Fantastic place for REAL Thai food. (Not Chinese dressed-up as Thai.) Either dine early or late, for lunch, as the place is small.

I love love love this place, I always get a carry out. The food is always ready and hot! My husband and I always split the chicken fried rice, it's a huge portion. I love how largely chopped the veggies are in the rice. It's so flavorful. I also love their drunken noodles made with rice instead if noodles. I've tried a lot on the menu (which can sometimes be confusing to look at with all the numbers and letters) and I have never been disappointed... you won't be either!

The vibe was strangely random. The clientele was all men (we were the only females during the entire hour we were there), roughly the same age and dressed from the same store. It's safe to assume they probably crawled out of the same cubicle. When we got there we were the only ones at the restaurant and were immediately seated. The service was phenomenal. Lots of smiles and answering questions for my vegetarian friend. When the food came it was OK. I am from Northern California and the Bay Area is filled with amazing Thai. This was good, but definitely not great. In fact, I am not sure what the fuss is about. Northwestern is BIG. This is the place you'd spend half of your lunch hour waiting to just get seated? When we got down with our lunch we were still hoping to finish our drinks and continue catching up. Yes, it was about 12:10. There were about 10 people (all men) waiting to get seated. I was the one facing the door so I couldn't shake that they must be cursing me under their breath for keeping them away from their cubicles and Thai food. I asked my friend to go chat in the car so that we can empty up some space. It was THAT uncomfortable. Had I read Valerie's review about eating and getting the hell out as soon as we were done I would have chosen a different location for catching up. I didn't rely on you entirely, Yelp, and for that I am sorry. Lastly, the Subway next door is Zagat rated. Just food for thought.

Been going to Café Thai past 8 years. The food quality is top notch and consistent.

Jeffrey B. and I ventured out here the other day because he had a coupon from his mother's entertainment book for buy one get one free entrees. We made the trek over to the great Northwestern Highway. We're always in search of amazing Thai food and this was not too far of a journey for us. The place is small and is located in a strip mall on Northwestern Highway. The inside is bright and clean. There are probably 6-8 tables inside and at dinner almost every one was occupied. The menu seemed to be pretty standard and was actually very similar to Thai Café in Royal Oak. First, we were given complementary soup. It was some chicken rice soup that tasted like miso soup. It was decent and I like that it was free. Then I had a spring roll which seemed to be hand made and was very fresh and very delicious. I really enjoyed it. For the entrée I had Pad Se'ew with chicken. It was very delicious and had a lot of flavor, fresh broccoli and a nice noodles. The spiciness was a little different. They have more of a gradient when you can choose, no spice, mild, mild plus, medium, medium plus, hot and all the way up to triple hot or something ridiculous. Well, I chose the mild plus and I didn't think it was very spicy. I didn't notice any burning or need any extra water. I would definitely try medium the next time. The best feature was the service. The waitress was so nice and so attentive. She was very friendly and even down-right cheerful! It was a pleasure to eat here and I will definitely return.

Stopped in for lunch and their prices are very reasonable - $6.50 for each main dish. Got some soup with rice in it served as part of the lunch - nothing real interesting about it. I ordered the gang keaw warn. More oil was in it than I prefer and not a whole lot of coconut milk. Serving size was a little on the small side. Service was very good and friendly.

Café Thai, Best Thai in Detroit I have had..beats Sala Thai in Detroit too. Why do I like it? The heat is heat, but not too much, you can order how hot you want it. But you can still taste the food. No alcohol served. Food is cheap and delicious. Look for coupons. They are around, you can be out of there for a group of four for under $30. And leave happy and full. And spend two hours there talking and chilling, yes it is that kinda place. Small, but it works. You get quality for a good price. Their noodle dishes are insane. Drunken Noodle, and there is a Curry Noodle..with Coconut and shrimp..this a legit place. Those shrimps are good and there is a bounty of them in the dish (not soggy and not one or two in it like most thai places around here). We drive all the way up and will continue to for this place. No frills, it is about the food.

Excellent food that arrives very quickly. There were a ton of vegetables in my tasty curry. Be careful, their medium spice is more like medium-plus or hot! Your meal comes with free soup but there was chicken in it. The dining room seats 20 people max so be prepared to rub elbows at lunchtime. I just overheard the waitress explaining Thai food to some newbies and she did an amazing job! She also said they make their own lemonade so I will try that next time.

While Bangkok Hung down the street is the Thai restaurant of choice for most of my coworkers, I prefer Cafe Thai. It's cleaner, newer, has superior plate presentation and the best spring rolls I've ever had. If you want to come here for lunch, you probably need to get here at like 11. There are only a handful of tables and they fill up fast! I suggest you grab a table, just get water to drink - order whatever your favorite Thai dish is (It will be just as good here as you've had anywhere else), but perhaps a smidge hotter than you usually do (I don't find their spice levels to be as high as some other places) and a springroll. Enjoy the spring roll along with your complimentary soup. Smile when your food comes looking all delciouslike. Scarf it down and Get the Hell out of there! Someone else is waiting for your table!!!! :) Just a note: You can usually find coupons for this place, including a 10% off coupon on cafethai.net .

