Great chefs, great value. My favorite sushi place around this area. You pretty much have to order the roll of the day special if you're hungry and like variety and value. Octopus salad was really nice and tender. Nice service as well.

Glad to have tried it finally! I was in the area and hungry, so thought sushi would be a good meal. I had the Miso soup and the Philadelphia roll.....good fresh food and good service. Everything was enjoyable at Umi Sushi. I will definitely return again:)
(4)Marirose S.
This is unquestionably the best bang for your buck for sushi in the area. Umi rotates their special rolls daily for buy one, get one free. Their Yum Yum roll is awesome!
(5)Adi O.
This is what sushi is supposed to taste like and look like. It was amazing!

Listen, I'm going to rave. I had some awesome sushi at Umi Sushi thanks to Eric S, thanks for the introduction! All the rolls I had were some of the freshest ever. The fried rolls were extremely light, and not heavy like I've had before. The rice here was best I've had, and their 'krab' salad packed flavor. - Crab stick Tempura: This is exactly what it sounds like. AS basic as it is, it was a yummy starter to the meal along with the miso soup. Fried just right, I was asked if I wanted teriyaki or spicy mayo drizzled over my crab stick, so I asked for both on the side. Spicy mayo was the way to go, dip it in! - Rock n' Roll: (Must order again) OMG what! BBQ eel, avocado, cucumber, egg roll on one side, then a tuna, salmon, cream cheese roll on the other side. Then both rolls are wrapped into another roll and tempura battered. Topped with 5 different sauces! I LOVED this roll, it was rich, balanced, and the 5 sauces did a flavor dance in my mouth. - Samurai: (might order again) White tuna, salmon, snapper, cream cheese, green onion, tempura fried topped w/ hot sauce & spicy mayo. - Dynamite: (Would not order again) Cali roll topped w/ 5 different chopped pieces of fish, spicy mayo and hot sauce, then broiled. The baked topping tasted like Korean Gochujang. My co-diners ordered some rolls that I really liked. Two from their plate i totally loved are below. - Super Bowl (Must order again) Crab stick, avocado, cucumber, topped w/ spicy crab salad, crunch, hot pepper sauce, and spicy mayo! - Black Pearl (Must order again) Crab salad, avocado, cucumber, topped w/ cooked shrimp, bbq eel, crunch, black caviar, and then eel sauce. Wowzer!

When I walked into this restaurant, this place reminded me of Japanese restaurants in CA. Authentic decor and Japanese background music This place offers a great variety of sushi rolls and as well as a great selection of Japanese/Korea cuisines. I found out that this place offers buy one get one free roll on one selected sushi roll. So we ordered "under the sea" sushi rolls special roll..It is pretty good..the sushi roll was topped with seaweed salad..which is something i have never had before . every ingredient is fresh and combination with different sort of meats are great I would recommend this place..
(4)Jessica S.
This place is awesome!! Have been several times and every time it gets better. My fiancé and I usually get two crunchy California rolls and whatever the special bogo roll is. And they are always on point!!! Their miso soup is also delicious, I always add a little soy sauce to it. This place will not disappoint. They offer pictures to go with every roll so you can see what you'll be getting, instead of just relying on a description. I highly recommend this place for the beginner and the advanced sushi lover.
(5)Manda J.
The service is great and the food is awesome. Every type of sushi I've tried has been great. Other than that, the seaweed salad is great (especially spicy) and the edamame, yes.
(4)Bernie S.
This is a pretty decent sushi place. I am no expert when it comes to sushi but I felt the sushi was fresh, aesthetically pleasing, the tempura was crisp and tender, and the miso soup was ok. The service was great and the place is clean and nice looking on the inside. I would go here again and recommend it It's in a small strip mall near a walmart so the traffic could be heavy at busy times. Parking could be difficult but we found a nice spot in front of the restaurant. I can't say anything about the specials since we didn't have any but they seemed ok.

