Growing up in California, I was quite spoiled when it came to AMAZING Mexican food. After moving to Michigan, I was so disappointed that no restaurant served fantastic, authentic Mexican food. Then I discovered LA HUASTECA!!! I am spoiled once more! We stop at least once a week and have referred friends as well. No one has a bad thing to say! Hands down, the best Mexican food around! PS...every order of their Guacamole is hand made when you order it!

I was craving some authentic Mexican and we journeyed over to try out La Huasteca. For 7pm on a holiday weekend they were slammed busy which is a good sign in my book. I had come craving tacos and ordered a carne asada, a barbaccoa and a spicy pork. I ordered them "Mexican style" which is cliantro & onion but requested very, very light onion as they really don't agree with me. My husband ordered the flauta dinner. Our food came out quickly and my tacos were literally swimming in onions, I don't know if they confused "light" with lots but it was clear that the message was lost. Fortunately they were right on top and easy to swipe off but unfortunately it took most of the cilantro with it. The corn tortillas had been dipped in hot oil but not really allowed proper drain time so they were greasy, like 20 paper napkins later you still are slippery greasy. Don't get me wrong I love me some fried tortillas but it affected the flavor of the meat. The homemade hot sauces were very good and made fresh daily. My husband inhaled his flautas but left most of his beans and rice, he added a lot of verde sauce to the rice and it made it better but overall he felt they were meh. To drink we had both ordered horchata. It was the sweetest I have ever had. So cloyingly sweet, with a butterscotch aftertaste. You could tell it was from a powered mix because it was allover the bottom of the glass. I love horchata but this was way too sweet. Our service was good, its not a huge place so it doesn't take very long to get your order. I think we would try it again and just modify what we order.

What a gem! We came across La Huasteca by chance and decided to check it out-- so glad we did! Prompt, courteous service during our dine-in experience. We ordered a little bit of everything: delicious tamales, sopes, tacos, burritos, & quesadilla. Amazing fresh house-made sauces accompanied our food. Hands-down best horchata I have ever had! This is the real deal! We will be back!

I've been going here since they opened and while they've always been great, I really think they're getting more and more spot on with their seasonings and food handling in general. I've had the steak, chicken, regular pork and barbacoa tacos and the torta, sopes, asada, flautas and dry burrito. The meals can easily be split in half. Everything I've had has been really good, though keep in mind that if you're ordering delivery the flautas can get that cold, greasy taste. I bet they're amazing freshly made. The flautas are made with shredded chicken or pork and fried in a corn tortilla--like a taquito. The sopes are like a little dough pocket filed with whatever protein you want. The alambre is really good as well. I've never had this dish before but it seems very much like fajitas to me, with spicy pork, chicken and steak served with peppers and onions and tortillas. The dinners come with rice and beans, tortillas and some extras that seem to change constantly. I've gotten jalapenos, lime, avocado, little pearl onions and radishes. The food can be heavy and greasy but if you would like something less so I would recommend the torta. They're sooooo good and filling for around five bucks. The chips and salsa aren't free but are pretty worth the two bucks imo.

Took my oldest daughter and son here for dinner, they were skeptical! Now they love it! TKO!

The prices are good and the food is fresh. With that said, the food was a bit disappointing. I guess it's authentic Mexican, if authentic mexican has very little taste. My wife and I tried the tacos, flautas, gorditas, beans, rice, and tamale. They actually ran out of chicken while we were there....which was surprising. With the exception of the tacos, the food was just extremely bland. HOWEVER, they have a taco that the meat choice is some mexican meat blend with sausage, bologna, and hot dogs topped with avocado, cilantro and cheese. It sounds kind of nasty, but was very very tasty. I would be tempted to stop in there again to get a few of those, but unlikely that I will return at all. Not much for a dining room and parking is a problem. They say parking is around back, and you kind of walk up through this inconspicuous backdoor, and up these steep narrow stairs into their cleaning supplies room. It was kind of strange. The people were very nice and the place was clean.

