This is the best spot along the boardwalk to stop for a quick, easy, delicious lunch. You won't be disappointed.

Got the chicken supreme burrito and enjoyed it. Kids had the beef tacos and LOVED them. Had to go back for more. Definitely a stop we'll make again.

Fresh, fast, made to order Tex-Mex food. I was pleased with my beef burrito - they did not skimp on ingredients and the food is reasonably priced. If you come here expecting "authentic Mexican food" you may be disappointed, but if you don't mind more Americanized Mexican food made fast after a long day at the beach - it's just the ticket.

A chicken burrito supreme would be one of my last meals. Butchs isn't supposed to be "authentic" mexican food. It's just a good beach burrito place that is a grand haven staple. To those who want authentic don't go to a place with a name like Butchs...

Very difficult to find. I've had better microwave nachos and burritos from my high school cafeteria. We will NOT be back. Go to Taco Bell instead

Some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had, not even close to authentic. We were starving and it still tasted horrible. Burritos are $5 each, and for the size, a complete joke. I'm convinced this place only survives due to its location.

We have had a cottage in Grand Haven for years and have heard great things about Butch's but never had gone there, so we finally decided to give it a try. I got the chicken burrito and chips/salsa. It was pretty good. The prices were good, portions big and employees were very friendly. The one thing I didn't like, and it was probably my fault for not noticing, was that the burrito had lettuce on it. I didn't think most burritos had lettuce. But, I should have ordered it without. We'll give it another try but without the lettuce. Their salsa was really good!! And they have a great location. It's nice to sit outside and watch the boats go by.

This place is not good, even for a little shack on the beach. I stopped in and for a veggie burrito plus a side order of chips and guac. For a place that only has tacos, burritos and hot dogs on the menu, they Butch-ered mine; the burrito was split open on one end and falling apart on the other. Nothing to the food, a lot of beans, rice, and some pickled peppers. The $3 guac container wasn't even half full but it was fully devoid of flavor. Maybe they do other items better, but I wouldn't go back.

We had no intention of eating in Grand Haven. We packed a cooler and a bag of food for a day at the beach but this place drew us in! A short wait in line and we were noshing on a Chicken Supreme and Beef Supreme burrito. I definitely enjoyed the Beef more but the Chicken was tasty. I normally don't like spicy but the 1 alarm salsa was extremely mild. I tried the 2 alarm salsa and it was definitely more my level. The line moved fast and the food came out quick. We took our burritos across the street to sit on a bench and watch the boats go in and out. Definitely worth a trip in!

I don't get the hype, other than the location. Nice place to grab a burrito, nice place to stand in line, but not a great burrito.

  • Katy C.

Butch's Beach Burritos is an institution. Get there early and order extra. You won't regret it. Just FYI, this salsa is NOT hot, get the 3-alarm you'll be fine.

  • James S.

Cool place, near the beach. Friendly service. Food was pretty generic tasting. My boys had hot dogs which were fine (they're hot dogs after all). I had a burrito supreme. The meat was very bland and overall the thing lacked flavor. Prices were reasonable.

The food is ok. Got the job done but I would have been just as happy if I had packed a sandwich to eat.

This is American/Mexican food. But it is Good, Fresh AM/MEX food. It is very unique...I've never had anything like it anywhere else. Just don't expect south of the boarder mexican food. Butches delivers the same food each summer and summer only. Consistent AM/MEX style with americanized hot sauce also...i.e picante style.. Stand in line, order, pay and get your food before you walk out the door to the OUTSIDE ONLY seating. It's not fancy. It's beach food. It's good beach food. It's fast, the drinks are a ripoff, the burittos a bit small but relatively inexpensive, the view toward the beach is great and if your at the beach it's better than the food at the beach snack shack. Take the short hike from the beach across the road to Butches. We go once a summer with the kids who love it. And so do I.

Easy and fast ordering. Nice outdoor eating and views. The food was just ok and wouldnt come back unless I wanted something quick. Lots of room for improvement and need something to new or different to draw me back. Examples, organic. Local or something.

I had a beef burrito here. Not only it was as skinny as taquitos, the beef was actually ground beef, and only beans and cheese inside. This place does not even have mexican rice. I am used to authentic mexican food, so this place was a big surprise for me. My friends from this area say that this place is so good. I feel sorry for those people for not knowing good authentic mexican food. There was nothing wrong with the service though.

  • Chris C.

Food was mediocre at best. Burritos were cold, very little meat, mostly lettuce. Do not order the 'Chips & Cheese', it's a handful of tortilla chips with shredded cheese on top then microwaved for like $5. Old guy at counter (possibly Butch himself) was rude. The only reason this place could still be in business is their proximity to the beach. Big disappointment!

Gotta say - don't really get the high rating this place has so far (currently a 4). I had a beef burrito supreme - it was fine. Not good, not bad... ok. Husband had beef burrito and he did not like it. (He pondered how the beef got to the particular color that it was.) Since they sell their bottle salsa, I'm assuming that's well liked around the area - and it did seem good. Service was good. Location was good. The fact that they have a parkiing lot with available parking in it is a double bonus - makes it easy to go there. Would I return? No, don't think so. Would I recommend? Probably not.

