THE best fried chicken joint in southeast michigan. The thin and zesty batter is fried to a crunchy perfection. I always order dark meat though. The chicken breast is too dry for my taste! Our family gets one of the bucket combinations to go and order the sides of mash potatoes, gravy and cole slaw. We make a pot of rice at home and eat everything up! KFC got NOTHING on Lee's! This is the place to go if you are craving fried chicken. :)

I have had Lee's twice- both times I ordered the same meal of Crispy fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. I enjoyed ALL of the food very much both times! However, it IS fried food. Once the enjoyment of the taste is over, the crummy feeling one experiences after indulging in fried goodness sets in. It is very small inside; The only option is carry-out and there are no seats inside to sit on if waiting for food. But the employees are very efficient with order-takin and making, and so the line moves quickly. It gets very busy on Wednesdays during dinner time, as they have a $1 off special. I like that the business has curb-side service for those who are handicapped.

Ok,, let's talk chicken,, like fried chicken. Cause everybody has their own little favorite chicken spots. Downriver has the best Chicken Shack in all of michigan, Southwest Detroit has Pollo Chapin flexing it's muscles, Clawson area has big and bad Faym-us chicken,, then there's this guy, Lee's Famous Recipe in Plymouth. This spot is a true power house juggernaut in its chicken sales. They literally have the chicken flying off their shelves and they couldn't dispense it fast enough either. Lines would form all the way from outside the restaurant just to get a turn to order between the two cashiers. It's a strictly business joint, literally a hole in the wall,, you order, your food comes out and you take it home then proceed to devour. There are two picnic tables right outside of the restaurant if you choose to want to eat it around the premises. The chicken here is phenomenally good. Even the white meat chicken is moist, crunchy and flavorful all at the same time. I don't usually order white meat because chicken breast usually ends up on the dryer side of the chicken meat spectrum, but they seem to have it all figured out. Their side dishes are yummy as well.. Their mashed potatoes is good and buttery, also their Cole slaw is very exquisite. The service is hella prompt. It's a hole in the wall type, so there isn't really anything to say except for their courteousness and welcoming demeanor. You pay, you pick up your food and you eat. It's as simple as boiling a pot of water. These are the simple things in life that we should never take for granted. Good chicken, family and life,,, it doesn't get any better than that. Best frickin chicken in the state! It is a little shack no bigger than an average living room, but the flavor is huge. The batter is perfect and crispy. The chicken always juicy and flavorful. The sides fresh made in house and it shows! Top recommendations are the slaw, mashers, and 3 bean salad. If you come on Wednesday there are specials. Do your taste buds a favor and be sure to get BBQ sauce, it is delicious. Service is great, fast, and food is always fresh.

My favorite place for chicken and chicken liver!!! Both are delicious. We also love the country fries. We live 21 miles away (checked it on mapquest) but it's always worth the drive.

  • Tony C.

The chicken here is outstanding. I've had their food a couple times and never been disappointed. The original recipe spice chicken has a lot of flavor. I'm a big fan of the country potatoes. These are wedge fries and even they have a delicious flavor. Cole slaw is great too. It's creamy but packed with flavor. I think their pricing for a group is also fair - $31 for 15 pieces of chicken and 3 sides. Not a bad price. Wish there were more of these up here in Michigan.

Seriously good chicken. I think this place does what it's supposed to do: crispy, beautifully spiced fried chicken, often with meat so tasty and juicy (which is rare: often the meat itself in fried chicken is not great). I get 1 spicy breast and one regular breast because I can't ever figure out which one I love more. Very fast service with a sweetly earnest and helpful and dare I say professional group of chicken slingers. I've eaten supposedly great fried chicken all over. I may have found similar but never better (and I only found similar once, in New Orleans). Oh. And they have fried chicken livers. Not everyone's cup of tea but really good (only complaint is they put them in a waterproof paper food serving thingie and they sort of steam and get soggy in there).

Better than KFC! The chicken was crispy and not to salty. The sides were good too! It is a must if you are in the Plymouth area.

Best chicken strips ever. Great breading and good thick pieces. The chicken soup is the best I've had. People say the mac and cheese its great. And coleslaw is the best I've had from any chicken establishment. Would recommend it in a heartbeat.

  • Jack A.

This place is always consistent, the chicken is good and sides decent. The service is pretty good most of the time, I just think it's a waste of money to load up the condiments the way they do.

  • Kelly S.

