Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Delicious. Friendly. Authentic. Fresh. Always changing. Great atmosphere. Yum.

They charge for more chips and salsa which is embarrassing for a tex-mex restaurant. The verde sauce for the burrito was pretty good but the burrito itself was disappointing. It had too much chicken (plentiful and giant pieces) and cilantro so you couldn't taste anything else. Service was OK but waiter did not return much. Drink order took a long time to fill even though we were close to the bar. Restaurant was deserted on a Saturday evening. Yikes.

The carne asada was a nicely cooked piece of meat with trivial maninate, and almost totally devoid of seasoning. The seafood enchiladas, however, were so salty as to be almost inedible - were they made with sea water? Table salsa was tasty, but $4 for another miniscule container? C'Mon! That's a freebee, just like chip are anywhere else. Oh, the chips were very good. Price was a bit high for this town . . . All in all, mediocre compared to Mexican done by actual Mexicans, but not bad for the UP of Michigan, where Mexican is almost impossible to come by. Just figure out seasoning, especially salt!

While my el pastor tacos were ok and I enjoyed the mango salsa, everything else was in dire need of seasoning. Chips were good and fresh.

In a place like Hancock, and on that sad, empty street, finding an establishment where people care about the little things is hard. Decor, mood lighting, artwork, and preparing things "fresh" is a city commodity, and not something you see all the time. I was pleasantly surprised by the selection, the quality of the food, and how much the people there cared about what they were doing. That's the four stars. I didn't give five stars because of the service. I think she was new, but the waitress messed up two orders and ran away so fast and didn't come back for so long that we ran out of water (someone else had to refill it after we asked) and when she did and I pointed out the missing food, she tried to correct me. I had said what I wanted several times with fingers (3 tacos), and everyone heard me and confirmed it. She said okay and disappeared. My husband ordered enchiladas, carnitas, with red sauce and she brought enchiladas, carne asada, with mole. She left before we could point it out and get it fixed. Just put it on the table distractedly and kept walking. I've heard that with other servers, though, it's great. It might've been a one time thing!

Nice ambience and good food. I ordered tacos el pastor and they were good. My partner ordered chicken enchiladas. The chicken was a bit overdone, but the mole sauce was great. Chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. Sides were very good. I got three cheese mashed potatoes rather than rice - yum. Service was excellent. Really enjoyed our dinner.

Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for the taco buffet. Good food and the guacamole was great. Service was good. Didn't give 5 stars as I was comparing to other restaurants I know near my home. We will be back!

I had been here when they first opened. Wasn't impressed. Came back for a visit a couple of years later and still not impressed. The regular salsa is so bland that even adding hot sauce to it didn't flavor it enough. The guacamole was amazing. The carnitas okay. The rice was horrible. (How can you mess up rice?!) and the refried beans were a globby mess of tasteless mess. The menu is definitely odd. I live in Southern California so have been to lots of mexican restaurants. Have never seen ahi ahi on the menu. I have at sushi restaurants and order it many time but not at a mexican restaurant.. But seems to reflect the menu here...not quite mexican, not quite (?). Maybe real Mexican would be too much up here? Not sure. Service was...clueless.

Stopped for evening dinner. Service was pretty quick, but server did not ask about refills. Food was average at best although we got a lot of food. Rice and decried beans were cool. Did have some nice local beer which helped. If you want good Mexican, this probably isn't the place.
(3)Victoria W.
If you want american over priced not so good food you go here. If you want good Mex food you go to rodeo. The only good thing about it is guacamole that's it.

