My favorite spot in too cool for school Ferndale. Corned beef hash with poached eggs always helps me after a hard day's night. Saganaki. Duh. Waitress had great hair like Princess Jasmine would have if she so inclined to undo her trademark braid. S. schooled me with local lore about the Hani, the given name of her chicken tender Greek wrap. Apparently the Hani originated at National Coney and due its popularity spread across Detroit. But because of trademark infringement, copycats are unable to call a Hani a Hani elsewhere. But ultimately, what's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet. Sweet Hani.

If I could give this place six stars I would!! We went for breakfast. Excellent wait staff. A great mix of customers. Very clean. I had the corned beef hash and it was spot on. Homemade and so good that my husband kept stealing bites. We also ordered a side of biscuits and gravy. The gravy was homemade and had a ton of flavor. My husband had the gyro omlette. It looked good, but he ate it so fast I didn't get a taste. I also think this place was an excellent value. For around $20, we ate enough extremely tasty food to allow us to skip lunch and we took home enough leftovers to take care of tomorrow's breakfast. I can't wait to go back for dinner.

We stopped in for lunch after leaving Beaumont. I was just looking for a little diner that would give us breakfast or lunch. We walked through the door and waited by the sign that said, "Please wait to be seated." After a few minutes and my apparent frustration of watching the staff laugh and joke around while we stood there, a waitress looked up and yelped something at us. I didn't move because I wasn't really sure if she was talking to us or someone else. It was really loud and there were 3 or 4 tv's running. My Mom suggested we find a seat anyway. I almost left because I felt like I was treated pretty rudely and I hadn't even sat down yet but my Mom was starving. We sat down and a very bubbly hostess popped over and asked if we wanted a drink. We both ordered and she came back and told us our waitress would be over shortly. This isn't a big place so I'm not sure why they needed a hostess that yelled over the counter to seat you but, whatever. Outside of the terrible hostess, the food was pretty good. Eggs were done perfect, pancakes were enormous and delicious. The sausage and bacon were great. I ordered a Gyro special and it was good. Not great, but pretty good. Our waitress was nice but not terribly attentive. I think she was watching and we didn't need anything but a table touch would have been nice. I'd go for the food but I really eat out for the service.

Took my chances on this diner as I waited for my car to be serviced. I was pleasantly surprised! Most everything served is comfort food style options. I ordered the Turkey Reuben and it was fantastic for the price. The portions are very large here. My sandwich was stacked with fresh turkey, sauerkraut, and melted cheese. The fries were your run of the mill french fries, but they were wedge sized and filling. Definitely worth a try if you are hungry and dining on a budget!

I have been a fan of this diner for their large portions, hot food and friendly staff. It's not the culinary work so say, Toast a few miles north, but it's comfort food done well. Today was different. I was handed a tired menu, torn partially in two. This was a foreshadowing of the meal to come. My son ordered a bowl of chili, which seemed to be the kind you top a Coney Island hot dog with. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs special, and sadly, it just wasn't. I didn't expect greatness, but the flavor was just this side of ketchup. The nail in the coffin today was the service. Twice I had to ask the busser to find out waitress to get our check. Next time, I'll stick to breakfast, which is something Sam's does consistently well. The flabby torn menu is indicative of a good diner that could use some sprucing up in more ways than one.

This place always knocks it out of the park for me. My dad has been coming here for years and it's the first choice if you want a good home cooked style meal for the same price as a bag of greasy fast food. There are always specials going on and even the full dinner selections are mostly under $10. I haven't gotten around to trying any of their tempting desserts because anything I eat before that fills me to the point of no return.

I usually never give any establishment 5 stars because I feel everyone has room to improve, but there are exceptions and Sam's gets one. There are a lot of Diners in the Metro Detroit area and Ferndale has its share too. You will not find a cleaner, affordable, quality diner in the city of Detroit. This ranks above the best. The menu is not fancy, but ample. I will say I have only eaten breakfast here, since that is all I ever would go to a diner for, but if your looking for exceptional service, good food and a GREAT price. Then this is the place for you and it can't be missed. Oh and did I say how clean it was too? Enjoy this little gem, because I always do!

I hit this place on the reg. Great breakfast and its cheap. Food is better than your average coney food. Lots of dinner choices and the staff is nice. Kristi and Lola are some of the best servers I ever met.

I've driven by Sam's hundreds of times since moving to Ferndale a few years ago, but never stopped in. This changed last week, when I wanted brunch but didn't feel like dealing with the "brunch crowd" of some of the downtown Ferndale restaurants. My friend and I met at Sam's, located on Woodward between 8 and 9 Mile. I was impressed with how clean and bustling the place is - we met there at 12:30 and were lucky to get a table! The menu is large and impressive, and both of our food came out perfect (I had a basic breakfast; kind of hard to screw up, but I appreciate a well cooked breakfast all the same). The portions were plentiful, and the price was reasonable. The waitress came back with lots of coffee refills, too - always a bonus in my book. I'll definitely be back!

