Had a lovely bartender that actually engaged me in conversation. Only had a drink and appetizer so can't comment on their menu. I did have the mussels that were tasty and a large portion. Lovely setting.

We went to Red's for restaurant week. We have never been there before. Food was ok...the bad part was waiting 2.5 HOURS for food. Absolutely ridiculous. Manager was wandering around the outskirts of the dining room avoiding eye contact with all customers. I know it's not his fault or the waiter's fault but that was WAY TOO long to be pretending it was ok. Everyone in the restaurant was in the same situation. Good luck with the rest of restaurant week not everyone will be as patient as us.

I had an opportunity to dine at Reds on the River right after Christmas and I was delighted to learn that the restaurant has maintained its service and quality levels over the years. I had my favorite Ahi Tuna Steak Dinner along with the French Onion Soup and this restaurant did not let me down. The dining room had an excellent ambiance and the server(s) checked on us routinely. I wanted to update this review and continue to give it 4 stars since my last review. This place is great during the summer when you get to dine outside and hear the Rogue River gush nearby.

A complete disappointment. Met a friend here for dinner on a Sunday night. We had planned for a 6:15 pm meeting (they close at 7) and I arrived at about that time. My friend was running a bit late so I ordered a glass of wine and an app (morrocan califlower, and it was amazing, best thing about meal). I mentioned the issue to the waitress. About 5 minutes later I over heard her telling the table near me that she needed to get their order to the kitchen because it was getting ready to close...it was 6:20...a full 40 minutes before they were to close. Friend arrived at 6:35 and found all the doors locked. They knew I was waiting on someone and it was 25 minutes before they closed. She eventually got in and sat down. We ordered about 5 minutes later. My food was just ok. Ordered steak burger and fries. Nothing special. My friend had lobster grilled cheese and soup and she loved it. Lots of big chunks of lobster. But the service was just kinda crappy. Seems like if you are open until 7, you are open until 7. Not 6:20. Just not the upscale experience you would expect for the price. Bummed.

I went here with my parents, it was very nice. Mother and I shared a beet salad, it had pistachio's and goat cheese, it rocked. Dad had half a roast chicken and french onion soup, I had some of both, they were tasty. Nice views too, such a nice day along the Rogue river.

I stopped in Rockford this afternoon on my way home from Kzoo; it's been quite a while since I've been, it was pouring rain, and a glass of wine sounded good before I did some window shopping. I stumbled on Red's, saw a covered outdoor patio and thought I'd have a glass of wine and a light lunch. The service was ok, though they appeared to be understaffed, there were 2 servers on the floor, one outside and one inside; both of them seemed like they wanted to be somewhere else. There was a third person, their runner, that seemed more attentive than either of the waitstaff. I generally do not like to eat at places where this is the configuration; if you are my waiter/waitress, then I expect that you will be walking me through my meal as well as delivering it and checking back to see how my experience is. As for the food, the French onion soup was an adequate portion, though a bit too salty. Id give it just an ok. They really need to get some different bread, just give me some straight up French or Italian or rye or something, I don't need what amounts to breakfast bread (cranberry walnut) or onion poppyseed bread, it's too heavy...ugh. The braised pork ravioli was good, though the portion was dinky, just 4 small ravioli. I'm glad I ordered the sauce on the side, it was good, but would have drown the pasta, there was so much of it. I passed on dessert, after watching the table next to me get theirs, it was clear that they don't make their sweets in-house. The wine list was ok, very yesterday Pinot noir centric, it would be nice if they had more malbec or other reds... This place is a bit expensive for what you get, the atmosphere is nice, the staff is a bit inattentive, and they need to 86 a few tvs. Would I go again? Maybe for drinks, but not for food. I'll stick with hotdogs on my next trip.
(2)William W.
Great food...offers a selection that is as interesting as it is good. Staff is fun and service is great. Drinks are intersting...ine list is unreal! There are some great places to eat in GR area and Reds is worth a trip to rockford.

we had dinner last night with friends from gun lake. greeters, service and food were what we had expected based on previous visits. all around excellence. keep up the good work.
(5)Ken M.
This was a nice venue overall, with delicious cocktails, great decor and ambience, a parking lot plus plenty of street parking in the area, and a very nice walking trail that goes right past it. We had an exceptionally nice meal of steaks and seafood along with really well made cocktails and a good wine list. I'd definitely recommend this place for a special occasion or just a nice Friday night out. The outdoor seating was perfect.

