Don't judge Marquette based on this restaurant! Marquette is pretty, but the food around here is pretty damn bad. Practically no choices or variety, which makes it hard if you're visiting. Should we have been surprised that there was a 45 minute wait for dinner on a Monday night? That was only the beginning of the disappointment that preceded the meal. Food was mediocre at best. We had the salmon burger, the whitefish chowder, the french onion soup, and the special of the day: stuffed whitefish. Bland, overpriced and overrated. The beer won the 2nd star for me. We tried the blueberry wheat and the peach wheat and they were GREAT. The only problem was when we got the bill and they charged us $1 each for the "sample" we asked for prior to ordering a beer. I've never been to a microbrew where they charged for a taste of the beer to see if we liked it. Definitely not worth the 45 minute wait.

Nice atmosphere. Good beers. Blah food.

The flagship brewery of the UP, the Vierling has always been a very consistent restaurant that offers some of the best beer the UP has to offer. On my yearly trip up north, we made our way to the Vierling for the umpteenth time. Its a great spot in Downtown for a lunch and a beer and never disappoints. Of course the whitefish is delicious (we're in the UP aren't we?) and their sandwiches are all very good as well. Best part is you can take your beer to go. They offer growlers of just about everything on tap and it's a great way to enjoy these beers at your camp. Their Pale Ale is the go-to, which is why they have a hard time even keeping it on tap. The red is good as is their wheat. The porter was a little too coffee-y for my liking but everyone I was with enjoyed it. Really just a great bar. If you are in Marquette and looking for a lunch, look no further than this joint. It's well worth your time.

good food and drink. nice view of the lake. good fast service.

This is one of my three favorite micro-breweries in Michigan, the beer is excellent. The blueberry wheat is a stand-out amongst many others I've had across the state and the country for that matter. If I could I would hold the brew master hostage until he gave me the recipe. Their Pine Mountain Pale ale was one of the most interesting and delicious Pale Ale's I've had in quite some time. The food is good too, the whitefish (served any way) is definitely a specialty of theirs (my friends and I actually watched them get it from the fish store on the harbor). Burgers and sandwiches are really good too. My only regret was forgetting to bring my growler with me for a fill up...oh well, guess I'll have to remember it for next time.

I hope you don't have more than 5 people that you want to eat a meal with, because It's not allowed at Vierling's. My family was in town for a reunion and chose Vierlings as the place to eat. We called to make a reservation for 9 and were told that they only allow reservations for up to 6. My mother grew up in Marquette and loves the whitefish that comes from Lake Superior's waters. We chose Vierling's as the spot to enjoy the local food as well as some local brew. Usually a fan of chowder, I was very disappointed in the overly thick texture. The few pieces of fish were drowned out by the gross texture, huge amount of potatoes, and bottle of dill that was dumped into it. I also ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer. I can honestly say that it was the worst one I've ever had. The mixture was drowned in balsamic vinegar and so acidic that I couldn't eat it. There were a few bright spots. Their brews were good. We ended up ordering some to take away later that weekend. Our waitress was also very good.

