It lived up to the hype! I've wanted to try J. Alexanders for years and finally got the chance to come for lunch. The atmosphere is beautiful. Classy, but comfortable. Nicer than chain restaurants in the area, but not overly pretenious.... This is the type of place you go to sit and enjoy a meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The menu has a little bit of everything for everyone. Pasta, fish, steak, soups, salad, appetizers, burgers and sandwiches. Yes, it's pricey, but the quantity of food and quality of service makes up for it! I came on a Saturday for lunch and ended up with a cheeseburger and fries... The burger automatically came with all the normal toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, mayo and mustard). It also came with a cup of catsup on the side for the amazing shoestring french fries. Oh, the fries. For me, they made the meal. A large amount of hot, fresh fries with just the right amount of sea salt and freshly ground pepper... Perfect! Back to the burger... it was huge (probably a half pound), but was neatly cut in half on a fresh bun. It would be perfect for sharing if you wanted. The service was exquisite... Very attentive. Friendly.. Helpful... I really can't say anything more positive about this place. If you are looking to treat yourself, this is the place. You will not be let down!

Prime rib was ok. Pricey for what you actually get. I live in texas, where some of the best steak restaurants reside. Carrot cake was delicious though. It was so moist, it was almost wet. If I go again, I'd get one of the speciality burgers.

Rattlesnake Pasta - that is all I have to say. Gotta try it (if you can handle some zip). Southwestern spices, peppers, and chicken. Portions are huge. This is what keeps me coming back - because the prices sure aren't. But, I cannot recreate the dish so I have to bite the bullet.

Nice place but way overpriced for the crappy service and slow seating that we received. We were told the way would be 20 minutes it took an hour, our waitress forgot half of our order, beautiful place nice atmosphere just should be better for what we spent.

I went out to J Alexander's on New Years Eve with a few other people. The wait time was as to be expected since it was the most busiest day for the restaurant of the year. A couple of the people already had drinks since they had gotten them while waiting but I didn't along with my boyfriend. The server took a good 10 minutes minimum to come to the table to get our drink order. I can understand that it is busy however, no matter how busy a server is, you should at least make a point to come over and say that you'll be right with us or something similar. I ordered a martini and my boyfriend ordered an old fashioned, typical drinks for a restaurant. We all saw the server walk by several times with no drinks in his hands. It had been about 15-20 minutes and it was to the point of looking for a manager to complain to since we had still not received our drinks. The server came back with a pitcher of water which was strange because non of us had water glasses and said he would be right back with our drinks. It was at least another 5 minutes before we received our drinks. When my boyfriend got his old fashioned, it was not muddled at all. There was a thick layer of sugar at the bottom of the glass, not how an old fashioned should look. We put in our food orders. The food was good, normal quality of J Alexanders. I have always loved their food, however on this occasion the service was absolutely horrible. We had ordered a second round of drinks once the food was dropped off and they came after we were practically done eating. I would rate the food 4-5 stars, however the service would get a 1, so I decided to be somewhere in the middle. I work in the service industry so I am aware that these kinda things can happen. However when a bill is over $200 for 4 people, there is no excuse to have to wait over a half hour for your first round of drinks. I have much better service at a Coney Island.

Great for business or pleasure. Feel free to go outside your comfort zone on the menu. A Prime Rib Lover's dream, some of my other favorites are the Calamari, rotisserie chicken and Alex Salad. Best all around value. think Outback meets Morton's steakhouse. Various locations are just as excelent.

Our service was excellent, and the food was very good across the board. I could have stopped at the enormous salad, which was perfect... I probably should have ended my meal there. The steak was acceptable... about 2/3's of it was very good, but the last little bit was inedible. That was a bummer, considering the price. What made up for it were the amazing fries I got on the side, soaking up all the lovely steak juice. I will be going back for sure, because the overall experience was great, and there are so many things that looked fantastic. If you have clients in town and you're on the west side, it's a safe bet. I would definitely make a reservation if you're going for dinner.

First off, we've been to this restaurant several times and we always enjoy coming back. On this occasion there were six of us and after a twenty minute wait (not bad) we were seated. Drink orders were taken and that's when the problems started. I ordered a 'dry Rob Roy' on the rocks and I sensed that the waitress wasn't familiar with this drink, so I said "this is basically a Manhattan made with Scotch and I want it with dry Vermouth". A little while later she came back and said that this drink normally is made with sweet Vermouth. That's correct I said, but I ordered a dry Rob Roy. Then she came back and asked what brand of Scotch I wanted. I told her well scotch was fine, just bring the drink. During this time, nobody else has their drinks either. Well finally all the drinks are brought out, no wait, one gal is still waiting for her's. We got the food orders in and when the food was brought out, the lady still didn't have her drink (a Rum and Coke). There were no major complaints about the food (my Rattlesnake pasta was very good, but only warm when it hit the table, and my wife's fries were cold). One fellow that ordered a Filet Mignon medium, got it more medium well. I didn't see any pink at all. We asked for bread three times and it showed up as the meal was just about over. For the Coup d'grace, we paid with a gift card worth more than the bill, so it had to be brought back. After about five or six minutes we finally see our waitress and ask her where is the card? "Oh, I handed that off to someone else, I'll go and check on it" Finally got it and we all left. It just seemed to us that everything (bar, cooking station, and wait staff) was uncoordinated that evening. Wait I almost forgot, carrot cake all around and it was terrific!

This is part of a chain and it was pretty busy early evening on a Wednesday. I went for a glass of zin from a pretty extensive wine menu. My prime rib was hefty and done just right. All in all a pretty good steak house.

Went for lunch after a movie. Ordered the Alexander salad and baked potato. It seems the salads have gotten smaller with less cheese. Mostly lettuce. The loaded potato was luke warm. Staff can be very annoying. I am sure it is their policy but they interrupt conversation constantly to inquire as to whether everything is ok and to fill water glasses (although they put a pitcher on the table.) I don't blame the waitress because as I stated this is obviously what they are expected to do. We have had the same experience every time we have gone there. We used to really enjoy our little luncheons there, but I think we will look for something else in future.

I have been in 4 seperate locations for this chain and Love this the very best. Food and staff are wonderful. Why did I not give them a 5 Star? Because this location refuses to offer carry-out Either from the table or overthephone. The other JAlexander's Do offer Carryout..........Oh well, the manager at least runs a nice restaurant other than that

I've been going to J. Alexander's for years...my parents are big fans, as are my husband and I. The food and service are always top-notch. It's not cheap, but I've always come out of their feeling like it was money well-spent. I won't go into my favorite dishes, because seriously everything is really good. If you're into steak, fish, salads, mac and cheese, whatever - order it there, and you'll love it. The wine list is also very nice, and the drinks are healthily strong. Today, though, I got to experience the great service in a new way. My husband and I started with the smoked salmon dip, which was a generous portion of chunks and flakes of smoked salmon held together with chopped eggs and (I think) mayo, served with thin toasts on the side. Wonderful. He ordered the steak and fries, I ordered the cypress salad (which involves chicken tenders, avocado and ranch dressing - need I say more?), and we ordered a side of the special vegetable of the day, brussel sprouts and cauliflower with herb-y, parmesan-y breadcrumbs. The steak and veggies came out, but no salad.... I started to munch on the veggies and my husband tucked into his steak. (It comes with a dollop of herbed butter on top, and he likes to mix it in with the fries, so after he eats the steak, he gets to have buttery fries that have also soaked up the steak's juices...divine) We waited 7 or 8 minutes, and no salad. Our server stopped by, looking aghast. "Where is your salad?!" she asked. I smiled, shrugged, and said that it hadn't come out yet. Within two minutes, a manager hustled out the salad, apologized profusely, and said that they would take care of it - take it off the bill. In all of my years going to Alexanders, I've never witness a break-down in their well-oiled machinery. Evidently it was more of a surprise to them than it was to me. They really didn't need to comp the dish, but it speaks volumes to the kind of standard they set for their service. You will never wait for a refill. A dirty dish will never languish in front of you. That, plus great food - that's why it's a perennial favorite in my family.