I have been going to Red's for many years, and am more than a little disappointed at my most recent visit. I was warned by a few friends that this place may be slipping in quality and service as compared to the last few years and I have to agree. First, the parking is inadequate and unprotected. Be prepared to watch a carload or two of non-diners take the last spot and leave while you have to park elsewhere and walk back. There was no valet during our recent visits although I have seen valet in the past. Second, the quality of the wait staff has declined. We were sat in a table by the window completely un-shielded by the sun. When we brought it up, we were informed that the awning had collapsed during the harsh winter and had not been replaced. We were not given the option to relocate. We were then more or less neglected by our harried waitress while we involuntarily did an impression of "lizard baking on a desert rock." After a while, we noted a few tables (of patrons that were seated after us) getting bread and butter while we had none. We then asked for some as our waitress had not been back. We were told "The kitchen is out. Sorry." Puzzled, I watched as the tables around us ate what looked exactly like the bread and butter they were supposedly out of... Third, the food quality/portion size seemed diminished while the price went up. We ordered the Pork Cheek Ravioli. $11 gets you... 3 small ravioli on a big plate. The beet salad was the best part of my dinner; very tasty but $7 for a small half-salad. My entree was the Arctic Char. A bit overdone, and not that great for $30. By the end of the meal, we were so uncomfortable after basking in the sun, we skipped dessert. I guess I can't blame the restaurant for weather damage, but they do make these things called shades. I guess I wouldn't have minded had my food and service been as good as it was in the 2006 - 2012 era. In any case, it was a bit unsettling to see a place that would have previously gotten 4 or 5 stars to have fallen to this degree. I really want to give it one more try to see if this was a fluke or an indication of a sad spiral.
(2)Jason R.
In all the times I've been here I have had nothing less than great service and excellent food.
(5)Debbie T.
Delicious Mahi Mahi sandwich! Crispy shoe string fries. Attentive service. Very relaxing terrace setting. It was a very early dinner for us so, I can't speak to the noise level. Kick back or come celebrate a special occasion.
(4)Stacy E.
I had dinner here last night & everything was excellent! Wine presentation, app, chicken, & pork shank were perfect. I can't wait to come back again. It's one of the better meals I have had since moving to GR.
(5)Brad M.
We went for dinner on a Monday night. It was cold outside, but warm and cozy inside! The waitstaff was knowledgeable and friendly, and the view of the river was very nice. The fireplaces were going, on couples were snuggled around tables having dinner. It was wonderful. From a Yelp! review, I had to have the duck, and it was amazing! Would order that again in a heartbeat! All of the food we had was delicious, and I can't wait to go back!
(4)Nathan J.
This is a really good restaurant. Good food, good service , and a good atmospher. I do feel like this place has taken a few small steps back. Last night I ordered the salmon and it was good, but not mind blowing as I had come to expect. This has been the case my last two trips. Hopefully they are just working out some kinks. With all that said this is still a good restaurant and my wife and I did enjoy our time.
(4)Vince B.
I don't remember the last time I experienced such amazing Customer Service. The moment we walked in the door we were greeted by super friendly people, our waitress was PHENOMENAL, her name was Lindsey, and as we walked out we were re-greeted with smiles. GREAT STAFF! The food was very good. It's definitely upscale in pricing but the food matched up. French Onion soup: A, shrimp A++, had the New York Steak it was HUGE! The ONLY reason I have 4 stars instead of 5 was that I asked for medium rare and it was to red. But still tasted amazing. I would go back 4sho!
(4)William P.
Great seating, service, drinks, very enjoyable until the food came out no flavor the steak had no flavor and dry, calamari had no flavor made all 6 people at the table feel like we paid way to much
(2)Angela S.
Fantastic food and drinks! They made my martinis perfectly- extra dry with 2 olives. We ordered several different appetizers and they were great. We had the chicken lettuce wraps, calamari, and corn bruschetta. Then we split the paella. My only complaint was the paella rice was extremely heavy with saffron and it overpowered the lobster and the mussels had grit in them. Our waiter was great and took great care of us. I can't wait to go back! Plus they had a live jazz band playing and it was a beautiful night. What more could a woman ask for when out with friends? :)
