Went to this place a few times I guess only because out of all the sushi places in downtown Royal Oak this place was the most decent one. The price was a little on the cheap side considering their rolls are pretty fat. One thing I must warn you is that this place has like 3 or 4 different menus and you'll need like 30 minutes to just to figure out what they have...then you'll need another 30 minute to find the rolls on their order sheet to mark the rolls u want. They need to do some major reorganizing and consolidating! They must have like 50 different types of sushi rolls which mostly have the same stuff in it. Two of my favorites are the BMW and Lexus roll...sounds like I have expensive taste but out of all the other rolls these seem to always have the most flavor. The fish they use is pretty fresh but their rice isn't the best. I've probably eaten here like 7 or 8 times because I lived walking distant from downtown and on my 2nd to last visit they decided to started a stamp card program...just my luck!

I've been here a couple of times, but haven't tried too much of the menu. I just tried a few of their sushi rolls, which I thought were good. I've had better quality sushi a number of times, especially in NYC, but I had no complaints. Although, I do think the prices were a bit higher than they should have been, but I guess that can be attributed to the relative lack of options available. Sure, there are a few places offering sushi in Royal Oak, but throughout Metro Detroit, it doesn't seem quite as common as a Big Mac and a large fries. Atmosphere is fanastic though. It feels like a little hole in the wall restaurant that most people might pass by without giving it so much as a single glance. Though not exactly what you would expect from a small "Japanese" restaurant, it's still warm and inviting. If you like sushi, it's definitely worth a try at the very least

I used to love this place but the quality has gone way down! I dont know if they have changed ownership or what but the rolls are sloppily made, smaller and portions for other items are smaller too. I used to love the appetizer with shrimp cream cheese and crab wrapped in a spring roll wrapper. They used to give 5, the last time we went, they only gave 3 AND the price was higher. I think I'll find another place, and learn how to make the appetizer myself

One of my sushi places. The speciality rolls are pretty expensive though. Service isn't the best either. Even when slow you don't see your server much. And no booze which reall sucks. They even use to display an array of japaneese beers behind the sushi bar to taunt and torture you even further.I'm not veg but recommend trying the veggie and pumkin tempura. They own.

Mama's cooking for two days so I ordered take out last night for the family. I've been past this place for years, but never ate there. My 11 yo son is really picky, so I tend to over-order to make sure everyone has something they like. We had the chicken teriyaki which my 11 yo devoured. A California roll for my 15 yo son - he loved it. Pad Thai, salad and spring roll for my husband and me. Pad Thai was as good as I ever had - could have used a few more veggies, but very flavorful. Spring rolls were nice - not too heavy. Salad was a little anemic and dressing too sweet, but that was my only issue. We had no leftovers and the price was very reasonable. We would definately order from there again.

Over priced and poor quality...ordered 40 bucks of sushi and was very unimpressed...some rolls weren't even fully filled. Go here if u want some sushi but don't waste a ton of food.

Bought groupon certificates so I visited this place. Infinity roll and ocean wave roll were pretty good. I also ordered beef donburi. Totally waste of money. Hard rice and mediocre beef + onion. If it werent for the groupon. I probably wouldnt visit here. And i would be right. would NOT visit again

I love sushi, and frankly, I really love Ronin, down the street. But I also love not going broke. And Tokyo Sushi is a good place to have in your pocket when you're jonesin' for a shrimp tempura roll and some nigiri and a vegetable tempura appetizer and you only have about 15 bucks. I got just that order the other night -- carry-out. It was yummy, and crunchy and delicious and mmmmmmmmmmmmm. And, cheap. My friend got some vegetarian rolls and he loved 'em. In fact, Tokyo Sushi was his idea. And the owner lady was really nice. She gave us water and encouraged us to sit down and watch the THREE!! flat-screen TVs while we waited. The place is very clean and, frankly, I'm addicted to TV, so I loved the fact that I got to watch stupid shows like Minute to Win It even while waiting for sushi. Finally, Tokyo Sushi passed the true test of an ethnic restaurant: there were Japanese people eating there. Hey, it's not as trendy or as expensive as Ronin, and you probably won't get hit on (or avoided; how dare you!) by Douche-y McYuppie, but.... wait, those are good things!

