This place was horrible, we were left waiting 30 min. for our drink order, Then we were badgered by our waiter Cameron about ordering food. When we did order my and friends burger were ordered medium, they came out well done. Another of our group didn't even get her meal until the rest of us were done eating by at least a half hour. And to top it all off. The manager told us that he was sorry but a wedding was upstairs and they got her food by mistake because they were the number one priority. HOW RUDE!!! We place our order a half hour before the wedding party even arrived. We will not be going back. EVER.

We spend so much money at this place yearly as Kirby and K2 are our favorite places to eat in Grand Haven. We live here and Patronize this establishment at least once a week. Sadly a couple weeks ago during the Chili Blues the bartender with the huge tattoo on his arm was exceptionally rude. I guess at Kirby there is certain etiquette when ordering from the bar, you must stand in a certain spot, which I was not aware of. This tattoo toting 'tender was so upset and herded me into where I was to stand before he would serve me. So unfortunate that one grumpy employee can bruise a business.

Ate dinner with three other people. I had the Macho Nacho. It was cold when it arrived so the server offered to get me a new one; the second one was no warmer than the first and was doused in a cold lime cilantro sauce. I paid extra to have beef on it, but I couldn't find the beef. One of the other guests had the Wild Mushroom Boursin pizza; it was so flavorless she tried salting it, but that didn't help. Our server was efficient but not overly attentive or friendly. I'll not be back.

My boyfriend and I are in town this week for the coast guard festival and we wanted to go on a nice date night. After searching yelp and asking our in town family where to go, this is the place that was suggested. We knew it was going to be a bit busier than usual because of coast guard so we made reservations a week in advanced. The reservations are for the Grill Room, which is a separate dining area from the bar and the outside eating area. Our reservation was for 7:45 and we got seated early which was a pleasant surprise. We got the chicken lettuce wraps for our appetizer and they were delicious and they came out pretty quickly. For our entree I ordered the pork chop; medium rare and my boyfriend order the New York Strip Steam and medium rare as well; and they were both cooked perfectly. And my pork chop was the most fantastic pork chop I have ever had. The reason we are giving this restaurant a four out of five stars is because the service was a little slow(it was a pretty busy night) and our entrees tasted like it had a sat a little bit after it had been prepared. But all in all it was a fantastic meal and I would come back In heart beat!

Went here last night at about 5 pm. Service was slow even though there were about 4 servers standing around the host stand and the bar area. The decor is nice. The food runners were friendly too. Draft beer is not as cold as it should be because it was completely flat with no head on it at all. Everyone who owns a bar that serves beer should know the 38 degrees rule. The reason for this is that beer stored and served at 38 degrees F will retain the level of carbonation that was created during the brewing process. This place does not do that. The server recommended the macho nachos so we tried them. They came out very dry. It was pile of thin chips (you can't use thin chips with nachos people), with stuff on the top. Once we ate the top layer it was just a plate of broken up chip pieces with nothing on them. When I asked the server to bring something out to make them nachos again she brought out a tiny container of salsa and some sort of white sauce. It helped, but not really enough to balance out the plate. After a few more bites we quit eating because we started to feel sick. Not sure if it was from the bad food or the warm beer or a combination of both. Either way we didn't stay for dinner based on the experience of drinks and appetizers...

The chicken chili soup was cold, the creme brûlée was taken from the fridge and the topping sure wasn't done just before serving , it tasted old. The bathroom was filthy and smelled. There's got to be a better place than this in grand haven
(2)Linda D.
Pumpkin soup and chicken chili are excellent. Scallop dinner good but overpriced at $22 for three average size scallops, wilted lettuce and cranberry remoulade. More like an appetizer! Tempted to try the perch, but that's priced twice as much as any comparable restaurant around. Will do the pizza upstairs next time.
(3)Alex B.
Best food place in town!!!!!!!! Great river front view, with seating outside. Food is always great, except it seems that he fries are always cold. But no worry! They will bring you a giant bowl back. Onion ring are always good, but sometimes cold, not usually though. Great Birthday restaurant (When We Usually Go). They give, Buy $25 dollars worth of food get that free, as long as you buy same or more. We always get there prime rib during our birthdays. Even though the fries are usually cold, I give it a 5 Stars because the food is always good.
(5)Stephanie H.
The Kirby is mediocre. They raise their prices after Memorial Day and lower them again after Labor Day. The food is so-so at best and over priced. They do, however, have decent bands on the weekends and offer an ok scene to hang out on weekends or after work.
(3)Rachel R.
The Kirby House's menu suffers from a lack of middle ground. The food is all okay, but there is a huge price gap between the burgers and sandwiches ($10) and their entrees ($20). The food is okay. While it is nothing I would write home about, it is satisfying none the less. When I went there in the middle of May, they had a card promoting their "seasonal drinks" that were all winter themed. It would be nice if that were updated more regularly. This place is mediocre, and I'm sure that I will still go there when I am downtown, but I wish that they would put more effort into their menu for both food and drink.

We chose the grill room for a special birthday dinner during our girls weekend in GH. We were not disappointed. We had reservations for our group of five and were seated promptly under the good care of our server Ben. I had the seafood linguine and the seafood was well cooked if a little under seasoned. Ben was a good sport and made some recommendations of Clubs and kept our water glasses full. We overheard Ben and the bus boy discussing our table and that "position one - without a contest". Can anyone explain that phraseology :)? In any case an enjoyable meal by all and a fun if small dance club downstairs !

