They are very authentic, the "mama" the name refers to is occasionally in the kitchen I'm told. Good size menu & portions, plenty of appetizers & they have a section of more well known Chinese dishes for customers afraid to leave their comfort zone yet.

I ordered the chicken pad Thai. I ordered this to go. The 2 women working the counter were very nice and answered all my questions regarding the entree. The ordered was filled quickly and the portion was large. As much as I wanted to give this restaurant a completely positive review the actual dish was only mediocre. I will not be returning to this restaurant. I moved from a different state and lived in a city that is known for their outstanding restaurants. I may be a bit jaded so please try this restaurant for yourself. Plus I have only tried the one dish so the other dishes may be of a higher quality.

Great little addition to an otherwise boring area for eateries. Nothing in a bun or in a cone...in West Michigan!! The TomYum soup was great the first few months they were open. It's been way too salty the last 2 visits. Portions can be skimpy on some dishes. Pleasant staff. I hope they do well, we need the diversity!

Thrilled to finally get fresh Thai without having to drive to Grand Rapids. Summer Rolls! Loved everything about it, but plan on being patient at the dinner hour as they can be pretty swamped. Worth it.

This is my go-to for take-out or when the mood strikes for some Asian cuisine. The menu is not exclusively Thai and if you like spicy, you need to ask for some heat. We ordered steamed dumplings, pad thai and pad see ew and enjoyed every bite! It's fairly busy and the service is good too. Sure hope this little Grand Haven gem sticks around.

First of all, I'm Thai (born and raised in Thailand), so I think I have enough authenticity to say if the food is authentic or not. The food here (at least what I ordered) is sadly not. Don't get me wrong, the food tasted ok, but it's not any where near authentic. If I eat it with my eyes closed, i would never guess it's Thai food. I guess I should have noticed the very first sign (egg drop and hot and sour soup on the menu!! Really?!?) but I wanted to try anyway. My friend and I ordered Almond Boneless Chicken (I had no idea what that dish would be if it were served in Thailand). The sauce was very bland and the presentation was nothing to be desired. We also order Pad Thai. It tasted strange and very saucy and no peanut mixed in or on the side. Lastly we ordered Pad Prik Khing. It tasted like any stir fried meat and vegetables at Chinese restaurant but spicy. It didn't have the taste Prik Khing should have (strong prik khing curry paste with kaffir lime leaves). On a positive note, the service was nice. I even saw the owner/chef walked out of the kitchen and talked to some customers, which was a nice touch. I think this place has a potential to be better. Please give customers a real Thai food. That's what they are going there for.

Was hoping to discover a great authentic Thai place closer to home than the one we drive to Holland for. This isn't authentic. It wasn't the worst I have had but I wouldn't go there again. I love Thai curry and theirs was strangely over sweet. It tasted like cinnamon sugar. I wasn't a fan. My husband felt his Pad Pak tasted like the basic Chinese American you get at a inauthentic buffet. This place is new so it might improve but we will keep going to Thai Palace 30 minutes away.

It's good. Straight forward Thai fare, nothing fancy or stunning, but solid, familiar Thai style dishes. Couldn't ask for much more.

I have zero idea who these people are who think this place isn't great. Probably ignorant West Michiganders who have never been out of the state. Not authentic?? That made me laugh. The food is about as authentic as it gets. The owners barely speak English and the food is as authentic as any Thai food I have ever had. And yes, I have been outside of West Michigan and have had Thai food in NY, San Francisco, Chicago, Tampa, etc. I am extremely picky because I have friends who are from Thailand and who have taught me to cook many authentic Thai dishes. Guess what? There's more to Thai food than Pho and Pad Thai. The people writing that this food isn't "authentic" only reference Pad Thai and Pho. Sorry people, if those are the only two dishes you can talk about, you don't know authentic Thai food. Sit down and be quiet and go to the Asian Buffet and enjoy your gross buffet food. Also, who on earth would call this place expensive??? That literally made me laugh out loud. The beef larb is $7!! It is a very large portion and is made fresh with expensive and quality herbs veggies and meat. It takes awhile to come out but that's because the owner is back there MAKING IT FROM SCRATCH. Its delicious. My best friend, who happens to be Thai, and I eat there for lunch every Saturday and we are never less than thrilled. The summer rolls are so fresh that you can taste every herb and veggie in every bite. We have never had a bad bite of food and trust me, we are very picky about Thai food. I also had to laugh when another reviewer called the owner arrogant! The very first time we came in to eat the owner came out to say hello because she wanted to see who was ordering so much food and authentic items off the menu. She stood and talked to us for 10 minutes and even invited me to come back some time so that she could teach us how to make Larb. My friend and I told her that we had both been trying to make Larb at home and couldn't quite get it right. She said that she would teach us any time we wanted. Now that we are regulars, she sends us out special items that are not even on the menu for us to taste. Yesterday she made us sticky rice (which isn't a quick thing to whip up) and sent it out to us. The entire family works there and are all very knowledgeable and friendly. The wait staff is very friendly too. It's a new restaurant so maybe they don't know every detail of the menu yet but if they don't have an answer, they go ask and get the answer. They are very attentive and sweet and always make us feel welcome. I absolutely LOVE the food and the owner and the staff. I am beyond thrilled that the Grand Haven area finally has a great Thai restaurant. I moved to this area from NY and am often sad about the lack of good ethnic food in the area. I am so happy that Mama's Thai Cafe is open and I will be eating there weekly and telling everyone I know to do the same!

