Excellent food, service, price. This was our first time here and the workers were great so personable. The price was great we had their Sunday buffet and it was all so good. We will be back for sure.

They said Spam & Eggs like your Grandma used to make. Being Filipino... I laughed & I told them that mine served hers with rice! OMG!!!! They made me some rice!!!!

This my go to place for breakfast in the area. Steve and his staff are great. Friendly atmosphere. The breakfast are great. I have never walked out the door hungry. I have had everything on their menu and have never been disappointed. Big fan of their corned beef hash and sausage gravy. You need to give this place a try.
(5)Kat L.
Been here 3 times and it's always been on point. Beef barley soup with just a little gristle (yum) in it so you know it's made in house. Had the corned beef the first time and it was delicious. But the second and third time I had something off the menu recommend by the owner called the dirty Devon. Sliced roast beef with grilled onions and mushrooms served with gravy. I think it's supposed to be served open face covered in the gravy but I get it on the side and dip it cause I usually don't have time to eat the whole thing. And omg it's fucking amazing!!!!! I feel like this could be the only thing they ever sell and still have a packed house lol. Oh and they seasoned fries tossed in salt and pepper are great. I'll probably be back in the next week. Oh and next time I'm ordering extra gravy and cheese to make my self a poutine! I think that should be on the menu lol

A local business revived - yet another solid restaurant in the area. Open less than a year, this restaurant is a nice diner just south of 13 Mile Road along Michigan's M-97 Highway. 1st off, the staff here did a wonderful job in service, and the owner was on hand to personally see to it that everyone was greeted and all their needs were met. Their menu is on news print, simple, but chocked full of whimsical choices. Found inside 4 pages, their breakfast offerings fill 2 pages, and spill onto a 3rd. For breakfast, I ordered the A12 Peek-a-boo eggs (2 slices of bread with the center cut out and your eggs fried inside). Select 3 items from the appropriate Tag Alongside list and you have a full breakfast. My 3 sides were hash browns, 3 slices of ham, and to go along with that, 3 slices of spam (ham & spam, they rhyme all the time!) Delivered on 2 plates, I enjoyed making the food disappear. I'll have to admit, I was nicely surprised this morning after arriving and finding 3 tables with dining patrons. I selected a table back and away from the windows, able to take in much of the restaurant from my vantage point. Adorning the walls were pictures of Detroit in the past - one of the Boblo boats, Detroit's famed train station in its heyday, Vernor's Street sign and iconic Gnome - all this and more, pleasant memories of the past. Also found up by the kitchen were items of use years ago - hand tabulation machines, a mini juke box, an old grocery scale, and others. Their electric bread slicer is purported to be the oldest of its kind, but is still put to daily use. Getting back to my dining experience, a group of people converged upon Old School Deli and ruined my tranquility. I ain't too smart, but there were 3 more people than I could count using all of my fingers, and they all seemed to fit around the large table near me (since this is old school, I suppose they were seated 'cafeteria style'). Perhaps my tranquility was replaced with a warmth easily felt whenever a departing patron rang the school bell on the way out the door. It slipped my mind to do so myself, so I'll do it now - ring, ring! Their parking lot could use a touch-up, but don't let that deter you from paying them a visit when they're open. I don't remember all of the details, but discounts are given to older folks and active duty military, and perhaps others. I'll return as a repeat customer.

This building has had a problem making a go of it for decades. Finally, something decent has taken over. Visually, it's not much. Very simple, nothing fancy. Our service was wonderful. We had a young lady who was sweet, talkative, with a nice personality. I had a corned beef sandwich (don't remember the actually name they gave it). It was very very good. It was better than most of the ones around town. Nice job. I had onion rings also. They weren't awesome, but they WERE homemade. They weren't terrible either, just nothing special. I'd recommend giving this place a shot and I hope they succeed in reviving this building...once called The Dice Restaurant back in the 80s.

Just tried this place, and I cannot recommend it enough! Eggs Benedict was fantastic, city fried chicken and eggs was a hit. The options are boundless and the service was on point! We will be making this our regular stop for breakfast : ) excited to try it for dinner.

Ok..rated it a 1 because thats as low as I can go. Kinda cute inside and service was ok. But The eggs benedict was the worse I ever had. First..the homemade english muffin though a poss good idea if executed correctly would be good however..it was too light and soft..no resistance so sauce made it soggy. They used grizzly old tasting ham instead of canadian bacon. The sauce did not taste like hollondase sauce i have ever tasted..in any event..not good. The side of bacon was 2nd grade old tasting and tough and the side of ham was grizzly and old tasting low quality ham. Coffee was very weak and old also.
(1)Kelly M.
Very impressed by the old style decor, friendly staff! Dragged the bf out for breakfast, he loved the homemade hash browns! I liked how you could build your own breakfast although I don't do well with too many choices :/ Coffee was good! love trying out the small diners rather than the big chains! We will be back!