I'm from Atlanta, visiting my bf's family in GRap. We had lunch at The Kirby House a few days ago and it was so nice. My black bean burger topped with avocado & spicy slaw was delish, and my bf enjoyed his Cuban sandwich. I wish I could remember our waitresses name, bc she was so sweet & friendly. The whole staff was nice.

This place is set in the heart of Grand Haven and has been a mainstay in the town for years now. I recently stopped in for lunch while traveling for work and couldn't have been happier. What a great atmosphere, with the brick walls with names of patrons written on them and the modern industrial looking atmosphere. The real winner here is the menu though. I have been here a few times for dinner and have never had a bad meal and the service is excellent. This day I was here for lunch and while a bit costly for a lunch stop, it's worth a few extra bucks. I had a bacon cheeseburger and fries and it was more than any one person should eat ( I did it anyway though) and the business colleague I was with had a Reuben that looked fantastic! I also noticed they had a pizza buffet that had some nice looking specialty pies on it. I wasn't in the mood for pizza( I usually always am), but it looked great. I highly recommend Kirby as a must try dining experience!!!

A party of 6, we were seated in the bar area. Well...we kind of sat ourselves as there was some confusion with the hostess and this table looked available, lol. They send you a text when your table is ready and we got that text about 45 minutes later. At that point we were done eating..whoopsie! I got the mahi tacos. I really liked them but I could have done without the cinnamon that was part of the fish seasoning (really weird taste). The rest of the gals got the chicken wraps-rave reviews, and the steak-she cleaned her plate. Our server was great, he had a fun time joking around with all of us. It's a great place to go if you're in the Grand Haven area.
(4)Anissa C.
Our first time here. The hostesses were a tad snobby with their eye contact. They told us our table would be ready in 30 minutes. We came back about 40 min later and they did not have our table ready. After an hour they texted me, it was ready. We went to the front, it STILL was not ready. About 15 minutes later we were seated. Our hostess never refilled our waters. Even the three year who was with us had an empty glass. The only reason I didn't give this a one star because the food was pretty good. Either that or we were so hungry from waiting, that anything would've been tasty at that time.
(2)Dillon R.
Interesting layout, when you walk in it's actually 3 restaurants. We went on a Saturday so items busy and the hosts have to do tables for all 3 restaurants so there was a 10-15 minute wait which wasn't bad. We then probably waited for 20ish minutes, which isn't horrible but the way they let you know your table is ready is by texting you which I did not like. Now we get to our table, waitress is friendly, the menu has a very odd mix of foods ranging from stir fry, to pasta, to mahi tacos, to a bunch of stuff. I ordered the French dip with onion rings. The onion rings were 4 extra dollars to replace the chips it would have came with so I regret doing that because they were nothing special. My friend ordered a salad with salmon and they put chicken on it instead. However they quickly fixed their mistake. Overall pretty good place with a lot of options but nothing special.

Imagine a delicate scent of tiny feet in a play place. Disgusting to say the least. Upon arrival restaurant was unorganized and dirty tables. Got the spinach goat cheese appetizer. Didn't get plates. Ordered mango beet soup was so nasty I sent it back and still got charged for it. Our waitress leaves little to be desired. We love supporting local places but this place was a joke. Don't come here.
(1)J B.
Went there last night for dinner. Had a great meal and outstanding service. Started with Asian lettuce wraps-chicken was tasty and the sauces were flavorful. I ordered the open faced grouper sandwich with bistro fries-fish was mild and bistro fries had nice seasoning on them, and we're hot and fresh. My husband had cashew chicken dish and it was very good as well-huge serving. Waiter was outstanding-sorry I can't remember his name...very nice selection of local beer on tap. Would recommend for nice casual meal.
(4)Katie M.
I have been here many times over the past 10 years and never had a good meal except when I ordered a specialty pizza. I do love the live entertainment they bring in and the deck upstairs where you can order the pizzas.
(3)Philip W.
Sorry guys and gals, this place stinks!! No I'm not overreacting, it just plain smells really really bad. Like all of the years stale beer is still in the really bad carpeting. My wife and I went to scope out a place for 10 people to have a nice dinner and even though we visited around noon on a Tuesday, the stench was so bad we never bothered to look any further. For a place that has a great location, and a nice variety of places inside to dine, someone needs to spend some money on a little deep cleaning and take care of that awful smell and all of those cobwebs in the corners. Maybe next time.

From the outside, I had little idea of what was behind the entrance doors. After narrowly avoiding a stampede of high school girls, there had to be 50 running from the revolving doors, I entered this classic American landmark. (built in 1873) with areas to explore, my drink and dinner had to wait. The Grill at Kirby House, the more upscale dining area looked like a classic Chicago steakhouse from the early turn of the century. Heading downstairs, there is a new lounge area that was dug out below the buildings 1st floor. It was not open, but the business angle makes total sense. Heading upstairs on a wide and carpeted stairway like you might see in an expensive hotel. I felt like a character in Clue. A Monday through Friday Happy Hour food special-all you can eat wood fired pizza, pasta and salads. $1.99 sangria and wines to quench your thirst and pairs wonderfully with pizza. A refreshing Vander Mill hard cider and a portion from my friends South West chicken Quesadilla (came with a cilantro salad) was a nice quick nosh, so a Macho Nacho later (get the extra beef) and I was very satisfied. There is no doubt I will attempt to try most of the remaining menu, as I was being shown the town and our next stop was calling.