I eat here almost weekly at lunch. It's a small place but I have never had to wait long, even at noon. You can't go wrong with food here, I usually get Pad Se'ew which is delicious but everything I've tried has been excellent. The spice levels are pretty accurate and they will let you substitute ingredients. Price-wise I think they are reasonable and you get a little chicken/rice soup with your meal.

I go here nearly every week with my children since we have business nearby. The food is very delicious and very moderately priced! There has been one time when my food was not up to par (may have been a new/different cook) and once when the spice was actually too hot for me. I LOVE spice, but on this occasion it was really over the top. The waitress told me it was from the regular supplier and usual brand, but it is from a chili pepper after all and that was out of their control (understandable). I usually get the fresh roll and any of their delicious soups. (the soup that comes standard with an entree does not compare to the additional menu options). My children usually split one of the entrees that come with brown sauce since the curries are too spicy. There's often food left over for them. I brought my brother a take out once and have bumped into him several times since. Would definitely recommend trying to anyone who enjoys Thai, curry, and great prices.

Tried Cafe Thai yesterday, because they're near my job and I didn't have time to run to my favorite place. Overall, A-Ok is about right! I tried the pad pak dish with chicken. I found the vegetables to be fresh and delish, the chicken to be minimal and the rice to be plenty! The flavor of the sauce was ok, but didn't have the depth of flavor I'm used to. For around $6 not too bad for lunch and I will probably go back to try something else since my co-worker is a fan.....

The best Thai food ever! Always nice and friendly. Always fresh! Only warning is the place is very small so there can be a wait during rush times such as lunch.

ok wth is everyone taking about?! This place is disturbing! We ordered carry out because my sister and I were horrified and how small the place was. It only seated 18 ppl! The food is just plain old gross. Yes it was our first time.....and this is what we ordered!..... Cho cho plaa~ just stay away Princess shrimp~the shrimp was good and clean but overall had zero taste Patsi ew!~ it was ew! It was dry. Oh was it dry. The veggies were freshly cut but from a day before prob and out cho cho plaa was def from either a few days ago or just reheated in the microwave! And it only took 7 min to get out food! What does that tell you? Ill stick to siam spicy thank you. I just want to know....how anyone thought this place was good?! And when a thai worker comes back with subway....what does that tell u? Hmmmm....yeah I won't be back sorry! I feel bad but they need to step up their game! They aren't serving 50 customers at a time.....we just wanted good carry out after a long day at work! Sorry!

I wish one of the Thai joints in Livonia was this good. Overall the food here has a vibrancy that is sorely lacking in a lot of Thai places. The flavors have that extra dimension that satisfies the urge to eat interesting food. Also the spice levels here are great. Getting things hot doesn't just mean one note drowning in a pile of crushed red pepper hackery. It's hot for sure but with depth and complexity that make the hot food delicious and not an exercise in masochism. My favorite is the beef with Kaffir lime leaves. This is a dish not on most menus around here. The basil and onion and lime leaves weave together to form a great and satisfying flavor. It's not anything like curry type dishes. It almost has an Italian Mediterranean kind of vibe going on. If you get this hot it is really really hot but that manic cracked out kind of hot that the flavor keeps coming through with the heat more and more with each bite. The curry fried rice is also excellent and a great way to slay your sweet and spicy cravings all in one dish. Spring rolls are very good as well. The only thing I didn't really like so far was the thom kah soup. It was really watery and basically only tasted like coconut. It did have a good subtle taste to it and this taste seems like a conscious choice on their part. But I like my thom kah with a lot more bite than the way they serve it I'm a lot closer to other Thai places but I find my way here more often even though it takes more effort because it's worth it.

Yes the food is still spot on. Can't argue with that, not ever. However the service has been slacking as of late. I am now a regular sit down patron and I still get take out when I'm rushing. I'd say I visit at least once a week (it's addictive). There were a couple weeks though I must have skipped my weekly trip because they up and switched waitstaff on me! I don't know what it is about this new staff (mainly a newer server) but maybe it's me. Maybe she's tired of seeing me show up and spend my hard earned money at her establishment. Who knows. All the more reason for me not to eat my food there, all the reason for me to not have to leave a tip. Don't be fooled I will still get my weekly order, but I'll happily skip all the way home and eat it at my own table. I'm not mad at the cooks, they do their job and do it well. My biggest qualm: stopping by at 9:45pm. Sign says they close at 10. Doors unlocked. Walked in. "We're closed." Cafe Thai FAIL.

Even though we were a bit surprised at how small this place was - good choice of Cafe in the name - we still went ahead with a family birthday dinner. The Chicken and Rice soup that came with the meal was super fantastic...but the rest of the food was good but not out of this world. Portions are healthy, flavors are strong in a good way and our service was great.

