Stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday morning recently and was very pleased with the service. The place was packed, but we were taken to a table right away and our server was so quick in waiting on us that we had to send her away for a few minutes while we perused their huge menu. They have a wonderful selection of just about any basic breakfast food you can think of--pancakes (obviously), omelettes, waffles, biscuits & gravy, etc. They serve it all with various toppings and in various flavors. Our server came back lickity split and, once we'd ordered, our generous (and delicious) portions of food were delivered to us in a very reasonable amount of time. We did have to wait for awhile in a crowded line to pay our bill, but we were pleasantly distracted by a display case full of artistically arranged fruit that created pictures of beaches and monkey heads. All in all a good experience!

Solid breakfast place. Fast service. Clean restaurant. I ordered the country fried steak. Breading was well flavored and fried hard. Sausage gravy was perfect. Eggs were prepared a proper over medium. I didn't like the pancakes. Not fluffy, very dry.

5 egg omelette is big enough to put a step ladder up to. The pancakes are worth a drive. They are packed with lots of flavor and slightly sweetened. Coffee and water never had a chance to go half full. Great service, speedy service. Kalamazoo is lucky to have this one.

Stopped for breakfast after my hubby heard about it. Everything was good. All the portions were large, omelets are 5 eggs. Big is not always good. I would have loved a 2 egg omelet. You are paying for the large portions. Will probably not be back. $18 for breakfast for two, 1 egg bacon hash browns and toast and a chorizo scramble.

My friends, Sunday regulars here, took me for breakfast while I was visiting. While the restaurant is large, they were seriously busy and had a bit of a wait time. If you have a large group you would definitely want to call ahead. Good place for breakfast/brunch. The menu is large, the portions are a good size and inexpensive. Breakfast is the standard fare, basic items, nothing fancy. There is a Greek influence, but this is not a Greek restaurant (it reminds me of a better version of a Coney if you are familiar with the Detroit area eateries). They said that owner is often there making sure everything is running smoothly. While busy, the service remained good and the food came out fairly quickly. If you are looking for a gourmet breakfast, this is not the place. If you want the basic, very filling breakfast then you are good to go.

The manager was so unsanitary when we went there soon after they opened, I can't even remember the food. He was sick with some sort of virus/head cold and was blowing his nose repeatedly with a handkerchief without washing his hands while he was handling people's food and cashing them out.

Don't expect to be wooed here, their goal is to fill you up to your eyeballs with yummy breakfast noms and then roll you out the door. Your Greek mother-in-law would be proud. Every time I come to Sophia's I leave happy and SO full! They're portions are very generous! Almost too many delicious options for breakfast and brunch. Not as greasy as most breakfast spots. It's easy to make healthy choices here too, but you probably won't want to after looking through the menu. The restaurant itself is actually huge. Kind of feels like it used to be a Big Boy maybe? Anyway, lots of seating for small and large groups! Prices are very reasonable! Belgian waffles are fluffy and fabulous.

Well managed, good service, clean and well prepared food. However, if your going to have "House of Pancakes" in the title of your business, then your hotcakes should be something special. Upgrade the batter and syrup quality from your supplier. Sophia's pancakes once you butter, syrup them and cut a typical wedge with your knife and stick a fork in it they fall apart. Too dry! More importantly the syrup has a flavor but I'm not sure what it is... Licorice? If it's supposed to be maple, not even close. As a suggestion, go to Meijers and pick up Krusteaz brand buttermilk pancake mix and a bottle of Meijers brand pancake syrup butter flavored (cheap) and do a taste test. On the plus side, the whipped real butter is a rare and appreciated touch.

Worth the wait. This is the place to be before noon on any given Saturday or Sunday. The menu is so extensive that everyone in your party will be able to eat. The service was outstanding. The waitress suggested a way to work the menu so that I could maximize my number of foods for a lower price (I had such a difficult time deciding between breakfast and lunch that I needed both). I highly recommend this joint before you hit the breweries.