Back to the day of long hair, aviator glasses, platform shoes with plaid flair pants with big cuffs and tight printed tee shirts. Yes, I have pictures of me dressed like that. It's that time of the year again. It's Kenny's birthday and his choice for dinner. Kenny brought a file of some ancient stuff from when we were back in high school, but first the meal. I chose the 12 oz. Filet with a mild creamy sauce. Go figure, meat and potatoes. Talk about a thick filet. Prepared medium with plenty of juices flowing out as I gently sliced into the chunk of delicious meat. Slather on a side of outstanding delicious mashed potatoes piled high and drizzled with a little garlic butter. Some of the best beef in the area. As we downed our meals with a slug of america's finest brew we looked at some old high school pictures that Kenny dug up from his parents attic. We never ate this good back then. Good food, good friend, good times.

Ken and I always say this place has the best of everything, but we also always get the same meal. Spinach queso app. Salad (regular for me + ranch and Caesar for him) with croissant rolls (you need to request these or you won't get them), Next up, steaks (filet for me and strip for him, or sometimes we get crazy and order the prime rib end cut - fab). I substitute whatever potato side I'm supposed to get with their fresh veg (which has been haricot verts a couple times, but truly delish heirloom tomato slices this last time). They have the best dirty martini I have ever had, complete with blue cheese stuffed olives. Did I mention that they serve the drink with a sidecar... of another drink!!! Two martinis!! (so why do I often order two? OK, so Ken drives home after we eat here...). I think it costs around $10... maybe $13. So worth it. Impeccible service. You have a waiter assigned to your table, but the whole staff in that area rotates through your table. Friendly, very knowledgable (big pet peeve of mine when the staff doesn't even eat there! here, the staff has tried all the dishes so they can honestly answer all your questions). They do call ahead seating, which I highly recommend, especially on weekends. You feel super cool breezing through the door and past the teeming masses waiting for a table to the host counter, only to be seated promptly (try not to look back and smile at the masses) or receive a buzzer and get seated 10 minutes later (also try to keep gloat face to a minimum). This is my husband's favorite restaurant. It's expensive (we drop about $120 for the two of us) so we reserve it for special dates. Love it.

I'm a vegetarian, and this is the BEST veggie burger I have ever had. My best friend is vegan and requested no butter on the bun, no mayo & no cheese which made it a vegan burger. This is a very nice restaurant but isn't so dressy that you have to get dressed up specifically to go there. Great during lunch or dinner time. I only wish that they did carry out!

What is with these reviews? J. Alexander's is the utmost in style over substance. I recently with here with friends who rave about it, and was blown away when entering. The place is gorgeous, the seating is fantastic, the ambiance is great... Then... the food. The menu is limited, which is fine for a place that does things well. But this place didn't. Food was decidedly unlocal, lacking any actual punch of flavor, and incredibly overpriced. I think people get starry-eyed at the experience and don't pay attention to the "bland American" food they are being served. But hey, it IS America...

If you like Prime Rib, then stop by and give it a try! Everything is a-la-carte, so in addition to the prime rib, if you want sides, each side items are $4. Order the Mac & Cheese, its really good. To start, order their onion rings, its very good; I also love their calamari!. If you are looking to order a salad, try 'Thai Kai Salad', of all the salads, this is my favorite. Last time I was there, we met up for a friends birthday dinner - two people from our group ordered the special steak medium, they came almost well done, they took it back, recooked and offered free desserts on the house. Service is excellent from the moment you walk into the restaurant.

My first visit to a J Alexanders and I'm a fan. We stopped in for dinner after I got in late from a flight - at 9, it was still busy which speaks volumes in this economy. Upon entering the restaurant, I immediately thought of Houstons - same kind of decor and the menus looked alike. However, the J Alexanders menu was more extensive with more fish and steak selections than Houstons has. The prices on the wine list were great - I estimate only a 50% markup (versus the 100+% at most restaurants). And the wine list was very good and featured a number of very good, less available wines. We had the Domaine Druhin pinot and liked it a lot. I had the chicken sandwich with a baked potato and my date had the ahi sandwich. We both liked our selections. I was especially happy that the baked potato skin was crisp with a nice amount of salt. The chicken breast was a bit small but I'll give it another try before judging it.

J Alexander's in Livonia, has, and always will be, my favorite restaurant in the Livonia area. The food is worth the prices, the French Dip, the salads, and Mr. Jacks are all great entrees. The wait staff is quite a bit better than other restaurants in the area. Worth the visit if you're from the area.

The food is very nice, for the most part, and everyone in our family has their favorites - I love the veggie burger and fish (always perfectly cooked), my husband enjoys the salads and filet. The kids like the steak and fries and chicken. My family loves the spinach dip app, but I think it tastes like Velveeta. I love the MBC coleslaw but my husband says there is too much MBC. I miss the Black and Blue salad from years past. The ambiance is really nice if you are in a booth, but my big complaint is the service - the waitstaff know their stuff and are very attentive - TOO attentive - at dinner time I feel like cattle being pushed through a chute! It seems as if there are cameras watching the table so they can rush the next course out just as we put our forks down! It was so unpleasant this last visit that we have hesitated returning.

This place is classic- low lit, dark woods, great for date nite. The food is pricey for a 'more casual' restaurant, but highly recommended. The servers are very attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. DEF. start with the spinach con queso, it's delicious and served with fresh chips and great salsa. Pretty much everything in the place is homemade including the salad dressings and sauces. Steak Barrasso is a great option for steak lovers and the pork tenderloin has a great Asian sauce.

What a solid place for American fare. I've been going here for years with the family and their service is always spot on. Their system of rotating waiters/waitresses to efficiently get the food on the table and refill drinks always impresses us. We usually start with calamari and the ending is always an empty plate of it; it's tender, lightly-breaded and goes down real easy when dunked in marinara. The carnivore in me usually goes for the prime rib: rich, tender, meaty goodness. If you wanna save a couple bucks and get a smaller portion, you can get it as a prime rib sandwich or a french dip. Both served with crusty bread and fries. The pork tenderloin is good too, it's got an asian sweet chili thing going on. A very solid 4 stars and a fist pound to the manager for this well-oiled machine of a restaurant. Cheers!

On Saturday I called to make a reservation for 8 people at 6 pm and was told that they do not take reservations. Also I was informed that at 530 to 6 is when their wait times start, so I arrived 10 min early to make sure we would have a spot and was informed that they already sat all the tables that would fit 8. Our wait time would be 70 to 80 minutes. Any restaurant that turns away a business party of 8 for first come first serve, service is not practicing good business. I will not be suggesting going to any of the J Alexander restaurants if you are bringing more than a couple. First come, first served just doesn't work for large parties during busy times.

Some of the best prime rib ever prepared; very classy yet comfortable inside. Always friendly staff - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! * This is the only steak house that can prepare a steak that I find better than what I can prepare on my own BBQ.

  • Jonathan M.

This is my favorite restaurant. All the food here is amazing. It's always a challenge deciding what I want because everything is sooo good and I want it all. Like other's have said the mac and cheese is the best you'll ever have (even though they removed the bacon) and it's a side so it's only $5. The food here can get kind of pricey, $18 for a chicken tenders dinner, but is is definitely worth it. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the other 2 locations in Sommerset and West Bloomfield are better.

The prime rib was the best I've ever had (no kidding); that includes Lawry's in Beverly Hills,CA where I ate recently. The carrot cake is unbelievable.

Best New York strip I have ever had! (shhh, dont tell my husband). Great service and food. They even gave my daughter an etch a sketch to play with during the wait time. Try the Key lime pie also. Perfection! A little pricey here, so expect to drop a few $$, but so worth it!

