This place redefines Shabby Chic with the emphasis on Shabby. From the garish yellow paint on the outside to the disjointed interior, it is kitsch at its worst. It just looks haphazard, unplanned and like they shopped the curb sides on clean-up day. And it does not look, smell or feel clean. The menu is good for lunch, but seriously overpriced and the service was fair at best. We decided to give it another chance - boy was this a mistake! We went for an evening meal and my first choice, not available, second choice, not available, third choice, I felt forced to order was as bad as it gets. The menu is over reaching and all too well demonstrates what happens when you try to reach too high beyond your abilities. Better to do a few simple things well than an overly elaborate gourmet menu that falls flat and even more egregious, run out of entrees at 6:30 in the evening. To make matter's worse the chef was the mayor of excuse village on why they were out of food and when my plate went back with only one bite taken, nothing was done to make things right. So I paid for an overpriced meal that I did not eat which was poorly prepared and not at all anything I wanted in the first place. We left and stopped down the street at Wendy's, which was at least clean, dependable and fairly priced. That is why I am telling every one and using this forum to warn others to stay away from the Blu Moon!

Avoid the rooftop unless you are a fan of fried food and cheap drinks. For a real treat, eat downstairs in the restaurant. Although it is indeed eclectic, the seafood is amazing. We ordered the Chef's selection as an appetizer and wished it had been our meal. Great food, great prices. We only regret that we were too full for dessert so we are going back tonight!

Very pleased, although I do agree with Phillip that the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired (though I would never go so far as to insinuate that it is dirty). It just lacks cohesiveness. Half of it is classy in an undistinguished way, a third of it looks like it's going for 50s pop, and the remainder looks like an overdecorated hair salon. That being said, the food is awesome, the staff was great, and we left gorged and satisfied. There is a restaurant in the city we live in that I won't name, but it has the ambiance that this joint lacks, but its food is always disappointing. we haven't been back to it in years. Blu Moon is a place that I would go to pretty regularly if I lived in the area.

Atmosphere is pretty cool. Food left a little to be desired but they were preparing for the winter and cutting back the menu. If you like spicy bloody Marys this is a good spot for 'em.

Stumbled on this fantastic spot while walking down the street and looking at the menu. A man outside told us their lobster risotto was "to die for.". So we went in. Funky decor, good live music, and amazing food! Best French fries (pomme frites) we've ever had. Also tried the New Zealand mussels (delicious), Michigan Maytag salad (fantastic), and the fish tacos (truly delicious). Loved this place!

My husband and I are vegetarians and we went on sushi night, had the vegetarian sushi and it was just delicious. There aren't a lot of places for us to eat in Ludington but this is the one restaurant we will be back to. Our waitress was so nice too. Also, the wine was great and inexpensive.

Let me start by saying we eat out a lot, AND, all over the state. Aim by no means a food snob, and despite being from Ann Arbor, give every hole in the wall and corporate chain a chance. I was excited by the Blue Moon menu when I saw it, but grossly underwhelmed by the food when I ate it. I had a typical Michigan style salad, which was typical and fine overall. My partner had the Asian soup, which I though was fairly delish. Cocktails were good. I had the white sangria, he had a Martini of some kind. Now...we get to the not so great entres. I had the Kobe surf and turf. Let me tell you right now, as a foodie and steak fanatic, this was not Kobe beef. It was some of the grossest, and cheapest tasting beef I've ever eaten. The shrimp was fair, the sides (blue cheese potatoes and spaghetti squash) were pretty good, but overall...not so great. My partner's mediterranean chicken pasta had very few actual pasta pieces and was not very good. Overall, service was pretty good. Food was fair to average. The place is overpriced and thinks it is better than it is. My advice is save your money and skip it.

The place in Ludington for good food. With their menu expanding, and beer and wine, this is the one stop cafe in town for both coffee and food. The mood is very relaxed and the staff is very friendly.

We stopped in for a cup of hot cocoa and had all kinds of choices for adding flavors. Went with our waitresses advice on toasted marshmellow. It was good. Interesting little place, very friendly. Will definately go back and try something off the menu next time. Food being delivered to the tables around us looked good.