My friend and I are big on Sushi, I came across the great reviews here and figured why not give it a shot. Waited about 5 minutes before someone came to us to see about sitting is down somewhere. How their restaurant is set up with it being a little small, some of their tables are TOO close to the door. We, unfortunately got sat first table next to it. On a Friday night, that place was way too busy to be sitting that close to the door. We were both freezing our entire meal, which took a good 45 minutes to arrive. Wait staff was friendly though. Our sushi was good, but it didn't have that wow factor that we usually get when going to Asahi on Garfield and Canal. With Asahi the first to last bite had you saying "Mmm!" And literally never wanting you to even chew and swallow, savoring each bite. I liked the fact the have daily specials too. Last night was the Yum Yum roll. Buy one, get one free. Can't ever go wrong with a Yum Yum roll, let alone TWO!

Affordable and delicious. A lot of sushi places in this area and this one stands above.

If I could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of my life, it would be umi! First of all, it's always spotless in there and the staff is always friendly and does a great job. They have a great selection of salads, different types of sushi and other Japanese meals. They also have great specials, and run a buy one roll get one free deal every day, with the roll changing every day. The food is consistent and absolutely delicious, and the tempura rolls are to die for. The spicy hurricane is my favorite.. Presentation is great, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy. You get blinds between each table so that you have a bit of privacy despite the place being a little bit smaller. Love it!
(5)Mon T.
The fiesta roll is one of the best rolls I've EVER had! I recommend it to anyone. However, know that it is deep fried and 10 pieces. It is quite filling so I recommend sharing with a friend or ordering less other sushi than normal. Nice pleasant wait staff. I'll be back to explore more menu options.
(4)Andrea T.
I'm a huge fan of this sushi place! Here are a few great reasons why: - They have photos for very roll they have AND they come out looking exactly like the photo. Being I am a visual eater, this is a tremendous help in decision making. - They also have a buy one get one free roll on one selected sushi rolls. This changes daily and they allow it for carry outs as well. BONUS! Some may think it is not good because it's tucked away in a strip mall but do not let that fool you. Umi Sushi has a great variety of sushi rolls, sashimi, negri and an array of Japanese and Korean dishes. 3 of my favorite rolls are: - Under the sea - this sushi roll is topped with seaweed salad. Pretty interesting - Spicy mexican - topped with spicy crab - Umi roll Check it out, delish: shelbyumisushi.com/umi-m… Down side for some may be that it's small and parking is not the best.

We love the Havana Night roll. It's made with cucumber to save on calories. Excellent broth for Udon noodles.
(5)Tara L.
Decent sushi rolls, and cute environment. We weren't expecting a ton, but what we were surprisingly satisfied with was their tekka maki ($4 for 6 pieces). Good proportion of tuna to rice ratio, and the sushi rice had the right amount of vinegar in it. Ironically, their cooked rolls that we ordered, Chicken Teriyaki roll ($7.95 for 5 pieces) and Eel Crunch roll ($6 for 5 pieces) were lackluster and too saucy. Eel crunch roll was cold and there was an overwhelming amount of tobiko. Chicken Teriyaki roll was a rip off considering that there was a tiny sliver of chicken wrapped around a huge mound of sushi rice. We always have pretty good success with the cooked rolls at Japanese restaurants here in Michigan, but here at Umi, the tuna roll was the star. The servers are really young girls (look like they are in high school), so don't be taken aback if their service is a little slow. They are nice girls. Sushi bar staff was pleasant and cordial. Overall, I might be inclined to come back here and try their other menu items, but I'm not in a hurry to do so.
(3)David G.
I have been back several time every time since my bad review the sushi has been fresh
(4)Neko L.
Very decent and clean little store, love the atmosphere and the sushi inside, tried their sushi last time when I went there and is just awesome!!!!!!
(5)Chris T.
The head chef of UMI used to own JOY sushi on van dyke. He is a great sushi chef and knows how to run a sushi joint. The sushi is always good, clean, and fresh. I like to come here whenever I can because it is good sushi and it is an indipendant owner. What I especially love is the mushroom beef dumpling soup (not sure exactly what it is called) but you have to ask for it cuz they don't serve it with your sushi (you do, however get the tofu soup and ginger salad with your order, both of which I am not a fan of at any restaurant although his ginger salad is good if you are in the mood for it) All in all if you are near Wal-Mart on 23 mile and van dyke and are in a mood for sushi you must stop by and try UMI. It is great sushi. Right by starbucks.
(4)Lisa B.
This was my 2nd time having had sushi from UMI. It was worth the wait. Tried some new things. Loved the crab tempura. Prices very reasonable. The menu descriptions and pictures were wonderful if you are new to the world of sushi.
