overall Korean restaurant in Michigan and has been since it opened. I am Korean who has lived in and traveled throughout Korea. I have tried all the contenders in town Bibim Bap, Shilla (RIP), Chong Gi Wa, Tofu House, Korean Palace, etc and this place is still the king in my eyes. First off, the Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake) is the the best I have ever had in America or Korea. It is crispy yet fluffy. In most restaurants, you will get a greasy mess. Next, is there Mandoo Guk (dumpling soup)... This is my favorite Korean dish that is not made by my mother and I have made a point of trying it at every restaurant in town and at the famous places in Korea. No one does it better than NSG. The broth is cloudy and deep with flavor and the dumpling have a thin by firm skin with well seasoned meat inside. You are pretty much safe eating anything at this place, save their Soondoobu Jigae (spicy tofu stew) which I find to be too buttery. However, this place does come with its problems. First the service is and has always been atrocious. I try not to go to this place without my parents (they are friendly with the ownership) because if you are Korean and young, it is inevitable that service will be bad. Personally, I think the years of poor services and steep prices have put off the Korean community in the area as I have not seen this place busy in years. I still go to this place at least once a month and will continue to go here until it closes or I die. Suffice it to say in my humble opinion, if you are looking to try Korean food in MI or anywhere else for that matter, you could not do much better than NSG.
(5)Gary A.
I have always liked this place, especially for lunch. They have Korean BBQ, but really it's all things Asians, from sushi to Pad Thai. They specialist in Korean, with gas burers at many of the large booths, but they have a good sized sushi menu too. Their lunch bento box specials are the best value, with miso soup, you get a blend of many tastes, from a small salad to a couple of California roll pieces. The wait staff is young and a little inexperience, I wonder if it's just their lunch crew. It never seems to be overly crowd, but it is a big place, with probably 50+ tables in the main dining room with additional private rooms. So, worth going here for lunch, try the bento box lunch specials.

When my friend said she wanted to come here for lunch yesterday, I was a little concerned because of the reviews. I think the first time I came here with her, I hadn't done my research on yelp prior, so I didn't have any major concerns. Anywho, we came here for lunch around 2:30-ish and right when we walked in, there was no host or waiters in sight. A little awkward...just standing there...anyways, a waiter finally came out of the bathroom and asked if there were only two (no hello or anything). There was a couple that walked in shortly after us and was also asked if there were two in their party. I could tell the couple was confused because the waiter didn't say anything afterwards and grabbed two menus for my friend and I. I wasn't sure either if the waiter was going to seat them at the same time. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, near the fish tank and were brought hot water (barley tea) right away. My friend was a little surprised because when her and her boyfriend visited the restaurant a few weeks ago, they weren't brought the same drink. One of the first things I noticed when we were walking to our table is what other yelpers have stated about tables not being cleared off. I noticed a couple tables that weren't cleaned off, one table being directly behind me and it seemed like it had been there for a couple hours. I thought it was a little odd because our waiters kept checking on us and couldn't understand why they didn't have time to clear off the tables. I was surprised at how attentive the waiters were but we did end up having a late lunch. We both ordered dol-sot-bibimbap (total came out to $28...with just waters), which came out I believe within 5-10 minutes or ordering. I was so excited and starving at that point and began mixed the rice/veggies/meat and egg and of course topped it off with the what's supposed to be spicy dressing. To be honest, I couldn't taste the spiciness of the sauce and I really couldn't tell if it was because of the sauce or the veggies. The veggies in the dish lacked flavor & freshness and was turned off right away when I noticed the mushrooms. Since the mushrooms were hiding under the egg and some veggies, I didn't notice it right away. Bibimbap normally doesn't come with mushrooms and I was very disappointed that the menu didn't specify all the veggies that came with the dish (or else I would've asked without...not to mention, I've never had mushroom in any bibimbap I've had). The veggies didn't seem fresh and I ended up getting a slight tummy ache. I like to believe my stomach can handle just about anything (Mcd's. Taco Bell, White Castle, etc..) so I was surprised my stomach was reacting this way. Not to mention, being Korean, I eat Korean food a good portion of the time. Anyways, overall our service was good, since we had two waiters checking on us frequently but the food is less to be desired for. I was shocked at how expensive almost all of the dishes are. If you're looking for a Korean BBQ restaurant with great flavor, some awesome and plenty side dishes (banchan), head over to BiBimBap in Novi. I'm glad I gave this place another shot, since I did say I would try the B dish in my last post, but I definitely will not be coming back here.

