The name is horrifically misleading. Nothing is grilled and there isn't much that is "fresh" about his place. Decent fried fish, but the place reeks of fry oil. I had the perch, cod and whitefish basket. Perch was awful, the cod was good (albeit greasy) and the whitefish was meh. Hushpuppies were fried beyond recognition. Staff was friendly, but if your specialty is fried food, you better hit a home run. Unfortunately, this place is far from it. Try your luck elsewhere in the area.

This place far from disappointed. Friendly staff and very good food. Had the whitefish basket which included 2 big pieces of fish plus coleslaw, hush puppies and fries.

We typically stop when we are in town and some years it's better than others. Fish was fine, tartar sauce was good. Coleslaw a little runny. Pretty expensive for what it is. Water and ice had something in it. We were told to buy bottled or drink at our own risk...

Very good fried fish and also non-fish alternatives. The Calamari Fries special had so much breaking that it hid the flavor and texture of the calamari (some might say that is a good thing.) Shared some of DH's Threes a Crowd featuring a piece each of cod, whitefish, and perch for $13.75. All we're perfectly fried and delicious. The side garden salads were generously sized and fresh. The young woman at the counter was helpful and friendly and the chef came by to ask how we liked our meal. A very pleasant lunch!

At the risk of sounding like a Dos Equis commercial...I don't always eat fish and chips, but when I do, it will come from Freshwater Grill! I don't even want to mess around with amateur fried fish after my visit here. I opted for the "Three's a Crowd" basket--a piece of cod, whitefish, and perch along with the usual hush puppies, fries, and cole slaw. I'm not sure which was my favorite, they were all so good. There just the right amount of beer batter. The tartar sauce, a little different from the usual, was great with the whitefish and perch. I opted for vinegar with the cod and the batter stood up well. I wish I got more of the cole slaw because it was quite good. And I wish I lived closer so I could make it back to check out their fish tacos on Tuesdays.

I've ate here several times. From burgers to the fish tacos-love the fish tacos-and I am never disappointed. Service getting attention at the counter when you first arrive can be a bit slow, but it is worth a couple minutes of your time. You want fast, sitting under a heat lamp service - visit a fast good joint. Love the decor.

Consistently great! My go to for delicious whitefish and chips and respectable fish tacos on Tuesdays. Great food served hot and fresh.

Fantastic food you know what you're going to get and that's always delicious. What sets them apart from any other fast food place is there tartar sauce and coleslaw and the freshness of the fish. This is our go to place when neither one of us can decide.

Went here for the first time, we honestly just picked a random place to go to that was close and this place ended up being absolutely great, good food, nice people, casual atmosphere, perfectly satisfactory. We are from out of town but will definitely stop here again.

This place...by far has the BEST fish and chips that I've ever had! Since my hubs and I were staying in Petoskey during our wedding weekend, we didn't know very many restaurants around the area so my hubs yelped and found the gem. We decided to have a very small reception dinner here and boy am I über happy we did! Since we didn't have very many people (less than ten), this was a perfect very casual place to eat, that didn't close early. To be honest, I wasn't very happy this place was outside the downtown area (not very far maybe 10-15 min away...mind you, I had been driving a ton at this point), but was more than satisfied. I might even say that I enjoyed this place than our reception dinner. Since we were planning on having whitefish for our big day, I opted to go for the cod, that came with French fries, two hush puppies and slaw. The cod itself was crispy with a perfect crust(not falling off or too thick and definitely not breaded tasting) and the piece of fish were quite big. I didn't eat too much of the slaw but the tarter sauce is definitely the BEST I've ever had with fish and chips. Everyone else who had the fish and chips loved it as well. My other friends who order burgers weren't too big of a fan only because their stomach wasn't too happy, but that definitely won't stop me from coming back here when my hubs and I ever go back up north and to Michigan! FYI make sure you place your order/pay first, take a seat and wait for the tasty dish to arrive by a staff!

My wife and I came here near closing time on a Saturday night. Just 2 other couples there when we came in. First, I love the decor. Very imaginative to have old boat motors displayed as art. Place definitely has a 'fishin' theme to it. It's an order at counter, wait for the food to be delivered kind of place. Yeah, it's pretty much all deep-fried food and fish is the focus. I got the cod basket (2 decent sized pieces of cod, fries, hush puppies, cole slaw and tartar sauce) and the wife got a chicken finger basket. I thought my cod was really good. Great batter and the fish tasted just right. Fries were good too. Really love their home made tartar sauce ... Had to fight the wife away as she loved dipping her fries in it! The sauce has a nice fresh dill flavor to it. Wifey's chicken was kind of dry but overall good. Why she got chicken there baffles me! Cashier was friendly and helpful, too. Only negative (and it's typical for the area) is I thought the prices a bit high. Overall we really like Freshwater Grill and will definitely be back.