(4)susan h.
stopped at Reds last night for dinner. Exceptional. Our waitress was Marissa and she made it a fun night for us. Food was good and the wine was excellent.
(4)Joy H.
Ate at Reds tonight and had a horrible experience. Not sure why people think this place is so grand. I ordered the lobster risotto and was less than pleased by my meal. Some of the vegetables within the dish were not cooked, there was no seasoning so the dish just tasted like buttery rice with hard veggies and very little lobster. Not what you expect when you're paying $30 for this dish. My husband ordered a burger and beer off of the happy hour menu and asked what his beer options were for that deal. She told him the options and he picked one. When the check came they charged him full price for the burger and beer. When asked the waitress stated that if he wanted the happy hour deal then he shouldn't have ordered a draft but a can of beer. How was he supposed to know she was going to serve a draft beer when the beer he did order also comes in a can. Another waitress came over and acted like it was our fault and was extremely snotty. Food and service was incredibly disappointing. When your spending a lot of money to celebrate your anniversary I'd recommend going somewhere else. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
(1)Scott B.
Not impressed. Food was over price for the quality. I go the flat iron steak and I was not satisfied for $24.
(1)Aaron G.
We decided to try Reds for our Anniversary. Overall, we were pleased with our experience and the food was amazing. From start to finish, everyone was very engaged and worked very hard to ensure we were taken care of and made sure to address any issues we may have had (which were none during this visit). The food was presented very nicely and it didn't take an act of congress to get our drinks refilled. This place is a little bit more on the pricey side, but I felt like I got what I paid for. I would definitely recommend Reds on the River to anyone looking to spend a special night out at a classy restaurant.
(4)Daniel D.
Went there for lunch with my family. The setting is great with a nice view of the river and a nice simple elegant decor. The food was amazing. I tried a bite of the Cuban sandwich and it's probably the best Cuban I have ever had. My wife had the chicken pesto sandwich and it was also good. I ordered their signature dish, the lobster grilled cheese and tomato bisque and it did not disappoint. Taking a simple dish -grilled cheese and tomato soup- and elevating it with great ingredients (gouda, american, and mozzarella cheese blend, sourdough bread, a nice chunks of lobster) is a technique that I wish most restaurants would embrace like Red's has. Truly an excellent dining experience. All the stars!
(5)Aaron H.
Very overpriced for very lackluster food. I've been there about three times, and have been consistently underwhelmed. The ambience is very nice, but that is about it. If you can't eat outside, don't eat there. They focus all their energy on their pretentious shtick (i.e., waitstaff gives you a business card). and focus no energy on their food. After discussing with my wife how disappointed we were (yet again) with the food, we overheard a patron at an adjacent table complaining that the food had no taste. The waitress responded: "have you tried salt and pepper"? For a thirty dollar piece of fish, should you really anticipate that the flavor you are going for is salt and black pepper? Like I said, I've been there three times, and I'm done. I can't justify spending this amount of money on this mediocre (at best) food.
(2)Steve K.
NIce place - the view was great and relaxing environment. I had the beet salad and it was pretty good - lots of beets and veggies. The steak was prepared medium rare and it was spot on. I would have given it 4 stars if it wasn't for the confusion I felt from the staff. One person would say one thing and another would say another. I don't know if it was a isolated event but their execution could have been better. Tips - Use Open Table to make a reservation - super easy. ***** (5 Stars)- Amazing, zero flaws, a must go! (Not given often) **** (4 Stars)- Memorable, strongly feel you should visit *** (3 Stars)- Above average, worth a visit ** (2 Stars)- Average, some pro's and some con's * (1 Star)- Opinion is do not go, below average
(3)T C.
The Cuban pork is great, service is wonderful. We sat outside and the view was pleasant.
(4)Deb B.
We always have a great meal here. We stopped in for restaurant week. They had three course meal for a set price with wine parings. App was a Michigan corn brushetta - very good. I had the porchetta -excellent. Dessert was ok...grilled peaches over homeade ice cream - it was not as good as it sounds and I did not care for the wine paring... but that is a matter of taste. The service was excellent and the staff was very knowledgeable...overall great dinner!