I went here based upon a strong recommendation from my parents (which hasn't always worked out). This time however, my parents were right. The service was attentive but not overly so. The beer is fantastic. The whitefish chowder soup was great as well. I had the grilled whitefish for dinner and it was prepared perfectly. I'd love to go back next time I'm up this way.
(5)Jim K.
Fantastic spot. I am a out of towner, and I was looking for good food and drink. The beer was great. Home brew, with a unrefined taste. Excellent though. The food was good, but the entrees were missing something. Great salad. The fish options were dizzying. I would recommend. This place didn't lil your pocket either.
(4)John M.
Dry overcooked fish and chicken. Ten of us ate there and all had the same complaint. Rice poorly done again, as it has been for years. Same rice and beans for sides for over 15 yrs. The place is living on its reputation as the best place to go. The beer is what saves them. Stick to pub food when in Marquette. Don't try to find fine dining.
(2)Noreen H.
Stopped here for lunch on a trip up from Chicago. The blonde beer was fantastic and the BLT was great !! The staff was super friendly and there is a lovely view of the lake from the dining room. Would like to return, but it's a 9 hour drive
(4)Dan D.
Great soup and panini. The micro beer was wonderful but @ $4.50 a pop I quickly changed to a PBR which was a wonderful surprise at $2 a bottle.
(4)Nicole D.
Order the blueberry beer and french onion soup and you've got a winning combination at Vierling, an historic restaurant in downtown Marquette. Packed to the gills the night we were there, our group tried a bit of everything but the soup seemed to be the favorite dish. Fast service, decent prices and food everyone can eat. Not bad, not bad.
(4)Kathleen B.
great whitefish and blueberry beer and wonderful service
(5)John C.
I was traveling on business and they sat me down in the back of the restaurant right before 9pm, when the kitchen closes. I waited for quite some time for service, but the server was sweet. I ordered the whitefish which was decent, the sides were below average, but the beer was great. I moved over to the bar and the peach beer was memorable, worth checking out.
(4)Poutine L.
Ahhhhh thinking about blueberry beers and grilled whitefish in August
(4)rachel p.
the dog races made for a busy weekend in marquette, along with some crowded restaurants but our insanely flustered host managed to find us a table. lots of fish specials on the menu (we shared a whitefish in a white wine reduction with lemons and capers). the fish came with a bowl of soup, steamed string beans and rice. the fish was solidly good, the beans and rice were fine (how good can beans and rice be?) but the shining star was the whitefish chowder. the chowder was amazing. the interior was nice, a slightly refined version of eclectic in a beautiful historic building. they've also got a brewery on site that makes a nice blueberry wheat... with fresh blueberries as a garnish! worth a stop in, and judging from the other reviews, you should get soup.
(4)Justin O.
When I went to school in Marquette in 99-05 the choice in town were not as large as they are now for casual to fine dinning! The vierling was always my spot for a comfortable but nice meal. Great homemade drafts, fish and primerib! The view in the back is awesome! I like the Blueberry Wheat! The inside of this place is really cool, as a lot of history is on the walls and the bar itself is old and original! Its the kind of place the owner sits you down, and your feel at ease! I miss Marquette and this little place! Closed on Sundays if I remember correctly! Reservations helpful!
(3)Eric K.
WIth a great view of the harbor and some great food, you can't go wrong the Vierling on a beautiful summer day, or a melancholy winter afternoon. Their menu boasts some great whitefish dishes, great brews and fresh soups. Great stuff!
(4)Steven L.
It was good! I went with the salmon burger and french onion soup along with a couple of the brews on tap. The burger had a tasty caper spread on it and came with a side of slaw. The slaw was not good, not at all. The onion soup was great, covered with cheese. From recommendations on yelp and foursquare I tried the Blueberry Wheat and Peach Wheat which were both very good. If I wasn't on an expense account I would have definitely sampled a few more. If I make it back to Marquette I'll be sure to hit it up again!
(4)Tiger M.
Really good place. Haven't tried the beer but from what I hear it is pretty good.
(4)Eric S.
One of the best restaurants in town. Great food and drink selection. Had some great new years parties there!
(4)Melissa A.
The best place in town for a cozy booth with an amazing beer selection! They make the best Blueberry Wheat! And the beer prices are beyond reasonable considering they brew on site. I will say most of the food I have tried has been satisfying, except for the appetizers. The Spinach Dip should be an embarrassment to serve, not creamy and served with store bought cheap gold round tortilla chips..HUGE disappointment I wanted to go into the kitchen and show the Chef how incredibly easy it is to make Tortilla chips..Also the Cheese plate served with Keebler Club crackers, I mean Really?? I felt like they ran out of decent product and threw together these items. The Vierling is a great place for a beer and the atmosphere but save your money on the food, maybe someday they will figure out that less (quality) is not more.
(4)Amy S.
Loved this place! From the classic pub decor, to the great house beer selection (if you love fruit beers, you have to try the blueberry wheat) and the wide menu - you really can't go wrong there. Came in for lunch, tried a house beer, had a salad (which was awesome for the UP, which is still rather anti-salad), while my companions had everything from a salmon burger, hummus and a reuben. Everyone was happy and impressed with what they got. A real winner and will definitely be back on my next Marquette visit!
(5)JD P.
The Vierling is a true staple in Marquette. A great atmosphere in a great location. The blueberry wheat beer is a must! I wish I could say more positive things about the food but it is really nothing special. Service is hit or miss. With more and more quality restaurants opening in the area, the Vierling needs to step it up to continue to be a top selection for Marquette diners.
(3)Kent G.
An absolute must whenever I'm in town (which is all too seldom). The great thing about the Vierling is that it's totally reliable. You can always count on a good beer and good food here. The atmosphere is also very friendly. It's obviously a place where locals and tourists can both feel welcome, and that's no small trick.
(4)Alfred K.
This is a great little restaurant with very good food and a nice view of the lower harbor. Hardwood floors give the space a slighly sophisticated feel and definite charm. Try the french onion soup!
(3)Kelsey K.
Loved the tarragon salad dressing here. They also have some great chicken picatta.
(4)Barb C.
Food, Service, Atmosphere and Prices are EXCELLENT.
(5)Amy A.
Micro brewery is good, fish entrees are always excellent. They may try to do too much variety with their menu (ex: italian??) but we really like it here. Ask your server for suggestions on menu items. Nice views in the back of Lake Superior and convienent downtown location (parking nearby)
(4)Michael D.
The French onion soup is excellent. Good sandwich.
(4)Frank M.
Good brewpub with interesting brews and good food. The whitefish chowder was excellent and salads very good. The blueberry wheat beer included a few berries and had a strong berry taste. Other beers were good, too. Nice view of the lake in an old downtown building.
(4)Lauren B.
I was a little nervous at first to come and dine here because of some of the reviews written lately. However we took the chance and made our way over for dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful! It reminds of the quaint little bars you'll find over in Ireland. We were seated immediately, being lead to a beautiful booth surrounded by hanging plants and cozy lighting. We ordered the smoked whitefish as an appetizer and it was presented beautifully. The fish was complimented with a dill spread that added to the smokey flavor. After our appetizer our main meal came. My boyfriend ordered the deli salad which was loaded with deli meats and hard boiled eggs. My pesto tortellini was served with the chowder soup and bread. It was so much food for a great price. We were overall very impressed and will definitely come back! The atmosphere, servers and food were all well done.
(5)Matthew V.
Very pleasant atmosphere with a old school trueness. The virility of an establishment can be seen in this throw back to the good days with its tastefully decorated long interior and gorgeous bay view. I quickly decided for fish and chips and the waitress helpfully suggested the Milkshake Stout. The batter on the fish was crisp and the entire meal was fresh. The pairing of the stout was on point and showed the deep knowledge of fine beer pairing. I will recommend going for lunch.
(3)Elaine M.
Went here for a celebration dinner with a large group. The restaurant was very accommodating to our group on a very busy weekend. There were thirteen of us in our group and the service was very friendly and they did not rush us, which was really nice. The seem to be known for their blueberry beer but we preferred the peach beer instead. It was fuller of flavor. We couldn't taste much blueberry in the blueberry beer, The food, as a general rule, was pretty average. We ordered four appetizers, the bruschetta, the nachos, the smoked whitefish and the spinach artichoke dip. The dip was probably the best but not inspired. Our table ordered entrees that ranged from whitefish and chicken to steak, One of the steaks had to be sent back because it was so poorly cooked. I had the whitefish picatta but it was only okay. There didn't seem to be much flavor and the fish was overcooked and dried out for my taste. We also had a selection of desserts. The chocolate peanut butter pie was amazing and really the standout of the desserts,
(3)Reid R.
When I first walked in didn't know who was going to seat me .... wanted a spot in the back so I could see the view told me he didn't have anything available or that if I waited about 5-10 minutes he would have so I sat in the front Waitress was attentive... and so were the NATS in my beer and all over my food and the worst thing was a nice thick black HAIR in my salad .... overall I dont think I'd go back
(3)Ermelinda C.
Great home-brewed beer, fantastic salted white fish (they salt their own fish in a structure nearby), good service and good location. The place looks and feels dated, but I guess that is part of its charm and why visitors find it such an interesting place to stop and dine.
(4)Jarod R.
This is a great place to stop for a beer and a meal. The atmosphere is great, staff always friendly. The food is a little on the pricey side, but always good. The beer is what I come for, I love the Blueberry Wheat Ale.
(4)Joanna S.
Get the beer sampler. The blueberry beer is good/interesting. My nachos were over cooked and just had cheese on the top layer. After that it was basically chips. Atmosphere was casual and fun.
(3)Abram B.
I have never been so humiliated at a restaurant in my life. My wife and I waited over an hour for a seat on a busy night in August. When we were eventually given a table we watched two other tables get service (water and drinks) while we were given no service. After 15 minutes I approached the man who sat us to inquire. He erupted at me and told us to leave creating a huge scene. This continued as we left the restaurant. I have frequented this restaurant in the past. I will never go back again. I feel sick to my stomach based on how we were treated. I've worked in restaurants for years, being busy is not an excuse for abusing customers. My wife and I deserved better.
(1)Christina R.
Stopped in here for lunch after arriving into Marquette from the lower peninsula. Great food and service! Highly recommend checking it out!
(4)Tom K.
I'm only giving one star since that is the lowest I can go. We went waited a little while for waitress. Since we had never been to this area before my husband asked about the fish. Our waitress was very rude and stated she didn't have time for questions she'd come back when we made up our mind. Needless to say we got up and left!
(1)Theresa W.
When you have some free time in Marquette, sit by the window and order a blueberry beer here. Enjoy!
(4)Rajini J.
The ambiance was lovely and the decor beautiful! The food was quite good as well. All the beers were great...I got a sampler as I could not make up my mind and got to try them all! The peach wheat and blueberry wheat beers were the best. The bianca pizza was very good as well. A charming place where the food is good...a great value for your money. If I visited Marquette in the future, I would definitely go back to The Vierling!