Excellent vegetarian options. I love the cactus as an option. Delicious. The guacamole is fresh and homemade. We wanted flan, but they ran out :( We will be back to eat here again.

When this place first opened I really liked it. Very authentic and good portions for the price. I was not happy when I went about five months ago, I ordered the lunch special which includes two tacos with rice and beans. The rice and beans were bland and the steak tacos were full of pieces of chopped up fat and I could not even eat them. I stopped going there after that, and just today decided to try again thinking that maybe they just had a different cook etc. last time. I was wrong!!! I paid $14.60 for the lunch "special" that included the two tacos, rice and beans. I also got two orders of chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were about the only good thing about my lunch, but were NOT worth $7.00...Again, the rice and beans were bland and and both of my tacos were full of fatty pieces. I couldn't even eat them. I will never go back......

Gave La Huasteca a try tonight. It's a small hole in the wall kind of place with surprisingly good authentic Mexican. It's located in a small strip of businesses off Plainfield just south of Knapp St. Their menu's fairly straight forward with options for tacos, burritos, tamales and a daily specials board next to the register. I ordered the barbacoa (beef cheek meat), adobada (spicy pork) and chorizo tacos, each of which come with cilantro and onions (radish slices and lime on the side). They were all very good! One of the highlights was their fresh made sauce that I liberally applied, awesome! When you arrive, it's easiest to park in the back (there's a side road that leads you back to a good sized parking area). Go through the door that says "La Huasteca" (it's just a windowless door with a knob). You'll have to walk up a flight of stairs past their cleaning supplies area and into the main restaurant. Whatever thoughts you might be having at this point, don't worry. The food is worth a try. Service was helpful and friendly. Pots steamed away on the tarnished stove top behind the register as I ordered and Spanish programming from a small TV over their fridge set the mood. Food came out quickly. I had ordered everything to-go so they double wrapped my tacos to keep them warm and bagged them with individual sides of their fresh sauces. The only drawback for me was the meat in the spicy pork and barbacoa tacos was less flavorful than I had been expecting. Though, still good tacos in their own right. I would definitely come back to try more off their menu.

Three great salsa's and chips to start. Have to try the house special taco's (hot dog, bologna and chorizo). This is an authentic hidden gem.

Hands down the best Taco that I have ever had. Let's just get that out of the way right now The past few weeks I have been on a traditional taco bender. I've eaten tacos from Taco Trucks two Detroit taco joints and a Toledo establishment. I went there with a friend who is a local and lives nearby so I was super excited to hear that it was good in his opinion. We went there for lunch. I ordered a barbacoa wet burrito and a barbacoa taco for myself and I ordered chips and guacamole to share with my friend. The staff was nice the food was plenty and the taco wins the prize for best Taco ever. I cannot wait to return.

amazing guacamole and horchata and really good tacos and tamales. carnitas were just ok (unseasoned fried pork, not much flavor) but the adobado and barbacoa were delicious. super nice service and insanely cheap. totally dead on a friday night.

This place was suggested by a friend that knows I like authentic food. I was not disappointed. I got a Lenqua taco and a steak gordita. Both were hot, fresh and really authentic. They had fresh cilantro and onions. My coworkers got wet burritos and those looked HUGE. I could not have eaten it all for lunch. Its kind of hard to park out front, I'd suggest parking in back and making your way from the downstairs door. You have to cut through a storage room, but street parking is very minimal.

Food is good but they never answer their phone and wouldn't honor their coupon ?!? Then my bill didn't even make sense - I'm all for local and authentic but I also like businesses that honor their coupons and charge correctly !

I was in Grand Rapids visiting from Toronto. And so I went out looking for Mexican food... In western michigan so I didn't have high hopes. Boy was I wrong. Found this little restaurant. It looks like a family run business. I started with the guacamole and chips. It was amazing. Right amount of tomato and cilantro. Chips were fresh too. That's when I knew the rest of the food would be great. I then proceeded to order waaay more than I could eat. Tacos (Barbacoa and pork) , gordita (chicken), grilled chicken and jarritos to drink. If I find myself back in Grand Rapids again this restaurant is on the must visit list if only to try everything else on the menu.

