Decided to try it after Free Press cited it as having a beautiful outdoor patio. Not true. 3 people behind bar were chatting and ignored me until I interrupted and asked if I could order a drink. Service was terrible. Had to track down waiter to ask for bill. My advice? Stay away from the 5ive.

Had to grab some lunch before departing the hotel after a wedding. The food was very good though eating here after a heavy night of drinking was probably a waste on our part. I don't think anyone felt real great, but that's our fault. The food was all very good. Definitely a higher end restaurant though it was very nice for lunch. Seemed like a lot of women were there for lunch with friends too.

5ive Restaurant resides on serene grounds that include a reception hall, a golf course, and hotel. The restaurant itself had a minimalist aesthetic, dark, heavy wood, and comfortably-upholstered chairs. There were several tempting items on the menu along with the daily specials. I started the meal with the pork belly appetizer which was nicely seared, although it was a bit richer than expected. With a maple, bourbon sauce, chunky cooked apples and golden raisins, it was both sweet and savory and perfectly prepared. For my entrée, I went with the light and flaky sea bass - one of the specials that evening. Pan-seared and (unfortunately) slightly overdone, it was served with spicy red Thai sauce and vegetables. The shaved carrots, zucchini, and summer squash were prepared in white wine and were quite good. Additionally, I appreciated the creativity of using unusual ingredients, such as purple potatoes, but found that mashed, it was a bit gummy. Dessert was delightful. The dense pound cake had a light almond flavor. It was covered in a sugary almond crust, the sweetness of which was offset by tart berries. A combination of vanilla bean cream (crème anglaise, maybe?) and caramel sauces provided additional flavor. The sole server ably handled all the tables in the restaurant and was helpful.

This is really a hidden gem. If you didn't already know it was there, you would never find it by just driving by. It is hidden in the Hotel portion of the St. Johns Center. I have been here at least 4 times in the last year. They change the menu and the dessert menu every so often, so there are always a few new things to try. The wine list is good, not great, but good. The craft beer selection is really top notch as well. Both are a bit pricey, but worth it. Actually, the whole place is on the pricey side. I recommend the Risotto, or any of the steaks. The Filet is excellent, and the Risotto is always cooked perfectly. The prawns are pretty good as well. Save room for dessert. They have an excellent pastry chef who always comes up with something great for dessert. Tim and the rest of the staff do it right, you won't be disappointed.

This restaurant is less than expected. I wanted a nice steak dinner, but what I got was a mess of a steak. I ordered the rib-eye steak, medium, which I must say was done perfectly, but they add gobs of peppercorns and layered on some type of pepper gravy. The potatoes that were served with the meal were a traditional scalloped, but with loads of sugar added. I suppose some might like it, but I did not care for it. Normally this would not have been an issue and I would not have written a comment really, but what bothered me is that this place was so expensive for what I got. I paid $24 x 2 for two steaks and that is bad for what you get. One bright spot, if you order the 5ive Onion soup, you will enjoy it very much.

"A Hotel restaurant with Patio Potential" Five has a grand entrance, with full length Martini bar, humidor and plenty of seating. A patio is to the right of the entrance and the dining room is hidden in the back. The atmosphere is simple, clean and modern. Very chic. Service at the bar was great, they have an extensive wine list and an array of Martini's to choose from. Tom Mackinnon has created a distinct menu for Five that will set it apart. This is not a theme based renaming of standard fare, but a truly uncommon menu that is enjoyable to read and consume. The small plates (starter / appetizer) selection is a great example. It is unique for the Detroit area. Many seafood items, including Kani Kani (crab claws wrapper in a crab mousse) and The Aquarium (tower of scallop, crab stuffed prawns, crab claws, calamari) and Ahi Tuna Cones. We tried three of the starters; they were all very good. For dinner, I had the special; Pan-seared Scallops. It was served with a green, broccoli like vegetable and tandoori island rice. The scallops were good, but for the price ($26.50) I was slightly disappointed. The vegetable (which I had not eaten previously) turned out to be the best part of the meal. My wife and our two friends enjoyed their meal, but the price of the entrees was difficult to swallow. Service was rushed, although it was Friday night and perhaps the staff was new, the waitress did not even introduce herself. Our meal took almost 40 minutes to come, with no word from our server. The dining room also felt a bit cramped. We will try Five again once Summer hits and we can eat on the patio. Five seems like a great place to have a cigar and Martini after a round of golf, and the menu is certainly worth trying, but I need better service for the price if I am going to spend time at Five.