We shared the Nachos. Not bad.

I've been going to The Kirby House for years mainly because I live in Grand Haven and the food options are pretty slim. I have positives and negatives for this place. If you are strictly looking for a view head for the upstairs deck, you can get both the K2 pizza menu and the downstairs Kirby menu on this deck. It has a bar and is open air which is much better then the deck downstairs with shared picnic tables. But like I said if you are going to go somewhere for a view go to Snug Harbor deck instead. The food, starting with Kirby. I have to dog on The Gilmore Collection because it is big talk in our area and very poor quality of food. The menu is unimpressive and the food is less then so. A few good things you can get, salads, cant go to wrong there and also the mahi mahi tacos. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE HAPPY HOUR! You get one small taco for $3! Also if you look at the regular menu the prices aren't any different. The mussels here are good however which is really the only reason for the 2nd star in my rating. K2 pizza is ok. Be careful of build your own pizzas, it adds up really fast. The deck upstairs in nice but the live music is medium. Now the real treat, The Dark Room (downstairs club locally known as the Rape Room). This place is horrific for so many reasons. The music is awful, the bartenders seem like snobby bitches with crazy attitude problems but I'm sure its from dealing with all of the crazy creepers and cougars that hang out in this place. The drinks are extremely over priced as well. This is a douche bag heaven. Please don't sit on the couches (who knows whats growing in there) and be careful to not hit your head on the eye height chandeliers as you are trying to make your way through the narrow walk. I'm not saying that if you live here not to visit every once in a great while, mainly for drinks on the deck but if you are visiting our great little beach town please have some musical fountain timed out cocktails and find another place for dinner.

This place benefits from its location and the fact there isn't that much competition in the immediate area. It is a real tourist trap. Once you've been there, there is no need to return. Hopefully, the city will encourage the opening of more eateries and taverns. Then, we'll see the crowds trail off from the corner of Washington and Harbor Drive. Knowing they are the only game in town, they created a seating system so ridiculous involving a very young hostess staff giving everyone balloons which works about as efficiently as a blind drawing. That, coupled with the attitude of these individuals, makes it very difficult to want to wait for table. Per the above, there is sense of elitism making anyone wonder if you're actually welcome there. I grew up in the area but now live in Chicago. When we bring guests up there, they'll inquire about the place, however I usually steer them away. Very rarely do I breakdown and take them there - only after the dinner rush (tourists, kids, etc.) is gone to at least enjoy the bar. That is, if they ever want to leave the Tip-A-Few down the street where one can soak up the local culture, get a stiff (and cheap) drink, and enjoy a friendly staff, minus all the baggage of The Kirby.

Lunch time on a busy Sunday. Thai lettuce wraps were good. The California burger and mojito were okay. Nothing stood out though. Service was fine. We had a table by the door to the patio, so we were being buzzed by a couple flys. Annoying. Although my friend managed to Mr. Miagi one with his bare hands, more followed. An older couple in the table closest to the door changed tables because of it. Other than the great location, just plain... average.
(3)Hw H.
The two stars are for the service. The food is not good. And overpriced. We had the mess o shrimp, lettuce wraps, Parmesan chicken and Mahi tacos and baked mac and cheese. Small portions! And the shrimp sauce was really awful. The Mahi was the only good part!
(2)Ed L.
A wonderful time and great service from Desirae ... The food was wonderful and they got my friends wife steak right the first time...
(5)Suzanne S.
Kirby House is a nice, moderately priced option for dining in Grand Haven. My favorite feature is the open air card room in the summer, which has very nice views of the channel and Lake Michigan. I typically find the food to be a little disappointing here. The burgers are okay. The Macho Nachos are my favorite menu item. Kirby House has some great happy hour specials on drinks and appetizers. They have live music on weekends.
(3)Bigboss A.
Really good turkey club pizza ! Crust was crispy and the bacon and smoked turkey were very flavorful. The garlic bread was not that great. It came with cold marinara:( Overall this is a cool place to sit outside
(5)Chas D.
Not disappointed at all in the bar and grill fare. Good burger, good fries, and at a nice price. Special shout to our server Ryan, who was friendly, attentive and gave us some good local tips.

Just moved back to the area and rediscovering Grand Haven today. Decided to check out the Kirby. Atmosphere was comfortable and inviting. Sat at the bar. Started with the Calamari, which was served Mediterranean style. Presentation was great, but the flavor really feel flat. Salt goes a long ways. This appetizer has so much potential. It just needs to be seasoned. Wife ordered the "Boursin Burger" medium. Was overcooked, but flavor was fantastic. I ordered the fish tacos, which is really where my meal went off the rails. If your going to put fish taco's on your menu, you'd better do it right. I'm a traditionalist, so this menagerie of corn salsa, over cooked rice, "cheese", and aioli was a bit of an abomination. These are served disassembled, which I appreciate, but the portion was hardly enough for two, let alone the three flour tortillas provided. My thin cut portion was so dry that I had to send it back. Was brought another plate lightening fast and fish was better but still sparse. Maybe a $11.99 portion, but definitely not the $14.99 that I paid. Go for the burgers, but stay away from the fish tacos!
(3)K W.
Must try the Michelada it's the bomb!! Pizzellas at happy hour $2.99 also a great value. Came in from out of town and will be back with the wife.