Tried this spot after reading rave reviews. When we arrived, it wasn't busy and do we were seated promptly. I was surprised given that it was a Friday night at dinner time. We got our drinks immediately but it took a while for anyone to take our order. There seemed to be a lot of servers/managers running around --maybe they were busy in the back? The Food: After our orders were in, they brought us out a beef broth soup and spicy salad. The broth was delicious but the salad was bleh. We had seafood pancakes and they are really as good as many have said before, but they're pricey. $16 for an appetizer consisting of flour, greens, and sparse bits of shrimp and calamari? We also had tteokbokki-- it was excellent. Not too spicy but not lifeless either, and the rice cakes had a nice chewy consistency. Again though it was $9 which is a bit high for what it is. Finally we had the Galbi. As others have noted, the portion is small, actually the word tiny comes to mind. I was really surprised at just how small--a fraction of other places. The flavor was average: good but not great. I've had better at several restaurants closer to home. Definitely not worth the $30 price tag. The ban chan was quite good: in particular the radish kimchi was fierce. Service: the servers were nice. The beverage servers were very attentive and kind. We had little interaction with our server and our service was taken over by a manager or owner. But everyone was nice. Two negatives: it took really long for our food to come out despite the fact that they weren't very busy. Second, I think they had an evaporative cooler instead an ac-- which is rough when it's mid-July in Michigan. So it was uncomfortable in there. All in all, some of the food was really good and some of it was just average. I think it's overpriced, the Galbi is outright exorbitant. When I got the check I just felt like we didn't get our money's worth. Given that it's a bit of a trek for us it is unlikely that we'll be back. If the pricing/portion ratio was better, we'd definitely return.

Groupon dinner... Careful walking up to the door, with all the broken and tore up cement! They do have pallets down to alert you however. I dined by myself, and it was not busy.....so where my waiter B??? The service here, not so good...I noticed all the servers were men too....maybe it's one of those cultural things, where women aren't allowed to be servers...who knows...but...they need to do something about that...obviously...almost every Yelp review mentions their shitty service! My food was good... I have nothing really to compare it to though, as it was my first time trying these dishes (Bibimbap, and shamai) - but I really enjoyed them both. They seemed fresh, they were hot, nice and spicy (but not too much), and plentiful. Overall I enjoyed my experience, and would go back if I were in the area.

This place used to be great, after new ownership it is pretty crappy. 1. I understand we are not Korean but please don't act surprise and steer me in another direction when I order something I know I want. My family and I are not new to Korean food, we know what we are ordering. 2. When we do order our food please do not come out with something we did not order thinking it's what we 'ordered'. 3. Stop with the racist foolishness. Ex:Tried to have a party set up there, the owner was trying to get a lady to speak with me and set something up, she refused to speak with me. Its was only after his tone changed on her that she finally sat down and set up something. Throughout the conversation is was one racist comment after another. I get that she may have not known or meant it but why set up restaurant and not expect a variety of customers? Did you expect to only get Korean people going to your place? Ex: Traveled 45mins for a take out order, ordered Jjolmyun and got spaghetti noodles and what smelled to be rotten been sprouts; looked closer and it was rotten bean sprouts, had to throw it away, noodles was one huge chunk of gross and was uneatable. Your services are horrible, the way you treat diff customers are horrible. IF you want to stay open for long please staff and owners change your attitude.

afrer having some trouble being 1st timer visiting Michigan especially with eknowloging there is Canadian border, me & my boss came here for big fat dinner, THE KOREAN BBQ, KALBI. i was 110% amazed the fact that the quality of the meat was more than awesome that haven't had it for long time. it was very fresh and tasteful although taste of their "fountain" sirra mist was very weird. And most of all, their service was relatively OK.

