I Love Aka!! Their Sushi is delicious and their staff is amazing! We go there at least once a month.

Excellent sushi! I was working for a few months in small town, MI and desperately missed having Sushi and Asian food in general. This is definitely worth the trip, they have very good sushi and very good teriyaki steak. It really hit the spot and fulfilled my sushi need, and now I even miss some of their specialty rolls and wish I could have them again! My only negatives to say about the place is that it is tiny (and therefore crowded because they are so popular, and during busy times it can be really hard to get a table) and it is a little more on the pricier side. Does anyone have a menu they could post up?? I am back home now and missing the firecrunch and firecrunch #2 rolls and would love to be able to tell my local sushi chef what was in it so I could taste it again!!

Vegas roll wwas yummy. Service was good, not a long wait for a small place. Nice to find little gem in Jackson, MI. I will be back.
(4)Suzanne M.
I really like AKA....the service is good, the sushi is great, and best of all.....I don't have to drive far to get it. The food is fresh and there is a great variety.
(4)Lesly S.
Nice, cute place with friendly waitstaff.I ordered Tempura Udon and Tempura california roll. It came with salad. I was kind of surprised that the total was $18! Seemed like too much, especially at lunch time. The Udon was good. I didn't care for the tempura roll (I thought it would have tempura wrapped in it, but the whole roll was deep fried). I think what really turned me off was that it was warm when I bit into it. My husband liked it though. I'm willing to try again, but I do find the price a little limiting to making it a regular occasion
(3)Cody W.
Awesome sushi, best around.. Would highly recommend.. If you have had sushi in the past and it sucked or haven't tried it before, this is the place to go, you will love it. Thanks Aka you guys are awesome!!!
(5)Alissa P.
Absolutely LOVE this place. We have been twice in the past couple weeks (seriously would eat there every day if we didn't live 30 miles away.) The servers are polite and very helpful/informative. Despite restaurant's small size, the decor is very nice (clean and modern.) Sit at the bar if u can...it is neat to watch the chefs! So far we have liked everything we tried...spider roll, dragon roll, and california rolls. All fresh and delicious! Yum...now I'm hungry! (My one complaint is they aren't open on Sunday!)
(5)John K.
Stick with the rolls. The bentos are outrageously priced and not very tasty. The tonkatsu and chicken teriyaki have almost no sauce on them and they taste a bit old. The yakiniku is actually very bland bulgogi and the helpings of the unaju is a bit puzzling. The rolls are your best bet
(3)K F.
Decent food - but they seemed understaffed.
(3)James N.
Pretty great place! It's only flaw I would say is it's small for my liking! Sushi is good though! I can't wait till the baby is born so we can start enjoying again!
(4)Suzanna K.
Aka Sushi is def worth the trip to Jackson. The 3 month old sushi restaurant may be small but the food is amazing!!! I love sushi, work at a sushi restaurant and enjoy trying new sushi shops. The bright, stylish and hip restaurant has a very nice atmosphere. Everything looks VERY clean and professional. The specialty rolls caught my eye with all unique combinations of fish and preparation. The Maki roll is very BIG, good and deep fried. I don't really like deep fried rolls but its very light with minimal breading and DELISH! The Lobster Roll is good but I thought it could use more Lobster. But def worth the try. The Volcano Roll II is VERY SPICY but oh so tasty. I usually don't think that things are often spicy but this roll surprised even my taste-bud-less boyfriend too. The amount of crab mix in the Volcano Roll II was perfect and the baked outside made this roll definitely our favorite of the night despite the spiciness. We opted for the Eel and Avocado roll as our last roll and it seemed the standard but larger than normal sushi restaurants. I also observed that the sushi nigiri pieces are large and well worth their price. The miso soup was good with big tofu chunks in it. To end the night, we topped off our dinner with a Deep Fried Green Tea Ice Cream. It was very yummy but too much whip cream. I would recommend that you ask for less whip cream. Overall, GREAT service, GREAT food and I would recc this place to everyone.
(5)Matt R.
