We had a wonderful experience here! My husband and I came here for a romantic dinner on a Thursday and they had live Jazz, which was charming. Beautiful decor and original woodwork from this big old house. Our server did a great job. Cocktails were just-right. Our food was *excellent*! We both had rather traditional dishes, but this chef made them into delicious new meals, adding tasty sauces and unique ingredients & spices to bring out new flavors. Everything was top notch. Great selection of meatless options. We were very happy with this restaurant. We'll go back again to try some of the other dishes that peaked our interest.

Hmmmmmmmm, where do I start. The atmosphere was nice our waiter was good but stretched thin do to a table of 14 and another 2 top. Our timing with the restaurant gods tonight must have been off do to the constant waiting for our server that was being held up by the large table as we watched others on the wait staff with just a couple tables standing around. The app of glazed brussel sprouts was wonderful as I am still burping it up 3 hours later. We wanted abt 45 min for our food to come out to us. we got a pizza and seafood linguini. Both of which were cold. Sorry cold seafood isn't a great thing as my body has learned unless it's sushi. We brought it to our waiters attention and brought it back to the kitchen. After abt 15 min our food was back. Hmmmmmm your thinking how does one make a pizza and a full seafood dinner plate with pasta in 15 min, right? Wrong it was tossed in the microwave and brought back to us and told it was put back in the oven. Really, if a pizza was but back in the oven would have been nice and crispy. Not this soggy mess. Don't lie to me like I have no clue abt how to cook. I'm sorry mangiamo you are not what everyone has said about you. You are just another Gilmore corp restaurant with microwaved food. The saddest part of this is that you will never fill the shoes of the previous restaurant you took over.

Great experience here. I really like the building itself. It's an old house from 1800's that has been remolded. It's 18,000 sq ft from what the manager told me. The staff was vet friendly courteous. Whenever I travel I try to eat at places that are not "chains". The food is definitely served with a homemade likeness. I'll be back to try other things on the menu. I ordered Lasagna and even though I was hungry I couldn't finish it.

The Red Quinoa Vegetable Tower is excellent. Told it is seasonal and will be off the menu. We patron once a month and will miss the dish.

impressive facade of the building maybe led to heightened expectations of gourmet, but the food, when produced was bland, the seasoning on the home made sausage was unbalanced with way too much fennel, the $32 'fresh' fish smelled fishy, and was dry and over cooked. even the sauce was dry on top, from sitting under the heating lamp so long. broccolini was limp and tasteless. all in all the experience made for an obstacle to the evening rather than a high point.

we were in town for the marathon and the runners needed to carb up. We called and they said they were booked solid but we decided to stop by and try the bar area. Very good decision to do that. We got set up in the bar area with all the adults and kids. We still managed to make happy hour, wait happy hour on Saturday?!! yes I will take it. Kiddos had the small pizzas and we the adults ordered a handful of the apps for a great price. Although the calamari had huge pieces of garlic otherwise awesome. The spaghetti and meatballs were good. The staff was very nice and accomodating to the large party we came with. They have some local brews and wines. Plus the place is super cool with nice history behind it. Loved it.

Again, the same old Gilmore group formula - It's all about the real estate and ambiance, not about the food. Again, like a Gilmore group restaurant, the drinks are watered down with the usual formula, little booze, lots of juice. Their service was ok here, but waited 20 minutes on some garlic bread? Isn't that an easy one? I cannot say this place serves true Italian recipes. My husband's pasta tasted like boxed macaroni and white cheese. My halibut was cooked well. So far, and I've tried a ton of them, the only decent Gilmore group restaurant seems to be the Red Jet Café.

I recommend the quinoa vegetable tower and a glass of Italian white, especially if it is warm enough to enjoy it outside on the back patio. Service is decent. If you eat inside, ask for a seat on the porch or have a drink in the wood-paneled bar of the old mansion and dine in front of the fire in the dining room. Great atmosphere.

In addition to the great service and food you'll experience dining at their restaurant, they also do a stellar job with catering. As an office, we just scarfed down the burger and salad bar in no time flat. The food arrived on time and the delivery person was helpful in setting everything up for lunch. The salads were fresh and tasty, the sandwich meats were moist, bread was soft, and the thick cut potato chips were still warm upon arrival! They are a great catering option for a work lunch or party

It's hard to justify going to an Olive Garden when Mangiamo's is priced very similarly. The specials change frequently, the quality is high, and the historic mansion makes for an elegant experience.

This is why I rated this place 2 stars. The food is GREAT, as well as the atmosphere. Definitely a no-brainer 5-star rating. HOWEVER, the service is just bad bad bad....My girlfriend and I had to wait for about 5 minutes before we could even order our drinks, then our server switched her shift without telling us anything and left us there dumbfounded, until another server took over and clearly he didn't care too much about our table. Anyway, I would give this place another try next time I'm in town, and maybe I will change my rating.

The ambiance at Mangiamo is spectacular. I came here for dinner in the winter, and the rustic, wood-paneled walls made the night feel so cozy... like I was living in the old English home of a nobleman. Maybe. Anyway, the food was expertly prepared, although I felt the portions were teeny for the hefty price tag. They're obviously sourcing the highest quality ingredients, so I can't fault them 100%. But I guess I didn't feel full. Next time I will order some apps - maybe that will help. Great for large groups.