My wife and I dined at Red's for dinner last week and for the most part were totally impressed with the service and quality of the food. Of note are their homemade salad dressings, which were creamy and of excellent taste and quality. My wife had a shrimp salad which was as fresh as it gets with beautiful huge shrimp. I had the ribeye steak which I had to send back because it was way under cooked. The quality of the meat was just okay, not stellar for the price, however everything else we had that night was teriffic. We'll certainly be back. Further, the service was great. Our server was George, who was totally professional and attentive.
(4)Valerie V.
The atmosphere was cozy, the food was good, but the service was horrendous! This was my first time at Reds and I went as part of a group of 9. We waited at least a half an hour for our drink order to be served, and had to wait after that for the server to return to take our order, which is all she did. She did not explain the menu, offer up any suggestions, or tell us anything about the restaurant; but the servers taking care of the tables around us received that attention from their servers. Once our orders were placed, we did not see our server again until the food came, which did so within the expected time frame. She did not check back on us until it was time to ask about dessert. We all declined and she brought our individual checks, complete with a 20% service charge for large parties. That was the kicker! When a server knows she is getting 20% no matter what level of service she gives, where is her incentive to give her guests a GREAT experience? I was so disgusted by the service and the fact that I had to leave a $12 tip for this: "What do you want to drink? What do you want to eat? Here's your food? Want dessert? Here's your bill. See ya later!" I had ordered the lobster paella. It was good, but it I'm pretty sure it was just their jambalaya with some lobster meat in it. I've had much better meals at other restaurants for the $60 I spent just on myself.