My wife, her cousin, and I were out for the night in Marquette last night, and this was one of our stops. Hindsight being 20/20, we would have passed on this place. We were seated at a table right near to the bar at the front window, which was a nice seat to enjoy a drink or two. We were then waited on by Cassidy, who was blah at best. She took our drink order, and was definitely not enthused to do so. Whatever, we were only in here for drinks. She brought our orders which consisted of a pint of beer for me, and the girls split a beer flight. We then were never checked on again by Cassidy. I sat with an empty beer for 10 mins while the girl's beer flight was close to empty for the same amount of time. We ended up grabbing a menu and adding up our order ourselves, and then dropping a $20 bill on the table, as we couldn't even get her to come by to drop the check. We're in Marquette about twice a year, and this place is at the bottom of the list for places we'd return to. If it wasn't for the nice beer selection and nice Front Street location this would have been a 1-star review.
(2)Jessica B.
Came in from a rainy day.. I'm had the blueberry beer.. It was actually really good and had full body and fresh blueberries in it! I wasn't too hungry so I ordered the whitefish chowder! Yummy!! Flavorful with bacon, lots of fish, potatoes and fresh herbs! I'm from New England and this tops some of the best clam chowders I've had!
(4)Marshall P.
Whoever gives this place less than 5 stars will never find the "right" restaurant. They catch their own fish right off Lake Superior, which is within a baseball throws distance and they brew their own beer. I haven't seen a livelier bunch of folks on a Monday night since the Redskins beat the Giants several years ago. The beer is fantastic but the Lake Superior Whitefish is the reason you go - grilled however you like it just know that it is as fresh as they come.
(5)Alana C.
Overrated. While the atmosphere is cool and quaint, the food is nothing special. They made a big deal about the fries. However they are the same pre-made fries that any diner has. Same goes for the chips. What really soured it for me was our waitress. She was brusque and, for the most part, ignored us. While it was lunchtime busy, there was no need for her snappishness. Tons of people love this place. The prices reflect the atmosphere and the building, definitely not a reflection of the food.