What an experience for my parent's 45th wedding anniversary! 1. Our server Amy was incredible. She managed our large (12) group without a flaw. She brought out the kid's meals as soon as they were ready and made sure they always had plenty of bread. She was just a quick with their ice cream. 2. The food. We had too many dishes to review each of them individually. There were no complaints. My sister and I had the family style ziti. The tomato sauce was great. A light, not acidic flavor with perfect, al dente cooked ziti. My daughter had the salmon with quinoa. What a combo! Light, flavorful, with great texture. 3. The overall service could not have been better. Mary, the hostess, made sure we were able to use the wine cellar for family photos. She will be the photographer of record for the portrait that will hang above my parent's fireplace. She even put up with the innocent teenage flirting from my son and nephews. The manager stopped by the table and delivered a special dessert to celebrate the occasion. 4. Cost. The dinner, with wine, was only 25% more than or Thanksgiving meal in Chicago. That meal was for four; this was for 12. I do not give five stars lightly (Just check my other reviews.) I know we'll be back the next time we're in Grand Rapids.

I am so incredibly disappointed with our latest experience. The service was absolutely terrible. After sitting for nearly 15 minutes a waiter assistant finally approached our table to tell us our actual waiter was too busy to help, but she would take our order. I sent back my drink order twice in hopes they could get it right...and finally resorted to a glass of wine instead. We asked for bread, another 15 minute wait. After our main dishes came out we never saw the "waiter assistant" again and dealt only with the busser. This could have been understandable if the restaurant was incredibly busy, however, they were not. I would not recommend this restaurant. You would probably have comparable food and better service at Carrabba's or Olive Garden.

Gotta slide Mangiamo down a star. Their Neopolitan pizza is INCREDIBLE. Five stars for that. Their service is also outstanding. But upon further review, the entrees outside of the pizza are just so-so. Order pizza and you'll have a 5-star experience.

The pasta was good here, as were the appetizers. The desserts, they were to die for! My absolute favorite place for dessert in the city!

What a beautiful place, inside and out. Made reservations for a Saturday night. We came 5 min. early and was sat promptly. I got the red quinoa add salmon was amazing. What a different taste with the corn and goat cheese! GF got the Sardinia Salmon with artichokes... Yummy as well! We shared the Goat Cheese Fondue which was a ball of cheese covered in a red tomato sauce served with toasted bread. I could taste the char in the toast!!! To die for! We also shared the tiramisu with Italian Coffee. The coffee was loaded with liquor, which is was it's supposed to be! Tiramisu was pretty much mind blowing! We liked it so much we went again on a Tuesday night without reservations. I had the veal baked ziti. Great taste, great ratio of noodles to sauce, great salad with fresh baked bread. GF got Lemongrass Chicken served with garlic risotto. Excellent dish overall, a bit on the small side. Brother got the Braised Beef. This was so visually appealing I had the buyers remorse! Mashed potatoes covered in flavor-town gravy.... I'm getting this next time! Mangiamo is so close to being a 5 star! I have to dock it one for the price... I'd make this my every night go to place if it weren't for the price!!!!

Lovely atmosphere and good food. Not sure the hostesses *get* it though, and, if they forget about you while you are in the bar waiting, be sure to speak up. (rolling eyes) That snafu was, however, followed by good service. More than anything, I just like going there. I love the ambiance. I like the fireplaces. I like being seated on the porch and looking out over the lawn. Ordered the eggplant parasean which was nicely prepared. Not everyone in this town knows how to make eggplant, but these folks do. I have been to some (supposedly) more authentic italian places---and Mangiamos is not about authenticity----who did not do as well with it. My meal was not extraordinary but it was good. I do kind of feel like all the Gillmore properties are variations on a theme. Is this good or bad? Depends on your mood.

I have a hard time choosing how to rate this, because Mangiamo has pretty delicious food. The building is beautiful. But only so much can make up for consistently awful service. If you are with a party of primarily guests under 40, don't expect anything resembling good service. I have visited multiple times with college friends, and we get almost ignored by our server every time. Yes, I understand the stereotype- but we are well-dressed/ professional students who enjoy good food, drink, and service. We acted polite and mature as we would in any situation- no rowdy prom groups here. There's no excuse for treating a table much worse than others simply because of age; as a server myself, I want to understand it, but I can't when it happens every time. I visited with just myself and my parents once and got better service, yet still not excellent. The server was basically just non-present, acting distracted and busy despite it being about 4pm and the dining room that we were in being almost empty with one other table sat. In all my experiences, it just seems that the server could not possibly care less about making sure our experience was good. Yes, the food is good. Almost great. But the service is what makes me not return. There are better options for italian food in the area where you can have a server that may potentially not hate you for no reason.

We were in town for the recent GR Marathon. Found this on Yelp and went Friday night for Carb load. It was great! Had the Ziti Family Style - pasta, ceasar salad and breadsticks were very tasty and service was excellent. Liked it so much we brought my parents on Saturday night...had Fish in Paper, Beef Shoulder and pepperoni pizza - all diners raved about their individual meals. Also had a great bottle of Italian wine at a very reasonable price.....so we came back on Sunday evening! Wanted a good steak place but seems all steak places in GR are closed on Sunday. So our group had Filet, Beef Shoulder, Lasagna and 1/2 Duck. Again, nothing disappointed. All were great. Did I mention we also sampled the desserts - chocolate tort, gelato, sorbet all were excellent as well. Atmosphere was awesome - old mansion in the middle of a residential area. Service was always good and the Manager stopped by every night at the end of our meal to chat. Highy recommend this place for either fancy or semi-casual dinner (nice jeans and sweater)!

