I'm a Westsider fan although I don't go there that often. When I do I always look forward to it as it has been a good experience. But this one was a bit of a downer. I normally order the Polish combo. On my most recent visit however, because I had not visited for some time, I mistakenly ordered the Polish Griddle which I never had before. I had expressed to the wait staff that I wanted the dish with the polish sausage and kielbasa in which she pointed to an item in the menu and I said yes. When the griddle came and I realized I was not getting the Polish Combo, I commented to the wait staff my error although was not looking to change the order. However, no one showed any interest in correcting the situation. The griddle was fine but was no where near what the combo would have been. I was reflecting later that in 'good' restaurants I have been to, the staff would have offered to replace the order accordingly. Also, although I am partly at fault with the incorrect order, it would have been nice if the wait staff who took the order clarified that there were 2 polish dishes in the menu especially since I described the dish to her. As it was, she and another wait staff who I mentioned it to did not want to have anything to do with it. Overall, its a great restaurant but not sure if I'd go back again. I left a bit put off by the lack of consideration on the matter. Their yelp dial was just turned a few notches down for me.

I absolutely LOVE this place!! We ran across it on yelp a few months back and it's so close to the house we figured, why not?? This is our favorite breakfast place in GR!!!

I took my dad out to breakfast on a recent Friday morning, and was surprised to find the place PACKED at 8:30am. Our waitress was friendly, and the menu is pretty extensive if you like meat. There wasn't much for a vegan, but I adapted one of the skillets into potatoes with veggies. It wasn't nearly as good as the Veggie Hash at Real Food Cafe, but it was fine. My dad had something with potatoes, eggs, meat, and a Belgian Waffle. That waffle looked darn delish, I must say. The potatoes had a lot of oil on them, but he said everything was yummy. It wasn't cheap - I paid $11 for some vegetables and toast -- but I'd go back.

This is ok for your average breakfast. Food was hot and tasted good but if you're looking for an out of the box breakfast joint this isn't it. A kids breakfast is 4 dollars and doesn't include a drink (add another 1.50 for that) I had the #1 skillet and it is supposed to come with sausage gravy on top and while it was there, it was only lightly poured down the center. My husband had a burrito and it seemed to satisfy and was stuffed to the brim. Just average but that doesn't make it bad, just not what I was expecting.

Nothing on this menu is less then stellar! They have a great mix of styles as mentioned in previous reviews. I'd say we've been here a dozen times and each time try to select something new from the pretty extensive menu. I love the hardwood smoked bacon!! Pancakes as well are some of my favorite in town. Great service, amazing food, and good vibe will continue to bring us back to this now westside staple for a long time.

Well worth the wait if you go there on the weekend. Great food at a great price. I love the Dill Pickle Soup and the Polish food is just like what mom makes. I usually get breakfast (gotta love breakfast food!) and I never had a bad meal here.

  • Lisa D.

Great little place. Everything is homemade, and lots of traditionally polish fare.

  • Rudy M.

This was my first visit to the Westsider and it was wonderful. The staff was welcoming and the food was great. Everything's homemade and large portioned for breakfast. We will return for sure!

So I would like to tell you that The Westsider Cafe sucks, the food is terrible, the service is awful, and that the place is a dump...but I would be saying that just to keep this place to myself. The truth is, if you knew just how great this place is I might never get a seat again. My wife and I tried The Westsider for the first time yesterday and I have decided that I am going to go back at least every weekend to try each thing on the menu. The redskin potatoes are cooked nigh to perfection and the eggs are wonderful. I believe that many of the things on the menu are homemade. The sausages look like they may have come from one of the many wonderful local meat markets and the bacon is thick cut like it just came off the slicer. The service is excellent and the place is homey and friendly like only a west side establishment can be.

What a great little restaurant. I have been there several times, and the food is always great. If you love home made comfort food, this is the place. My favorites are the quiche, Philly steak sandwich and the skillets. YUM!!!!

  • Andrea T.

This place offers a comfort to the regular cafe. I enjoy the Polish tradition this neighborhood has to offer. I usually go to this place for breakfast, but if your recovering from a hangover and your not sure if you need breakfast or lunch.. I really like the olive sandwich.