My family has been coming here regularly for over six years, very satisfied with the service/hospitality, food, quality, atmosphere and overall value. ( especially for the grill-at-table Kalbi ). But, since the place changed management in late 2013, they have definitely lost much of their appeal. We are no longer recognized by any of the staff who has completely turned over since the transition, and we've noticed a decrease in value. Last night was the last straw for us...the prices increased ~17 to 20%, the portion sizes decreased and the quality of meats decreased. We also had to explicitly ask for items that had always been included by default with the meal (soup, salad) and even had to request for refills of hot tea. The side salad items accompanying the Kalbi were served with smaller variety and much smaller portion. No offer was made to refill these items when we quickly finished them... Their premium Kalbi , we usually get it and the quality always justified the premium price, last night was a huge disappointment and poor value. Top that off with beer glasses served with food/oil residues .... We're DONE with this place, the end of an era for us. We had wondered why their parking lot was so empty lately and now we know.

New Seoul Garden - what have you done?? This is a place that I have loved coming to for several years, and saved a visit for my birthday this last weekend. We have had many nice meals here in the past, so I was really looking forward to introducing my friend and her husband to my love of Korean food. My husband and I ordered the BBQ - what have you done to change it. The marinade on the meat was bland. I will say that the meat was tender, chicken was good, shrimp also - the the sauce was so boring. My friend enjoyed her noodle bibimbap, her husband enjoyed the scallops, but that didn't make up for a mediocre experience with the BBQ. The side dishes were lacking - and all were spicy. What happened to the variety of them? Alas, I will not be returning in to this Korean restaurant. I will have to look further for a great Korean experience.

Usually hit this place up for lunch a couple times a year. They've got a huge (I mean huge) menu broken down into Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, and sushi offerings. Usually spring for the same things every time: either the Pho style soup with necessary accompaniments or the spicy squid and vegetable sautee. Both are great depending on what type of mood you're in. Service is usually good, decor is dated (that's being nice) but really, what good Vietnamese or Korean restaurant out there has a modern decor....it's part of the charm. Overall, a solid place to grab lunch.
(3)David B.
I used to go to this place on a somewhat regular basis a couple years ago, but something happened and the quality of the food and service took a nosedive. I've pretty much stopped going here altogether because they can't seem to get orders right and certain things are just "off". If you're looking for a good Korean place, I'd recommend going out to Tofu House in Farmington instead.

yummy, yummy, yummy so cheap too. i got a pork hot pot for dinner for 10.95. it was really lovingly spiced and had so many fun little bites to eat along with it. kimchi, seaweed, pickled things. all very good. the best part of the dish was the way the pot made the bottom of the rice nice and crunchy. once i figured that out, i let my rice stick to the bottom longer and get crunchy. my glass of plum wine was the perfect friend for my meal. i will definitely return for some bbq soon. so happy that this restaurant i thought was some cheesy chinese place turned out to be so good. they also offer japanese food. love, juston

Food 4 stars - Service 4 stars Authentic Korean food, authentic Korean interior, no American gadgets - PERFECT! Very friendly waiters and they don't want to talk your ear off like in an American restsurant - NICE! ...and Kids are more than welcome. Close your eyes and enjoy the food. You really think you're not in the US. A full recommendation from my side if you want to enjoy Korean and Japanese food. You can get side orders as much as you want.