Three in our party had the white fish and vegies..VERY good One person had the baked ziti, and loved it! We reserved the time for 8:15pm, after making the reservation at about 7pm........but when we arrived at 7:30pm, we were served right away!! Thanks for a pleasurable evening!

We had been here a few years ago and it was great. We went back today and had a different experience. The pizzas were limp and not good. The rissotto was dry. The soup was ok. My mother in law ordered the eggplant dish and was disappointed. The apps were ok. Overall, we will not be back. :(

We were seated quickly and the decor was pleasant enough, and the olive oil with herbs on the table promised delicious Italian bread was to come. Unfortunately when we got the bread it was tasteless, as well as the olive oil. It tasted like, well, nothing. We hoped for the best and server came by occasionally until our food was delivered, then she disappeared all together. My husband had the veal stuffed ravioli which he described as a combination of flavors that really did not work together. My Alfredo, which sounded amazing on the menu, was completely flavorless just like the bread. I tasted noodles, and that was it, even the mountain of cheese I had asked my server to put on top (supposedly Parmesan) and as much pepper as I could shake out of their frustratingly useless shakers, could not save this pasta dish. Our server reappeared long enough to mutter 'Do you need boxes, no? Check?'. Despite our plates still being relatively full she never asked how our meal was and seemed quick to get us out so she could tend to the rather large party that had just arrived. We filled out a comment card and left it with the hostess, their out the back door pizzas, while lacking in toppings, are still quite yummy and worth the price. Unfortunately, that seems to be this place's only saving grace.

Our second visit to Mangiamo was on Valentine's Day this year, along with other couples. It was a Tuesday night, and we had reservations for 6pm. We were seated immediately, and a waitress came over right away. She brought us drinks and bread while we perused the menu. The bread was plain and though it was okay, it was nothing to write home about. I was happy to see several vegetarian dishes on the menu, though not too many vegan. I ordered the Harvest Salad, which had baby arugula, apples, roasted butternut squash, red onions, dried cranberries, spiced nuts, asiago fresco cheese, and cider-balsamic vinaigrette. Though I asked for dressing on the side, my tiny $6 salad came drenched in so much dressing that I couldn't distinguish any of the separate flavors. For my main course, I ordered a "small plate" called Grilled Eggplant Caponata. It was a little stack of 3 eggplant slices with walnuts, pinenuts, dried cranberries, dried cherries, onions, dark chocolate, over marinara sauce, touch of honey, and balsamic reduction, according to the menu. I didn't find any cranberries or cherries, so maybe they were blended into the sauce. It was very rich and delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, though it seemed a bit too salty to me. My tablemates ordered chicken fettucini, pizza, pulled pork sandwich, and glazed pork loin. They all seemed to enjoy their dinners -- judging by the way they cleaned their plates, anyway. I am not going to change my review even though I wasn't completely happy. My main dish was quite tasty, the atmosphere is very nice and cozy, and the waitress was attentive and friendly. my first review: We visited Mangiamo for the first time this past weekend. They were really busy and justifiably so. The friendly waitress brought us nice rosemary scented bread to start, and we dipped it in olive oil and parmesan. My husband got the house salad, which actually had garbanzo beans in it! I ordered chicken canelloni, which came stuffed with mushrooms, ricotta, and chicken. It was covered with more mushrooms and a rich alfredo sauce. The portion was quite large and I finished only half of it. My dh got the steak, asparagus, and potatoes. He said it was good, except that the asparagus was a little bitter. We shared some chocolate amaretto cheesecake for dessert, which was quite yummy.

We hosted our annual Christmas party at Mangiamo's this year, and it was a complete success. The night started a little off because we had to wait a half hour for our reserved table. (Keep in mind, they were making accommodations for 14 people.) The customer service was very friendly and the food was delicious. I had the Mixed Seafood Linguine, and it was enough for two meals! Overall, a great experience and the perfect place for a special occasion.

Be sure to ask to eat on the porch. It's quieter and a great atmosphere. Had the Veal Scallopini. It was different, but very good. Smaller portion so be sure to add the salad. Sampled some friend's pizza as well which was very good as well.

Went for Valentines day with my lovely wife. We sat in the wine cellar of all places. It was a very unique atmosphere and we both loved it. The wife had he Hanger Steak and I had the Lamb Shank. Both were prepared well and hot. I had draft beer for a beverage and my wife sampled the extensive wine list. All in all, a very good experience. We have been here a number of times and have not been burned. Highly recommended.

Dined on Friday night. It was not very busy, so you think the service would be quick. But, the food and drinks took a long time. The filet was good. My house salad was meh. The tablecloths dumb down the experience. The menu prices are very reasonable, so they must be trying to down play the ambiance to match price and be more approachable. It could be a very nice restaurant. Overall, not that impressed and I really love the old mansion idea.