Enjoyed a very nice dinner here on a Friday night. We called ahead for reservations, and still had to wait another 20 minutes, but it went by fast. The service is very good. We were well taken care of, but not over bothered. The food was very tasty, and our drinks delicious! I look forward to visiting again!

I used to go here when I lived in FL and when I lived in MI, so I know this place. They need to come to CA, seriously. I love the J Salad with their wonderful honey mustard. The Lime Chicken is so juicy & their garlic mashed potatoe, wonderful. They have great Cosmos that included another full side glass, so you actually get 2.

  • JT G.

This restaurant is really overpriced for the quality of food. Out of a party of four we all ordered different things prime rib, roasted chicken, chicken fingers, and turkey club probably would do better to keep driving north to Friday's for the same food at half the price. The dining room was cluttered with a dozen or so extra chairs, not sure why maybe they were missing a table? The only positive is the service, the server, manager, and hostess were very friendly and professional.

This restaurant is one of my favorites. Every dish I've had here has been outstanding. Their prime rib sandwich is had to resist. The not-your-ordinary-mac-and-cheese is definately not ordinary. It's mac-n-cheese for grownups! This particular j. Alex's (Livonia Mi) has the best atmosphere of all of the ones I've been to. If I had to ding them on anything, it would be their limited choice of draft beer. They also have an AMAZING Crabcake dinner that is just outstanding. I'm surprised at some of the comments about prices... Yes.. the food here is a little more expensive, but I'm appalled at the person who compared it to TGI Fridays. Maybe if they didn't get Chicken Strips everywhere they went, they'd have a different perspective.. If you're looking for above-average food at an above-average restaurant with an above-average decore, and above-average quality if service, at granted, an above average price, then try J. Alexanders... I think you'll be happy.

It was with some trepidation that I stopped in yesterday to pick up a carry-out veg. burger and French dip sand. around noon. Bartendress asked me "do you know about our carry-out policy?" I said I knew it was messed up. Which is true. They require the meal to be served, on a plate, then transferred to a styrofoam container at the bar. Environmentally stupid, because a dishwasher has to needlessly clean the plates. Bar-grl said policy is to prevent kitchen from getting backed up. I looked around. Restaurant was 1/2-full, nobody seemed too busy. I told her the J. Alex. in Farmington Hills lets you call in for a carry out, and that their policy kind of sucked. In this economy, you want to turn away business, I asked, when Andiamo's across the road gladly accepts carry-out calls. She seemed indifferent to my opinion that they were anti-customer svc. Food: good, but way overpriced.

    J. Alexander's has been there for years so it must be doing something right. Given the economy and it's prime location, the quality and service is winning. It is located near the AMC 20 and can be seen from the road. It's got an overall selection of dishes and great quality. If you are looking for a nice resteraunt for a special occasion, I would go here. It's a nice layout and nice service too!

I used to eat here occasionally for lunch when I worked in the area. Tonight we were coming back from the airport, passing Haggerty Road, so we decided to have dinner here. The meal was OK, but the food was not as good as I had remembered. I ordered the roast chicken and an Alexander Salad. The salad was as good as it always has been; nice and fresh and lightly dressed. The chicken however was disappointing, While flat plates were available, a couple of the party had sandwiches served on them, the chicken came piled on top of mashed potatoes in a soup bowl. This made it extremely difficult to eat without making quite a mess. And the chicken itself was overly seasoned. The skin was coated with a dense layer of salty mixture, so thick in fact that the skin was not edible. The mashed potatoes were only accessible once enough of the chicken was consumed and much of it was jammed into the carcass of the chicken and onto the outsides. I had never ordered half a roasted chicken there before, but if I ever do, I think I will ask for the chicken to be served on a separate plate or maybe I will ask for fries instead of the mashed potatoes. The place has high ceilings and it was loud in there tonight. IT was so loud in fact, that we could not have a conversation at the table without yelling. I used to really like this place and perhaps for a nice burger at lunch I would still like it. But tonight, it wasn't a wonderful experience. It looks like the prices have crept up a bit too, Oh well, everything changes.

J'Al's, how do I love thee! I know they're a chain and I don't care because I can count on them to serve great tasting food, prepared with high quality ingredients, every time. My husband and I love the macaroni and cheese. My entire family loves the chicken pasta soup and the chips and salsa appetizer. The Alex's Salad is really good and is always prepared using the freshest lettuce and veggies (they used to serve it with warm croissants but they are now only available upon request; but, they are worth requesting). It has a very attractive decor and the service is great. This is a great place for almost any occasion. If you go, be sure and get the carrot cake for dessert. It's the best I've ever had!

The food is magnific! I love this place. When I moved back to the states this is the first restaurant I chose to eat at. I love their rattlesnake pasta and their croissants are good (so flaky and full of flavor). Their salads are always always always fresh. Their salsa and chips are good because, they make the salsa there and use fresh cilantro which is a quality I don't usually find in a restaurant; especially at this price range. They aren't that expensive when taking into consideration the quality of the food. They also serve the skinny style fries which are my favorite. The staff is pretty good too. I just wish they offered carry-out and I would eat there more often.

Great atmosphere with a very professional wait staff. All the food is made to order with the freshest of ingredients. Try the chips and salsa as an appetizer. The veggie burgers are made from scratch daily and are hand made patties. The restrooms are very clean. There is an open kitchen with hand stoked hickory grill. I have never had a bad meal or service at J Alexander's.

I am usually a big fan but not this time. The service was really slow it took along time to put in our drink order then the waiter was more interested in his visiting friends than our table. I had the Tuna which was very good but the vegetables were very salty. I will go back but was disappointed.

If your familiar with Hillstone Restaurants and or Houstons you will see that this place is an very good example of, Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Sorry to say even though they had the same decor, menu and Prices, they are no Houstons or R and D Kitchen. Was visiting in the area and googled local restaurants and found this place, went to there website to check it out and felt the website, for lack of a better word, STUNK!!! Hated the Website, what Restaurant Website does not show a Menu???? So I went to..... You Guessed it... Yelp!!! Read yelp and decided to go, it was a total of 3 of us. Like I said, the website does not have a Menu just pictures of food and we all know how deceiving that can be. I ASSumed the place was more of a family place when I decided to go, it isn't. Its more of a very expensive American Fare restaurant. Gave my name and told her we would be at the bar, she didn't listen because I was coming back from the bathroom and heard her calling my name, they would have skipped over us had I not heard her. We were seated at a bare table, NOTHING was on the table, didn't give it a second thought because I assumed thats how they do it. Laportia was our waitress and if it wasn't for her, her charm and professionalism this review would have been considerable worse, she saved the evening. We ordered 3 apps and one came out in 30 seconds. One tiny problem, No Plates, Napkins, Forks or Knives, Salt or Pepper. Apps were, Deviled eggs, Smoked Salmon Spread and Grilled Artichokes. Since this place was such a Hillstone Rip off I figured the R and D Deviled Eggs would Rock.... They were a 2 The Houstons Grilled Artichokes were tasty but too small which made them very difficult to eat, flavor was there though. The Houstons smoked salmon that they turned into a spread was ok, would have rathered just the smoked salmon, but it was the winner out of the 3. The 2 Filets and mashed potatoes were delicious, my salmon was not good and very over cooked, no I did not send it back and I know I should have. Was raised by Depression era people and we don't throw food out, didn't like the Slaw either. Again if it wasn't for Laporita I would have done 2 stars because I feel the place does not deliver based on price and presentation. Also took offense at what a Rip-Off of Houstons the place was, even the same lights above the tables. FYI... NO, I never worked for Hillstone, just ate at many or their restaurants COUNTLESS times.

