I hit up Tom + Chee : Lansing for dinner tonight to try a spread of the menu. My tour included: 1) Armagoetta & Blue Cheese Chili 2) Tom Chee + Classic Tomato Soup (Dipper) 3) Hippy Chee 4) Barbara Blue (not pictured) Of the items I had the most impressive to me were the Blue Cheese Chili, Barbara Blue and the Armagoetta in that order. The Armagoetta is made with a meat & oats concoction called Goetta (native to my Cincinnati hometown) and was scrum-diddly-umptious. Pairing it with the Blue Cheese Chili was an excellent choice. Speaking of the chili... the Blue Cheese Chili was fantastic. It had a depth of flavor I haven't found in a restaurant chili in years. Bravo! Next was the Tom Chee paired with the Classic Tomato Soup as a dipper (oddly the same size as a side soup but at only $1 it was significantly less expensive. The sandwich itself was simple, tasty and filling. A grilled cheese on sourdough with diced tomatoes, cheddar, mozzarella and some garlic seasoning. A fantastic take on the childhood staple. The tomato soup tastes fresh, not canned or jarred, and I'm not sure how Tom + Chee does that given that they're a franchise now. The Hippy Chee was very tasty. A well balanced grilled cheese with a savory palate of hummus, cucumber, mixed greens, tomato and cheddar cheese on wheat bread. Another delicious take on the classic. Finally... there's the Barbara Blue. I'd been nervous about trying a grilled cheese donut. My trepidation combining from a combination of "'Merica" and just an odd sounding combo of over-sweet and savory. From the time I saw her on the plate I was stupid excited. So much so, I forgot to take a picture. And anyone who dined with me will tell you that sounds absurd. The Barbara Blue is named for one of the Sharks who funded Tom + Chee on the TV show "Shark Tank". And it's a good one. Blueberry compote paired with Brie, Ham and a grilled glazed donut. I was a bit surprised at how messy it was, with the compose drizzling down my hand even before my first bite... but the blue tint now on my hands is totally worth it. The Barbara Blue is a homerun of delicious and a great first bite for anyone nervous about a grilled cheese donut!

The concept of this restaurant is great! Who doesn't like fancy grilled cheese sandwiches?! I got the crunchy garlic chicken sandwich, creamy tomato basil soup and strawberry lemonade donut sandwich. Everything was delicious!! The soup complimented the sandwich deliciously and the dessert was the perfect finish (a little disappointed at how small it was though :/). On top of the amazing food, the staff was super friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming back to try more items on the menu (specifically the grilled cheese donut).

I recommend their original Tom+chee but I think it'd be good to try making your own grilled cheese. Their grilled cheese donut blends are the BOMB. Everything is pretty fresh but cooking time seems a bit long. Donut faves MUST TRY: 1. Fat Elvis 2. The King. 3. Strawberry Lemonade 4. S'mores

The staff was so confused as to what was going on. Had a long wait due to them messing up previous orders and then trying to figure everything out. Friends ordered the original Tom + chee and the cheese was not melted at all. One friend sent it back asking for it to be melted better, and they failed. The cheese was still not melted. The server just said "sorry" and ran away.

I've been to a similar grilled cheese themed restaurant in the Bay Area called The Melt, which was overpriced and had the most boring sandwiches that were crushed flat by their panini press. This... is MUCH better! The sandwiches are much more interesting, the bread doesn't have the fluffiness squished out of it, and the soup is pretty good. They also have a build-your-own grilled cheese option if you're feeling particularly creative. I also admit that I got The King donut sandwich... which was shamefully good and rich. Definitely splitting that one with the hubby, but I'm definitely coming back!

Decent lunch spot, built my own grilled cheese and had it with a creamy tomato soup to go. The sandwich was nice and hot and well melted but was very dense and hard to eat because the toast on the overly buttered bread grew really sharp and crunchy, the soup was pretty standard, nice and acidic but was a bit too sour for my taste. The take out box was really cute and well packaged but I was expecting a bit better on food quality. Everything felt heavy after I was done eating and I was craving soda since water didn't seem to satiate me at all. The serving size was also standard. What you would expect for what you paid for. A cute store but grilled cheese is probably not my thing.

i'm a big shark tank fan and had to check it out for myself. this is a great lunch spot! they have many variations on the classic grilled cheese. i love to dunk my grilled cheese in tomato soup so it's nice to see they have small dunking-sized soups. the mac and cheese is a steal- large portion of very cheesy mac and cheese. can't wait to work my way through their menu...especially the grilled cheese donuts

I've been wanting to try one of these since I first saw it on Shark Tank. Just kind of underwhelming in all respects. The ordering and service seemed out of sorts. Very friendly but just kind of jumbled in delivery and execution. My son liked his grilled cheese with ham and I liked the gazpacho I had. I also appreciated the option of a small "dunking" size soup for a buck. However, the BLT sandwich I had was pretty bland, and a little too "bready". The salad we ordered was very small and the ranch dressing was solid -not sure if this was because it might be yogurt-based or if was just pulled from a freezer- either way you shouldn't have to spread your salad dressing. Perhaps something else on the menu would have been a better choice, but I don't think I will be going out of my way to come back either.