I had lunch at Cafe Thai today for the second time and confirmed my initial thought that this is a great place. It's in the center of a little strip mall at Franklin and Northwestern Hwy. Make a mental note of the sign though (see photo), so you know what you're looking for, because it was a little hard to read from the road and I ended up passing it. It's a tiny place, probably only seats about 12 people, so it fills up quickly at lunch and has been full both times that I've gone. The service has been top notch each time, with lots of smiles and cheeriness and with the "Bye ladies! Have a good day!" as we're walking out. I've had both the Gang Keaw Warn and the Curry Noodle and loved them both. I tried a bite of my Mom's Curry Fried Rice and it was super tasty as well. I'd say they're on the spicy side, since I've ordered medium both times and it was almost too hot for me and I've easily eaten medium-plus elsewhere. Everything is very fresh and the curry is far more interesting than most places, in my opinion. The portions aren't huge, but it's plenty, and you get free soup, a chicken/rice/pepper loveliness. I can't wait to go back and check out more of their menu. I'm not typically down with "brown sauce" dishes, but I might give them a shot here to see if they can change my mind about them.

A big fan of Thai food. Always get the same dish for dine in or take out here for the last few years. I asked for extra sauce today, server said she would make sure it's not dry. When I went to pay my bill, I was charged a $1 for extra sauce! WOW! I've never been charged before either...SMH. I told the cashier that I eat here 3-4 times a week (3 days in a row this week alone) and she said "I know". I asked if it can be taken off since I was not told it was extra. She said "NO, I have to charge you". I replied "This would be my last time here then" she shrugged her shoulders acted she didn't care and took my money. I guess my $9 a day I spend at this establishment does not mean anything to them.

The quantity of food was good as per the price. The flavours were pretty average. I liked the framed artwork depicting elephants. I was disappointed with the hygiene levels - the spoons and glasses were unclean.

Stopped in town while on business and read the reviews so I thought I'd give Cafe Thai a try. Dined in for a bowl of Tom Yom chicken, served super temperature hot with mediocre flavor. Enjoyed a salty Drunken Noodles dish and ordered a Pad Thai to go. The Pad Thai was like nothing I've had before and nothing I want again. It was scored with lemon and some type of bland flat noodles surrounded be bits of chicken and smothered in bean sprouts. Should have stuck with my original order and sung by Subway for dinner.

Except for the waiting at lunchtime on weekdays, I really like this place. I've tried all the Fried rice varieties and all of them are delicious. This is the best Thai place I've been to.

My family and I got takeout from this restaurant while visiting the area from out of town. We wanted something easy we could bring back to our hotel room for dinner. We had initially hoped to eat out at another restaurant nearby, but we're unable to get a table due to a very long wait time. Disappointed, I felt as if I was "settling" for some Thai takeout. How wrong I was! I've been dreaming of the food here ever since we got home...wishing there was something even somewhat as good as this where I live! We tried two different kinds of fried rice - the Kow Pad Prik, which was a simple fried rice with snow peas and broccoli, and the Kow Pad, which had carrots, onions and peas. Both had dark, deeply flavored rice...which tasted like no other fried rice I'd had before. Personally, I loved the Pad Prik version for its simplicity, making it a great choice for kids because there aren't mystery vegetables to pick out! The vegetables were also cooked perfectly. I love when veggies are still bright and colorful, with a slight crunch (ie. not overcooked!). We also got the Pad Thai and the Drunken Noodle (my usual Thai restaurant favorite) and both were equally delicious and unusual when compared to what I'm used to. So fresh, and obviously prepared with attention to detail. The wait time was minimal and the prices were great. A gem of a restaurant if you're lucky enough to live nearby! I highly recommend a visit to Cafe Thai!

Love the food here. Dinner take out usually last me 2 days. My favorites are the curry noodle and the shrimp and scallop curry. I eat there all the time, I think I'm going there sometime soon. Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Small joint but excellent food. The crab cheese is awesome as well.

I get pad thai at every single Thai restaurant I come across... And so far out of the dozen or so Thai places I've ordered from... This is by far the best. Order it hot? It's actually hot!!!!! Perfect portion size to cost ratio. Just fantastic, sad that I live 6 hours away or I'd order here once a week!

Kind of an oddly located establishment but worth the look. Work fairly close to here so head here quite frequently. Thai food is good nothing spectacular have had 15+ various dishes all are good. Lunch time rush is serious order early and pick up tad later than advised. Pad Thai here is unique in its yellow color, very good though. 10% off coupon is available via online menu.

Had them a few times. Not bad. The best place in the area. Just wanna know how the get the pad Thai so brilliantly yellow. Tried many of their dishes. Never really was dissatisfied. A good option.

Cafe Thai is pretty close to my office & so i have eaten here a few times, it does get busy at lunch time & the space is limited. I have eaten a number of dishes on the menu, generally i find the soup that comes with the lunch special to be weak. The main courses are hit & miss. The vegetables are consistenly good but i really dont like any of the noodle dishes. The Pad See Ew is much too sweet for my taste & any of the Red Green or Yellow curries i have eaten are too mild. If you work on NW Highway then certainly Cafe Thai is a better choice than most others but if you want to try Thai cuisine at its best you can find other options not too far away.