Inhale. I love the wood-burning aromas that linger throughout this restaurant. J. Alexander's is one of those go-to restaurants that always delivers. Throughout the years, we've celebrated birthdays and other special occasions, as well as enjoyed leisurely lunches and dinners here. I've savored so many great meals here it is difficult to narrow it down to just a few. * The battered chicken fingers are crispy and tender. Accompanied by a mountain of shoestring French fries and served with two different sauces, both the chicken and fries are equally delicious. And the portion size is massive. I don't think I saw this dish on the menu the last few times I was there but I could have skated over this item due to familiarity. * The rare prime rib is tender and flavorful and is served au jus. Roasted and well-seasoned, the prime rib is steakhouse-delicious. I typically get it with the loaded baked potato (sour cream, melted cheese, crispy bacon, and fresh green onions), instead of the smashed, for my definition of the perfect meal. Their fish of the day, as well as the Ahi Tuna Steak, are both worth trying. On a recent visit, I started the meal with fresh, chunky guacamole, served with lightly salted chips and spicy salsa that had a nice bite from the onions. The medium-rare burger with Tillamook cheese was quite nice, topped with thinly-sliced tomatoes, fresh pickles, and red onions. It was served, as a number of other meals, with their spectacular fries. J. Alexander's is incredibly flexible and allows guests to substitute one side for another. If you are so inclined, you may want to try the "Not Your Ordinary" mac and cheese. This side, in addition to the baked potato, deserves a special mention: tender noodles are baked in an appetizing and luscious cheese sauce with a crunchy breadcrumb topping. Personally, I think it goes well with most of the entrées. My friends love the carrot cake here. I sometimes think they select this place based on the cake alone. I confess that it is not as memorable for me (even with the thick layer of cream cheese frosting); I tend to be partial to chocolate. Service is consistently good. The servers good-naturedly tolerate our long meals as we nattered on throughout the night.

It's a tradition to eat here for my dad's birthday. Prime rib every time. And it's delicious. The prime rib is tender, juicy, succulent everything you want it to be. However, everything was really salty. The calamari, my prime rib and my green beans. Gosh I swear, if you zoom in my photo, you'll see 16 sea salt granules on each green bean! I couldn't eat it. I took it home to rinse off my veggies so I could eat it. Sad day. Please cut back on the salt!!! Please!!!

Last meal was terrible. Ordered a cheeseburger and french fries. My meal came and i think is had 27 thin french fries and my hamburger was cut in half with 80% of the hamburger on one side. My french fries were very salty. I asked for medium rare and it was well. I told the waitress about my meal. I felt that there was much care that went into preparing the meal and that it was slapped together. I ordered a piece of carrot cake which of, course is great. My bill came to 28.00..........I was disappointed in my meal overall. One reason I like Alexanders is when I order medium rare...it comes medium rare......and its hot inside.......but this time....ugh.....no more Alexanders for me.

Everything about this place was excellent from the ambiance to the meal to the waitstaff. I love when I don't have to ask for refills (take it as you will). I like to know that the waitstaff is paying attention and making sure that my dining experience is a good one. The wife and I both had Manhattans and boy do the bartender know his/her stuff.. One drink was more than enough!! I can only say that everything was great.

Enjoyed both the ambience and the entree. Nice, quiet atmosphere for a business lunch. I had the French Dip which was accompanied by shoestring fries. Prime rib was featured. And, it was exceptionally cooked to a mouth watering medium rare. Taste and consistency was awesome. Fries were golden brown and very moist. We enjoyed!

This was my second visit to this place and I must say this restaurant is on point 5 stars for consistency but im talking a star down because the potatoe soup was too salty.

J Alex.. the place we end up at when we have no idea what to have for dinner! This happens more than it should, but that's fine with me since I enjoy the food and atmosphere. A few things that are on the regular menu and always a hit with us start with their spinach queso appetizer, oh my is this good. I usually am not a fan of melted, goopy cheese in a bowl.. but this kind is just ridiculous. So good. My husband is a fan of their burgers with firm brioche buns, and I am happy to eat the shoe string fries that come along with his meal. One meal, two happy souls! Because I can't live off of fries alone, 99% of the time I end up with some kind of seafood choice. The fish tacos are lightly battered and are different depending on the day, they use whichever fish is the special for that day. The spicy sauce it comes with is actually spicy - just an FYI! Also a favorite on the regular menu is the prime rib, I mean.. you can't really go wrong with prime rib. As opposed to many restaurants that only serve this once a week, at J Alexander's you can have this whenever you want. During our last visit my husband had their ribs, he says they were very good. I was a fan of the fruity, light barbecue sauce they came with - him not so much. It is thinner, lighter, and fruitier than most, if you are expecting or hoping for a sugary smoky sauce then this is not the one for you. I am a fan of their daily specials, usually I end up ordering whatever special fish they have. Or should I say fish special.. Either way, I cannot say I have ever had a special (or meal in general) here that I did not like.

Love this place, it's consistently good with expecially service. Your drink will always be refilled and servers are very attentive. The food is bold and flavorful. I love the Hyde Park, rattlesnake pasta, and carrot cake. It's all so good!

I would have given this place 5 stars but the prices have gone through the roof. I felt bad because someone else was buying us dinner and I had suggested it. I was genuinely shocked at the menu. It was pretty busy but we were seated within about 10 minutes (party of 4). The service was okay. It seemed like our server was near the end of her shift and ready to go home. The food was good. The Rattlesnake pasta is still a favorite, but I just can't see charging that much for chicken pasta. My friend had a filet, again overpriced. Worst part - they no longer have the honey mustard dipping sauce for the awesome little french fries. Honestly, we could have gone to Ruth's Chris and spent about the same amount and had a better meal.

I love this restaurant. I have been many times and I have not even begun to get tired of it. There are so many good items on the menu. It's great for a date night or with friends. You won't see a lot of kids here. At least I haven't and the two occasions that I brought my kids, they were not impressed. They did not have a kids menu. It's sort of dark inside but in a good, romantic way. It's clean and modern. The service is always good. I don't think I have ever eaten a carrot cake better than the one they have here. Not to mention, it's huge. Definitely enough to share or take home for leftovers.

J Alexander's has a dark but upscale ambiance. The staff are professional and attentive without constantly bothering you. Each time I have been here I get the steak & fries. A cooked to your liking steak with a pat of garlic butter on top with a large portion of shoestring fries, yum!

I used to love J Alexanders when I worked in Troy , so I figured its a chain what could go wrong. Well my Cosmopolitan made with Stoli were delicious. They have changed their menu in the past 5 years since I last visited, they dont have my favorite chicken salad any more with the best dressing ever I used to love. I tried their spicy thai salad, gross. It has this thick, salty slightly spicy peanut dressing that I sent back because I just could not stomach eating that. The spinach artichoke dip is yummy. I ended up ordering the rattlesnake pasta dish, that has cajan flavoring with peppers and chicken. You can never go wrong with that. My son had the chicken tenders and fries which looked yummy. No processed chicken bits, and the fries were well cooked not too hard .

Adding a star! Visited while in Michigan this past Christmas and hotdamn the original smashed potatoes are back!!!! I had to go to Jay's twice that week in Michigan because I had to be sure it wasn't a fluke. And it wasn't. The food was delicious, and the service and ambiance impeccable, as usual. So happy that my smashed potatoes came back. Don't change the recipe again!!

Decent food forced atmosphere. I have gotten lunch here a few times. I hate how dark & cold it is year round. The food isn't good enough in my opinion to have to deal with a mediocre typical restaurant atmosphere. You really feel like just another table. While I've been here numerous times can't think of one thing to recommend. If you like basic... Safe... Boring... Blah.. Go here! Was just thinking today how much I never want to go back here. :-) your fellow foodie Marissa

Busy busy on Mother's Day . Service was a 3.5, hostess was 4. Food was between a 2-4. Steak brazzo was a huge disappointment. Small chunks of "fillet' so well done that I was excessively chewing the meat just to get it down my throat. The Madeira sauce was yummy. The potatoes were good. This dish deserved a 2.. Not worth the $$$ Fillet without any sauce was absolutely great. Nice size, nice crust and so tender. Wish I had ordered it... Son substituted baked potato for fries. The fries are shoestring and meh Hubs ordered the Alex Salad $10 and it was the same size as my side Alex salad that I paid $5 for. I think the waiter made a mistake. There's no way that was an entree salad. Hubs wouldn't let me take a pic to post and by the time our waiter came back around hubs was half done. The food comes out super fast.