So if you're a breakfast fan and enjoy a stack of pancakes as big as a house, then this is your place to come. I can't say as I've ever left hungry from Sophia's and the kids really seem to enjoy the spread they put on. I'm not certain that the omelet is the best that I have had, but it is still pretty tasty. Sophia's used to be a Big Boy years ago and not much has really changed decor-wise. Also, don't plan on visiting them for dinner, because you'd be highly upset to find that they aren't open then :( All-in-all, pretty good breakfast fare and a not too expensive. Spend a nice Sunday morning with the family here.

I'm going to account for the last time I went with my two girlfriends. We decided to get up a little earlier than normal to head out for breakfast right before work. We got there at 8:30ish and it really wasn't that bad. Decently busy but seated right away. I absolutely love omelettes and whenever I'm eating breakfast that's my go to. Usually they are humungous and since eating here previously, this place is no different. I thought that was what I was going to get but the waitress, whom was great, threw out the specials One of which was the hash browns and a egg bacon croissant breakfast sandwich. I decided to go outside my comfort zone this time. Although great in theory, I really didn't enjoy it how I love my omelettes. That was my preference. I've enjoyed my experiences there though. I would still return. You will be full when you leave.

Just left and I am so crazy full! Serving sizes are HUGE and delicious! Even though the place Was super busy because it was a Sunday morning it was quick getting a seat and getting our food after we ordered. Our server was very busy but still super attentive. A great place to visit if you are in town!

The menu is extensive with lots of really great options. I got a vegetarian egg white omelette with added feta. It was HUGE and I have a huge appetite. It came with hash browns (which I subbed out for fruit--huge slices of melon, pineapple, grapefruit and orange, all fresh), and pancakes/grits/or toast. I got all of this for about 12 dollars (including tax and tip) because of the up charge on the egg whites and feta. Totally worth it. I got a meal and a snack out of it! Also the service was great. My water never went empty and my friends who did get coffee always had a hot cup. Strong recommendation for a cheap and yummy dining experience!

Excellent breakfast place! Huge portions, and everything is fresh-baked from scratch. The waitress who took care of us was really, really friendly, and the whole staff was hospitable and accommodating when we had to wait an hour for our ride to pick us up. I had the omelette and loved it, especially the stuffed french-toast with strawberry glaze that came as a side, and my friend had the simple 2-egg breakfast, and loved the blueberry-topped pancakes that came with. Their pancakes are unique -- all from scratch, no buttermilk, and are lighter and airier than most pancakes.

Good place for a late breakfast. Service is fast and friendly, Brenda was attentive and never let my coffee cup go empty. Large and airy dining room with a great view of the fall colors out the front windows. The food was well prepared and the portions are large. I ordered the two egg breakfast and asked for a third egg, and I was informed that the two egg actually came with four. Sunny side eggs are usually a crapshoot, but these were cooked perfectly. I did something I don't normally do and ordered the biscuits and gravy. Excellent choice, a wonderful sausage gravy like my mom used to make. A good meal at a good price and the coffee was excellent!

Another typical breakfast place. Large portions served by friendly, experienced servers. Immediate seating (Friday morning) and speedy checkout, which are very important for breakfast joints when people want to get on with their day. I won't be dreaming about Sophia's, but I would definitely recommend it.

If you are in Kalamazoo - you NEED to go here for breakfast. the sign says voted #1 breakfast - it is true. We came in yesterday - no reservation & 12 in our party. We were seated within 15 mins. Even though we needed like 5 separate checks - the waitress did not blink - she was super nice and oh so efficient. food was wonderful - some of us had the omelets - some had skillets, crepes and club sandwiches. There were no disappointments.

