Love this place. Best Mexican food ever. Homemade chips and smooth salsa. The rice and wet beef burritos are really good. Nachos are a big serving of there own to share. I come back here every time I visit family since I can't find any other place like it. Family owned and operated which makes the food some days spicier than others but at least you know your not getting it from a can or bottle like the chain restaurants.

No, I've never been to Mexico or Texas as the other reviewers have so I can't compare, but Tia Helita's serves great food regardless of how "authentic" it is. The stewed beef in the burritos is tender and tasty and the chips & salsa are fabulous. I also had the best fish tacos ever just last night. The ambiance is a bit dated and cheap, but if you are going for the food, who cares? I've never had a waitress who was less than attentive and friendly. This is where I bring family when they come in to town to visit and it's the place they always request to go back to.

Been coming to this place for ever since I was born pretty much. The food is amazing! Love the homemade chips and salsa and the burritos are out of this world! Will recommend this to everyone that loves Mexican food!

After a rather disastrous outing at another mexican place 20 minutes south- my wife and I were ready for something good. I have to say we were impressed. The service was excellent, the food ( we had tamales and enchiladas) was great. No complaints unlike some of the other reviews. I will agree that the appetizer menu was missing a few things like ceviche like most Mexican restaurants in Mexico. Worth the trip? You won't be disappointed!

Mexican food is my favorite. I've never disliked a Mexican restaurant till I came here. I really tryed to like this place, just didnt happen. I walked in and was seated promptly. The place wasnt very busy. Service sucked. It took awhile before someone came over. A guy took my drink order and then the waitress came over and didnt know someone else took the drink order. I got my drinks. Waitress brought over the worst chips and salsa I ever had. I bit into the chips they were like thin layer of cement. Hard as a rock. I asked the waitress if she could bring me chips that werent so hard and stale. She brought me the same kind of chips. I guess she didnt listen. I ordered steak tacos, it was like a shredded beef? When did steak turn into a nasty shredded beef. This place was gross nasty and disgusting. I could find better food in a garbage dumpster then this place. Taco Bell is gourmet food compared to this nasty s--- hole.

First, let me say I may be a little biased when it comes to Mexican food. I grew up next door to a lil old Mexican couple and they were like my grandparents & you know no one's cooking ever compares to grandma's. However, Tia Helita's is like the Olive Garden of Mexican restaurants. No, I take that back Olive Garden actually has a few good dishes. When I moved back to MI from GA, my Mom took me to Tia Helita's because I was missing my regular Mex place in Atlanta. She really like Tia Helita's and thought I would too. I'd always heard how great the food was & am always looking for good Mexican food, so I figured what the heck. I was sorely disappointed. Maybe at one time it was good, but I found it disgusting and bland. Like frozen dinner bad. The signs were there though. 1. Bad service from the start. Slow, rude, just generally not good. Before you ask, no It wasn't a busy night either. 2. They use orange cheese. I've never had a good experience with a Mexican place that used anything other than white cheese. For me, it's the first sign that the food has been too "Americanized". 3. The chips & salsa. I love chips and salsa, they're my crack. So, I wouldn't mind paying for the chips & salsa if they were any good. The chips are thicker than 'normal" chips, which I don't really mind, my problem is with the salsa. Yuck! 4. Far too many frozen foods on the menu, mostly appetizer's, but still they don't belong there. You want to offer mini tacos/burritos, etc make them. I don't even care if you freeze them for later use, Grandma did and they were still delicious. If you like Tia Helita's great, but if you want good Mexican food I agree with Jason B. There are much better Mexican restaurants in the area to go to, so don't waste your time. One of my faves is El Potrero, now on Hill Rd next to the Secretary of State, or any of the others he listed are good too. Sorry this was so long winded, but I hoped it's useful.

I'm from Texas. Love Meixican Food. Love Tex-Mex even better. Not sure what the blue hell they're serving in Michigan. I've been there twice and probably won't go back. My standards may be a bit high on Mexican food, but only because it is my favorite. The service here has sucked both times. The last time people were not getting their food at several tables and were PISSED! But overall, i just didn't like the salsa, or the food. Very bland and typical of what you might find in a Swanson Dinner. Notw, if you've had problems with your digestion or constipation, you need to eat here. Order the sampler and it will clean you out before you go to sleep that night. For some, before you leave to go home. Oh, what do I like..La Mexicana 4 in Waterford is the best Mexican I have had here.

