My favorite for Chinese food. I'm not claiming that I am an expert, but for the typical Americanized Chinese, this has been consistently tasty. I have had Chinese food at many other restaurants over the years, but this is still my favorite. I have been a patron for at least 30 years, average once a month, and the food does not seem to have changed at all, though the owners changed a few years ago. Ten Yen is the best restaurant bargain of which I am aware. The lunch special M-Sat, will fill you up and leave you with a doggie bag, for about 6 bucks. The regular combination plates are not much more and give you even more food. My favorite egg rolls of anywhere I have been. The decor has not changed much over the years, but it is clean, and I am there for the food, not the furniture. Service is always good and the owners are always there. Others are correct that they sell pop by the can, so no free refills. Same system they have always used. I never liked the taste of pop with Chinese food anyway, and always get the pot of hot tea which is included in the combination. I don't recommend the coffee either. It seems like they do not sell very much of it, and it tastes a little stale (last time tried it, which was several years ago).

Now this place has the goods ladies and gents. Been coming here for years and I wouldn't go anywhere else for Chinese food. We live no where near this place and my wife and I still drive a 45 minutes to eat here. Highly recommend the General's Chicken and Sweat & Sour Chicken. Egg rolls are really good as well.

I've had to drive by this place at least a 1000 times and gave it no thought. The exterior and shopping strip looks a bit shabby and run down. After reading some reviews and in the area we decided to give it a try. We were pleasantly pleased. We both had lunch specials, very reasonable. Soup and eggroll included. The hot and sour was wonderful super good! and the egg drop looked fantastic as well. Egg rolls fantastic very moist inside and crisp outside. I had the gai kow which was very good nice sauce and a healthy portion. My date the szechuan beef loved it. The interior is a bit worn but the place seemed clean. Our server seemed to be running the whole show to go orders running back and forth from kitchen the whole deal. We were the only table and he was busy but handled it all with grace. Good service, good food would definitely return.

OK, I decided to try them again last night. Like I said before, the place looks run down, both on the outside and the inside. The bathrooms are in the very back and completely unheated. They were fairly clean though. I sat down at a table to order. There was only one other table which was occupied during the time I was there, but they seemed to be doing a brisk carry out business. This time I ordered the Almond Chicken. It was your standard Americanized Chinese fare. It came with soup, an egg roll and fried rice. The portion sizes were generous for the price. The food was OK for the money and the egg rolls were better than what a lot of other places serve. I ended up taking about half of it home and will try to reheat it in the toaster oven (a microwave would just make it soggy). There are better Chinese places than this, but it's close to home and not bad overall. It's worth a visit, but nothing which will blow you away.

If you want a colon cleanse this is the place for you! We used to live by this place and for 20 years we went here. Food was good! Recently things have changed, the last two times we went the food was awful and we threw away the carry out. Unfortunately, we have removed the number from our cell phones never to go back again. So sad that things have changed!

My husband picked up dinner and brought it home. He and his co-workers get take-out from here pretty often. We had the General Tso's Chicken, egg rolls, and crab rangoons. The chicken was very flavorful but could have used more sauce, next time we will order extra. The egg rolls were mediocre, but the crab rangoons were delicious. Overall, my husband wasn't wrong, dinner was pretty good.

Had a couple bad experiences with my food here, on a sanitary level. Did like the food until I was kinda grossed out.

In the past few months I've been going here every week and recently I found poop in my shrimp and a hair deep fried into my chicken. I know that eating out runs this risk but that's a lot of wrongs in a short amount of time. Never again. Scarred.

I stopped by for lunch today after reading some of the reviews and was not disappointed. I got the vegetarian chop suey (I think- I basically asked the server for what was good in vegetarian, but her English was weak so I was not 100% of what she said, just that it was vegetarian) and a vegetable soup. The soup was delicious and the chop suey was good (but nothing special). The food was brought to me quickly (possibly a little too quickly, which made me wonder how much they had prepared beforehand), though it was probably since the place was near empty when I visited.