They are awesome!! Staff is always soooooo friendly and professional. They use to deliver to my work place because we placed HUGE orders a couple times a week. I have had almost everything on the menu and no complaints at all, everything taste wonderful. My favorite dish is their curry dishes, so addictive. Small for dine in, complimentary soup that comes with your meal is very tasty.

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Michigan. I used to work across the street and was delighted when a Thai place opened up that I could order lunch from. The owner and her husband used to cook and serve but now they have additional wait staff and an equally awesome chef. One special thing about the owner is that even when I switched jobs and hadn't been there in a year or so, she still remembered my name. They don't deliver, but they do participate in a food taxi type delivery service. I've sampled pretty much everything on the menu but my personal favorites are the Beef Drunken Noodle and the Chicken Pad Thai. They have the best vegetable spring rolls of any Thai restaurant I've had in Michigan. The atmosphere is very nice, authentic Thai colors and beautiful wall paper and adornments greet you. The dining room is very small with probably about 8 tables, but the service is personal and attentive. The only problem is that in the winter time, since they do most of the business with take out, someone is constantly opening the door and freezing you. If you go during lunch time some days it may be crowded or you'll have to wait for a table. They used to serve shrimp chips at the table with your standard glass of water, but now they serve an onion broth soup that's not only healthier for you, but also delicious. Their portions are considerable, spice levels are perfect. I usually order medium, which is spicy, but not overwhelming where it takes you forever to finish your food cause you keep having to take breaks to wipe your eyes and nose. The best thing about the food is that it's even better the next day because the spices have a chance to meld and mature. It truly is a pleasure to eat their left overs. They also use quality ingredients... your rice won't be hard and disgusting the next day. The menu incorporates pretty much all your standard Thai, plus a few more authentic dishes. I find that in metro Detroit I have a problem finding Thai restaurants that have Massaman, and Pa Nang and Drunken Noodle and Singapore noodles. They usually have a few but not all. I recommend this place to anyone who loves Thai food.

Total hole in the wall. Very good pad kee mow aka drunken noodle. Right about the time I was ready to curse because I didn't think it wasn't spicy enough, I felt the heat. I ordered it Thai spicy and that's what I got. I could have done without the dirty looks from some random dude chilling in his pick-up truck in front of the restaurant but I will forgive that. It is Michigan after all. If I had to live there I wouldn't be happy either. Cute hostess there too and that never hurts.

    (5)
  • Robert T.

This place is better than the competition, but it's not quite five star. It's also the smallest restaurant I have ever eaten in. My medium plus was on the hot side, so be careful.

  • Dewey G.

Absolutely awful! I got food poisoning from this place, which left me defecating and vomiting for hours. Never again will I patronize this "restaurant." It was my first time there and certainly my last. This place should be shutdown, at least until an investigation into its food practices Is conducted.

I have been frequenting Cafe Thai for over 7 years and that should say it all! Their food is great quality and always consistent. Although I am not thrilled about their spring rolls, everything else I've had I love. They also have the friendliest staff (which is not always easy to find at crazy busy restaurants in this area around lunch time). Although I do not want them to move away I do agree they have a very small area for eating in, this is their only downside. So as long as you stick to carryout you should not have any issues.

This, I swear, is the doppelganger to Thai Café in Royal Oak. Ryan and I ventured out to Northwestern, which I drive on basically everyday, but rarely dine on, to Café Thai because I had a coupon from my mom's Entertainment Book. I am not one to argue with buy one get one free and we figured it was worth a shot. The inside of the restaurant is small with maybe 8 tables? It is well decorated in a Thai motif (fancy that!) with wall paper that has Thai elves playing instruments and the occasional giant insect. The menu was almost identical to TC in RO so I figured I would order something that I order frequently just to have a healthy comparison. I decided on Pad Se'ew with steamed tofu, medium spicy and a spring roll. The dinners came with soup which I declined because it was made with chicken, but I thought it was nice of them to at least offer it. I think it's funny that I am saying it was nice of them to but am irritated that the Clawson Steak House didn't have an alternative. Hm. Maybe I am a little hypocritical sometimes. Eh. I wasn't expecting soup to be included and I could have ordered soup if I wanted it. Regardless, I did not have soup. The Spring roll was delicious! It was bigger than most and really quite fresh tasting--it might have been the best I have had in the Metro-Detroit area. Dinner arrived and the portion was considerable. I thought the spiciness was perfect. They use a special blend of spicy magic they say and I would nod agreeing. I still don't understand why Thai restaurants don't offer facial tissues at the table--it would be the best idea ever. The food was great. It was perfectly flavored, not too sweet as sometimes Se'ew can be and not incredibly salty. The egg/noodle/broccoli ratio was as if DaVinci himself had figured it out. I ended up finishing my entire plate and was left with that satisfied feeing that is best described by a sort of gurgle groan tinged with defeat by deliciousness. Our service was amazing. The staff was all very nice and over the top helpful. In such close quarters with the other diners it was good to know that everyone in the restaurant was being so well cared for. They also had the most fun take out boxes that were somehow square at the top and circular at the bottom. And red. Amazing! I would definitely return to Café Thai--even without a coupon! Though, I think they may offer one online. I do believe they are closed on Sundays. If you find yourself driving down that crazy street called Northwestern and are craving the Thai, give it a trai. Get it, like Thai--trai? Maybe I'm trai-ing too hard. At least I'm amused.

