Went last night for the first time, and it was pretty good! Very generous portions of food. Our waiter was super friendly and helped suggest things on the menu. It was quick and easy and casual. I will be going there again for sure.

One of the best Mexican restaurants in town. They always have great specials on the board as you walk in so be sure to check that out. The salsa and chips at the start are delish. I always get ranchero burrito, very good. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere is fine, more fun when restaurant is busy. Enjoy.

The most amazing Mexican food. In fact, my best friend (who is from Chicago) and I (I'm from Houston) agreed that it is the best Mexican food we have ever had, & we both have eaten at countless Mexican restaurants in our hometowns. My BF, BFF, and I went last night to try this place out for the first time. We walked in and were pleasantly surprised. It's a nice clean restaurant, of course Mexican themed, and there were already a handful of other groups of diners seated. Good sign. The hostess/cashier was friendly and gave great customer service. Our waiter gave good service, even though he was quite busy taking care of all the tables in there. Anyways, on to the important part - THE FOOD! They started us off with a basket of fried tortilla chips & salsa - which was delicious & a great start to a great meal. My BF & I tried the chicken & rice soup which was quite tasty! As far as entrees...I had a combination plate that included a HUGE beef & cheese filled chile relleno, a chicken enchilada (made w/ moist white meat), spanish rice & refried beans. My BF had an enchilada plate (I can't remember what it was called) which were filled with melted white cheese and topped with seasoned shredded pork and covered in salsa verde, with rice & refried beans. BFF had a combo plate w/ 2 chicken enchiladas & a chicken hard taco. WE ALL LOVED EVERYTHING WE HAD! Sorry to yell, but we seriously loved it, all of it. We all overstuffed ourselves b/c it was so good, and there were even left overs! (Their dinner servings are huge and are really enough to be split into two meals.) Still, we had to try the desserts. We ordered a Fried Ice Cream and a Flan. The fried ice cream didn't really seem battered and deep fried like we've had in other restaurants, but it was incredibly delicious nonetheless. It seems like they roll a gigantic ball of vanilla ice cream into finely crushed crunchy coating (crushed fried tortilla?/sopapilla? might have cinnamon/sugar in it too?) and seat it in a deep fried puffy sopapilla?/tortilla? shell bowl - topped w/ plenty of whipped cream & maraschino cherries -- SO GOOD & was plenty for the 3 of us to share. We couldn't even touch the flan at that point, we were severely overstuffed with all that goodness. Tried the flan today though & it has a great texture and is very creamy. All in all - Highly recommend this place!!!

One of the better Mexican restaurants here in Kalamazoo. The servers are wonderful, and are always around. They are also so friendly, which really adds to the experience. The first time we dined here, we ordered the house margaritas and the southwest chimichangas. The margaritas were huge, and the best tasting out of all of the Mexican restaurants. The chimichangas were great tasting, and not overly-greasy, which seems to be more the norm than the exception. Lastly, the chips and salsa you're served when you're seated at your table has a great smoky flavor, and has been deemed our favorite salsa out of any of the other Mexican restaurants that we've tried. The atmosphere is just like any other Mexican restaurant, very colorful and lots of decorations, but it's also very clean. The prices are very reasonable and we can't wait to go back.

Being from Los Angeles, we have lots of options for great mexican food. So I was pretty excited when my cousin said we were going out for dinner. Mexican food is one of my favorites. Well, we pull up and its on a strip mall next door to Sally's Beauty Supply. Ok, not a problem. I'm cool with hole in the wall spots. We walk in, yep, looks like a mexican restaurant. We sit down and order. Salsa was "ok". Guacamole was more puree'd. Not chunky avocado style. I ended up dumping the salsa in the guacamole as the guacamole didnt have any real flavor. I ordered the fajitas. Chicken, steak and chorizo. They smelled good. They were just kinda bland. I was expecting the steak to be charbroiled and well seasoned. It wasn't. My cousin had nachos. She seemed to enjoy them. Overall, I'll give them a 3. Would I go back? Probably not.