(4)Nichole W.
AMAZING!!! Service, food, EVERYTHING. Absolutely love this restaurant! My boyfriend brought me here a few years ago and I was a bit nervous about trying sushi at first in the first place, but even my first experience was great. I've been back countless of times and I still LOVE this place :), Keep it up Umi!
(5)Michael P.
we have been going here for about three years. very good sushi at reasonable prices. we always get prompt and polite service. this year they started a roll of the day special that is buy one- get one free. about 90% of the time I get (or try) the roll of the day. convienent location for Shelby Township/Washington area residents
(4)Jana L.
Overall good but definetly not impressive. The service was a bit slow on a Sunday around 5 pm when there were only 3 tables full. The selection was pretty good although over half of the rolls were 'deep fried' (no, they did not refer to them as tempura). We selected the Yum-Yum roll, the Samurai, & a Spicy Tuna. The soup before the meal was good but forgettable. Our rolls came out soon after without having to wait too long after we were done with our soups. The spicy tuna was great & quite fresh. The Yum-Yum roll was good & reminded me of a Champange roll I've had at other sushi resturants. The Samuari was overly tempuraed and just tasted like fried batter. The subtle flavors of the fish were lost. The prices were average & they even have a special BOGO roll of the day. I was just in town, craving sushi, & it did the trick. I would not make a special trip to go here.

Good sushi, great service. I have been eating there for 2years and they are very consistent. Great for a 1st date. The new owners took over back in Jan of 2009, at first I was a little unsure, but they have prooved them self to be a very good restaurant. Do yourself a favor and go there for a first date, or even just to re-ignite that old flame. No A;chohol license yet, but who care, Sushi is is perfect with out Booze!
(3)Rebecca A.
This is the perfect sushi spot for a casual night out. Sure, the selection isn't over-the-top extensive but it's a strip mall sushi joint, for cryin' out loud. And it's the best darn strip mall sushi joint I've ever been to, that's for sure. I've been going to Umi for years and I've never ONCE had an issue with freshness. It's always consistently delicious and the prices are fair for the quality. I've brought a lot of people who have been skeptical of the quality of such a place (namely my SO) and all of them have been immediately converted into lifelong customers. For the first few years I'd patronized Umi, I was just too shy to ask for rolls to be modified to accommodate my avocado allergy (because really, who's allergic to avocado?) so I basically tried every roll that was made sans avocado. As of this year, however, I worked up the courage to ask and they've been nothing but helpful and kind regarding the matter. I don't know what I was so scared of! And now I can try ALL the rolls without fear! I love this place. For a small sushi restaurant, it's definitely as good as it gets.
(5)Terry C.
This is the best sushi around. Osakas nearby is overpriced and overrated. If you have to choose pick Umi, they also have a BOGO every day. If you loved Tokyo sushi which has closed, then this is the place for you!
(5)Jake A.
I had my first date with my boyfriend here, and I was surprised, though I'm not sure why. It's the oldest secret in the book that sushi restaurants in strip malls are hidden gems, and Umi is no exception. It's a great value for the everyday sushi eater. I don't know where it's written that sushi has to be such an ordeal, I think it can be enjoyed just like a hamburger or steak. I love their salmon, any roll or piece made with salmon is terrific (I'm having an avocado, smoked salmon, & cream cheese hallucination as I write this, so forgive any typos or sudden drops in coherent thought) The environment is cute and warm, and the staff is attentive and helpful. I've been back time and time again, and it's just a good stand by for a quick bite to eat. Maybe I'm biased though since it holds such sentimental value to me. I guess I'm not immune to being mushy, but still....check it out.
(4)Jim L.
Best sushi in northern Macomb. Specials everyday buy one roll get one free is nice. Service is always good. Gets crowded sometimes. Only thing that is bad is parking is shitty in this strip-mall.
(5)Lisa H.
Had dinner here with my husband, and we both really enjoyed it! Crazy roll was our favorite, but everything was good and very fresh. We'll be back!
(4)Sara J.
Best sushi around! I love the Umi roll. I can't get enough of their spicy mayo, I believe that is what it is that is so addicting! The waitstaff is super nice and efficient. They always have a special on sushi rolls, buy one get one free. How can you not like a place with this deal?! That's right you have to love it.
(5)Dick E.