Good food, no frills, good service. Just a good place for breakfast and very good prices. Went there for breakfast on a Monday morning and it was pretty full even for a week day morning. I had a Belgium waffle which was as good as any I have ever had and the price was crazy - I think it was $3.50 and the usual price is $7-$8. Did not dare attempt a 5 egg omelet! Would like to go back for lunch to try some of the Polish dishes. Coffee refills were about every 5 minutes until I finally had to stop. Excellent service. Good food. No atmosphere but who cares, it's breakfast.

I may not be polish, but as a westsider, I love The Westsider Cafe. My family and I try to frequent here as much as possible. We especially love the giant breakfast burrito and blueberry pancakes!! Yum!!

We eat here every Sunday morning. We love it. Friendly staff, fast service. Great Polish plate, local sausage and bacon. The owner remembers our and our kid's names too!

The Westsider Cafe doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let that fool you. That changes once you are inside. The inside has kind of the feeling of greasy diner but that is far from the case. Having a weakness for Polish food, my party stuck with a trio of Polish dishes and shared them. The golabki, kielbasa, and pierogi plates. Impressive to see them on the menu! And while they didn't quite compare to what my grandmother or even my mom make, they were pretty darn good! And for the price of each dish we got a ton of food! Good food. Great Deal! Happiness! The Dill Pickle soup and the Tomato Soup although both good were not quite up to par with the rest of the meal. And the side salad that I ordered was good too but way overpriced. Skip this unless you feel you need your vegetables. I would not hesitate to come back here again. For Polish food or to try other dishes. This was a gem that Yelp helped me find and I left feeling like we had won!

Good food, good prices. Happy to have a place w good polish food on the west side of Grand Rapids

Great breakfast! If you go on the weekend (the only time I've been), expect a line, but...don't leave! The wait is very limited with the food and service being well worth the wait!

When you mashup Cuban and Polish food you get the Westsider Cafe. A pleasant surprise in the land of chain restaurant, this breakfast-brunch place has a terrific Cubano sandwich made with tender pork tenderloin, ham and pickles on toasted bread. It is served with delicious black beans and rice on the side. The servers are also pretty amazing. I was here for lunch on a weekday and was in and out in 40 minutes without breaking the bank.

  • Emira R.

I went here for breakfast during a work trip with a coworker. I had the belgian waffle with blueberries and a fruit cup. The waffle was good, crispy and the blueberries were fresh. The fruit cup on the other hand, hmmm, I shouldn't have ordered it. The fruit was not fresh and it didn't taste good either. It's ok if you need a place to grab something quick, but nothing extraordinary.

As always, the Westsider Cafe never disappoints! The food is amazing and the staff are friendly! Definitely the West Sides shining star!

  • Evan M.

Definitely one of my favorite breakfast spots in town! I used to live about 3 miles from this place, and have since moved to Grandville. I'll still make the drive to get a very good breakfast from this spot. My favorite menu items have to be the skillets - especially the Philly Skillet - lots of food for a ridiculously good price. The coffee is much better than 80% of the places I have been to in the Grand Rapids area, as well, which is a nice plus. The only downside is that the restaurant itself is very small and wait times can be up to 30 mins or more depending on what time you go, ESPECIALLY on the weekends. SO, plan ahead and plan to leave full.

It's always a bit noisy but the food is excellent and the waitresses are friendly. The portions are more than large and always hot.

  • Kimchi J.

What a great neighborhood breakfast joint. It's charming and the food's portions are hearty and prices are very affordable. I recommend their breakfast burrito and any of their polish specialties. The polish sausages are locally made.

By far the best place for breakfast in town!!! although your going to wait a long while to get in at typical Breakfast/lunch hours! Large plates of delicious food, lunch offers classic Polish/American fare! Love that they offer GLUTEN FREE substrates even French toast! By far the best in town! the French toast that is! Great friendly service and very clean! One of several Westowns best kept secrets!

We took our grandchildren here (ages 8 and 2) for breakfast. The 2 year old was throwing a fit and wouldn't stop crying. The waitress quickly brought him raisin toast to see if that would help. The hostess brought him fruit. They were all so very kind about the whole embarrassing episode. My husband and I both had eggs, toast, potatoes and sausage. The kids had French toast and sausage. Our eggs were cooked perfectly, the fried red skin potatoes were nice and crispy, but best of all were the delicious spicy link sausages. They were the best any of us ever tasted. Our 2 year old ate 3 of them! He also ate all of his French toast, a good testimonial to it's deliciousness! Our 8 year old grandson raved at his French toast and sausage. This place cannot be missed! Excellent food, and great service - also spotlessly clean.