I have been looking forward to trying Mangiamo ever since I moved to Grand Rapids three years ago and finally went last weekend for my roommate's graduation. Perhaps three years of looking at a packed parking lot led to a lot of hype and high expectations because I was quite dissatisfied. Yes, it was very busy, but our server came to our table maybe every 20 minutes and she brought out the complimentary bread only a few minutes before our food came out, which wasn't even warm. I had the special, which was almond encrusted whitefish, risotto with squash, and warm arugula salad for about $14. The fish would have been decent if it was warmer and the skin wasn't on it, the risotto was just okay, and the arugula salad was delicious, but way too sweet in my opinion. My roommate got a half order of the gnocchi and a caesar salad. She said the gnocchi was okay and the server didn't bring out her salad because I guess she forgot so we asked her to take it off the bill. Sure enough the caesar salad was brought to the table when we were halfway through dinner and again my roommate said she no longer wanted it and asked the server to take it off the bill. Was it taken off the bill? Yes, but only after the server brought the bill, the salad was on the bill, and we talked to another server explaining the predicament. The restaurant itself is gorgeous! It is very spacious, richly decorated, and cozy. I'm sure it would be a much better experience coming here when it is not as busy, but I will not be giving Mangiamo a second chance any time soon.

Sometimes it is a 5 star, sometimes it's a 3 star. So I averaged. The goat cheese appetizer is divine, their ravioli's are pretty awesome.

Darn it! There's no photo of this place?!?! Def needs a photo... please add a photo fellow GR Yelpers. Its a large victorian style home with the entrance at the center of the restaurant with seating on either side. We were situated on the side with the large fireplace. Very nice ambiance. I think of a more local Buca di Beppos type place that has a neighborhood feel. It might be 3 stars anywhere else, but people in Grand Rapids were definitely talking it up. The cabbie was even saying how "upscale" this place was. I have a hard time giving it anymore than that. All the food was just meh. The crostini with olive tapenade. Meh. Calamari.... well just the norm. I guess if you are expecting American Italian food - then you have hit the jackpot here. I had a whitefish dish that was served with pesto. You might think yum - but the pesto was baked on the fish which tasted sort of burnt. I just pushed all that aside and tried to make the most of the meal. It was the only fish offered besides salmon. Yep - def landed in the good ole' midwest with their heavy food.

I'm a fan because I like normal Italian food without all the flare. Lasagna is very good and filling, plenty of food for leftovers. I'd get the bruscetta again but not the greasy garlic bread. The bruscetta is a make your own type and well worth the work. .99 cent peroni drafts are big enough to order about 10-12 oz. vs. the taller beers. The restaurant is worth a try just to see the inside of the place. Old pictures, awesome woodwork and a maze of dining rooms. Bar has piano player on most nights I think, make reservations or you'll wait. I'm going to try to the pizza next time for sure based on Ben B.'s review.

Mangiamo is situated in a Mansion sort of away from all of the GR action. It is beautifully decorated and there is live jazz piano music. As for the food, all 6 of us enjoyed what we had very much. I had the eggplant pizza, other people had the chicken marsala, the vegetable plate, etc. It was all very tasty, which is no surprise because this place is owned by the company that owns Rosies. Also, we all ordered drinks (summery fruity drinks) which hit the spot. It is surprisingly inexpensive for this quality of food, so given price and quality, this has to be one of GR's best dining options.

I've always enjoyed Mangiamo's food - lasanga and two napkin garlic bread are great! The hidden thing is the $5 pizzas they sell out the back door - they're so good and inexpensive!!

We went there for the first time tonight. Found the prices reasonable and the food good but not great. We found the food a bit under seasoned. The menu is rather limited and is not a place for everyone. Would not really consider this a true Italian restaurant but rather one with am Italian flair as menu is more a variation of Italian. We had no complaints with the service as it was better than most of the Galore Collection.

10 of us had dinner here last night prior to a concert, so time was of the essence. Our server, Noah, was professional, knowledgeable and , best of all, got our food and drinks out in a timely manner without rushing us. And separate checks too! The food was amazing. From the special salad with spinach, goat cheese, walnuts, apples, etc. with a sweet Chardonnay dressing to the entree of hebi (fish, I may have it spelled wrong...similar to mahi mahi), served with an awesome risotto and roasted root vegetables, everything was great. I would have licked the plate but people were watching.

I went here with my family (which was a group of 11) last week. We walked in and the hostess was slightly rude, the wait was quite long for a Monday night.. So we went to the bar and put a bunch of tables together. Best part of the bar is Peroni's drafts are $1 ALL THE TIME! I ordered the Black Tie Farfalle - which was delicious with all the pine nuts and gorgonzola cheese mmm mmm. Prices are incredibly affordable and reasonable! Highly recommended, actually any one of the Gilmore collections are great!

Review started 2/15/2010: Last time I was in this building, it was Gibson's! We stopped in for happy hour this weekend and had a great time. The hostess was a little touchy with us (we are booked until 9pm, do you have a reservation? Oh, yes, the bar is open) until we said we just wanted drinks and snacks... They have a GREAT happy hour! From 2-6 daily you can get drinks and apps for $1.99. I had some decent wine and a decent little pizza (pizzela?). Update 6/26/2010: Met friends of the family for drinks and dinner and had a lovely time. This place is nice, the food is good, and the drink specials cannot be beat! Well, maybe at another Gilmore Group restaurant... We'll be back.

The setting is very nice--it is a large old mansion refurbished into a restaurant--and the service was great. Portions are rather small for the price, but the food was good but not outstanding.

I have been to Mangiamo for social large events and personal celebrations. I would not necessary label this restaurant as true Italian restaurant. It has somewhat limited menu. The food was prepared nicely but lack of true Italian flavor, somewhat blend without boldness. The ambiance, however, was amazing. The staff are very friendly. It is a good place to enjoy the ambiance over a glass of wine and catch up with old friends, but not necessary the place for good eats!