Went here a second time the other day. Service was better this time. Sushi was still good. They obviously had one chef doing the "basic" rolls & one doing the top quality stuff. The chef doing the good stuff was right in front of me. What creativity! He was awesome. I watched him for 30 minutes while I ate. Just amazing presentation. My ONLY knock on this place is that they kinda nickel & dime ya on the extras. It was $3 for hot tea :( The miso soup was pretty cheap. Also their ginger salad had fancy greens on top, but iceberg lettuce underneath. Overall, still sold on this place. Lucky for Jackson MI that their only sushi option is a good one.
(4)Jon K.
A real treat and unexpected for Jackson. The miso is great and the atmosphere is fitting. A diverse menu makes this a great place for sushi fiends and first timers
(4)Scott S.
It's nice to see Jackson finally getting a sushi restaurant. I've already been twice since they opened a week ago and had pretty good food both times. The only complaint would be the salads, which come with iceberg lettuce instead of something nicer. The service was kind of spotty both times but that's kind of expected when a place first opens.
(4)Shaun H.
Expectations not high for sushi in Michigan, especially Jackson; however I think it is as good as any place in Ann Arbor. True gem for the city. Hope for continued success. Seating is a bit scarce. Maybe they can find some way to expand or move to larger location. Take-out is best. Usually ready within 20 minutes.
(4)Dani A.
I had heard rumors about a good sushi place in Jackson. I laughed a little, thinking it couldn't possibly be true, but I was wrong. AKA Sushi is hidden back behind the Starbucks, but it seems like people it seems like the word has gotten around to everyone because it seems to always be busy. And they should, they have a large selection of good, fresh, sushi. Plus it is nice to have something different in Jackson.
(4)Edward K.
Great local sushi. Best in Jackson, MI!
(4)Barbara S.
Ate at AKA for first time today. This is a small place, so be prepared for it being busy at lunch time. Service was very friendly and the sushi was excellent. We sat at the sushi bar and so it was fun to watch the sushi being made. Prices about average for sushi. I was curious about a Sushi place in Jackson, but it did not dissapoint. We will be back. I will agree with one commentor, that the rolls are a bit large. Not that I minded more, but a bit difficult to eat in one bite with the chop sticks.
(4)Jon T.
Awesome sushi, great decor, wonderful staff, fun atmosphere - definitely my favorite place to get sushi in southern Michigan, which is good 'cause it's one of two places with sushi I know of in my general area :-). A tad on the small side as far as the location goes (they ought to knock down the wall and take over the vacant store space next door!), so much so that I've only once not had to wait to be seated, but Aka has always been well worth the wait!
(5)Vance P.
Holy maguro madness!! This place was truly fantastic and I think this may be the first time I've ever given 5 stars to a place. (If you look through my other reviews, you'll see I am not one to hesitate in the ventilation of negative reviews....) I was a little skeptical at first looking at the outside and then noticing right away there were no Japanese or other Asian customers upon walking in (sorry for the blatant profiling there, but that's usually a pretty good indicator of quality, especially when it comes to sushi in many cases). I digress.... Despite that, I was impressed with the cool looking interior, the lighting fixtures, the color scheme, the music (Radiohead came on!! Thank you music gods!) and the friendly attitude of the hostess & wait staff. Thankfully they had my favorite Japanese beer: Kirin and the edamame were really good too. Not too salty and easy to pop the beans in your mouth from the shell. I ordered my favorite nigiri sushi: tuna (maguro), salmon and unagi. Plus I got a roll of some sort, but I am sorry I can't remember the name. It had orange tobikko on the outside and I think there was crab/avocado in it. Everything was wonderful, but I was most impressed by the tuna. Good god, in the 10 years I lived in Japan, I don't think I ever had such a thick slice of meaty, red tuna like that. Ok, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm trying to drive home a point here: folks, you can't find quality tuna like that very often and the fact that I am finding it in an in-land State---not too mention in the MIDDLE of that in-land State is pretty much a damn miracle. Ugh. When I think about all the Japanese people I know in the Novi-Farmington Hills-Plymouth and Ann Arbor area who are saddened by the closing of Izakaya Sanpei and are frustrated with the poor quality of Sakura, Fumi and Yotsuba, I can't help but think you all need to petition to have Aka Sushi open up a location in that area---or rent a party bus to take you all the way to Jackson and back. Well, that's my two yen. It was a great evening :-)
(5)Matt W.
Great sushi, quick service. I've been to lots of good sushi restaurants in Ann Arbor and this place holds it own with any of them. Crunch Munch roll is terrific.
