Second visit to this location only went here because chipotle next door had a line out the door. (Another review said the same thing-owners pay attention!) The concept is good but the metrics (and/or training) for portion control slow down the service to the point that it's almost not worth going there. Food review: Cobb salad was good. But would have been better with the dressing which the server forgot to give me. At 2 pm in the afternoon when there was no one else in line. And what's with all the plastic? Plastic utensils, plastic carry out cartons, plastic bags to put them in??? Many restaurants are switching to paper containers for carry out because they work well for short term storage- basically the trip from the store to my office.

No I have not been back for another meal. At the Ann Arbor Michigan location and this location I have waited in line too long and I get workers that can not make a salad like I have had in the past and I never get the points toward free food. When the owner is not at the restaurants the food is not the same and the soup is like water.

My first visit. I ordered a big mini salad - or something like that. Call it a medium size. I wanted it to go. My salad choice included 4 toppings and I added a $3.+ piece of salmon on top. Being a control freak, I wanted to put the dressing on myself. I asked the salad maker to put the dressing on the side. So, I get back to my office, hungry, and open up my salad. Not only was it missing the dressing, but only 3 of the 4 toppings made it on the salad. I didn't find the lettuce off-putting like some of the other reviewers; however, the olives tasted tinny and the tomatoes were flavorless almost like they were once frozen. I really wanted to like this place. I'm chalking it off to a rather expensive bad experience. Right now I'd say I won't go back but I'm a salad person and I like the concept. After my tempter cooled a bit I called the store and asked to speak to the manager to give them a bit constructive feedback. The "manager' said, rather insincerely, and several times, "I'm sorry". Well, yeah, me too. She then said "well, if you come back we would remake it". Um, not when my office is 10 miles away. What I hoped for them to say was - let me take your name and give you a small consideration on your next visit. Dear Franchise Owner: please note!

The salads here are pretty decent, you can select one of their already designed salads or create your own. The downside is that you can only chose from spinach, romaine or iceberg (gross) so there's no mixed greens of any sort. There is an abundance of toppings to chose from, hence the problem! You can only pick 4 for a small salad, which is rather large by the way. If you want more than 4 toppings it is extra $$, and for a salad that's already damn near $9 it can get expensive fast. Today I noticed a sign hanging up stating that they increased their prices by 3% due to the minimum wage increase, that's pretty ridiculous considering how much they already charge. I guess that's why there's always no one in here and a line out the door at Chipolte!

Horrible service, I waked in and waited for about 5 minutes before someone and came out of the back the employee that came out had a tray in his hand out it down and said oh what do you want

Food is okay service is SUPER slow! They are super expensive too. I went there today because Chipotle's line was all the way to the door. Honestly I should have stayed at Chipotle because there were 2 people in front of me in line and by the time I got my order at Big Salad I would have gotten my burrito bowl at Chipotle.

Big disappointment. Where's my dressing and avocado dude. This bread sucks. Seriously this is like that store bought par baked white bread that your supposed to take home and season and bake, only they skipped that step and built my caprese sandwich on it, which was sad indeed, 3 basil leaves, 3 tomato slices and 3 slices of cheese on flavorless white bread. The employees must not be used to people just ordering things the way they're listed on the menu because the guy seemed really confused. me: "I'll take a cobb salad and caprese sandwich to go" employee of the month: "would you like everything on that?" me: "Yes please" I come back from the bathroom Employee of the month: "would you like turkey on that?" me: "yes everything it comes with" E of the M: "would you like bacon on that?" me, turning to read the description again: " yes I'll have it like it reads, turkey, bacon, avocado, .......etc..." E of the M: 'would you like the champagne vinaigrette or a different dressing I'm not even kidding. Finally we agree to put the dressing on the side. Get home, guess what? No dressing or avocado. Really dude? Oh yeah, where's my roll?

Lettuce was wilted and slimy. Felt as though someone took a bite of a salad, chewed it up, and spit it back out. The price is on the high side ($22 for two salads) but would be acceptable if the food tasted good. It doesn't. I ate mine, but my girlfriend took two bites and threw it away. If I had ate in, I would've asked for a refund. Don't go here. It's a few miles south, but if you're in the Royal Oak area and want a salad, consider the salad bar at Hollywood Market. Much fresher and better tasting ingredients. About the same price, but bigger portions.