I was in Kalamazoo for work on Friday, 2/27/15, and since I had a little time to spare before my flight, I decided to have breakfast at Sophia's at the stadium drive location. I selected this restaurant due to the good reviews it received on here and another site, and I was looking forward to a great meal. when I arrived, I was immediately seated at a table and was given a menu. After being seated for a while, I observed that other patrons in my surrounding area were being greeted, advised of the specials of the day and waited on by Jennifer, a waitress at the restaurant. However, I hadn't been offered water, drinks or given the same courtesy as other customers in my area. After about 15 minutes of waiting, I advised Jennifer ( the only waitress who was waiting tables in my area) that I was ready to place my order. very dryly and without eye contact, she asked "what do you want?" I decided not to air my grievances with Jennifer and waited to speak with a manager after my meal. After bringing me the food I ordered, Jennifer did not follow-up with me besides leaving the bill on my table. Again, I observed that she would follow-up with other customers before ordering as well as during their meal. Regarding the food-I ordered breakfast and the meal was overpriced and mediocre, at best. Only positive was that the food was delivered to your table shortly after ordering. So I spoke with the manager about my experience with Jennifer and he was apologetic, but did not offer anything beyond that. I informed him that my goal with bringing this to his attention was to make sure someone talks to her about this and in the future, she will think twice before ignoring, being rude and providing poor service to someone of color as I am pretty sure this was not her first time doing this. In summary, the service was horrible, the food wasn't that good and wasn't worth the money. I would recommend others to pick another place.

Where do I begin? The food came out fast but the waitress asked if we wanted boxes and why we didn't like our food within 5 minutes of it arriving. We were still eating so that was weird. My sister let her know when she came back that her eggs weren't set (she ordered over easy) but was willing to pay for them. After a lengthy conversation she had with her manager/ the owner, they said they'd take them off the bill but she was instructed to tell us how to properly order eggs. Then the manager/ owner came by to also tell us how to properly order. First and last time ever going there. If you go, make sure you're in a hurry to leave and order properly by their standards.

I've only been one time, but I was left very, very impressed by my first visit. My meal was simple: scrambled eggs, pancakes and grits. The eggs were awesomely fluffy in a way that was surprising even though I had already read that in other yelpers' reviews. WOW. I know scrambled eggs aren't typically something one highlights in a breakfast but there it is. The pancakes were quite good and the grits were solid. The price was reasonable. While others have panned the atmosphere at the recently renovated Colonial Kitchen down Drake, sophia's did not detract from the experience and actually featured a lot of natural light courtesy the old Big Boy windows. Another really notable feature of my meal was the service. My server was incredibly attentive, diligent with water and coffee refills and with smiles. I felt very at home here despite it being my first time. I hope everyone on staff at Sophia's is as kind. For the foreseeable future, this will likely be my go-to place in Kalamazoo/Portage for breakfast.

This is a standard breakfast place. What sets it apart from others, though, are the huge portions, the large dining room with plenty of room for plenty of people, and the extensive menu. It seems clean, the staff is friendly, and the good comes out quickly. I wish there were more healthy options, though...the kids love to come here because of the Mickey Mouse pancakes, but I have a hard time finding something for me.

Coney style restaurant. Huge crowds, huge plates of food but a little pricier than a coney. The food was great - hot, fresh, well made. The restaurant handled the crowd very well. The waitress was too busy to be attentive. I would have preferred to get smaller portions for smaller prices and add on if wanting more food, but I guess that is just not how this place operates. Tips for visiting - they are always busy but a short wait and you will be seated. Order just one scrambled egg, the portion looks like it is two. Pancake stacks can be shared, and the small OJ is very small. Four of us had normal breakfast meals and the bill was over $10 each. We will find somewhere else that is not too busy and probably cheaper for breakfast next time, but Sophia's is going something right to be so busy all the time.

We came here as a group of 6 on a Friday morning. We were seated immediately and had a nice round table in a quiet corner of the restaurant. We all enjoyed how large the menu is and how there were options for any and every desire. I ordered the greek omelet and added turkey sausage, with pancakes and a side of fruit. When all of our food came out, our table was so full of plates that we could barely move anything. My omelet was easily the height of my fork and took up the entire plate. I forced my way through half of it and then just ate the remaining artichoke hearts in the centre. It was ridiculously massive, though also very delicious. The fruit was very fresh and the pancakes were super delicious! Service was very prompt and helpful and despite our 8000 changes to our orders, everything came out perfectly! I agree with other orders that portion size could definitely be cut in at least half and everyone would still leave full. My omelet and a coffee (with tip) came to $17. A smidge pricey for breakfast, though it did hold us through until dinner. I would definitely return, though would either order a la carte, or force someone to share with me!