My husband and I went here a couple of weeks ago for the first time. We started with the calamari, which was delicious but odd to have deep fried olives and pepperoni with it. Would have preferred just calamari. We each had a steak entree with risotto. The wild mushroom risotto was the best we've ever had. The garlic risotto was so-so. I requested my steak medium and it arrived rare. I really didn't even need to cut it, as I could just tell from touching it, but I cut it open to show the waitress it was purple. I'm not a chef and can tell when meat is raw, so I can't believe it made it out of the kitchen that way. I had the espresso steak, and my husband had the flat iron steak. His steak was delicious and mine was just okay - quite fatty and even after returning for a 2nd time from the kitchen it was still not cooked correctly, but I ate around the middle that was now med-rare. Wish they had homemade pasta and I may have ordered some. We expected it to be more authentic, homemade Italian, so we were a little disappointed it was not. They mentioned they were turning over into a "scratch" kitchen though, so perhaps improvement is on the way. We will definitely go here again to give it another shot. We really enjoyed the environment, as it was not your typical restaurant feel.

I have enjoyed this place. The service is good and I love the live music on the week-ends and you cant beat the atmosphere ! Great place to go with friends or family. Appetizers have been great as well as the Pizza but I too have found the other entrees to be hit and miss. Overall I still really like the place and am glad to have it as a option. In the summer you can enjoy drinks out on their large lawn.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. My friend and I came in, wanting to eat pasta. From the salad to the dessert it was truly authentic food. For a first timer in Grand Rapids, and randomly picking an Italian restaurant it was great. The only complaint I have was the Waiter was very inattentive.

Mangiamo makes a special night! I attended a wedding rehearsal dinner in the library of this restaurant and I would completely recommend it for any special occasion. It's an Italian restaurant- so stick with the Italian food! Some of us had the steak, which was really good, but those who had the lasagna with bolognese sauce were the smart ones. It was fantastic. The atmosphere and decor are refined and classy; the drink selection is good; and the staff is friendly. Two thumbs up, Mangiamo!

  • Phil G.

This one is difficult. I feel the restaurant should be called "Mangiamo... solo un po" (Italian for 'let's eat...just a little bit) rather than "Mangiamo!" I was tempted to 1-star this place, but our server was good and the entertainer was great - very friendly folks - and they brought it up a notch. First off, The Gilmore Collection does have a rather formulaic approach to their restaurants: great ambiance + skimpy food portions + watered down drinks + brutalized waitstaff + prices just high enough to irritate but not enrage. The penetration of each point varies slightly from location to location, but many will agree they are all there to some extent at most of their collection. My wife and I brought the kids. We arrived a touch before 5:00 pm on a Sunday, so it was not at all busy. We were sat immediately and our waitress was very nice. We ordered the kids' meals immediately (pizza) and our drinks. My wife got a glass of wine and I got a "Godfather", which is supposed to include scotch and amaretto. Mine was more like a "Step-son" - I'll be darned if there was more than a light splash of scotch to go with the splash of amaretto and all the ice. Ok. Whatever. On to the food: My wife got the "Fall Squash Ravioli". Now, my wife typically takes half of any entree home (her caloric intake is just under that of our 3 year old's), and even she said "Uh, is this all I get?" It was 4 ravioli. For $16. That's $4 per ravioli, folks - not a stellar deal. I got the "Filet Mignon", which was supposed to be 8 oz. That's kind of like saying I have 6-pack abs. I had them showing in my youth and they're technically still there, but the light has to be just right and you have to squint just so. I also asked for it cooked medium-well and, as you can see by the photo I'm including, it was slightly past well-done. Lastly, I got a Johnny Walker Black, neat. They gave me half a shot. I'm also including the photo on that. Don't get me wrong. They have some good deals, but it's mostly pizza and wine stuff. As with most places, try to avoid the weaknesses and go with the strengths. I recommend pizza, beer or wine. Skip the mixed drinks and liquor, skip the pricier entrees. Anyway, my kids loved their pizza and we enjoyed the accordion player.

Fabulous place for a wedding rehearsal dinner. We enjoyed enjoyed our private party in the library. We were served a variety of beers and wines with fruit and bruschetta appetizers, options for salad and main course, as well as a table of desert choices. I would recommend them for your rehearsal dinner venue if you want a classy spot with delicious food.

The Gilmore Collection has made the Wurzburg mansion a treasure to dine in. The rooms are charming and the restaurant is beautiful. The restaurant has a cool bar area and dining area in different rooms of the mansion. I haven't ever ate outside, but would look forward to that when the weather gets better. We've been here several times, but most recent in September to celebrate a special occasion for my husband and I. We started off with the Tuscan flash fried calamari, it prepared with roasted garlic, salami, peppers, olives, charred tomato vinaigrette. This was different than any other calamari we have ever tried and the other vegetables in the dish made it unique. We really enjoyed it. Next, we had the crispy brussels sprouts. They are made with sea salt, toasted peppercorn-raw honey, toasted almonds. These two are completely different than any other way we have tried them. It was sweet, crunchy and salty all at the same time. For my entree, I had pork with sweet potato gnocchi. The cream sauce and vegetables were delicious. I'm glad I tried something completely different. My husband had cheese stuffed ravioli. It was sauteed with carrots, sweet peas, potatoes, cranberries, italian sausage, calabrian pepper flakes, sambuca ream, roma tomatoes. It was certainly delcious. My only reservation about this place is the pricing. Our entrees were relatively small portions and were $18 and $16. Other than this, it is a great place to get a freshly cooked meal.