I have been to this establishment around 20 or 30 times over the last 10 years. This was always a problem location for a restaurant, and they usually didn't last long. So, first off I'd like to applaude "Toyko Sushi" for sheer tenacity. Prior to todays visit the tables were shellacked, and very sticky. Also, the lighting was terrible, and way too bright. Both of those problems have been corrected and the lighting is a huge improvement. C,mon peeps the sevice is a little strained, but a gazillion times nicer than the "sour puss" waitstaff at "Peking House"..(Chinese). O.K. your right about the cans of Pop...we Americans just expect free re-fills, and they should get it together on that subject. As far as the food goes I think it's really good. I have eaten sushi all over town for the last 20 years, including Noble when it was just 3 stools and nobody knew they were there...also sushi for 20 years in Chi-town before that...I guess my only complaint is that it's supposed to be festive for the sushi chef, and the patrons, kind of like going into a place "where everybody know's your name". Well, you won't experiance that here...but at least your arms don't stick to the tables anymore!
I've only been here once, but the setting is cozy and quiet and the sushi here is amazing! (Almost as good as Musashi in southfield, but for a cheaper price). They have hundreds of rolls to choose from which can be a little annoying, since it took me and my boyfriend about 20 min to choose what we wanted, but hey if you want variety, this place has it! I didn't try any of their thai dishes, but their soups are pretty good too. Edamame is hot and fresh and delicious! (a slightly bigger bowl would be nice but it's only $3 and enough to wet 2 peoples appetite). For 2 soups, 3 premium house rolls, and an edamame bowl, the bill came out to about $40.

This is a really cozy and quiet sushi place in Royal Oak. I come into town for work a few times a month and when my friends in that area and I are craving sushi, we usually hit up Tokyo. It's a very unassuming restaurant, to be sure - the decor isn't anything new or flashy - but the food speaks volumes about the quality of this establishment. I always do rolls a la carte, so I personally can't vouch for the anything other than the sushi here - but the rolls are dependably great. A friend of mine always gets a teriyaki dish and swears by them. All the fish I've had here has been on the higher end in terms of quality. At some restaurants you'll get sashimi that tastes a little too fishy, especially at the less expensive places, but I've never had an issue here. C approved!

Tokyo Sushi & Grill is ok for the food. Thai is not their specialty. I have gotten the Sushi and Thai food here. Their sushi is great, well priced, decent portions, ect. Thai food on the other hand is alright. You can tell that Japanese and Sushi is their specialty. I do not like that they have soda by the can. $1.75 for a can of pop and of course you pay another $1.75 for another one. They have a soda fountain but it may be broken or not working. I would recommend little tree or ronin sushi for Asian food in Royal Oak.

I came here last night with the boyfriend. I really seem to drag him around a lot, huh? We have been looking for a new sushi place and can only afford to do it once a month. We decided to try Royal Oak since they are so many nifty places here. I was just not happy with this place. The waitresses we had were very friendly. I did appreciate their very sunny dispositions. They also were very quick to bring out our salads and crab rangoon appetizers. The salads we had were made with wilty brown lettuce. I understand it maybe the edges of a few leaves were brown and wilty, that happens and I can look past that. Unfortunately, most of my lettuce was sketchy looking. The crab rangoon was pretty good. They were smaller than most of the ones I've ever had but I'm not holding that against them. My boyfriend ordered a Philadelphia and California Roll. I ordered a Spicy Salmon (gotta get those omega-3 fatty acids) and Avocado Roll. We were both really unimpressed with our rolls. They seemed to be sloppily put together and falling apart. The taste wasn't that great. Mine tasted like the fish had been sitting out for awhile which then made me VERY nervous because of the fear of food poisoning. The sushi also cost more than most of the other places we go. Normally we get those same rolls for around $25-28 total. This time our bill was around $35. We wouldn't have minded paying more if the food tasted better. Now for the nit-picky things -- They're whole drink system was a little weird. I get water where ever I go usually but my bf ordered a diet coke. They brought out to the table a glass with ice and a can of diet coke. I thought it was a little tacky. Why not just open the can of pop and pour it into the glass? We also realized that this meant if he wanted a refill they would have charged him for another can of pop. Looks like he was down to one can of pop for the evening. The bathroom situation was pretty neat though. I don't know about the men's bathroom but the ladies had a table with tabloids to read on them. Recent tabloids! I truly appreciated that and thought it was funny. I was also excited to see the electronic trash can so you don't have to touch anything. I thought those were really great conveniences to put in. The food took FOREVER to get. We ordered and it took them 30 minutes to get our food to us. Not only is this place small but there were only four other tables that had people at them. They place was pretty much empty. Don't go here either if you're in a hurry because they will take forever. I would hate to see how long it would take if we ordered anything that had to be cooked! In the end I will not be going back here to eat. I was not happy with the food. The people there were nice and I want to make sure they get credit for that. That is the only thing I can really give them positive feedback for.

My husband and I tried this establishment for the first time last night on what should have been a busy night Thursday-its multiple readily available tables should have been a hint. While the sushi was better than average, the service was truly awful and the place desperately needed to be deep cleaned. The list of rolls was endless but the menu described less than half of them and beverages beyond water were not offered. To top it off, the waitress (a term I use rather loosely) failed to ask parents of a 3 year old child screaming for fun to calm or remove him. I highly recommend carryout or industrial earplugs and the patience of a saint. We won't be back.