Restaurant is located inside the hotel/wedding venue. Typically I avoid hotel food but it came highly recommended by a colleague. The appetizers were all pretty good including: ginger shrimp, pork belly, artichoke dip with house made panini pressed pita and crab cakes. The shrimp was lightly battered and accompanied by a nice Asian relish. This was the best of the four. Would pass on the two mini crab cakes. Dinner was excellent. Had the scallops served over a bed of pumpkin risotto with grilled Brussel sprouts. Hiding in the meal was a few large pieces of pork belly? Great combo and super tasty! Chef was kind enough to plate three desserts for a tasting plate. Was excited to try the white chocolate pumpkin cheesecake, but it was just ok. The chocolate merveilleux was the clear standout. Almost as light as a mousse and had a super rich chocolate taste. Nice end to the meal. This place has a lot of history and you are allowed to tour the grounds. Unfortunately the restaurant area came later and the ambiance of the dining area needs help. This place gets five stars for food, three stars for the restaurant decor and five stars for the historic area.

We like to come for the special event meals! Mothers day brunch is one of our favorites. The staff are very professional and courteous. The chief creates quote the spectacular menu.

Sorry fellow Yelpers, but on this one I would have missed an awesome meal had I listened to the latest reviews for 5ive Restaurant. Fortunately, because it was later in the evening and we were coming in after a long day of travel, we opted to dine in at the hotel (The Inn at St. John's) In brief, we enjoyed a fantastic meal! Dinner started with appetizers and soup (chicken potstickers and 5 Onion soup - their version of the traditional Onion Soup). The flavor and presentation for the potstickers was so delicious, I asked if they made them in house. The server looked and me and said, 'Yes. We're serious about food here!" And serious they are. Corvina fish was on the menu. I had never had it, but was absolutely delicious. Very light and flakey and tastefully seasoned served with fall veggies and quinoa. Be sure to save room for dessert in this place. We had the carmel apple tart warmed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This was not your run of the mill dessert tart hastily warmed over. No, no no...the tart was freshly baked and the treatment of the crust left no doubt that an experienced pastry chef had their hands in the mix. Frankly, I have to admit that I did not expect to have this experience at a hotel restaurant, but am thankful to have faith restored in the fact that good food can happen in any space in which people care and are serious about what they do. If you're in Plymouth, I'd say stop here for dinner. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

This place is delicious and definitely overlooked! I have only had lunch here, so I cannot comment on their dinner service. First of all, the ambiance is very nice. During the warmer months, we have dined on the terrace which is lovely as well. The service was very good. I believe that their staff has benefited from being part of the hotel, as they have that hospitality attitude (more and more rare in the food and beverage industry, I'm sorry to say). Every item that I have ordered has been fantastic! Their soups are especially good and you can't miss with any of their sandwiches or flatbreads. Ask for a box to take home your leftovers because you must save room for one of their desserts!

If it wasn't for a church keeping this place in business, this place would never make it. (The church owns the church, golf course, a hotel, banquet halls, and a restaurant with a bar... Just try telling me churches aren't businesses.) The food is in small portions, very pricey, and is very "bland;" didn't taste like much of anything, little flavor. My friend and I both thought the same thing. (We ordered two different meals.) The hash browns had something added to them ; tasted disgusting. The service was somewhat nonexistent; wasn't busy either...was no excuse. Pass this place up. The only reason the restaurant isn't getting 1 star from me is because it wasn't a "horrible" experience, just very bad . If a manager or someone reads this, I'd appreciate a refund. I didn't complain to the server because I didn't want to embarrass my friend, otherwise, I would have. We did eat most of the food, but only because we were starving. (We drank quite a bit the night before.)

I love this place. Everything on the menu is delicious. It's close to my work so we eat here often. I highly recommend any salad with chicken or salmon. Many people love the bento box. Not sure why it's rated 3 stars. It deserves at least 4. Service is great and atmosphere is lovely. Eat outside if the weather is right.
(5)Lynden G.
Great food. Decent service. Nice ambiance. But they'll charge you 22% gratuity for 6+ people. I would go back to check out their normal lunch menu. I would definitely return for the brunch.

