Despite the name - don't get the Mexican food. I will make an exception for the chile relleno which is my favorite ever, but the real gems on this menu are not ethnic. Try the perch, or the open faced roast beef. They make it fresh. I've been going to Desi's on family getaways since I can walk. It is the epitome of a northern MI bar. I love those places that never change, and Desi's is one that doesn't has too. I would eat there nightly if I lived close by.

If you are looking for 'Tex mex' this isn't your place. It more of the traditional Mexican flavor, although the menu might fool you for tex mex. this place has been around forever and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's a popular spot for atv's and snowmobiles. Burgers are great, but the best things on the menu are the fajitas, and the Mexican sandwich. Get the green sauce! It's not too hot but consists of garlic, jalapeños, carrots, and some kind of 'juice' lol; You can even get a steak here if you so desire....

Second visit here. Food is tasty enough. Steak fajitas were a little tough and while plenty of steak is served the onions are in abundance. Wet burrito isn't bad but wife wouldn't get it again she says. Service was ok once someone noticed us sitting there looking famished after several minutes. This was after being nicely greeted at the door, sat without menus and left to sit. Cool atmosphere decent enough food to go back again when we have the urge for some south of the border foods.

Ate here with the family July 3rd and loved the place! Very "up north" feel to the place with excellent food. Service was a little slow , I think because they were so busy, but our waitress was very nice. Started off with nachos that came really fast, and they were good. Fiance and I had steak and chicken fajitas that were delicious. Her parents had the wet burrito and chicken quesadilla that were also very good. Definitely recommend Desi's for a lunch or dinner.

Great place for lunch and dinner (have yet to make it here for breakfast). Finally tried something other than mexican plates last night and went with hot roast beef sandwich. As usual was more than I could eat but good deal and excellent. Fried Ice Cream was incredible. A must visit spot anytime in the Oscoda, MI area.

I've only been to Desi's once. My cousin recommended it for good Mexican food. I was a little nervous when the appetizer was brought out on a styrofoam plate and I wondered, "What kind of place is this anyway?" The rest of the food was on regular plates. I can't imagine why they wouldn't serve up the appetizer the same way. I'm still confused about that. The Marguaritas were about average and the food was tasty. Portions were enormous and we all had left-overs to take home. My sister-in-law had a steak fajita and that looked fantastic. The server got my order wrong and brought my enchiladas with the red sauce when I requested the green sauce. Other than that the service was just okay. Nothing to brag about. I probably won't make the long drive back to go there again.

Food is as good as Taco Bell. Always packed with snowmobiles in the winter. Nice place out in footsite, would like to see another restaurant out there to compete with a bit.

Seems like a decent roadhouse outside Oscoda. My basic sense is that you should treat it like you would most bars. Good place to drink some cheap beers and maybe munch on some appetizers, or grab a meal if you've been out on the river all day, but not really a dinner spot if you've got food on your mind. We got a bunch of the Mexican dishes based on the name and the fact that others mentioned it on here. You certainly get a lot of food, but it reminded us mostly of school cafeteria "Mexican" day. You really do get the weird yellow gloopy "cheese" on your nachos and everything. Nice folks, decent atmosphere, just know what you're going for...

Between the rumors of roaches in the kitchen, and the refried beans being too many days old. It's a wonder this place is still in business. Their prices are ridiculous, and their food is terrible. I have never left without being sick. You can see right into the kitchen, and witness employees not washing their hands properly. The wait staff is beyond rude. One old lady in particular who is always there, never even tries to be friendly with people. Perhaps she's bitter that she's worked at such a terrible establishment for so long. I refuse to go back. At least the atmosphere is cool.

My boyfriend and I had been driving around the area for the day and decided this looked like a cool place for dinner. When we walked in the door we were literally starving, and so we asked the waitress if chips and salsa came with the meal, like they do at a lot of Mexican places. Apparently, this was a big mistake because she went into a lecture about how nothing is free here and if we want chips and salsa we have to pay for it. Okay, then... We opened up the menu and saw that this isn't really an actual Mexican restaurant. They have basically like a Ram's Horn/ Coney Island style menu with just about everything, burgers, etc. One of the menu pages focuses on Mexican type food. Since we walked in expecting Mexican, we both decided to go with that. I got a chicken quesadilla, he got an open-faced sandwich, and we ordered chips and nacho cheese as an appetizer. The chips and cheese came on a styrofoam plate, which was a little weird, but I love that goopy liquid cheese, so it was delicious to me. Our food came. The waitress made a couple more weird comments. My boyfriend liked his food, mine was just okay. The quesadilla tasted like one you would get at Ram's Horn, not very authentic and made with frozen chicken from a bag. Needless to say, I do not think I would come back here if I was in the area again.