What a great find for lunch. We both had the whitefish basket. The fish was ample and fried to perfection. It was served with crispy fries and a good coleslaw. The staff was friendly and the decor is casual and comfortable with cozy wooden booths.

I could NOT possibly disagree more!! FIVE STARS you got to be kidding! It was mediocre at best! The employee behind the counter was nice enough. The cod was okay hardly worthy of running back, nothing stood out as being memorable. The white fish was good! Cole slaw was flavorful! The fries were so overcooked we did not bother with them. Refer to pic's... Would not recommend! With so many great restaurants in Petoskey I would go elsewhere. Very disappointed!

I was wary about the high ratings for this place and then I ate here. It definitely lives up to the hype. I have had fish and chips in lots of pubs and fish and chip shops in England and Scotland and the Freshwater Grill would stand up to any of them. All three types of fish are really good, my personal favorite was the Whitefish. The batter is delicate and makes the fish light and not too heavy. The tartar sauce is also very good with lots of dill and capers. Definitely very inspired cooking from the kitchen; I would highly recommend the Freshwater Grill.

They have excellent fish and chips, especially the perch, hand fried to order. The chips are wonderful and the olive burger was delicious also.

We've been vacationing in northern Michigan for years, and I thought we knew all the best places for fresh fish. I was wrong. What a fantastic find. It's all about great tasting, consistently well-prepared fresh Great Lakes fish. These guys do one thing, and they do it extremely well. We spent the day in Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, and we were in the mood for some authentic fish and chips. This place was perfect--we're not usually that lucky! The cod is frozen, of course. But the perch and the whitefish come right out of Lake Michigan, and the crew here does them such sweet justice. Not only was the meal a delight (I had a fish and chips basket called "Three's a Crowd"--perch, whitefish and cod, all beer battered), the aftertaste was sweet and pleasant, like fresh seafood should have. And although it was fried, it was not heavy. The delicate, fresh taste also told me that they change their deep fryer oil often--no corner-cutting here. And their prices are extremely reasonable for what you get. If they can franchise this baby, they're gonna be rich.

This place has great fish and chips. I had the "3's a crowd" basket. The portions were generous. I liked the fries and the hush puppies were delicious.

Best fish in Northern Michigan - hands down

When it comes to fish and chips, this place is top notch! The cod is fresh with a perfect crispy batter that is not too thick. Better than some if my favorites on the coast of Maine. All it's missing is a cold beer to wash it down.

Best place around for whitefish and hushpuppies!! Yum! Their salads are delis' too! Coleslaw has horseradish sauce, so it's a little spicy for me, but my husband loves it. Great owners and friendly staff.

"It is not difficult to be great occasionally; the real challenge is to be good consistently." - Richard Avedon That is one my favorite quotes from one of the great photographers of our generation. But I believe the idea applies just as well to the restaurant biz, perhaps even more so to an independent quick service lunch & dinner establishment. It takes a lot of effort to run a place like this well and consistently month after month, year after year. Today we visited Freshwater Grill again for lunch. Two and half years after my initial review, five vacations, with a visit for each one, and every time has been just what we expected: terrific whitefish and perch, with a thin, crispy and flavorful crust, and a side of hot hush puppies and crunchy fries. The service was always pleasant and fast. The dining room was always clean. In short, Freshwater Grill has been consistently good, and I'm impressed. That's the path to greatness. Here's hoping that this place will stick around for the next few decades of family vacations. See you again next summer and winter!

This place was a surprise when we first walked in. It wasn't what we expected from a place that had 5 stars. I was doubtful at best. Then we ordered. The staff were so nice and helpful. They were personable and probably some of the best customer service I've experienced in Michigan. The food was amazing. My wife does not eat seafood and she liked the cod in my fish and chips basket. Her grilled cheese was the best grilled cheese sandwich either of us have ever had. Everything was amazing. I would go there again if I was anywhere within an hour or so and will definitely visit the area again.

Don't let the location fool you. The food is incredible. I got the trio basket--I highly recommend, but if I'm ever back in the area, I will go for the perch basket because the perch was mind-blowingly good.

Holy fired fish! This is some good food, price are fair but the kids prices are high. Off the beaten path but worth the short drive. Very casual. Hope I just fixed the direction issue but it is NOT in the downtown area.

If you are craving fish and chips and you want it quickly, Freshwater Grill is your place. We were actually the only table in the whole place and our meal was cooked to order. The fish was really fresh and delicious. The added hushpuppies were yummy (I wasn't a fan in the past, but now I am!). Maybe the only one downside (as the other reviewers have mentioned) it is a little pricey, but fresh quality seafood is expensive and I am happy to pay more for good quality. Great place, check it out!
