Nice spot. Good chinese food. They also carry korean/chinese dishes like ja jang myun (noodle in black bean sauce) and tang soo yook (fried beef/pork with a sweet & sour clear sauce) both top notch dishes.

Though I only ordered take-out, I did like Empress of China. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, they actually have descriptions of the dishes on their menu, which I found to be very helpful in choosing something new to try! The rest of my family didn't care for them, but I thought they were pretty great, despite the price.

The best Chinese restaurant in Flint, Michigan. Very fresh delicious entrees. Great lunch specials. This compares to some of the best Chinese places in Toronto's Chinatown. Highly recommended.

Hands down the best restaurant in Flint! I grew up going to Empress of China with family and friends. To this day, the ONLY thing I miss about that area of Michigan is this restaurant. Whenever I'm in the area, whether I'm hungry or not, I always pick up some Empress to bring home for dinner. I haven't met anybody who doesn't enjoy the food. Their wonton soup is heavenly, and they also have a ton of options for vegetarians. SOOOO delish! I can't say enough about it! I will forever be an Empress of China girl.

I don't normally like to eat this kind of Chinese food, but I grew up going here with my family, and just like Alexa mentioned -- it is located in a hilarious part of the city. Walk right next door for an eyeful of boob if that's what you want for dessert. They give you a lot of food and are really nice people. I used to bring a Big Mac meal with me when I was little because I refused to eat the food, but then I warmed up to it. It's better quality take out food, if you know what I mean. Chinese take out can be really gross, or it can be not gross. This is one of the "not gross" places. I actually, admittedly like eating here. I like the shrimp fried rice.

Nestled among the peep show shacks and strip clubs ( don't let this deter you!!) this is the place to go for Chinese food in flint! They offer a Sunday buffet which is to die for! My suggestions.... Orange chicken...crab rangoons...and sizzling rice soup. The staff are always wonderful and courteous. Check out empress you wont be disappointed.

Agree with everyone on the location, it's interesting to say the least! None the less, the food is excellent and you won't be disappointed.

Excellent food. Portions are generous and the quality is very high. This restaurant is one of my favorite Chinese places in Flint.

Not sure what just happened, but I came here for dinner with two friends and we ordered 3 different dishes. One was a chicken dish, another was a shrimp dish, and the last was just a vegetarian dish. All 3 dishes came out one by one and each one was cooked the same, tasted the same, included all the same things in the dish, the same sauce, but different proteins. At first, the shrimp dish came out and we thought it tasted pretty decent. It was mixed with some pea pods, water chestnut, bamboo shoots. Next came the vegetarian dish. What did this dish have? Again, pea pods, water chestnut, bamboo shoots, but added broccoli and tofu. Lastly, the chicken dish. And again, with pea pods, water chestnut, bamboo shoots. The chicken was overly salty. The dish was all the same color since the sauce was all the same. We ordered from the red menu, and it's suppose to lean more towards real Chinese food, but it definitely was not. Maybe if we ordered the food from the Americanized menu, it wouldn't have been that bad. The service was good though. I have only been here one other time almost a year ago and ordered a Korean dish. It was the black bean noodles and thought it was excellent.

This restaurant used to be our go-to for Chinese about 10 years ago. I've been back a couple of times is the past 5 years and it has just gone downhill to me. The food is just not good anymore. Sad. It used to be a 5 star place.

I love the food but the owner and some of the wait staff lack common friendliness. They are ahort and rude to guests, the atmosphere is good and the food is the best around. It would just be nice to be treated in a friendly mannor

Pulling up into the parking lot I noticed a good deal of cars, which is always a pleasant sign that they're doing something right. But boy, how wrong I was..... Upon opening the doors the atmosphere Was very gaudy and over-the-top for me. I had a sense that they were trying to hard to impress. The service was nothing particularly special, she only filled my water glass up once and asked about our experience a single time. And the worst part of it was the food!!! I had sweet and sour chicken, and it came out as cold or lukewarm at best! The chicken was overdone and dry. The thought they could douse it with gobs of sauce to cover he texture, but nothing short of a miracle could do that. And the price was ridiculous !! 10.95 for a small portion of sweet and sour chicken and some tea?!?!? No thanks.

For the first time since I can remember, I could not eat even 1/3 of all my food from a Chinese takeout of sweet and sour chicken, white rice, and egg drop soup. I'll give it two stars because the ordering on the phone, picking it up, and time was great. The food however, not so good. The chicken had a weird texture I couldn't stand, it was also medium warm. Also, The egg drop soup had mushrooms, never heard of that! And not just a little I could scoop out. After a few bites it was near impossible to get a spoonful without a piece of mushroom in the mix. I wanted fried rice, but the wouldn't let me upgrade and said it would be a new order. I bared the white rice, it was okay. As a whole the best part was the fortune cookie, and not worth $15. I wish it was as good as I had hoped for.

