This place is amazing! On first glance, the unpretentious decor -- and price point -- would suggest a Mom-and-Pop style diner; and perhaps it is, assuming Mom is an expert pie-baker, and Pop is an excellent and inventive cook. We've eaten here any number of times, both for breakfast and dinner, including one memorable stop for pie and coffee after being drenched by a thunderstorm while biking, and everytime has been delicious. The menu is basically American with some Polish influence (the owners are named Pohutsky), but with unexpected twists which set the Old Depot above and beyond. On our most recent visit, for breakfast, I ordered a mushroom and cheese omelette, with hashbrowns and wheat toast. Standard diner fare, right? Yes, but the omelette was overflowing with monterey jack cheese and sliced portabellas, sauteed and seasoned with garlic and herbs; the hasbrowns were home-made (not frozen); and the toasting bread was from the house-baked mini-loaves which come standard with each entree. Other reviewers have raved about the pies, so I won't bother, except to add, "those reviewers are right!" The service is always friendly and attentive, quick to refill your coffee mug or glass of iced tea. Credit cards are accepted, but a $1.00 processing surcharge is added, which seems odd. The Old Depot is located on the site of a former railway depot, from the area's days as a center of the lumber industry; it sits on rural street corner, next to the local high school and across from a post office and a branch of the county library. To sum up: the Old Depot is proof one can offer snob-quality food without charging snob-quality prices.

While this is a diner, much of what's served here is from scratch. A lot of menu items should please everyone, even the foodies given this is a rural area . Their specialty is a lot of homemade pie selections. The only negative is hours of operation. They don't open till 7 a.m. and you can't always count on their being open for supper, even if their posted hours say they'll be open. So I suggest calling ahead if planning to dine there after 2 p.m.

The best food ever. Killer breakfast, home fried potatoes. Dinner and lunch, very good. All homemade pies, desserts. All around , very good food.

Old Depot gets a 2 star rating from my simply because it was great the last time we ate there. This time it was better then fast food, but not by much. Bread was great, the whitefish fries were very good, and its a good thing because the "autumn pork chop special" wasnt at all as it sounded. The sauce was thick and like glue while the pork chop itself was tough and very dry, the rice was very dry, I didnt eat what was served and also wasnt asked if it was OK. Wifes usual "taste of poland" was not up to standard as in the past. To top it off, dinner was $38.30, and wound up being charged $39.30. Simple typo, or simply being overcharged. No biggie, just took it out of the tip. WONT BE BACK.

AWESOME! We drive from Atlanta, MI to come here. The peanut butter pie is excellent and we usually take a whole pie or at least some pieces of pie home for another day. Family friendly, wonderful quality food, and great service we love coming to the Depot!

Short Review: -Excellent food -The best pie you can find anywhere -Nice staff -It is pretty small inside even after being rebuilt Longer Review: I honestly wish I had pictures of the pies from this place. They are what make it the best place to get dinner anywhere in the area. Admittedly, there aren't many other 'upscale' restaurants around for say 10 miles, but this place is awesome. The Old Depot has great typical American fare to choose from including steaks, seafood etc. I've been here probably 20+ times over my years as my parents own a cabin not far off. I've never had anything bad on the menu. It is a cosy little place, even still today after it was rebuilt. There's probably not room for more than 50 people inside. The staff is always incredibly helpful and the owner of the place is on site every single day. The owner is the nicest lady in the world. She used to work in Commerce Township Michigan for a place called the Bubble and Squeak Tavern, but moved north. Anyway, she makes pies by hand, personally, every single day of the week. There are usually anywhere from 20-30 different fresh pies to choose from. My favorite over the years has always been her Sugar free Strawberry pie, but you honestly can't go wrong. Last I was there I got Banana Creme pie as well as Moose Tracks (or maybe it was Elk Tracks?) pie. Every slice of pie you get is gigantic, and it is hard to find a better piece of pie anywhere. Now, the Old Dept was rebuilt as I mentioned. A car crashed right into it several years ago and totally destroyed the restaurant. Since it's been rebuilt, it has lost a little bit of its 'Old Depot' nostalgia, but it is still beautiful inside. Also, the new restaurant easily accommodates more people and really is just nicer inside. I cannot recommend a better place to get food/desserts in northern Michigan.

This is an excellent little restaurant. They make their food from scratch, as far as I've been able to tell. The pies are especially good. As a point of interest, The Old Depot really was an old railroad depot; Joburg was at the end of a spur of the Michigan Central Railroad. The tracks were taken up decades ago, but the depot remained. It was located nearer the corner than the current building. A few years ago a car ran through that corner and crashed into the building. As I recall, this was not an accident. It's a sad story, and explains the memorial plaques by the entrance door, in case you were wondering.

In addition to the excellent pies, breakfast is quite good. Like Craig R., we go here when visiting my in-laws' cabin. I've never been here for lunch or dinner, but breakfast is worth the trip. Besides the ususal pancakes-eggs-waffles fare, the menu features some unusual items. I had a gyro scramble - feta, eggs, gyro topped on a pita. Kind of an open faced egg thing. You won't be disappointed. Go for breakfast and take a pie home.