This is the second time Yelp reviewers steered me wrong. I'm on business trip so I often dine alone. When I was being seated, I passed by a few open booths. I asked if I could be seated in one and I was turned down because party of 1 can't sit at a booth. Okayyyyy... Strike one. The waitress who took my order could careless about serving me. She asked me what I wanted and I ordered the short ribs Kalbi. She apbruptly grab the menu and walked away. I stopped her to order my drink. Strike two. So now I wait. I waited... and waited... and waited. The table who was seated after me, got their food before me. Really? Strike three. Part of me wanted to get up and walk out but I didn't. Finally my food arrives. Now, I ordered the short ribs Kalbi, so naturally I would expect them to have bones on them like how I've always gotten them at other Korean's restaurants. Nope. No bones. It looked like strips of ribeye steaks and was poorly marinated. The side condiments were mediocre. I noticed the conventional Kimchee was missing. I asked for them and they told me it was not ready. How do you not have Kimchee? Foul ball. Overall, it under delivers. I've had so much better and for the price, the portion does not justify. There were fans everywhere and the owner was moving them around throughout the restaurant to blow the smoke plume from cooking table top. I guess the venting system is not working. Service sucked. Nobody checked on me. I had to ask for refills and my check. I'm never coming back.

Boring, bland, and overpriced, this 90's-era monstrosity is like the Korean version of Applebees. The menu is very big and offers some Japanese dishes as well, but I've never had anything particularly good from any part of the menu. I feel like if a Korean restaurant can't make a good bibimbab, it isn't worth your time. Two stars for a nice little array of banchan on the table.
(2)Yuanjing P.
I went there once 2 years ago and remember their food being very good. This Wednesday we went back for dinner with a Groupon and the overall experience was pretty good. We first ordered seafood pancake. I noticed it raised to $15 now but it's still yummy and quite filling. Hubby ordered BiBimBap, I ordered Doenjang-Chigae. We both enjoyed our food. Our waitress is a really sweet young girl, we were always treated with a smile.

This restaurant is a Japanese and Korean fusion spot offering authentic Bulgogi and Korean dishes. Upon entering my friends noticed several tables with Korean national families enjoying the same foods we were eating ourselves, so it absolutely reflects what you'd get in downtown Seoul. The foods are fresh and inspired and offer enough variety to encourage frequent visits. The restaurant seems to be modernizing with efforts to fix the broken concrete at the front of the restaurant. I also noticed that the interior of the restaurant, while clean, is also a bit dated and could use a refresh.
(4)Vickie R.
Disclaimer: their website sucks, but it's not a reflection on how the restaurant is at all. The restaurant is huge, nicely decorated, and it was so packed, the only way we could get seated right away was if we eat in the room where you have to take your shoes off, sit at a really low to the ground table, and therefore sitting on giant floor cushions instead of normal chairs or booths. It's definitely a lot easier to do for someone short, like myself. The menu is impressive. Price per entree is pretty comparable to other Korean/Japanese restaurants. My bf and I went there for the Korean bbq, and it did not disappoint. For $23.95, you get a soup, an appetizer, side dishes, 4 types of meats for grilling (short ribs, beef slices, chicken breasts, and shrimps of a respectable size), and an ice cream. There is a two order minimum, which may sound like a rip off, but honestly, how many people go get Korean bbq solo? The portions are just right, any more food and I'd be stuffed, any less and I'd be hungry. My only complaint is that I wish the staff would let us cook our own meats if we choose to, as that's part of the experience. Aside from that, I was pleased with the food, the service, and the atmosphere, and I look forward to going back.

