I wish this place was closer to my house. I'm glad they expanded so the wait is not quite as bad as what it used to be. I usually order pancakes or french toast and sausage and I've never been disappointed.

Have been here a few times. Food/portions were good. Got a long black hair in my food last visit. The waitress pulled the hair out, said "sorry" and walked away. She came back and offered a replacement meal. I politely declined and haven't been back since.

The food is great, but the staff is annoyingly aggressive about not seating you, and placing you at the bottom of the waiting list, if you happen to arrive five minutes before the person you are meeting. Great restaurant which I have visited many times and the food is always delicious. My wife always gets the banana foster french toast. I usually get an omelet. The food is always brought out quickly and is very flavorful. One of my favorite breakfast locations in GR. Just be sure to bring cash as they do not take credit cards.

The omelettes are HUGE (pay the split fee, so you don't end up feeling guilty by only eating a fraction of it), and the pancakes are fluffy and delicious. The Tuesday morning is a nice pancake/egg/bacon combo breakfast. Don't be deterred by the description of "mini" pancakes - they are still bigger than anyone can finish for breakfast. The wait can be daunting, so if you arrive starving, you will not be pleased. Enjoy the craziness. Next time, I'm leaving with a slice of pie to go - mmmmmm.

My boyfriend and I were in town visiting Founders Brewing from Chicago. We were looking for a good breakfast/brunch spot on a Sunday morning and Yelp did not disappoint! He had the biscuits and gravy and I had the Monte Cristo sandwich...delish! We highly recommend this spot!

My first choice for breakfast in Grand Rapids. Lots of menu choices. Delicious, fluffy pancakes (which are ENORMOUS), friendly wait staff, cheery atmosphere. So many menu options! Take the other reviewers' advice and split a portion unless you're monstrously hungry. They make a yogurt parfait with vanilla yogurt, homemade granola, and fresh strawberries which is AMAZING. It's cramped, it's crowded, there is often a long wait... but I LOVE it!

Quickly becoming my new favorite in Grand Rapids for breakfast or brunch. On a Sunday at noon, the wait was short, the food was quick and tasty, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. While the food isn't going to win any awards for presentation, that's not what you're here for. It is, as the name suggests, Real Food..., satisfying, soulful, and served in a timely manner. My only suggestion for improvement is the dire need for a POS system.

I am a little annoyed right now. My fiance and I have been planning a trip to Grand Rapids for about 2 months. We do not have a lot of money so I have been planning everything in absolute detail from location, ratings, price, etc. However, we do not want to go to crap dives or pay top-dollar for mediocre food. So I JUST called Real Food Cafe after reading great review after great review and I am not happy. I know I am a tough critic for bad service, but I haven't even entered the doors yet and I'm already upset. My fiance is a sous-chef so I have been a bit spoiled when it comes to good food but his best dish (the one that made me fall for him) is his homemade Eggs Benedict. We have been searching everywhere for a good Eggs Benedict that serves REAL Hollandaise...that means no sauce packets or mayonnaise, I mean rich and buttery egg yolks, clarified butter, chicken stock..the good stuff. So I called to ask if they make their sauce fresh without the short cuts and briefly explained why I was asking in the nicest way possible. His response was "I can't get into it right now, I'm busy." It's too bad they pushed away a customer before even entering..

Love it! By far the best breakfast place in town. Good - no great food. Weekend mornings be prepared to wait, but the wait isn't as bad now that they've expanded the interior - and is totally worth it. Love that I can create my own scramble, and the portion sizes are HUGE! Once you do get seated the service is really quick and always friendly. Awesome local place. Love, love, love!

Perhaps one of the great jems of the Alger Heights area, my wife and I love this place. We have to make ourselves walk to it because the food is so good and need to burn off the calories. Delicious home-cooked breakfast! The portions are very generous, so plan on sharing ($1 fee) or leftovers. The menu ranges from the typical breakfast (eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast, etc.) to some more unique selections (white chocolate blueberry pancakes, various scrambles). Be prepared to wait (think of the cramped nature as part of the charm) and bring check/cash, as they don't accept credit cards.

great food! great service! great pancakes! great potatoes! great coffee! i ordered the veggie hash (or whatever they call it), and it was delish. it's really cramped at the real food cafe, though, so i'd recommend calling in your order, picking it up and taking it home. we went at about 1pm on a wednesday, and it was packed. i can't even imagine how busy this place would be after church hours on a sunday morning. and they're only open for like 8 minutes a day. what's the deal on that? best breakfast in grand rapids, hands down.

