Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Food is authentic Mexican style . Some days it's better than other days depends when you go and whose in the kitchen . Their house margaritas are excellent though ! Half off pitchers on Sundays . I would recommend them just for the margaritas.

My dad and I were passing thru town and didn't get here until about 3pm; we were immediately seated next to the only other occupied table. My dad ordered from one of the two specials written on the board (written as numbers, not what the food actually was) and I ordered the taquitos mexicano's. We were delivered chips and salsa and our food came in a very timely manner. Each of the chairs are carved and painted into bright Mexican inspired pictures, along with the tables and other art... It was very appealing to look at. Our waitress came by once and asked how our meal was but walked away before we were finished responding. My dad was hoping we would get a refill on our chip basket but we didn't flag her down for it and she didn't offer until she cleared our plates. Now I am all for single moms and sometimes stuff works out that you have to bring your kids to work with you... The waitress had two little girls with her and they were both very well behaved. Our bill came and my dad did not receive the discount that was advertised at the door. While we were eating someone had changed the menu for the dinner service but my dad and I both agreed the number he ordered was the same advertised. The waitress would not give that $1.00 off the bill. I would try the food once more and give it a fair chance; it was just the service was so bad that I almost gave this 1 star. I settled on giving 2 stars because the kitchen appeared to be doing a good job.

I'm surprised this place is still open. As a native Texan new to Northern Michigan, I have been looking for "decent" Mexican food restaurants. The food served at El Ranchero was bland and quite pathetic at best, and the service was the WORST I've ever received. The wait staff spent the entire time we were dining outside on their cell phone with ZERO visits to the table to ask us how our meal was, if we needed refills, etc. To add icing to the cake, the two women waiters began yelling at each other while my wife paid for our bill. We will NEVER visit El Ranchero again and I will gladly tell folks about how crappy our visit was.

Ok. I know I said I wouldn't go back, but decent Mexican food is hard to find around here. I've learned to stick with vegetarian fajitas. You get lots of veggies and toppings. I also get a side of rice and beans. Can't go wrong with that.

The food was absolute crap! My friend ordered a burger and it was no bigger than his fist. While I on the other hand orders a quesadilla Verde and it came out with no meat whatsoever even though I asked for chicken. And the cheese on the quesadilla was Kraft cheese and the "guacamole" is shit; more than likely store baught. I will never come here again.

You can't expect authentic Mexican in Petoskey, MI but this place was great for a chain-like restaurant. Huge portions and the arroz con pollo that's not on the menu was delicious. Waiter was very tentative and prices were decent for the amount of food we got.

Food inconsistent. Wait staff, blah. Guacamole is a watery paste. Salsa leaves a lot to be desired.

1st time visit, the food was absolutely delicious, can't wait to go back. I find the unfavorable reviews very much surprising, check it out for yourself!!!

My husband and I moved to the area from southern California and felt like Mexican one night. Truth be told, I didn't have great expectations since Mexican cuisine is the best in CA, and foods like avocados and tomatoes are fresher back there too. We loved the decor of the restaurant. It was festive and reminded us of CA. Service is friendly, however we had one complaint. My hubby ordered the vegetable fajitas, which listed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots among the vegetables. When they arrived, however, these vegetables were missing. The fajitas were just a greasy, flavorless pile of sauteed onions, green peppers, and tomatoes. Now, if the kitchen ran out of the missing veggies we would have understood had the server just come out to tell us and my husband could have had the option of changing his order. Instead, they didn't say a thing. At least they discounted our check to say sorry. Their queso dip was a bit watery but still tasty. I loved my cheese enchiladas and the house salsa is delicious too. But overall, we concluded that my hubby can make better Mexican food at home.

Food was bland, very bland. Same taste as taco bell but three times the price. Great decor, though. Beautifully painted wood booths.

The staff is great. The margarita specials are good. The chips and salsa endless and yummy. The food is mediocre. You gotta order the right thing. The right thing is not the taco salad (hint to chef: salads have lettuce). It may be the tamales or the chimichanga. If Jose's had a liquor license and a more relaxing atmosphere we would not be back to El Ranchero.

First time customer to El Ranchero and I found the food to be quite typical and maybe just a little better than many Mexican restaurants in the mid-west. Visited with guests and I don't care for a lot of interaction with staff when entertaining and just having a casual meal so I found the service to be just right - when we needed something the waiter was there other than that they did not intrude on conversation. All and all, food was good, prices were in line & the atmosphere was fine. We arrived quite early and by the time we left the restaurant was quite full so I would assume that the food was establishment is quite acceptable overall or it would not fill up - it is tucked out of the way in a small strip mall so it has to be a destination rather than a casual stop in for a meal. I will not hesitate to visit again.

Food is great. Service is horrible. Take out is the best option.

Pretty good. The burritos are what I've had. The loaded ones smothered in the white mexican cheese are good. Drink prices are acceptable and specials are great. The water down their salsa heavily which is a bummer. Split the burrito, it's enough for 2 which makes it a great value.

Dad & I both enjoyed our return visit to El Ranchero. Given the dramatic change in our experience, I think it safe to say that El Ranchero's opening night, was not the best time to review the food or the service.

Glad to see another Mexican restaurant in Petoskey. I was happy with the Steak Tacos, keeping it simple with double corn tortillas.

The food is so bland here, no flavor at all. All of us ordered something different and shared it. There was't one thing that anyone of us thought was truly good. How can this place screw up food that bad? The prices wre too high for the poor quality of food. Forget the wait staff, they don't speak english and trying to get refills for your drinks is impossible. You can ask and ask but you wont get it. Even if you ask for it in spanish, which we did, they act like they dont understand you. Very rude, arrogant, snotty staff. They are not good with kids either. So to sum it up, terrible horrible food, bad rude service and overpriced everything. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Stay away!!!