I was told this was a great place to eat by a few friends. I am no longer friends with those people. Bland skim layered food, boring drinks, uninspired menu. Do yourself a favor go to El Potrero's, Guadelajara Grill, El Charitos, La Azteca, El Cozumel Mexican Grill, or Taco Bell any of these places are better. And watch out, the charge for things that are normally free at other restaurants.

I think the people that love this place have never been to a real mexican restaurant. Or they remember it from a long time ago when Tia Helita was actually the one cooking. The people who like this place probably also like Don Pablo's. We were asked if we wanted chips and salsa and said yes. We were then charged for it. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant where I've been charged for chips and salsa. The food looked like it had been sitting in a pot to develop a nasty skin for hours. And it just tasted bad. I've heard around town that there were several nieces who worked with Tia Helita when she was still alive. When she died there was a falling out. Now the niece who cooks the worst is in charge. The other nieces work at El Charitos. This of course could be just rumors. The only fact is that Tia Helitas is Mexican food for dummies.

I have always heard that this place is fantastic....then I went there. It's not. The food was boring, the server was nice, but didn't know much about the menu, the menu itself wasn't that impressive and the drinks where OK. I will never go there again. And for all those that "love"this place--may I please ask why?

I recently dined here...the food was great! I had the enchiladas and the chips/salsa beats everyone's ...highly recommend for the best Mexican food. NOT greasy like some other local Mexican spots

The food is decent, but there are a couple better Mexican restaurants in the area now. The place is kid friendly and has good liquor specials all the time. They do a good job with take-out.

Ok Mexican food -- not very authentic as it turns out-- dark ambience. I prefer Puerto Vallarta down the road in Grand Blanc.

We love this place! My family has been going here for years. My boyfriend and I can't get enough of their chips and salsa, and their homemade cherry coke is the best!

Over priced, no free chips n salsa, $9.50 for a big Margarita with one shot in it . Soupy burrito lacked flavor. Do yourself a favor and don't go here! !

Our entire family has eaten at this wonderful "family's" restaurant for over 40 years and it's just as great now as it was originally. It's real, it's cooked with dedication and love, and they are an awesome family. My dad would go directly back in to the kitchen way back when Mary was still cooking, and miss his entire dinner because he was so busy talking! I hope this family carries on its wonderful cooking traditions for years to come! Anyone who hasn't eaten here is missing out, and anyone who finds fault. ..has no taste. This is most definitely not fast food.....

Gross. Way too salty. Go to any other Mexican restaurant for better food. Seriously. I ordered the enchiladas and my husband ordered the wet burritos. Both were disgusting. Very salty and over seasoned. The chips were mostly broken and, again, very salty. The margarita was not good either.

My favorite food is Mexican, authentic Mexican. I have eaten food cooked by a local woman on the beach in cozumel. Tia Helita is the best Mexican food I've had inside this country. I regularly drive 50 miles to eat there.

Probably the worst meal I've ever had here. Usually like it, but wet beef burrito dinner was extremely salty. Thought it was me but my wife agreed her's was lousy also. Re-heated the leftovers and still lousy. Threw it away. Probably give it another shot...but not too soon.

You either like this place or you hate it. I love the chicken enchiladas and their chips and salsa are the absolute best (but not free). My husband doesn't like their food (but he does love the chips and salsa). He says it's bland, but I pile the salsa on top of my enchiladas, so I guess I wouldn't know. :)

I have been here a few times, and have never been particularly impressed with the quality of the food, nor the service. The burrito I most recently had was sub par, and just tasted bland and overwhelmed by the old tomato paste they pour on everything. The wait staff took forever to bring out the food, and it was cold. There are much better Mexican restaurants near by. I have friends who always talk this place up, but I'm not sure why.

Ate here for the first time last week. Was hesitant at first because I usually do not like "authentic" Mexican restaurants; too many onions and peppers! But this place is amazing. Up until recently my favorite restaurant was Don Pablos- I love the Tex Mex style, but they've gotten worse and worse over time. After eating here- this is my new favorite Mexican place. I got a ground beef quisdilla, and it was AMAZING. It was packed with beef, and the top was COVERED in cheese. Came with a side of rice, sour cream and guac. The homemade chips and salsa are the BEST I've ever had. The chips are super thick, and the salsa is just the right consistency. I would have gave this place 5 stars BUT, you have to pay for the chips and salsa.. what kind of Mexican restaurant do you have to PAY for the chips and salsa? Lunch is between 11:00-3:30 if I remember right- great lunch prices. Just wish the chips and salsa were "complimentary"

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