Magiamo's is located in one of Grand Rapids beautifully restored old mansions. Red and white checkered table linens, cozy fireplaces and a Tiffany glass window add to the charm and ambiance. Our group ordered pastas, salads, seafood and chicken dishes to share. All were very good...including the tiramisu and gelato for dessert! Delicioso, Magiamo!

I had lunch on the patio today after a morning yoga class on the lawn. The lunch menu includes soup, paninis, salads and a burger, along with a few items from their dinner menu. I had the pick 2 combination- you can get soup, half salad, or a panini. I got the roasted vegetable salad and the prosciutto panini. The salad was so good! It had fresh sweet corn, grilled asparagus, tomatoes, arugula, goat cheese, and blue cheese. The panini was just ok. It's on thick focaccia bread which kind of overpowers the sandwich, which only had a couple slices of prosciutto, cheese and spinach. The flavors were good, though. I really liked that there are no stipulations about which salads are included with the pick 2, you can get any of the salads or sandwiches listed on the menu. I also had a glass of sangria which was very good! Not too sweet, but refreshing and fruity. I was kind of disappointed that it didn't have any fruit in it, just a lime and an orange slice on the rim. The service was fine. The patio is really nice, I highly recommend it for a sunny day! I will definitely go back again.

We had a very long wait from when we placed our order until we received our mea despite 2 requests to staff to check on our order. We saw others come and go in that time. When a mistake was recognized the covered all 5 of our meals which was an appropriate response. The food was good. There was a nice decor and ambiance. We had over 2 hours to look it over.

I have driven or rode my bike past Mangiamo! countless times since I have lived in Grand Rapids. I have always been interested in the charm of the big old house and the food. Mangiamo is one of the few Gilmore Collection restaurants that my fiance' and I haven't tried, and it came highly recommended by my parents and co-workers. We don't go out for Italian very often, because it is a staple of our work week menu at home. That might change! I called the hostess to inquire about reservations or seating in the lounge. She was very friendly and helpful, and since I didn't know what time we would be arriving on that Saturday afternoon, she suggested that I call her at 3 PM the day of. She informed me that there we're still plenty of tables available, and also gave me some details about the lounge. I prefer to sit in the lounge, or at the bar. I do like cocktails with my meal. We arrived about 4:30, grabbed a seat at the bar, and ordered drinks. The hostesses and bartender were very friendly, and we recognized the bartender from our summer outings at The Blue water Grill. Nice! The trip to the bathroom was an awesome adventure, and the basement interior halls of this old house felt like a movie set. The high tops in the lounge filled up quickly as we ordered, and I was glad that we had arrived when we had! First, we ordered the Two Napkin Garlic Bread. Awesome. Garlic 3 ways and such perfect seasoning. You must try this. I had the Red Lasagna and my finance' had the Grilled Chicken Cavatappi . My lasagna was maybe the best I have ever had, with big chunks of sausage in the red sauce, and a portion big enough for leftovers. Perfect, delicious cheese. My girl's pasta was cooked perfectly, but she thought that it may have been a little under-seasoned. She loved that it tasted very fresh. I rationalized that we tend to prefer a heavily seasoned plate at home, and when she re-heated the leftovers (the portions we're nice), she spiced it up a bit and really enjoyed it! This was a great dining experience, and I recommended Mangiamo! to a couple I work with who we're looking for a nice place to celebrate their anniversary. For the atmosphere, the food, and the beautiful old house, it is a great place to celebrate a special occasion. I hope I made the right call and that they love Mangiamo as much as we did.

I attended a rehearsal dinner 5/8/15 in the Library, and it was perfect. The dinner (salad, lasagna, roasted veggies, green beans) was all perfectly cooked. Service was excellent and they let the host decorate the tables in advance. This is a great restaurant for special events!

I've never written even a semi-negative Yelp post before, but I felt the need to write this one after our recent experience at Mangiamo. We were very disappointed. We're new to the area and had heard good things so we made a reservation for a Saturday night at 8PM. We arrived early and sat at the bar for a few drinks while waiting for our table. The bartender was fabulous but there was a guy hanging out that appeared to be (based on his interactions with staff) an off the clock employee who reeked of smoke and appeared to be quite inebriated. It was distracting. But the piano player was great and the bar had a nice ambiance. We were politely seated and ordered Caesar salads for an additional $4 each. They were pretty well the worst Caesar salads we've ever had. You'd have thought it was iceberg lettuce given that there was nothing green in the bowl and there was virtually no dressing. We used some of the olive oil from our bread basket offerings to dress it up but it was still pretty bad. Our waitress did not offer parmesan or pepper. There was no salt or pepper at the table. The entrees arrived and they were good although again, no offer of any spices or cheese which would've been appropriate given our dishes. I had the scallops (four dollar-coin sized for $26), my husband had the baked ziti. We were pleased with our meal for the most part though I felt that the scallop dinner was overpriced given the size of the scallops and that fact that there was no vegetable or starch included other than some crispy baked kale pieces and a thin smear of mashed potato served underneath. The presentation was nice though. My biggest complaint is with regards to the service. I noticed on our waitresses' name tag that she'd been with the business for ten years or more. Maybe it was an off night. Who knows. But she was not helpful or attentive and when she literally threw down dessert menus and walked away, I was astonished. The place was extremely slow at that point (9PM) so it wasn't as if she were slammed with customers. It just didn't feel like we were wanted there. I watched the same server treat others similarly so it wasn't just us. For the price of the entrees, we expected an experience. A positive one to be precise. And we did not have that. We eat out frequently and have visited several other establishments near to Mangiamo in the last week since moving here. This was a real disappointment as it was supposed to be our special night out and it fell far short of our expectations. We won't be back for dinner. We tried to order pizza for take out as that sounded like a good deal but the pizza oven is still broken (was when we were there too). I'm disappointed to write a bad review...but for all the hype about the place, it just didn't do anything for us. Overpriced food with bad service. Seems that they're resting on prior laurels.