With hindsight I probably would not go here. But, nonetheless, I did. So, this is supposed to be like a Qdoba, Chipotle type-thing, but with salad. It is not a bad idea at the core...but it has to be worth it and it totally was not. The ingredients seemed fresh enough, but they way they prepared the salad was a little strange. They took what looked like two pizza cutters stuck together and mashed the salad. It mixed the salad but in the process bruised all the lettuce :( The real kicker was the cost..$20 for 2 salads that were not even that great. They gave a free "warm roll" that lacked any flavor and was very dry. Definitely will not be coming back any time soon.

We eat here every other week or so, usually on a weekend. The pluses: tasty salads, very good soups, many options for vegetarians/vegans. We've never once encountered the problems I've read on other reviews here (wilted lettuce, etc). The minuses: the breads are disappointing - the rolls and sandwich breads are a half step above Wonder bread. The music is always way too loud for conversation, though the people behind the counter will turn it down if asked. They only turn it down a bit.

I used to love this place. Ate here at least once a week. The staff used to be so nice and friendly. I probably won't be back after today. The girl acted like I was putting her out to order a salad. Then she dumped a bottle of dressing. When I told her to stop. She said it's just the way they serve it. Ordered an ice tea - the dispenser was empty. Just a really bad experience!

I read all of the negative reviews about this place and almost didn't go. However, I'm glad I did. People like to complain and are far too picky. According to the narratives here, you'd think you get a bowl of wilted lettuce. That's not the case. The service was friendly and prompt, and my salad was delicious. And huge. I had some sort of Alaskan salad with wasabi dressing and crab, and it was quite tasty and filling. The atmosphere is rather basic, a tad bland perhaps, for dining in, but it's clean and relatively comfortable. I had water to drink, and the cup I received was quite small, but it wasn't enough to sour my experience. This is my first review and I think people relish the opportunity to whine. I find it hard to believe that so many customers had such terrible meals here. Mine, and my friends', were just fine.
(3)Mike D.
I really like the salads but the prices are quite high. You're better off buying your own ingredients and making a salad at home.
(3)Abigail S.
I only went to this place because I had a gift card and was trying to get rid of clutter in my wallet. I ate around 2pm...The concept is good but the finished product is mediocre at best. I ordered a Greek salad without the tomatoes in a wrap. The employee asked what I wanted instead and I decided upon cucumbers. I asked to add chicken and on a honey wheat wrap. As the other reviews indicate they put a ton of dressing on making it more like a soup. I also ordered a tea but the unsweetened was out and the sweetened was with artificial sweetener which tasted awful. I politely asked if more was available and the employee was rude saying she'd have to brew more....as if it was't her job. I ended just getting water as the lemonade was out as well. My wrap was so messy I used a small forest to wipe everything up, and spit out chunks of the chicken that was hard and nasty...I ended up reaching across the counter to get a fork as the employees were MIA. I won't be back the wrap was nothing special and honey wheat had a odd aftertaste.

My boyfriend went out and picked up our food for us. He was gone for a lonnnnnnng time. Based on the reviews I'm assuming this is because they are slow. When he got home I was surprised by how small the salad was for a place that is called The Big Salad. I didn't like how everything was chopped into tiny pieces. I got the Cobb salad and for the most part all I could find in my salad was lettuce with the occasional turkey or bacon bit. Though they were few and far between. The picture on the website of that same salad was a very false representation of what I actually got. I also got the Caprese sandwich. Basil, tomato and mozzarella. The bread was blah, but the mozzarella was good. Overall it didn't have much flavor and was a let down. In the end I'm afraid it was too expensive and not worth the price. I was pretty bummed too, because I was excited to try it.

This place is so bad it inspired me to login to a long forgotten Yelp account and pile on one more single star rating. There is not a single redeeming quality to this awful franchise. Had I not already purchased a Groupon for this place I probably would have just turned around after walking in. In no particular order: 1) The food is bad. Big bowl of lousy iceberg lettuce sprinkled with a stingy amount of boring and not fresh toppings. Kroger has fresher, higher quality salads in their pre-made food section. My wife just ordered a better salad through her school's cafeteria. Imagine a Big Boy salad bar that has been under the heat lamps for 16 hours but instead of putting on the amount of toppings you want, you put on way less. That's what a Big Salad tastes like. 2) The staff complain openly in front of customers. 3) The food prep area is a filthy mess. There are piles of used prep bowls stacked everywhere and lettuce and other veggies strewn on every horizontal surface. 4) It's slow. If you are going to serve me a really bad meal it should be at least be fast. That's why people buy those Taquito things on the hot rollers at the gas station--its bad but really fast. If the Big Salad served those things they'd have to first go in the back to get them, then turn the heat roller on, then put the frozen Taquito thing on the roller, then start helping the next customer, then....... 5) The online menu isn't correct. This is especially irritating since that's was what I looked at to determine if I was going to even get the Groupon in the first place. What would have been $13 for 2 salads turned out to be $20. The unhappy woman behind the counter said she'd tell "them" about the problem. "Them" in this case are the people who don't know anything about food or how to run a business. How can you neglect to update your website when you change the store menu? 6) Its expensive. $10 is not a reasonable amount for a 75 cent pile of not fresh iceberg lettuce. I'm assuming they are skimping on fresh ingredients to try and cost save their way out of their inevitable demise. Overall, terrible. This space would better server the community as another Woodward Ave. mattress shop or an Edible Arrangements.