I've heard a lot of whining about this place...mostly about the ambiance...and I didn't find any truth in any of the comments. We decided to check it out for lunch, and I loved it. Their menu is rather large but we settled on the ultimate grilled cheese and the blacked tuna salad. Both were delicious (especially the tuna). They also have a fantastic drink menu, and I had two very interesting but delicious mixed drinks (one was the artillery punch...yum). I will admit that we did not hit this restaurant at their peak hours but the service was still wonderful. Two sisters were running the food and were absolutely adorable. As for as the ambiance, the restaurant has a unique blend of furniture and wall decorations, and I found it to be quite comfy and cute. This is a unique gem especially considering that it's in a town that is sitting in the middle of nowhere. I would strongly recommend it.

I want to like this place, I want to like the food, I want to like the service. Lowered expectations never prepare me for the highs and lows of the food offered, the food prepared or the service available. The kitchen can make wonderous things. The service can be attentive The service has been so distracted that I went outside and out back to find them and learn to smoke cigarettes. I have sat at the bar to get the servers to bring food or drinks or the rest of the food ordered. My latest experiment is to order drinks and try to assess the "mood" in the restaurant before committing to anything else. Some weeks it is easier to go elsewhere than to take our chances at the Blu Moon

Waited 30 min to be seated on the roof top and about another 15 before a server even said hello. Food was served timely, but burger was way over cooked and pricey for what you get. Not much selection in L-ton, but they need to up their game about 3 levels.

This place seems to symbolize the Ludington food scene. The decor is well done and provides a very attractive ambience. The menu is imaginative and well thought out. Our waiter introduced himself and efficiently took drink orders and explained the menu. Then everything changed. A few of our party got a drink other than what they ordered and it took so long to rectify, they gave up and drank whatever they were given. It took some effort to relocate our server so that we might order our meal. We intended to order appetizers first, but changed our minds when we realized how slow service was. Our meals were, well, OK. Not horrible, but didn't live up to the promise implied by the decor and menu. One person didn't get what they ordered and never did see the correct meal. It took effort to get more drinks, or water. And, finally, it took enormous effort to get our bill so we could pay and escape, err, leave. I MIGHT cut them some slack if were were there in the height of tourist season, but we were there the first week of November. I'd be pretty happy to never go back. This place is supposed to be one of the highlights of Ludington dining. I'd still rather get a pizza at the Sportsmans.

We have dined at Blu Moon a couple times each year since they opened. In an area where quality food is scarce, Blu Moon is an standout.

Took my daughter to dinner at the Moon because she wanted to eat on the roof. Last year the food was serviceable but pricey. This year my four year old ordered a burger off the kids menu. I wasn't real hungry so I ordered the nacho platter withe pork and steak. Service was okay but food was very slow in coming. We put in our order and about 10 minutes later I could look down into the rooftop kitchen and see the food being made. I saw my nachos get doused in a huge amount of cheese and then get put in the microwave. I told my daughter the food should be coming soon. I watched them put on all the toppings for the nachos and then I watched the chef throw what looked like a frozen burger patty on the grill. 12 minutes later we got our food. My cheese had congealed and the sour cream had melted making the chips soggy. The meat was not very good even of the dish had been warm. My daughter's burger was a half pound burger (kids menu). I cut it into four sections for her. She took a bite and immediately had tears in her eyes. I asked her if it was too hot--she said it was too spicy. I didn't believe her--we had asked for only pickles and ketchup on the burger. I bit into the burger and the first thing I noticed was somebody had dropped about a tablespoon of pepper on the burger prior to cooking. It was spicy but it was hard to discern whether this was worse than the charred remains of what was once meat. It would have made my dog sick if I had brought it home. I had good meals at the moon a few years ago but the last two years I have been disappointed and this last meal assured me I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Love the atmosphere and most of the servers, but the food price and portions are just getting worse and worse. Each time we come there the portion is smaller than the last time, yet the price is the same. The price is a bit high so we come expecting enough food to fill us up, but that expectation is no longer fulfilled. This place used to be our new place to go in town but now we don't have one, a real disappointment.

  • Tyler R.

I don't get the bad reviews - prices were quite reasonable and the food (I had the rainbow trout special) was quite good. I travel a lot for work, and this was the best place I found in ludington for sure, and I would have been easily satisfied in any other city. Beer priced at 4.25 for local stuff is not overpriced, where do you guys get this

    (4)
  • Christopher B.