In the right circumstances, this place is a real treat. Its highlights include $6.99 pizzas out the back door, a great happy hour menu for both food and drinks before 6:00p, and outdoor patio seating off their palatial green lawn. Great setting, too: The Gilmore Collection deserves big applause for maintaining the ambiance and environment of this beautiful, historic building. The regular, sit-down menu is a bit pricey, considering the many diverse and acclaimed restaurants on the same block. But grab a pizza, eat outside on a warm summer evening, or drop by after work for drinks with friends and this place will do you fine without breaking the bank.

We were promptly greeted and seated in the outdoor patio per our request. We'd been at the beach all day and weren't feeling fresh or formal, so outdoor seating was perfect, although being in a beautifully maintained mansion setting, we would have felt welcome wherever due to the pleasant staff. Our server was attentive and genuinely nice; not the sort whose smile is gone immediately on turning away from the table. I ordered a fish entree that was prepared in parchment paper with fresh vegetables - mainly very thinly sliced zucchini, summer squash, and cherry tomatoes. It was every bit as good as my server claimed, with all the juices and flavor sealed in. My daughter ordered the sherry honey glazed half duck and I could tell just from looking at it that it tasted divine. Thankfully she let me sample to confirm. Her entree was served with potatoes, beets, peas, and fennel. The root vegetables were a nice, hearty touch. At $29, hers was one of the most expensive items on the menu, but dang was it delicious with enough left for a second meal. My fish was about $24 and very good, but being less heavy, I are it all. I wish there had been a more substantial side item as the veggies were not all that pronounced and were served beneath the fish in the parchment bag, so the plate itself didn't look that appealing. Although we were offered dessert/coffee, neither of us had room for any more deliciousness on our tongues. We left full and very satisfied. By the way, the lawn area is sprawling and geniuosly laid out with ladder ball, a football beckoning from the grass, other lawn games and a tented area so you really feel like you've been invited to the rich uncle's estate for family reunion. For those wishing to dine inside, the atmosphere is lovely and interesting. A good place to meander around, and the bar featured nice, unassuming live music. The only things I would suggest for improvement is regular drink and appetizer specials for those wanting to hang out on a budget. I drank one mojito for $6.50 - reasonable but a fairly small serving.

I've been here several times over the past 10 years, mostly to celebrate a fancy occasion. Yesterday we decided on Mangiamo for my birthday dinner. We ate outside on the terrace at dusk, which may be the most romantic place in the whole city. I ordered the pappardelle vegetable pasta dish, and chose shrimp as an add-on. I was expecting maybe 3 or so added to my pasta. Instead, I got about 7 or 8 monster shrimp, perfectly pink and charred, piled on top of the pappardelle, which was so fresh it must have been prepared from scratch in the kitchen. The whole thing was delicious, and I was a very happy birthday girl. The service has always been great, too. I tend to ask potentially annoying questions about the history of the house, and the staff, from the bartenders to the servers, are very knowledgeable and happy to talk about the mansion's rich history.

This is an upscale restaurant and bar located in a beautiful historic mansion. It is worth visiting just for the atmosphere. This would be an excellent place to bring a date. The service was good and there's plenty of seating. Thursday, we arrived for happy hour, 4PM, and got small pizzas and other items for something like $3 each! Wow, what a deal! And, the food was excellent too. The drinks were also about $3. Excellent! I had the artichoke balls, which had deep fried breading and goat cheese, with a tomato dip sauce. I wasn't impressed by the taste, but it was creative! Then, I tried the pesto pizzas (sans the chicken) and it was also tasty. Ask for extra pesto. Next, I tried the magarita pizza with extra cheese. This was quite fine. I had a glass of sangria, which was tasty and a good portion. I looked at the dinner menu, and it looks like standard Italian but quite expensive. But, I was VERY PLEASED with the happy hour prices and meals. I would highly recommend the happy hour to you. If I lived in GR, I would visit this place often.

Went here last night with my husband and parents - my second visit with my husband, my parents first. We got a few different dishes family style - it was so delicious! The baseball meatball and spaghetti is a must! My husband got the central Italy wine flight and I got the southern Italy wine flight - also a great idea. Perfect (and generous!) sampling of each. Definitely a gem in the Gilmore collection!

My boyfriend and I went last night (new years eve). We sat at the bar in the lounge area. The live music was great. I has an amazing unoaked Chardonnay that was delightful! For my meal I had the Ball Tip Sirloin that was cooked perfectly to temperature! The asparagus was fresh and cooked perfectly as well. And the mushroom risotto was amazing! The service was outstanding and The manager, Jon Droski, even came by to check how everything was, which it's great to see a manager who genuinely cares!

