We stopped here for a late breakfast, mostly by default -- we were headed out of town and just wanted coffee and something to eat. We were not impressed by the inattentiveness of the hostess when we walked in; I understand that everyone in a restaurant multitasks, but when you're a hostess and see someone new walking in, at least make eye contact and let us know you'll be able to help us in a minute. Our waitress, on the other hand, was a real gem -- very friendly and helpful. We ordered eggs Benedict for our meal; while we could tell that the hollandaise was not scratch-made, we were impressed by the perfectly poached eggs, and we also thought the English muffin bases were of better-than-average quality. My accompanying potatoes, which I'd ordered extra crispy, were just the way I like, like a latke. My partner ordered what I think were called cottage fries, which I would call potatoes O'Brien -- skin-on potato hash with onions and bell peppers; they were also very good. Coffee was okay. The interior of the restaurant was clean and neat but a little thematically muddled -- tapestry print on one wall and (cute) rustic carvings of local wildlife and nautical scenes on other walls. (I vote for more local art and less institutional "foof" that doesn't match the location and casual nature of the restaurant.) We also got a chuckle over the menu, which stated that meals were served from whatever-o'clock "until closed." (Actually in a resort area this very often makes sense.) Since we weren't interested in anything except breakfast we didn't really peruse the menu, but I can say that the breakfast options included about a half-dozen omelets plus a daily special, an assortment of pancakes and waffles, meat-intensive steak/egg or chop/egg breakfast plates for full-tilt-boogie carnivores, and other diner standards like corned beef hash. There are also more juices available than I see on most restaurant breakfast menus. (Pineapple? Yes.) Overall, a decent breakfast, and good service once we got into the dining area, but not really a destination restaurant.

I was recently in Petoskey/Harbor Springs area and was looking for a place to have breakfast, just a normal place with out any hype - this is the place. Breakfast is served all day and a decent Bloody Mary is available with breakfast for $3.75 until 4 pm. Service was very good for being up North and the menu displayed a wide variety of items including an Olive Burger (not available to those of us in the Metro Detroit area). I enjoyed the the Eggs Benedict which arrived cooked exactly right. Everyone in my party came away satisfied and the price was right. So if your looking to grab breakfast stay away from the places in downtown Petoskey and head over to Southwood.

Have dined here multiple times and it has become a hit and miss place. Place wasn't busy but hostess still was inattentive to acknowledging and seating us. Waitress was good - made up for poor reception by hostess staff. Asked if I could swap choice of potatoes with my dinner and either pay the difference for the desired choice, or if substitutions were not possible to just buy the desired choice as a side. Waitress left to ask manager and came back and told us no. Seemed odd to deny a customer the purchase of a side potato. It wasn't like they were out of stock. Finally, the food was good.

Hit and miss. Garlic bulb app was served w awesome cheese bread but the head shoulda been presqueezed to avoid sticky diner fingers. Crab cakes = horrible. Escargo Q got was a boat of butter and onions and mushrooms covered in cheese. Eh. Salad and soup were very good. Dinner was so-so. They made my lake perch blackened by request. It was very good. Q had filet it was good. Kk didn't like the chicken stir fry. Jj said the french fries with his mac an cheese were not good. But my battered ones were. Prob wont come back until we've tried other places.

Our waitress, Destiny, was terrific. She was attentive, when she noticed I ordered a side salad with bleu cheese dressing, as well as the steak that is topped with bleu cheese, she brought me an extra cup of bleu crumbles. She gets a 5 as well as a nice tip. Where they dropped to a 4 was serving instant mashed potatoes with canned gravy. Trust me, I recognize it because I do it to my family at home on busy days! The steaks were good, salad fresh, the honey dinner rolls tasty, although they felt microwave warmed. But those potatoes... And...while it is a hard thing to prevent, our table was visited by a fruit fly, an ordinary fly, and an ant who wanted to see what we were eating. He didn't live to tell his family about those potatoes.