I took my beloved here on a date and both of us were very pleased. The menu offers a wide selection of choices, made from local ingredients whenever possible. We enjoyed everything we ate. There is also a reasonable beer and excelloent wine selection.

Very nice server. We ordered a variety of food but all undistinquised. Black and Tan onion rings were weird tasting....bitter...beers were cold....cans served with glasses which is a good thing.

What a pleasant surpriise to find an upscale, but not over the top, restaurant in Ludington. The food was great, the service exceptional and the atmosphere eclectic and fun. The menu was quite diverse, offering everything from sushi to steak and salmon.

I saw a lot of positive reviews on this place and I had high hopes. The food was okay but I think their food is overpriced for the taste. I ordered a special and I wish I had asked the waitor the price for it but it ended up being a $40 ny steak..oops. I have no issue paying for good food but not for junk. The steak was not done well and was covered in fat. If you are okay with paying for overpriced, mediocre food..I guess this place is okay.

Decor-wise, the place is slightly unpolished in places, quirky, classy, casual, hipster, etc. all thrown into two differing rooms, one of which is a bit-classier in decor while the other has a bar in the front and tables in the back. The hallway to the restroom has a number of retro-clip art faces proclaiming their love for all-things coffee. I did see a commercial-grade espresso machine here (for coffee fans) like those seen in many bookstores/cafes. The menu for dinner was not the most vegetarian-friendly, but non-vegans will not starve; the Maytag side-salad was tasty (wish it had just a smidgen more Maytag, though, on the mixed greens) and the Pierogies I ordered as my entree (sans the bacon) were cooked well and decently-portioned. I'm told they have a sushi menu, but I did not see one; other reviews also mentioned tapas, but I also did not see these (I would have welcomed it). The carrot cake I had for dessert was very tasty and well-presented (as were the other served plates throughout the dinner service). Eat here again? Why, yes I would...

Had a great meal. My husband had the BBQ chicken and I had a burger. My only complaint is that they were out of mustard. We sat on the roof top, had good service and listened to a very talented musician named Sherman. It was a cooler night but the propane heater were going which kept it comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place!

Good, friendly service. The bang, bang shrimp was out of this world! I really wanted to try the lobster nachos but that's only served on the deck and it was raining.

Over the Moon is located on the roof top of blue moon. Excellent food service and atmosphere. Great outdoor space with yummy food. We had a delicious grilled turkey sandwich and my husband had a smoked fish dip. Yum! Recommended.

This place was great when it opened a few years ago, but now it has gone downhill. I ordered some sushi thinking it would be enough to eat, it was $12 afterall, and it wasn't. It was terribly overpriced. I was shocked. Usually sushi is about $6-$8 a roll and this was $12. Ouch! I've been reading some of the other reviews and see that other people have mentioned this as well, that it is overpriced. I agree, there are much better places to eat in Ludington. I think I'll move on. Sorry, Blu Moon, you've lost my business.

I will give this place a 4 star for the patio it was such a good atmosphere. The food was really average, but still ok! I had a veggie sandwich and lots of fries and the cucumber salad was really refreshing. Go check out the patio and get some good bar food and have a good time in the sun!

If you are a sushi lover, don't go here, you will just be disappointed. The sushi rolls are the tiniest I've ever seen along with the most over priced. Their overall taste didn't wow me. Atmosphere is ok, but the music sucked and was too loud to hear what the server was saying.

Went there recently !!! Tied the 12.00 hamburger !!! Nothing special and not worth even half that price !!! I wondered why I did not see any locals there !!! Can't afford the inflated tourist prices !!! Hey this is Ludington not Chicago !!! Will not be back !!!

Really enjoyed the Blu Moon today- rotisserie chicken was perfect and the Carolina bbq sauce was great. Nice presentation. Todd was very attentive at the bar and was good with the customers. Great spot to go- lots of variety of food and drinks and sushi! Highly recommended.

Went here with my family last night to have a nice dinner. Disorganized and dirty. We waited over and hour for our food and when it finally came out, the food was cold. Barely could order water, and when we did finally get water after waiting 20 minutes, it was tonic water. Will never be going there again.