This is the best fried chicken! We make the drive every so often just to indulge! I usually get a mix of original and crispy because they are both so good! The slaw is good, and so are the wedges, not a fan of the Mac and cheese, too bland.

It's like Kentucky Fried Chicken was when I was young. Chicken is always fresh and juicy not dried out and the sides are delicious.

Delicious Fried Chicken and gravy has a nice kick to it. The mashed potatoes didn't do much for me but as long as the gravy is poured on it, it's fine. Bisquits are good, too. Can't wait to try more items off the menu!

  • Evie B.

The food is quite excellent but in the past 3 orders they've made mistakes. Wrong items included or omitted . I live a few miles away so going right back isnt an option. Spoke to Brian- manager. I ask that they double check orders for accuracy and if they won't from this point I won't leave til I've checked. Also don't try to smash everything into a too small box. Our biscuits were crumbled balls of bread.

Good bye Colonel Sanders, Hello Lee's!!!! I eat here about once every other week (shame shame, I know it's not health but I can't help it) I don't know what they put in their chicken that makes me crave it so bad. I always get the boneless fried chicken meal and always get more than I pay for. )My wife is gluten free and this is the one place she talks about missing their food., I take her to Moo Cluck Moo and she's happy), back to Lee's.... I usually get green beans and mac n cheese on the side. Both very good. I just wish their mashed potatoes where a little better, I think they may be made from the instant flakes. If those were better I would order those too. Anyway, there are so many other good sides that they still get 5 stars....the chicken is just that good.

    (5)
  • Marcus S.

There legs and thighs were plump and juicy inside, covered by a crispy, medium crust that was greasy and flavorful. Probably some of the best fried chicken I ever had I really don't try anywhere else since I've found this place not to mention there Mac and cheese and rice pudding is just as tasty I've even had these guys cater some of my parties I highly recommend these guys just some good ol finger licken chicken 5 star all the way!

  • Brent E.

You can never go wrong with Lee's, the line is crazy at dinner time with people getting carry out and the wait is worth it. The cole slaw is great, along with the few sides I have had.

The chicken I got was very bad.. Over salted and not spicy at all.. I even got rotten chicken. I will definitely not return to this place

I can't believe I haven't a review for this place yet! This is definitely by far the best fried chicken around town! When my hubs and I were living in Canton, we were so happy to find this quick and delicious chicken shack. I didn't realize it was a chain, but hey, sometimes chains can be better than mom and pop places. The first time we stopped by, we noticed a big chicken dancing in front of the store, waving and jumping up and down to get the attention of drivers. We felt a bit bad for the person in the costume because it was during a hot summer day. This place is definitely a drop in and take out kind of place. As busy as they get, we were very impressed with out quickly they take orders and get the food out. We've only gotten the 8- piece meal, that comes with two sides (we get the mashed potatoes and coleslaw) and four biscuits. The chicken is always so crispy and the meat so tender and delicious. Not a big fan of fried chicken? The sides alone are a reason to go. The mashed potatoes taste like fresh potatoes recently smashed, instead of KFC's instant potatoes, and I love that they give a separate side of gravy, which means you don't get skimped on potatoes or gravy. The coleslaw always taste consistently and a tad bit watery, but still has a great crunch. It's probably the best coleslaw I've ever had in Michigan and California. The potatoes is pretty tasty, but I gotta be honest, my fav is Popeyes gravy because of small pieces of meat. Popeyes is still a fav for me because of the option for spicy chicken, but LFC is definitely another favorite. The best part about the chicken is, it's still crunchy and delicious the next day. A lot of yelpers rave about the chicken strips so I'm definitely going to have to grab some next time I go.

Love the chicken strips and mac and cheese! Gets really busy on Wednesday when they have a $1 off special.

    (5)
  • Maya C.

Some of the best chicken anywhere!!! The sides are great too!! At times, even have Lee's chicken cravings! Simply delicious! Not much else to say, except that don't let the long line detour you from going in. It goes fast because they know what they are doing!

    (5)
  • Jennifer V.

On Wednesday you can get $1 off your three piece meal. Their chicken strips are my favorite. Lots of dipping sauces. Great sides. Mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese, coleslaw I'm usually a fan of chicken livers. Theirs are not good. Biscuits are light and fluffy.

Came here because i was in the area and of course an assistance from yelp. All I can say afterwards is thank you all because having these wings(crispy whole wings that is), these are legitimately some of the best wings I have ever have them ( I would have to really think about it, but these might be top 5 wings in my opinion). I had the crispy wings, which are perfectly crispy and battered, perfectly spiced, and are just on point. I also had the mac and cheese, and to me is a better version of KFC's mac n cheese. Overall the chicken is great and i have now officially became addicted to Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken.