The sushi here tastes fresh and on point. I appetized myself with salted edamame and some good Tom Yum soup. After that I ordered a house specialty sushi roll and shared an eel roll with my girlfriend and I must say the sushi was rolled generously with plenty of rice, fillings, etc. The fish products all tasted fresh and not old and the service was quiet and kind. Our waitress could see us and sense when we needed assistance so she did not have to come and bother us too much except for when we needed something. In fact I was able to compliment the chef from where I was sitting. It's a cozy and comfy place to have sushi before hitting the streets of Royal Oak later. A proper meal with soups, appetizer, and plentiful sushi for 2 may run you a solid $40 or more so don't expect the cheapest sushi in town - but do expect some of the better sushi in town. Luckily we had a $10 off coupon we applied and the bill was about $30 with that!!!! One gripe I have with this place is that they have like 3-4 different menus that make up the menu altogether so you really do feel like you are looking through all these different cluttered files in making your decision. Luckily the sushi is so good that you can't go wrong with most of them!

Not the best, not the worst. Decent little no-frills place. I liked the wide variety of the menu although the information is a little disorganized. We got three rolls and a soba noodle dish. There was a little confusion during the ordering process - the sushi chef came over and took our order, and then the hostess, who was our waitress, also tried to. She had to end up letting the kitchen know about our soba because the sushi chef didn't. I don't know, there was a lot of yelling into the kitchen for a second but everything ended up coming out right. The rolls are pretty huge, they are in no way one-biters. But they were a little loose so it was hard to keep it together for multiple bites. The soba was pretty good too. I'd probably come back. It was nothing spectacular but we had no problems.

This place has taken a dive. Their customer service is so poor that I can state with confidence that I will not be back. On two separate occasions, I have placed carry-out orders only to arrive home and find them simply wrong. Obviously my fault for not checking the second time, but still... I'd like to say that I am loathe to give such a poor rating knowing that this is someone's livelihood that I am talking about. But today was the last straw. I ordered the Osaka roll that was described as "spicy tuna and tempura" with a star next to it warning of the hazards of eating raw fish. Standard. I was fairly shocked to see the waitress bring out a deep fried spicy tuna roll. Nowhere did it imply that this was deep fried; the opposite in fact given the raw fish warning. Further, the sushi chef was rather rude in admonishing me for not knowing that tempura implied deep fried (I've been to plenty of restaurants where this description meant spicy tuna and tempura crumbs in a maki presentation). I think the biggest problem here is a difficulty communicating. Until they hire servers who can converse fluently, I think that these problems will continue. Sushi is very average, which isn't a complaint because most sushi restaurants are pretty average; but the horrendous customer service really tanks this place.

Walking in I had this eerie feeling for some reason. I'm not sure what it was. Maybe that the place was completely empty. They had a really good variety of different rolls. My table got a spider shrimp tempura, tiger shrimp roll and crunch crunch roll. Before the meal even started, the water tasted weird. I don't know how to discribe it but it just wasn't right. The batter on the shrimp was AMAZING. All the vegetables that came with it were just really... different. I tried all of them and they just were not for me. It was green beans, I believe maybe cucumber, MAYBE sweet potato rectangles and ONE pieces of broccoli. & only four pieces of shrimp. I would expect at least six pieces for an entree. I love love loved the tiger shrimp roll. It was quite a big roll, so I ate it with my hands. Tempura shrimp inside with crab and either salmon or tuna ontop. With spicy sauce drizzle. While the crunch crunch roll was my second choice, I was oddly disappointed.

I checked this place out because it got such great reviews here on Yelp, but have to admit that I was thoroughly disappointed. I ordered a specialty roll along with some sashimi. The roll had a nice light coating of tempura flakes, which other places tend to overdo, but overall was very bland. My sashimi was very poor. I asked for two orders each of tuna and mackerel. What came out where two tiny, very poorly cut, pieces of mackerel. They seemed dry, and did not have the bright, fresh flavor I usually expect from that fish. The tuna came out as 5 little cubes. The flavor of the tuna was OK, but the similarly poor cuts did not reflect well on the skill of the chef. With two pieces of mackerel and 5 pieces of tuna on my place, I was left wondering exactly constituted "two orders" of an item. The gyoza that I ordered at the beginning of my meal almost never came, and I had to specifically ask for them 3 times -- the final time being after my check was placed on the table -- before they finally arrived. When they did arrive, they were deep fried to an unappetizingly crunchy dark brown. Even the sauce, which was an unidentifiable pale liquid, was a let-down. Like I said, I went to Tokyo Sushi because of all of the great reviews here on Yelp. Maybe they were just having one of those random bad nights, but I don't think I'll be going back to find out.