My wife and I met at 5ive with the intention of splitting some appetizers and having some cocktails on a weeknight recently. We wanted to sit at the bar, and the pleasant hostess directed us there. We were handed a "bar food" menu, but requested the regular dinner menu, as I had looked in advance at the starters online and wanted to order some. We were informed that because they were hosting a special wine dinner in their dining room that evening, only the bar food menu was available. That was disappointing, but we ordered cocktails and a couple of apps. Although they were not really busy in the bar, the service was spotty from the bartenders. In fact, we would have ordered an additional appetizer but we were never offered the opportunity. We had the mushroom flatbread and the potstickers. They were tastey, but not very hot when delivered to us - another signal of inattentive service. Prices were good, and the bar is attractive, with a nice outdoor seating area. But the food and service was a disappointment. We would probably try 5ive again, under the assumption that perhaps the "special event" they were holding impacted their normal good service and food.

Had a fabulous lunch there recentlhy with a friend. Enjoyed a wonderful salad with salmon and she had the same one with chicken. Wonderful service, classy decor and top drawer food. Nice size glass of wine. Variety of teas for the ladies. All very classy and made this a special day. Did I mention the desserts were to die for?? There is a wonderful peanut butter chocolate concoction that was worth the time at the gym! MMM.

Had a really tasty meal here last night. Sat outside on the very nice patio and dove into their accomplished beer and wine list for a few glasses. Entrees here are quite expensive, so we opted for a scattering of small plates off of their lengthy and impressive menu of appetizers, tapas, flatbreads and sandwiches. Had the calimari and crab beignets to start with excellent accompanying dipping sauces. Both were great and the calimari especially was one of the best iterrations I've had. Corn soup that the GF had was the weakest of the food related items. Surprisingly little corn flavor and somewhat lumpy texture. Stay away. Had the bacon and chicken quesadilla after, which was excellent. Came with a small amount of the best guacamole I've ever tasted. They need to up the portion and put it on as an app somewhere. Service was freindly but slow. Didnt really mind because of the company, wine, and beautiful weather/view, but do not come here expecting a quick "in and out". Overall, some really tasty food items and I look forward to visiting again.

Went here for easter brunch, it was not too busy, probably because of how expensive it was. It was $130 for two! (They added their own 22% gratuity, for a table of two, which really threw me off bc I would have tipped just as well and we were a very small party) We should have known considering it was a pre plated menu...the first two courses were very tiny samples, which was nice to try new things that I wouldn't normally order but it was just a tiny bite, I would have liked to at least had the option to order more, maybe it is my fault, something I am just not used to. The real problem with the pre plated menu was you could not have anything taken off, if you had an allergy or aversion. For the entree you were allowed to choose one more lunch option and one more breakfast option, i really wish you could just choose too from both options, it was early, I wasn't in the mood for lamb or steak. The waffles were incredible! Probably best Belgian waffle I have ever had! The dessert was great but again you couldn't remove any of the ingredients, I had high hopes for the nutella crepe which I saved for last, but their was banana in it and I couldn't eat it, so it ended up being a disappointment. Overall brunch was alright. For the price I wouldn't go again, maybe their other meals are better, maybe we will give it a try another time.

I was hoping this restaurant, that is located in the hotel would be a good spot to have meals. But unfortunately the food is not very good. The service was outstanding but that's not going to be enough to bring me back
(2)Lee D.
Enjoy dining at the bar, but the quality of service is highly dependent on who's working. First time was excellent, which brought me back. Next two times the servers were indifferent. Entrees were cold and dry, but the server never asked (both times) whether everything was fine. First time could be a lapse, twice seems like a pattern. There won't be a third.

I was a little concerned about going here due to the sketchy reviews I was seeing, but we decided to give it a chance as I had been wanting to visit this restaurant for a while now. We made a reservation on a Sunday early evening and requested a booth based upon several reviews regarding small tables near the main traffic pattern. The booths were very nice, however a little tight for 4 people. We probably would have preferred a table as the views are wonderful. I was very impressed that not only did they read the reservation request for the booth, they remembered the vegetarian request and went out of their way to indicate which items were vegetarian as they handed us the menu. Everything we ordered was wonderful. The mushroom risotto was excellent, the filet was wonderful and the salmon, outstanding. Everyone in our party was happy with their meals. The server was competent and attentive, with us and the other patrons. The brownie turtlle pie I ordered for dessert was better than expected, I would recommend without hesitation. The manager stopped by our table during our meal to check on us although we had no complaints at all. Give the restaurant a visit as they seem to have dealt with any issues they have had.