One of the best in Ludington!! For a more fine dining, experience, sit inside the restaurant. Very nice atmosphere, great cocktails, wonderful service, and the food is amazing!! Great place for a date or an evening out with friends! It isn't the most "child-friendly" place in town and honestly I prefer it that way. The sushi is great - and on Tuesdays (at least in the summer) they feature a sushi special. Over the Moon, their outdoor deck area is a lot of fun! There is frequently live music and it is a more casual experience. Children fit in better up on the deck than in the restaurant itself. My personal favorite at Over the Moon is the lobster nachos! I love to have it with a refreshing Goose Island 312 draft!

Our first visit to Ludington. Per recommendation of our innkeper, went to the Blue Moon for dinner. Loved the ambiance and the interesting, delicious food. We ordered the Pork Porterhouse cut, and the Farm Salad...both amazingly good!

I don't know what the issue is with reviewers on here, must be out of towners expecting something different. This place is easily the best restaurant in Ludington. The food is interesting and so is the atmosphere. The service can be a little slow at times but you will not find anything else in Ludington even close to the quality and creativity of their restaurant

Haven't dined at this restaurant since they opened because I was disappointed but decided to give them another chance. Ordered NY strip with shoe string fries and a water with a splash of cranberry - 35$ meal My steak was cooked well at medium rare but for a 29 dollar piece of meat I had hoped it would have had some flavor. I really wanted to like this place but again was disappointed in the high prices with low quality taste of the food.

After looking for a good 30 minutes my family and I ran into this location. I'm glad we did. The food was delicious, very well presented, and very accommodating to food allergies. The weather was also beautiful and the outside chairs were just right. Highly recommended.

This is the best restaurant in Ludington. In a town packed with boring diners full of bad food this is a nice change. Recommend the sushi for two. Cool presentation. Sashimi was good quality. The sushi itself was mediocre but tasted fantastic since it had been awhile. Came with two seaweed salads which were very good.

  • Lee T.

I always feel that the delivery does not match the pretensions. Sushi was very good, fish and chips OK. Service was good but that may have been that we have known the server for about 30 years and hadn't seen him in a while so there was some catching up and maybe a bit more attention than normal. I want to really like this place, but it seems like it always comes up a bit short.

We were there twice in two days - on the roof. First time two couples for drinks later at night. Service was excellent, drinks good and reasonably priced. Next evening, 8 adults, and 4 kids from 6 months to 4 years. Service was awesome and they were packed. Food was great. Can speak about the whitefish, lobster nachos and ribs. All good. Nobody else had any complaints. Waitress Michelle was stellar. Really on her game. Would definitely go back.

I may be a little jaded because we used to come here when it first opened and the menu was very different. I much preferred the old menu. The food is not bad it just is not inspired. The veggie sushi is actually pretty good. The charcoal salmon was a bit under cooked and leaned toward the fatty side. The crab rangoons were rather heavy on dough and light on filling. The side salad was fresh and pleasant. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service was friendly and just the right amount of attentive.

Their martini and cocktails have unique ingredients like a strawberry basil vodka! Yum! Sushi was absolutely amazing. We live a few hours away but would travel back to Ludington specifically to have dinner here! Trust me-go here

Between all the choices of salads and soups and seafood, it was sooo easy to eat healthfully here. Even for my Mom, who has a serious gluten allergy, dairy allergy and also happens to be a vegetarian. We found something tasty for everyone. Not to mention the fries! Wow. Not so much healthy, but delicious. I had the Wakame salad appetizer with 2 types of seaweed salad and Japanese style seafood ceviche. While the clavicle was clearly not fresh and nit my favorite, the seaweed salads were really tasty and so was everything else.

This place could be wonderful. It's trying too hard to be trendy and not concentrating on the food. My first visit here for dinner my food - ribs were cold and tough and inedible. I tried some of the shrimp and grits and that was good. They took it off my bill. The second time I was there for lunch and had the salmon salad. It was over microwaved and the flavors didn't mesh well. The food is less than meh and the ambience is not inviting either. Blue lights and mismatched chairs.

We came back to try this place after a few years. AMAZING!!! Can't believe we let this gem fly under our radar. We started with a sushi appetizer which was wonderful ( and a large portion!!). Then our main course..... I had the shrimp and scallops, my husband had a seafood ravioli chef special. Both were to hang for!! We finished with a creme brûlée that was delicious. Then we discovered that they also do dinner theatre??!!?? This has been moved to the top of our dining out rotation. Well done!!