2-stars: "Meh. I've experienced better." Tokyo Sushi & Grill in Royal Oak definitely brings some diverse taste to the area. However, they attempt to do too much: first off, there are far to many items on the menu, which would suggest the cook(s) are generally jack-of-all trades, but master of none... The location served both Japanese sushi, as well as Thai food. Great variety of choices, however not the best tasting of each. Not that I'm a big sushi snob, but I'm pretty sure that sushi chef's would not store different cuts of fish ON TOP of each other - this was the case at Tokyo Sushi & Grill. The interior and decor looked old and run-down --- I would easily visit a run-down location for great good, a.k.a. the "hole in the wall" places that have some of the best food... .but this was definitely not the the case here. There is supposedly a much better Japanese restaurant up the street (I believe more pricey as well), however their was an hour and forty minute wait, thus we ended up stumbling into this 2-star location... Best avoid unless you're absolutely starving and have nothing else suitable in the local area (which btw, has plenty of all sorts of foods).

I want to give this place 2.5 stars. It really teeters between A-OK and Meh. The sushi is actually pretty good. But the size of the restaurant compared to the staffing and sushi bar is a disconnect. There was one waitress and one sushi chef for the entire place. I felt bad for the waitress as she was hustling around not only taking care of every table but also handling every carry-out order that walked in (and there were 5 while we were there). It took forever to get our food because of only one chef, but once it was there - it was really good. The ambiance is very bland and there's no music or TV so it gets oddly quiet as people don't want to talk too loudly. Then the door has a chime that plays the Westminster Chimes every time someone walks through the door. It's honestly the only thing you hear while eating and enough to drive one batty. undecided if I will be back.

A frankly run down and cheap looking place two doors down from Gusoline Alley across from a parking garage. We had two different kinds of rolls and Pad Thai. They were good. The service was very slow, the waitresses' English skills were very poor, and the food came out at random times. They forgot an app. There are better places to spend your money on Asian food in Royal Oak.

If I could give less than one star, I would. Walked in to the restaurant and it smelled like rotting fish. Immediately turned around and left.

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night. When we arrived at 7:45, I must say I was a little worried that we were the only people in the restaurant. I was with 2 other friends and we ordered 6 rolls, and was happy to know that we got a 7th roll free! We decided to try the "Air Conditioning Roll" for our free roll because, WTH is an Air Conditioning roll? It was pretty simple actually, but tasty. It had cucumber, avocado and I believe scallions in it. We also ordered the following which were excellent: Spider roll, Veggie Tempura roll, Las Vegas Roll, chicken teryiaki roll, and the spicy tuna roll. The only roll we did not love was the yellow tail. The salad with ginger dressing was only OK as well, but the edamame was good - nothing out of the ordinary. Down side : no liquor license! Was looking forward to a drink with my dinner, but we just went next door afterwards instead. Our bill came to just under $50. Very happy with the prices, service and selection. We will be back.

After viewing the "menu" through Yelp, I determined a visit would be required to actually order (carry-out) and have any idea what I was about to receive. The atmosphere was pretty bland, but for a purist that may not matter. If you are after a particular ambiance, look elsewhere - say Ronin, or Little Tree Sushi. After reviewing the menu and making my selections I sat at the bar and enjoyed an ice water. This place does not serve any alcohol. The menu appears to be missing a page from it's alphabetical sequence, however when I asked, I was told the page didn't exist. So if you look at the menu attached through the URL on Yelp, good luck guessing what Rolls A-F are. Despite these aspects, and contrary to my expectations, for the money, I couldn't have asked for better Sushi. I ordered: Lion King, Tiger Shrimp, Yum Yum, & Bonsai. I would recommend each of these rolls, but will try something new on my next carry-out order!

Decided to do carryout during the week on a slow night. I tried Tokyo Sushi because they ran a livingsocial deal and sold sushi made with cooked chicken. My order consisted of Chicken Teriyaki Rolls, an Asparagus Roll, Tom Yum Soup, and Spring Rolls. It's kind of weird that they do both Japanese food and Thai food. I'm accustomed to a specialty restaurant having one genre of food. Needless to say, I was disappointed in the sushi rolls. Sushi: The Chicken Teriyaki Rolls were "eh" with the dry chicken that was portioned out. There was more cucumber or avocado (don't remember which) in the roll than chicken. The sticky rice was really sticky, but the roll nowhere near that of Sakana's Chicken Tempura Rolls. The asparagus rolls were large, but that was because of all the extra rice that was stuffed inside. That was a turn off- the seaweed wraps couldn't even be closed. Thai food: The tom yum soup and spring rolls were great. I was pleasantly surprised at the fresh veggies in the soup. The spring rolls were fried to perfection. Atmosphere: It was DEAD and 30 minutes to closing. The woman at the counter was rushing me to do my order and it was apparent she was ready to go home when she sent me out with items missing from my order. Parking is sparse and metered. If you go on a Thursday or weekend the meters are "Valet" for the bar next door. I wouldn't come here again, not the best sushi spot in the area although competitively priced.

