This place is now called Bombay Grill for whatever reason. Their licenses say L1 Bar and grill. The place looks like a night-club with buffet tables. weird. There is a bar, but no bar-stools. (similar to a night club). Seems like it used to be a night club in the night before. I have tried various dishes from them. bhindi masala, baingan bharta, veg jalfrezi, aloo paratha etc. Good thing about them is that none of the dishes taste alike. Which is a problem with many Indian restaurants. But they also don't taste like anything i have tasted anywhere before (including India). It is a mystery.

Indian buffet restaurant by day and a low-class nightclub by night.

The buffet is genrally very good. A little bit more selection would be nice but they have enough variety to make it worth it. The food is good. The fresh baked naan (bread) is delicious. The buffet price is good but they go down a star since the menu is a bit pricy and the ambiance is like a bar which I don't care for. Honestly though I am just glad there is a place to get Indian food in town. You will find a little bit better Indian places in Midland or Lansing but that's a bit of a drive.

SUPER GOOD!! Wish I had gone sooner! A family friend had an event catered by L1 (which also goes by "Bombay Grill" now) and I had never had Indian food, but I'm willing to give anything a try. It was ALL amazing! I couldn't keep away from the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Naan bread. I'd been wanting to visit the restaurant ever since, but my wife isn't very willing to try new stuff. Well, I finally got her to go and even picky, little her loved everything we tried! The Butter Chicken is addictive. At spice level 3 of 5 it was perfect; just enough zip. we ordered the Assorted Bread which has the Garlic Naan, the Cheese Naan (with Paneera), and the Onion Kulcha. It was all great, especially the Garlic Naan. I could just eat a stack of this stuff. The Chicken Tikka Masala was just as tasty as I had recalled and the Jeera Aloo was a great side dish (Potatoes and Green Pepper grilled with spices). A lot of Yelpers seem to be complaining about the prices, which I don't get. For instance: the Assorted Bread is three kinds of Naan for $7.95 and is literally THREE baskets of naan with 4 or 5 slices in EACH basket. And pretty much EVERYTHING on the menu is less than $10, unless you're getting lamb or shrimp, so unless you squeeze blood from pennies it's not particularly expensive. It did take a minute or so for the hostess/waitress to come and greet us when we came in, but was super attentive and friendly the rest of our meal. The owner even came over and thanked us for coming. The atmosphere is a little strange as it looks liker a straight up night club and you feel like your eating on a dance floor (because you are...), but the food BY FAR makes up for any shortcomings in ambiance. Go once and I guarantee you'll go back.

THANK GOD MT PLEASANT HAS SOMETHING OTHER THAN BURGERS. Seriously though. I love Indian food, actually it is my favorite kind of food. Sadly this is the only Indian option in Mt. Pleasant. If I wanted to try a different Indian restaurant I would have to go to Lansing or Midland. That being said, I visit L1 3-4 times a month for dinner and the Indian buffet. I have only looked at the menu once and that was my first trip, reason being the prices are outrageous compared to the buffet. PROS: L1 has a dinner buffet every single day! Unlimited fresh naan. When I say fresh, I mean they literally start making it the minute you sit down. The naan might be my favorite thing about L1 and what sets it apart from any other Indian restaurant I have been to. Usually over six options to try with every buffet. Decent flavors in everything I have tried so far. They give Mount Pleasant a very necessary dash of diversity. Awesome drink specials. CONS: Food is rarely changed out at the buffet. I am not sure how they go about checking on the buffet but at times the rice as been crunchy from being in the buffet line too long. I have also gone for a certain dish and it will only have 3 pieces of vegetables or a few chunks of meat. Pretty disappointing. The staff at L1 is very young and they have a tendency to talk shit about previous customers complaining. Last thing you want to hear when you are trying to relax. It is unbearably cold in this restaurant. I bring a sweatshirt with me every time I go so I don't have to wear my huge coat while eating. The seating and tables are horrible. You can tell they are very cheap and very uncomfortable. I know L1 is a night club after 10pm or so, so I'm not sure if they move the tables or what once the partying starts, but either way it makes actually staying in the restaurant an unpleasant experience.