This small resturant is on Eastern and Alger. It's only open for breakfast and lunch but I have to say...best food ever. If you go there, make sure you are just hitting the verge of starvation becuase you will have to wait and once you get your food you are going to attempt to eat it all. [you will fail...their portions are very gererous!] You will have to wait some time for a seat. It's a small place...but extremely popular. Only bring cash or check. They don't take credit cards.

I only had time for one meal in Grand Rapids. I gambled on Real Food Cafe for breakfast and WON! Frank and the wonderfully friendly waitstaff deliver a pitch perfect breakfast experience. I ordered the homemade biscuits and gravy and to my delight watched him prepare an individual skillet of THE best gravy. The biscuits were just as outstanding. Frank's wife is a killer baker, too, and I left there with an amazing slice of cake and frosted pumpkin cookies to die for. I wish I could go back!

Probably my favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. HUGE menu, anything you can think of for breakfast and if you can slap it between two slices of bread, they have it. Good size portions, tons of unique flavor, and not too bad on the pocketbook. The only thing that ever turned me off to this place is the size, and now that has been taken care of. They took over the adjoining business and basically doubled their square footage. Now it doesn't feel like your being suffocated while you eat!! Its always a wait to be seated, and at least now you have a place to stand. Before you were pretty much on top of one another. If you ever watch diners/dives/and drive ins, this place was made for that show. All their meals are made with a little love, and they all have a unique flair that can't be matched at an IHOP. Check this place out!!!! P.S. Bring cash, they don't take credit.

My husband and I were lucky enough to hear about this fabulous cafe so this morning we thought we'd give it a try. I had the Monte Cristo and my husband had the monster quesadilla .We loved both of them!! It was packed when we got there at around 1:00 but we found a seat at the counter and that was perfect. We got to see all the food come out and now we know what we will order next time. Great food and very friendly service...What a find !

Giving 2 stars because I don't get the hype. It's just an average breakfast restaurant. It was busy and there is nowhere to stand so the servers keep bumping into you and it was hard to manage little kids. Also server wasn't friendly. Probably won't go back.

This place was acceptable, but the coffee was really watered down and weak. The breakfast food was pretty good, but the service was only mediocre. Coffee refills for me were quick, but the server was not so quick to refills others coffee. She also forgot part of my order (breakfast fries), which was ok because I probably couldn't have eaten them anyway. Also, this place doesn't take credit or debit, but they have an ATM in the back. Not really a huge fan of this place, the food was OK, the service was less than good, and there are better places out there.

I thought this was a rather good breakfast joint; definitely had a 1950s diner feeling to it. It was extremely busy, but luckily I grabbed a counter stool and didn't wait more than a few minutes. I am confused, very confused, as to how one person complained on here about the coffee being awful. The coffee was fantastic. I appreciate really good coffee (think Madcap, Rowster's fair trade organic brews) - I think that reviewer may prefer watery weak traditionally American coffee; the coffee at Real Food was very delicious. My two complaints: "real food" leads you to believe they have intensely healthy options or organic options- nope. Also, the waitress working forgot to refill my coffee despite asking her twice. When I did get my refill I was heading out the door pretty much. I still tipped her 20%+ because the place was INTENSELY crowded, and I can appreciate how much work it must be to do that job. The eggs benedict was superb, my only complaint was that the Hollandaise sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking, they need to decrease the sweetness - I don't like sweet in my food unless it's supposed to be a sweet dish. I can't fathom the logic behind people complaining their potato hash was bland. It's potato hash! What do you expect? You're supposed to sop up your eggs benedict with it, and I did. It was delicious.

Solid 4 star joint. A very homie feel, and unlike some other low key breakfast joints, you're not sacrificing food quality for the sake of familiarity and hospitality. Ultra friendly staff who still made time to chat amidst the Sunday morning rush. I had an omelet with the works and it was terrific. All the ingredients screamed fresh, and indeed my server said they get them locally. Lots of cool menu items I'd love to try. The cinnamon rolls and pastries on display looked great, but the omelet was pretty big, so I passed. I'm not familiar with the area, but it's about a mile off the main drag with all the chain restaurants, so Real Food Cafe seems like a no-brainer if you're in the area.