I love this place for breakfast! The owner is always there and helps to get people seated quickly. The service is always friendly and the food comes fast. The portions are huge, which was awesome when I was pregnant. The food is consistantly delicious and priced reasonably. Definately worth checking out for breakfast.

I made a yelp account just to review this place. I got the gyro platter and it was huge, delicious, came with soup AND french fries and a mountain of feta. My boyfriend got a standard breakfast, which looked really good. The server was a sweetheart, attentive and chatty but not annoying. The prices are reasonable, especially considering how much food you get. Everything was great until the end of our visit. We went and paid the big Greek guy at the counter, who had been standing there for a while. Left a fat tip (30%) because both of us work in restaurants and we came in a little before closing time, starving, and were supremely satisfied. We leave, get in the car, and get chased down by a tall, youngish, grouchy man who had been seating customers throughout our visit and very clearly hating his life. Anyway, he started accusing us of dining and ditching. NO, we would never EVER do that. He says we didn't pay, I said uh, yeah we did. He asked who we paid, I said the big Greek guy at the counter! He was incredibly rude and judgmental towards us. Didn't even apologize. I hope he finds out that, not only did we pay, we treated our server very well and enjoyed our experience (except for this jerk's presence). I hope he gets fired.

Sophia's replaced the Big Boy's that used to be here. A vast improvement, if you ask me. This is classic diner fare and Sophia's excels at it. Giant portions, diverse menu, and cheap. Don't expect high-end, fru-fru food here. You're going to get simple stuff. And you're going to get a lot of it. When you order eggs, they double your order (for example, ordering 2 eggs means you'll get 4 eggs). Their pancakes are quite good. They have a unique sweet taste I can't quite put my finger on. Just beware, this place is often quite crowded. And when it's packed, you can expect a zoo-like atmosphere with slow service. Don't even think about competing with the after-Sunday-church and post-Saturday college party crowds. It's not worth it. Sophia's is a solid classic breakfast diner experience. Too bad about their limited hours. I love getting breakfast at odd hours of the day.

Most of the breakfast I've had in Kalamazoo has been garbage, but this place is actually pretty legit. The omelet was mad tasty, and there was a ton of options for shit to put in the omelet. Artichokes? Sign me up. Like, six different cheeses? Word. The pancakes were tasty. A server was around to keep the coffee hot like every three minutes. I would highly recommend this place to anybody who likes breakfast that isn't fucking horrendous in Kalamazoo.

Disclaimer: I am an omelette whore. This is seriously a great omelette. 5 eggs and really fresh ingredients. Supper fluffy (I imagine they add something to the mix). Was in town for a couple days and went back for the omelettes. The pancakes were really good too, since they came on the side, but i can't say i really had much room for them given the size of my omelettes. Servers were very friendly as well. Very nice atmosphere. Not only would go back, but would consider moving into.

Nothing to write home about. Had the Gyros meat salad. The meat was greasy, obviously pre-sliced off the rotisserie (if even that) and then FRIED to warm it up. Bleh.

We had breakfast here on a wednesday morning, and I was surprised at how busy they were. The food came out quickly. Our server, Denise was great. We really enjoyed her hospitality and kindness! She never let our coffee cups get empty (this is crucial to a good breakfast dining experience for myself). Our bill was a little on the pricey side, but well worth it because there was plenty of food leftover. The gentleman at the table next to us order the fruit platter which was pretty impressive... I will definitely be ordering that next time!

I got the stuffed french toast and it was incredible. I highly recommend it. Also my server was wonderful. We got our food quickly, and it was delicious.
I remember when this place was Elias's and it's really the same. Food is bla, huge portions, cheap ingredients, and so so service. Would be ideal if I was hammered and didn't care what was going into my body. Stick with Maggies for good breakie.

Five of us went to Sophia's for a lunch -- it closes at 4, so lunch is the only alternative to breakfast. Two of the five had dragged us there because of the ample and tasty breakfasts they had the previous day, so we had expectations. Lunch was ample too -- I had the gyros salad -- but quality was only so-so. My feeling is that they are trying to be a little Greek and a little American and a little Mexican but not with a clear message -- So it was hit and miss. Two of the five enjoyed the experience; two of the five disliked it and the fifth was somewhere in the middle. I would go there again, but only for breakfast.