I went to Kirby last weekend with a friend for lunch. We waited about 10 minutes for service and a menu. The food was okay, not fantastic. The prices were ridiculous, $10.95 for a sandwich, $3.95 for onion rings.....this is West Michigan not Chicago. We will not be returning - there are much better restaurants at more reasonable prices.
(2)Bradley O.
We visited the Kirby House during our vacation. I ordered the Mac & Cheese with Lobster. The Mac & Cheese was good, but if you think you can pass crawfish meat off as lobster, you must be crazy. Buyer beware. There is a reason why it's only a $3 up charge.
(2)Rebekah R.
Amazing Restaurant. I had the filet mignon and my husband had the sirloin. Cooked to perfection just the way we requested. Also, was not feeling that great when I went and they had an amazing selection of hot teas. Great place for a nice, romantic dinner in Grand Haven, Michigan. Great music too!!
(4)EB H.
Kirby house is delish! I had the California burger and it was very yummy! one of the people in my group that I was with had the basil vodka gimlet and LOVES it. this is a great spot to eat at in grand haven. and great location because you can walk right to the water show!
(4)Jonathan H.
This is a review for the Dark Room, a brand new club/lounge in the basement of the Kirby House. The Dark Room is a small narrow room in the basement. In my opinion this setup is probably one of the best for the West Michigan club scene as it doesn't divide up any unnecessary open space. The bar was near the crowd and the dance floor in front of the DJ. Due to the shape of the room the music is well projected forward and the modern decor reminds you you're not in a "hole in the wall". In addition, If you need a short break from it all it's easy to venture upstairs and around the Kirby House. I flew in from the west coast to meet a few old friends and also celebrate my birthday on a Saturday. The club manager, Louis, was able to arrange bottle service for my party of eight. Service was quite satisfying and in par with some bigger city clubs I've experienced. Towards the end of the evening and with the dance floor packed, our nice hostess came up to me and apologized about someone outside of our group had got carried away and scurried off with one of our half full bottles of vodka. Entertained by the incident, I was pleased when she offered to compensate the intrusion by making sure everyone in our group could have any mixed drink for free. Also a high five to the DJ and good friend known as Slim Tim, who really had the dance floor packed from the time we arrived at 10:45pm onto the closing hour. From my understanding he spins at the venue most Saturdays. If I return to West Michigan in the near future, I will likely try to come back to the Kirby House and enjoy the Dark Room again. It was a good time and I hope this place continues to grow a positive reputation in the years to come.

Located on the corner block of downtown Grand Haven, a great spot to have a good lunch with a couple friends. Choose from a buffet (which includes their pizza and a salads) or order from the menu. I'm not much a fan of pizza so I ordered a cup of pumpkin bisque and hummus & veggies from the appetizer menu. The service is friendly, prompt and attentive. Overall an enjoyable experience but if you have to use the restroom, they're located in the lower level of the building - I suddenly felt I was at a haunted house from the early 1900s decor of the basement.
(4)Rachel A.
This is a review for "The Kirby House" which I think is the main place. Meh. The service was very attentive and friendly, but the food just didn't have much to it. I had the greek chicken pasta. Chicken was fine, toppings were nice, but the sauce consisted of a fairly tasteless chicken broth and nothing else. My husband had the fish special which was equally unimpressive. The atmosphere is really nice, maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but just very bored with the food.
(3)Corey R.
I'm just confused on what kind of restaurant this is. My scallops were delicious and presented beautifully, yet my sister's fish was served in a basket with wax paper and soggy french fries. No one at our table ordered the prime rib but it looked awesome when the waitress brought it out to the table next to ours. My aunt used the downstairs bathroom (guess we should have read Yelp before we walked in) and she came back terrified. Think I'll just stick with Dee Lite from now on when I'm in Grand Haven.
(3)Rudy M.
My wife and I have visited Kirby House twice. Our first visit was on our seven year anniversary. For that visit, we were seated on the patio. It was a warm summer night and very romantic- until, that is, the staff seated a family of four at OUR table with us. Apparently, the patio is "cafateria" seating and we had extra space at our table. This was never mentioned to us or asked of us even knowing it was our anniversary. We spoke with the manager who said they get this complaint a lot. On our second visit, we were joining a second couple who were seated before us. I mentioned to the hostess that we were joining another couple who would have just been seated. She said we were free to look around. We could not find our friends because they'd been seated in an off area. Assuming they weren't here yet, we asked for a table for four. The hostess said she had sat our friends in another area and she led us right to their table. Why hadn't she led us to begin with? We wasted five minutes looking ourselves when the hostess could have shown us to the table to start! The food was good but no match for bad service.
(2)Matthew R.
Apparently there is more to this place than just the pizza upstairs. Which is all I experienced here and all I shall be writing about. My family had been here and quite enjoyed it, raving and such about it. Definitely got me excited. The pizza selections were fabulous. Really want to go back and try more, but that would mean having to go back to Michigan ha-ha. Each pizza is a personal size which I think, always helps when it comes to big parties. Good beer selection too. The restaurant is very interesting inside with all the decorations and everything. Lots of room too. Add some great service and this place was definitely a wonderful experience. Seems like this is the place to go to in Grand Haven. Definitely worth checking out! So GENIUS.
(4)Kathy G.
Great food, reasonable prices, fun atmostphere. The rooftop deck has the best view of downtown. Take advantage of their amazing happy hour specials like $1.99 sliders, cosmos, and well drinks. On weekends, the downstairs gets rowdy with the live music- although it's more of an older crowd. The upstairs level is younger people, a little more chill, although the floor has carpeting so it kind of smells. The rooftop deck is the place to be. Really nice atmosphere and hipper crowd up there.
(4)Casey K.
I went to the upstairs pizza room with a friend. The hostess didn't acknowledge us for a while so we were confused as to where to go. Once we were seated, it took about ten minutes for a waitress to come to our table. Basically it is a student run section- they all were gathered by the kitchen talking and drinking and totally oblivious to customers. It just was not professional. Once we actually got a waitress, service wasn't awful, and neither was the food. They could probably use a manager, though. I wouldn't go back because frankly it was just annoying.
(3)Kurt W.
Terrific evening, great staff, outstanding food. Ate in the grill room
(5)Mike M.
We just finished an excellent dining experience at the Kirby House. 2 families, 4 adults, 5 kids. We sat outside street level. Great atmosphere, great service Adrienne, great food. Highly recommend the scallops, lobster Mac n cheese, and Mahi tacos. Enjoy!