I wish I could give this place a negative 5!!! It's under new ownership and the service is just out right horrible!!!! We were a party of 9 and they managed to mess up 5 out of the 9 orders and not to mention they never came to check on us to see if we needed water. Then when the bill came that was another disaster they forgot to bring out dishes but didn't forget to charge us for them and when we brought it to there attention they get mad? Never again will I ever come here

TERRIBLE dining experience! How terrible you may ask? Bad enough that i ended up at the local police station! : / Let me start at the beginning...I came to New Seoul Garden looking to try authentic Korean food. After all, the restaurant received rave reviews here on Yelp, so i figured i'd give it a go. Upon walking into the place, i wasn't so sure. With only two occupied tables and a stale 90's decor (reminiscent of the Golden Girls set), didn't leave me with the most reassuring feeling. Anyways, i went ahead and ordered a few appetizers: a bowl of MISO SOUP, an UNAGI ROLL, and a KIMCHI variety platter. All were good, but the disappointment came with the arrival of the entree: OHJING-O-BOKEUM (stir-fried squid and vegetables with spicy sauce). The squid was cooked into a rubbery eraser finish, making 95% of the dish inedible. On the bright side, i managed to find 3 edible pieces of squid which were actually quite tasty! When i was just about done with my meal, i felt scalding hot water poured on me. WTF?!?! One of the waiters (the guy looked about 60yrs old) decided to throw a mug of hot water at another waiter, who happened to duck, and the hot water landed on me - BURNING the right side of my torso!!! I was sooo appalled, physically hurting, and in overall shock as to what transpired that i got up and went straight to the manager. Soon enough i see 60yr old waiter dude running up to me apologizing, which i can appreciate BUT "what the hell is your grown ass doing throwing boiling hot water from the coffeemaker, WHILE there are PAYING customers around!!!" All in all, I have NO INTENTION of EVER going back to New Seoul Garden!

I go here maybe on average once a month or so and if my last experience had not been so jarring, I would have given them 4 stars. But this past time I went with one friend who had never had Korean food and we ordered an order of bulgogi, and an order of galbi. When they brought the food, I asked for brown rice, which most restaurants that I've been to have at hand in the kitchen. The server told me it would be 3-4 minutes but the reality was it took over 30 minutes and we were almost done with our food by the time I got it. The server did apologize and so did another server that I had asked who was around our table at some point, but it really... argh! And if I had planned to never be back to this restaurant, I would have barely tipped them. But since it is owned by someone who attends my church, although I don't know them personally, (this is to say while my reviews are usually biased, as in skewed to what I think, they are not skewed by my potential relationship to the establishment at all! Seriously, their food is decent despite the unfortunate service the last time I went) and the fact that it is one of the few Korean restaurants around, I know that I will be back... So I reluctantly tipped. Less than normal. Oh right. The reason I tipped even less. My friend and I gave our credit cards and the server, for whatever reason (they were not that busy... well maybe they were but the restaurant was not even half full) put the entire bill on my friend's credit card. I gave him a slight 'scolding' in Korean but it just irked me... The one thing that saved the meal was that I asked if they don't usually give 'pa-che' which is the thinly sliced scallions and soy sauce...based sauce that comes with bbq in many Korean restaurants. And the server (a different server) went to find out and brought us some, informing us at the same time that they do not usually provide it. So this redeeming factor gave me some reason to tip them a bit. Maybe some people are like WHAT IS IT WITH THIS GIRL AND TIPPING? So-RRY! I didn't grow up in a country with tipping as its culture so despite having been in the states for a few years, it's still slightly unnatural for moi. Overall, the food is generally decent. You almost never have to wait. And I hope that in the next few months, I can update my review and give them more stars.

Good Korean in Michigan?! I am surprised! The place is big, clean, and has the feel of a Korean restaurant. The staff is pretty nice. The food is good and they serve complementary soup and banchan included. Some of the banchan looks weird, like the fried chicken with sauce drizzled on top. Never seen that in my life. The tofu and the bean sprouts were probably my favorite. I had the sushi here before too. Pretty good better than some of the places in Ferndale. I would definitely come back! Clean bathrooms. Couple stalls in the women and plenty of parking.