(5)Debbie T.
My favorite Japanese restaurant. The food is always good and so is the service. They have full section of sushi and sashimi including vegetable rolls. We really like the tempura appetizer as well. The place is small but comfortable. It is great place for pick up too.
(5)Casie W.
Sushi was fresh and delicious. Great selection. Tuna sashimi was a very generous serving and wonderfully fresh tasting. Service was friendly and efficient.
(5)Jessica C.
Sushi is good. Try the monster role for a non-traditional, cheese-covered gem. Service is wretched. The wait staff can't get their act together despite the small size. Takeout recommended!
(2)Kait S.
Second time here: just as delicious as the first. Friendly, personable staff and small yet comfortable space. Sushi is prepared at the bar, in plane view and the whole kitchen is visible but not intrusive. Sushi: delightful and fresh. There are plenty of non-cream cheese options, cooked and raw options. Appetizers: the goyoza are light, delicate and flavorful. I prefer the fried version for the texture.
(4)Toni O.
Just okay..... Bites are WAY to big. Waitress was not knowledgeable on wild caught or farm raised. We were told the salmon was wild caught.... I suspect it was not(I almost spit it back out because it was so chewy) Ginger was just okay, rolls were okay. Nice presentation.
(3)corey w.
I am not a sushi connoisseur, but AKA carryout was excellent. I ordered spicy salmon tempura and shrimp tempura -- both were huge, plenty of food for $12. As others mentioned, it's a small place so waiting for your carryout order is a bit awkward, especially because it takes a good 15 minutes, which (from my understanding) is normal for sushi. I'll definitely come back.
(4)Melissa N.
Had the tofu and cucumber avocado roll. Was very delicious !!! Definitely recommend this place!! Was very close to our hotel.
(4)Jei R.
Positives: The portions were large. It appears they sacrificed a half a head of lettuce for the obligatory salad. The Saba, hamachi and unagi nigiri all looked great and tasted pretty good too, but didn't quite live up to their appearance. I am sure their international (read sushi rolls with the rice on the outside and various sauces) would have been very good. That said, the nigiri was good enough that I ventured off the sushi menu... Negatives: The gyudon was not bad, but also not good. I don't know how to describe it well. The flavor was weak and the beef didn't look right, too pale. Should have stuck with the sushi menu. The non-sushi menu is the true test of a Japanese restaurant. Also, I don't think the Ikura was fresh. A little mushy and in my experience the eggs should pop with flavor, but these were duds on arrival. Conclusion: Especially for a small town, I'd give thumbs up for the sushi. I would not recommend venturing off the sushi menu. If I lived in Jackson I'd probably go back on occasion. But for my money, I'll likely see if any of the local Mexican joints have good taquitos next time I'm in town.
(3)Ian B.
Best Sushi in this part of the world. Really good! Def worth waiting for a seat. Glad you are in Jackson Michigan! Not too $$$ either.
(5)Michael T.
Good sushi. Good prices. Good deal. Nothing over the top or crazy spectacular like the sushi you would get in Florida or California but it gets the job done. Definitely would recommend this place if you like sushi.
(4)Stephanie A.
Best sushi place in town! The restaurant itself is very small and if you happen to stop for dinner you might have to wait 10-15 mins for a table, but it's worth the wait. It is some of the best sushi I've had, even better than most places I've had at home in California. Would recommend this place to everyone
(5)Beth H.
Not just the best sushi in Jackson...the best sushi I've ever had. Never disappoints!
(5)Nick W.
Best sushi in town! You watch them make it in front of you and it always tastes amazing! Servers are friendly, fast, and efficient! Generous portions and reasonably priced makes it my favorite place for sushi.
(5)J H.
Will not be returning unless they get rid of Audra- the unbelievably rude manager who after having an altercation with a costumer remembers the costumers name off of their debit card and then stalks them on Facebook (I know this because the freak accidentally friend requested me while stalking my page...) I have never met this girl outside of aka sushi nor do we have any mutual friends so what the heck was she doing on my Facebook page? To say that I am a little creeped out would be an understatement....
(1)Jason C.
Excellent food, tiny dining room.
(5)Wesley C.