Just cuz its my home hood I gotta make a couple corrections. Desi's is on the AuSable River and really is no where near Saginaw or Saginaw Bay unless you call a 1.5 hour drive close .. And your right, you can find better Mexican other places but if you have spent the day on the lake or pond and are sunburned and happy and don't want to cook .... there is NO BETTER PLACE ON EARTH THAN OSCODA and some Desi's. And if you never get to Oscoda Michigan to try it them you are missing more than some slightly odd Mexican food. It's not any kind of Mexican I've ever had any place else but ...... I have an emotional connection to the place. My dad brought us here at least once a week for most of my life at home !! He LOVED Desi's !! And if you go in not expecting some traditional Mexican or tex mex then you can LOVE Desi's too !! I have only gotten the Chicken and Vegetable Enchiladas for as long as I can remember which is weird cuz at like 8 or so -- I'm not sure I loved vegetables but whatever it was .. it's stuck with me and maybe even helped inspire my food obsessions. It is a strange item but it's really good -- if I described it -- you would think i was nuts so just try it. And the chips -- fresh hot and deep fried !! YUMMMMMM I know -- clearly it's personal for me with Desi's but if you get up that way -- it's a place worthy of your hard earned dollars !!!

The food was horrible. The chile releno was microwaved. The guacamole tasted canned. Tacos were like greesy saw dust. Go to Taco Bell, grab a six pack and you'll have a better meal.

its was alright you can tell these people have never had any real mexican or even mexican american food. way over use of i suspect canned and froozen items including chez whiz. Really you might as well go further and get some taco bell its about the same really. And for natalie i suggest she looks at a map you will see that you are at the northern entrance to the saginaw bay lol. you can swim south and east to the thumb of michigan. I had the chimichanga, chicken enchilada, and a roast beef burrito. They were all okay but seemed like Desi has been missing for awhile the flavor is missing too. I just dont understand why places allow this to happen it costs very little to just make things better and will attract people from miles away.

This is an Oscoda must. Just so you can get an awesome smothered burrito. I have the luxury of getting quality Mexican food all the time in Colorado but none of them ever really compare to Desi's. You may regret eating there a few hours later, especially around company but trust me...it's worth it!

I have been coming here so long, I actually remember when the place was still owned by Desi. My uncle was once stationed at the now closed Wurtsmith Air Force Base and learned about it then, but we have been coming back ever since we built our beach house in Oscoda. The main reason my family have been coming here so long (over 30 years) is the nachos. The combination of their homemade chips and salsa with the completely horrible for you cheese would make a grown man weep. I have even had requests from back home to bring food back with when I go (even though it is a three hour drive). And, if you have any room left after the MASSIVE portion sizes (I recommend finding a "dinner buddy" in your group and splitting a meal), give the fried ice cream a try; you will never be the same. It is a dive, but in a good, funky sort of way. Do not let appearances fool you, this place is definitely a diamond in the rough.

alright... for those of you that get up north (which is the single most ridiculous moniker michiganders use... yet we're all familiar with the concept) to the saginaw bay area there's a town called oscoda (just north of the saginaw bay on lake huron) north on 23 past east tawas. if these towns all sound like distant solar systems to you, forget it... you'll never have desi's and you can find alot better mexican downtown. but if you do get up there once in awhile, it's a cool little dump and the food isn't bad if you get the right thing. you have to head west on river road once you get into oscoda and drive like 20 miles on river. it'll seem like you're heading into nowhere, and suddenly desi's will appear when you'd lease expect it to. a nice little stop on the way is a "lookout point" that sits over the au gres river and you can take steps down to put your feet in the river (or you could sit in the parking lot and "neck" with your significant other). i peed on a tree... so that's another option if you just can't wait. don't sit down or place anything you might consider of value on the small stump just to the right of the staircase heading down to the river. trust me. so, we got to desi's and it's seat yourself. we start with the chips and salsa and an order of guacamole. i make an absolute killer guac, so i'm pretty demanding, but for $6 (i know!) it was pretty good... but christ... that's a lot for guac. but the good part is that by the time we were done with our chips there was enough guac left for the meal... so bonus for that. also, a basket of chips cost $3.50. the two of us didn't finish one, but that still burns my ass to pay for chips. ON THE OTHER HAND, they are the deep friend ones, and they are damn delicious. chips can actually make a mexican restaurant for me (and a lot of you, i'm certain). i had the wet burrito which was really good. the rice on the side was okay, but the beans weren't that great... haha... my g-f's exact words were "i don't like beans that were put on my plate using an ice cream scooper" and i'm kind of with her on that one. but it's got some full beans in it, so it wasn't that bad, i guess. she didn't like her tacos. she felt like the meat didn't have any spices on them... it was just meat in a taco shell. other than that, she didn't really have any "beef" with her meal... yucka yucka. ugh... sorry about that one.