I don't know what Lee's does to get their chicken so good, but it's incredible. Knocks KFC/Chicken Shack/Popeye's all out of the park. The four-piece meal is a great deal for all that you get, with a ton of options for sides. The mashed potatoes are pretty standard and I'm not a huge fan of the mac-and-cheese, but let's be honest: I don't come here for the sides. The gizzards are incredible, too. Breaded in the same Famous recipe as the chicken, they're little nuggets of salty, decadent goodness. The prices are extremely fair and I haven't been met with anything but a smiling face from the person behind the counter anytime that I've been here. Heads up: They do a special on Wednesdays ($1 off the 3-piece meal I think?), so if you plan on visiting on a Wednesday or around a holiday/big event (like SuperBowl), be prepared for a crowd.

  • Michelle T.

Best place for chicken in this area. The Cole slaw is really good too. You can't go wrong here. The service is really fast, they have a great system. There could be a line out the door but you get in and out within 10 min.

    (5)
  • Martha V.

Lee's violates almost all of my food rules, yet I love it and we get take out from here several times a year. This is a take out fried chicken place par excellence. I have no idea what the reviewers who say it is just another fried chicken place are talking about. Lee's is the best fried chicken, anywhere. You can get strips, assorted, etc. There are yummy sides - I like the mac and cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy. Biscuits are tasty also. Here's the drill. You place an order, pay for it, and wait for it to be filled. If you go on a Wednesday, they run a special so there is frequently a line. Don't be intimidated by the line - it moves really quickly. There is no seating inside, this is strictly a carry out establishment. Service is outstanding - friendly and efficient.

I'm very happy with my last trip to Lee's Famous and have to write a review to tell my fellow Yelpers. They still have the Chicken Livers and Gizzards for you, if you are so inclined, but this time it's the Chicken Dinner I must applaud. This was the Crispest, Juiciest and Tastiest batch of Fried Chicken I've had in quite a while. The wife loved every bite. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked and the wings, legs and thighs were all equally done. We had the Mashed potatoes with Gravy and Cole Slaw and enjoyed it all. We can't wait to get more, especially if we are back in this area. 4 stars and I'll definitely be back...

  • Jeff L.

We don't eat a ton of fried food, but the family occasional has us bring it for large family outings, we used to go to that large chain acronym place, and end up literally waiting 45 minutes for our order, we got tired of the wait and found this place on yelp. We thought we give it a try, we order food for 20 people, no call in just walked in place he order, and they had it ready 5 minutes later. I WAS FLOORED! Then we got home, and man was this chicken good!, not greasy like that other place either, from here on out this is our chicken spot!!!!

    (5)
  • J.d. O.

Very soggy chicken. It tasted like it sat in a warmer for hours before I got it. The price felt a little high for old chicken that was probably cooked in the morning and given to me in the evening. Taste was ok, but nothing special! I would have rather gone to kfc and saved my money.

    (2)
  • Jessica A.

Best chicken around, hands down! Forget kfc, chicken shack, or any thing else....this is the BEST chicken I've ever had!

    (5)
  • Caroline N.

They do not take coupons off their own corporate website and Wednesday is their only day that they don't run special. I waited in line only to be told that they don't take the coupons. They weren't willing to work with me and make me happy so I took my business else where. Their food is good but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

  • Barramundi S.

Best chicken I've eaten east of the Rockies. Great service, quick and awesome food. Definitely not for you if you're on a diet but heck once in a while you can splurge. I've been there numerous times and the food and value is awesome. Highly recommend. Why 4 and not 5 stars - there's really no good seating area to sit and enjoy your food. They have a couple of benches outside but that's about it. Food is definitely 5 stars.

    (4)
  • Tami B.

This is - hands down - the BEST fast food chicken you will ever have in your life. I usually get the three piece boneless meal. On Wednesdays, it's $1.00 off. All of the sides are amazing! My favorite are the mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese or the chicken and noodles. Usually, instead of a dipping sauce - side of gravy!! MMM - now I'm hungry!

    (5)
  • Kris A.