After living in Texas, I've become quite skeptical about any Mexican restaurant I try in my home state of Michigan, let alone in the upper peninsula. However, I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at Habaneros. Everything from the drinks to the food to the ambiance was exceptional and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience from start to finish. There are limited food options in the area and I consider this to now be one of my new top choices, I can't wait to go back and would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
(5)Christopher L.
Started out very poorly. Bartender waited till I ordered something to tell me that it wasn't in stock with three items. The girl even messed up my beer order. Twice!! I had to steal napkin and silverware from another table, after the hostess seated us in a corner very private which wouldn't be so bad but we were right by the kitchen soo and seen the waiters/waitress' playing grab ass. So after my wrong two beers and my GF's watered down margarita, with cold chips, we had to walk up front to pay because no one came back. Horribly dissatisfied.
(1)Steve E.
Nice decor and bar. Paid $12 for fish tacos which came 1 hour later and the place was half full!! Service was absolutely awful!!! The consistency quality is just terrible. Just look at the amount of fish was in the taco! They've been open well over a year now so hopefully the work to improve things.
(2)Anne O.
I ordered a strawberry margarita......out of strawberry....?? The waitress suggested a raspberry one, for $1 more......it had no flavor, all I could taste was the tequila. Out of half of the lunch specials.....the place was empty, at 12:30...... Out of guacamole....... Finally got our meal.....the rice tasted like pure plastic. Lost our business, and i would assume others since the place was empty at lunch time. Go get a margarita somewhere else for sure.
(1)Kelsey B.
I was actually surprised about how generally overall good my experience here was. I kept hearing how terrible the service was, but we had an excellent waitress. I can't remember her name but she has long dark hair and was totally on point. The margaritas were super tasty and my burrito was massive and really really good. So, basically I would definitely go back, and not just because this is a small town with a teeny tiny amount of good restaurants, but because it was actually enjoyable all around. I have zero complaints and I'm actually thinking about turning Teen Mom 2 off and leaving the house in single digit weather for a burrito, so they get five stars.
(5)Justin E.
This place was better than expected. It was recommended by a local so we gave it a shot. The atmosphere was a bit cheesy and bright. Kind of what you expect from an Tourist Mexican restaurant. The waitress was nice and friendly we didn't not have any problems with service, but we were the only ones in the restaurant for lunch. The table side guacamole was pleasantly surprising as fresh and tasty. The rest of the food was good. Not so much authentic Mexican food but the fancy tourist version. The only thing bothersome was this was obviously a family run restaurant because the college and high school aged kids kept coming in and out and talking to their relatives. It felt more like moms kitchen then a restaurant hence why I only gave them three stars.
(3)Carole R.
I love the interior and I have not had a bad meal there in the dozen or so times I've been there. The burritos are huge, the chicken is flavorful, the tomatillo salsa is amazing as is the table side guacamole. I've had hit and miss service, but overall no horribly bad experiences. It's not trying to be tex-mex or authentic Mexican, so don't expect it to be.
(4)Carol M.
Went to lunch here - first time at this place. The guacamole was very good, but my steak salad was horrible. I asked for my steak cooked medium and it came burnt. I didn't have the time to wait for a new salad so I picked at it. Rather pricey and I probably won't return.
(1)Nick B.
Amazing!!! Don't let the small town idea fool you!! This place is great! From the live music some nights to the amazing atmosphere; this place has it all!!! Not to mention the food is amazing, margaritas are killer and the service is stellar!!! Don't miss this place of you're in town!!!!!

I'm updating this review (and dropping some stars) as we've now been back a few times. Each time, there has been more than one screw-up with our orders and food. Service is a mixed bag, too. Sometimes we have wonderful, friendly waitress and sometimes one that makes you wonder how/why she is waiting tables, her attitude is so sour and aggressive. It usually hits the spot if you're absolutely dying for something resembling Mexican or Tex-Mex; but, don't hold your breath for their quality. The sides (rice, mashed potatoes, grilled corn) have always been bland and often completely dried out/inedible; while the entrees range from "o.k." to "so-so." Last time, my guest and I each had a burrito with the green tomatillo-serrano sauce on top and found it sickeningly sweet--almost like a dense Nutrasweet or syrup flavor in the sauce. That said, I still crave margaritas and tacos once in awhile and there are precious few places to get those up here; so, we may return when the craving for those strikes. After having lived in San Antonio, TX for a few years and having family in AZ we visit frequently, I realize my standards for Mexican/Tex-Mex may be a bit high. So, when we eat here, I try to remember to keep my expectations LOW.
(2)Lori K.
No No No...when the hostess asks you "How can I help you"? when you walk in, we should have turned around right there..., yes, we are here to eat, what else do we want? Then she wasn't sure is they could serve us bar food or lunch at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday, very awkward. Well...we should have turned around.. The place itself was ok. The waitress sucked. She wouldn't let anyone substitute anything and offered to let me have two sauces on my enchiladas (I was like, ok?) then came back and said the chef was new and couldn't do that. Yes she really said that. Chips and salsa are a standard at a Mexican restaurant. They charge $6 for it here. Yes, $6 just for chips and salsa!!. The fish tacos we heard were so good - Not!! They were heavily breaded so you tasted mostly bread. Also the waitress brought out corn later that we didn't order. We had carnitas enchildadas and carnitas tacos. Nothing wowed anyone. I would go somewhere, anywhere else. We don't think this restaurant is going to make it.
(2)Alan H.
High price, mediocre food, stingy portions(they had to learn to give complementary chips and salsa and even that is limited and what Mexican place gives you only a spoonful or two of rice and beans), and owned by the same people as The Library. They really need to work on consistency in both service and food. It has a lot of potential but their cost for what you get prevents them from reaching it. All that being said, the caramel flan was really good.
(2)Ann G.
I love this place! I went in October had had a wonderful meal. We sat and ate at the bar and the two bartenders were so kind and helpful. I had a huge burrito and it tasted great. They have some delicious hot hot salsa! Habaneros is just what Hancock needed. I love the inside too. I hope you succeed.