Mediocre burritos with a welcoming atmosphere.

Good place to stop by for quick lunch if you are at the grand haven state park Had the veggie burrito with 2 alarm (medium level hot stuff ). It was quite tasty and the price was very reasonable. The portion size left me wanting for more, but I refrained.

The secret to success is to be true to who you are. Butch's is exactly that. They owe no apologies. It's a beach-side burrito joint that's an untouchable institution in Grand Haven. It's not authentic Mexican - they make no attempt to be. There are no complex flavor profiles here. It's pretty bland but you can take it up a notch with their hot salsa, which is delicious. It's fresh, satisfying food and you can feel comfortable eating there when you're all sticky and sandy from the beach. Plus you have an awesome view of the channel. If you want authentic Mexican go to Lupita's in Detroit's Mexican Town - best tacos ever, but there's no beach.

  • Food F.

This is one of those places people where people go because, well, they have always gone there and it is an 'institution'....which just means grandma and grandpa had no idea what a burrito was supposed to taste like. Enjoy the tradition, because the food is awful. Luckily there are some good Mexican joints in Grand Haven, this isn't one of those.

A Grand Haven classic. Whatever kind of review I or other Yelpers write on here this burrito stand has a cult following among locals and tourists, and will be here for what I expect to be a very long time. Come here for the burritos, obviously. But know that the burritos here taste like the ones you make at home out of ingredients from Meijer, from the flour tortilla to the shredded cheese and salsa. Not that this is bad thing, but it's not what I picture when I imagine a "restaurant-quality" burrito. Definitely don't come if you're expecting authentic Mexican. But the lightness of flavor and texture are great for the beach atmosphere; they're not too greasy or filling and go great with the cool air floating off of lake Michigan on a hot day. While I like the burritos here, I wouldn't wait for more than 10 minutes or so, and definitely not in the sun. Some of the tacos are a deal at a little over a dollar, but the burritos can get pricey if you're not careful, and you may end up spending more than what it's really worth. But if you're in town for the day, definitely make a stop a Buch's and you'll forever have bragging rights that you've experienced a Grand Haven tradition.

A likeable kind of place, as long as you tolerate really boring food. I just got back from my first trip to Michigan (meeting the bfs family!) and he insisted we had to go to Butch's. I don't eat meat so I ordered a vegetarian burrito. It was terrible. It literally tasted like nothing. I requested a ride over to Taco Bell afterwards. After talking to a few of the locals and sharing my unimpressed reviews of the place, a lot of people admitted that they really only liked it there because of the experience of growing up and going after the beach time after time. Its cute...and everyone was super friendly, its just bland. Except for the Strawberry Margarita Slushy.

  • Meagan S.

Terrible! My husband was excited to try this place while we vacationed in Grand Haven, MI because of all the positive reviews on Yelp. Butch's Beach Burritos is definitely overrated! There is nothing authentic about this place and the food doesn't even taste good. If you want the worst interpretation of tacos and burritos you will like this place...it's just not my thing. The chicken and beef tacos were bland even with salsa and the best part of lunch were the chips. Although Butch's is conveniently located near the beach, there are many other restaurants close enough with much better food. Go the extra half mile!

    (1)
  • Heather K.

Conveniently located near the state park, Butch's has consistently good food, including bean and beef burritos, taco salads, Chiwawa Chili Dogs, and freshly made salsas. Vegetarian items are also available. For a complete menu, please visit butchsbeachburritos.com .

My favorite burrito! Get the Supreme. Not heavy like the standard Mexican restaurants. Very fresh and tasty! Two locations, on the Harbor and in downtown Spring Lake (during winter). Their salsa is great too, I buy a bottle whenever I stop in.

    (5)
  • Heather L.

This isn't gormet food here. This is a place you go when you've been at the beach all day, you're sweaty and full of sticky sunblock and sand, the kids are wining they are hungry but it's too hot to eat anything too heavy and you really shouldn't be seen in polite society anyway, because of the sweat, sticky and sand. Yes, if you meet all that criteria - this is the place for you. In fact, this place is spot on. Outdoor seating. Two soft shell tacos for $1.49 each and an outstanding virgin strawberry margarita smoothie. Delish! But beware! no bathrooms.

    (5)
  • Kathy G.

This is just really bland Mexican food. Even their chips and salsa is below par. I normally scarf chips and salsa down, but theirs was so bad I threw it away. I also got a 'Strawberry Margarita shake' which was flavorless. Almost everything is under $2.00, so it's pretty reasonable. I would not consider this authentic Mexican food under any circumstance, but if you're looking for a cheap bite to eat close to the beach, this is your best bet.

  • Walter M.

The rule about not ordering Mexican food in the North still holds. People around here must not know better or only have Taco Bell to compare it to, but what I ordered and ate was NOT a burrito. Ingredients were cool to cold, flavorless, and the salsa was cloying and had no bite, and this was the "medium" level of spiciness.