I love the venue. The Inn is beautiful and was decorated for the Holidays so even more so. The restaurant was nice, but small as others mentioned. We went on a Monday night and practically had the place to ourselves. So much so they seated us at the Chef's Table, which is located in the center of the room. ????? Anyway, appetizers were good. I ordered a feta fondue, thinking fondue. However, it was basically a feta dip. Tasty, but I was expecting fondue. The others ordered the flatbread pizza app which they said was good (i didn't sample because it had meat on it). Entree was the disappointment. I ordered one of the specials, the Ono Fish. I thought it was dry and not tasty. I have never had it before so have nothing to compare to but I was not a fan. I did love the ceasar salad but another person in my party said there was not enough dressing on their salad. All in all ambiance was great, service was good and food was "a-ok." But the bill was large...............
(3)Ann T.
Went there on a weeknight for an early dinner. Service was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed two appetizers, seafood stew and the risotto. Dishes were nicely plated and came out hot. Dining area had mostly business people and more people were in the bar area. Nice place to take out-of-town guests. Check out the beautiful architecture and grounds. Prices $$-$$$.

The food here was four star, but there were a few things that made be give them only three stars. Both my wife and I were not in the mood for a large meal so we both ordered from the tapas menu. I started with a Caesar salad. I often ordered a Caesar since I am a " tomatophobe" and tomatoes should never get near a Caesar salad----but not here, in spite of the fact that I told the waitress that I wanted no tomatoes on anything the Caesar came with a spoonful of a sun dried tomato relish on the end of a bread cracker resting in the middle of the bowl--it ruined half the salad. We both had the truffled spring corn velvet soup and it was very tasty, but it came with no bread or cracker side---maybe because we did not order a main entrée. It needed something more than a stand alone cup of soup. Finally I got the crab beignets and they were good, but I should have known that there was a lot dough with a little bit of crab--- and there was ---they were very tasty though. My wife ended with a chicken spinach salad and loved it.

I just wanted to take an opportunity to rate this wonderful, wonderful restaurant. The service was exceptional. I had the steak Panini with seasoned french fries which was absolutely delicious. The corn silk soup was amazing and I talked it off with one of the best desserts I've ever had. If you're in the area this restaurant is a must.