Awesome fairly priced breakfast/ lunch on the southeast side ummm yea! Really close to home for me so my first pick hangover spot. Quite a few vegetarian options and several other dishes you can get meat removed. The veggie hash is awesome - spinich, onion, mushroom, roasted red peppers, home fries and eggs -yum! You can have breakfast for 2 for $20-30 which i love.

Yelp led us astray this time. Coffee was just awful. Tasted like ash. Hollandaise sauce was too sweet. Veggie hash was just kind of bland. Home fries had no character and just tasted like a steamed potato. It's worth saying twice. The coffee was dreadful. No credit cards. I get it, but damn that is an annoying thing to deal with nowadays. Acoustics in this place create an awful din. You can hear every table's conversation simultaneously. Server and staff were very pleasant.

We got lucky and went at around 8:30am, which apparently is about thirty minutes before their rush starts. We waited about fifteen minutes for a table, which wasnt bad, and after that it all went uphill. The hot chocolate is served at a perfect temperature so you can drink it straightaway, and all of the stuff are very nice, despite the busy-ness. The portions are HUGE. I could eat half of my breakfast burrito, and I was starving before I got there. Definitely coming back. Make sure you bring cash though, they don't take cards.

This is by far my favorite breakfast restaurant! I currently live in Chicago, but I still visit Grand Rapids and have to stop by here whenever I'm in town. It has a great atmosphere and the servers are always cheerful and friendly (even when it's very early in the morning). This place is very popular so it can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends, so don't be surprised if you have to wait for a bit. But it is definitely worth it! I recommend the omelettes and the almond joy pancakes.

Ordered sausage and biscuits. Tasted fine, but turned over the biscuit and it was blue! Looked like mold, sent it back, and waitress returned with the plate stating that it was blueberry juice. What is blueberry juice doing on the bottom of a sausage and biscuit dish? Very unappetizing. The waitress offered no apology, no offer to make it right. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy! Breakfast should not be that complicated. Will not return.

Me and my wife where driving around Grand Rapids and decided to get some breakfast. This place is very nice and the proportion sizes are more than enough. The menu has a huge variety of stuff maybe even two huge. The only tip I can give is to sit closer to the diner because the other section seems like you're away from the action. Awesome place.

It was made fresh there to order which is a plus for me. I hate old reheated diner food. That's really all this was though is diner food. Nothing amazing but good. The wait staff seemed bored. Our waitress had very little personality to speak of. She was nice but kind of boring. I don't recall her ever smiling. No big deal in the grand scheme of things but still, look happy to be alive on such a beautiful day! Lol The atmosphere and decor was old but clean. This place is well kept. The regulars there appear to be of the older generation which is fine. Regulars keep a place in business so I can appreciate that. Overall this place was good an I'd go back. The price was decent for the food and service we got.

I have had breakfast and lunch here hundreds of times. The food is excellent and I have never had a better breakfast. I suggest you try the carmel walnut apple pie, it is the best you will ever taste. Yum! I love the real food cafe, service is always great and the food can't be beat.

Pricier than wolfgang's, but delicious! I had the loaded pancake: bacon, sausage and onions mixed into package batter, cooked into a huge, marvelous, blissful creation. It's served with eggs on top. I could not eat for the rest of the day. It gets very packed in the morning, so don't sleep in!

After a failed attempt to eat here in March I was finally afforded the opportunity to dine at Real Food Café this weekend. I found this place on Yelp as we were in search of breakfast on our way to Grand Rapids. All the reviews were absolutely incredible so we had to eat there right? Well, we tried. We were in a bit of a hurry and the wait was long so we had to cut out and get food elsewhere. I can see why the wait was tremendous now that I have eaten there. Holy crap this is probably the best breakfast I have ever had. Everything is fresh and the portions are ENORMOUS! The four people at our table each ordered a different item and we all shared and all of it was the cat's pajamas. My Irish Benedict with homemade hollandaise would have left me wanting more but lord knows I couldn't have shoved another bite in my big fat mouth because the dish was the size of a ream of paper. The star of the meal was the bananas foster french toast. I had a few bites and each one was better than 10,000 orgasms. Get this if you come here. The service was a little slow but for food as good as Real Food Café has and as busy as they are I can't even knock them for it.