I'd heard about Tom+Chee on various food blogs and had wanted to head down to Cincinatti to check it out so I was happy to find out that there was one in Lansing on my recent business trip. This joint seems like a great lunch spot option to have in the rotation: a diverse menu, quick service, and flavorful food. Stopping in for my first time I found it hard to decide what I wanted to try, before settling on a Turkey and Gouda option. All the customizations available are nice as well and I'm sure spice things up after going many times. After just waiting maybe 3-4 minutes at a table, my sandwich along with a delicious creamy tomato basil soup arrived. Both were very flavorful and proportioned well for a smaller lunch option. Overall, I wish there was a location by me and will definitely be back wherever I find one next.

Cool sandwich shop. I saw it on Shark Tank a little while back. Looks like they're blowing up. This shop is on sandwich row with like 5 sandwich shops within a block. The menu is pretty big and they stretch the term grilled cheese to basically mean any sort of grilled sandwich. I got the flying pig or something. It was really tasty. Fresh house cooked meat brings great flavor. I told the order taker to give me a cup of her favorite of the 3 tomato soups. She gave me the chunky one. It was flavorful and fresh, but a little strange having such big chunks of tomatoes. I would probably try one of the other ones next time. I also ordered a donut sandwich with blueberry compote and brie or Gruyere cheese. It was ok...but I'm still not sold on the whole using glazed donut as a bun thing. The service was good, but a little slow. 12 minutes to get my food after ordering. They were a little busy, but nothing crazy. I actually expected busier for a Monday at 1PM... it was also St Paddys day. Over all... reasonably priced, tasty fare with Lots of homemade flavor. It's a long way from home... but when they open one closer, I'll hit it up!

Food choice was excellent and simple at the same time. The tomato soup was really good but the sandwich was on the greasy side. Easy on the butter next time! Staff was friendly. I will most definitely come here again.

I love Shark Tank and I love Barbara. I wanted to love this place but I was truly disappointed. Greasy and not so special. Go to the City Market and buy some great cheese then make your own. I would give it two stars but it wasn't awful and would I settle on it if I was craving a quick fix? Probably. That said - I never bothered.

Got the grilled Mac and cheese with creamy tomato basil soup. the sandwich was awesome, if a little too greasy. the sourdough was perfect for the Mac and cheese and dunking it in the creamy soup was unbelievable. definitely going to come back for their huge selection oh and the grilled cheese donut!

Stopped in for a quick bite during orientation week at the local community college. The menu board is a little hard to follow at first, but once you catch on, it was easy. Our party ordered an original Tom and Chee (very good), a pesto turkey (also very good), a grilled Mac and cheese (too dry and not very flavorful), and a Green Goat salad (excellent). It was too hot for soup and we were too full to try the dessert donut grills. Will likely stop again and just try a donut in the future... and this would be a great spot for some hot soup during those cold, Michigan winter months!

I am in LOVE with "The King" sandwich. Of course, everything else I've tried is wonderful, too. I did find that can be difficult for them to keep up with lunch rush. They were very helpful in fixing what was forgotten from our order & even comped us part of our meal & threw in some free chips to make sure we left happy.

Great addition to downtown Lansing. I had the BLT-Chee and it was very good. Bread was grilled perfectly, cheese melted well and an appropriate amount. I think using a thicker and higher quality bacon would make it perfect!

Such a cool concept for a restaurant. It's a cute little sandwich shop from the inside. The serving size, wait time, and prices were all pretty satisfying. I had the grilled mac and chee, which is basically a grilled cheese with mac and cheese inside of it. It was absolutely delicious! I definitely would recommend this as a good lunch spot. And for the more adventurous eaters, no worries - they had a large variety of sandwiches, soups, and salads available! (Even a build your own sandwich offer) After seeing the menu, I definitely need to go back and try some of their more creative options, especially the grilled cheese donuts.

I really like some of the sandwiches at this place. The Dirty Bird and the Hippie Che are some really solid choices. The glazed doughnut sandwiches are a great desert option to share, The Elvis is my personal favorite. I'm not a huge fan of their soups. There isn't anything that makes me say wow about any of them. The specialty soup will sometimes surprise me, but the three different types of tomato soup aren't anything to write home about. I'd like to give them more stars, but they only really get the sandwiches right. If you're going to specialize in two things, you've got to get them both right.