Excellent cocktails and dessert with very good service. We came here after an entirely unmemorable dinner at Scotty's and were delighted. Bread pudding and carrot cake were both excellent: fresh, light, interesting flavors and great presentations (with yellow and orange carrot pieces). Appreciated the regular portion size of high-quality food rather than super-sized mediocrity. The craft cocktails were interesting, original and well done. The service was very good, no issues. We had read the mixed yelp reviews and been a bit worried by the on-line menu that the kitchen offers too many different styles of cooking. It turns out there are two separate kitchens, one for sushi and one for the rest. Had great drinks and desserts with good service and should have come here for dinner.

We arrived at noon and at 1:05 still didn't have our food. The waitress kept saying it was the next order up. Meanwhile 5 or 6 orders came and went. We watched as flies landed on the outdoor food. A plate of nachos sat for abot 15 minutes. The manager right in front of us asked loudly for one of the employees to scrub the men's toilet. When our order finally came half our order was missing. They brought a sad turkey sandwich out. We decided we had enough and walked out. Would never go to this place again and will tell many of this experience and the wasted hour of our life that we won't get back.

Best food with the worst service. Went for lunch during the Ludington Art Fair with a group of 10. We were seated quickly on the roof. Our server was pleasant and kept offering us water, but our food did not come until an hour had passed. Customers who walked in after us received their meals before we did. The problem was, we could see our food up at the bar, under the heat lamps, but for some reason, our waitress chose not to deliver it to us. There were only two waitresses for the entire area and we got the slow one. The other waitress was really hustling and made constant deliveries to her tables. Our appetizer that was ordered with the drinks also took an hour to deliver. While the food was delicious when received, we did not deserve to be ignored. I will not go back there.

Great rooftop Accommodating, not amazing, service. What's up the weak wi/fi???? The hummus appetizer was quite tasty, but it left me suspecting if milk was mixed into it. As a vegan, I really enjoyed the miso salad. Organic greens plus a very light dressing was a great mid day meal. My father enjoyed the bun on his brat more than the meat itself. Nicely done French fries

My favorite place in Ludington to grab a decent cocktail. The food is always great- the salads and burgers are my favorite in town. A little pricey, but the place is good if you want to feel classy or casual. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They're willing to answer any questions you have about the food or drinks. I love that they use local ingredients. I love that they are passionate about their food. The rooftop is awesome. Live music is great. Just a real winning place to be in Ludington. If you're looking for a cheap, casual meal, this is not the place to go. Rather, this is the perfect place to take your significant other out on a date. I can't wait to go back again.

Nice little bistro for that change of pace you are looking for in the Ludington area. This is my second visit there and the staff are just delightful . Nice selections of wines and I love that fact that you can choose a chief recommended wine to go to the dishes. Looking over the menu the desserts look dreamy like Bananas Foster. I always get full so I have not tried it as of yet. The dishes are happy ! I recommend to try the Scallops that are larger than life itself ! and they have a really nice Moscato if you like sweet or .... Chardonnay that is recommended with the Scallops Dish. Its not a place I will dine every night , but its on my list for once a month visits. I did want to check out the Sushi Tuesdays ? It seems great but I didn't see the prices -- and they do not do take out on sushi night.... so thats another bummer on a day I don't feel like sitting in the restaurant...Lots of selections though - Appetizer , Wine , Dinner for one person ranges 40-60.00.... BUT ... you will NOT find any food like this in a 20 mile radius... I checked :) I would not take young children there.... its more for a nice quiet dining experience with nice dim lighting ( relaxed atmosphere)

Classy, unique and hip. This place was unlike anywhere else we went in Ludington and had a very eclectic feel. The prices were a bit higher than other places, a great place to get your night started. I didn't see their food menu, but I assume it matched.

Wanted to really like this place. On a Monday they were out of half the menu. The fried clams I ordered were tough and nearly burned. My husband's salad was good and my soon like the noodles on the kids menu. I think it is a good concept not executed well.