One of my favorite restaurants that I will drive out of my way to visit. Food is great and tastes the same as it has for the past 30 years. Service is good and polite. You really get a lot for your money's worth. Food is usually served quickly, and carryout is very quick as well. Best egg rolls and almond chicken I've ever had.

Best Chinese ever, awesome management, been here once, came back after two months and the owner remembered me and remembered what I had. Their dinner rolls r also really good, Hugh portions of food. Been coming here for few months now. My favorite is the Mongolian. And the soup is also great.

This is the BEST Chinese food restaurant that I've been to, HANDS DOWN!! The prices are great and the amount of food you get is amazing. The shrimp egg foo yung patties are huge. I get the patties with $2-$3 extra shrimp and they are STUFFED!! The peppered steak is made with very lean beef and it's to-die-for! I recommend anyone looking for a great deal on a great meal check this place out!

Went back today with coworkers for lunch. I got the egg drop soup (excellent!), egg roll (super!), and shrimp with lobster sauce. The shrimp with lobster sauce has a lighter sauce than most places, and the shrimp are butterflied to guarantee the perfect consistency. It remains my favorite Chinese Restaurant!

Another blast from the past. My better half has really got a taste for Crab Rangoons lately and I recently read a review about them being pretty good at Ten Yen. We were out and it was just past our normal lunch time so we stopped in to try a late lunch. We opted for an Almond Chicken combo with fried rice and an eggroll, along with some hot tea. We also ordered the Crab Rangoons as an appetizer to complete a "light" late lunch. The almond Chicken was tender and moist with a light batter and a delicious golden gravy. The Egg Roll was crispy, the Plumb sauce sweet and the hot mustard a breath taking treat. The combo came with a soup and the Won Ton we ordered was hot, but a little to salty for my taste. The Rangoons were very good and were a real treat with the plumb sauce.

OMG ABC! If you've read any of my other Chinese Restaurant reviews then you can appreciate my taste or lack there of for Chinese food. As I have mentioned before I have a limited menu selection. I keep it to the ABC, or more affectionately known, Almond Boneless Chicken. This is close to our Livonia plant so I went on my lunch excursion with fellow workers. After they suggested this place I was in for my monthly Chinese meal. After reading other reviews I was totally cracking up at what Peggy F. mentioned. They have the best yellow sauce. I couldn't agree more. The ABC was very good. Breaded lightly and my favorite deep fried.I ordered my yellow sauce on the side so the chicken didn't get too soggy. I still say what's the deal with that healthy lettuce underneath my crispy chicken. I liked the pork egg rolls. I think I now have a favorite Chinese restaurant for lunch. They were very fast with the rolls and then the meal. Great for a quick lunch. Peggy F., I think we can get a UYE going and meet up here. Even if it's only the two of us showing up for the yellow sauce. LOL. The men's bathroom, clean enough. No sparkles but clean. The decor was what I would call the same as strip mall Chinese restaurants, nothing fancy or elegant but just the usual. Prices for lunch are very reasonable.

THE BREAD ROLLS. . . my kids are always excited to go because of these rolls. Just try them and you will see what I mean. They are fluffy, soft and huge. I've never had anything that I didn't like from there.

Been going here since the 70's good no frills reasonably priced food with good portion size for both lunch and dinner.

I worked next door to TY for 9 months, so of course we ordered take out at least once a week. The menu is definitely old school, so if that's your thing, you are golden here! I'm not a fan of fried rice, but their combination fried rice is really good. It even has diced ham in it! Love that. My favorite dish is Beef Bok Choy. Nothing but beef, bok choy, garlic and brown sauce. So amazingly delicious! The inside of the building is also very old school. Again, if you like that kind of thing, you're set. Lots of parking available and their prices aren't too high.

Typical Chinese but done really well. We ordered the general chicken and it was enough to share and take home leftovers. The hot and sour soup was very flavorful and the wonton soup was your average wonton soup however less oily than most. The egg rolls, with a little bit of hot mustard and plum sauce, was delicious. Service was really fast and friendly. And the whole meal cost less than fifteen dollars plus tip. Overall, a very good Chinese restaurant.

