The Breakwater moved into the old Big Boy Restaurant after it changed owners. It still has the "big boy" feel to it (along with most of the original decor) Don't let this fool you though. it's still every bit the good greasy spoon Big Boy used to be but with a much bigger and better menu. Great for a hangover sunday breakfast. (Or post sunday church get together) depending on which crowd you roll with.

Staff was friendly, but food was sub-par. Mozzarella sticks were pretty good, but the chicken and rice soup had no rice and the pie was soggy.

We stopped on our way home from the ice caves to eat a late lunch and gave the breakwater a try. I ordered a Ashland burger new on the menu and watched as the largely teenage staff goofed around in the back and another couple came in and left due to lack of attention. I ordered a medium burger and a charcoaled to a crisp burger came back. The cheese was imitation quality and I was unable to eat it. I did eat what was somewhat edible of my burger and left the rest of my plate. The onion rings were ok. I had asked the waitress if the onion rings were crispy coated or smooth and a male staff member yelled back that all the rings come prebattered and he didn't know. The rest of my family was also disappointed in their meals. My husbands chicken was undercooked and smelled funny, his biscuit cold and mashed potatoes looked like a science experiment. Steer clear of this resteraunt if your truly hungry. Luckily we are headed south on our way home and will get some real food.

You know, it's okay. Just okay. Too few options in this town, this one was ten steps from the hotel. I ordered two cakes and eggs, medium well, and bacon. Cakes: huge. Not a ton of flavor. Butter is soft and good. Syrup is Mrs Butterworths I think. Eggs: no salt or pepper. Cooked less than medium. MEDIUM WELL DOES NOT MEAN COMPLETELY RUNNY. Bacon: flavor could be good if it wasn't microwaved. I still ate it because BACON. Ambiance is 1970's diner plus Dennys. Drab but with updated booths. Seems clean enough. Doesn't smell. 3/5.

It's a diner. So the quality is iffy on some items... don't order salad! I got a plain hamburger... it wasn't seasoned, but other wise was good.

Came here for breakfast. Got my order wrong. Then found hair in my second order. Waitress was inattentive. Horrible horrible experience. Sat for 45 mins n couldn't take a bite of either platters brought to me.

We visited this place while on our way to Copper Harbor. I love places that serve breakfast all day! The Breakwater had a good menu at good prices. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. I found the biscuits a little too hard for my liking. It took some work to cut them. The gravy was excellent though. The kids had pancakes, which I remember tasting good as well. The service here was good too. There was a brief spell where I could've used more water and the waitress was no where to be found, but hey, we all need breaks. As Greg said, it is a good greasy spoon.

Good for breakfast! Stopped on a Saturday - it was hopping at 10 am. Nice service. Big portions!! I really enjoyed the apple-fritter french toast - comes with 3 sausage links or slices of bacon. I also tried their hash browns - decent. My husband has the ham & cheese omelette with english muffin and hash browns potatoes. He said it was fine. Nothing gourmet here - just plain old good diner breakfast.

We enjoyed our meal so much at the other location in Superior that we decided to stop here again on our way home while passing through the UP. The deserts were to die for and I really enjoyed the chili. It was great, hearty homestyle cooking. Overall we had two great meals at both locations.

Oh man, do we look forward to coming here after a few days of wilderness camping in the Porkies. We order platefuls of eggs, pancakes, hash browns, sausages and bacon, biscuits and gravy, and the coffee keeps coming. The waitresses are all sweet and attentive. We leave happy and full. It's now a family tradition!

I ate here and then came back to my room and looked at the reviews. Wow, my experience was way better than a lot on here. I'm glad now I couldn't get any cell service here to check Yelp from my phone before trying it or I probably would have gone someplace else and missed out on the best breakfast I've had in years. Probably what surprised me the most was that by the time my food arrived (pretty quickly) I was only just starting to feel the slightest bit hungry so it's not like I was feeling like I was starving and anything would have tasted great. Just being the picky person that I am I couldn't resist trying to find fault with my meal and the only thing I could maybe find a fault in was that for my taste preference the breading on the chicken fried steak may have been just a little touch too peppery for me. I suspect though that for most people they wouldn't have felt that way. The young lady who served me was very attentive and friendly. The professional way she handled her duties as a server is what I would have hoped to get from somebody who'd been a server for at least 10 years and by the looks of her I doubt if she's old enough to have been working for more than a couple of years. Kudos to her for putting the icing on the cake and making it a great dining experience. I would strongly recommend that you not let the previous bad reviews deter you form visiting this restaurant. I had breakfast for supper so I can't speak to other types of food they serve, but they certainly do breakfast great. Then when you figure in friendly professional service it's the total package of great breakfast restaurants.