I was first introduced by a friend's family. Our group was celebrating someone's birthday and someone chose thai. I was totally glad to add another resturant to my thai food rotation. My sister is also a huge fan of thai food and we often get it when we have our 'sister' dinner dates, so it has to be said that Cafe Thai has become one of many places we can depend on for a tasty meal. At Cafe Thai, the spicyness seems to be just right. I love the rice soup that is offered before a meal and the chicken satay is so tasty. My sister will often get a yummy curry tofu dish, I think last time she got a yellow curry. I often will stick to noodle dishes. The portion size is great, definitely allows me to have some left-over for lunch the next day. The service here is great. The actual resturant is tiny and there isn't much room for many tables. When I came in with that group, it was cramped for us and for other tables. (Minus one star for the cramped dinning room and not always comfortable chairs). Overall, great thai, good service...I would definitely eat here more often if the location was a teeny bit closer to where I lived.

Called ahead to specifically order my favorite dish and the order person stated it would be ready in 10 minutes. Arrived 10 minutes later, paid and sat down to wait. 10 minutes later, Individuals coming in and ordering received their order before me... I thought this strange so I asked about my order and all the cashier could tell me was she told the kitchen staff that I was waiting... 10 minutes later the food was made available. 30 minutes after calling in I received my order. The food was delicious, the order and ticketing process is not. The place is small, and calling ahead is suggested, but it's obvious they placed order behind all the rest before starting on my order... thanks Cafe Thai! Update --- Went back after the events above. and decided to stay as there was seating available. Had the best meal and the service was outstanding. I still recommend calling ahead first for carryout or if sitting down, attend during non-peak times. Great food, but still a very small seating arrangement, otherwise it would be 5 stars.

This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THAI RESTAURANT* I always have the Pad Pak with Shrimp and Tofu with a side of rice. But I have also had the Pad Thai and Singapore Noodles. Every dish I have ever had makes me smile.... Really Big! Their Tom Yum is so fresh. I always have the crab cheese as an appetizer. Their selections are succulent. I have never had a bad experience in going to this place. I had trouble with one girl rushing me while I was dining in ,but she no longer works there, so that's no longer an issue. I would recommend this place for a business lunch, intimate dinner, or carry out. You'll be satisfied with your end results. Bon Appetite*

The brown rice is phenomenally bad. I don't know how you can make brown rice that badly! So was the white rice. Neither had anything to do with any form of thai cooking. I can say safely from living in n california, s cali, and NYC that hundreds of varieties of SE Asian restaurants, in no restaurant I've ever been to was it as completely awful as this one. Do not recommend.

After getting tipsy on mead, there is nothing tastier than some Basil Fried Rice and a Choo Chee Pla and Cafe Thai fit the button. This is a tiny, itty, bitty restaurant with 4 tables (our party of six took up two of them) and is a family run establishment. We had a very sweet and smiling waitress who looked after us well. The food was very good; the fish in the choo chee pla, was fried very golden and crisp (on par with Siam Spicy). The medium spice level was just a little too mild for us, but definitely had a little zing. The Basil Fried Rice, was some of the best I've ever had. There was plenty of flavor in the rice, but it was nice and dry, and not swimming in sauce. Some friends of ours ordered the Curry Fried Rice which I tasted, and that was very good too. My advice... have the fried rice! The portions were pretty big, especially for the price.

I first came to Cafe Thai when I started my job at an insurance brokerage in Farmington Hills last January. Ever since, I've been a devoted regular, making at least two trips a month to pick up lunch here. For one, this place has THE best spring rolls of any Thai restaurant in the greater Detroit area. No other joint serves a roll this crispy. It's long rather than wide, which allows you to dip it comfortably in the accompanying saucer of sweet & sour sauce, and the veggies inside are packed in tightly, so they won't all fall out of the roll after your first bite. The chicken satay is a bit dry, but the incredible peanut sauce makes up for it. This place has a few downsides, but it's great in ways that overshadow the cons. For example, the Pad Thai dish is occasionally watery, but only because it's served piping hot, every single time. The hotter the dish, the thinner the sauce. If you don't want it to have such thin sauce, just stir it a bit and wait for it to cool. The spice is usually just right. Mild has a little bite, medium has a slow burn, and hot is a bit too much for me (though I'm a little bit of a spice wimp). XXX-Hot (also known as "Suicide") is out of the question for me, though based on how hot the other spice levels are, I'm sure it will appease spicey-food lovers. Other dishes like the Drunken Noodles and Pad Se-ew may be too salty for some patrons, but the wait staff is more than willing to accommodate all taste-related requests, in spite of a neck-breakingly busy lunch shift. I'm sure some patrons might also dislike the small size of the restaurant (roughly the dimensions of a large master bedroom), but others will think it's just the right size for an intimate conversation. It's a little loud, but that's even better, because your conversation will blend into the others and you'll never feel you're being eavesdropped on. I'll continue to be a regular here as long as it's feasible, and I can readily vouch for the consistently high quality of Cafe Thai's food.