My boyfriend and I LOVE sushi and eat it almost every time we go out. We recently moved to Royal Oak and have been excited to try all of the new sushi joints. This one, unfortunately, did not really deliver. First off, we should have realized something was off when we read the title of the menu - 'Tokyo Sushi / Authentic Thai Cuisine.' Uh-oh, right? But we were there and we didn't want to go to the 'bar' sushi joint down the street, so we decided to give it a go. No liquor license is a big bummer for me. The ambiance is pretty low - everything was clean, but that's the best I can say for it. Bright lights and kind of Coney Island feeling tables, except with little bamboo plants on them. The waitress was very sweet and helpful; she gave us suggestions and answered all of our questions, and went over our order with us to make sure we ordered everything correctly (I guess we looked like newbies?) I was excited to see saba, mackerel, on their menu, because it is my favorite and not every sushi place has it. Unfortunately they were out of it. The sushi was a little below average. It wasn't terrible, but the presentation was bad (strange for a place that has a poster with the words 'sushi - edible art' on the wall.) The rolls were just set on the plate flat with no drizzled sauce or artful arrangement. Additionally, the sushi itself had some temperature issues (cold spots) and some texture issues (too-crunchy veggies.) My boyfriend was very pleased with the flavor of his rolls (the sakura roll, especially) which was the only saving grace. I don't think we'll be back here - there are a LOT of sushi joints in the Royal Oak area and this one just isn't good enough to come back to. Get a liquor license, spice up the ambiance and presentation, and then we'll come back.

I like Tokyo Sushi. It's a chain of sushi places around the suburbs that has sushi, japanese food and Thai. I normally only get sushi. I went last night with a friend of mine. She's Japanese, but decided to try the thai dishes. She asked for it to be "thai spicy" as she's been to Thailand and likes it that way. The dish came out with almost no spice (I tried it.) I had sushi and it was just as good as any place in the area. I especially like the pumpkin tempura roll. I don't know how authentic it is, but it sure is delicious. This is a decent place if you want sushi. The atmosphere is bright and clean. The restaurant is large and there is never a wait. The food is pretty good and there is a variety. The staff is friendly.

If you're looking for carry-out sushi this place is pretty decent. They have sit-down but if I were going to go for sit-down there are a few other places around town I might go instead. I will say that they are very quick when you order take-out and I've never been disappointed when I've gotten home with my food.

I was in town visiting family- we went here on a Monday afternoon for lunch and the place was completely dead. Kinda sketch, but the food was SO GOOD. Sushi rolls were huge- i really liked everything we got...even the pumpkin rolls. The bowls of soup were also very large. My Bro got the spicy soup and it looked magical. I stuck with the veggie soup. Definitely worth a try!

Can't believe I ate there. It was 1:45 pm , I was on my way home and so hungry especially for sushi, I took a chance because I used to eat at the Birmingham location until they closed. Sashimi is average to poor - salmon was stringy, tuna was spongy, wasabi not flavorful. Furnishings of restaurant dark and dank. No music, no one there but me - should have been my clue! The waitress and chef argued in their native language. A customer even came in to complain that what he picked was not what he ordered. All in a very uncomfortable and pricey experience. $25 (bf tip)for 6 small sashimi, a California roll, cucumber salad and green tea. Next time I'll drive to my favorite sushi place - Kyoto's in Clawson.

I've been coming here for a year and a half, only a few times I can honesty say it wasn't good..I usually get the gang ped with fried tofu and its delicious! So, I've been here twice. Once, a week ago, and once, about 6 years ago. So if this place has been around for that long, you kind of know it has something going for it. Here's my two cents. -Big menu, lots of rolls. This means that it takes a while for first-timers to order, so be warned. -We came in about 1 hour to close, so the chef kind of rushed the waitress to take our order. Understandable, but he did it in kind of a rude manner, with a scowl on his face. Normally, I wouldn't care, but I don't like rude people, especially rude bosses. Plus our waitress was cute, so shame on him. -My yellowtail roll had a bone in it. Amateur chef. -Other rolls were good, and very filling. However, the "wow" factor wasn't really there. Honestly, the bone was a deal-breaker for me. I know that it happens every now and then, but for you to be around for so long and still make such a mistake? I'm not sure I'll be back. Also, they do not serve salad and miso with your meal, but some restaurants don't. Just FYI.

I loved this place the first time I dined here. The second time was underwhelming. The sushi chef and the waitress actually laughed at me and my friend trying to eat the gigantic vegetarian rolls we had ordered. This was very rude and poor customer service. Let's not get snobby over over-sized, over-sauced Americanized sushi. I'm going to eat it in more than one bite and maybe even use my hands. I'd exercise more decorum in a "fancy restaurant" but not here. Also, don't sneer at me when I order extra spicy mayo. You serve it, so let me buy it without an eyeroll. (Eye roll? Sounds like a cannibal's maki!) The food here is good. The vegetarian rolls are gigantic. Fresh ingredients, though, and tasty spicy mayo. The miso soup is decent. The sushi here is much better than at Little Tree, but not as polished as Ronin.