We came here to celebrate our anniversary. We were sat in a booth. I'm not a short person, but my feet did not touch the ground even with 4 inch heels. That became a little uncomfortable after a while. The food was alright. It wasn't knock me down, amazingly good, but it did hit the spot. The caesar salad was good. I liked the crispy cheese thing on top (I'm not sure what to call it). I had the mushroom risotto which was tasty, but I did get some grit in a few bites. That was a little disconcerting. My husband had the classic west coast cioppino which he liked. For dessert I had the strawberry caramel opera which was amazing. The complex tastes of strawberries and lemon curd with a nice, crunchy crust was wonderful. They surely can do desserts. Our server was nice and attentive. She did take time getting our wine at the beginning, but that was because they had to go downstairs to get it. She was very apologetic. It's a nice, cozy, relaxing place. I would like to come back here someday, but it is rather pricey. There are other places around the area that I'd rather frequent that I think are much better.
(3)Tony P.
Classy atmosphere. The service is spotty but always friendly. Leans toward a "hotel" restaurant type of atmosphere. Reviews over 1 year old should be filtered by the fact that the executive chef has changed. Quality of the meat, seafood and produce is top shelf. Sometimes the dish doesn't meet a 5 star level but you aren't paying a 5 star price. This isn't Max & Ermas. If you want a $15 pedestrian dinner go a mile down the road. Soups are inspired but not always on target. Salads are always nice. All seafood dishes have quality ingredients, large shrimp and scallops, fresh fish. I'm a fan.
(4)Scott H.
OK, so I was a captive audience for the week I stayed at St. Johns (with no vehicle - due to the conference). With that said I was GRATEFUL that the food (all three meals) were met with good quality, not to mention attentive service.
(4)Rachel M.
I give this place a solid 3. I'd do a 3.5 if I could actually. First off, I arrived for an early dinner (right at 5) as I was excited to try this place out since I am not in this side of town much with free-time. I appreciated the signs outside that clearly marked where on the beautiful property that spans the "Inn at St John". (I hate not knowing where I'm going). I'd expected 5ive to be a little more fancy. It's just a small dining area behind the bar/lounge. Not very eye-catching or particularly remarkable. I guess I just expected a little more due to the description, but none the less it's still nice. With that said, and probably because I arrived EARLY, the later crowd is likely different, I would not have felt out of place taking "well-behaved" children here had I been staying in the hotel with them. I was the only one in the dining room when I arrived. My service was casual, yet attentive. I ordered the crab cake appetizer. It was delicious and thoroughly enjoyed. It came with a side sauce that I thought was weird it reminded me of bbq sauce and I thought that didn't pair well with the crab cake (READ: Not bad, just strange... maybe someone else will think it's great). The cakes themselves were just fine anyways so I could have cared less. My dirty martini (blue cheese olives: check... always a plus) was strong yet satisfying. I chose the sea scallops with a salad. Salad was tasty. The scallops were delicious! The potato and spinach that accompanied them were equally enjoyable and a nice pairing. I was pleased and full. I read others did not enjoy this dish a while back, but personally, I was very happy with my choice. They may have stepped their game up as my server asked me if they were to my liking as well. Things had been going so well, I decided to order dessert. I may have missed the part on the menu where this was noted but I chose the tiramisu. I expected to get a piece of cake-shaped tiramisu heaven. My server came back with a mousse-type cake-in-a-jelly-jar dessert with a pretty garnish on top. It was a bit of a let-down... though it wasn't bad or anything - just not what I wanted. It really wasn't anything I'd order again... and it was $8 to add insult to injury. Again, maybe there was something I overlooked that stated this was how it would be served, but in any light... I was bummed and would probably skip that next time. All in all, 5ive wasn't "all-that" ambiance-wise but my entree and app was very good and I was happy with the food I was served and the service I received. (just not wowed). It was more casual than I had expected, (which may be due to my early dinner time) which isn't a BAD thing... but may have been if I had been looking forward to it being. I would return to 5ive if I was in the area or staying at the hotel and do recommend it as a place to eat, but I doubt I will go out of my way (I'm far East Detroit suburbs) to return again anytime soon until I've experienced a few other area restaurants.

Had nice three corse here, slad was mixed greens with a light vunagrette, center cut beef with a pinot noir reduction which was off the hook. Bartender needs to learn how to make an old fasioned though.
(4)Henry T.
We were there on a Sunday for early dinner. There was not many other diners there yet so we were the only table for our server when we got there. Service was good with very good food. However the portions were a little on the small side.

Nice place..why did they fire Tom McKinnon?

I've had 5ive on my list for sometime now and decided to go here for my girlfriend's birthday. I was a bit surprised when I read some of the negative reviews here, but I decided to chance it. In the end I'm glad we did. We had a great dinner at 5ive! We sat on the patio because outdoor seating is always good. The patio is comfortable and the ambiance is great. Just a warning though, the building A/C system is close by and creates a lot of background noise. It wasn't bad, but it made it a bit challenging to have quiet dinner conversation. We didn't have any of the issues other yelpers have described. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. She was always there when needed and gave us great service. As for the food, the brie appetizer and the five mushroom soup were both really really good. I could have eaten that for dinner and been happy. I had the fillet mignon and my lady had the ahi-tuna. My steak was great, I really enjoyed it. The ahi-tuna was good, nothing wrong with it all, just not great. They have some great Michigan beers to choose from and a decent wine list. 5ive is a bit pricey so it's not an everyday kind of place. We had a great time and look forward to coming back again for a special occasion.