Server: great our server was very friendly. Ambiance: old diner style. The food: Pretty good! I had the school bus wheel that has corned beef and pastrami and he had the pledge of elegance but they were out of pastrami so it only had corned beef on it and both were really good. The meet to bread ratio was perfect. The fried mushrooms were tasty to the batter was not over powering. I had a side of fries and they were good not to greasy. I only gave 3 stars because they were out of a lot of stuff on the menu. I will try again later and hopefully they have the pastrami.

I've been here a couple times and really enjoy the food and the environment here. I love that our server (Cindy? I hope I have that correct) remembers me every time. My son actually asks his grandparents to take him here when he's at their house on the weekend and gets mad when I go without him. He likes the pancakes. I tried them one visit - now I understand. I usually order the Pledge of Allegiance Freshman size. Delicious. And I'm not really a sandwich girl. My s/o usually has to order extra meat on everything - this was one time he didn't. I wish they were open a little later as I don't get much time to visit with the earlier hours, but I'm glad I can get here when I do. The menu is HUGE too - seriously, you would be hard pressed to not find something you like on it. On the back, they even tell you that if you are interested in seeing something on the menu to talk to them about it - or if you have a recipe to share. One thing I have to point out is that service is always top-notch, something seriously lacking these days in many places. I guess that's why it's called "Old School Deli".

My husband and I had been meaning to give this restaurant a try since reading the great reviews on Yelp. So glad we stopped for breakfast today. Fresh homemade hash browns and breads. The pancakes were delicious. Everything was really good. Portions are very generous too. Love all of the options available for breakfast. The service was wonderful and very friendly. The owner, Steve, sat down to visit with us. That made the experience all the better. Great that the diner serves Michigan products. We're definitely coming back. Looking forward to trying lunch and dinner.

Today I ordered carry out for the first time. When I got the food home every thing I ordered was perfect, cooked exactly right. The staff was great as usual. Great breakfast, going to try dinner next.
(5)Becca S.
There is nothing but good things to say about Old School. Every single meal I've had here has been fantastic! The sandwiches are HUGE, the corned beef hash is the best I've ever had, and the home cooked dinners are better than any restaurant's I've been to. Steve the owner is super friendly, and a good soul. He's extremely passionate about his food, the business, and his patrons; and you will never find him MIA, he's always in the building talking to his guests or helping in the kitchen. Old School beats any family owned restuarant in the area!

Love my corn beef sandwich Came all the way from California just to get a corn beef sandwich and the food was GOOD but cashiers attitude sucks smh I don't understand why people take jobs they are not happy with...

i believe in giving stars based on the caliber of the place. this place is a diner. and it's a damn fine one at that. My boyfriend and i came here for lunch and after the service and food we were shocked that the place wasn't packed. i ordered Eggs Benedict, it's my favorite, i eat it all the time. there was nothing frilly about this one, no special chipotle hollandaise or bizarre variation that hipster brunch places love to give. this was your basic Benedict and it was beautiful! the eggs were PERFECT. i have spend a pretty penny at a variety of brunch places on a Benedict where the eggs were too runny or too done. i don't send things back usually so i just get a little bummed out. i wanted to hug the cook. this fine meal came with an option of 3 (count em 3) sides. i chose fruit, pancakes, and grits. the pancakes were fantastic! as someone with a terrible sense of smell, the pancakes were all i could smell as soon as the waitress set down the plate. the only thing that i want to see more in restaurants is real maple syrup, but it doesn't usually show up that often.... i'm still looking my boyfriend got the devon something.. roast beef, mushrooms, green peppers, gravy on a hoagie bun, he said it was really good. the fries that came with it were seasoned really well, and just fine on their own with out the help of condiments. I will say as well the owner was a delight, he came over and explained the menu, and even gave us a sample of the buffalo chicken soup! which was like a soup version of the dip that you see at parties! so good!! This is as good as a diner gets.