The Huevos rancheros is fantastic. Best Mexican salsa around. Arroz chicken delicious. Chicken very tender. Staff is very friendly. Was seated immediately with chips and salsa given immediately. Atmosphere pleasant with nice music.

Wow, where to begin.. I brought my friend from out of town with me to this restaurant last weekend because I've heard good things about it from my friends and I hadn't gone yet. When arriving, we walked in and were not greeted by the person who was taking money from a table leaving. I had to ask if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait. To which, she yelled at five waiters who were sitting at a table together talking. After we were shown our table, our waiter was friendly and prompt with taking our food and beverage orders. Our margaritas were huge and definitely a good value at $7.00. (They were on special.) We received our food soon after ordering, but the plate I was served was absolutely covered in refried beans and what I believe was queso. I ordered a cheese enchilada, a refried bean tostada, and a bean burrito because I'm vegetarian. The vegetarian meal items on the menu looked to be interesting because you could order combinations and get a little of everything which was very appealing. I was not impressed with the food at all. My tostada was mushy and covered in liquidy refried beans as well as my burrito. If you are interested in a liquidy bean and cheese plate with mushy tortillas thrown in, this is the sampler item for you. I was not at all impressed. I could not decipher the difference between each of the items on my plate because it was covered in bean and cheese liquid. For $8.50, I'll save my money and enjoy the free chips and salsa and drink the margarita if I ever get dragged back. I would love to say that I'd give this restaurant another try because I've worked in the industry and understand that sometimes food presentation is off, but this was really pretty unedible. The food portion was small, disgusting looking, and not very flavorful. For those who have suggested this being the "best authentic Mexican restaurant in town," I would recommend Juanita's in the Edison Neighborhood or Mi Pueblo on Gull Road. Sure, the atmosphere was fun with painted murals on the walls and Mexican music playing, but otherwise, I was not at all impressed (and I consider myself a Mexican Food junkie). I'm assuming those who have made the statement that this is a terrific authentic place have only been to this establishment in Kalamazoo because it has a terrific location. I will not be going back unless it is to enjoy a margarita.

Nice, little Mexican restaurant tucked away in a strip mall. The complimentary chips and salsa were very good. It had a little bite to it but I prefer spicy food so I was happy with that. I ordered the arracherra tacos and they were very good. They come with onions and cilantro. I substituted cheese for the onions. They go pretty heavy on the cilantro which makes it a little overpowering but if you like that flavor then you'll be happy. Next time I might ask for it on the side. The rice and beans that came with the tacos were fantastic! All in all a good authentic Mexican meal. I'd definitely come back.

Far and away my favorite Mexican food in Kalamazoo! I've never had anything here I haven't loved and I've been a regular for years. The drinks are good and strong, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. I very highly recommend La Pinata!

This is my wife and my go to place for Mexican food when we're on the west side of Kalamazoo. She usually starts the meal off with a frozen mango margarita and I get a Mexican beer or two. I'm happy to say they have Dos Equis on tap, which is no easy find in Kzoo. The Mexican food is the standard Americanized fair (burritos, enchiladas, etc.), but they also have some tasty staples that we've picked up when vacationing in Mexico (carnitas, tortilla soup). Overall, we love this place and frequent it at least once a month.

La Pinata is the best Mexican food in Kalamazoo, easily, and some of the best I've had in Michigan. I wandered in when it first opened back in 2004. The food was excellent then and it's gotten much better as they've refined the recipes and added more variety to the menu. I haven't lived in the area in a few years but I try to make it in whenever I get a chance. The menu reminds me of restaurants in Detroit's Mexicantown in that it's all standard Mexican fare but there's a wide selection of it. I would recommend the pork and the chorizo for meat. Both are flavorful and tender. The ground beef and chicken are nothing to write home about. The stewed beef is sort of like Mexican pot roast beef. It's good and a nice change of pace. They also serve a surprisingly good steak, smothered in freshly cooked peppers and onions. The guacamole is handmade and extremely delicious too. The service is absolutely great. Many of the servers have been working there since it opened. They know the menu and they know how to wait tables very well. The kitchen is also extremely fast - never have I waited more than 10 minutes for my food and usually it's more like 5-8. The prices are impossible to beat too - enormous entrees are all $7-10. On my last visit, three of us got stuff and had a couple beers each and got out for $35. Idiot Kalamazoo hippies who balk at the prices in ~50% of the Yelp reviews for area restaurants can shove it; for people who have left SW Michigan this place is an eye-popping value. Definitely one of my favorite Kalamazoo restaurants.