Ive driven by this place dozens of times but never really paid much attention to it. I'm glad my wife and I finally tried it! Authentic Mexican food in a hole in the wall location. Nice portions, good service, amazing cuisine. Simple menu. Definitely try it for a huge $9 dinner.

Another great Mexican place with unique flavors to sample. I had chicken enchiladas with rice and beans (photo added). Great facility for dine-in, although limited amount of seating if its busy. Service was top notch.

This place has stepped up a notch since they opened, they have obviously listened to their customers. Tortillas are better - they are now fried instead of plain. Chips are better - they are now homemade. Salsa is better. Tacos are overstuffed. Chips and homemade salsa are only $1.00. This is the only good taco joint on the NE side.

Great food! The quesadillas are not your run of the mill quesadillas, they are made with love and you can taste it!

This is a nice little hidden gem along Plainfield Avenue. I've eaten at most of the authentic Mexican restaurants in the area, and La Huesteca one is up in my top 5. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food was just plain awesome. I've had their tacos, carne asada and flautas. All are very well made and the flavor signature is just what you might expect if you were in Mexico having the same. Make sure to get a cup of their fresh daily horchata. So very nice.

Love this restaurant for it's fresh, homemade and rustic food. Don't expect fancy gringo designer food or a chic environment. This is a place to get simple but extremely tasty Mexican food that is offered with pride and care. I haven't had a single thing that I haven't liked (or loved!!) and go there regularly.

This place makes REAL Mexican food. The veggie burrito and veggie tacos are the best I've ever had! Avocado, cactus, onion, jalapeños inside! ¡Perfecto!

Makes me think of my favorite place in Chicago (La Pasidita). A proper steak taco with cilantro and onions. Really nice red an green hot sauces. Coke in glass bottles! Burrito was really good as well. Quick friendly service and prices were good as well. Happy to have them in the north end! First trip rates a solid B or B+ for me. Will be back for sure

I've been eating here for over one year. This is the real deal Mexican food. Love the grilled green onions and limes served with the meal. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is terrific. My favorites are the gorditas and tostadas. Limited street parking but more behind the building.

This place deserves 5 stars. Authentic foods here. If you like Maggie's, this place can give them a run for thier money and I would even say they try harder and also provide better food. You can often see many of the preparation of the foods they are serving. No pre-bought stuff here most of it is hand made. It is a good value and fresh product. I applaud them for this. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed!

Went on a Friday night around 7pm and it wasn't busy. There is not a lot of seating. Seems like most people do take-out. They have a lot of options. I had the Chiles Rellenos. It came with two stuffed peppers with a side of rice and refried beans. It was very good! Seems more authentic...I'd compare to Maggie's Kitchen. I definitely plan on coming back!

Had an early lunch on a Saturday w/ my family. Restaurant was quiet and clean; service was excellent. The steak tacos were my favorite and love the red & green sauces served in squeeze-bottles. The chicken tacos were OK - but I'd steer towards the steak every time. Very fortunate to have places like this where all the food isn't off the Sysco truck!

La Huasteca has great food, delivers and its open until 10 PM! What else can you ask for?! Don't expect a super fancy establishment, but the restaurant is clean and they have made many improvements in the decor since they open. The service is fast and friendly. They have a daily especial, which changes everyday and its usually pretty good. If you are particularly hungry , I recommend "alambre". Taste amazing and you probably will have left overs. Parking on Plainfield can be difficult, but they have parking in the back too.

Love the tamales! Gucamole is fresh and delicious. It's not fast food service, but worth the time. I have been here many times and the restaurant is always clean. Sodapop is in cans in a cooler rather than fountain drinks.

Have been here twice now and had different foods. The first time tried the tongue entry: excellent! Second time had the flautos with chicken, again excellent. The flan is to die for!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