I came what you come to the Real Food Cafe for; breakfast on a Saturday morning! As soon as you're in the door this place feels like a local joint, a little secret Grand Rapidians keep to themselves. It place is absolutely jammed and buzzing with the sound of conversation and good food being had. The decour is nothing flash, which suits the cafe completely. It's busy and the staff are very friendly, calm (seemingly well used to the chaos) and quick. Coffee it is and blueberry pancakes. Before we know it the dishes our before us. The food is delicious and plentiful and the price very reasonable. I think at least once a month you need to just pig out and satisfy your need for a big breakfast. I should have ordered bacon with my pancakes. Other people with me order eggs benedict and omelets. A fun place, a place to catch up with friends and hear the news over delicious, hearty food. A high recommendation.

Real Food is the standard by which I judge all other breakfasts. Their menu is the perfect size - big enough to be exciting and slightly challenging to pick from, but small enough to trust that they're not trying to be experts in everything. Once you do choose from the menu, make sure the special isn't what you REALLY wanted, because they're always trying out something new and exciting there. The gyro scramble is something I'm still holding out to be put on the menu! The service has always been great, and I've been to Real Food WAY more times than I can count. I'm actually surprised to see the negative reviews for service on here. What I also love is the cheery atmosphere of the place - bright colors and colorful plates and mugs make the usually beige-breakfast food fun and happy. Their food is really the star here - everything is made from scratch, and it's obvious - yes, even the hollandaise! Their red pepper hollandaise on the veggie Benedict is just to die for. Their potatoes are great (although they're the best when Frank - the owner - makes them) and the veggies and fruit are always fresh. Also, treat yourself to a scone or cinnamon roll to go some morning - you'll be too stuffed to eat it after breakfast, but around 3PM you'll thank me.

I used to be one of those people who would say breakfast is breakfast until I came to real food cafe. This is the best breakfast place in Grand Rapids. You can tell because its usually always packed. If there is a wait its well worth it. Fresh baked good are awesome if that's your thing. I tend to order a little of everything because I know it will be good.

But I found the food to be really so so :( I wanted to like it more and I was even referred to RFC by at least three people for the best breakfast food in Grand Rapids. My table had the Irish Benedict, a blueberry pancake, and the breakfast monte cristo. The monte cristo was the star of the show, but I think maybe it needs to be renamed a "french toast sandwich." It wasn't deep fried (which I was thankful for because whoa, that would be a heavy breakfast), but more like battered, then pan fried. The blueberry pancake was alright, nothing special. The English muffin on the benedict needed to be toasted more and it came with a huge pile of boiled, smashed potatoes. The potatoes desperately needed to be seared on a griddle to add some texture in there. Because of the overwhelming recommendations for this place, maybe it's just me. But you should go and decide for yourself. For the food I would probably have given two stars, but the service ups it to three. Another thing to note is that there is a huge parking lot behind the restaurant if there isn't anything in front on the street.

Neighborhood diner with charm, hospitality and home cookin' dishes. This review is a long time coming as this diner is a popular, long-standing hidden gem in the Alger Heights neighborhood. We stopped in this Sunday at around 10 am and was pleased to see a minimal line; apparently the church crowd hadn't gotten out yet. We added our name to the list to wait but noticed that 3 seats at the first come first serve counter seats, so we grabbed those. Our friendly server appeared quickly and we ordered coffees and breakfasts from the expansive breakfast/brunch menu. We ordered two plates of biscuits and gravy and the daily special, the Lemon Blueberry Waffle. A Belgium waffle topped with lemon cream cheese, blueberries, and strudel crumble was an indulgent, filling and rich start to my Sunday! The portion size was huge and I took some home, in fact, we took some the biscuits and gravy home as well. Just remember- it's cash only here and they have an ATM if you need to take some out.

Summary: expect to wait at least 15 minutes on a weekend, they only take cash, and tip your server well. They move quickly! Also, get the Nutella stuffed French toast. Details: We like to order one sweet dish and one savory dish at breakfast places, so I ended up with the Nutella stuffed French toast and he got an omelette. My French toast was the winner, hands down. Two pieces of thick French toast, practically glued together with Nutella, topped with sliced bananas, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup. The omelette was full of veggies (which was a plus), and it was delicious, but couldn't compete with the French toast. If we lived in the area, we'd be there again soon.