I love living in the Muskegon area, but it's been sadly lacking in the Thai food department. Which in the big picture shouldn't be that big a deal except I really love Thai food. Too much of my life revolves around food :/ Anyway, I was nervously excited when I saw the coming soon sign for Mama's Thai Cafe in Grand Haven. Nervous because I've had amazing Thai food, horrible Thai food, and a whole lot of in between. I was hoping for amazing here, but I wasn't really counting on it. I'm easily disappointed. So I'll start right off by saying that on my first visit I was not at all disappointed. It may take a few more visits before I can use the word amazing with confidence, but if my first time was any indication, I'm sure many more visits there are in my future. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy. It's a rather stark, open space with a bunch of tables. But that's not a bad thing. For me, a restaurant experience is mostly about experiencing the food. The decor and whatnot won't make up for lousy food. So the place isn't ugly at all - it's just no-frills. The food has to be what keeps you coming back, which is how it should be. Everyone working there seemed to be very friendly. Our waitress was a beautiful young lady with a tattoo of what appeared to be a bottle of hot sauce on her arm. Which has nothing to do with anything other than I've never seen a tattoo of a bottle of hot sauce before. Because of the time of day (mid-afternoon on a Thursday) the food came out quickly. Mid-afternoons on weekdays are typically a very slow time for restaurants, so I considered it a good omen that there were several other occupied tables when we arrived. I started with the Fresh Summer Rolls, which are often known elsewhere as Fresh Spring Rolls or Steamed Spring Rolls. The main point being that they're not the fried ones, whichever season you assign to them. I won't say they're the best I've ever had, but they were really good. Like, maybe second best. I was surprised to see some regular-size shrimp in them, so if you don't like shrimp be warned. I'm sure you can get them without the shrimp. Since I do like shrimp I wasn't complaining. I've never been a huge fan of hot and sour soup but the soup that came with the meal was quite tasty. I would definitely order it again. Since I wasn't in the mood for a heavy curry dish (which is what I would normally go for) I decided to try the Peanut Curry Pad Thai with shrimp, which didn't bear much resemblance to actual Pad Thai but was outstanding nonetheless. The blend of flavors was perfect. The sauce didn't have that weird powdery texture that a lot of Thai places seem to offer. If you've had it you know what I mean. This was creamy/smooth and really, really, really good. Heatwise, I opted for medium to be on the safe side, and it was a good choice. It was pretty spicy, so I imagine their "hot" would be unbearable for most. I didn't have a desert, so that was it for the meal. All in all, for a first-time visit it was absolutely five-star. And the pricing was more than reasonable too. My only complaint/recommendation would be for my girlfriend, who is not at all adventurous with food and rarely steps out of her chicken finger comfort zone. There was nothing here for her to eat, which for this visit was ok since we'd planned ahead with our meals and knew she'd be getting something elsewhere. But since most of us have that one person in our lives who won't touch anything "weird", there really should be a few options like chicken fingers for them. I may have missed it but I didn't see anything like that on the menu. It would make it easier for people like me to be able to eat here more often. Please give this place a try! Even great restaurants can have trouble making it these days - especially if they're not part of some big corporate entity. It's important to support locally-owned businesses, and when one is this good it needs to stick around. That's up to us. If the quality remains consistent, it should be easy enough to do.

I've been here probably 6 times since they've opened. Awesome food, fresh, hot, and usually pretty fast. The staff is super friendly friendly. I've loved everything I've gotten so far. And hope to eventually try everything