We have visited this place twice; once during the lunch menu hours and then again for dinner this past weekend for the dinner menu since it was supposedly different from the lunch. We try to visit different restaurants in the Marquette area since we have a student at NMU, and we motel/hotel it throughout the school year to visit them. The lunch visit was ok. Sandwiches ok. We all agreed that we'd like to experience the dinner menu at another visit. All agreed that the sandwiches/lunch menu at Donckers was far superior to the lunch fare here. Dinner: Vierling hit .333 . The chicken stir fry was rated fine. The chicken Picatta was rated "I'd never order this again," and the Saturday special Prime Rib (soup) was rated blah. Chicken stiry fry: Fine. Picatta: Our eater said it had absolutely way too much oil. And over cooked. Not enjoyable. Prime Rib 'Special': Never seen Prime Rib served on top of a piece of Rye bread. Interesting. But, there was way too much au jus in the lipped plate, which made it hard to cut the meat without slopping over the side. I like my beef somewhat salty, so it was a surprise to me to find this dish WAY too much salty. Since the beef took up the whole plate, my veggie and wild rice side sat on a side dish, where neither of them could easily soak up any beef juices. But since it was a soup on the main plate anyways, that part sort of worked out for a slight, dry, plus. About half way through the beef, couldn't put up with the salty/au jus/rye bread underlayment, so I moved that off to the side. The prime rib meat itself was passable. This is a promoted micro brewery. Hopefully, the brews are better than the food. All three of us were in agreement though: The two meals that we had at the NMU dining Marketplace were better than the dinner that we had here.
(2)C H.
The fish my husband had tonight for dinner was good. I had a burger and it's difficult to mess that up. But there were 5 flies buzzing our table and we were eating at an indoor restaurant. Gross. Our waitress was ok but nothing to brag about.
(2)Kevin L.
Nice pub style atmosphere with beautiful views of the waterfront. The menu was diverse and the food was very good. The fish chowder is excellent. The salmon piccata and the barbecue ribs were also delicious. Being situated over a micro brewery the beer selection is focused on local craft beers. The service was reasonably prompt and courteous. I definitely recommend.
(4)Aaron E.
Good food, great service. Not fine dining, but good quality and a diverse menu. Highly recommend the various preparations of whitefish.
(4)Brian R.
First impression was great. Interesting decor with framed photos of this historical area as well as plenty of brewery nostalgia items. Suit in the dining room for a view of lake Superior. I had the hoppy doubly IP A, not there best but definitely respectable. Had the white fish sandwich which was very yummy. You could tell it was likely recently caught of the shores of lake Superior. Have dinner here then gave dessert at the Ore Dock brewery.
(5)Kate F.
My friend raved all day about the whitefish special - crab cake crusted whitefish; he'd had it multiple times when in Marquette. We both ordered it - he devoured his; I thought mine was disgusting and couldn't eat more than a third. The fish was dry and overcooked, and was spread with what tasted like mostly bread stuffing. Yuck. Baked potato and green beans were delicious :-). Salad with homemade Italian Bleu Cheese dressing was okay. My husband had the Whitefish Bites as a meal. The serving was plentiful, fish was lightly coated and fried to a pleasant brown crust; he was very pleased with his meal. Fourth dining companion had the 4 oz. filet - he said it was great. Beer selections were fabulous - we got the 10 beer sampler - a deal at $13. Note: another friend recommended the grilled whitefish without the topping. I think it would be worth trying if there is a next time.
(1)Maria T.
We had a wonderful lunch. We sat by the window overlooking the lake. The service, food and beer were great!
(5)P G C.
I was very disappointed. I orderef a small pizza and the crust was burned. When I got my bill the server had overcharged me by $2 thinking I wouldn't notice she was very polite and removed it but the fact that she did it annoyed me immensely.
(2)Justin S.
New Yorker in town for business. Went here for lunch with a co-worker. A really cute spot with some great vintage pictures and antiques on the walls which I always appreciate. Awesome view of Lake Superior. The food was delicious especially the potato soup! Decent affordable prices and good atmosphere and service. A good place for the hungry travelers in the area.