CASH ONLY. Great place for breakfast. Portions are large. Service was fast and the turn over for breakfast only had us waiting a few minutes. During this trip having a car to be able to get away from downtown to eat at local places during the conference was a winner!! The family loved everything served. The staff was very friendly and the place was pleasant to be in. I had the new cinnamon roll pancakes - very delicious. The cinnamon rolls are massive. We would have never found his place had it not been for Yelp. It is in a small strip mall and is easy to miss. They only take cash, but there is an ATM there so we were saved! There was a wait - always a good sign, and we were seated within 10 minutes. I had the veggie hash and my husband had the Irish Benedict. He said it was the best corn beef he's ever had. Mine was very good, but a HUGE portion. We are traveling so I couldn't take the leftovers. :( The ambience is charming. It has a 1950's decor with a lot of seating and a nice sized waiting area. There is coffee to get while you wait.

Ate here for breakfast twice during a three day stay in the Grand Rapids area. Both visits were impressive and of course, the first visit caused the second one. Good service and above average food. For example the bacon served here is applewood smoked and the offer a great selection of omelets as well as the custom option. There can be a wait due to the quality of the meals but they have a large waiting area in front. It is worth the wait-next time I will try the lunches here and update the review if necessary.

Pretty solid breakfast, but the wait was kind of brutal. Honestly, the waiting area definitely rivaled the dining area. The set up kind of felt a little DMV-ish, but they kindly offer free coffee whilst waiting. Nonetheless, I would prefer to avoid this place on weekend mornings. Friendly wait staff and a stellar selection of unique breakfast foods! Beware though: no booze.

We went on a Saturday morning and waited about 15-20 minutes. The place was packed! Once we were sat, we got out menus which were crammed with everything under the sun. I've often heard that with a large menu, the food typically suffers. However, that isn't the case here! I ordered a seasonal special, gingerbread french toast, and it was superb. We ordered a side of potatoes to share, and they were also crazy flavorful. All in all, it's a little hectic in there, but I take that to mean Real Food is well loved--and I now can see why. What a great little joint!

Eggs were perfectly cooked! The home fries were also, and didn't need anything added (ketchup, hot sauce, etc.). I also order a single cherry pecan pancake, and it was so good that I didn't need to add the syrup the waitress brought to the table. I wish I could have eaten more because it was so delicious. This would be considered one of the great greasy spoons in the Grand Rapids area!!

I absolutely loved this place. First of all, you must understand a few things. I'm vegetarian, a college student, love to eat, love a huge menu selection - but I like my food fresh and healthy. Usually I don't fare so well at breakfast places. However, this place surprised me with so many veggie-friendly options, huge portions sizes, friendly waitstaff, the whole kaboodle. You get what they advertise for sure: real food! Definitely going back for the skillets, the nutella waffles, and Belgium waffles. Bottom line: Go try it. Mind over matter, food over mind.

I recently went to Real Food Cafe with a friend for breakfast. I was amazed when I walked in the door. I was not expecting such a large place. The vintage decor was a personal favorite. Everything we had was amazing, but the potatoes were legendary. My friend and I refer to them as "crack potatoes". I've never met a potato I didn't like, but these are now the standard by which all breakfast potatoes will be measured. The service was friendly and the food top notch. Real Food Cafe does not disappoint.

The only real negative I have is that the waitress didn't refill my coffee until I asked and it took a while, when she brought it the pot was empty so she said oh I'll get more! I live in the neighborhood and this place is a favorite. Can be jam packed but they get tables in and out quickly. Usually I'll take a seat at the bar stools to watch the action behind the counter. Have never ordered anything that I was disappointed in except the bacon.....for me it was over done but that's a small complaint when you have a place who can properly poach eggs and makes adorable pancakes when you bring your kids in. They care about there customers and it shows. The goodies they have available to purchase including various pies, cookies and dessert bars are fantastic and always changing. The cinnamon rolls are monsterous!!! My favorite thing to get here has to be the vegetarian eggs Benedict. Two poached eggs served over top a bed of spinach mushrooms and tomato with an English muffin and homefries. This delicious concoction is then topped with a roasted red pepper hollandaise. Perfection at its finest for a more sophisticated breakfast. Very filling as well. I always end up bringing some home as it's such a hearty meal.