The only reason this is not five stars is the dining room. It's just a little cramped. The sushi is amazing and I come here whenever I'm in town.
(4)Shinya S.
Being from a bigger city, dining while I'm on a business trip in Jackson has been quite challenging. This place had by far the best rating of any restaurants around, so a colleague of mine and I gave this place a shot, and boy are we glad we did. I don't usually trust yelp reviews on sushi, especially in a rural town like Jackson. And I grew up in Japan until I was 16, so my sushi taste pallet is quite sharp. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food, as well as the friendly and cute waiting staff. The decor is clean and modern, and food was excellent. We ordered veggie tempura appetizer, edamame, salmon/avocado roll, spicy tuna, tempura salmon, and eel/cucumber roll, and they were all delicious. If you like sushi, you need to eat at this place when you're in Jackson. I'm thinking of going back again tonight, but too much sushi may not be too good for health. But there aren't to many good choices in this town.
(5)Cyn S.
I'm vegetarian so I can only review AKA's veggie items. I love veggie sushi and have known what is decent since I'm from Vancouver, Canada. Aka is the only sushi eatery in Jackson I could recommend to anyone. There aren't many others in this Midwest town but the quality is always pretty consistent here. The servers are attentive, friendly and as quick as allowed by usual busy crowd at mealtimes. You get what you pay for with their better than average ingredients and presentation. The big thing I wish they offered are the hot towels traditionally offered at good sushi establishments.
(4)Kristl R.
This is the best sushi place I have ever been to. The tiger roll and the spicy tuna or spicy salmon are my favorite. I have always had great service at aka. The fish is also fresh and tastes wonderful.
(5)Silvia C.
Very delicious rolls:) so happy to have a good sushi place so close by. Take out was super fast, 5 minutes and it was ready. Very fresh and yummy. It's definitely worth all the good reviews!
(4)Jim F.
The food has always been great but the service is poor during busy times. Wether they are packed or just a few customers they will only have 2 waiters on staff. Plan on waiting if its noon or 6, even on carry out.
(4)Nick S.
This is truly a diamond in the rough. You would not expect to get sushi of this quality in Jackson Michigan. Everything on the menu that I have had is excellent and I ate here 1-2 a week for several months. I would put the sushi here up against what you would get anywhere in the US. Definitely worth the trip if you are in town, and it's not like there are many other options.
(5)Courtney D.
This place has great tasting sushi, friendly hard working staff, and a fairly clean environment! The sushi in my opinion can be a little large for my liking and it can be quite expensive to eat there if you aren't careful, but I still keep coming back because I love the atmosphere and the large sushi still tastes amazing!
(4)Megan G.
This place has delicious rolls! There are so many choices between raw rolls, tempura, and deep fried. There's something for everyone! The inside is so cute and cozy! Would definitely recommend!
(5)Maggie G.
Well that was just bizarre. I would have given this place a great rating and I rarely complain about service, as far as I'm concerned good food can usually trump anything. BUT this is just crazy. I had lunch there and when I went to pay they informed me that the credit card machine was down and it would just be a minute. 15 minutes later and having to get back to work I was told it was still down and would just have to wait. I let them know that I simply had to leave and they said well not until you pay. Ok. So I left my card there and headed back to work expecting to pick it up after work. Was called out of town and ended up not having my debit card for the next 3 days. When I went back to get my card I was expecting an apology, maybe even part of my bill comped or a gift certificate...something. What did I get? A rude reaction, a call to a manager to see if they were able to give my card back or did I still need to be charged and upon getting the receipt a bill for 8 dollars more than what my lunch was. When I informed them of the overage she called the manager back in front of me and said "the lady is claiming we charged her more" to which the manager stated I could have a free roll $5 or under. Wow. When I said "but that doesn't even cover the amount I was charged let alone the inconvenience of the whole situation" I was ACTUALLY cut off mid sentence and told "well you know what? Its all we're going to do so thats that." My jaw literally dropped and I said why are you being rude to me, I'm the one that was charged mor...Cut off AGAIN. Same phrase as before with ruder tone. I left. Here's what annoys me the most. It isn't that I was personally offended. It's the stupidity and bad business sense. I was going to be in that place at least once a week. I was going to recommend it. And over one bill they lost that. They could have offered me a free meal, taken the 10 dollar hit and made hundreds off of me. Just plain stupid. I wish I could say that it was a one time thing but the first time I went in I was also treated rudely by a different server. Management needs to fix these issues ASAP..oh wait the manager was also rude. It's a systemic problem. Too bad, the food and decor are quite good.