I really like their sushi and some of the species they run. My friend is a vegetarian and loved their veggie selections. I tried a few pieces and enjoyed them as well.
(5)Heather T.
LOVE! Umi is our weekly sushi fix! Favorites include the Black Pearl, Rock N' Roll, Super Thunder, Starfish, Salmon on the Beach, and the Lobster Tempura. The Miso soup is complementary and everyday a different roll is BOGO FREE! Sushi+BOGO need I say more? The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is very casual. The rolls are priced reasonably for the quality and the quantity you receive. Regardless of how busy they are you'll receive your food in an extremely timely manner. My boyfriend and I usually get whatever the roll of the day is and two other rolls and our bill is usually between $40-$50 depending on what rolls we choose. The most expensive roll is like $16 or $17 I believe it's the Godzilla roll (which is delicious). All the other speciality rolls are like $12. The rolls are usually huge! You not only get a good amount of pieces but the pieces are large! In addition they are not stingy with the amount/size of ingredients used. The only complaint I have is the parking spots are small and the parking lot itself is very narrow. Watch out for cars flying out of the Starbucks!
(5)Naveen S.
I have been to Umi Sushi a few times - its local and near my place but I have one big issue. They DO NOT take American Express. This is a MAJOR problem. Every time I go to a Sushi, or Chinese, or Japanese restaurant they never take AMEX. I don't know why? You want to be cheap and not pay the extra fees but 10 times worse to loose customers and bad reviews. I went in there tonight and the girl at the counter said AMEX is bad for small business - NOT TRUE!!! I own a small business - we take ALL credit cards. If you really want to be cheap - then charge an extra .50 cents or $1.00 fee for AMEX but at least take the card. VERY VERY VERY disappointing in how this business is ran and that fact you do not take AMEX - its very bad...
(1)Katie C.
Best sushi in Shelby/ Macomb area. Quick, friendly service. They have a BOGO roll every day which is always delicious.
(5)TheReal R.
Fresh sushi! Veggies have a crunch, prices are right, compared to other places. The only downside for me personally is that they do not serve alcohol. So no nice sake that goes with some of the rolls / sashimi I ordered. I will come back here when in the neighborhood.
(4)Courtney C.
Sushi roll of the day is always bogo FREE!
(5)A W.
Went here for the first time today because of the reviews on Yelp... OMG! LOVE!!! The place is in a strip mall next to Starbucks and looks really small from the outside. Inside this quaint little Shushi resturant resides.....tastefully decorated, clean, very friendly staff. Music that is played inside the resturant goes along with the atmosphere...very nice! The Sushi is great, served up in style. The fried rice was also some of the best I've had. So happy I've finally found a Sushi place in my area! Happy customer, please press repeat over and over!!!!
(5)Lori I.
Good prices with the buy one get one free roll specials. Food was just o.k. Not bad but defiantly not the best sushi around.
(3)Robb B.
Best sushi in the Shelby Township area. I love the bento boxes for lunch. They are a great deal and fill you up. The sushi roll of the day is buy one get one free which is awesome. I cant go a week without stopping in.
(5)Suzi G.
Best sushi and prices around. Can't wait to go back
(5)Keith C.
A rotating buy-one-get-one "roll of the day"? Sushi drenched in spicy mayo sauce? Sold.
(4)Brian E.
Great sushi... A nice atmosphere... And about average prices. (Common sushi like California rolls are the same price as everywhere... Their specialty rolls are a little more on the pricey side but worth it). The decor nice... It's located in a strip mall near Walmart... As good as Little Tree Sushi in RO IMO...
(4)Chelsea A.
I have a new girlfriend, and we went on an adventure to Umi Sushi. I am not a snob when it comes to sushi, and I totally don't mind when these spots are in a strip mall. This place is cute, clean and very friendly. Nice lighting, cool tile mosaics of fish types hanging on the walls, bamboo curtain separating kitchen and dining area. I liked it! The rolls were YUM!! We had the Starfish roll, and Umi roll, and a cucumber roll I forget the name of, some edema me, a Tako salad, house salads and miso. Yes, we were hungry. Everything was fresh, beautiful, delish and flavorful. The Starfish roll was especially beautiful, but the Umi roll was the very best tasting. I would totally come back here when Im in the area, but it's an hour from home so I can't make it a regular stop. The service was VERY good, very kind and fast. Thanks UMI!