Great breakfast. Great value. Pancakes were the best and eggs cooked right. Wait staff was very nice and on top of their game. We will be back again and again. Don't forget an order of 1 egg gets you 2 eggs on your plate and an order of 2 eggs gets your 4 eggs. No joke.

I was surprised at how awesome this place was. I had one of the best omelets I've ever sunk my teeth into. It was a Hawaiian omelet. The eggs were light and fluffy and the fruit beyond fresh. I can't wait to go back. The place was extremely crowded but the service didn't suffer at all. I give them mad props for always keeping my coffee and water filled, without me even having to ask. It was a great experience and I can't wait to go back.

Had a very big menu selection, service was fast and food was really good. Will have to try more next time since moving to the area soon.

Another typical breakfast place. Large portions served by friendly, experienced servers. Immediate seating (Friday morning) and speedy checkout, which are very important for breakfast joints when people want to get on with their day. I won't be dreaming about Sophia's, but I would definitely recommend it.

Wow, go hungry, lots of food.

Excellent, All meals can feed the largest appetite. Second time to Sophia's and was well well loved. Will return every time I am in Kalamazoo.

My boyfriend and I do Sunday brunch here quite often. On a college budget, you get a huge portion size and extremely fast service. We love Sophia's! it's always busy which should tell you something.

This place is awesome, one of the best breakfast places in Kalamazoo. Service is always attentive and quick, the speed at which they bring you the food and quality of it are amazing. My daughter loves the biscuits and gravy (says they're even better than grandmas)

Country fried steak! Yum yum ...

I live off Oakland Drive in Kalamazoo and was happy to see that someone was bold enough to repurpose the Big Boy location on Stadium. However, after my recent breakfast here, I really can't tell you this is any better than Big Boy. This is the kind of place the restaurant critic in the Kalamazoo Gazette loves. Boring, provincial food, and lots of it for a cheap price. Other than that, you're not getting much. I ordered two eggs over easy, a pancake and coffee. I got four eggs, two pancakes and almost an entire plate of hash browns. Now, I guess I shouldn't complain about getting more than I paid for, but no one needs to eat four eggs for breakfast. No one. Unless you're farming for a living or running a marathon that day, don't think about it. Now, I know I can simply choose to not eat what I get, but even that was hard at Sophia's. Why? Because all of the food, and the coffee, tastes like it was made with the cheapest possible ingredients. The eggs had lots of grease, but no flavor. The pancakes tasted like they were made from a mix, and the potatoes were just not good. In addition, the coffee was the light brown variety that tastes like corn cobs with coffee flavor. And the maple-flavored corn syrup was an insult to all of the sugar maples across the road near Asylum Lake. All in all, if you're thinking of trying this place for breakfast, don't bother. You can do better in Kalamazoo -- think Crow's Nest, East Egg, Food Dance, or, if you're devoted to thrifty diner food, Main Street Café on East Michigan.

Excellent Breakfast/lunch dinning. Food is plentiful and delicious. Staff are helpful and efficient. Wide choices on menu. Good prices. No complaints from me!
(5)Anne G.
Great breakfast. Great value. Pancakes were the best and eggs cooked right. Wait staff was very nice and on top of their game. We will be back again and again. Don't forget an order of 1 egg gets you 2 eggs on your plate and an order of 2 eggs gets your 4 eggs. No joke.
(4)Christy W.
Great service today! We were seated right away, given coffee right away, our order was taken right away, and my coffee was never empty. The portions are huge. They use double yokes for their eggs. Our server was wonderful.
(4)Christopher J.
(4)Ashley M.
Great food, huge portions. Wonderful and friendly staff from the waitresses to the busers. The place was packed, but we were seated and served promptly. The restaurant seems to be run very efficiently. Will come again!

Great food. Good service. The owners were there, and were very friendly and appreciative of our business. Yummy Family Style food.

Much nicer inside than it might appear from the outside. Food was very good and very family friendly. Reminded me of a Baker's Square in terms of menu, quality, and pricing. Manager and server were very friendly even with the kids. We were pleased with our experience.