I love J. Alexander's but some of their recent changes do not make for an enjoyable dining experience. They only offer call ahead seating but only for parties of 4 or less, which makes absolutely no sense. If you're going with a big party then you'll have to wait at least an hour. They no longer (within the last two months) offer crab cakes, although they remain on the menu. I'm sure I'm bias because crab cakes were my favorite, but removing them from the menu is enough to make me never return. The service used to be wonderful, but is now lacking. Our most recent server didn't know anything about the menu items, and was far too soft spoken to hear and understand. The specials never change and don't seem to offer anything different than what's already on the menu. In all, in the future, when I want steak I'll go elsewhere.

This place is outrageous, in a bad way! I go to the one in Toledo, approximately twice a month. You will pay a lot more @ this location than Toledo. Let me explain. The menu prices LOOK basically the same, however, if you order a steak @ the Toledo location your salad comes with it. Not here, & we just took for granted it did. We payed nearly what we would normally pay @ Fleming's. When our bill came we were shocked, guess we should have payed attention. Usually I spare no expense when it comes to eating out, but I also expect to get what I pay for? Very disappointed. J. Alexander's, you are just not in the class of restaurants to be charging these prices. I will stick with Fleming's, when in the area. The only reason you get 3 stars is because of service alone. I would highly recommend if you are wanting a nice dinner in this area, go to Fleming's! Sorry :-(

Fazit: Good and fast service. Good food. Acceptable prices!

Excellent service, phenomenal food! Had the calamari to get it started...little pricey at $17 but very good. I had steak tacos--very good and good value. Also had ribeye and that was excellent!!!! I would come back again!

Can't go wrong with the grilled chicken salad. My favorite. The mash potatoes are creamy and full of flavor. If you have a young kid who is a steak lover, the kids prime rib is a nice size for the portion. My guy devours his whole meal. Nice size portions for all there meals. We are regulars.

My husband and I love this place. The food is always good and the quality is consistent. Our favorites are the NY Strip, Mac and Cheese and of course, the carrot cake is to die for. Make sure you plan for a wait, especially on a Fri or Sat night, but it's definitely worth it.

  • Nunya B.

Let me start off by saying that this j. alexander restaurant is quite comical. They have the worst food of any location, but don't do carry out? LMAO! So they made me waste a servers time by sitting in his booth only to order my salad and have a carry out box brought out at the same time. *sigh* Someone has them convinced that they are The Capital Grille! More like Ruth's Chris... On their WORST night... Dry steaks piled with butter, dry salmon, undercooked veggies... They're lucky I even came here for a salad, which is comparable to Wendy's... Next time, I'll drive a bit further... For Wendy's!

Great atmosphere. The long wait on a Friday wasn't too bad with good company. The sides were the best part of my meal however. The steak originally came undercooked and bland. Once it came back, cooked a little more but still bland.

I always enjoy J. Alexander's. It is definitely my favorite chain restaurant. Their menu selections are classic upscale American, and I always want most things on the menu. My favorite is the Alex's Salad and also the Jack's Chicken Platter. My husband likes the Rattlesnake Pasta best. We've tried many other dishes on the menu, and none have disappointed! The portions of all meals are enormous and definitely shareable.

This place stays crowded. The food is great. The prices are a little higher than a traditional sit down place and bar. But the service and taste makes up for it. Get ready for a wait. I would recommend it.

So, this is one of the places that my dad is obsessive about. The food is generally good and the servers are nice, but there are a few things that tend to irk me & why its only a-ok. 1) they frequently prep fish the wrong way. For example, the tuna steaks come and they are super think and cut oddly so it makes it nearly impossible for you to cut across the grain so you can eat it. I spent have the meal wrestling with the muscle fibers 2) they tend to go over board with dressing/sauce so if I forget to ask for something on the side its usually gross. On the plus side, if I feel like being a bad runner, the fries here are delicious. I also love the beefsteak tomatoes. Not a terrible chain, I don't mind that my dad is obsessed with going here. I just need to stop ordering tuna ever.

  • Magnus L.

On the occasion we went, the service was flawless. They waited just the right amount of time before checking with you if you're ready to order, we always received drink refills long before we needed a refill. We had a spinach queso, it was good with good flavors. I picked the steak brazzo as the main meal and it was really good. Cooked exactly like I wanted it, the mashed potatoes that came with it was excellent and it wasn't lacking anything. We finished the meal with a carrot cake, that must have been one of the best carrot cakes I've had! I couldn't have asked for a better dinner experience and it was an excellent parent's night out.

I was recommended to J Alexander for "the best cheese burger in the world." I was skeptical, but gave it a shit. I'm not a huge fan of chain restaurants, but this place was alright. I ordered a house salad and side of fries with my cheese burger. There were plenty of other items on the menu I would have liked to try, but I was on a mission. The side salad was AWESOME. It was bigger and better dressed than almost any other I have tried. My only complaint is that the burger came out before I was finished with my salad. Otherwise everything was fine. I wouldn't go as far as saying it was the best burger in the world, but it was good. The fries reminded of me gourmet steak n' shake fries, which I loved. My bartender Lindsey was awesome.

I have been to this location twice in the past couple weeks and have had a wonderful experience both times! The service is excellent, the waitstaff and hostesses went out of their way to meet our needs on each visit. I prefer this location to the Troy one as it is more relaxed although still classy. My friend ordered the Rattlesnake pasta on our first visit and could not stop raving about it. I chose the Ahi Tuna salad and was extremely pleased with the results although I would probably get the dressing on the side next time. On the following visit we both had cravings for red meat, I ordered the Steak Maui, a marinated ribeye with smashed potatoes on the side and both were to die for. My friend had a one of the burgers and couldn't even finish it which was a rare occurrence. Definitely returning to this location soon!

  • Malinda M.

This place is beautiful and relaxing to dine in. The menu is a little basic but the quality is perfection. You truly pay for what you get. I was kinda confused how the service works only because we had five different people greet us. Despite that our food came out extremely quick and steaming hot. I ordered the Tuna Steak, really delicious but the au jus that came with it a little salty (minor detail). This is not really a place for children either. Its more of a date night or meeting place. The wine list is kinda crazy!

What do we remember most from our visit? The non-stop replacement of our soft drinks. As soon as you got close to half done, a server swooped in with a new replacement and took the half empty one away. The portions are huge and the food is pretty good, although pricey. The Alex Salad was good with the Champagne Vinaigrette. One of the features of the day was a seared Ahi Tuna Burger - tasty. One comment on service - by the time we got our drinks, at least five people had assisted us. One to open the door to great us, another to assign us to a table, another to seat us, etc., etc. etc. The service was seamless between all of them.

Terrible food especially the steak it was like marinated in A1 sauce or something it's terrible it made me sick. Over priced for quality of food you get. They used to be so good but they changed their food and it sucks now. They don't have many choices of what too get either. The only thing that was good was the service, the waitress was really nice and on top of things.

    (1)
  • Torrie M.

This is a great location with outstanding servers, awesome food...but wait, why four stars? If you want a table here, you will have a long wait ahead of you. Other than the long wait, you will enjoy a wide variety of cocktails and wine (their specialize in martinis and mojitos made from scratch) and the best steaks in the area! Save room for chocolate cake (it's out of this world).