First of all, before I go on a rampage, the hotel and the property itself is absolutely stunning! The restaurant is very nice as well, with a nice lounge in the front portion of the restaurant and nice tables and booths in the main portion behind the bar. Now is when I get not-so-nice: My boyfriend and I have heard so much about the Inn at St. Johns, so when my parents came in town a few months ago, we decided to take them there. The waitress was beyond unexperienced and had absolutely no wine knowledge. For a place as "classy" as 5ive, you would think that the servers would be able to recommend a good bottle of wine....nope! Not only that, but she got irritable because my father asked her to wait a second while he chose a wine because if she left, she would be gone for another 15 minutes. My boyfriend ordered their ribeye very rare....it came back almost well done. My fathers fish came out dry. After we expressed our disappointment to our server, we didn't have any manager come to our table. Extremely disappointed. We wanted to give 5ive another shot, thinking that after a few months they would get their stuff together. When we got there, we were greeted by a nice hostess and seated at a booth. As soon as we sat down, we couldn't help but notice the enormous amount of crumbs that were on the seat. Automatically, that put a bad taste in our mouth. A bubbly blonde haired server greeted us and we ordered the calamari for appetizer, followed by a med rare filet for myself and a very rare ribeye for my boyfriend. The server brought out the calamari and as soon as she placed it on the table we could not only smell the fishiness of it, but it did not looked cooked at all. My boyfriend took a bite out of it and had to spit it out. We sat there for almost 10 minutes (keep in mind it was not busy at all) before my boyfriend got up and followed our server to the host stand and told her to cancel our order and asked for the manager to come to our table. She rushed back to the kitchen to cancel our order and when she came to our table, she informed us that SHE WAS THE MANAGER!!!! Are you kidding me????? How could this "classy" establishment hire a 19 year old server to be a manager as well?? We will not be back....

Our family of 5 had Sunday lunch at 5ive to celebrate my father's 83rd birthday. I made a reservation in advance and explained that it was for a birthday and also to confirm that they would be serving their dinner menu for lunch on Sunday. When we arrived, we were shown to a table in the back corner OF THE LOUNGE. When I questioned the hostess, she told us that there was a large group seated in the dining room. Interestingly, we saw other people being seated in the dining room. We were the ONLY people being seated in the lounge. I asked the hostess for a table in the dining room, the dining room manager came over and informed us tersely that he was moving us into the dining room; not one friendly word or even a smile. That was the last time he acknowledged us for the rest of the meal. The food was OK. Starters were better; salads and soups were good. My father's halibut was meh, my filet mignon was OK without being anything special. My son had the short rib Wellington and my mother had the "American Kobe burger"; they both said their meals were "fine." My husband's ribeye was downright awful. He asked for medium/medium-rare and what he got was a thin well-done dry steak. We really didn't have the heart to complain anymore; most of it came home in a doggy-bag for our dog... We had a desert and coffee. Again, OK but nothing special. The creme brulee was fine. The chocolate mouse concoction was reminiscent of something we've gotten from the Whole Foods pastry case; I'm going to guess that it was not made in their kitchen. All in all, it was a pretty disappointing experience. We're really an easy-going family and always willing to overlook mediocre service for good food and vice versa; an average meal can be really enjoyable when the staff is friendly and caring. In this case, it was neither. I used to be a restaurant owner-chef and I'm appalled at the manager's attitude. I can't imagine a restaurant ever succeeding under a management who seems to care so little about his customers.
(2)Dave F.
Disappointing, was leary due to other reviews so just tried dessert. Blueberry tart was almost inedible. Was on menu with a key lime sorbet, did not bother to tell me, served with a blueberry sorbet instead. I only ordered this tart for the key lime. I won't be back

My parents, fiance and I stayed at the St. John's hotel for a long weekend in frigid January. Why would a California gal come here willingly on the coldest weekend they've seen in Southeast Michigan in a while? We came here to meet with wedding vendors and view the St. John's property as this is where my fiance and I will be married and have our reception. So the restaurant is located on the first level of the hotel and it's right accessible from the lobby seating area. You first walk through the bar/lounge which at night is super chill and the bartender woman was so great. They have SUPER comfy chairs and bar tables along with a really nice selection of alcohol. Moving past the bar is the restaurant where we ate breakfast here the first morning with my future in-laws, us, and our wedding planner. They notified us that they just recently got a new chef and I loved the food! The service was amazing and they really were super friendly and efficient. The quality of the food was high and the feel of the place was relaxing. It's a small restaurant but wonderful service and food.

Solid menu, good (not great) food, no surprises. Service was only OK. I expected something better and a little more exciting in such an elegant setting.