Behind main street lies Center Street, the less popular drag of Royal Oak. Tokyo Sushi is a hidden gem that offers a variety of sushi. Their claim to fame is their combo platter, which I call "the boat" since it is served in a boat-shaped platter. The boat includes rolls, tempura, and sashimi. It is perfect for two people (or one if you are HUNGRY!). One thing I'd warn against is the off-putting environment. Since it is never empty, it appears somewhat sketchy. It is typically pin-drop quiet in here, even when the sidewalks on Main Street are brimming. For some reason people don't consider going here. I suspect most of their customers are ones that spotted them after parking in the parking structure across the street. Food-wise, the sushi is average and fresh. The price is a good value and it's a great location where you can actually talk to your guests before the food comes out. If you're in the area and like sushi, this is one of the contenders. It's the bare-bones experience (hipsters need not apply) that hits the spot.

How does Tokyo have less stars than Ronin? God must be shaking his head right now. Granted not the "blow your socks off" sushi joint but certainly the best in RO and Ferndale. Their fast, never really busy, and you get what you pay for with the rolls. Ive never been dissapointed in quality, presentation or taste. The service is what it is. They speak limited English so I dont expect them to fall all over me. They do their job; seat me, feed me, bill me. Plus a big, and possibly unjustified pet peeve of mine is when a server sets a plate of sushi down in front of me and explains each roll. Yeah thanks Steve, I got it. So no english, no annoyance! Its worth a try. Like I said it wouldnt be my last sushi meal choice before death, but still warrants a swing through. They also have frequent dinner cards! Buy 10 rolls get 1 free!

I went twice, and both times had the Shrimp Tempura. The portion was huge. The price was reasonable and the quality was great. I haven't had sushi there yet.

Excellent and they are not as expensive as most Sushi places in the area. Love this place and the edamame peas are the best around.

Sushi Was Bad. I question its freshness by the fruit flies that were trying to surround me. They were poorly wrapped. It wasn't as cheap as people like to make. The person I was with ordered two rolls and I ordered two rolls. Both had water. Bill was 30 bones.

I highly recommend! TSG is small, but is full of a fresh selection of sushi that will satisfy. My most favorite, however, is the green tea!!! Great for a natural energy boost, cleansing, and/or great compliment to the cuisine. My only suggestion (hopefully) is for the restaurant to offer saki, although Japanese beer is available. Great local choice!

The mission was simple--A Valentines sushi gorge for two at a casual, comfortable and not sticker-shock givin' place in Metro Detroit. With the help of Yelp reviews, we gave Tokyo Sushi in Royal Oak a shot, precariously balancing our first Valentines Day as a couple on the laps of some place we'd never been because people on the Internet said it was good. I imagined we'd have a terrible time, get into a fight, and break up on the spot. Instead, it was the perfect choice (thanks, Yelpers!). Tokyo Sushi has a small, casual interior. Entertainment Tonight was playing on a couple of TVs, which was disconcerting, but I do love Jennifer Aniston's hair. The ginger dressing on the opening-course salad was not ginger-y. But our eyes (and bellies) remained moist in anticipation. The waitstaff was friendly, though they bumbled our order several times, needing gentle guidance on what we'd just requested. However, not a blip on the radar in terms of causing a bad night (or is that just love?) The sushi was great--full-flavor, great variety, good presentation. No one looked twice while the Mister and I wept from the grand amounts of wasabi we loaded on. Nearly 70 dollars later, you can trust we tried (a lot of) the rolls. The best was the spicy smoked salmon roll--the spicy sauce was super hot with actual flavor. In fact, it's all I can think about now. Damn! What a wonderful antidote to the yuppie life-sucking sushi lounge options in Detroit! I was really loath to risk sushi - it's usually the most expensive meal I get with the worst service - but this turned out to be one of my better dinners out. Probably as a Valentines Day special, our waitstaff handed us a $1 draw for Mega Millions, and wished us luck. Even if we don't win the lottery, I'll come back here for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing if the service issues were just glitches. I'll call it "research."

I am convinced that better sushi places exist in RO besides Tokyo and Little Tree. I would like to try Ronin Sushi, and then I will make an educated decision.

I was here last night with a friend of mine, and I really enjoyed it. My friend and I were going to go to this other sushi place, but they were too busy, so we went here instead, and I was really happy that we did. The edamame comes in a rather small bowl, but for $3 I can't complain. I got the tempura California roll and tuna nigiri, and it was a huge piece of incredibly fresh tuna with the perfect amount of wasabi on excellently prepared sushi rice. The tempura is pretty different from any other tempura I've had before, but that's good because it was very light and flaky. Yum. My friend got the spider roll and the Philadelphia roll, and he really seemed to like those a lot. The service was fast. It seemed like we ordered our sushi; the waitress put the order in; and then she brought it right back to us. The atmosphere isn't great, but that's okay because the sushi was great, and that's what we went there for. I'd go back in a second.