As I spent Sunday in Grand Haven, I found myself here before and after the shower I was attending. We got into town about an hour early and decided a glass of wine was in order...I tried to order 2 different glasses and they were out....uh, ok...3rd time was a charm I guess... However, it gets better and by better I mean the best effing nachos ever better. I am not sure if the cheese was a white cheddar or mozzarella or what but it was GOOD as was the bomb ass lime cilantro(which I normally don't like) drizzled on top...complete with fresh salsa, corn and my fav to any mexican dish-black beans these were truly a home run on the nacho front...when you don't need extra salsa, guac or sour cream for your nachos you know they are doing something right! My travel companions also agreed we were bummed we couldn't get nachos anything like this back at home. Now, I haven't had any other food here, but from what I saw coming out of the kitchen it all looked good... After the shower, we went back as the weather warmed up to sit on the patio which has a gorgeous view of the lake, complete with a full bar. I ordered the same wine I did earlier and they even still had it!! wow! It was a great end to a beautiful day. OH and ladies, if you use the upstairs bathroom and over 5 feet tall, use the handicap stall...the lowest toilets to the ground ever. I know it's an old building and all and people used to be shorter, but jeez, give the gals a break for the power squatting!!!!!
(4)Rob S.
I don't have a whole lot to add. The burgers were good, the beer was cold, our server was excellent, the price was fair. (Although I just now re-figured what the tip should have been and realized that I had done it wrong at the time and tipped pretty meagerly. Sorry...). We had walked past this place for years and I had always wanted to have dinner/drinks in the main level deck (?... it's not really a deck, maybe a porch?) while watching the world go by, and we finally did so this past weekend. It was nice, but I was surprised at how noisy it was. I shouldn't have been surprised; it's right next to the busy street, but loud cars and bikes would drown any attempt at conversation. That's not the restaurant's fault at all, just something to keep in mind if you go. Best to sit inside.
(3)Candace W.
The Quesadilla was the best I have ever had. But, the waitress was awful and it was very loud and stressing. But I would go back just for the Chicken Quesadilla. Amazing.
(3)Corry M.
Meh, one of the better restaurants in the heart of Grand Haven but it's expensive and relatively small servings compared to that price. It's good though if you got the cash.
(3)Kelly H.
The rooftop deck is a nice treat on the summer day, but not very clean. Soon I saw why...the waitresses would wipe off the tables & get food all over the chairs & floor. Nachos (lettuce, beef, cheese, you name it...) all over the place. Look carefully at what you're ordering if you're getting a pizza. The create your own pizza is often 2/3 the price for the exact same toppings as some of the specialty pizzas. Food wasn't that great. I keep hoping to finally find somewhere in Grand Haven that I love, but so far, everything seems sub-par.

I wish my husband and I had been able to eat here. Unfortunately, customer service was so terrible that we walked out before we had the chance. We walked into the front door on a Saturday evening and waited 10-15 minutes in line to speak with the hostess. We had to greet her and ask how long the wait would be, since she stood and stared at us without saying a word. At this point, she showed us two menus: one for upstairs, one for down. We wanted to eat upstairs and asked her to put our name in. At this point, we were told there was a separate hostess upstairs (we had seen people just walking upstairs as we waited, but figured they were joining their parties). There was no sign indicating that upstairs was a separate entity with a different hostess. Still, the menu looked great, so we went upstairs... And waited in line behind 3 parties that had bypassed us while we waited for the downstairs hostess. After 10 more minutes of waiting, we asked the hostess upstairs (who was also unfriendly) what the wait would be for two upstairs outside. Her answer? "There is a different hostess for outside." Are you kidding me?! By this time, hubby and I had already spent 20 minutes in line to talk to two hostesses and had nothing to show for it. We had to track down the outside hostess and were informed the wait would be 50 minutes.... We left and went to Snug Harbor. Seriously, Gilmore Group, get some signs up letting patrons know where to wait to speak with the hostess they need. Otherwise, use the iPads on one system to allow hostesses across the different zones of the restaurant to put names in for any area. Unacceptable and comical. Will not be back.