Been here a few times since we moved to the area, and my husband and I really enjoy the food and the atmosphere. We've ordered the Scottish salmon a few times and it's been great every time; what's even better is that it tastes fantastic as leftovers the next day. Service and quality of food has been consistent so far, and I really enjoy their cocktails. I wish they had more craft beers available, as Michigan has some really great local breweries. I only have one small gripe, and perhaps it's because I've only lived in the area a few months, but I've yet to see the specials change. I know it's a chain restaurant, but in my opinion, you shouldn't even have such a menu if you aren't changing it fairly regularly - it completely negates the purpose. I'll reserve my judgment, as fall is approaching and I'm hoping to see if they at least change it seasonally.

  • Michael L.

This was more of a 3.5 star review but downgrading it seemed more fair. Going on a Saturday evening, it wasn't terribly crowded, which is good or bad news depending on how you look at it. The decor is very dark and a bit minimalistic in my opinion. I have no problems with the service as they were always attentive. My gripe is the menu or lack thereof. It didn't really fit the place and seemed very overpriced ($16 for calamari). I did enjoy the steak and fries. It was cooked to perfection. That being said, a dinner for two ranges close to $100 and it didn't fit compared to some higher class places that would total out about the same.

Because of their reputation and premium prices, I hold Alexander's to a higher standard than the average restaurant. I've been going to this particular location for several years and have noticed that like a lot of other places, the quality is gradually slipping. Our very good friend wanted to go here for her birthday, so we agreed. She ordered the chicken salad which was only average, her partner ordered steak which was overcooked, tough and dry. My wife ordered the cheeseburger, which she said was average (but cost $14). Our bar in town makes a better burger for $6.75. I saved the best (OK, worst) for last. I ordered the $31 Ahi tuna. The instant our waitress placed it in front of me I knew there was a problem. I took a small bite with my fork and before I could put it in my mouth I smelled SPOILED FISH. It stunk. I've cooked enough fish in my 6+ decades to know that this piece of fish STUNK the instant it hit the grille - meaning the cook KNEW he/she was sending out an old, spoiled piece of fish. I flagged down our waitress and politely informed her I was sending it back. She said she'd bring me a new order. I waited between 10-15 minutes then flagged down our waitress and canceled the Ahi order. I just wasn't hungry any more and still had the taste/odor of bad fish in my mouth. Our bill for three meals - a burger, chicken salad and a small steak, with drinks, was more than $130. Personally, I think that is highway robbery. This used to be a nice place. I doubt if I'll go back. The waitress was nice but you don't eat the waitresses.

I am not a fan of chains but J. alexander's does it right. I started off with my usual 1/2 gin / 1/2 vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives - everything done to perfection! We split a bowl of the gumbo which was unlike any gumbo I have ever eaten - no okra - a great complex broth made it very good - they should have called it NYO (not your ordinary) just like the mac & cheese. My ribeye (rare) was done to perfection - wonderful and although I'm not a big fan of mac & cheese their NYO Mac & Cheese was extraordinary. A great dinner!

  • Matthew L.

Found this to be an exquisite experience. Started with the chili, and it's the best I've had since my Mothers. You're just going to have to take my word for it when I tell you that this is exceedingly high praise. Then, the Ahi Tuna Salad w/ vinaigrette. Again - delish. The tuna was cooked perfectly. After seeing all the commentary here about their carrot cake, I had to have some, and I couldn't be happier that I did. It seems an unspoken law that restaurants either get the dinner OR the dessert right. Not so here - top notch on both!

  • Cari M.

I don't usually prefer chain restaurants to local joints but J.Alexander's is the most consistently great restaurant I've ever experienced. I've been countless times & never been disappointed. They pride themselves on excellent service and it shows. The Mexico City Spinach Con Queso is SO GOOD. It may seem like it's just another chips and dip but it's definitely a lot better then any other queso! Their burgers, sandwiches, tacos, steak, and pasta are all great but my personal favorite menu item that I now get every time I come is a SALAD! All their salads are exceptional but I personally love the grilled chicken salad. The chicken is sliced thinly and is so flavorful. I have a rather high maintence order removing and adding things to the salad and it is never a problem. Great side item choices and their carrot cake is hot, gooey, and worth every calorie! I'm not sure if they still do this but you used to be able to ask for croissants and they bring them out free of charge and drizzled with a little honey while waiting for your meal. They might not carry them any more though. I visited J's the day after Christmas taking an out of town guest with me and they were very impressed. I love the low lighting, and kindness of the employees. There is often a wait here but it is worth it. Best of all I ALWAYS have leftovers as portions are huge so I get to enjoy the food for two meals which makes the prices worth it too.

  • Joe L.

Consistently, J Alexander's is a great place for drinks and dinner: perfect for an impromptu evening, no reservation typically necessary. I usually start with a cocktail from their menu, followed by a soup, then the prime rib with a glass of wine, ending with their carrot cake and a cup of coffee. All of which, I enthusiastically recommend. I don't even like carrot cake, but this incarnation transcends all others. The staff is equally consistent in their professionalism and friendliness.

  • MJ B.

First, let me say - we always are seated at the bar. The atmosphere is 4 star and waitrons are super professional. However, the food is really iffy. It's very rich so I feel as if the butter quotient is over the top - and seafood recently comes out on the cold side - so we wanted to send our orders back - but didn't and ended up just not eating it really. I think some orders sit too long in the kitchen OR they're just not cooked fully before they're served. The manager dropped by to say "sorry this has taken so long" but then when it did arrive it was cold and substandard. Not really acceptable for this price point so we left having enjoyed the cocktails but kind of felt the food was not up to par.

Nice relaxing atmosphere we ordered NY Strip and Salmon, Steak was cooked perfect, great quality. The Salmon was a little over season, the garlic over powered the flavor of the Salmon. I subbed Broccoli for the Mac and Cheese. We had to ask for bread with our Salad. Ok, the deserts were awesome, Carrot Cake was Huge, easy 4x4, the key Lime pie was also good. Overall Great quality food, good service, we we had no less than seven servers.

I think this place is alright. Nice decoration but it's hard for them to seat tables larger than six or move tables around because they are bolted down. The prices across the board are high. The menu is one big page with just a little bit of everything. A few salads, a couple sandwiches, a few entrees. The basic burger is $13, most other sandwiches are closer to $20. Entrees start in the mid 20s and some of the seafood items only have a "Q" next to them which I assume means mid 30s. On the latest occasion, I had pretty good service. The previous visit was bad service from an inattentive waiter. Always no bread, which is not a big deal to me but it was surprising to not receive anything at a restaurant of this stature. Also, last visit there was some confusion as someone in my party ordered a burger with mushrooms on it and received a large side of mushrooms instead. Shoestring fries are served with sandwiches and steaks. Salad seems alright, I've had a good Caesar salad there before but my try at an entree salad left me with a weird taste in my mouth. Overall, I have tried this place enough and it's prices seem about 25% too high for the quality of food. I don't think I'll return with so many other options in the area.

The macaroni and cheese is unreal, and it's actually a fairly reasonable price. I really think you'd find it difficult to find mac and cheese better anywhere else. The white cheeses they use are incredible, and the bread crumbs on top just make it all the better. The portion size is also just right -- much bigger, and I'd fall over dead. I got the fish sandwich, and that was the best fish sandwich I've ever had. The breading, the fish itself, the sauce that was on it ... all of it was very good. Fresh. Flawless. J. Alexander's is NOT cheap, but if you're okay with splurging a little bit for a dinner, this is the perfect place to do it. I'm not usually big on "fine dining" restaurants because I'm normally completely happy with a burger at a dive bar, but I'd come here again every now and then.