Super friendly service, fast, not expensive at all. The roasted red potatoes are delicious because they are cooked slightly well done. My egg white omelette was yummy. The avocado was super fresh. My husband's Cuban skillet was average but a little bland, even after hot sauce, and watery? Maybe it was the salsa on top that made it watery. I tried it and it was just "ok." Nothing great just meh. Was good for breakfast but not somewhere I would seek out regularly when in town.

GREAT breakfast place. I went with the Southern Skillet, but there were at least 3-4 other options that I was interested in. Skill it was on point, service was quick, staff was nice, what else can you ask for? I'll be back soon...

I am a huge fan of breakfast. I could eat breakfast for every meal! I am also a huge fan of ma and pa places to eat at. Put those two favorite together and I present you with the westsider. When you walk in you know you are entering someone's pride and joy. The owner even walks around to make sure everything is going well. Pros -great home cooked meal -not too greasy -they allow you to make alterations which a lot of times doesn't happen at busy places like this -it is crowded, which shows people love it here -there are gluten free options -endless coffee, try the houseblend, no idea what it is but it is good -friendly personable staff -large portions for the money=worth the money Cons -it is crowded, I try and go at an off time -street parking, but it is free

I've always found that when it comes to a diner, a wait to get seated is the first good sign. We opted to sit outdoors and service was great. Exciting menu with some unique options including my choice, the Cuban Skillet. Coffee was very good, lots of energy and happy customers. BTW, our meal was delicious.

We came here on a day off and it was busy at 11am on a weekday. The parking is pretty limited, so keep that in mind when you go here. We both had coffee to start and they did a great job on refills and offered to go cups without even having to ask! We ordered the Cuban Skillet and Huevos rancheros. They were both excellent and large portions. I can't get enough of the pork and the ranchero sauce in the huevos rancheros. This place is fantastic! Great service, fantastic menu, good coffee and delicious food.

Very much a let down. After a few positive review from friends and also here on Yelp, I thought I'd actually enjoy The Westsider but said enjoyment was completely absent. First off: Molly, our server was fantastic. She was warm and genuine and just the right amount of attentive. Actually, the waitstaff and hostess in general were all very pleasant. Unfortunately the food was not. We each had the "Second Street" breakfast-- very standard combination of eggs/meat/potato/choice of pancake or french toast, etc. I could go into detail about each item but the best way to review the food I think is to say you could easily make better tasting, better quality fare at home. Reminiscent of cafeteria style, bland, unimpressive preparation. Including lack of flavor. Sysco and GFS products abound. There are other places in GR that use such products and can elevate them/make them taste delicious, really-- but it seemed to me that there was no passion behind the kitchen here, or intention to do anything but cook up the low quality products and simply mound them on a plate together. Perhaps the Polish dishes and other specialties provide a better experience here- but breakfast was not delicious and I cannot see a reason to return.

We went in for brunch on a Saturday and had a great experience! There was about a 20min wait, but we were able to order coffee while we waited which was awesome. The food was terrific and well priced and the service was great. Our waitress was very friendly, coffee and water were always refilled quickly, and the hostess (owner?) check on us to make sure everything was perfect. I would definitely go again!

This place is crazy! So much good food and soo cheap too! I had the 7th Street, If I remember correctly. Pancakes bacon sausage eggs potatoes toast and coffee for like $8. Its a cool Cool little dinner, my go to breakfast spot in GR for sure.

Came for lunch, party of 6. Only one booth in the restaurant, luckily it was available. Excellent wait service. Much less excellent wait time. Ordered the Cuban Skillet. Was either prepared with combination of cold-prep and fresh, or was made first and sat dying in the window for 25 min while orders for rest of table were prepared. In any case, arrived at room temperature topped with cold salsa. The flavor was good and the portion large (appropriate for the 8.25 price point), but the temperature issue made it an overall unappetizing dish; I ate less than half. Other dishes from our party included the tomato+asparagus quiche which was reportedly good, but was TINY. Extremely disproportionate to my own dish, for a similar price. All in all, will not return.