Black people beware. Do Not Waste your time and MONEY. They are dirty nasty and Prejudice. Nats were flying around our food. The owner was barking at us like he was barking at dogs. (For Real) He went to the side to do it where we could not see him. They acted as if they had a problem bringing us extra side dishes, but were taking other customer side dishes with no problem. Also their prices have went up sky high. They brought out the wrong food There are a lot of other Korean Japanese restaurants that serve way better faster food @ an affordable prices with un racist attitudes. It was not an enjoyable experience for the money spent at all. I appreciate yelp and all other places who do reviews because in my younger years I used to be so afraid to speak up and speak out on racial barriers But now I call IT like I C ...it

Lunch special alert: $9 for Ome Rice, a giant omelette stuffed with beef, chicken, shrimp or veggie fried rice, complete with soup and 4 Korean veggie sides! The host also offered my toddler a little cup of fish food to feed the hungry koi in the lobby pond.
(5)Rob P.
not a big fan of sushi but had to take a break from all the American food overdose. I liked the California sushi roll. My colleague had the BBQ which you do by yourself on the grill in the center of the table. It looked like it was fun to do so. The drinking water they gave tasted so odd and the water looked like it was not clean because i saw these tiny particles consistent in the cup, The interiors were nice but there was a slight stink everywhere! The prices are high for the quality standards they have. Definitely not a big fan of the food here nor their service!
(3)Helen L.
Yea...no this place ain't the same like the one in Ann Arbor. I have a tendency to get full with few bite of food when it's not good, and that is what happen. Good service, but I just don't like the food. Either it's too much msg, or it taste too sweet. I wouldn't come here again. Oh, and i had a hard time finding this place because google map said it was in the middle of highway...If you're trying to find this place, it's in the complex of Meijer's. Look for the Toysrus store.
(2)Ed S.
If you are looking for a place where you can get traditional Korean, Japanese and sushi this is the place for you. I will admit the Japanese/sushi dishes are average to above average but the Korean menu is out of this world. I highly recommend the Mandu soup, Kimchee and Bulgogi.
(4)Giggly C.
My favorite Korean restaurant of all time. I love the special bi-bim neugmeun. It's heavenly. don't go here for sushi~ its the korean food you must try here. It's excellent. I had my rehearsal dinner here~ they have affordable prices, great buffet options, a private room in the back, great ambiance. My friend had their baby's first birthday party here, and again, the food and service was excellent. I've eaten here over 30 times in over 10 years when I go back home to see my parents and it's consistently a wonderful, delicious place.

Shiny new menus, smaller portions, higher prices, and ridiculous 6-inch long ties. I miss the old New Seoul Garden. This was my favorite restaurant for years. I used to eat here on an almost weekly basis between 2007 and 2011. The prices were high because, sadly, Korean food is just an expensive cuisine in the US, but I was willing to pay them and was always super satisfied. Some time in late 2012, most of the original servers seemed to disappear. There were a couple of middle-aged men who were awesome servers who were very friendly and personable. Gone. They brought in these little teeny bopper waiters who were, I'd guess, in their late teens and early twenties, and the majority of them seemed fresh from Korea (they all had accents and some of them could barely understand English). The majority of them are also very obviously not happy being waiters, and it comes through very plainly, across the language barrier. I seem to recall that, around the time that Gangnam Style first came out, the waiters started all wearing these ridiculous ties that were seriously like 6 to 9 inches long. They look completely ridiculous. I can only ascertain that perhaps they were thinking that a full-length tie might hang down into people's plates, or catch on fire when leaning over the bbq grills. Well, guess what? We have these things called BOW TIES that make you look like slightly less of a tart than what looks like a tie, intended for a toddler, being worn by an adult male. You also could just NOT wear a tie... At the same time as all my favorite wait staff disappeared and the teeny boppers with the toddler ties who barely understood English took their places, the menu got revamped. It's now heavily laminated pastel-colored pages that lack the majority of the Korenglish that my friends and I used to enjoy laughing at. There are some new items, but the worst part is that the prices have been hiked up on almost everything, and some staple Korean items are just no longer available. Not only have the prices been hiked up, but the portions have been decreased! They also Americanized one of their barbecues by trimming the fat off!!! What?!! They said 'it looks cleaner that way'. Seriously? Half of what makes Korean barbecue delicious is that they use fatty cuts of meat that are full of flavor BECAUSE of the fat! 'Clean'? Come ON! They have been stingier with portions than ever before. They will try to find ways to not bring everyone at your table a bowl of rice, and it's very obvious. The side dishes are fewer in number than they've ever been; in the past, they would give you at least 7 or 8 - now, you're lucky if you get more than 5. The meat portions are smaller, yet even more expensive than when they gave you more. They also give much less side sauces, from the soy-based ones to ssamjang (the orange miso paste). Nowadays, I am more inclined to go to Korea Palace. They're cheaper, higher quality, and have much better staff. New Seoul Garden - your new management needs to get a clue.

