This is the place that finally made me sign up for yelp to do a review. I believe that everyone deserves to know how amazing this place is. The prices are great, you can go in with $50 and eat like you're royalty. The staff has been very accommodating on every visit that I have had, allowing me to order food as I desired. Most restaurants that I have tried to freely order from, want to remain stuck to a strict structure of you get the menu, you make the choices, they take the menu and you have you you ordered, and that is all with deserts being an exception. That isn't an issue at El Tapatio, they have no problem letting me keep the menu and make my choices about what more I would like to order if I'm still hungry after the first thing that I ordered. If you have never tried tacos de lengua, I would definitely recommend getting them here first. It is a difficult dish to prepare properly, and they manage to consistently pull it off. It was something that I had once before visiting here, and did not enjoy. If you haven't already been here, and are in the area, make sure to give this place a chance.

Great hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint. Stopped in here one day for lunch. There's nothing spectacular about the location or ambience. However the tacos are great! My only beef was that there were no free refills on pop. When in the area we will eat here again.

The best, if not only, AUTHENTIC, Mexican restaurant in Muskegon (probably within 30+ miles). Almost everything is freshly made, in house, and they will alter items to match your preferences (if necessary). The place is small but very quaint and clean. The service, for us, has always been friendly and efficient. The portions are just right and the prices are extremely reasonable. Do yourself a favor and give them a try!

Great authentic Mexican. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu here.

This place is great and is shockingly affordable! (99 cent tacos on Tuesday!). They also have a lot more to offer outside of that. One of the few Mexican restaurants I've visited around here that serve meatless enchilada options. If you're a vegetarian and looking for some Mexican options this will do the trick!

Good authentic Mexican food. I got the house wet burrito and though it was not anything special it was still really good. My friend got the Rosanna Tacos and they were impressed.

I was in need of a restaurant that would deliver a gift card to my VA team at longerdays.com . I called El Tapatio and they took care of this for me and did as they said they would. Cant personally comment about the food, but I am told this is THE place to go by my VA. Thank you for going the extra mile in helping me do something nice for me VA in Muskegon

Very good tacos and different than those you find in most Mexican restaurants ( thick corn shells freshly fried, thicker than a tortilla). Cost was reasonable, but dining area was very small. The entire building was about the size of a 2-3 car garage. The chips & salsa were average.

Good food, had appetizer, two tacos and desert for $11.00. Great prices, neighborhood a bit scary.

Service situation is a little odd. I ordered carry out and sitting there, I watched the servers and cashier disappear leaving the few customers alone. The guac was very good. Trying to make dinner plans for a couple days from now and wondering if this would be a good choice. Anybody else got a review on the Chile rellenos?

The tacos were ok. I've had better at several places in Grand Rapids. The service was slow but that is not always apparent as to why. Slow in the back? One waitress? Who knows. The tacos were also barely warm and tortillas were stiff.

My wife bit into my taco. Her eyes slipped closed with pleasure. "What do they put in there," she moaned, "crack?" I tried to take it back and she snapped at my fingers. So I reached for her tamale. Grudgingly she released the home-made tortilla filled with perfectly seasoned pork. Yeah. It's like that. I have lived most of my life in Arizona and California, places known for their Mexican food, and this little place can hang with the best.

I love the Mexican style tacos with cilantro and lime. Everything I have eaten there has been great. So glad they are right around the corner from me.

Had dinner here a few nights ago. Place has about 12 tables and was seat yourself when we arrived. I had the Tinga dinner (~$8) which was two flour tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken in a sauce with melted cheese. A little spicy (in a good way). Came with a side of shredded lettuce topped with guacamole- the guac was very good. Also came with a side of rice which you would think had a lot of flavor by looking at it, but was dry and bland. One companion had two seasoned beef tacos and was happy although thought they were too mild in the spice arena. Another companion had the chicken quesadilla (~$4.25) - which had sizable chunks of chicken that appeared to be heavily seasoned with black pepper. A little greasy but she liked it. Very authentic - I peered into the kitchen and saw all the notes everywhere written in Spanish. I would say 4 stars on the food (except the rice) and 3 stars on the service. There were two waitresses yet only ~ 4-5 tables had guests. Despite this, the waitresses disappeared at times for quite a while... not sure why. We weren't greeted for a while after we sat down (i.e. brought menus or said hello to). Once we ordered, food came out fairly fast, but when we were ready to pay, they were once again nowhere to be found. We ended up waiting up at the register for our bill. So if you've got nowhere to be and want a relaxed meal, recommend. 3 1/2 stars.

It smelled great the minute we opened the car door in the parking lot. My daughter got to add to her bottle collection with a Mexican Coke (made with cane sugar). I had a plate of very good chile rellenos. The tamales with pork were excellent as well. Tacos can come American style or Mexican style, which I thought was interesting: Mexican is with onions and cilantro, American is cheese & lettuce. Some very odd points though - one of us ordered a Chimichanga and it was all meat, apparently pretty bland meat at that. No sauce, no cheese, no veggies, nothin'! Fajitas came with no rice or beans (although was still a fairly generous portion). Finally the iced tea was made with instant powder (or at least tasted like it). The lone waitress was slammed and service was slow but cheerful. She forgot to take the order of half our party and we had to remind her. On the whole, decent service though. Nothing was horrible, and we certainly didn't get up and walk out. We probably won't walk back in though.

Can't believe this place doesn't have a review on yelp yet... found it through google maps where its got rave reviews... anyways I'll put a plug for it here! I grew up in Tucson, it's hard to find authentic Mexican food - but this is soo much better than anything else within a 40 mile radius (and that includes Grand Haven etc). So its getting 5 stars. Other places like el camino's is more like a huge serving of taco bell doused in over-bearing cumin sauce. El Tapatio serves freshly chopped onion, tomato and cilantro in their tacos, as well as lime wedges - the freshest food I've had since I've been out here. They also have tons of meat choices - the menu is really great. They cover a broad choice from quesadillas to chimichangas and other more traditional and interesting dishes. The prices are very very reasonable too for the quality and options. They also have days with different specials like Taco Tuesdays for $.99. Combo dinner plate is excellent and of course the tacos are just as good, and the chicken enchilada is also great. Has a simple, cozy charming decor, would highly recommend over other local Mexican fare in the area any day.

Mexican food is my favorite, and El Tapatio serves it so very well. I recently moved from Muskegon, MI to Jacksonville, FL and have missed this place so badly! (I'm also a fan of what used to be Pablo's Taco's, but that is another review). The servers that work here are usually overworked, but so super friendly. Their chips and salsa are delicious. My favorite is their taco salad, but the fajitas are wonderful as well.

The food is great here, it's everything you would expect from an authentic Mexican place. While at the same time offering options that are comfortable for the American palate. Unfortunately the service is extremely slow, especially if you go on Tuesday or Thursday for dollar taco day. Today we waited 15 minutes before being greeted, then it was another 20 minutes before we received our meals, which were great as always.

I've gone by this place a million times without going in and decided to finally try it the other day... I'm so sad I didn't stop in before. Really great food, fantastic prices, great service. All around awesome.

The authentic Mexican tacos are amazing. Deep fried with enough give to stay together when you bite into it. The tacos are definitely the best thing on the menu. Second, for me, are the chicken enchiladas. I will admit that Taco Tuesday's can get some slower service but it's worth it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