I want to like this place, I really, truly do. I've now been here four times, and each time, I've disliked it more. Pros: 1.Their sandwiches are decent. There are tons of better delis in the metro area though. 2.The service is good. The waitresses are always friendly. 3.Banana pancakes are amazing. I will probably keep coming back here strictly for those. 4.The French fries and onion rings are really good too. Cons: 1.The pricing is ridiculous. Almost $7 for a chicken salad sandwich. It was basically a mayonnaise sandwich. I couldn't tell there was chicken, celery, or anything else it it. Just mayonnaise, and way too much of it. 2. They always seem to be out of everything. The menu is huge, with a lot of things that sound great, but they never have any of it. For instance: the first time I went there, I saw on the menu they have bread pudding and monkey bread. My friend and I wanted to try them. The waitress told us they've never had those there. Ever. Why the hell is it on the menu then? I've also ordered baked beans twice now, and both times they didn't have any. 3. False information: their "fresh fruit" is simply canned pineapples that they pour in a bowl for you, syrup and all. Disgusting. Their menu states that the coleslaw is shredded daily...it looked grey and tasted like nasty bagged coleslaw. 4. If it's busy, expect to have missing items with your order. Twice for breakfast, everyone at our table had something in their order missing: toast, bacon, sausage, etc. It's very annoying. This place has potential, but it doesn't seem to be trying very hard. All of the five star reviews are a bit misleading. Maybe if they change their menu to things they actually have on a regular basis, and add actual fresh fruit instead of canned crap, it would be better.

Been eating here since it first opened. Never had a bad meal and you don't walk away hungry. Love the breakfast where you can choose 4 items from an extensive menu. A few months ago they starting staying open for dinner. The open face hot turkey sandwich is awesome. On Monday they have a Chicken breast dinner. Two gigantic breasts, enough to take home one. The owner and wait staff are pleasant and the place is clean. Several restaurants have failed at this location. Hope t;his is the exception.
(5)Michelle C.
Great homemade food! Awesome prices! Fabulous staff. The owner takes great pride in his business. I will definitely be back! Highly recommended!!

I HIGHLY recommend this place on the east side of Detroit, in Roseville, on Groesbeck just south of 13 mile. We all just got back from here, the sandwiches were really, really good, and the omelets were outstanding! The onion rings and the fries were very good, also. Everything is homemade, and you can tell. The service is great, also! Will definitely be going back. UPDATE: 8-23-14: Ate here again, this time for breakfast. Excellence again! The biscuits and gravy were really, really good according to Matt, and I can vouch for him (he gave me a taste...yum).This place is kind of easy to miss if you're just driving down Groesbeck, but worth going out of your way for.

I live right up the road from this place and drive by it on a daily basis. For the last two years there had been a "COMING SOON!" sign and I was starting to think the place would never open. Now that it has I will honestly say the wait was totally worth it. The place looks amazing on the inside. I had never been in there before it became the Old School Deli as it had been vacant for about 6 years. From what I had heard they basically gutted and remodeled the entire thing because it was so out of code. Yes they took their time, but it shows. The food was great and I like the way they have their menu set up for breakfast items. You basically pick the main item (for me it was Eggs Benedict) and then you get to pick from a long list of "Tag Alongs" (sides) to go with it. They set it up this way because not all people like the standard hashbrowns and toast that come with most breakfast dishes. You get a lot for you buck too. I think it was around $7 for the Benedict and you got to pick three sides that included juice, fruit, toast, hashbrowns, pancakes, bacon, sausage, spam (yes spam) and much more. I opted for toast, pancakes and the spam only because it had been 20+ years since I last had it and where else could I go outside of Hawaii that had spam on the menu? The Eggs Benedict were amazing. The eggs were poached perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was creamy and smooth. The star of the dish though was the english muffin. They are handmade in house much like the rest of the menu and were rich and buttery and had a crunch to the exterior, but were soft and chewy on the inside. They are nothing like you would expect the standard english muffin to be. The pancakes had to be some of the fluffiest pancakes I have ever had and had a hint of vanilla taste to them. Ah and then there was the spam. Like I said it had been over 20 years since my last encounter with this loaf style meat product and I must say I actually liked it. It was fried up and tasted like a ham/bacon hybrid. The service was very good and our drinks never were empty and Steve the owner seems like a really nice and down to Earth kind of guy. He came by our table thanking us for coming in and told us about the restaurant and the menu. I like the fact that they try to source as much of their stuff from Michigan based companies too as it shows they care about the local economy which makes me want to support them even more. Another great thing about the place is that if you eat there on your Birthday you get your meal at the cost of what minimum wage was the year of your birth. One guy came in while were were there excited to get his $0.30 meal. All in all everything was great and I think we have found our new favorite breakfast joint to go to on the weekends.

Came here for breakfest, ordered poched eggs in a cup when i got them they were way over done almost rubbery, prices were also high, we also met the owner steve he seems like a nice guy but defiently needs better kicthen help. Probably wont be goin gn back

This place is great. The first time I walked in here I felt like a regular. The staff is really friendly the food is delicious and reasonably priced. If your feeling adventurous when they ask for your order tell them "dealers choice" and enjoy the surprise. There is always specials so there always seems to be something new to try. Great spot, I'm glad I stumbled on it.