I was visiting Grand Rapids, and I wanted to try some authentic Polish food. Several people recommended the Westsider Café. It is worth the visit. We arrived about 1:30PM on a Saturday and the place was packed. We had to wait 20-30 minutes, and there wasn't really space for all those waiting people in the restaurant. Servers had to walk in between standing people, etc. The outside door was opening constantly, making it chilly at the front of the restaurant. When we were finally seated, the service was good. We were able to order immediately, the server checked up on us, the server refilled coffee, etc. She was friendly. The food came within an reasonable amount of time Although somewhat loud, we could carry on a nice conversation, and the atmosphere was lively and positive. I'm a vegetarian, and there are very few Polishes dishes I could eat. We ordered three different dishes: pierogies, baked pierogies, and eggs benedict. All were excellent. The pierogies came with a side of sauerkraut, and the baked pierogies came with some sort of sweet sauerkraut on the side, which was quite tasty. The baked pierogies were especially good. Some of the meals came with red potatoes, which were fine. I tried but didn't eat the eggs benedict. Seemed fine. I was impressed by my pierogies and recommend this restaurant.

This is one of my favorite places to eat. My top picks are the pulled pork sandwich and the dill pickle soup. Also, I would highly recommend the gluten free bread. They bake it there and it is much better than any of the other bread choices that they have.

The Westsider Cafe is my favorite place to go for breakfast!!! They always have so many specials to chose from and their homemade hollandaise sauce is to die for. I put it all over my entire plate! Yum! Whenever family or friends are visiting they are always wanting/demanding my husband and I take them back here and we are happy to do so!

In August we toured Michigan for ten days, from Kalamazoo to Marquette in the UP, and the best food we found on the road the whole time was at The Westsider Café in Grand Rapids. They actually make most of their menu items and components from scratch in house, and everything we had was DE-LISH-OUS! I wish The Westsider would consider opening an Oakland, California branch of their fine, fine damn restaurant so I could eat there at least once a week. Thanks a million for the great breakfast you fed us in August, Westsiders. It really helped us on our way.

  • Ben B.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I worked at a top notch breakfast restaurant for 5 years. That being said, the Westsider is the best breakfast in Grand Rapids. What a value! a ton of hot delicious food for an unbeatable price. The cuban and polish fare is exceptional. Some of the platters are sure to be going home with you. They have a few tables outdoors which is nice in the summer, especially if you're a smoker. With the recently established drug policy in Grand Rapids, there are few greater pleasures than a spliff with your morning coffee and breakfast. Service is always friendly, all be it a bit slow at times. Who cares! Don't come to a restaurant in a hurry in the first place, or prepare to be dissappointed. The owner has always taken care of me. As with any restaurant, ask for suggestions from your server, they almost always know better then you do.

I live right around the corner from here and eat breakfast there often. I haven't had lunch there in a long time, but remember it being good. Their breakfast is the best you'll ever have. Get there early on weekends or you'll be waiting for table for a bit. It's a popular place! Prices are very very reasonable too!

After moving to the area, almost everyone in the neighborhood that I have met, has told me to hit this place up. Met my two brothers for lunch here. Polish neighborhood, and plenty of polish fare here. Tried the Polish Combination/plate, and it. Was. Delicious. Prompt friendly service, quick on the refills, and smiled to boot. Oh, try the dill pickle soup! Actually pretty good.

  • Aja W.

The only negative thing I could possibly say about this place is that the waitresses aren't too prompt on the coffee refills. Aside from that, it's delicious, consistent, and one of my favorite cafe/diners. The table turnover is steady. I've never waited more than ten minutes. Order the Polish Plate. Order it and deliver it to my house. Sooner than later would be preferred.

What a great meal! We enjoyed the Polish sampler platter this past Saturday brunch time. Your restaurant was chock full! Your service was excellent! Thank you for having a box of 64 crayons to delight our grandchildren , more than you know! We all will be returning as soon as possible! Very authentic Polish cuisine! Your Kapusta and Pierogies were so so tasty !

In town visiting a good friend and he suggested we come here. It was some of the best breakfast I have had in a long time. I ordered the 12th street breakfast (huevos rancheros) and the pork was amazing! My hubby has the breakfast special a southwest eggs Benedict. The potatoes with his rocked (I snuck a few from him!). My friend had the BLT which he said was perfect! Good service and good food stop in and eat up!! I can not RAVE enough about how good this place was! Even if there is a wait you should do it because you won't regret it!!