Grand Rapids has about a zillion breakfast/brunch spots. A lot of them are really friggin' awesome. And this one is definitely no exception. In my opinion, this one is actually top of the heap. Upon approaching Real Food Cafe on Eastern I was wondering where to park... street parking is minimal, but there is ample parking in the rear (*snickers*) and you can make your way to the "hostess stand" from there. Really, if Yelp could do half stars, this place would be a solid 4.5 or even 4.75. While the restaurant may be crowded and a bit compact in spots, the food is definitely worth the minimal hassle you might experience while navigating your way through. Due to its business, please be aware there may be a way for you to get a table... use the sign-in sheet at the front of the restaurant by writing your name and number in your party. When I went the wait expected was 15-20 minutes, and I was seated in less than 10. So, not bad at all. This crew knows how to turn people over to free up tables. At the same time, when it came time for the bill and to pay, I didn't feel rushed or hurried out the door. They've really managed to strike a good balance. Overall ambiance of the restaurant is very... diner-esque. I dig it. While it's definitely not ugly or anything, the name of the game here is clearly function over form. The real stuff you'll be looking at anyway will be everyone's food that's sitting around you or as you walk past them. Because it all looks AH-MAZE-ZING. There's a great reason the food looks so good. Because it is. It really friggin' is. The day I went there was a special called "Cuban Eggs Benedict" (or something like that) which was killer. English muffins topped with pulled pork, Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and smothered in a delicious hot mustard hollandaise sauce. Potato has was served on the side. I definitely appreciate a place like RFC that has the standards (pancakes, eggs and toast, etc.) while also providing inspired takes on traditional things also. I couldn't help but notice there was also an Irish Eggs Benedict on the regular menu... I know what I'm getting next time. There are two things that are worth noting about RFC. One is not bad or good... the other is a great irritant of mine. First, the coffee, while delicious, has a certain odor about it. I wish I was trying to be funny but I'm not... it kinda smells like weed. Maybe something odd was going on, I didn't feel any different after drinking it, but the aroma was there. My irritant though... CASH or LOCAL CHECKS ONLY. Seriously? There is an ATM in the back, but there's no excuse for a place such as this to not take credit/debit cards in this day and age. Especially a business that's obviously doing well enough to have more than one location. I can tell by the number of diners there that they're definitely not struggling... spring for the credit card machine, please, guys. Will I be back? You better goshdang believe it. Like I said before, I think, this place beats out all those other breakfast spots in GR. This is a MUST-VISIT for an awesome, delicious breakfast.

I ordered the special which was a beef burger hollandaise. I haven't had a hollandaise in a while so I thought what the hell. We sat at the counter to bypass the line which is a pain most times since they don't have much space.....yet It looks like they're only weeks away from opening the expansion into the space next door. This will be a welcome addition since it gets pretty cramped in there quick - especially on the weekends. Service is great this day as it usually is with food flying out of the pass. My meal arrived with light speed, approx 7 mins, and had a great presentation. (see pic) I'm sorry to say that I was a little disappointed with the taste. Now before you start thinking "Well it brunch what do you want" - if you're going to serve ground meat - SEASON IT!!! The hollandaise was obviously packaged since it had a slight grit texture and lacked depth of flavor. The egg was cooked perfectly and its creamy center coated my meat wonderfully. Generous amounts of salt and pepper were required to amp out any sort of flavor depth. Onions and spinach were fresh and tasty. The potatoes, of course, were perfect - as they usually are. Overall the special this day was a bit of a let down but I will return as I've had better experiences at Real Food before I started Yelping!

They also just expanded their seating in late 2012 so there's a bit more room.

In Grand Rapids for the weekend and I used yelp! for recommendations for breakfast. Came across this place and I have to say, I otherwise would never have considered it. It's situated in a little strip center but don't judge a book by its cover. First of all, it was jumping in there at about 11 on a Sunday morning...that's usually a great sign. When we were seated we watched as these huge orders of French toast, omelets, pancakes, scrambles, were being carried to various tables. My mouth started watering. I ordered a traditional breakfast with the theory that if they did that well, the unique menu items would be good too. Well, so far so good. Sausage, eggs and pancakes...check. I'm looking forward to trying one if the scrambles next time I'm back.