Cheap Albariño and quesadillas the size of your head? I'm officially sold!

Our family of five sampled a variety of menu items last night. Overall we left happy and satisfied. It's a nice place which seems to draw locals, visitors & college students alike. Definitely fills a void in the area. Steak Carnitas burrito got two thumbs up from our seventeen year old. The Crunchy Beef Burrito (from the daily specials menu) was also well received by our sixteen year old, however his side of "red" rice, which was supposed to be spicy but really wasn't, sat virtually untouched. Our youngest ordered the NY Strip & mashed potatoes which were delish. My husband got the steak fajitas which he said were great. I ordered Baja Whitefish tacos. They were decent but there was room for improvement - two smallish pieces of fish, some green cabbage (our waitress said it's usually purple) & some avocado. The flavors were good. My two sides were "green" rice - which was supposed to be rice w/ cilantro although I didn't taste or see any - and corn on the cob. Corn on the cob in April in the UP made me curious... It could have been so good - roasted & slightly charred yumm- unfortunately it seems previous reviewers were correct. For some reason they feel the need to plate the sides first & set them under that darn heat lamp. My plate was too hot to touch, the rice & corn were dried out & hard. Unfortunate because it would be such an easy thing to correct. Regarding service, we were seated quickly in what may have been the "bar" side of the restaurant. We had a nice roomy booth. Table service started out well but got slower & slower. We sat for a loooong time with a table full of empty glasses & dirty dishes. Not sure what happened during our meal to cause things to change but we had intended to order desert & changed our mind because we didn't want to spend another hour there. Atmosphere: lively to be sure. Although we couldn't see the patrons seated on the other side of our table, we had no trouble hearing their entire f-bomb filled conversation. Great example for my teenage boys as to why you don't drink till you're drunk. In case they happen to read this, my thirteen year old says he's sorry you're not "getting any"since there's no good looking girls except Riley... Oh yeah & happy 21st birthday!

The food here is delicious and the staff is friendly and courteous. Others have said service was slow this was not my experience food was prompt and wonderful. Only a four because the food is slightly expensive.

Habaneros got very bad reviews to start with and turned a lot of customers off. This was not undeserved at the time. I believe that the owners noticed recognized the problems and reacted favorably. During my four visits (only one being in those critical winter months of December through February or March), service has been fine, but I have to imagine it has improved since the beginning. Chips and salsa are now free as opposed to the original $6 charge (!). The menu has been reworked somewhat, though I can't say exactly how. Prices are still considered high by many, but entrees such as burritos, tacos, and enchiladas are average in price and above average in taste. The restaurant claims that just about everything is made from scratch, and I have little reason to doubt this. Overall, this has become one of my favorite restaurants in the Keweenaw (though it helps that I live on the same street in Hancock!). A five-star rating is not out of line by Keweenaw standards! If you had a bad experience early on, give it another chance, and visitors to the area, take the early reviews with a grain of salt. If you don't want to risk getting a bad meal for full price, watch for the 40%-discounted gift certificates in the Gazette or the 50% Straight-Up Deals that have been offered at least twice by TV6! I am speaking as a happy customer who has utilized both of these.
(5)Shahien S.
I've definitely had better Mexican food in the past. The $13 burrito wasn't worth the price, quite honestly. Service was great, staff was friendly, food could be a bit cheaper or better.
(2)C J.
Main dish salad menu item is now being served, after weeks (months?) with it being on the menu but never available even at opening time. This is important because vegetarian entrees are few and far between. Even the beans are/are not vegetarian. SOME BEANS ARE MADE WITH LARD! Also the salad dressing has beef broth. PWLEAZE! Lets get rid of the beef broth, lard and unnecessary meat-containing products. This is the 2000's not the 1900's. The salad is essentially a "wilted lettuce" salad with caramelized onions providing the wilting. Normally this means lettuce. I can see having a little more sturdy lettuce but all cabbage? Evidently someone needs to make this dish often enough to figure out that lettuce WILL work! The lack of imagination in this dish is astounding.

They really need to work on consistency in both service and food. It has a lot of potential but their cost for what you get prevents them from reaching it. All that being said, the caramel flan was really good.