Kudos to my fellow Yelpers for birddogging this place, :) ... probably wouldn't have stopped in but for the reviews & it definitely would have been my loss! Located just south of Macomb County's own version of the Bermuda Triangle, ie where Groesbeck, Utica Rd. and 13 Mile all kinda' converge, OSD is a HUGE improvement over what's occupied that location since the days it was the Dice ... remember them days? You'll love the new interior ... spacious, comfortable & appropriately nostalgic. The menu concept (for breakfast) is unique, different and may take a moment to master, but you'll see the logic in what Steve (owner) is trying to do & appreciate it. Instead of OSD telling you what you're gonna' have with your meal, you're able to select your sides (ie, tag along's) and customize your breakfast from several long selection lists that more than cover all the bases. I loved the option of having a side of cottage cheese, a cup of fruit, glass of juice, et... rather than more traditional offerings. Some guys (and gals, ;) open a restaurant just to make a living, other guys are true "restaurateurs" ... Steve at OSD is "restaurateur" in the true sense of the word and you can see the passion in everything they do ... things like taking the time & effort to make their own pastrami, :). I had the city chicken/country fried steak-n-eggs (right! Remember "city-chicken?") with homemade gravy & it was superb. Many menu items took me back to a simpler time & there's more than a few OSD sandwiches and entrees in my future, lol. Online ordering, senior/active duty military discounts, catering, fund raisers, open early for breakfast/lunch/dinner, a fun/unique/creative menu for everyone to enjoy ... Old School Deli really is "old school", :). Yeah, I liked it, ;) ... don't forget to "ring" the bell on your way out!
(5)Ziggy G.
Amazing soups. The potato, beef barley and the buffalo chicken soups are great. I still haven't ordered anything off the normal menu; because, the daily specials always steal my appetite before I even open the menu.
(5)Jim K.
Yelp reviewers must be easy graders. Where were you when I took organic chemistry? I got the reuben: the cook omitted the sauerkraut and Russian dressing and used mozzarella instead of Swiss cheese. There aren't many more ways to mess up a reuben than that. The icing on the cake was the evil eye the cook shot me when the waitress asked for the missing ingredients.
(2)Anthony E.
All there meats meats are made in house. Everything is fresh and good size portions not to mention a good price
(5)Jake L.
They keep it simple, If you want a great sandwich this is the place to go. The Ruben is my Fav!

Since my first review I have been to the Old School a few more times. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars now. The following is what I like and what has me downgrading my initial review. Service is friendly and has gotten quicker than on our first visit. The owner is a treat, and if he's not busy you will find him at your table asking how the food is, or explaining the menu to newbies. Nice touch! The decor is fun, and the place is clean. I always like being able to see the cooking area, as it reassures me of the care one takes with food preparation. I've now had breakfast here twice, and it needs work. The bacon was cheap, with a lot of fat, and was undercooked, therefore greasy. Ugh. I did try the pancakes on my son's plate, and they were tasty. I asked for dry toast, it came buttered. My spouse ordered the corned beef hash, thinking it would probably be homemade here and therefore yummy. The meat was chewy(!) and the hash greasy. He was very disappointed, as he was remembering corned beef hash that was wonderful (we later decided that was at Emerson's on the Grill in Mt. Clemens-shameless plug for a place we like a lot). DH left almost all the meat on his plate. On my last visit, I again ordered the corned beef/pastrami sandwich that had me so thrilled on my first trip here. I asked for it without the dressing, and a side of mustard. The first time out, it had the dressing on it, and the server promptly offered to return it to the kitchen. When the new sandwich arrived, it was really greasy, from the bun to the meat-nowhere near the delectable treat I remembered. My friend on that visit had a ham sandwich she thought was amazing, including the bread that they use here. She ate the entire thing, which was lots of meat! They also gave her a side of horseradish, which made her day. I have introduced some friends and family to this joint, and plan to bring another with me next week. I sure hope that visit surpasses my last two, or I'll start looking for another breakfast/lunch joint to fill my cravings.

Thanks to fellow Yelpers I decided to try this place for breakfast. Glad we did. It was my friends birthday and the owner came over to welcome us and suggested we read through the entire menu..even the back. Well to our surprise, my friends breakfast price was adjusted to what minimum wage was back in the day..so steak n eggs for $1.30! (Birthday Promo) great idea! Already made plans to meet friends there this week! Btw food was good too!