Are you kidding me? Can you believe the size of the fish? Let me start from the beginning. Came here for dinner on a weekday. Everyone in town, I spoke to, recommended fish in any restaurant in town. Many suggested the Vierling. So here I was exploring one of Marquette's favorite restaurant. Service was outstanding. My waiter was super friendly and attentive. I sampled a couple of the house brew to go with my white fish. I ended up getting both brews, one after the other to accompany my fantastic meal. Now the fish, hmmmm... Fresh, cooked right, soft and firm. I posted a picture, but yeah I took a bite before I remembered to take the picture. But still, can you see the size of that fish? For the same price I would get a 1/4 of the size, overcooked, and flavorless in a place like hmmm LA. They sure don't skimp out on the capers either. This was one of the freshest, yummiest, memorablest fish I've had. Although, I was here on business, my stay was nothing but pleasure. The Vierling fell nothing short of being one of my favorite places that I've been to, and I long to come back and share my discovery with others. There is so much more that I would like to say about this place; however, I wouldn't want to spoil your discoveries.
(5)Vassilis J.
Of the three breweries in Marquette I found the best beer here. Full bodied and true to their billing the red ale was delicious and the blonde crisp. Their website said they've been brewing beer since late 95' and it shows. They also have double steel lined growlers for sale. We sat in the elevated back room that overlooks the harbor and has a warm, historic charm of framed old photos, exposed brick and paintings that only an old restaurant like this can slowly gather. I ate a heaping plate of pesto tortellini that came with a fresh salad. My buddy got the salmon burger. The food was hearty, straightforward and well done. The young female servers were friendly and quick. Before leaving I bought a few pint glasses with the "Munich child" on them and a tag line that says without poison or drugs. Hilarious. All in all, for me this what a mid-tier, local restaurant should be.