Sushi in Royal Oak. Praise the lord! This truly is a thanksgiving miracle. I was home and craving sushi this weekend. We walked by this restaurant earlier in the week and decided to take a chance. Upon walking into the small sushi restaurant I was overwhelmed with the smell of fish, not really a pleasant smell. We were told to sit wherever we wanted and were waited on right away. They gave us each a yummy green salad with homemade ginger dressing. We ordered beef tataki which was OK and three different rolls. We ate one roll that had eel on the outside and one roll with three different types of fish and avacado. The rolls were very good and extremely affordable compared to seattle prices. I would definitely come back here next time I'm in michigan.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Every. Single. Time I order carry out from here it is wrong. Always. Either the roll is messed up, things are missing, there is no soy sauce, or chopsticks in the bag. I always say I won't go back but I do because its the only place in walking distance to my school. When I do I kick myself for giving them my business since it is always wrong. I don't know how people actually like it. It's not even good sushi. Ronin has way better food and isn't that much more expensive.

I just went here for the first time yesterday afternoon. It was a very late lunch so there were only a few other diners. Service was great. My waitress was sweet and brought everything quickly. The miso was tasty and the salad dressing is very good. Lots of sesame flavor. I've forgotten the names of the rolls I got, the selection is HUGE!, but they were really good and tasted fresh. I would not hesitate to go again. I did take one star off because some people might not care for the decor/ambiance. It's an older shop and it is a bit run down. This didn't bother me, as I like to relax and not feel like I have to be on my behavior. It feels like a comfy neighborhood place.

You get what you pay for. I went late on a Tuesday night and was the only patron in the place...should have taken the hint. The staff was friendly but the food was not. The salmon sashimi was fishy. The tuna had no flavor whatsoever and the texture made me think it was thawed in a hurry just for me, as it had a watery, spongy feel. Nothing seemed fresh. Not appetizing. The california roll (a ground "crab" blend) was somewhat satisfying....but you should know I was really hungry at the time. Meh.

I've been here a few times now, and I can't say it's terrible, but it isn't spectacular either. The staff is friendly and the sushi is decent. The biggest reason I eat here with friends is because it's right next to the parking garage I use, so we always walk past it. This is just such an average place, with ho-hum food. It lands smack dab in the middle between snobbish sushi and sushi platters from Meijer. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Their chopsticks are terrible though and it can get kind of dead in there, and you could end up eating with only one other patron. It's almost like somebody saw how packed boring coney islands are and said "I wonder if that format transfers to sushi?" Ehh.

My boyfriend brought me here cuz he knows I've never been and he knows that my goal is to scour the Metro for that ultimate sushi place. Its good that I tried this place. Now I know to never go back here again. We went there on a Tuesday probably around 5 pm. There was a seemingly sweet old lady that greeted and seated us. And first thing that really bothered me and was an instant bad sign was the nasty used dirty sushi menu that she handed to me. Considering that this restaurant is located in Royal Oak, that was very cheap and low. If she was really concerned about saving trees, FINE! but I think she was just plainly being cheap. The menu was covered in grease and avocado stains. It was disgusting and sad. I moved on and decided to order. I ordered the crunchy rolls. I think it was crunchy tempura. When it was served, immediately, I was disappointed. Any sushi place that serves me with ginormous sushi is an instant thumbs down in my book. The rolls are about 2.5 inches wide. They were flat but very wide for my mouth. I dont know about you but I like to be able to put the whole 1 roll in my mouth at once. I tried very hard to eat this gigantic roll at once but I was just failing. All the rolls fell apart each time I took a bite. So I was literally eating half of it in crumbs. It was not a pretty sushi dining experience. I immediately wanted to leave right then and there. Although my boyfriend really loved his Yakisoba. But we are never coming back to this place!!

I like this place and have been going here for years. They serve really terrific sushi with a great presentation, green tea out of nice ceramic mugs, and they're generous on the seaweed and real chunks of tofu in their miso soup. I also love the strict but sweet Japanese woman who works here. She takes no crap, but she makes me feel like I'm being taken care of by my grammy. Their booths may need a little patching, and it's not a posh, trendy, upscale, or glamorous setting -- so if you're looking for someplace where the Victoria Beckams of the world go, try Ronin (blah). I just want some good sushi in my belly, and that's precisely what Tokyo Sushi does.

Whenever my husband and I feel like sushi Tokyo Sushi in Royal Oak is our first thought. We have been there numerous times and have never been disappointed with their selection or food quality. The ambience is quiet and that's what we like. They have a huge selection of different foods and anything we've tried has always been wonderful! The service is great and attentive as well!