It's been a long long time since I've had the occasion to frequent J's, but as was usual the service was on point and the food on par too. I met a friend for a late lunch and ordered the Croque Madame. After the Iridescence Chef's Dinner I needed to tame my hunger for a full size version of one of my much favored sandwiches. Open faced on sourdough with a smear of either bechamel or mayo, with a nice portion of ultra quality smoked ham, draped with a thick slice of Gruyere and topped with an almost perfectly fried egg...it doesn't get too much more decadent for afternoon delight...well, except for afternoon delight with a side of pork belly. It came with a pile....actually more of a heap of shoestring fries and some loose greens so no need for the side salad. My friend ordered a bright tossed salad for starters and the rotisserie chicken, most of which she took home. The portion was freakin' enormous and the presentation was beautiful! When I want to be doted on and don't feel like dropping two bills, this is a pretty good spot to stop. It's always a pleasant experience to share with a good friend and the prices are on point with the service and the quality of food. J's always seem to be a winner.

This is probably my all-time favorite chain restaurant! Ordered the Crispy Fish Sandwich (it was Acadian Red Fish today). I ordered it grilled instead and added tomatoes and onion on the side to make it healthier! The white fish was grilled just perfectly. I also love the skinny fries with a side of BBQ sauce-I highly recommend this!

I LOVE the food here. It tastes good and the presentation is fantastic. I do feel when it comes to steaks, they are a bit pricey compared to other places and it doesnt taste any better. Dont get me wrong. I highly recommend coming here. If you are a salad fan, you have some fantastic choices. The portions are huge. My only advice, if you are going to drink alcohol, go somewhere else. IT's WAY overpriced.

This is just ok. It's not fine dining obviously, but the prices are. It's super loud in there and no ambience or dress code, people are in sweats and come in family flocks. What annoyed me most, the not so descriptive menu. I ordered the filet minion, and it comes with a baked potato as the side. Well, the potato had bacon all over it, and I don't eat bacon. It's not even in the description, that, that would come on it. I didn't even mention it to the server tho. I just put it aside and finished my meal, after she asked if I'd like the potato to go. I refused. It wasn't her fault, so why ruin her night?

The food here is excellent! Truly a cut above. Try the artichoke appetizer, it's amazing. Everything we've tried in the menu is incredibly fresh and cooked to perfection. And if you order a martini you get a side car with it. This is the ultimate date night restaurant. The only reason I have it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a little Expenssive. I wish we could afford to eat here all the time!!

Let me say that this is one f my favorite restaurants and a real treat for myself. Whenever my friends want to go out and chill, we go here. The atmosphere is always cool and the waiter service is usually on point, and if it's not they have no problem making it right. My fav dish here is the Rattlesnake pasta. Now, this has pasta has went through some changes that I'm not happy about. If you dine here on the regular than you know what I mean. The original way the pasta was served was with linguine noodles, Alfredo sauce, Cajun seasoning, tiny purple onions, cilantro, red, yellow, and green peppers, and Parmesan cheese. It was perfect. They portion was enough to always need a carry-out box! It was the pasta ever with the perfect seasoning tatse! Today in 2014, it has changed dramatically and now I'm questioning my favorite place. They cut the portion size down to about the half size of the pasta they serve at Red Lobster and it's still $17. They use fettuccine noodles instead of linguine noodles and provide less sauce. I'm so unhappy about it. To top if all off, when I do want their fuller portion that they use to serve, I have to order the kids size portion and that's $6. So I always spend $25 on pasta when I dine there :( Overall no one has as good of pasta as they do. It also tastes great the next day. I would advise ordering extra sauce. I always get it at no charge. I also get extra seasoning because sometimes they don't put enough to give it that real Cajun flavor. Also make sure they cook the noodles enough, mine weren't the last time I went.

Food was delicious, but what's up with no wi-fi?? Noticed that it is getting more "chain-like". Good food, but weak drinks! Do they really think we don't notice??

It was only my second time here and the last time I came was about 10 years ago. I had a great experience here even 10 years later! I brought my younger brother here because he never goes to nice restaurants and I wanted to treat him to something yummy. The ambience was good, very busy on a Friday night. We had done a call ahead but still ended up waiting for about 20 minutes. We got seated and it was tough to get our waitress to take our order because she was so busy. It took about 15 minutes to finally order. I ordered the baby back ribs with a side of micro fries and substituted the cole slaw for the mac and cheese (no extra cost!) My brother got the rattlesnake pasta after reading several people raving about this on Yelp and other sites. We were not disappointed at all! The pasta was so good that we saved half of it to eat the next day and we just shared my ribs which were plentiful, as well as the fries and mac n cheese. The food was very filling. It was about $53 after tip, since the ribs were $27 and the pasta was $17. I wish the price of the pasta was a little less because it seems relatively simple to make, just chicken, fettucine, and bell peppers in a southwestern cajun cream sauce. It was great though, and we enjoyed ourselves here! I will be coming here again next time and highly recommend this place.

Best service I have ever had at any restaurant. I had the filet mignon with NYO Mac and cheese. They had excellent Wolverine Amber lager micro brew beer that was fantastic. Everything was excellent. Highly recommended.

I don't get it. This restaurant is so overpriced. I had fish tacos and shared an order of calamari, water to drink. My bill with tip, $29! I swear the fish in the tacos was a total of 2oz. The tacos consisted of 2 flour tortillas and a giant pile of shredded cabbage with a side of rice with salsa and a few beans. Obviously I won't be back.

First things first- the service is great! We had five different waitresses bringing us food, beverages and asking us how we were enjoying our meal. That is quality service. The great thing about it was that they were really nice about everything too. You know what I'm saying like when a waiter/ess kinda shows they don't really want to be there. Well of they five that served on us- all five were great. Next the food, I had the prime rib and Alex's salad with a champagne vignegrette (sp?). The prime rib I woud say was ok (damn you House of Prime Rib in SF, you have ruined me!!!!). They come with "smashed" potatoes and au juis (sp?). Together the meal was delish but as individual components again alright. The salad was very good. Everything on it was fresh (plus cheese on top). The croutons were quite yummy. I actually wanted to ask for more but I had way too much food already. Great menu selection by the way, not overly complicated but still everything you expect with a couple of interesting things. Price was a bit on the high side but due to the service and the look of the place I could see why they would charge what they charge. Again, excellent service!

This is by far my favorite restaurant. I love the rattlesnake pasta and would eat it every day if it was a healthy viable option. It is not that far from my place so I try to get there as often as I can. I have tried a few different things here and it has all been great. The staff is outstanding and will cater to your every need. I would highly recommend this place to anyone! Also before you depart, get a piece of carrot cake. It will not disappoint!

Sole with lemon butter cream sauce and couscous was incredible. Was my first time having Sole...it's a lighter whitefish and I'd order it again. Couscous was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Also came with cole slaw, but I ordered the mac & cheese instead (that was my cheat food). I would highly recommend this dish. Chocolate cake with ice cream and chocolate syrup was so yummy! Air conditioning could have been turned up a bit; was a bit chilly in the restaurant. Service was great. Our waiter came by just often enough to check on us. Looking forward to dining there again!

I was here several years ago but I still remember the mashed potatoes, and I am not a mashed potato girl. YUM. The entree itself was amazing too--I think it was a filet. My memory fails me, but it was definitely a deliciously tender cut of red meat. I am mainly writing the review to point out that this place is in no way only "$$." At least $$$. Seriously. I hate the $-$$$$ reviews on yelp--they are hardly ever accurate!

My mom loves this place so on a recent visit home- I wanted to treat her to what she calls "a nice dinner out". J Alexanders, goes on my list of places to grab a decent lunch since there is one around the corner from where i work, but dinner? There are so many other choices, in my opinion. But I wanted to make her happy so off we went. I can probably recite the menu given the amount of times I've been here. Salmon is usually what I get but tonight- my mom was pushing the steak so I ordered the NY strip and she got the filet. Our steaks came up quickly and with the largest baked potato I have seen in a long time! Mom's was perfectly done, but mine? A little over done for a medium rare but close. Our server, Lacey alerted the manager that our steaks might be a little overcooked before we even had to say anything. So first up- the floor manager came over and asked if everything was okay and then Geoffrey, the kitchen manager came out to apologize and asked if I wanted my steak re cooked. I didn't but they ended up comping us dessert for our trouble. Nice- as I love their warm carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and it made all my troubles with my steak go away! Dinner for two with a couple of drinks ran about $90. I, for one, prefer local restaurants over chains, but J Alexanders is a chain that consistently delivers with good food and excellent service.