Stopped in around 6 on a Saturday evening. Surprisingly busy with lots of MSU students making the trip downtown. Service is counter-style -- order at the counter, get a number, sit down, and they bring the food to you. Sandwiches are made fresh and it looks like they do a steady phone-in and carryout business, so be prepared to wait a few minutes for your meal. I tried the Flying Pig sandwich and it was quite good. My wife enjoyed the basic Tom + Chee sandwich and we both had the chunky tomato soup. There were other creative sandwiches on the menu as well. All in all, it was quite good and we will definitely be back. I can only assume that there will be another location opening in East Lansing soon! In the meantime, a note to MSU students venturing off campus: leggings are not pants!

I absolutely love the concept of a grilled cheese and tomato soup restaurant. I got the Tom & Chee and I wasn't disappointed, but I also wasn't blown away. I mean, it's grilled cheese. It's yummy, but it's nothing phenomenal. Also the restaurant is really cold because there's nothing blocking the door.

  • Whitney C.

Love the idea. Not so much the execution. The Grilled Mac and cheese was ok- a little too greasy on the bread. The grilled turkey and pesto was the better choice, better flavor. Best food was the S'mores grilled cheese donut. Highly recommend that for dessert.

  • N R.

The donut grilled cheese was good, but not nearly enough food. Between me and my family, we tried 3 different sandwiches and 2 different soups. They were good, but nothing we'd go to regularly or go out of our way for.

Friggin good grilled cheese, nice clean place looks like it'd be way more expensive than it is! The new assistant manager did not know the menu well but it was her first day. Awesome suggestions from other staff.

I love grilled cheese and tomato soup and love that Tom + Chee offers a gluten free option. It can be a little pricey for a grilled cheese, but is worth it. You may have to wait about ten minutes as well. One of the not as young female cashiers was less than friendly. She acted like my gluten free sandwich was an inconvenience to her and informed me she was short staffed so I'd have to wait extra long. Beyond that, the employees have been great every time I've visited the establishment. I hope it stays in the area and the wait time goes down.

Tom + Chee is a rather novel take on a classic American meal. I mean who doesn't love grilled cheese and tomato soup? As the name indicates, the basis of the menu is tomato soup and grilled cheese; however, this restaurant does a lot with those two menu options. With a ridiculously large number of sandwiches that go beyond the basic grilled cheese - as well as a create you own option - and a variety of tomato soups and chili's, the menu can appease almost everyone. Additionally, and ever importantly, the customer service was really great and the restaurant was very clean. I will definitely be returning.

Mediocre grilled cheese. Tastes like something you can easily make at home, I was expecting better bread but it tastes just like store bought bread. Tomato soup was okay

  • Michael A.

I waited far too long and paid far too much for such bland food. I came for my lunch hour, and it was very busy. It took them a few minutes shy of a half hour to bring my food. I ordered the turkey bacon grilled cheese. The turkey was very dry and the cheese was barely melted. The sandwich, small in size, was $6.49.

Great grilled sandwiches, huge menu, the soup was fine. Not great, certainly not bad. I think it's a little expensive, if you add a drink and tip, you can top $10 easy for lunch. During the weekday lunch hour it is very busy. I sat in a sunny window and didn't mind the crowed because my Mushroom/Swiss/Onion grilled cheese on rye was delicious. I will definitely go back again.

Had a soursough, Swiss, cheddar, and ham sandwich. Was very good. The soup is good not great...a little too much hype from people maybe. Liked it would try it again.

Ordered the BLT Chee and cup of classic tomato soup. The sandwich was excellent and there were several others I'd like to try. The soup was good, but for a classic tomato soup, I'm not sure how much better it could be. The wait was slightly longer than I expected, but overall good experience and great value for your money.

I first visited Tom and Chee in Ohio and was so excited when they opened one up near my parents. (I live in Virginia) So this Lansing location will be a spot I will go to when I visit family! I had a grilled donut and its AMAZING. A little over priced for something that doesn't fill you up. I also had a couple bites of my mom's Hippy Sandwich it had hummus and tomato and cucumber etc. on it. YUM!! The restaurant is SMALL wish there was more seating. They had a line out the door for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. Service was fast despite how busy there were.

Definitely a great place, and a very interesting if simple concept. This is classic comfort food, delivered by a friendly staff. It's vegetarian friendly to boot!

Love the idea. Not so much the execution. The Grilled Mac and cheese was ok- a little too greasy on the bread. The grilled turkey and pesto was the better choice, better flavor. Best food was the S'mores grilled cheese donut. Highly recommend that for dessert.

Fantastic Lunch! Great sandwich and tomato soup! I love how inexpensive the prices were at this spot.

Mediocre grilled cheese. Tastes like something you can easily make at home, I was expecting better bread but it tastes just like store bought bread. Tomato soup was okay

The normal sandwiches are good, but the donut sandwiches are simply amazing.