This place needs a remodel stat. It doesn't look like much outside and really it doesn't improve much inside. It is clean but don't expect to be at all impressed with decor. The food though is solid Americanized Chinese and for that type, very good. If you are looking for authentic or any spicy type Chinese this is not your place but lets be honest, sometimes you just want something like this and you don't care that it is not authentic. My husband is not a huge fan of authentic really at any rate, having never been exposed prior to marrying me. We were looking for fried Chinese-ish food reminiscent of James' childhood type places on this occasion and they brought it in big quantities. Neither one of us were all that impressed with the soups, they were ok and edible but not fabu. The crab rangoon helped ease any troubles. Yummy. My husband had tempura shrimp, very nice with tempura veggies as well. A huge portion and it made us happy. I recommend this option if you are doing fried shrimp as the other offering is too coated but this is light and pleasant. I chose sesame chicken and asked for non coated type chicken which they did for me no problem. It is a very nice version here. It was nice big chunks of chicken in a good non cloying sauce. We over ordered as we could have easily shared one of the meals, but we took a bunch home and feasted later which works. We both hated that they have cans of diet Coke. First off it was Coke and not Pepsi but that also meant limited drinks for my husband rather than endless fountain supplies. I had bottomless tea and water but he felt ripped about having to buy a second can of pop. Service was fast and friendly. It was pretty busy too, obviously this place is popular. If James has a craving for this again I will swing back in.

my review is based on the fact that there is no vegetarian choices. went for lunch and NO vegetarian on the menu. ask for the dinner menu and there were a couple old standards like chop suey - does anyone eat that anymore? waitress didn't seem to care nor suggested they would make what i like. we got up and left. place is shabby like so many chinese places. and it was quite cold even for me who likes cold.

The portions are huge! One takeout dinner combo is good for two people. And they only cost something like ~$9? I like the general chicken, order it just about every time. Has a slight spicy taste to it, but it's fairly mild, just how I like it (I'm a wimp for spicy)

Ten Yen is awesome. For an Americanized Chinese food restaurant it is great. Located in a shabby strip mall its an icon of the Livonia-Westland area. When my family from Texas comes to town they always want Almond Boneless Chicken from Ten Yen. Yum. Everything is standard Chinese-American fare. I suggest the General Tso's Chicken with no breading. It's delicious and comes with egg roll, rice and soup. A great value. It's not gourmet or trendy/classy. It's just very basic but good quality and nostalgic. It's always the same, every time.

We can actually walk here from our house - if we're feeling ambitious. It's happened a few times, but we've also driven here or just stopped on our way home from shopping or visiting. The dine-in service is always pretty good, and the food is tasty. Unfortunately it always looks empty from the outside, but maybe more people are braving the walk than us? They've been in business for as long as I can remember, but when we arrive it always seems they're having a slow time and ready to help us immediately. I guess that's nothing to complain about! The fact that they aren't usually very busy also makes it very calming inside. The serenity makes everything seem a little nicer.

Pretty tasteless Americanized food. The portions were big for the money, but the soup, chicken, and egg rolls didn't taste like anything but "fried". My husband had the General Tso's, and that didn't taste much like anything, either.

After reading the reviews on Yelp, my husband and I thought we'd give this a try. Ugh!!!! Bad decision!!!! I actually felt sick after eating here. I went with the Almond boneless chicken, based on the glowing reviews, and found that the serving is definitely bountiful, but the gravy was unbelievably disgusting. I don't know how anyone can think that this is good food?! The gravy had a strange, almost metallic taste and I'm pretty sure it was made of nothing but corn starch and water. The chicken fried rice was tasty enough, but incredibly salty. Overall, I would definitely never eat here again. I much prefer Lucky Inn on Ann Arbor Rd.