Wasn't impressed with my visit on Friday Night. They weren't particularly busy, which was nice (though telling) and the server was quite attentive. Soda was served in cans, which I always find to be classless at a restaurant. Silly, maybe, but it's one of those things. The place also had fruit flies, which is a major put off. Yuck. Had to swat them away from our food. Speaking of the food, my fiance and I always order a large variety of things and our visit to Tokyo Sushi was no different... we had the agedashi tofu (which was half as small as what every other place we've been to serves for the same price), Gyoza, Tofu and Vegetable tempura, several types of sushi and my fiance had noodles. The noodle serving was also small compared to other places in the area and my fiance commented that he was amazed at how tasteless it was. Sushi tasted okay but was not rolled well and thus was sloppy. Tempura was good, but it's hard to mess up tempura, I would think. All in all, food was ok, but not great, and what normally runs us about 40 bucks elsewhere was over $50. We won't go back. There's far better options in the area.

Looking for sushi on the cheap? This is it. The customer service is good and they seem generally concerned. Don't expect this to be the best sushi you've ever had or for that matter even good sushi/sashimi. For $14, they have lunch boat that includes tempura, sashimi, california rolls and more. The ginger dressing on the salad is a bit too watered down. On a side not, there are literally like 5 menus: a thai menu, a sushi menu, chinese and more. It's possible that they have an incredible thai food, but i have no idea.

(2)James L.

(4)Jerrad R.

Really comfy environs, super friendly staff, good sushi for reasonable price. I'm no sushi connoisseur, so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that I just don't like paying a fortune for sushi. It makes me mad. The range in sushi prices between restaurants can be staggering, and so, given the range, I almost always opt for those whose prices seem to me reasonable. Tokyo Sushi, in the context of Royal Oak sushi joints, fits that bill. The sushi is good (I usually stick to the salmon and tuna, sometimes yellowtail), their eel is really good, and their gyoza is a pretty tasty appetizer. The salad is a little underwhelming but it has a nice house dressing. Miso soup is good. The interior feels more like a mom and pop's café than a shmancy to-do, which I like. I've never not been greeted with smiles and welcomes, and ushered into one of their comfy booths. Also, the owner or some employees (or whoever is in control of the TV) seems to like watching hockey as much as most other Canadians. If there's a game on, it'll be up on the TVs, and frequently an employee or two are craning their necks to check out a few plays. This is a good place to go for a nice lunch without getting dressed up or spending a week's worth of grocery money.

(4)Chris V.
C approved!
(4)Matt K.
(2)Abigail M.
(2)Rosie E.
(1)Joe T.
(4)Melissa T.
Love this place! Service is great, sushi is yummy. The only downfall is it's not a place for a date night, no alcohol ;(
(4)Angela G.
Adventurous sushi at a great price! Loved meeting or going with small groups of friends who wanted a sushi meal at a fair price.
(3)Lauren G.

(1)Manda B.

(1)Jenny S.
The service is really good! Everyone is friendly. I love the spider roll and California roll. The dining place is very clean. This is the best sushi restaurant I've ever been to!
(5)Andrew Y.

Their Teriyaki Beef is tough and chewy ; Godzilla tuna roll is mediocre.. Service is hurried

Best sushi better then the harbor in Baltimore maryland! the shrimp tempura is the best iv ever had! not only is the sushi GREAT the chicken pai thai is GReat too! by far my favorite place to grab diner on a friday night!
(5)Victoria M.
Amazing Thai food! So spicy, saucy, and delicious. It was even good reheated. I'm giving 4 stars because I ordered for pick up and when I got there had to re-order and wait for food.

(4)Jessica C.
If you're looking for carry-out sushi this place is pretty decent. They have sit-down but if I were going to go for sit-down there are a few other places around town I might go instead. I will say that they are very quick when you order take-out and I've never been disappointed when I've gotten home with my food.
(3)Ali W.

I just ate there today around 4pm and it was probably the best experience I've had! Definitely would recommend this place to anyone and try the gang ped if you've never had it!! Yum!!

Just FYI.

Great place to come for a quick sushi bite. It tastes exactly like ronin but you dont pay double just for the atmosphere! I love the cucumber avo rolls. always freshly made
(4)Valya K.

(4)Brent G.
I love this place the staff is nice and the foo is priced accurately. I have never had a bad meal here or gotten sick so i think that's positive considering i have been eating here for five years now.

(4)Rhonda L.
I went twice, and both times had the Shrimp Tempura. The portion was huge. The price was reasonable and the quality was great. I haven't had sushi there yet.
(5)Dan P.
Excellent and they are not as expensive as most Sushi places in the area. Love this place and the edamame peas are the best around.
(4)Jessica S.

(1)Christine B.
(4)Mitch M.
Meh.
(1)Jake A.
(3)Mir B.
(1)Myrtle M.
(5)Laura F.
(5)Raphie B.
(1)Scott M.