I don't get all the hype about this place. My co-workers rave about this place but I've never been impressed. Service has always been good but anything other than crab rangoon and the cokes have been trumped by many other Chinese restaurants I've frequented. Food is bland and anything I've ordered as "spicy" is always a disappointment. Soup is disgusting. An earlier reviewer mentioned ordering from the Korean menu, so maybe ill try that the next time I get conned into going here.

I've been away from Flint for 10 years but my family frequented this place growing up. I returned last weekend and it was just like I remember it. Maybe even better. 5 stars for the soup, crab rangoon and Mongolian Chicken. Great service. Block out the Vu and Nathan Jay's...and all of Dort Highway for that matter...and enjoy a nice meal in the oasis.

Excellent food, friendly staff. As much as I do not enjoy living near Flint, I have to say that there are some hidden gems in the area. Empress is definitely one of them. I absolutely love their szechuan chicken dinner with white rice. It's hard to stop eating it once you start. Gotta have some leftovers for the next day though! They have my favorite egg rolls and sauce. Yum! If we ever move out of the general area, this will be one if those places I would miss a lot. When I get a craving for their food, it will not go away until I go there. I love this place. If you love Chinese food, you can't go wrong here. Best overall Chinese food in the area for sure. Too bad it's located in such a shady area, but hey, that's Flint for ya.

Based on the reviews, I expected some pretty good chinese food when I met a friend here for lunch. I was very disappointed. The hot and sour soup had chicken in it, even though it doesn't say that it does on the menu and the waitress told me that it was meatless. The crab rangoons were actually pretty good, but I thought needed more filling to be dubbed "great." My friend ordered an egg roll and said that it was good, and wound up just eating that after her entree proved to be subpar. The beef and broccoli that my husband and my friend ordered was very, very bland and even dousing it in soy sauce didn't help much. I ordered a spicy scallop dish which was swimming in sauce that wasn't at all spicy. I was also disappointed with the very limited number of items on the menu that were meatless, but if you eat seafood there are a decent number of shrimp and scallop dishes.

My husband and I were looking for a Chinese restaurant that was not a buffet and had a full bar. After going on line and reading other reviews for this restaurant we decided to try it. It was great! The food was wonderful and the service was exceptional! We will definitely go back.

This shining star on Dort highway is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Flint. The food quality and service is outstanding. Lunch prices are very affordable. The place is surprisingly nice inside. They have a huge back room for large groups. They do take reservations, but you don't normally need one, especially for lunch. Don't let the bad location keep you away!

I grew up in Flint, went to college in Detroit, and now live in Chicago. There are a few things I find myself homesick for, and one of them is having a family dinner at Empress of China. Never have I had such wonderful sizzling rice soup, and the Mongolian beef is incredible. This reminicing of yummy Chinese is making me want to come home to visit really soon!

Best chinese food in the area! The restaurant is calm and relaxing and the servers are all incredibly nice and helpful. Its a shame that the area around it has been steadily going downhill, but a trip to this restaurant is well worth the risk.

On my way back home from the outlet stores, I will stop by to have dinner before heading to Ann Arbor... While I cannot comment on the Americanized Chinese Dish, next time you are there, ask for the Korean Menu and order from there... you won't be sorry... the food on this menu is very different then on the regular menu. What should you order? Couple of recommendations for first timers ordering from the Korean menu... Spicy & Tangy Chicken/Shrimp, Sweet and Sour Beef or Pork - try these first and expand your dishes from there. I come here and believe me, I don't make it here often, but when I do, I order their Jjajangmyun (Black Bean Noodle), the best in MI! Along with this, I'll order Spicy & Tangy Chicken, sweet and sour beef... they also have good Cchampong (Spicy Seafood Soup).

On the way home to midland, we stopped at Empress of china for dinner. I ordered the crab rangoons, shrimp toast, and sesame chicken. I then HAD to order fried rice as well. I was so surprised that I was not offered the option of fried rice with my entrée, at most Asian resturants, I am given the choice. NOT here, I had to order a dinner portion of fried rice to have with my dinner. My shrimp toast was not what I expected, It was chewy rubbery without any real shrimp. Don't order this. My sesame chicken was actually red sweet and sour chicken with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Don't order this. My only dish I enjoyed was the dinner portion of fried rice. Not eating here ever again. Glad to be back in midland where I can go to China palace or Pi's Chinese.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