This place is great. My niece wanted to come here for her birthday, so she made a reservation for 7 people at 7 pm the day before. No problem getting a table although the place was busy. We were seated in the library. Service was pretty good. West Michigan seems to have a unique custom of hiring very young girls as waitresses, even in upscale places. She did well, but lacked some polish. Drinks were a little slow. Grey goose dirty martini with bleu cheese stuffed olives was close to perfect. They had a great California red on special that was great as well. We ordered the calamari to share as an appetizer. Really good. Perfectly fried and came with fried peppers, pepperoni and some other stuff. Delicious. I ordered the scallops. It was a light dish (3 or 4 sea scallops) complemented with delicious faro, which I've never eaten before. Nice creamy fennel sauce, perfectly cooked scallops. Everyone seemed happy with their dishes. Everything came out correctly. We all had Caesar salads, which were a little overpriced at $4, but came with really nice croutons and Parmesan crisps. We ordered one of each dessert to share for the birthday girl. Flourless chocolate cake was a standout. Strawberry shortcake was memorable for not being too sweet, which I appreciated. The waitress very discretely brought me the check as I asked. Two other people (managers?) stopped by the table to ask how everything was, and they were genuinely interested. My plate had already been cleared and I was asked what I had. I couldn't remember what the faro was called and he gave a nice little description of it. On that note, I just bumped up to 5 stars. Beautiful setting, great food, very good service and fair prices. What's not to love?

Terrible service and terrible food, the only reason I gave it a single star is Yelp doesn't have a zero star option. I won't get into everything that was wrong, but it took us over an hour to get served our entrees. Our entrees had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp(or just sitting) for at least 20 minutes and were nearly inedible by the time they reached us. The food was cold and dry. The server didn't really care and was rather rude and the manager took off 1 of our meals from our bill, but we paid for the other 3. The manager seemed miffed that we even asked to talk to him, all 4 of us agreed that our food had to have been sitting for a long time, but the manager wanted to argue with us, claiming that was not the case. I will never return to Mangiamo, one of the very worst dining experiences I have ever had. My 3 companions agreed, we were celebrating a special occasion and this was simply unacceptable in both terms of food and service. One of my fellow diners is a local chef who was absolutely appalled with his food. Do not go to this restaurant! Ordering and eating a chicken sandwich from Burger King will be a more satisfying meal with better service and you'll save some money too. The manager of this restaurant needs to be fired because it's obvious that they have zero experience working in fine dining, the wait staff at Denny's is trained better than the staff at Mangiamo. You have to be completely oblivious of what is happening at a restaurant to let the level of service and food quality be this bad. This went way beyond an otherwise good restaurant having a bad night.

My wife and I went for dinner with a friend on a Friday night around 6:30. We didn't have a reservation but were seated fairly quickly which was nice. It took our server about 10 minutes to come to our table. She set down the bread basket and walked away. After we had used the oil on the table and polished off the bread, she came back and put down cheese on a plate and poured oil on it knowing full well we had already finished the basket. She said she was going to get another for us and we did get it. 20 minutes later. The brussels sprouts appetizer was very good and came out quickly. My wife was given an old menu, luckily she didn't want anything that was different from the current menu. Our friend and my wife ordered the same dish which included a salad and breadsticks. The salads came out and were nothing close to spectacular, but they are side salads so I don't think we were expecting greatness. The breadsticks never came. We asked for the included breadsticks that should have come out with the meals and were told that she was going to get them from the kitchen. The girls finished eating their pasta, a manager walked by and we asked him about the missing breadsticks and he also went to the kitchen to find them. When the server came back, she asked if they would like to have their meals boxed and took the plates away to box them up. As far as I'm concerned, your plate should never leave the table and return. If they want to box the meals, bring the box over and do it at the table. I don't know what you do to it in the kitchen and at this point, I'm not positive what they do in the kitchen at all. The breadsticks finally came out. in one box. There were two separate people who had meals. One box. You could tell it was a pretty big inconvenience for the manager to split them into two boxes so both girls could have their own to take home. The pasta tasted like was a small step above "TV dinner" quality and the breadsticks that took so long were by far not house made, I wouldn't doubt if they came frozen. My steak was cooked properly and just ok all around. All in all we were not impressed by the service at Mangiamo. The management and the waitstaff did not communicate and the food was mediocre at best. It fit in well with the other Gillmore Collection restaurants that we've been to. Overpriced and under serviced.

My husband and I visited for our 6 year wedding anniversary in November and the place was decked out beautifully for Christmas. The front porch had beautiful wreaths and the lights just set the mood. Our service was amazing, very attentive but not at all pretentious or suffocating. We definitely took our time as we rarely get out alone (3 year old at home), so we were there for 2+ hours and we never felt rushed. Now the most important part...the food and drinks. My husband and I both got a different wine flight and were happy that we did. Good variety and quality. I had the pork tenderloin which is out of my norm and it was cooked perfectly. Probably the best I've ever had. I added caesar salad and it was...ok. The sweet potato gnocchi was a little dense and not my favorite but the sauces that they serve with it totally make up for it. Just the right amount of kick and flavor but not too overwhelming. Husband had their beef tenderloin and it was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. No complaints from his side of the table. Bread was complimentary and served fresh from oven. Last but not least...the creme brulee and tiaramasu martini...both solid choices. Manager comped our dessert for our anniversary as well so that was a sweet gesture.Overall a great experience!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