I took a group of four visiting Korean business executives from Seoul to New Seoul Garden for a final lunch after their week of business travel in Metro Detroit. We all found the food to be quite delicious and the service was attentive and prompt. Perhaps you could chalk the following comment up to my Korean colleagues being hungry for Korean food after 8 days of American meals, "Korean food in the U.S. is good, but sometimes even better than in Seoul." However I've had my share of Korean food in the U.S. and I thought it was quite good as well. The Korean pancakes that come to your table on a sizzling platter were delicious, as was my beef bibimbap bowl.

Went on a Friday night, service was slow, food was "okay" and I had to ask for my soup 3 times. Maybe they were short handed so ill give them the benefit of the doubt. I got some chicken/fish/squid meal in a pot with noodles and it basically tasted like something out of a Kroger "heat & eat" meal. He had the taryaki salmon and wasn't enthused. Maybe it just wasn't our thing but I won't be going back or recommending it to anyone.

Went to NSG for lunch today. It was pretty dead. We sat in the bar to watch some of the NCAA games and were the only patrons there. The service was very slow and the food was decent but pretty expensive for lunch. I ordered two rolls which were very small. They had good flavor but were too small to justify the pricing. We also could not get our waiter to return to get the check and had to walk up and find the host to pay. I might return to try their Korean food, but I wouldn't hurry back.

During a lunch outing with co-workers we decided to try New Seoul Garden. It was a Friday, and for those observing Lent we wanted a place that served sushi. It just so happens that this is the closest option for sushi near the office, never-mind that its a Korean restaurant. Several people got various sushi rolls, I got the bulgogi lunch box, another got the spicy pork Korean BBQ lunch, and yet another opted for the chicken teriyaki. The sushi rolls looked good, but some of them were enormous! We got a shrimp tempura roll and a spider roll, and the size of the shrimp alone was outstanding, and then they tried to squeeze it into a roll - well you were not able to eat in one bite. My bulgogi lunch box was interesting. The bulgogi was tasty, it wasn't too fatty and it was seasoned well. It came with the standard Korean sides as well as miso soup, rice, California roll, a chicken nugget, shrimp shu mai, some type of fritter and a chicken wing. The shu mai and the fritter thing were actually delicious! Ok, it was a little weird getting a chicken nugget and chicken wing in my lunch box at the Korean/Japanese restaurant. It was a lot of food for about $10 and most of it was good, but I don't thing I would get the lunch box again . . . . I did try the spicy pork BBQ and it was really great! I think if I were to go back this is what I would get. It was not too spicy, the heat slowly builds. The other co-worker, who doesn't really eat much more than bread and cheese, got the chicken teriyaki. It was not great, a large piece of chicken smothered in teriyaki sauce. The chicken didn't even seem grilled. The lesson is, when you go to a restaurant, order the right food. In a Korean restaurant, I cant expect the Japanese items to be outstanding. However - restaurants should stop serving food that they aren't going to make "right". That was a sorry excuse for teriyaki. What was good was the Korean BBQ. While the bbq'ed meat was seasoned well, the sides fell a little flat for me. The sushi is an ok option here, it seemed fresh, just try to choose the smaller rolls. In a death match between New Seoul Garden and Shilla . . . .this match goes to Shilla.