Great food. Poor service. My wife and I recently went to Reds on the River for a birthday celebration dinner. Our server asked if it was a special occasion and we told her that it was a birthday. She said there would be a special dessert for the birthday person. We ordered our meals and they were great. Prepared just how we liked them. Then came dessert. There was no mention of the special dessert so we figured it would come as a surprise as we had seen at 2 other tables during our meal. So we ordered dessert. And here's the kicker. When the desserts were served, so was the check! At Reds on the River? Denny's maybe, but Reds?? It was as though we were being rushed to leave. And there was no special dessert. When we asked our server about it, she simply said, "Oh it's just this little thing, just big enough for one". In fact, that's not what we saw at the other 2 tables that were also having birthday celebrations. But wait. There's more. My wife wrote a very nice email to Reds just as feedback about our experience -- no finger pointing -- just feedback, so they could look into correcting it for future diners. They never even acknowledged that they received her email. No "Thank you for your feedback", no "Gee, we're really sorry about the poor service". Nothing. Not at all what I expected from an establishment like Reds. It's experiences like this that show a restaurant's true colors. I guess 2 people generate a smaller check and are therefore given poorer service at Reds. Too bad. It seemed like a nice restaurant.
(2)Luke B.
The food was very good but the place felt very dated. The waitress was very nice but she handed me a business card when she first came to the table. It is a very tacky restaurant policy that needed to go out with the 1980s. The food was very good and well in line with the price they charge for it. Could use a few more options on the menu but the selection is good.
(4)Jim B.
Pricey but the juice us worth the squeeze. They do have soup salad and sandwich. The $10 burger and beer in the summer is worth it! ! They always have interesting specials and the ambiance is awesome! !!
(5)Anne B.
Go here on a Monday!!! They have a special where you can get a Steak Burger, fries, and a domestic beer for $8. The Steak Burger is great - like nothing I've ever tasted. It's the juciest burger I've ever had and the flavor is just amazing. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because the food is quite salty and service was not that great. Next time, I'll ask for no salt on the fries and less on the burger. Plus, I've been here other times for dinner, but it's just so highly priced. Service was lacking, too. Both times I've been there recently, dinner took nearly 2 hours. We found ourselves without a waitress once the meal was served and it took forever to get the bill and cash out. We also had the calamari app-which was cajun spiced and fried and it was great, but it was kind of gross that there was a pool of oil in the bottom of the bowl. Wish they had happy hour specials on drinks and apps, because the setting is great. But, it's just not a place that I can justify going frequently, unless I go on a Monday. The burger deal is so competitively priced that I can (and will) manage to overlook the shotty service and the saltiness of the food.

Best duck dinner! Try the Birthday martini, wonderful. Traverse chicken, great! Mahi was okay. Service sometimes slow.