I have been a fan of J. Alexander's for years, however, mostly only ever going to their location in Orlando on Sand Lake Rd. Great tasting, quality food and outstanding service is what I always expected, and got at that location, so I was quite pleased, and relieved that this location lives up to their Orlando counterpart... Well done, J. Alexander's-Livonia!

I was looking for somewhere to take my father, and J.R. Alexander hit the spot. i normally avoid corporate chains, but give credit where it's due. They have a highly organized service system, and it shows in their execution. coffee drinks were well made. Our sandwiches were excellent, perfectly made with nice garnishes. The prices are a bit high, but reasonable considering the dark, sumptuous setting, elegant plating, excellent service and food. Worth going, especially if someone else is picking up the tab!

We love J. Alex's! It's our families favorite "special" place. The food is incredible, the service is always flawless. While the prices seem a tad in the higher end it's well worth it. Every bite of everything we've ever had, (save room for cake! Remarkable cakes!) tastes like more went into it than you would expect from any average restaurant. Combined with the cozy, classy atmosphere, J. A's is the perfect choice...

This restaurant was next door to the hotel I was staying at for a work trip and I was so glad that I decided to eat here! The overall ambiance of the restaurant was so nice (I wish my husband was there with me to enjoy it!) and my waitress was so nice. Service was fast and I ordered a Veggie burger for dinner. It was probably the BEST veggie burger that I have EVER had! I have eaten a lot of veggie burgers and this one was so good! I couldn't help myself but I ate almost all of it!

I had not been in nearly two years. My husband has never been. We decided to take the chance and give it a whirl. Things have changed somewhat. For the better. The staff here was way more on the ball and after a job change (and a very nice raise indeed) I am not feeling nearly as cheap as I once was. I decided to splurge and get the spendy ahi tuna. It took my husband forever to decide if we wanted apps and what he wanted to eat. I explained we were newbies to our poor waitress Chelsea, my husband actually was and I was practically J Alexander's re-virginized so it did take me a minute to pick too. Well she really went out of her way to make us feel welcomed after that. She brought us a basket of delicious croissants and was great about explaining everything. She also was so on top of drinks, I love that. We ended up skipping apps as we opted for spendier mains. I am not as cheap now but let's not get carried away or anything. Like I said I got the ahi tuna. Yep, that tuna was evilly delicious. Worth the price tag. Perfectly cooked to a delightful rare. The dash of creamy wasabi sauce on top and the dipping sauce alongside were delightful but did not overwhelm the fish. They served it with two huge slabs of beefsteak tomato which had a bit of sea salt and cracked pepper with a drizle of olive oil. Yum. The smashed potatoes I got with the dish too were just ok, I'd go for a veggie, mac and cheese or a loaded baked potato substitute instead if I got it again. James had the NY strip served with the tasty mac and cheese. Heads up that they slightly undercook the steaks here. His taste for steak is midway between medium rare and medium and his medium rare order looked perfect for my palate, coming out midway between rare and medium rare. No worries they will make sure you get it exactly the way you like. Ultimately he was very pleased. It is a ginormous slab of beef and so very tender. The mac and cheese was sinfully good. I think the secret of this place is go big or go home. The spendier food made me much happier than I had been prior to this. Chelsea was an amazingly great waitress the whole entire meal. This was a special occasion for us but we were playing it low key. She must have overheard us talking though because she brought us a slab of warm carrot cake to share for dessert. Mmmmmm heaven and holy huge. It was a lovely surprise and such an unexpected treat. For this visit everything was perfect and yep, now we will be regs. I am craving that tuna again something fierce.

I've been going to J's since my college days in Nashville,TN. Loved this place then a still my favorite place to eat now. The service is still A-!. I can't remember the last time I have ever had to ask for a refill. Glass look empty, here comes a new coke. everyone that take your order is friendly and knows the menu completely. The prime rib is what I order. I order mine medium and it's always perfectly cooked, with potatoes as the side. My experience at J's is always a great one.

Was at the AMC down the street and we wanted to get a bite after the movie. This was my first time at a J Alexanders's and I wasn't sure what to expect. The 3 people I was with had never been to one either. Was a little bit nicer than we expected but we decided to stay and give it a try. FYI, Entrees are in the $25- $35 range. We all ordered burgers... mine was called the Steakhouse Burger and it came with a huge pile of shoe string fries. The burger was so dang good!!! I have to say it is one of the best burgers I have ever had!! Cooked perfectly to medium, with grilled onions and hot melty cheese, fries were nice and warm and addictive. For $14 I ate half and was stuffed and took the rest home to devour later that night. Server was nice and friendly! I would definitely go back to try more of their menu!

Let me preface this with--if you're a cheapskate, keep your arse at home. now, the remaining food lovers, step into the gastricism. The decor of this place is just...visually seductive. it's chic, it's warm, it's just...done so right. One step in and I knew I was in for a good night. I could have done without the waitress explaining the obvious things, however, I honestly can't fault her nor the staff for proper training and attentiveness. Now the food. I ordered their signature prime rib with the side of horseradish sauce. The meat is succulent, and unlike some places this restaurant had taken care to ensure that the meat didn't dry out or crumble. The jus was well prepared and the beauty of it is that usually when you have jus warmed throughout the day, it tends to reduce to a point where the flavor is salty or just...not right. Here it was well balanced and just exceptionally complimentary to the meat. For dessert, I had the waitress surprise me (and I do give her points for taking the chance of actually making the decision for me) I thought for sure she would have brought out the chocolate or busted out hte belgian cheesecake, but no...after two or three waiters/waittresses passed with delightful trays of sweet sweet treats, finally came my Carrot cake which I will admit disappointed me a bit...I mean I actually like carrot cake...but really? carrot cake? that was your selection? She tells me that it was to be the best carrot cake i will ever have...and with that statement I had the arrogant smirk like "yea...right..." so out comes the fork and it goes straight into my mouth before the heat of the piece registers in my mouth--clearly i didn't get the memo that they heat the dessert. Man...I was not ready for that....after that moment of confusion passed...I mean I can't say it will be the best i've had--but i realized that I can't actually think of a time that i had carrot cake that blew me away...J alexander's carrot cake though not mind blowing DID have an interesting touch to it---and it was in fact well made. All in all the itis hit like a freight train and their cappuccino though decent was not reviving me... I must say...if this restaurant was near me...I would have a new go-to restaurant to satisfy my carniverous cravings and definitely any time we're in town--we'll be sure to swing by.

Always delicious at Js. Love my experience each time because the food is always consistently good and staff is always friendly! My ultimate favorite is the spinach dip app and artichoke (not always available in Livonia). I love the Thai salad. You MUST get the carrot cake. Yummmm

Very upscale environment with tasty dishes. The onion rings are enormous and enough for 4 or 5 people. The chicken fingers and shoe string french fries are great and I love the prime rib. The service staff is all over your dining experience. If your server is not ready to greet you, another will take your drink order. They all seem to work as a team.

I had been here once before, like 8 years ago, but this experience was almost like going for the first time because I did not remember the place at all. Anyway, I went here with friends for dinner, and everything was awesome. We utilized call ahead seating and were seated immediately upon arrival (even though they had told us on the phone we still may have to wait for a table to be cleared). We ordered a Mexican spinach dip for an app, which was AWESOME, and my husband and I had fish tacos for dinner, which were great as well. The sauce for the tacos was really spicy, which was fabulous. Ordered key lime pie for dessert, at two bites and took the rest home. It was such a large piece, it took me two more days to finish it off. The service was perfect, the ambience was nice but not stuffy, and it was an overall perfect meal. Only thing to improve on? Build one closer to where I live in Newport! :).
