Based on the good reviews of this restaurant we decided to try backyard bbq. What a disappointment! In the first place it was not a good value. The pulled pork sandwich, their specialty, left you hungry. The optional sides were small and expensive, about half a cup of potato salad for $1.15. Plus it obviously was not house made. You can pick it up at the grocery deli. The one choice of bbq sauce was basic grocery store variety. We left hungry after spending over $17 for the two of us. If your craving bbq or pulled pork go elsewhere

The BBQ pork has good flavor. Not a fan of flatbread but that's a personal preference. As far as flatbread goes theirs is good. Marinated vegetables I had were a little bland.

Very interesting take on BBQ. I really enjoyed the flatbread with pulled pork.

Whoa this was way better than I expected. The meat is so flavorful and it's nice and clean inside. also quick and inexpensive! They put the bbq in a piece of warm flatbread and wow it was good!

Best pulled pork sandwich you'll ever have! The flatbread and slaw are a perfect pair with the pork! I recommend this place to everyone!

Go here! I have gone here weekly for 11 years. It is my go to lunch spot. Fantastic bbq and sandwiches made consistently and well! Best kept secret of Okemos!

Wow this place is great!! A hidden little gem! My husband and I were driving on our way to the west side of the state, and wanted to stop someplace quick for lunch. We passed this place just as I was yelping places to eat around us, and the previous reviews were good, so we stopped. And wow we are so glad we did! The service was great; very polite staff. We both ordered pulled pork sandwiches, which come with coleslaw on them. The meat and slaw come wrapped in a warm pita, which is very delicious and fresh. The meat was tender, moist, and perfectly sauced. The BBQ sauce was sweet, and slightly tangy. Delicious all around. The slaw on it was a perfect blend of tangy and sweet, a nice crunchy compliment to the tender pork. I ate the whole thing! I had a side of baked beans, which were good. We were very impressed and will definitely be back!

2.5 stars 1 for cleanliness, 1 for cheerful service, half star for food It's a lunch counter/sandwich shop that happens to offer a few barbecue selections. "Picnic" themed interior dec. Sufficient tables, insufficient napkins. Moist wipes would be helpful. The pulled pork sandwich avoided dryness because it was dripping a sweet tomato-y bottled sauce (not my favorite flavor). A few dashes of hot sauce from the bottle on the counter helped cut the dessert effect. Meat varied from pulled strands to big chunks, but had good slightly smoky flavor. The cole slaw topping also dripped sweet slaw sauce. The unusual flatbread wrap was a nice touch because it had the tensile strength to stand up to all the moisture. Potato salad was refrigerator cold (i.e., way too chilly) standard food service prepared salad. The ingredients seemed to be only potatoes and mayonnaise. No onion, celery, radish, dill, parsley, or anything else with taste. Edible, but flavorless. Bottom line - Come here if you're nearby and want a quick inexpensive sandwich or lunch plate. But if you're craving true barbecued meat dishes and tasty sides, go elsewhere.

3.5 stars... four stars as a sandwich place, 3 stars as a BBQ joint. Definitely not traditional BBQ - sandwiches are served on grilled pita with a host of toppings. Will have to try more items to see if my BBQ taste buds are satisfied (such as the meat plates). The deli/coney items on the menu also detracted from my expectations. But the sandwich was surprisingly good. Watch for the update... Tried the pulled pork; comes topped with slaw, sauce, and cheese. A good deal for $5.50 - seems light, but a rather filling sandwich. As I've never had this pita concoction before, I was skeptical... but the flavors worked well and it held together nicely. I guess I'm just used to meat on a bun, but this creative excursion was a nice detour. Smoker is allegedly out back, and the pork had good flavor and smoke, although some bites were a tad chewy. Yes, they're easy to drive past, but there's plenty of parking if you find it. Interior is oddly decorated, but who cares - I came for the food. Note: it does close a bit too early for my normal late dinners so probably make this a lunch stop.

I was in Green Acres to have talkstoofastformetounderstand's car serviced. Expecting to be out of the dealer before noon, I had no lunch plan. Getting out after noon and very hungry, I fired up Yelp! and let it's cadre of semi-professional food critics lead me to a great place. Good move on my part. BBBQQ (I made that up-can you tell?) is a clean and simple (read minimalist) eatery that offers a unique take on that summer fav-the BBQ sandwich. Your choice of meat served on a flat bread with cheese and sauce. No fried sides. I ordered the same sandwich as Cristina F's BF: beef with cheese & onions. Then in typical guy fashion I ignored her warning against having the 'tater salad (hat tip to Ron White). I have to say I was pleased with my choice. My love of 'tater salad (Ron White nod #2) my MIGHT have influenced that a little. Backyard Barbeque was a gem. Hopefully talkstoofastformetounderstand rips through the miles leading up to her car's next service trip quickly!

Backyard is a great place for lunch. It's a fantastic choice that beats any other chain sandwich shop that runs abroad in Lansing. Never categorize Backyard as a barbeque restaurant though, if that's what you're looking for. This is strictly sandwiches and easy fare. I recommend the barbeque chicken sandwich with a side of baked beans (although the sandwich should fill you up by itself). Make sure to get a cup of extra barbeque sauce to cover your sandwich; I find the sauce to be a bit light when served ordinarily. My favorite part about the sandwich is the relationship between the melted cheese and pita bread... That last part makes me sound like a fat person. But it's sooo good...

Not worth the money and the service was bad

Oh Backyard BBQ! How I just happened to stumble upon you after nearly a ten year hiatus. I forgot what great sandwiches you offer! Service and food is GREAT!!! I recommend the New Yorker!!!

We visited Backyard on our quest to survey every restaurant in Lansing.. I can say this one got the thumbs up for lunch in the Capitol. They've got the funky capital hours (10-3) so don't come for a lazy dinner though... I had the pulled pork sandwich served on the yummy flatbread which was very good. The pork was seasoned & sauced perfectly (not too overwhelming but still BBQy); the warm flatbread was a great way to package it. My BF had the beef sandwich (in the same flatbread) with chese & onions & it was also very good. The sides, however, are limited to macaroni & potato salad, bagged chips, veggies & flatbread. I wouldn't suggest the potato salad. I'll revisit for many lunches to come I'm sure...

Pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on pita...yum yum yum! The best sides are the veggies or the Sun chips. I don't personally know of any other BBQ sandwiches in the area (doesn't mean there isn't any though!), but it wouldn't matter as I love them here. Unfortunately, they are not open on Sunday, which for some reason I'm always wanting one then and half the time forgetting they're closed. Big John's is the next best place to hit if you do that. ;-) I've not tried any other sandwiches here, but I'm sure there is enough to choose from to satisfy most everyone. The gyros sounds good but I always end up getting bbq...Once I find something I really like, I usually stick with it. Give it a try and let everyone know what YOU think! :)

For what it is, I think they do a pretty god job. This is basically a barbeque sandwich restaurant. Its not flashy, their menu isnt huge, but what I had tasted pretty good (BBQ beef sandwich). Its a quick, convenient place to eat lunch if your in a hurry and its located smack in downtown Lansing.