I wanted to show off my hometown to friends from out of state last Saturday. We were not disappointed. We ended our day at the Vierling after a day of bicycling and a climb up Sugarloaf. I was fussy since we were the "tour directors" of the weekend. I had received many recommendations from trusted citizens of Marquette to have dinner here. It was delightful from our first minute in the door. I had reserved a table for 10 and we were gifted with a beautiful view of the harbor in charming surroundings. The waitress was friendly and professional. (Has worked there 18 years.) She guided us through the various beer selections and the menu. What variety! Everyone felt their particular idiosyncratic taste desires were met. We were in awe of the whitefish portions and more so of the taste. I had the picatta - YUM. There were many servings of prime rib and scampi. We were not rushed so were able to relax and enjoy the ambience. Everyone was satisfied and impressed - so was I. I will definitely be back. Thank you.
(5)Alex K.
Came in for lunch with family. Nice seating. Fantastic view. Quick service. Good beer and a lovely "Texas Burger Special." Seeing as I am from Texas I had to get it. It passed with flying colors. Would return for more great eats and awesome view. Oh, and beer too.
(5)JL J.
Located on Front Street off the harbour in Marquette, MI, the décor is beyond comparison and the view of the harbor is stunning. The wait staff is excellent and very knowledgeable about the beers and about the food. This place is nice. It isn't a life changer but it is absolutely solid. The front room is brick and offers an old-timer feel; it also has a lovely view of Lake Superior. This place is definitely worth your time. The menu provides many choices for appetizers, salads, soups, burgers, plus cold and hot sandwiches. The vegetarian in the group faced the difficult decision between the Feta Panini, the Goat Cheese and Beet Salad or the Grilled Muenster and Roasted Tomato. However, opted for the vegetarian stir fry, which ended up being very flavorful but could have used more rice in the dish. The salads were fresh and crisp with plenty of dark greens. The selection of microbrews was fantastic. The IPA's were very refreshing. Apparently, patience and cheerfulness pay off here as their busiest times are at the beginning and ending of the college terms. Other times there is often a short wait, but nothing like when it is "back to school time". Reservations might be best, especially if you have a large group. If you visit Marquette, and miss this place, it would be unfortunate. Cheers, Jordan & Marks

Skipped the entrees and went straight for the smoked whitefish app, French Brie app, and topped it off with a blueberry beer. Quaint pub, with a nice view.
(4)College S.
First the bad....it was shockingly quite loud as IF it was in someone's back yard. This and only this has kept from going back. Now the good...the waitress who served me was very friendly and outgoing. She truly made this place shine very bright. Also...due to selection of beer I couldn't begin to guess what I wanted to get. However...she gladly gave me nice size samples of about every beer they had (very thoughtful and generous) and the beer there was the BEST! As far the food the whitefish it was extremely good with decent size portions - Nice!
(4)Kathy W.
Stopped in for lunch. Great service - killer spinach salad with cajun chicken. Great choice.
(3)Marlena L.
Everything about this place was excellent - service, ambiance, food and atmosphere. Price and portions were also good. This was my family's first visit to the U. P. , since whitefish is the big thing in this area we had to try some. We came to the right place, we had it smoked, blackened, and piccata style. All three were delicious! Not only was the food top notch but the customers were extremely friendly too. My family felt so comfortable meeting and talking with some of the locals. It was amazing how many friendly people we met. Another memorable thing was the signature blueberry beer. Interesting. The location is nice, right by the lake. We had a nice stroll while waiting on a table. The only not so good thing I remember is the booth size. Tight! I've never felt so big and burly. Seriously, this was not your average sized booth. Needless to say it didn't stop me from eating. I sincerely hope I get another opportunity to dine here.
(5)Barbara H.
Great food if you plan on eating white fish. Blueberry beer is a nice treat too. I have eaten here many times and find the fish the only sure thing on the dinner menu. Lunch items give you more choice that are good, but only served at lunch. Last night we had nachos and only 1/2 the cheese was melted and the taco salad was just strange. Lovely antique atmosphere, but the booths are unbearable to sit in and so small they barely fit 4 people.
(3)ArchaeoFiero S.
Tasty, freshly made food, good service, and an incredible antique-pub atmosphere. The crafted beers are great, and I usually go for one of their IPAs, which are really hoppy and delicious. Also, they sell their smart 16oz Vierling Beer glasses for $4. You must get the smoked whitefish appetizer, which comes with toast, a dill cream cheese sauce and apple slices. Other musts are their whitefish chowder and the chilli.
(5)Vanessa V.
The kitchen had already closed when we arrived so we just ordered the beer flight and split it up so I got the fruity beers and M got everything else (including: drunk). Nothing was outstanding except the ambiance. Our bartender was kind of cold and rude until M started schmoozing her, and then suddenly she's our tour guide. I don't know exactly how to read that except that she's way over-educated to be serving a bunch of frat guy beer and probably would like to escape.