We both Had the Kobe Oscar steak. OMG!!! The best steak I've had in a long long time. Service was very good also, very attentive. Aaron, you did a great job.

Great spacious seating area, nice patio looking over the Lake, and at the end of a very cute strip of shops in a little beach town. However, this was the longest wait for a mediocre wrap that I have ever experienced....maybe it had something to do with the weddding party there, and we weren't rushed, but 2 hours for a meal that turned out to be nothing better than a bar-food filler was a little over the top. Nice place to hang out though.

in the dark Room --- DJ Slim you rock the house! Take it from someone who has lined it up for the city of the Angels... You Rocked the House!! Thank you boss man!

dined at kirby on sunday for lunch. 1st time there. had calamari appetizer which was excellent. its not your usual deep fried calamari. it s prepared in a soupy base with dipping bread. I did not appreciate the xtra charge for more dipping bread. Don't bother with the mahimahi tacos. not worth your $15 and it was suppose to be the chef's specialty. My fish tacos whose recipe I got from a hole in a wall in los angeles are better than this. Overall, it was an ok experience but I expected much more from a Gilmore Collection Restaurant. I will say that the bartender was great and very accommodating. I just found the menu a bit pricy for what we got. I later read from a tripadsor review that prices are jacked up during the summer. Well, that just too bad because it did not leave us a good impression. We will try other places nect time.

Went to the upstairs pizza place for dinner. We had been to the more formal restaurant in the Kirby complex last year for a nicer dinner but decided pizza with kids is a better idea this year. The pizzas were awesome. I had the caprese and husband had the meatsa, shared with the kid. They were good and filling. Our waiter was pretty attentive and we sat outside since it was a beautiful day. The table needed some maintenance as it was pretty rickety, but other than that, it was a nice dinner. Would go again when we can have some drinks and sit awhile. Great location and view!!

My favorite part of the Kirby House is their outdoor patio in the summer - great views and a fun atmosphere. Sometimes their wait staff are a little annoying (on the younger side) but overall a fun time! The inside is fun too - except the billiards area has a funky smell. The downstairs bar area is great and gets packed on a Saturday night. Make sure you have some cash they usually charge a cover unless you eat dinner their. And FYI - I recommend the upstairs bathroom to the basement bathroom in addition... per my dad's experience MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR BILL for accuracy....

The place looks great with cool live music, but, the 1st floor bar area has a very moldy smell. I had dinner on the 1st floor fine dining section and was very impressed. The presentation of my salmon was divine, the taste superb and the service excellent. I will go back for a dinner anytime!

dined here twice within 5 days. first time was downstairs - some of the food the group had - lobster mac n cheese, cucumber bisque, philly steak dip sandwich. second time upstairs - different menu - bbq chicken wood oven pizza, shrimp scampi wood oven pizza. all food was unique and darned tasty. wait staff was accomodating for all of our needs. even arranged tables so we could view the musical fountain across the river at nightfall. I HIGHLY recommend this dining experience.

Ate at the patio for lunch- service slow. Food very OK but not memorable

The food is good, menu's vary depending where you eat (there are 3 restaurants within the kirby house) and the atmosphere is always nice. The building is historic and adds charm to your meal. Staff can be snooty, but otherwise good! Pizza is AWESOME upstairs at the K2

I spend a lot of time at the Grand Haven beach in the summer, and this is often a place I'll eat at. There are multiple floors with different food options. Pizza on the roof, bar and restaurant on the main floor. I usually eat in the card room which is open air on the main floor. The food is good, but can be expensive.

This place is really fun and has good food but only if you go there on a non-touristy evening (so no summer weekends, no holidays, etc). The few times I've been there during these times, I felt like I was at a frat party for 15 year olds... not good. Plus the management was completely unresponsive, inflexible and rude when we tried to book our 25-person wedding rehearsal dinner here. I wish I could love this place, but I just keep getting turned off.

not bad, not great. food is good but not interesting and somewhat bland overall. the location is great in downtown new haven and I loved that the walls were all covered in crayon.

Had lunch here a couple years ago and the food was decent. Last fall, left the kids home with Grandma and went drinking like college kids with a pretty large group (over 10) of the relations. From what little I remember they have the dueling-piano thing which is loads of fun. Also, upstairs, the video beanbag game - who knew how fun that could be?!? (OK, so maybe I don't get out much!!!) Good pizza, a great complement to all those drinks. This is a great downtown location especially on warm summer nights.