I have been disappointed in restaurants before...but nothing like this. The menu is nothing but a piece of wrinkled paper that had food on it, the prices are WAY too high for the mediocre food you get. Our server comes up to our table and says 'Hey, what can I get ya' which is ok with me if we were seated at a bar but not at a table at this joke of a 'bistro' then followed with asking us if we overheard him say the specials to a table across the room so he wouldn't have to repeat them, I asked what they had for Gluten Free or Vegetarian dishes and he starts listing Steak, Prime Rib....to my Husband like I didn't even matter, my Husband ordered hot tea for the both of us because there wasn't a drinks menu and when the server came back it was a cup, a tea bag and about an ounce of hot water. I'm not exaggerating. And it was a common brand, Bigelow Earl Grey that recommends steeping in 6-8 ounces of hot water :) My Husband ordered the ribs that were DRY, hardly any sauce, hardly any meat, looked like something out of a tv dinner. The crowd was pretty old and pretentious, over heard a couple seated next to us bragging about how expensive their tastes were...I laughed because this place?!?! is the LAST place I would ever expect any person with fine dining experience to ever return to, let alone rave about the place. Disgusting, disappointed, overpriced....and our server smelled like he just smoked a cigarette...yummy.

The atmosphere of the rooftop deck is great. Reminds me a lot of the bars in Hawaii and Mexico. However, the food is NOT good. I think the restaurant is trying to do way too much. There is an abundance of great ingridients in Michigan, I don't understand why they want to source ingridients from Hawaii and New Zealand. I think they would be much better off becoming part of the locavore movement.

Very disappointed. We read some good reviews on this place and decided to have dinner there. Dinner stared out well with my soup and my girlfriends salad. Shoe ordered the Kobe surf and turf which has prawns. The Kobe was definitely not Kobe beef! It was at best a grocery store steak. The prawns we're ok and the mashed potatoes were actually very good. I had the mediterranean chicken which had handmade pasta. The chicken was good but there was barely any pasta in the dish at all! Not usually the case. The bread that came with it could be used to play hockey with so save your teeth and do not try to eat it. Also my girlfriends water glass seemed like it had been used for Sprite and not washed afterwards. We were very disappointed and especially at those prices. Service was ok though as were the cocktails

I spent the past weekend in the relatively quiet town of Ludington Michigan. I'm sure during the summer months the place is packed with boating enthusiasts, beach going families and many a newlywed couple doing the bed & breakfast thing. But we were up there for a wedding during the "off season". It was day #3 in Ludington ... the morning after the reception. The hotel "breakfast bar" coffee was slightly better than hot brown water and there wasn't enough sugar or cream or whatever to make it drinkable. I dreaded returning to the family restaurant we tried the previous morning. The waitress should have asked, "Would ya like some food with your salt?" ... Yikes! Oh yeah ... hot brown water again. Anyhow ... I remembered passing a place called Blu Moon Coffee House & Cafe during one of our trips to the liquor store. We crossed our fingers and wobbled our hungover butts to the cafe. "Please please please have good coffee" I kept saying in my head. I wasn't even concerned with food at the moment ... I just needed a decent cup of coffee. When I saw the espresso/cappuccino machine as we walked in I got excited! YES!!! Coffee with balls! So we sat down & I promptly ordered a "Shot in the Dark" which is a shot of espresso dumped into a large coffee. I was humming Mancini while my friend was singing Ozzy - I'm sure the server thought we were just a bit odd. So I started checkin' out the menu. It's not very large but they've got a lil' somethin' for everyone. As I was scanning the "Sides" column I spotted our waitress coming towards us with my coffee & I started cheering (well ... on the inside, where it counts). I took a sip, and I started feeling the clouds of last night's boozin' start to clear. Mmmm-MMM! It was full bodied, not too bitter, had a great flavor - definitely the best cup of coffee I had anywhere around Ludington. Ok, on to the food ... I ordered the potato pancakes & a fried egg on the side & my wife got corned beef hash & eggs. Between our friends, there was also a frittata, belgian waffles, a skillet & another order of potato pancakes. I can't speak for everyone else, but the potato pancakes were incredibly good. The corned beef wasn't homemade but was quite tasty. As I ate I moved onto the blu moon house dark roast and it was darn tasty too. 3 days in Ludington makes me far from an expert on the town ... but to my knowledge, the Blu Moon Cafe serves the best damn cup of coffee in town. And the food rocks too!