New Favorite Breakfast Spot!! The food here is just so good, my husband and I have been finding excuses to drive to this side of town on Saturday mornings. We've gone 3 times in 6 weeks. lol Everything on the menu sounds so good, you think you know what you want and then some new great looking (and smelling) food gets walked past your table on it's way to hungry patrons. Then you want that! Or the server describes all the wonderful specials that have changed every time we are there. All the scrambles are available as omelette's and vice versa, the waffles are light and fluffy and the service is super quick. If you sit on the side that has the "kitchen", it's amazing to watch the efficient staff practically thrown the food out. The servers can hardly keep up! The turnaround at this place is amazing. You walk in and write your name down on a sheet of paper, there is no host, and the waitress calls your name as soon as they have an open table in their section. Husband loves the Breakfast burrito with Home fries and I can't get past the Baccado Omelet (bacon, cheese, avocado, salsa and sour cream) but the Healthy Start Waffle (waffle with yogurt, granola and fresh fruit) is very good as well.

Baller. This place has a fantastic breakfast menu. I have no idea what it has for lunch because I never got that far. My mom and I dined here over the holiday and we split the west side hash and the fancy ass raspberry white chocolate stuffed french toast. Both items came with a TON of food. Definitely some to take home. In fact, the stuffed french toast warmed up very nicely in the oven and the bread part was still even a little bit crispy and not at all soggy. Perfect-o. The french toast comes as two "sandwiches" with raspberry cream cheese (maybe a little more than necessary) as the filling in each "sandwich." the top is drizzled with raspberry and white chocolate sauces. Totally delish. Helped me fill out my fat pants a little, too. The west side hash was also fantastic, I think thats the one that has kielbasa in it (best choice EVER). And the best part was the little ol' lady who was giving coffee refills who stopped to chat with us and tell us about how she knew the owner (manning the grill station) since he was in diapers and used to babysit him. She was SO adorable and so funny. I'd probably visit here again just to hear her tell some more stories. Also awesome: everyone else dining was super nice. The guy on our right was a regular who chatted with us a bit and the two guys on the left were a couple of college students whose eyes fell out of their skulls when they saw my french toast hit the table. And and and... we didn't have to wait for a table, which was seriously awesome. Extra bonus points. And... there is a parking lot in back of the building so you don't have to street park!

Came here after church on Sunday, I was really hungry and wanted a good brunch place. I was afraid of a long wait, but when we got there we only wait 15 minutes for our table, which is great! This place has an amazing corn beef hash. Their breakfast menu kicks BUTT! I love how after a full meal you don't feel tired or bloated like other breakfast places in town, whatever they use in their food makes me feel great. I guess thats why they call it "real food". Ok food....worst service I have ever had. My wife and I had the Garden Omelet with a bowl of fresh fruit. Fruit bowl was good. Omelet was decent but nothing to write home about. The avocado was brown and tasted like it was coated with lemon juice. Coffee was OK... Would have had another cup if it was offered. Food was 3 stars and the only reason this received is not a 1 star. Now on to the service. I don't know her name because it was never told to us. First we sat down. 5 mins later coffee order. No spoon or silverware on table or offered. We had to chase down the server to ask for silverware. Then, we sat with our menu closed for 5 minutes after that. Watched the server continually walk by and stare down my wife. Finally ordered. The server had a disgusted look on her face and a bad attitude as I ordered. Everyone has a bad day but she was actively being rude. Our food came fairly quick. We watched our server make small tall with the tables around us then turn and roll her eyes. We never received coffee refills. Finally after pre-bussing the table for her, we sat....and sat.... After 10 minutes, we got up to chase her sown again for the check. More attitude. My wife and I have about 7 years of serving experience between us, and we were simply in awe of how bad she was. What a shame.

Walk in, eat, back out. This place is small, and you might have to wait, but it's so worth it in the end. Everything is delicious and mostly homemade. The specials are usually where it's at. Something unique and different every time and always delicious. The atmosphere is fun and most people I take in there make some Diners, Drive-ins and Dives comment. Breakfast is phenomenal and lunch is just as delicious. Their cookies and cakes are a must have in a to go bag. After reading all the great reviews I was looking forward to a great brunch. After waiting about 20 minutes which was fine we were seated. Here is the good part of the review - the chocolate chip pancakes are very good - I highly recommend them. My daughter lucked out. Unfortunately, everything else was poor. I got the vegetarian hash and my wife got the italian frittata (vegetarian) and a side of home fries. We are vegetarians but I would not say we are militant about it however when in the vegetarian frittata we find a piece of bacon and the potatoes taste of bacon it was not appealing to us. We asked the waitress about the potatoes who then said they are basically cooked in bacon grease right next to the bacon on the grill. I stopped eating meat a year ago so know well the taste of bacon and many of you reading this will be excited about bacon grease potatoes but when ordering vegetarian I wasnt that excited about it. Now I didnt need a hug or for the manager to come over and comfort me but a sincere apology would have been nice. Instead the waitress didn't seem bothered and no manager came over even to offer a simple sorry. The waitress did take my hash and the side of potatoes off the bill. They re made my wifes frittata and it was just OK tasting. Worst of all having been up since 6 and getting my first coffee here at 10.20am my coffee never got refilled apart from a quick top up 1 minute after it was first poured. So after reading good reviews and looking forward to a tasty brunch it was pretty disappointing. They were busy and happy to keep turning the tables but showing some sincere interest in their customers would have taken a couple of seconds and would have gone a long way.