The last time I had visited Kirby was about 15 years ago. I remembered it fondly, so I decided to go there recently. It has become purposefully more elegant in its decor, and it aims to be so with a menu that is largely recognizable. There are still things to like about it - the unmistakable building, the flat-screen TVs, and the sense that you're someplace everybody wants to be. But with the attempt at being more upscale, out went the charm and the taste of the food. The calamari was OK, though there was barely any of it. The hamburger I decided to try because I was in the mood was one of the worst excuses for a burger I have ever had. OK, I get it - they presumably want you to have anything but a hamburger. It's not their source of pride. But if the rest of your food is supposed to be so good, you should know how to make a great hamburger. Throw some great toppings on there, for crying out loud. Instead, what you get is a bland, disappointing experience. And the fries they make you pay extra for above the chip level meal? Bland too, and you barely get any of them. I spent as much on that terribly disappointing meal as I would on a ton of sushi and dumplings at one of the best sushi places in W. Michigan. And the waif staff doesn't seem to know what they're doing. They seem to be more interested in looking stylish and impressing each other than providing quality service. That quality pretty much matches the food. Is it bad food? No. Just grossly underwhelming, especially for how much you pay for it.

EXCELLENT food, clever seasonal drink specials. This would get 5 stars if the decor was updated & waitstaff were more spunky. We've been here several times, all before 7pm, and its nice for a family, though I can tell it fills with a party crowd at night. Variety of seating from upstairs deck, to covered outdoor patio, to hightops & booths inside. The chef gets my applause for flavor, variety, & seasonal/local ingredients. You can gt a burger and fries, or one of a kind saeasoned scallop dish with yummy greens on top. Gluten free & vegetarian are clearly marked. Waitstaff is fairly knowledgeable, but quickly offered to find out if they couldn't answer my questions.

Had some great food here! Soft shell crab Po' Boy was so worth the price! And the Bananas Foster for dessert had an amazing presentation! My friend had the crème brulé, which was delicious! Will be back for their Spanish coffee!!

The place is overrated and overpriced. Don't bother.

Disappointed by the Kirby House this go-round. Back story: my parents and I used to go here all the time from about 2000-2004, when I was going to Blue Lake. I remembered the food as being really good. Fast-forward to 2015, we came here on a Friday night for dinner. It has a rooftop area of sorts but they only serve pizza there, so we sat inside in the "Kirby House" part. I ordered a burger and it was $11.95 ... all you get with it is chips, if you want to substitute fries or onion rings it's another $1.95-$2.95. Burger was okay, nothing special. My friends ordered the Asian chicken wraps and the grilled brie; the one who ordered the brie thought it was very good (and I thought that as well), and the one who ordered the wraps seemed like she thought they were just okay too. I'm a little disappointed because I remembered Kirby as being so much better ... I want to say I used to get a steak sandwich there but it's not on the menu anymore (though I could just be making that up, because it was a while ago). Service was just meh too, it took a while for us to get water refills even though our waiter PASSED BY US carrying a water pitcher, and we pointedly put our cups by the edge of the table. Check out Portobello's across the street if you're looking for a good meal, we had a great Italian meal there the day after.

Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Need I say more?

Went here for the first time with my daughter on vacation. Ordered a few drinks which was made with a lot of tonic water even though not on menu. Watered down and tasteless. Ordered the Parmesan chicken which was delicious but contained three pieces of asparagus four artichokes, and the smallest chicken breast ever. The dish was yummy but needed some angel hair pasta or something. Left hungry. Was like five bites of food. Not worth the price, no bread basket nothing. ,;(

Overall I think the prices are WAY too high, but its a great location and servers are top notch. The nachos were honestly some of the best we have ever had: fresh tomato and corn, melted cheese throughout, not just on the top, and HUGE! 1 order is basically dinner for 2 people. The crab-avocado appetizer was amazing as well and I had that for my entree. I didn't realize it but they serve it on a bed of mixed greens so its like a salad. And its a whole avocado! So while pricey, I think its a pretty decent value at least for the apps. The rooftop patio is amazing!! They only serve pizza/sandwiches up there which was slightly disappointing, but its a great place for drinks on a nice day.

The Kirby Grill used to have a delicious menu. Was really disappointed recently by the quality of the menu and food. K2 and the Grill Room have a much better menu. Now Kirby is overpriced for really lackluster food.
(2)Sara M.
Fast friendly service, dog friendly patio, gluten free options. Ordered wild Alaskan salmon with fingerling potatoes. The salmon had a delicious flavoring but a little dry. Some of the potatoes were undercooked and raw in the middle. Over all lunch was good but I would try something else next time I'm in Grand Haven.
(3)Jing S.
I just totally do not understand why those who wants to have dinner here must show the photo ID.
(2)Michael D.
The service was solid. The rooftop deck was beautiful with a lovely view. The food, however isn't fit for human consumption.
(2)Kait B.
The food and drinks were very unimpressive. We got some lemonade and they cost like $4 each and didn't taste good. They are very pricey here and the food was just not good. The service was pretty bad too. Also bring ear plugs if they have a band playing its so loud you can't even talk to your table and we were in the back of the restaurant!
(1)Rachel W.
This place is okay. Was cooler when writing on the walls was a big thing. Fries taste like cinnamon in a good way. There's actually no happy hour so don't count on that. I think they discontinue it during the summer, which is annoying. My friend ordered Thai lettuce wraps and she got a plate full of the ingredients, had to assemble the wraps herself. Other friend got a salad and everything was kinda soft. The place is okay, nothing special. Grand Haven institution I guess.