Oh LORD! You know we all have pet peeves? And we all experience imposter syndrome of some kind at some stage in our lives... and while it's not that I'm not empathetic to that, it's just... sigh! It's a small restaurant, about 15'x15' box with about 10 tables or so. There were three other people/couples there at 2pm in the afternoon, so it boded not badly for them. You sit down at a table of your choice, the waitress brings you two soups with rice - in Thai it's called 'kao-tom' and I was pleasantly surprised that's what they serve instead of hot and sour soup which I've found many Thai restaurants serve here. (BTW not Thai food... although I don't complain, I love hot and sour soup - although not at most of the restaurants I've been to in Michigan) But the kao-tom was SOOOO salty! I did finish it just because I haven't had it in such a long time, but the soup spoon is too big for the bowl and it was hard to finish. The food took, longer than I expected but still not a super long time to come out. When I eat Thai food, I always ask for vinegar. Something about Thai food in Thailand is that they always season it to their individual liking, and I always use vinegar since I like my food with a sour kick. And they did not have any left. Now, excuse me but I really do not understand not having vinegar. I don't know, call me naive but I think it's just one of those basic items that you have in your kitchen? Oil, soy sauce, vinegar, oyster sauce, sugar, etc~ especially in an Asian kitchen, or a Thai kitchen... Call me bitter. As for the food itself, so I don't know if the owners are Thai or not, but they certainly look it but the flavor is absolutely not there. I ordered some spicy beef with kaffir leaves, something I'm not even sure is Thai, and my friend ordered a noodle dish but it just reeked of soy sauce and was overly salted. We also had an appetizer, the summer rolls, and it was... medicore at best and had cucumber. I hate cucumber. Sigh! Anyways, I most likely will not be back, but it is cheap...

WOW! Such a great place for take-out! The staff is extremely nice, and patient. I love ordering vegetable curry, but I am particular about the kind of curry and what vegetables (I know, I'm difficult!) but whatever changes or additions I make they always comment on how delicious it sounds rather than getting annoyed with my difficult order. That right there goes a long way with me! The food is wonderful and the prices match -- $6.50 for a HEAPING lunch portion. Plus, they always have a 10% discount coupon online. Warning - if you want to try this place as dine-in, be aware that this place is TINY with a capital T. You could maaaaaybe dine with four people max, but you would be better off with just a party of two. I hope they expand into a bigger place because I'm sure it would be packed for lunch every day!

I remember finding this place through yelp last summer when looking for a place to eat with friends. Best thing yelp has helped me find by far. the food is incredible, i must warn you after eating here, no other thai place will compare! i've been to places in downtown Detroit, Birmingham, and Ann Arbor, and all they did was make me miss cafe thai. the place is small like some reviews have said because it's take out restaurant that has seating for roughly 20 people for connivence. it's take out prices for top quality food. the tofu is always nice and firm, the spice range is great and all the levels have different flavors rather than just a burning mouth sensation. also they use vegetable oil instead of peanut oil for anyone that can't have it. if you give this place a try, you won't regret it.

This place is a find. Really small and simple but very good food and finally a thai restaurant that gives you soup with dinner, not just lunch. It is a great value as well. Most of the time we can't finish it all and bring some of the meal back home. We have become a regular here.

I'm really torn on what to rate Cafe Thai because although the food was great, the service was not. When we entered the place, we stood there for awhile. The employee was helping another customer, but she looked at us and didn't acknowledge us. We took it upon ourselves to seat ourselves and ask for a menu. However, instead of giving us a menu she told us to have a seat and she'll be with us. The way she said it bothered me the most. She had a bit of an attitude. Even when ordering, I felt i was given attitude when we weren't to order. She did lighten up as our visit progressed. As for our dishes, chicken fried rice, chicken pad thai, and chicken yellow curry, they were all yummy! The chicken fried rice was the best and it was the first to go. Echoing what others before have said, the veggies are so fresh and crisp. The fried rice was nicely flavored and it made me want more, even though I was full. The chicken pad thai and chicken yellow curry tasted a bit different than what I'm used to, but I was still able to appreciate all the flavors. We came a few minutes after 4PM and we were charged the dinner rate. But for lunch, they have very reasonable prices with their main dishes starting at $6.50.