Not gourmet food or "authentic Mexican," but it's the only place in the area that makes halfway decent chili verde. Served on top of cheese enchiladas, the pork is tender, lean, and very, very flavorful. Service is prompt but can be a little surly..

We were one of their first customers years ago. I knew they couldn't stay in business with such a great menu and great prices. And now it's sad to report that they've crossed over to being just like any other restaurant out there. High prices with reduce portions and the quality is starting to slip. Hey la piñata, if your reading this, please try and remember your beginnings and take a step in the right direction before your just another vacant store front.

La Pinata is pretty good for Kalamazoo. I've had hit or miss service- but it seems to be getting better. It's certainly not the best Mexican food I've had- and El Jimador in Portage is much tastier, but in terms of proximity and quality, it hits the spot from time to time.

Friendly and professional service in a family run restaurant setting, finished off by a good sized bar area. Good chips & salsa with everything, large portion sizes, good food. Some of the flavors down spiced for local tastes, ask for the spicy versions.

Complimentary chips and salsa were very good. Salsa was hot enough to notice but not over powering. Some of the prices are a bit high, but portions are big. I had a combination platter with a taco, burrito, and chulupa. Everything tasted good and was well put together. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars was the price of things relative to the competition.

Guacamole was good, but that was really the only thing that I was impressed with. While the serving sizes of the entrees are huge, they're not particularly good and taste like a lot of the ingredients are processed.

You know that feeling where you spent all semester at college eating dorm food... And you go home to your first home cooked meal and you felt like you died and went to heaven... Well I've been out of college for 5 years and I can attest that you will too have that feeling all over again when you come here... In fact this place is so good! That you will never go to another Mexican restaurant again because it will never compare! I think I might even start going to church again after this meal! I had both the beef and chicken chimichanga... And the flavors are outstanding! The margarita is outstanding! Better than mine and for a Belgian women... I make a pretty darn good one... Just sayin'... My waitress is my newly adopted aunt... And the atmosphere makes you feel like you're in a cozy Mexican village... Hands down... I high recommend coming here! But warning... It will ruin any other Mexican restaurant out there for you.

An excellent Mexican restaurant! Be prepared for a huge portion of food! My favorite deal is the pick two or pick three combination dinners! They have a huge menu including some American fare like cheeseburgers and fries. A great spot for groups and families. I highly recommend stopping by for great food, fast and friendly service.

Yuck. Meat tasted old and reheated. Cheese was Velveetaish. Not even close to authentic. Mexicans (in Mexico) take a lot of pride in the quality and taste of their food. Not the case here. I grew up eating Mexican street food, in Mexico, for years. Only El Gallo Blanco (Portage Road) and La Perla (Benton Harbor) are the real deal. The other places (Los Amigos, Mi Pueblo, etc) are good, just not authentic. You won't find burritos, tacos with lettuce and cheese or the saucy, cheesy dishes in Mexico.