OK, I've gone back to Lee's two times since my original review and here are my updates: 1. The chicken noodles side is AWESOME! It's not soup, but closer to a casserole. 2. I stand corrected on the cole slaw. It's actually not too sweet. I ordered extra to make sure! 3. The mac-n-cheese is VERY good for restaurant / carryout. 4. The green bean side is to die for. 5. The biscuits are good, BUT they really should offer butter with them. 6. The service here is incredible. TIP them! They really are busting their butts!

    (4)
  • Tory C.

Seriously amazing. Don't waste you're money for chicken anywhere else. Everything from Lee's is home style goodness. Great for huge parties or lunch for one. Biscuits are supreme. Chicken is to die for. The sides are delicious. The line may be a few people feel sometimes but no longer than a 5-10 minute wait and TRUST me it's worth it.

    (5)
  • Brad P.

I have yet to find better chicken anywhere. I always get their 3 piece tenders and find that i almost can't finish it. Great portions at very reasonable prices. This place is really a local gem hidden on Ann Arbor Rd. You get in and out so fast. Keep up the great food!!

    (5)
  • L P.

The chicken at Lees is consistently good. The Mac and cheese, slaw and mashed potatoes are also good. Even though they may be very busy, I've never had to wait long. Service is with a friendly smile.

    (5)
  • Hai H.

Lee's chicken is very delicious. I'm by no means a fried chicken connoisseur, but for me, it is the best fried chicken I ever tasted. I've had both the original and crispy/spicy chicken, and prefer the crispy batter. I've only stuck to the potato wedges and mac'n'cheese, as I find both very delicious, hence no reason to try anything else :) If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and give Lee's a shot. Service is friendly and quick, and guaranteed some tasty chicken.

  • Sergei S.

Love this place! Great food and the best coleslaw in town! Grew up on this stuff! My nana loved it ever since it was grandmas chicken! Great food And Wednesday is $1 off

  • Jason C.

This past week, I ordered their lunch special for our training lunch at the office (25 chicken strips, mashed potatoes & gravy, mac & cheese)... when I went to pick it up, they gave me a quart size of coleslaw for free! There service is great, their food is great... I now stop by at lest twice a month to enjoy the best chicken strips in town!!! Every time I go, I get the same quality of service, all the ladies that work there are very nice and treat you like a family member!!

    (5)
  • Daniel P.

It's okay...tried it after hearing about on yelp. Coating for the chicken is a bit salty and mash potatoes were mediocre. Have to say, I expected more after hearing the rave reviews. About the only thing true from these reviews is that I had to wait in line for it. Disappointing.

Lee's Famous Recipe is a staple in the South. As a kid I grew up eating Lee's Famous Recipe in small town Florida. The one in my hometown was bought out and demolished to make way for a shitty ass Checkers. Only to be closed to make way for a Rite Aid a few years later. What a waste. This was the first Lee's Famous Recipe I had seen in years. It was also the first one I had eaten at in many many years. I discovered it by accident two days after I moved to the area. What a wonderful find. I immediately pulled over, not even that hungry, and went inside. I split a snack box with a beautiful woman and it made the meal even better. Despite my love for this childhood favorite I am being totally unbiased. Before I ordered my meal I thought... "what if it sucks?" Lee's Famous Recipe did not disappoint. It was just as I remembered. Hot, fresh and juicy. The chicken was crispy, salty and fucking good. The kind of chicken that makes you want to bend it over and eat its gizzards. Yeah. It blows away the poor quality of Popeyes, incinerates the horrible KFC and literally shits on any other fast food chicken place while it pee's on the seat. Lee's Famous Recipe is the real deal. A no nonsense chicken.

Ah, Lee's. A staple in my diet since my childhood here in Plymouth. My parents live out of town now, and every time they stop by they get Lee's. My dad is insane so he gets the gizzards and loves them. Great service -- the girls are always nice and generally toss in an extra piece or two of chicken. If you go at peak meal times there is often a line practically out the door. They have the best chicken strips of all time! I like to dip them in the gravy - skip the prepackaged dipping sauces, to me they are too chemical-tasting and not worth it. Biscuits are yummy. I don't really care for any of the sides, and I think I've tried them all. The mac and cheese is a frightening neon color and the coleslaw is too sweet for my tastes. But my dad loves their coleslaw and buys like a ten pound bucket to take home when they go there. The food is super salty and it will leave you thirsty for days, I kid you not! but it's totally worth it.

  • Melvin F.

Me and a friend bought an 8 piece dinner here. The service was fast and the cashier recommended what she liked. I got the "spicy" fried chicken, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy. Neither of us was satisfied, the chicken looked good but it had no flavor. The sides didn't do it for us either. I don't plan on going back.