DINER'S BEWARE! Have you ever left a restaurant angry? Well, I hadn't....until I left New Seoul Garden the other night. It was absolutely the worst dining experience of my life, mostly due to the absolutely TERRIBLE service we received. Not only was our waiter rude and smug, but he refused to make eye contact. And he forgot our appetizer. And he never came back once after our marginal food came. I actually had to go to the front counter to get someone to bring me our check. Now this may have been forgivable if the place was really busy, or even if he forgot and was apologetic, but I would often catch glimpses of this clown lounging by the kitchen, sipping on his water.....while mine sat on the table empty. I'll admit, this is the first time in my life that I've ever under-tipped someone (less than 20%), and several hours later, I regret tipping the kid at all. I think I'm still actually angry! Anyways, the food did very little, if anything to make up for the abysmal service. My Bibimbap was bland (at least compared to the stuff I became addicted to in Chicago) and my girlfriends chicken dish was literally like rubber. Not to mention a couple pesky fruit flies that were circling our food most of the time....blah! I guess I'll be looking to get my Bibimbap fix when I'm on the road, I suggest you all do the same!

New Seoul Garden is a hidden gem in Southfield. If you're cruising along the freeway, chances are you won't even notice that the restaurant is sitting there. Lucky for my partner in crime and I, we noticed this place on Christmas Day when we almost resorted to going to Denny's for dinner since that and IHOP were the only other places that were open. I am a HUGE korean bbq fan. This place did not disappoint. If you don't sit at one of the tables with your own grill, the waiter will cook your food on a tabletop grill at your table. We've gone a couple times, and we always order the chicken with extra spicy sauce. It's flavorful and delicious. I also love the side dishes. I am a self-proclaimed kim chee worshipper, so I have seconds and thirds. They also have a really good fish cake and tofu as well. Now there's a groupon up for this place! I'd highly recommend getting it and trying this place out.

Please note that we aren't huge Korean food eaters. I feel like there aren't that many around and it's not something we actively seek out. That being said I really didn't understand what most of the items on the menu were. So we went with the Korean BBQ combo because they had the grills in the tables so it seems that it's something the specialize in. It was an excellent decision! Despite it being kind of awkward because the waiter stands at your table and cooks your meat for you while you sit there and watch. But the marinated beef was amazing. I have no idea what they use for marinade but it was probably the best beef I've ever had. It's kind of pricey but you definitely get your fill, at least with the BBQ combo (last page of the menu). Service was slow but I don't think they were being rude I think they're just laid back and don't want to rush you.

Today was just a gloomy day with the rain and traffic. Not an eventful day. So I decided to cheer myself up with food from my motherland. Went to this restaurant at 7:30 pm alone again. When I walked in the wait staff had this very confused look when I told them I needed a table for one. Very strange. I ordered Korean Bacon, felt like getting a heart attack. You usually can't get wrong with a good Korean Bacon BBQ style. My heart sank when the food arrived, the portion was so small my 10 year old nephew would still be hungry after eating this, never mine me. I am after all a big guy. The side dishes were just okay. Detroit could really use a good Korean restaurant. The staff were nice enough but I believe they could use some training. Korean Beacon: $15.95 Coke: $ 2.00 Total with tip: $24.05 I gave three stars for the staff and okay food.

I will never go back here again. First of all, absolutely no one spoke English. We couldn't understand our waitress so another waiter came over; same thing. Then someone who appeared to be manager came over; still no English. We ordered and a few of the waitstaff just stood there off to the side and watched us eat. We felt very uncomfortable.

My favorite waiter brings out the food he thinks I'll like so I can try something different each time. Never had a bad experience and the food is always great. They have an extensive menu.