(4)Bess R.
For sushi in Shelby Township - pretty good. For sushi in general - eh. Fish was fresh...that which wasn't cooked or fried! I couldn't believe that only like 15 of the rolls were raw fish. wtf. We liked the rolls that we ordered, but weren't blown away. And there were no prices on the online menu...and it ended up being a LOT more expensive than I expected...especially for mostly cooked fish. I enjoy raw fish! This is why I order sushi! I probably won't order from them again unless I have a severe craving.
(2)Kimberly M.
I don't get to eat sushi frequently (my husband hates sushi), so sometimes I will stop here by myself for a quick lunch or dinner. The staff are extremely friendly and the sushi is great! Prices are good. Place is nice and quiet. It also helps that they have a picture menu :) I will continue to frequent Umi Sushi because of all of the positive experiences that I have had here.
(5)Ren S.
I've had carry outs and dined in here and have always had the freshest and tastiest sushi. this place is ideal for the sushi-virgin and the sushi-savvy. and they have a different bogo free roll everyday! as well as a full website with a menu, pictures, and descriptions.
(5)Dan R.
LOVE this place. Just had lunch there today. Everything is always very fresh and the service is very attentive.
(4)C J C.
To preface: I'm not a hugely experienced Sushi eater. In fact, I have eaten Sushi at a total of four restaurants simply because when I like a place, I return. Food Quality (probably the most important thing for someone thinking of eating anything raw, you're at the mercy of whomever is buying, storing and deciding if the product is bad): Everything looked good. The fish tuna and salmon looked healthy. Choices: Not the best. My wife put it best when she said that it seemed very Americanized. I don't know what that means, but I found myself struggling to find things that I would enjoy. The tuna in the rolls I ordered was minced (that's just not my taste, personally), and in an odd twist, so was the salmon in my philly roll (it's my wife that complained about the Americanization -- I, personally, don't mind a bit!) Price: Definitely on par with other places I have had Sushi. The Lunch specials weren't all that great. Five choices and most of them amounted to one good roll and a bunch of inexpensive stuff as best I could tell. Soup was included with our order. I didn't review the bill enough to determine if the Green Tea was also included. Food Presentation: Hey, it's Sushi. It always looks good. If it doesn't, chances are the rest of it is wrong too. These guys did a great job. Interior: They took over a failed Quiznos, but if you didn't know that going in, you wouldn't pick up on it. The decor is actually pretty nice inside if that sort of thing matters to you (personally, I could care less). Service: The waitstaff was very friendly. I ate there today, at noon, and they were busy handling take out as well as probably *more* than the typical Wednesday lunch crowd due to it being New Years Eve. Their one waitress on staff today (again, probably because of New Years Eve) was excellent and the food was done very quickly ... considering how many orders there were, I didn't expect this. We were treated very well. Would I return? Probably not. I have a few favorite Sushi joints that I prefer over this one and the price is about the same, so all things being equal, I'd pick my regular spot. Would I recommend it to you? Sure. Like I said, the amount of Sushi I enjoy is not huge, so my minor complaints about some of the things that I ordered could very well be my personal preference. Everything else about this place was great. They DO deliver: 5 mile radius and $25 minimum order. I think I'm more than 5 miles away. If I wasn't, that might get me to order from them again.
(4)Allison G.
For this area, Umi is by far the best sushi I've had and have ALL the time.... They have a special roll that changes every day, and they're buy on get one free! So for 14 bucks you can get two rolls of sushi and the rolls are off of the specialty menu. Love this place!
(5)Jason J.
They have a very comprehensive menu (even includes pictures for every single one of their rolls!) and for once at a sushi restaurant, the food exceeds the presentation. The Rainbow & Havana Night (tuna, salmon, red snapper, crab stick, & cooked shrimp, wrapped in cucumber) rolls were fantastic! Some of the best sushi I've had.
(5)caroline r.
I love Umi Sushi! The sushi, udons, and traditional box style lunch and dinners are delicious. Sushi prices run average but the box style dinners start to get a bit expensive at $18 and up. The chef will give you a complimentry piece of sushi that he creates (mostly off the menu item) as a treat. There wasn't a piece that I didn't love! Excellent. Sushi chef and entire staff are very nice and friendly.