I'm staying at an extended-stay hotel just down the road, and have been craving Thai for a while, so I stopped here for takeout on my way home from a late night at work. I walked in the door about 9:15pm. It's a very small place situated in a strip mall- only about 8 tables for two- but nicely decorated, if you're going to eat there. I didn't see my favorite, Pad Kee Mao, on the menu, so I got the Drunken Noodles I had read good things about. I also ordered a bowl of Tom Kha with chicken. I wanted shrimp chips (again, because of a Yelper) but they said they were out. That's good, since it probably means they're made fresh each day. I only waited about 6 or 7 minutes for my order, even though I hadn't called it in. I printed a 10%-off coupon from their website, so my entree and soup came to just over $10. The soup was good- fresh mushrooms and tomatoes, the right amount of coconut, and a lovely consistency. Next time I would skip the chicken and get vegetables instead; the chicken didn't really add anything to the soup. It was also really, really hot, so I had to wait until my noodles were mostly gone before I could eat it without burning myself. The Drunken Noodles were also pretty tasty. It was a generous portion; I finished it, but was a little past 'comfortably full' when I was done. This place minces the chicken in this dish, which is not something I've seen before, but I really liked it. There was a decent amount of chicken, lots of noodles, and a reasonable number of green pepper strips, all in a translucent savory brown sauce (not like Chinese 'brown sauce'). There was a tad too much sauce for my tastes, but I'm generally a no-sauce-at-all guy, so that's not saying much. I had asked for a "hot" level of spice, but I would consider mine somewhere around "mild+". Next time I'll emphasize that I want it really, really spicy. I may be a white guy eating at a suburban Detroit Thai takeout joint, but I can handle a ton of spice. If you're the same way, be very clear with them. Overall, I'm happy with it. Not the greatest Thai I've had in the USA, but it's pretty darn good for where it is. It also has great prices, unlike most of the other menus I've looked at around here. Don't drive for 45 minutes to get here, but, if you're in the neighborhood, swing on by.

Very nice location, decent food, good quantity, you can have 2 meals for one dinner portion. The waitresses are pretty nice. I recommend this place to people who like Pad Thai Curry. Dinner cost only $9+1 cent so it is a great deal for sure. Food is not greasy like many others. First place I go when I need some Thai Curry for my stomach:)

Decent Thai food, but I like my curries to have a little more coconut milk. Stay away from the Thai cream soda or whatever it is...it's green. I also had a hair in my food, but the waitress was quick to replace it.

Love this place! My office is nearby and my coworkers and I started coming here for lunch maybe 4 or 5 years ago. Many of their entree dishes aren't as good as at other places like Bangkok Hung, but their fried rice and noodle dishes are divine. As others have mentioned, the place is TINY. I usually try to get there before 11:30 for lunch to ensure a seat. The staff is very friendly and quick. The food isn't usually very spicy, so I generally order a half-step hotter than I would at other restaurants.

This is a small restaurant, but they take great care in making sure that you have a wonderful experience. I've been going to Cafe Thai for about 3 1/2 years and they are astounding. The staff are the most friendly that anyone could imagine. I've dined in a few times and the food was well served and portions actually seem a little larger than when I order carry-outs. I'm a little sad that I'll be moving to Canton in a few days and I'll have to drive about 30 minutes to get here. It's worth the journey though, for my favorite Thai food restaurant. Try the Siam Crispy Rolls... :)

This place is hands down the best Thai in metro Detroit. I'll drive thirty minutes when I'm in the mood for Thai rather than going someplace closer to home. It's right down the street from work which is dangerous! They get nuts at lunch so go at 11am or 1pm to miss the crowd. Their seating space is small and snug but the patrons are friendly. I love their Apple salad, spring rolls, and FR3, I get it medium with chicken, no baby corn and add pineapple. AMAZING. The staff is so friendly and considerate, for a while I would call so often for carryout they knew my voice and my order. I love meeting people for lunch here because everything is good and the service is great.

My friend and I had dinner at Cafe Thai and I ordered the Pad Ped. The portion (READ: plate) is smaller than it used to be. The spice level - hot - was Asian hot! Good job, Cafe Thai! I used to dine in at least once/ month because I worked across the street. I am a creature of habit and would always order Pad Ped. While their prices haven't gone up, their plates shrank like Shrinky Dinks. It makes me sad because I was looking forward to having some leftovers for lunch tomorrow!! Tip: there is a 10% off coupon (printable) on their website. Kinda makes up for the smaller portions! - 1 star for being sneaky and using smaller plates. - 1 star for sub-par service.

Ok, here in libel Southfield on Microsoft's dime for an interview and I only eat local when I travel. Small cafe seats about 20. Warm staff. Awesome food. Nough said. Btw Pad Thai = traditional awesomeness.

The panang chicken was good but the fried rice was dry, disappointing. I used to go here all the time but something has changed, the food isn't as, dare I say authentic, as it used to be. Not to mention the thai iced tea was orange and tasted like syrup. Also, no more shrimp chips (boooo). I'll keep looking to find that perfect thai spot.