I would give Real Food a 4.5 if I could. I went for Sunday brunch. The place was busy and on a wait but I was lucky to get a spot at the counter pretty quickly. The cooks were working like a well oiled machine; Great communication and pace. They had it all worked out for optimal efficiency. And the expeditor at the window helped move food through and also provided another check to make sure the order was correct. Everything looked and smelled amazing. I had a tough time deciding between their smoked chicken breakfast skillet, the Irish Benedict, and the Monte Cristo. That said, I ordered the monte cristo. I could see that whatever I ordered was going to be a nice treat and I wanted to try their French toast. I also ordered a side of their housemade sausage patties. My food was served in under 10 minutes and it was delicious. The monte cristo consisted of applewood smoked bacon and over easy eggs nestled between two pieces of vanilla and cinnamon sweet French toast dusted with powdered sugar. I drizzled a little syrup on top and went at it with a knife and fork. No trouble putting that one away. The sausage patties were also phenomenal. I will definitely be back. The only reason I didn't score it a 5 is because it was so busy it was almost too tight. I was shoulder to shoulder with people next to me at the counter. I felt as if we all needed a little more space. Not a big deal.

Really solid brunch place in a city that seems to have a surplus of phenomenal brunch joints. Very crowded on the weekends, but the wait is worth it. I've never had to wait over 15 minutes. My favorite is the breakfast monte cristo sandwich and the northland scramble. A little inconvenient that they only take cash only (ATM is located in the back).

I want to start with saying that I only review a place's food, not their service because I do like to go to divey, classy and casual places, I usually just take the service unless it is awful. This place is okay, and if I did judge on service I MIGHT give it a four for one main reason: I HATE it when a restaurant brings out one persons plate several minutes before they bring out their dining companions plate. This has happened to me at the Real Food Cafe every time I've been there. I took my mom here when she came to visit and she ordered the biscuits and gravy (which she LOVED). But, a few minutes after we ordered two other people came in, while we were waiting we overheard one of them (the tables are close, it is hard not to) order the same thing as my mom. They brought me my food and did not bring out my moms. I found that annoying but worse yet was that they brought the person next to us an order of biscuits and gravy before they gave my mom her order. rather than acknowledging they had obviously made a mistake she just told us it would be a few minutes still. It took a very long time and I began to complain. at this they gave my mom a muffin on the house. that was nice, but they were not very apologetic. The last time I was there with my boyfriend they again brought out his food several minutes before they brought out mine. and it seemed like i was annoying our server when i asked for more water. on the other hand, the food is excellent. It's the best omelette I've had in Grand Rapids, and maybe the second or third best omelette I've ever had. My mom really loved her biscuits and gravy so despite the wait she said it was worth it. and my boyfriend really loves all the different kinds of pancakes. be warned that the almond joy pancakes are like a dessert not a breakfast!

We stopped into Real Food for lunch. It was my first visit and the minute I walked in the door I was drawn to the unbelievable desserts that are on display. The menu is large and I decided on the soup and sandwich. The vegetarian black bean soup was delicious. I would have loved a dollop of sour cream but the flavor was perfect. The half sandwich was a chicken salad on some beautiful dark bread with uber fresh lettuce, tomato and Swiss. The coconut cake was perfect and huge. I will definitely go back

Everything on point! Open kitchen setting. Feels like a diner out of a movie set. Always busy. Great portions. Fresh and fulfilling! Will never settle for Denny's or ihop breakfast again.

Great food! Wait wasn't bad at all. Bacon was crisp and the blueberry white chocolate chip pancakes were delicious. Definitely will be coming back!