(1)Patrick T.
Came here for dinner after a day on the lake with some friends. The restaurant is on the smaller side, and pretty busy, so we had to wait for a table. The food was surprisingly good. The whole shrimp or Ama Ebi was quite nice. The sushi rolls weren't bad eiter. I didn't have high hopes, since Jackson seems like the boondocks. The sake was great as well.
(4)Jake P.
Often times sushi places are hit or miss... AKA is a hit. Hands down, this is the best sushi joint in mid Michigan! You would be hard pressed to find a better place with better prices, and quality. If I have one criticism for this place, it would be to expand the location, and get more seething space. Also, the cloth plants are a little bit tacky, spring for some real plants for decorating. Check this place out! You will love it.
(4)Liz C.
AKA is my favorite sushi restaurant! When I worked in Jackson I ordered from here at least once a week. The prices are great, the food is even better, and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend this place. I now live in Chicago and have not been able to find sushi that matches the caliber at AKA. I go everytime I'm back in the area, even if that means ordering take out as I'm driving past Jackson on 94.
(5)Doyle H.
I was trying to convince my mom to come with me for her first sushi experience. I'm so glad that she didn't! They *do* know that sushi us meant to be bite-sized portions, right? These amateur rolls were biscuit-sized and over-stuffed with rice. Almost impossible to eat with one bite. Everything tasted frozen. I caught a glimpse inside one of their freezers, and it looked like it *was* all frozen! The spicy tuna was not spicy, and looked like pink tapioca. It tasted like it too. There was no spiciness involved at all. The spider roll was NOT good. Definitely not fresh crab. I'm not even sure that was fresh this month. Looked and tasted spoiled. You want confirmation of that? For going on two days now, I've been afraid to leave the house and get too far away from a "throne". I've been here before, and on previous trips, I remember kinda digging the place. That's the *only* reason they got 2 stars from me. If I was judging on just this trip, they wouldn't have even received that. Something's changed. I don't think I'll be back.
(2)Ally N.
This place opened my junior year at Albion, and kind of became a regular haunt for my sorority sisters and me. And then after I graduated, I moved to Ann Arbor, which is burgeoning with sushi options. I still haven't found anywhere I've liked quite as much as this one. It's small, but so is everywhere else I've been. I love the decor and the food,, and the service as great as well. Jackson is probably the last place on earth you'd expect such a nice little sushi place, but there it is. I miss it early, as I often cannot find the time to make the 30 minute drive to stop by.
(5)Karri B.
First time I ever had sushi, good food, good service. Go there a few times a month, been to other sushi restaurants and AKA is a good place for a small town. Could expand their menu.
(4)Jesse B.
Great find! Very friendly service and great food. A bit small as space is concerned but well worth it. I eat a lot of sushi in Fort Wayne, and Aka outdoes each one. Their Dragon roll was phenomenal. The various other pieces I tried was the tuna, squid, and sea urchin. Large quality portions. All amazing. Be sure to order the house tea during your visit. I can't wait to get back there.
(4)Ben C.
AKA is a great! Especially for a little no-name town like Jackson. The atmosphere is simple yet very appealing. The main seating flows well, and if you have the chance, sit up at the bar and watch the sushi chef work his magic. Then go ahead and give him a tip!
(5)Isaac W.
"Don't forget the Sake"! Did you know that Sushi is NOT raw fish? Most of Jackson doesn't know this as I've recently found out. In fact, a quick poll of some folks around here seem to have in mind "Sashimi" when the more worldly invoke the term "Sushi". Their loss, I suppose: AKA is a scrumptious, delicious, healthy, and fun place to eat, where customer interaction, ambiance, service, and convenience converge into a Shangri-La not expected in this small town. True, some menu items are in fact just some form of fish, but many others include just vegetables, or a delicious combination of fruit (like Avocado) and Tempura (deep-fried whatever). In fact, if you are a land-lubbing Westerner scared of a little culture, you should try the California roll, which is often Crab meat, Avocado, and Mango and has a zesty, sweet flavor. AKA's California Roll is good, but their Spicy California Roll is great! Even if you are too chicken, that is what you may eat. The Chicken Teriyaki bowl is one of the most Americanized and probably the most familiar item for those of you unable to have a little adventure, and AKA's is delicious. Finally for those of you who DO enjoy some excitement, should order the Sushi Boat sometime, which is a 4-person dish served on a Clipper-style model ship and is always the envy of all who sit nearby. Oh - and don't forget the Sake - which is the perfect compliment to any of the dishes on the menu!