  • L H.

My husband and I consider ourselves to be foodies; we love nothing more than an outstanding meal at a fine restaurant with a great bottle of wine under the stars. So I thought I was immune to fast-food deep-fried chicken chains. Boy, was I wrong. If you're going to eat fried chicken, this is the best. Forget rubbery, dried-out KFC. The chicken breasts here are juicy, huge, and flavorful, with just the right amount of breading. And don't miss the potato wedges. We occasionally spring for the 3-bean salad as well, just so we can say we had a vegetable. It all goes extremely well with a nice glass of 18-year Highland Park, too. But then, most everything does.

    (5)
  • Karen L.

Yums on the crispy chicken! It was really great-tasting and crispy... even when warming it up again the next day. I would give that part 5 stars. And the biscuits are very buttery in a good way. The rest of the sides weren't as impressive. The cole slaw, corn on the cob were ... meh... not memorable. The mashed potato (which tasted like it came out of a box) and gravy didn't deserve to be on the same menu as the chicken. Next time, I'll just order the chicken and biscuits and forget about the rest.

    (4)
  • Dave C.

Yum! Never had this chain until I moved to Michigan but well worth a stop! Delicious!

I look forward to Lee's chicken every time I come back to visit the family in Plymouth. Being raised in Plymouth as a kid, we ate Lee's all the time. I'm very glad to see this business is still going strong and hasn't changed a bit from the old days.

  • Eric F.

Great tasting chicken. Not greasy and unlike any other fried chicken I've had. The coleslaw is money too !

  • Matt W.

Famous for good reason - it's really good chicken. Nice people too.

    (4)
  • Matt N.

Good food, terrible service. If you are there on a night when an actual adult is staffing the restaurant, the service might be ok. If an all-teenage staff is working, DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ORDER. They will get it wrong, and they will not apologize or offer you something for your time after you drive back to have it corrected.

  • Rebecca S.

I love this place! Go on Wednesday when it's a dollar off the 3 piece meal. I like the fried chicken with coleslaw and mashed potatoes. Hubby likes same. Kids like the chicken strips and mac&cheese. There is a wide variety of sides available with the meals. No seating - carryout only. I would eat here every Wednesday if I could. I am particularly impressed with the speed and freshness.

    (5)
  • Liz W.

I totally grew up on it so of course I like it, it is part of a chain but this is the only locale left in Michigan to my knowledge. It is honey dipped and pressure cooked chicken so it is generally juicy and good. I prefer white meat on the bone but the strips are very popular here. My parents like it here because they also sell decent chicken livers too. I have no idea if they are or not- full disclosure I do not eat livers or the other available gizzards. The mashed potatoes are a good side, the gravy is better than KFC. The baked beans and coleslaw are decent, everything else is meh. The biscuits are odd, not sure quite how to describe how though. To my knowledge they run special deals on Tuesdays or Wednesdays but don't quote me on it. Join the e club and you will get a free 2 piece or strips meal for your birthday!

  • Adam M.

Once you've had the chicken at Lee's, you'll wonder why you ever wasted your time or money at a KFC. There really isn't a great, detailed way to describe Lee's besides that it is really good. On top of being fantastic, Lee's is also really fast. I went in today a half hour before they closed and was in and out in under fifteen minutes. I wish that I could give this review more length and detail, besides that the food at Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken is fantastic, but really, that's all that needs to be said. The rest has to be figured out once you actually bite into it.

    (5)
  • Jewells N.

It was OK but NOT the "best chicken you ever ate" as some people have told me. Service is really good, but it is just chicken, so how can it be bad. If you want fired chicken and you are in area - super, but to drive 20 miles out of your way; there are better places.

    (3)
  • James K.

I love this place. I have been here many times and every time the food is excellent. I usually stick to the chicken strips. The sides taste great and the portions are huge. I can't eat a 3 strip meal myself. A meal for 6 and change that I can't finish. Plus it tastes great. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Lee's very well might be the death of me. Nothing fancy, just really good fried chicken.

O.M.G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the best friend chicken I have every had! Their cole slaw is to die for, and their mashed potatos are always so creamy and delicious! I know why this place is always packed!

Ok I am a fan! SUPER FAN! The chicken is moist and delish. I have to wonder why I never stopped here before. It seems like a secret in the neighborhood or something. They have the best chicken livers too! They remind me of the kind from Frankenmuth. Try it you will like it!

The best fried chicken for the price in a 15 mile radius.