Excellent beer and food! They were pretty busy on a Friday and the nice gentleman at the door said it would be about 45 minutes, so we said no problem and had apps and drinks at the bar while waiting. They brew their own beer there, so we ordered the blueberry, honey wheat, and the blood orange beers. Excellent craft brews. The appetizers are super cheap and you get a ton of food for your money, especially the smoked whitefish platter - you get a huge heap of fresh, delicious smoked whitefish, toast, crackers, dill spread, and apple slices for like 9 bucks. Anywhere else it would $14+ for an appetizer like that. Bruschetta was great also. I got the Lake Superior whitefish picata as my entre and it came with a large bowl of whitefish chowder, bread, a side of fresh green beans, and a baked potato. My partner ordered the Alaskan salmon and it was every bit as good as the whitefish. Food was AWESOME. Brews were DELICIOUS. Staff was FRIENDLY, FAST, and EFFICIENT. If you are in the Marquette area, come here. You would be hard pressed to find a better restaurant in the area (and in the lower peninsula for that matter).

Very week unless you want a burger and a beer. Mostly factory made food off the truck. Cold chicken on the salad. Weak wine by the glass. Gyro was premanufatured too.

Go for beer only! Don't go for food unless you want a flavorless Sysco mess that's overcooked and overseasoned. Their beer is fantastic. Service good. Food is horrible!

The friendly staff and views from the back dinning room are the only reason this place gets 2 stars. The food: -The chicken wrapped prosciutto tasted like fish. -The kid's meal really wasn't. The portions were huge and so was the price. - The sausage in the cheesy potato soup tasted like it was defrosted Oscar Meyer bought from the grocery store. The beer: I almost always get a flight whenever I go to a brewpub, so I figured I would try theirs. It comes out on a nice-looking resemblance of a painter's pallet, but is expensive. None of the beers were really outstanding, but the honey wheat and red ale were good. IPAs are my favorite, but theirs seemed to lack real flavor and kick. Overall, the place isn't terrible, but I was expecting more given how much they charge. With Ore Dock brewery down the street, this place has some stiff competition. I may come back for a beer or two, but plan on trying other restaurants in town.

I used to enjoy going to the Veirling, but over the past year the quality of the food, beer, and service and significantly declined. Last night myself and a few friends decided to give it a try again and were thoroughly disappointed. We ordered appetizers and then after waiting for at least a half hour had to ask the waitress if we could place our dinner order. When I was ordering my Blackened Tuna Salad, I asked that the Tuna be cook medium rare and the waitress responded, "we can't do that because or Tuna is not very high quality." This worried me some, but I decided to stick with my choice even though they were out of a simple vinaigrette dressing that could be made in two minutes. When I received the salad it was missing items that were listed on the menu. I would have told the waitress about the mistake, but she did not come back until we were done eating. At that time I informed her about the missing items where she insisted that I was wrong until I asked to the see the menu again to show her. I was right, but she proceeded to charge me full price for an incomplete meal. The tuna was also cooked so well done you could have made tuna and mayo salad with it. My friends had similar experiences with their food as well. I will avoid going here until they figure out how to get back to the place it used to be.

Listen, I'm not from the Midwest and I don't mean to offend people that are. I'm a stuck-up East Coast snob - especially when it comes to food. Now that I've said that, by Midwest standards I would say that this place is a four star, but it gets reduced by a star just due to the culinary standard 'exchange rate' difference. I got the whitefish special. Whitefish is clearly quite the thing anyplace near the big lake. But for a coastal person such as myself, whitefish is a perfectly good fish for fish n' chips but not much else. It doesn't have much fish flavor on its own. So to give it flavor is is usually piled on, dredged through something, or smothered in sauce. I kind of went for all three at once. The whitefish special was topped with a 'paste' of crab and shrip 'something' (I know), then breaded, then fried, then served with a non descript sauce. Came with rice and a side of beans. The entire plate was really just a filling substance, not good, and not bad. But I think that is kind of a good synopsis of Midwestern food in general. Started with the French Onion Soup. I have to agree with the other reviewers - they really do a good one. Nothing like knowing how to melt lots of cheese into a broth....