My boyfriend and I come come here all the time. Great Mexican food and the prices aren't bad either. Not only are they quick with the service but they also have great margaritas the size of your head! I wish I could rate the food separately. The food is delicious! It's not the best I've ever had but definitely worth a repeat visit... normally... The first time or two that I've been to La Pinata I had very good experiences. This time not so much. What made things worse is that I had bragged to a friend of mine about how good my experience was at La Pinata, which of course made her want to try it out. So anyway, we get there and are seat as normal. After about 8 minutes our waitress finally showed up. She appeared distracted and kind of "all over the place" which was odd as it was less than half full. But I know how things can get so I blew it off. After another wait our drinks were brought out. We had already picked out entrees so we ordered. The wait for our meals seemed a bit long, which again was odd based on the size of the crowd. But whatever... The food arrives and the first thing we notice is that the order is wrong. My friend ordered the small chicken fajitas, which is around $13-15.00. What showed up was the LARGE La Pinata fajitas which has chicken, beef, shrimp, etc. and is like $19, enough food for two people easy! Now I know mistakes happen and normally it would be no big deal. A "good" waitress would either replace with the correct dish or modify the check. This one did neither. When the mistake was brought to her attention, she proceeded to tell us that's what we ordered, even though anyone with eyes could see that it was way too much food unless we were going to split it. So I explained to her what we actually ordered, she basically called me a liar. I asked for a menu so I could show her. Never arrived. By this time my friend who is totally non-confrontational just wants to eat and leave, so I let it go. I did explain to the manager, when we paid, the lack of tip and exactly why she didn't earn one. He attempted to apologize but I assured him i would not stop patronizing his establishment based on one bad experience. But I thought you guys should know in case you get the same waitress. Then we I looked at all of the other reviews, I see that mine was not an isolated occurrence. Hmm... So now I'm conflicted... I'll let you know if I go back...

After searching for a Mexican restaurant in kzoo, and reading mixed reviews I decided I had to try this place, I dined in at lunch with a friend. The server was just ok, didn't seem like he knew how to answer our questions, being first time diners. Their were a few other diners, we both ordered burritos with a side of queso sauce. My friend was served first, while I had to wait an additional almost 10 minutes for my food (they were near finished) The guacamole on my plate was oxidized and un appetizing..never have I been to a Mexican restaurant where they served bad guacamole. The free chips were out of a bag-not authentic, everything was just very bland. Needless to say we left un satisfied and will not be back.

Overall, we love this place and frequent it at least once a month.

Far and away my favorite Mexican food in Kalamazoo! I've never had anything here I haven't loved and I've been a regular for years. The drinks are good and strong, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. I very highly recommend La Pinata!

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Good Mexican food. Very casual. The mole (mol-ay) sauce is delicious. Stiff margaritas...
(3)Iain W.
Awful service, all the employees were sitting at a table talking for about 10 minutes before taking our order, we didn't receive our drinks after another 10 minutes so we left
(1)Sue S.
Not gourmet food or "authentic Mexican," but it's the only place in the area that makes halfway decent chili verde. Served on top of cheese enchiladas, the pork is tender, lean, and very, very flavorful. Service is prompt but can be a little surly..
(4)Keith U.
(3)Susan C.
La Pinata is pretty good for Kalamazoo. I've had hit or miss service- but it seems to be getting better. It's certainly not the best Mexican food I've had- and El Jimador in Portage is much tastier, but in terms of proximity and quality, it hits the spot from time to time.
(4)R D.
Friendly and professional service in a family run restaurant setting, finished off by a good sized bar area. Good chips & salsa with everything, large portion sizes, good food. Some of the flavors down spiced for local tastes, ask for the spicy versions.
(4)Travis K.
(4)Marcie K.
Guacamole was good, but that was really the only thing that I was impressed with. While the serving sizes of the entrees are huge, they're not particularly good and taste like a lot of the ingredients are processed.
(3)Christine J.
(5)Ashley S.
(5)Joe L.
(1)Christine B.
My boyfriend and I come come here all the time. Great Mexican food and the prices aren't bad either. Not only are they quick with the service but they also have great margaritas the size of your head! (That is if you have a massive head) I've been to quite a few Mexican restaurants in Kalamazoo but this one tops 'em folks!
(5)Adonis P.
(2)Kimberly J.

This is my favorite restaurant! The food is amazing and the service is great. It is never too crowded (Except for CInco de Mayo). I always get the Burrito Mexicano. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food go here. The menu is very large and even has "american" food for those who are not in the mood, although I have never tried that.

Far and away my favorite Mexican food in Kalamazoo! I've never had anything here I haven't loved and I've been a regular for years. The drinks are good and strong, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. I very highly recommend La Pinata!