I went to red's on the river back when it first opened and thought it was a lovely location but now- not so much. The 3 hostesses didn't greet us at all- just looked at us while chatting but the door lady did greet us. The food was okay, tasted lovely, however not checked over, 2 of the plates looked like they missed their plate check, with steak pieces all over. But the steak presentation was okay- now when the desert came the girl made a mess! Chocolate mousse all over the plates, and the forks and she smudged my white dress- it seemed as though she quickly put the plates down and dissapeared as though she would have gotten in trouble. Must say- service just doesn't work when the restaurant's important FOH staff are mostly High Schoolers. Needless to say- no really worth the price.
(2)Marcy M.
My husband and I recently ate here for the first time on a Friday night. We asked for a shaded spot on the deck and had a nice table. It took a little while for her to take our order, but we had already gotten our drinks so it wasn't a big deal. The waitress was very nice and our glasses never sat empty. I had the lamb shank and my husband got the NY Strip. Both were very good, I will probably go for the steak next time too. I would definitely eat there again.
(5)K J.
A very pleasant and delicious experience for my first time at Reds! We were there with an average sized group (8 adults) for an evening dinner reservation. Service was prompt and incredibly attentive. Food was delicious from start (empanadas and a meat platter) to finish (desserts all around!). Everyone's entrees were well-prepared, fresh, and flavorful. The pear and Stilton salad is remarkable. Dinners (which were jambalaya, London broil, whitefish (2), Torch Lake chicken, a Reuben, the NY strip, and a salmon special) were thoroughly enjoyed and finished without any leftovers. We will be back, even if just for special occasions now and then.
(5)Louise D.
Birthday celebration for my sister. She lives on the west side of the state. I do not so I told her to chose a "really nice place". We had hoped the temperatures would stay in the 70's so we could sit outdoors (but they didn't, so we couldn't). Overall, the atmosphere was nice, noisy but not so you couldn't carry on a conversation. The food was very good, the service excellent, the Happy Hour free appetizers missed the mark (Mexican flavored hommus??) For dinner, we had the salmon, the whitefish and the jambalaya...and we enjoyed every bit. We finished with the dessert sampler--smaller portions of three desserts. They wrote "Happy Birthday" on the plate in wonderful chocolate (which we scraped off and enjoyed too)
(4)Apryl C.
I had a Groupon for Red's and my husband and I just had a very nice dinner. The Goat Cheese app was average but the Torch Lake Chicken entree I had was really good. The chicken was hot and juicy with a ton of blue cheese crumbles, sitting on a bed of tasty mashed potatoes. My husband got the Brisket sandwich, since they were sold out of the steak burger, and it was good too. We also got the dessert sampler with creme brulee, chocolate mousse cake and apple spice cake. All very good. The service was good. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful and our waters were filled by multiply people all night long. We'll have to come back when the weather is nice to sit on the deck and enjoy the view.
(4)Bob R.
I went to Reds on New Years Eve. My lobster bisque was quite good. It was a special for the night, and although it was lukewarm and thinner than a proper bisque, it had huge chunks of delicious lobster in it. I had the seared scallops which were great although a bit pricey at $35 for 4 medium sized scallops with a nice mushroom risotto. You pay for atmosphere here. I'm not sure why because it seemed like a fine dining version of Bill Knapp's. It had an elderly crowd, but I love the building and location.
(4)Jodi W.
If you're in Rockford, and you want to enjoy a more upscale experience in this little Norman Rockwell-eque town, then Reds-on-the-River is for you. Lunch is good for business, and if it's warm, you can eat outside and have a leisurely afternoon overlooking the Rogue River. Good salads - try the pear/stilton, and good sandwich/soup combos - try the Lobster roll. Probably more pricey than the areas restaurants, but why not make a day of it in Rockford - go shopping at the Footwear Depoe, the little boutiques, and enjoy the town. There is also a nice walking trail along the river that would be a good way to burn off a big meal. Only 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids, it's a cute little getaway.
(4)Toby K.
Great atmosphere, but the food is not what you would expect from a top-tier restaurant. Bland or average food that is uninspiring. Wine list is excelelnt though. I would not spend $50-75 on a dinner here when you could spend that at a place like San Chez and get much better tasting food for the price.
(3)Jeremy J.
I've been to Reds twice before and both times something's felt just "off". I'm hoping for a better experience this time, but our first mistake is choosing to sit in the air-conditioned interior rather than on the deck (it is too warm to sit outside and enjoy a hot meal, we believe). The hostess is clearly overwhelmed and we do that awkward dance at her stand while other patrons filter in behind us. Our seater makes no small talk as she guides us through the mostly-empty restaurant to seat us at a small two-top crammed against the window-wall looking onto the deck, right next to a table with kids. Our second mistake of the evening is not asking to be reseated somewhere else. We spend uncomfortable moments studiously ignoring the coughing child at the next table and feeling like fish on display next to the window. Our server arrives to tell us the specials. She seems friendly, but we quickly find out she is just slightly "off": mixing up which beers are on draught; forgetting to check back after food is delivered; and promising to dry our table but never following through. Our busboy is inattentive as well; I have to remind him to clear dishes from our table. As I peer around the room, I am struck by the odd placement of tables which forces food-runners to weave unnaturally around other tables to properly deliver plates. And it is strange to see so many servers and busboys hovering at the perimeter of the restaurant, as if they are uncertain what to do or where to go. The food-runners glance repeatedly, almost nervously, at their order slips as they shuttle dinners. I feel vaguely uneasy but hope the food will quell my disquiet. To start, I order the Chicken Wings tossed in a fresh Jamaican jerk seasoning with a lime cilantro and sour cream sauce. I envision crispy drumsticks crusted with caribbean herbs; instead, I receive a generous bowl of wings coated with green slime. I read the menu again and it is clear the cilantro lime should be in the sour cream, not coating the meat! No matter; I am a brave contender and these wings are going down. I take a bite and relish the perfectly cooked chicken, but am suddenly hit over the head with a lime sledgehammer. Wham! No sublety at all, just a pounding blow to the noggin' with that slimy coating. I try to muddle through but end up leaving three wings, even with Juliet's help. I know what you're thinking, "Jeremy never leaves anything on his plate!" I wash the lime away with my Short's Pandemonium Pale Ale (which our server refers to as "Patio Pale"). I am beefed out after a week filled with burgers at The Butler in Saugutuck and amazing brisket at Six.One.Six, so I already know what I'm getting after researching the menu online: Cajun Mac 'N Cheese! Cooked with Spanish chorizo, andouille sausage and onion tossed in a creamy gruyere and parmesan cheese sauce, this dish is evidently a steal at $17, right? Wrong. The shallow bowl arrives and our chins drop. Really? The wings had been generous, but something as simple as mac-n-cheese is being served as if it were gold? Tentatively, I take my first bite...smoky, creamy, cheesy...and then I bite into what can only be classified as akin to a bacon bit as fake-tasting as Bac~Os. After a few more forkfuls, I am overwhelmed by all the flavors and inauthenticity. I never thought it possible to mess up mac-n-cheese! Like the wings, I feel the heavy-handed thump of the sledgehammer. Unhappily, I push away the rest of the noodles and finish my wine. At least the $6 Alfred Roca Pinot Noir is good! Both of us decline dessert, not wanting to risk any further injury. (In fact, we opt to drive back to Grand Rapids to enjoy amazing dessert at La Dolce Vita, but that's a story for another time.) It is worth noting that I have had satisfactory meals at Reds in the past, even if a little "off". I have to remind myself that we are not truly reviewing the restaurants on HeFedSheFed, but rather sharing this particular experience. Nevertheless, based on this adventure's unsatisfactory conclusion, I will not be rushing back to Reds on the River any time soon.