It is easier to stand out from the crowd when you have the talent and willpower to obtain something that normal people cannot. Being average does not stand out in this world the way being original does, and for good reason. Everyone can do average. Everyone can do simple. It's why four chord songs by a farmer on his out-of-tune guitar may never be heard past his fence, while Mozart or Beethoven will be timeless works of art heard around the world. But what really makes something special is the kind of effect it has on each of us, and that effect doesn't necessarily have to be anything fancy. To some, a simple song can pack as much of a punch as a full orchestra playing in perfect unison. That ability to turn the simple into something special is, actually, very hard to do, and even harder to find. It all of a sudden becomes something that isn't average anymore. Simple, clean, fresh, familiar, average, and special- all wrapped in a tortilla.

  • Jim F.

Has to be the best tortilla shell and salsa ever had in a 'ritto. Found out they have them specially made . Well worth the wait in line, Butch's veggie is a perfect summer time lunch. Always my first stop in this town. It's like we drive 150 miles cross state only for Butch's, then the beach comes 2nd. (LOL)

  • Tommy P.

Burritos were good, homemade refried beans were tasty blend of pinto and kidney beans. The thin tortilla was a nice change of pace. If your in the mood for a burrito while in town and someone tells you to get a wet-buritto from The Tip, don't. Come here instead.

I really, really love Butch's! I grew up in Grand Haven and this place has been around since I was little. This is not Mexican food, so those who are expecting authentic Mexican will be disappointed. This place is in a class by itself...I've never had anything like it. It is one of the few food things that I miss about West Michigan because there is absolutely no way that I can replicate it at home. There is just something about the tortillas and the sauce (you get a choice of 1, 2, or 3 on a hotness scale), the lettuce and the cheese, the guacamole. How do they do it? My favorite is the vegetarian burrito minus sour cream with number two sauce and a side of guacamole and chips. The food aside, everyone who works there is so friendly. They have a good little assembly line going, so you never have to wait too long for your food - and this also makes the line going out the door not as scary. It will go fast - don't worry. And the prices aren't bad either! When I was younger, my only complaint was that this place was only open in the summers. But now that they've opened a second location a stone's throw over in Spring Lake that is open year-round and tastes just as terrific, I've got nothing. AGAIN - and this is important - do not expect traditional Mexican fare. This is just weirdo townie beach food made just as much (if not more) for the locals than for the tourists visiting the State Park down the street. They serve hot dogs in tortillas for crying out loud. So open your mind and treat yourself to Butch's. Lord knows it's the first thing I do every time I go back up to Michigan!

Delicious beach burrito. Worth the price.

  • Jeremy R.

A local classic and favorite! Burrito's are amazing, and have a special sauce! Lots of different varieties of mexican originals (nachos, burritos, tacos, etc) Not open all year, so make sure you go visit during those beautiful summer days!

  • Agnes M.

A friend recommend this place to me, and I'm so glad they did! I managed to stop by here after a long day at the beach this past August and ordered a chicken burrito with mild sauce -- well, I have to admit that it probably was the perfect finish to the day. Everything was fresh and the hot sauce was out of this world! I might just have to order up a jar for myself.

    (5)
  • Cristin L.

Very overrated IMHO. Taco Bell has better and more authentic food. The chips were very stale, and in prepackaged bags. I wish I had tried the guacamole, it might have redeemed it. We went here for dinner and were left hungry and dissapointed. this may be a better snack place. It is in a great location, but I don't get the hype!

Good veggie burrito! Nice place to stop to after hanging out at the beach (or on the way to the beach). Pretty reasonable.

  • K M.

This is just classic GH beach food. The burritos, tacos and taco salads are decent, maybe not totally authentic Mexican but still taste great. Portions are big for the prices and the setting can't be beat. Another great thing about Butch's is real homemade sun tea - because I really detest "fountain iced tea". It's not hard to make a jar of tea out in the sun, or even brew it in the kitchen for that matter, but so few places do it anymore. The day we lunched here they also had fresh guacamole - and it was good! "Made it myself," the guy behind the counter said. Good avocados are not easy to come by in West MI, unless you are like my friend who has her mother-in-law UPS them from her backyard tree in Southern Cal. Their homemade salsas are also great. I think this beach location closes in the winter (website lists opening day and also mentions Spring Lake location open all year - I was previously unaware of the SL Butch's.)

  • Rob S.

I'm sorry, I do not understand the long lines outside of this place. It's kinda cheap, so that may explain it a bit, but it is not worth waiting in line for. On a nice weekend evening the line is 20+ out the door, so after waiting forever you get a tortilla filled mostly with lettuce and a few other things that seemed to come from a GFS boil-in-a-bag. Walk a couple of blocks to downtown and get some real food.

    (2)
  • Brian P.

Don't expect authentic Mexican, but plan on a unique taste you won't get anywhere else. Their burritos are wrapped and eaten by hand. The shredded chicken and homemade salsa make the perfect burrito I love to get every time we're in town.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