We got coupons out of a free newspaper at the Odawa Hotel. Free hamburger with fries if you buy a beverage! We clipped two and off we went. Our bill was under $24 but netted out at $5.08. Our waitress did an adequate job and was tipped $4.92 The burgers were above average. They included all the trimmings and your choice of cheese. Shoestring fries included. At $8.99 per plate, I wouldn't rush over, but I would go there to try other dishes being served. Beers are $2.50 for 12 oz. bottles.

Great value for what I had. I had the Alaskan cod special for lunch and it was extremely fresh. The strawberry shortcake was absolutely outstanding and a great value. The waitress was very helpful and courteous. Nice restaurant.

The waitress was not knowledgeable at all in what they had to offer. I'm not sure if she was new, but regardless, it's poor training. We waited almost an hour for our food and pricing wasn't that great for the food you get compared to other local eateries. I would stay far away from this place as much as possible.

We've been to both locations, Southwoods & Northwoods and the food has always been good. I like the whitefish which you can get served many ways. I prefer it blackened. There are many sandwiches as well as great soup and salads. Nice atmosphere and reasonable prices. When you're up north, check it out.

If you stick with their good stuff, you'll be happy. The Michigan whitefish (I had it sauteed with lemon pepper) was fantastic, a real surprise. But a few days later, I had the Shrimp Scampi, six dinky shrimp in an oily sauce with no hint of garlic... and quite pricey. My son enjoyed a good-looking burger, and a classic grilled cheese sandwich. We also had breakfast there, pretty standard greasy spoon fare, fits the bill. The place is kinda run down and tired, but the waitstaff are just great, friendly and kind. The ice cream treats were delicious and reasonably priced. Considering how far off the beaten trail you are in this tiny tourist town, this place did pretty well.

Excellent service! Food was ok but the drinks were great and they have a great bar atmosphere

Probably the worst food I've ever had at a restaurant. The service was terrible the waitress had no clue what was on the menu, there was trash left over from other customers, and it was full of a bunch of sketchy looking characters. The food was soooo over priced my whole family said we should have went to McDonalds and saved $70! I would definitely recommend Kitchen Nightmares to check this one out!

Five Star Fish and Chips with beer! - Large portion of locally / regionally sourced, skinned, fried whitefish with a perfect amount of batter so you can eat everything on the plate. French fries and coleslaw are great too. A couple of lemon wedges and a large affordable beer makes this the one of the best $15 dinners in town.

Friendly and attentive wait staff, fried white fish basket for lunch was delicious, light and crispy batter on the fish and not the greasy, heavy junk other places have. Coleslaw vegetables fresh, plenty of good quality food for reasonable price. I'll definitely go again next time I am in Petoskey!

Great service! Friendly young ladies. Good recommendations. The fresh whitefish was very fresh! Steamed veggies on the side were adequate. My fries were delicious and so was the jumbo shrimp. They served a Reisling from Leelanau Cellars that knocked my socks off. We ordered pie and it was excellent, with real whipped cream.

In a word...awful. Just plain awful. The only saving grace are the servers, mine was very friendly. A quick glance, food is not fresh, it is quickly nuked and served. I started with chili, it was nothing more than HUGE chunks of raw tomato, ugh. The dinner rolls and baked potato were both nuked and rock hard not long after they were served. My chicken teriyaki sauce was a funky shade of orange (again giving me an indication it is all just nuked).

We stayed in Petosky 3 days and went to Southwoods 3 times. The place is big and comfortable with very friendly staff. Lots of reasonably priced options for breakfast and dinner. We didn't try the pizza but after seeing the one delivered to the next table I wished we'd had a chance to go back and try that too. On Tuesday night they were offering 25% off for seniors. They also had ice cream cake that night for only 99 cents and it was a big enough piece that my husband and I shared it. When we're back in Petosky we'll definitely be going there again.

Always friendly wait staff, filling dinners and cold beer. Seems more like a local bar restaurant than a touristy type of place.