(5)Christina P.
When AKA opened up my spring semester senior year at Albion, I was shocked at how amazing their sushi was and how cute they had done up the place. It's not a huge place, but that is what I liked most about its authenticity. The portions were large and their were a variety of rolls to choose from. The spicy tuna rolls were better than most stuff I've had in Ann Arbor. :) Go AKA!
(4)K S.
I met my college buddy for lunch at AKA, who was visiting his wife's family lives in the area. To be honest, I was very skeptical to try Japanese place in Jackson, Michigan. I was like, "Japanese restaurant in Jackson?! " I got more concerned as I noticed sushi chefs were not speaking Japanese... But what a wonderful surprise! Chirashi Sushi and few other rolls I've ordered were prepared right, and tasted great! I always order Chirashi Sushi (various sashimi over a bed of rice) whenever I try out a new Japanese place. It gives you a great indicator of freshness of fish, and how well rice is prepared. AKA was using fairly good grade of rice too. Okay, egg was not done right to be picky. Too sweet and adding yellow food coloring. A buddy of mine ordered a lunch box, which allow you to taste different stuff. On this end (stuff prepared in kitchen) I was not too impressed. Tempura was not done right, Gyoza was frozen stuff, and miso soup was lacking "umami." In quick summary, AKA serves good sushi, but "okay" kitchen stuff. Also bento box for $15.00? That's high. Chirashi Sushi at $19 is not too bad for what I got, but one version for lunch and dinner? It would be a great improvement if AKA could improve menu variety (lunch vs. dinner menu). I'll be going back to AKA when I'm on expense account :-)
(4)Bryan S.
I was up in Jackson on a business trip and just wanted a simple dinner. I am from the D.C. area which has some amazing sushi restaurants and this place was equal to some of my favorite places back home. It is a small spot but service was good and the food was incredible. I only tried the rolls to start with (Vegas, Salmon) but I am going to try out some other dishes later this week. It is definitely worth a stop here to have some quality sushi.
(5)Karin J.
Classic place for me and my friends. Love americanized sushi and this is as americanized as it gets!! Crunch vegas is a definite if you love crunchy, creamy, and spicy! House salad is always a must. Good fast service! Great prices
(5)Yen T.
Yummers! I definitely want to come back! It's pretty hard to find a non-chain restaurant in Jackson, not to mention, it's also pretty hard finding ethnic food in Jackson. So it was pretty cool when we came across AKA Sushi. They had a great selection of sushi to choose from (a whole entire 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper!), with a smaller sheet for other items like rice bowls, noodles, etc. I had the tempura shrimp sushi, tried the avocado rolls, and the spicy shrimp rolls, and it was all freaking good. It's a small location (seats about 30?), but that makes it feel more nice and cozy. There's a sushi bar where you can watch your food being made. I wish they had a plum sake, but (and I'm currently living in Cali), it was nice to see Japanese (or at least Asian) workers behind the sushi counter making the sushi.
(5)Hanna R.
Seeing how it is the only sushi place in jackson and its amazing its understandable that its pretty packed. Also the place is really tiny, but so worth the wait. So glad jackson finally has some great sushi!
(5)Larry B.
AKA is pleasant surprise in Jackson. People passing through on I-94 who are sushi fans could do no better to the north in Lansing or east in Ann Arbor. Frequently I speak to people who travel to Jackson just for AKA. The volcano II is my personal favorite, but most of the house rolls most will find enjoyable. Most of the waitresses are extremely helpful in guiding newbies and experienced diners through the extensive menu.
(5)Tara V.
Since I travel for a living, I live and die by Yelp reviews so I figured I should finally start posting some of my own. Aka was very good sushi and it was fresh. Beware of the ones that indicate spicy though, I was literally sweating.