Saturday night in hoppin' Marquette, MI. Not a whole lot of choices for dinner and drinks. We tried L'Attitude first, but they like....weren't serving food. At 730 pm on a Saturday. Since it was the "off season," they just had a little snack menu. Our hunger demanded more than a mere snack. Fortunately, around the corner, we were saved by the Vierling. We got a table right away (normally a feat at a restaurant on Saturday night....but this is Marquette), and the place was pretty busy. Our table was right by the door which was a bit chilly, but some blueberry beer helped us feel much better. There were actual blueberries! In the beer! And the beer had great fruit flavor, unlike anything I'd had before. We aren't talking about BerryWeiss here, this is the real deal. Big fan. We started with whitefish bites (when in Rome), which may have been fresh, but I found them to be really bland. Am I missing something? Is that how whitefish is? Was it the "off" season? I didn't think the fish itself was that flavorful, and the light breading was barely seasoned. The housemade (I think) tartar-ish sauce would have solved the problem if I liked it, but I didn't. So the fish stayed plain. Not bad, just....bland. Moving on, my friend and I split the seafood special, which was whitefish (I ordered it before I knew it was bland!) covered with a crab-cake crust. I had a salad first, with their something-tarragon dressing, which wasn't bad, and snuck a taste of my boyfriend's French onion soup. Which was about 75% cheese. Which is fun and all....for a few bites. Broth tasted like it came from a box. Our entree was okay - less bland due to the crab cake situation, and still tasted fresh and light. Didn't really bowl me over though. Came with some tasty red potatoes and simple steamed green beans. I also tasted one of my friend's ribs - he got a half rack and the portion was HUGE but I wasn't a huge fan of the barbecue sauce. Too sweet, maybe. Didn't taste like real barbecue (but once again....this is Michigan we're in.) Anyway, none of the food was bad, there were a few bright spots, but overall it was just a place to get a filling, not-too-expensive meal. I'd probably skip it if I was back in town....although I WOULD sit at the bar and have a few pints of blueberry beer! That was the good stuff.

My husband likes the beer so I can recommend people going here for that. The food was blah, no flavor unless you like the same herb (maybe Orgeno??????) They use in EVERYTHING. My advice drink beer then go somewhere else to eat

Good food and excellent service. The whitefish crabcake tapping was delicious. The meal was complete with Redskin potatoes green beans and a fresh salad with orange dill dressing.

Though i live in Chicago, i've been spending summer vacation in the UP for many many years, and we always go to Vierlings. I had my first legal beer in a restaurant here--the blueberry wheat. It was good! My favorite is the salmon burger and the whitefish chowder, but everything is always really good. The last thing i had here was the "stuffed" whitefish, and i uploaded a picture. Everyone i was with got that actually, and we all really liked it. The restaurant itself has interesting decorations and the service is always great--but everyone in the UP is so friendly i can't say anywhere has poor service!!

The highlight of this place is their blueberry wheat, which was like liquid Cracker Barrel blueberry pancakes. Just a tremendous amount of blueberry flavor- more than I'd experienced in any of this style anywhere else. The food though was meh. The ranch dressing on my salad was great, but that's negated by the giant nasty unripened, flavorless and soulless tomato that was staring at me. I have no idea why a chef would think its a good idea to stick this on their salad as it contributes nothing. I ordered the whitefish; while it was cooked quite nicely (flaky and, juicy inside, crispy top), it, the beans, and the new potatoes lacked seasoning.

The food is very good, American fare with some interesting seafood concoctions. The beer surprised me; there was a much wider variety than I expected. Each style was unique and and delicious in its own way

Vierling at one point in time was THE place to bring dates during HS dances. Although we weren't able to try their delicious home brews, the Vierling still had some of the best food around. They are consistent, service is good, and the decor is fun to look at. There is also a nice view off the patio or the back tables where you can overlook Lake Superior and Mattson Park. Burgers are what I get there but don't let this sway your vote, get over there and try something out of the ordinary, you never know, you might be back the next morning for breakfast. Another great Marquette restaurant that has been around for a long time.

If whitefish and craft beer don't get you excited then this is not the restaurant for you. The French onion soup is the best in town, and so is the whitefish sandwich. I've been going to the Verling for 10 years and have never been disappointed. This is not only a Marquette establishment for all visitors but also where many famous people go to eat when they visit this wonderful town.

Great beers and good food at this comfortable spot right near Lake Superior. The menu is more adventurous than your typical U.P. fare. I highly recommend their whitefish chowder.

4* for the beer, location and feel of the establishment. 2* for the female bartender the evening I was in recently (Thursday). Cold, unfriendly and actually was sporting a slightly mean look. To the owner, I might recommend that staff at least pretend that the customer is in the bar? Just a thought. Again, really enjoyed the brew and location. I'd return again when I hit Marquette.

I think there's a certain number of staples that you have to make any out-of-towner experience when entering marquette... the blueberry beer is certainly one of them. The Vierling is one of my favorite lunch stops, the french onion soup is really the best in town and they have some great sandwiches. I love that the bar itself looks like it's got a piece of history behind it, and isn't a formica countertop like the rest of america. Also, probably one of the better views in town for your dining experience, and when you're done, you can walk along lower harbor and burn off some of those calories.