Owner must never have had a salad. Nothing fresh. If Gordon Food Service had salad in a can it would be a huge improvement. Pre chopped, pre sliced, pre pared. Even the avocado was peeled and shrink wrapped! More importantly, portions were meager and who uses iceberg lettuce in a $10 salad.
(1)Kari S.
Don't order online! Went to pick it up and they didn't have our order, they claimed this happens a lot. Ummmm, let me suggest you take this option off the website if it's a recurring problem. Food over priced and lacking, won't be back.
(1)Jennifer P.
This place is bad. I have been here 3 times and each experience has been progressively worse. The greens were not fresh. The sandwich bun was rock hard. The greek dressing was rancid. The staff was not friendly. And lastly, the portion sizes are smaller than the other location I frequent. Even if you LOVE salad, you're better off getting one at any chain restaurant .....even McDonalds. Do not let this location fool you, The Big Salad in Troy on Big Beaver & Rochester Rd is AWESOME! Go there instead!
(1)Lori D.
In my opinion, THE BIG SALAD is a BIG FLOP. I had never been and will NEVER go back. Here's why: 1) Way too expensive for lettuce and a few toppings. Over $10 for a sub-standard salad served cafeteria style is way too much. 2) Dressings had no flavor. I tried more than one. 3) The iceberg lettuce had brown edges like it had been there a few days and the spinach was wilted. 4) The 'Hot, Fresh, roll" tasted like cardboard, not hot, not fresh. 5) The WORST was the incessant, loud, highly annoying 'chopping' of the salads that the 1-3 employees were doing, sometimes all in unison, at the counter. It drove me NUTS! 6) Too hard to park.

I passed this place on my way to work everyday and just noticed the "NOW OPEN" sign. I made a mental note this morning of checking it out on my way home. I did not know, until I checked here on YELP!, this is somewhat of a "branch" and that there are at least two more in the area. (Sometimes, as Elmer Fudd would say, "ignorance is the best policy.") The place is in a "mini" strip mall that has VERY limited parking (on the East side of Woodward just South of 14 Mile Road). Fortunately for me, there were two cars backing up as I was pulling in. The place, though small (narrow and deep), is very cozy and elegantly furnished. After I got my order, I especially admire the uniqueness of the open-CORNERED tray. When I look at the wall menu (reminiscent of a Quizno's or a Jimmy John's), I nearly balked at the prices of a bowl of salad (I AM CHEAP so sue me! lol) -- 6.99 for the "no meat" variety to 8.49 for the ones served with meat. I have not had ANYTHING since my cup of copy that morning so I am starving! I decided to just "splurge" and at the same time be good to myself and order the meatless one. (Extra "toppings" ie, those not "originally" included in your salad, are .60 cent extra per topping). There is also an option to make your own salad. I was also intrigued by the Turkey RASPBERRY Sandwich (you can have a whole or half order) I decided to try it with my salad. So much for not having meat! Service was prompt and the server courteous. My salad was mixed in front of me and she even offered to "cut" it into smaller pieces. When I was served my order, I knew WHY the salad cost much -- there's a LOT of it in your plate. About the only time I had so much vegetables on one plate is ordering the House Salad at the Inn Season -- though this one, I will soon find out, is not as tasty. This should have been a three star review but the Turkey Raspberry Sandwich was quite tasty AND something to write home about! It ALONE deserves its own star in my book. The overall experience was modest though the bill was not -- $15.41 for a salad and sandwich sans beverage. Would I be back? Hard to say at this point. For a "fast food" salad -- is that oxymoron or what? HAHAHA! -- it is hard to get over the price per bowl so I would say no. On the other hand, that sandwich is really good! Hmmm... I guess you just have to see my check in's! :?P