Very good beef carpaccio, definitely the highlight of the meal. I was underwhelmed by mac & cheese with andouille sausage. They chopped up the sausage too much so it cooked too quickly and became tough and chewy. But it was still good, so Just keep nice sausage slices and don't get fancy. The beer and wine list was very good. I will definitely be back for one of their signature steaks next time.
(4)Jonathan J.
Loved it, maybe unlike the other people we had great service and really enjoyed the time and food. I had perhaps one of the best steaks I've had in a long time, and definitely the best steak I've had in the West Michigan area (and I eat out a lot). We selected this place for my parents 40th anniversary and surprised them by having all the kids there, even the couple that is out of town. The food is pricey but not more than a dinner of that type calls for. Our server was great, she helped us all out as it was all our 1st visit there. The desert and coffee was wonderful as well. Not an every day place for dinner but great for a special occasion. Funny bit is the GPS had us no where close for some silly reason

Red's on the River is one of the areas' most interesting and unique new dining options. Located approximately 10 ~ 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids in Rockford, Michigan, Reds...which sits astride the banks of the picturesque Rogue River is quickly becoming a much loved dining hot spot. Recently, on a whim, we decided to head 'up north.' The restaurant is located in the quaint, historic Rockford Village downtown area. It's a huge building with a Tuscany inspired architecture. Walking up to the door, I marveled at how large the place seemed to be. Well, that's because there's more to this restaurant than the main dining room. Included in the complex are a very well stocked wine shop, banquet and catering facilities, business offices in the upstairs area and a patio dining area which runs the entire length of the building; providing an unrivaled view of the riverfront. We choose outdoor seating as it was a beautiful summer evening. The service was superb. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, the wait staff were attentive, prompt and well informed about the menu. Now let's talk food...The menu presents an interesting and somewhat eclectic mix of options. Reds on the River prides itself on it's extensive array of wines...particularly the red wines, and the steak and seafood selections. According to their site, the seafood is flown in fresh daily. Our waiter informed us about the fact that their steaks are aged on site for approximately 3 weeks. In addition, the restaurant works with local farms to provide fresh produce of a seasonal variety. The bread which was also from a local Grand Rapids, Michigan bakery was deliciously warm, moist and hearty. I, in particular , appreciate a restaurant which cooperates with local farms to benefit it's patrons and our community. For starters, we ordered the chicken empanadas which were served on a bed of lettuce greens trickled over with a seasoned mayonnaise. An inventive touch to the empanadas was the addition of raisins...a nice complement to the savory blend of spices in the filling. My husband had a crock of French Onion Soup. I decided to try the Torch Lake Chicken for my main entree and my husband opted for a Cuban inspired dish, the Ropa Veija. I wondered if the pristine, upper mid-Michigan lake was the inspiration. The cherry glaze was the hint. The chicken was succulent and the cherry glaze was not overly sweet. A bed of whipped Yukon potatoes served as a robust base atop which curly crisp onion rings added a whimsical touch. Saving room for dessert is highly recommended as the sweets selections are prepared on site. There were many options, but I decided on the Tres Leches Cake one of my favorites. Reds on the Rivers' twist on Tres Leches included a fruit compote (in red syrup of course) and a raspberry sorbet. As the sun began to work it's way down and the evening cooled, the Meijer White Pine Trail allowed walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy the view too. After dinner, we strolled around the building along the river...a perfect way to end a lovely evening.

Although the restaurant is beautiful, the food is overpriced and mediocre. The cheese polenta was just ok; the accompanying sautéed greens were bland and lukewarm. Overpriced at $19.50. Salad was extra - $5 for a very small Caesar that did not come when everyone else got their soup.

Expensive. Good meal, definitely. But I cannot recall a particular item that has me rushing back. The atmosphere is lovely and service is very good. I recall that even more than the details of the meal. Steak was prepared well. Vegetables were properly cooked. But it was too pricey to frequent. It is, for us, a once in a long while kind of thing. Frankly, we've been finding other places we enjoy with fresh offerings even more for half the price.

I love to sit outside and watch the river while eating good food and enjoying a great wine selection. The lunches are reasonably priced and they cater to my children's picky eating with no fuss! Dinners are a bit pricey - but every meal I've had I have enjoyed! Plus they have a great Tomato festival and do lots of events for the town of Rockford.

Great atmosphere. I am not a food critic, but the prices did not match the taste. Will be back to try the outside deck in the summer for drinks and apps.

Service is amazing. I think we were over dressed myself in a dress and hubby in a tie. The Beef carpaccio appetizer was amazing. The entree portions were tiny and expensive though. Do not waste you time on the mac and cheese-bland!!!! Hubby got the white fish-it was ok but tiny!!!!!! Drink, beer, and wine selection was amazing though with some reasonable prices. The Ocktober fest was yummy! Like I said: Overwhelmed by the great service but way underwhelmed by the food.

Aside from the hostess... Everything was great. Hostess was a little slow, probably would have turned us away if I did not ask to wait for a table. Our waiter mentioned he has heard complaints about the hostess being short with customers. We had no reservation but only waited 20 minutes for a table. We waited in the bar, my cocktail tasted bad, the waitress took it back and it took about 10 minutes for a replacement. Apparently the tonic gun was out and had to be refilled or something. The replacement was perfect. Once we got our table, Good friendly service, the food was great. We ordered champagne and requested a cheese platter (which was not on the menu) and received a nice trio of cheese and fruit to acompany the wine. Prompt, friendly service, very good food, nice ambiance. Dinner was very good but the menu could use a little more diversity. Pretty standard fare but well prepared.