This Restaurant has my favorite, Almond Boneless Chicken!!! I love the yellow gravy sauce! And, very few of the chcinese restaurant's have the yellow sauce!! So far, this is the only one other than 1 located in Troy!! So, buy my vote, HANDS down!!! Ten Yen, has the greatest Almond Chicken!!!! Also, they do have the Egg Rolls that I like!! Not found of the ones with the cabbage!! I think this will be a person choice!! But, it win's with me!

I have lived in the "hood behind Ten Yen since they opened in 1970. I started as a dishwasher in 1974 until I quit as host in 1976. I still eat there, new owners obviously. Their egg rolls are unique (use peanut butter as a binder), as is their plum sauce. Their food is not cutting edge per se. but very solidly Americanized Chinese. They will do some unusual things per request, but not on the menu. As someone, not Chinese, who did some of their prep cooking, I can say they haven't changed at all. No liquor license= nothing but good food.

At least they could of tried a little harder.... There is no excuse for the food to be just plain blend at ANY occasion. We had ordered several different type of food- from Noodles to your standard sesami chicken. It was just horrible.. Should of known better but was too tired from painting my endless walls in my newly purchased house. You would think some type of taste from the food you eat, right? I mean, tha'ts not too much to ask... is it? Regardless if Americanize or not there is no excuse for sloppyness. I would be personally embarrass to serve this.. but yet, I continue to find chinese restaurants this type of nature... Maybe people actually like this?!?

Why 5 stars? I think first and foremost is price. Well, honestly the food is really good so maybe that should be first, but we'll start with price. If you don't mind sharing, a couple can eat a good full dinner for about $12-ish bucks. Lunch for two (sharing) can be had for about $9 total. I say sharing because Ten Yen has a small issue with portion control. I don't know why and I am not gonna complain. Maybe the chef grew up poor and hungry and is making up for his lack of childhood food abundance. Maybe they don't care about making a profit on their food. I don't know, this is one of the great mysteries that is Ten Yen. An order of the lunch special almond chicken for $5.95 gets you soup (go for the Won Ton soup, it is GOOD), and egg roll (and yes the egg rolls are good, almost a meal by themselves), fried rice, and a heaping pile of chicken and gravy. If you order this by yourself you will need a to-go box. You might need a to-go box if you order this as a couple. They give you that much food. When you order as a couple they will add on $1 to share, you'll want to add $1 for soup and another $1 for a 2nd egg roll. For a grand total of $8.95 with tax and tip you are walking away for a sit down, full service lunch for two at only $10. *Updated 10/2012 - Only thing I would say has changed might be prices by $1 :) Ok, so know you know the prices are LOW and the amount of food is HIGH. I did already tell you the food is good. I didn't tell you it is fresh and prepared perfectly. Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus. So what are the cons to Ten Yen you ask? Well the worst is that the interior could use some updating, it looks like an older restaurant. It looks like the last time they updated the place was when they updated the prices. 70's? 80's? Who knows? Who cares? It is clean and the food is great. And if they did update they would likely have to raise the prices, so I say keep it the way it is. Another thing, we don't like the sweet and sour stuff. Other people do, I see them order it all the time, but we personally don't like it. Any other cons? Soda comes in a can at a $1 per. For those that complain about the no fountain so no unlimited refills, get a grip. A can is $1, 2 cans equals ....$2 and 3 cans would be $3! Yes, the same price you'll pay for "unlimited fountain $2.95" is the same as 3 cans of coke! Get over it. So what should you try if you go? Almond Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Steak Kow, Beef Peapods (add mushrooms for $1), Sesame Chicken, Shrimp fried rice and you have to try the Ten Yen Hong Kong Special (shrimp, chicken, and pork with veggies in a light white sauce over noodles - yum!) Everything is well under $10, except for the Hong Kong which is right at $10. All with more then enough food for two people. It is actually quite funny to watch a new couple order food. When it comes to the table they gasp at the size of the portions. So go gasp, Enjoy!

I swallowed my pride and tried it again. This time I went with my wife and to our surprise, there was a nice long black hair in her fried rice. That was it. I will not be going back.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