Avoid this place at all costs. The lettuce in my salad was completely wilted and slimy, the portion was small (not that I ate it), and it was expensive. I don't know how the workers there could look at the food as acceptable when they presented it to me, but maybe they feared they would get in trouble if they didn't. Needless to say, I didn't eat the food, and I won't be back. I generally don't like to write negative reviews, but I don't want anyone wasting their money here.
(1)Pratheep S.
Pros: My wife likes it an eats there quite often. There must be at least one good dish. Cons: Pretty expensive for what you get - especially if they are trying to make it a pseudo-fast food joint. My biggest issue, however, is that the lettuce is ALWAYS soggy. I have been there 4 times, and this happened all 4 times. My standard Yelp disclaimer: I have a South Indian palate. I am naturally accustomed to spicier foods and less salt.
(1)Trish D.
After much anticipation, the BIG SALAD finally opened and left quite a bit to be desired. It WAS a salad. And it WAS big. Was it worth the price? Nope! Will I be back? Nope (not without a coupon or a deal)! The salad was large in size, wimpy on flavor. I went with my two kids (2 and 3 years old) and spent close to $25 which is outRAGEOUS. From the minute I arrived, I was made to feel like my presence was an inconvenience to the warm and fuzzy (snark) staff. "Sure you can have ham on that salad for your 3 year old, but it will cost you an additional $3." Ummm, no thanks. Good in theory, terrible in execution.
(2)Jodi R.
Overpriced, yes. However in the realm of fast food joints, or higher end fast food joints, the food here is better than most. I enjoy the Maurice salad and my daughter can eat the tiny bowl of mac 'n cheese (she's currently dealing with a dental appliance and this is the only thing she's been able to eat besides pancakes - everything else is soup/juices/smoothies). So I'm rating 3 stars because while we like the food, it is overpriced.
(3)Shawn W.
The Big Salad seems like a great idea - a big custom made salad for a healthy alternative to fast food. The problem is that it is way too expensive for what you get. It's not as if they use better ingredients than other places to justify the cost - in fact it seems as if iceberg, spinach, and romaine are the only greens choices. Some of the specialty salads don't even include that many ingredients. You could get a salad from Subway that costs less and has more ingredients. It costs almost $10 for a salad that is admittedly pretty big, but they could reduce the size and price a bit and it might be worthy of a return trip. The staff are a mixed bag - some are friendly and others look like they'd rather work someplace else. Bottom line - there better and cheaper places to get a good salad.
(2)Stuart J.
I enjoy the Maurice salad. A bit pricey, but tasteful. The guy who owns the franchise has about a 0 personality.
(4)E S.
This place is like a salad bar. It is about $10 dollars for a salad, it is usually really fresh. The salads are really big but they do skimp on the toppings a little. Good place to go if you're on a diet.
(4)Nikki B.
Too expensive, too little meat. The staff was friendly. My salad had a little Krab meat, carrots, edamame, onion, and tomato. Came out to 10 bucks.
(2)Sue H.
I love this place but their prices are way to expensive for their salads it is very fresh but they do seem like they need some better organization they always seem to be running behind called for a take out order for 5 salads 40 minutes before we were to pick up and still had to wait 15 more minutes they just need to have a better assembly line for making salads and also really need to lower their prices. 12 bricks for a salad with 6 items and one meat is a bit high
(3)Byron S.
sooo slow. dumb employees that can't remember order. took me over 20 minutes to get take out lunch. awful experience. Cob Salad had consistency of mush.
(1)Jennifer Z.
Big Salad...BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. We don't mind "paying" for good food, but this was downright gross. At least in carry-out form. Salads were like soggy coleslaw by the time we ate them, despite the fact that dressing was on the side. How does that happen? Gross. Spinach in the Asian Salad was wilted, there was a watery mess on the bottom of the Mediterranean Salad. Beans in 7-Bean Soup weren't cooked through. The guy making the salad was friendly and decently quick putting the order together, but omitted additional items I requested. Place is dead for a reason.
(1)Tim G.
Great, fresh options for a healthy meal after a busy day. Excellent selection of ingredients and salad suggestions. Wish they were open just a bit later in the evening.
(5)Stephanie O.
We tried this place because I see it every day on my way to work, and really liked the atmosphere. The employees were somewhat friendly. The prices were shocking, but decided to splurge. The salad was delicious! I love the way they chop it up for you, but way too expensive. I also ordered the Chicken Dumpling Soup, it was watery and bland, definitely not worth the outrageous price I had to pay for it! ($5.50 for 12 ounces!) My daughter did like the Chicken Noodle Soup. We could become regulars, but they need lower prices, so unfortunately, we won't be back :-(