  • Mike D.

I work nearby and have been coming here for lunch for years. The dining room is very tiny and the carry-out line is often out the door at lunchtime but they do their best to accommodate their dine-in guests given these constraints. I come here exclusively for the noodles though I see lots of folks do the curry and rice dishes as well. I believe their pad see ew is the best in the area -- by A LOT! I get it with chicken medium spice adding vegetables (usually bean sprouts) and it's delicious. The noodles are perfectly cooked and the sauce is flavorful with just the right amount of sweetness -- it's never greasy. The spice level is slightly above average in my opinion so go mild if you're unsure.

After a business trip full of conventional food, I was ready to return to a cuisine I like. Cafe Thai was perfect. Again, I ordered the pad pak curry (creature of habit) and again it was perfect. I am giving 5 stars because I have yet to find a Thai restaurant this good since my original review. Cafe Thai is the standard against which I'll measure all the rest. If you live near here, go often. If you don't live near here, go anyway. It's that good.

I ordered the FR3 (Fried Rice with a variety of veggies) and it was great! I love Thai places that serve a variety a fried rice options. This particular fried rice had egg, onions, peapods, broccoli, carrots and mushrooms. The menu listed water chestnuts but I did not see or taste any in my dish, which is a downfall because I love those crunchy things. The rice wasn't packed with veggies like I'd prefer, but it was packed with flavor and spice. I ordered hot which tasted great. Stung a little the first few bites. The place is very small inside, I'd recommend take out if you are headed there during the corporate lunch rush. I opted for take-out and it was ready when I got there and still piping hot when I got it back to my office. Overall good Thai, well priced, healthy portions, I'll probably be back again.

I stop by on 7/31/15 Friday night. The food is good, I ordered takeout Pad Thai noodles with pork. I had eaten about 3 forks and on the 4th there was this long piece HAIR in my food. Yep, I trashed it I will NEVER go there again. The cooks need head coverings. I started to take it back but didn't want to step back in there or wanted another dish.

I am by no means a Thai expert, but this is by far the best Thai food I have ever had. I have ordered their Masaman Curry and Drunken Noodles, both excellent. For me it is all about the Pad Thai here, by far the best Pad Thai I have ever had. Maybe one of my top ten favorite foods. We order from here for lunch at work and I typically order the dinner portion so I can save half for the next day's lunch (they have lunch and dinner portions, dinner portions being probably twice the size for two extra dollars). Very reasonable prices, always extremely friendly when I pick it up. I have never actually eaten IN the restaurant (I have only ordered to-go), I do know it is a VERY small dining area.

I guess after visiting Thailand you compare all thai food to the food you have in Thailand. The food was good, but was not great! I ordered the pad Thai which was way too spicy, I ordered medium and couldn't enjoy the food because I was overcome with the spicy flavor. The crab Rangoon was too cream cheesy not enough crab.

The quantity of food was good as per the price. The flavours were pretty average. I liked the framed artwork depicting elephants. I was disappointed with the hygiene levels - the spoons and glasses were unclean.

I love the pad thai here! Plenty of sauce so even if there are leftovers, its not dry the next day. The tofu is cooked well and cut into the right sized pieces to not be overwhelming. My only change would be that they include a lime instead of a lemon, but I always have limes at home so it was fine. I added some cilantro, which really elevated the flavor. Medium spicy was just a tad under the spice level that I expected but still hit the mark. The tom kha soup was a little thicker than some other places but also had good flavor and a lot of veggies in it. The crab rangoons are a little odd though, having large chunks of imitation crab meat. Regardless, the pad thai will keep me coming back!

Sorry!

Jeffrey B. and I ventured out here the other day because he had a coupon from his mother's entertainment book for buy one get one free entrees.

This place is better than the competition, but it's not quite five star. It's also the smallest restaurant I have ever eaten in. My medium plus was on the hot side, so be careful.

Absolutely awful! I got food poisoning from this place, which left me defecating and vomiting for hours. Never again will I patronize this "restaurant." It was my first time there and certainly my last. This place should be shutdown, at least until an investigation into its food practices Is conducted.

Decent Thai food, but I like my curries to have a little more coconut milk. Stay away from the Thai cream soda or whatever it is...it's green. I also had a hair in my food, but the waitress was quick to replace it.

Curry rice, curry noodles, drunken noodles, and Pad Thai are among my favorites here!

Excellent Thai food. Pad Thai noodles were great. Small location but great for carry out.

Great soups (Tom sum), and crab Rangoon was really good with chunks of imitation crab inside with cream cheese. I had the pad tahi and it wasn't as good as others I've had in other places but it was still good. I would recommend this place!

This could be one of my top 10 favorite restaurants. The value equation is unbelievable. Under $7.00 for an amazing lunch. This is must try for Thai food lovers.

Love it, they have the best chicken Panang. And they have great curry fried rice. Blazing fast service!