While the physical location was great and the food was okay the service was so atrocious that makes it impossible to ever go back. After waiting nearly 90 minutes for a table upstairs and watching 10 tables that were open and available for an hour but nobody around to bus them we finally canceled our name on the list and went downstairs and put our name on that list. Wouldn't believe when the identical thing happened downstairs. Hostess and the waitress were openly complaining about other servers and management in front of us. Five hours after we arrived we finally finished our meal without ever being checked on or asked if we wanted another drink. The worst service I've ever had.

So awful. My friend was assaulted by a bouncer after trying to come back to the dance floor after going to the bathroom. She was trying to side step the bouncer when he put two hands on her chest and pushed her so hard that she landed flat on her back. He then preceded to drag her by her upper arms up the stairs, slamming her head into the corners and dragging her back along the stairs, two floors, completely using aggressive physical force to throw her out the back door. This whole thing was completely unprovoked and unnecessary for a girl who was neither drunk nor unreasonable. Never once was she simply asked to leave or allowed to use her own two feet. The incident was so awful that we called the police immediately to file a report. If nothing else that bouncer needs to be immediately fired. So awful that it's hard to put into words. Please don't give this place your business.

Stopped here for a quiet mid-week lunch. It was a pleasant experience. Wait staff was attentive. I had the salmon sandwich. (Forgot it's actual name) It was INCREDIBLE! I'm still thinking about it two days later....
(4)Megan B.
This place is great! Great burgers and pizza. If you sit outside they always have live singing and music. My only concern was the food comes out in 6 minutes which means it's just frozen meals that they cook or microwave. When I go there, it's not really fresh or new. They just have spills everywhere and tons of breaking dishes. This would be a choice if I really had to go.

We had a long wait to get a table because we went during Pirate Fest so it was a busy night. It was not a problem to wait at all though because they text you, so you can go walk along the water while you are waiting. Nice. They did underestimate our wait time; it was double what they'd predicted, which is never appreciated. But that kind of thing doesn't bother me much. My date and I ordered 2 different sandwiches and shared - they were both really good, but not remarkable. You could order the same sandwich just about anywhere and it would taste about the same. The location is prime and the atmosphere was pretty cool - by the time we got out of here at like 10:00 they had live music starting and it was crowded - but the service was not up to par. We waited at least 45 minutes for our food and never got drink refills, plus our server was just unfriendly. The service really left a bad taste in my mouth after we waited for as long as we did to get into this place. I don't expect to return. I also would never recommend this place for kids, just due to the long wait for food and the inattentive waitstaff.

Perch over cooked, wanted a little better dinner, this was not the place. Maybe it was late for the kitchen. Was it worth $ 20 bucks.....Late breaking news...they removed it from the bill. My server was very nice. Good music .

Food was prepared promptly. Had lunch here with a business associate. Server was attentive and not so attentive that we has to stop our business meeting. Ate Greek vegetable salads and perch. Meal presentation was great. Will be back for sure

I expected a better experience. The atmosphere was nice but many of our meals were bad. Eight of us went to the Kirby House for dinner last night. I had the mushroom burger. I couldn't find any mushrooms to speak of and the burger was a thin burnt meat patty. A friend had the salmon which was tasteless and came with crunchy rice. My seasoned fries were $2 extra upgrade from the chips but seamed stale and were missing the seasons. When I asked to have the seasoning brought out I was told that they were busy. I spoke to the manager who offered to give us desserts on the house. They brought out a couple of very small slivers of cake. Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

window view quite nice ` now the floors are sticky and your shoes get sticky; the carpet to restroom is then and shabby and smelly and bathrooms are smelly, come back up across sticky floors to your table and the presentation looks great but the food is TASTELESS. and EXPENSIVE so that is two big dings at the table. Would not go back - shops along the waterline are much better, friendly, great food, great price, and layer back,

Our first time in Grand Haven. We didn't realize it was Coast Guard days so the streets were packed. Kirby's was right there so we stopped. This place was big and had plenty of seating. We sat on the covered patio. It was nice but cold. The food was okay but nothing special. I just had a burger and it was average. My daughter had a kids pizza which was a bit on the small side. My wife and other daughter had chicken Caesar salads and they liked them. Overall, it was okay but not great.
(2)Ben B.
First, the Kirby is overrated, and if you have been to a Gilmore collection place before, you have been to them all. The Pizza in K2 is good woodoven pizza, but I go here for the view in the summer. In the winter, they run great happy hour specials, but those get pulled out from under us locals during the summer. The darkroom downstairs is interesting. The only "club" in Grand Haven and there are usually hoards of cougars on the prowl. The Grill Room is a nice place to eat if you want to drop some cash, however, I prefer The Grand a block away for fine dinning, and more seafood options. Everytime I walk by the place, there is a cheezy cover band playing in the window, or worse, dueling pianos... Overall, The Kirby is able to capitalize on its sheer size and location and charge customers more in the summer than the winter. Value wise I would give it 2 stars, but they do have a great deck up top, and the only club in the city in the basement, so they get one more star. Try a tripple loc dogger from the deck bar in the summer.
(3)Chris Z.
Ate dinner with some friends and was pleasantly disappointed with the meal. Entrees seemed clumsily thrown together. I had a charred BLT salad and it was literally half a head of romaine lettuce with some bacon dumped on top. I've never cut so much lettuce. Wait staff was reasonably helpful, if a bit forgetful about drink orders. Also had an order of calamari which was soggy and likely microwaved.