The Ferndale area seems to be lacking a really awesome Coney Island style restaurant. I was excited to see that Sam's had that greek/american/breakfast any time style menu. I've been there twice now. The first time I got eggs and toast ... can't complain there. Tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. It's rather hard to mess up eggs and toast. Next time I tried an omelette and didn't love it. I got chicken breast, spinach, cheese, and onions. I order this exact omelette at other breakfast places I go and the reason I didn't like it as much was the spinach was frozen rather than fresh. Makes all the difference to me. I won't order that again from here. Very friendly service and a good menu yet Sam's is slacking by leaving up their icicle lights and snowflake decor (it is June). I also noticed a worker stirring a huge bucket of ranch dressing without any gloves on, and she had long fake painted nails. When I worked in the food industry we weren't even allowed to have clear nail polish on, as it can chip off into food or drinks... it made me want to dry heave to see the big ranch bucket. I'm not anxious to get back to Sam's ... but I'm sure I will at some point. It was pretty tasty and the location is awesome for Ferndale residents looking for a good coney thats open past 3pm.

I have occasionally gone to Sam's because it is convenient and the food was decent, perhaps I would have rated it as three stars; that is until today. I popped in for a simple breakfast, eggs over easy, hash browns, and toast. Before I completed the walk home, I began to feel pain and bloating in my abdomen that is unmistakably food poisoning. I don't intend on eating there again; which is too bad because it was ideal for lazy mornings.

This is the cheer's of coney's where every one knows your name. Just sit at the counter and you will strike up a conversation with some cool people or grab a seat on the patio in the summer and watch the Ferndale cops bust speeders ( kinda fun to watch). Food is great, portions are huge and staff is always friendly. Close enough to the city with out having to worry about your car being there when you walk out side.

It's been a little while since I visited Sams, that's mainly because I no longer live just across the street from there. So when I visited the restaurant today I was happy to find it unchanged and as great as it ever was. The fact with Sams is that it is far quicker to list its bad points, of which there is really only one. Anyone who has ever been to Sams knows it tends to be busy and the problem is that its parking lot is small. So there ya go, Sams has bad parking but that is still better than most Ferndale eateries along Woodward, which have almost none. I should however mention why I give it five stars. Great friendly polite service, excellent value for money, large portions and they are fast with your food. My wife and I have been to Sams on many occasions and also had takeout from them, as of yet we have never had a bad experience. It may not be flashy or trendy like the Flytrap, but its a good solid restaurant and our number one choice, if we can find parking. We got very lucky today, we went early and avoided the after church Sunday crowd, who often keep the place packed all day long.

It's a coney/diner, so don't , expect 5 stars. Busy place today at lunch (weekday). Grabbed a seat at the counter, which gives a good view of the operations. Efficient crew running this place. Waitress called me "hon" - kind of old school. Much of my review is based on what I saw from other customers orders. Portions are huge. The Greek Salad is on my list for next time. Lots of breakfast foods ordered at lunch. Grits were pretty popular. I had a Philly Wrap from the day's specials. Tasty, but too greasy. The Chicken Gumbo was really good - chunks of chicken, okra. They do a steady carryout business and turn around walk-in orders quickly. Great value. Very clean. Looks like some outdoor seating for whenever the weather finally cooperates. To quote Arnold - "I'll be back".

I used to go to Sam's every weekend for a while when I was dating someone who lived nearby it. The relationship didn't last, but the good impression did. The service was always fast and friendly and the pancakes...mouthwatering. I'm sure they were made mostly of butter (I never said it was the healthiest meal you'd ever have) but they were so delicious I just couldn't resist. It gets super crowded on Sunday mornings with the after-church crowd, but it's well worth the wait.

Fried food still frozen in the middle, sour chocolate milk, and browning lettuce in my salad. The waitstaff is pleasant, and my friend finished his steak and eggs, rendering the two star rating.

I think this is the kinda place where you have to order the right thing. I have only eaten some basic breakfast combos and the chicken strip pita here and both have been good every time. My husband is a little more adventurous and sometimes it doesn't work out. He ordered a milkshake once and I think it was the first (and maybe last) shake made that year. Freezer burnt chunks of ice cream and all. But from my personal experience the food is just fine. Bonus points for offering turkey sausage patties, and for making their own ranch.

Very displeased with this place. I made a carry out order for a chicken pita sand which and wanted a french toast breakfast with eggs and bacon. When I called I asked if they had and option like that and was told no I have to order the big breakfast (7.99) and a half order of french toast (4.75) and that would be the only way to get what I wanted. So I placed the order and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. I show up 15 minutes after the call and the order was not ready or even started. So I as waited I noticed a meal choice of exactly want I asked for for 6.99. When I asked why I wasn't offered this deal or why it wasn't on the online menu they said "what is everyone who answers the full suppose to remember every inch of the menu?" And then the girl saying "well it wasn't me who you talked to so I don't know what you want me to do about it". I asked to speak to the manager which I was told there was not one of staff and that "he probably won't do anything about it anyways" I asked for the difference on my bill and they told me they could not because I got extra food (that I didn't even want!!!!). Completely rude. Overcharged me. Made me wait and had no one on staff to address the problem. Being told he probably wouldn't do anything about it is just completely ridiculous and frustrating. The food I waited for was gross. Half cold and the french toast was soggy and not cooked all the way through. I'm disgusted with this place and hope that everyone would take our advice in not giving these rude people any of your money for their terrible food.

Sam's is by far the best coney/greek grill/ diner in the Ferndale area. Fast, good but not exceptional food, and lots of it for very little money, much less than $10 a person. If we're ever not sure where to go for a meal, and we're crunched for time, Sam's is at the top of the list. It's consistently good. You won't be amazed, but you will want to come back.

hidden Gem. Love this lil place. The fajita chicken wrap is amazing! AND so is the chicken kabob. My friend got the walleye, and said WOW, not greasy at all and full of flavor. Cant beat the price. Even meet a hollywood celeb here once. Just love this place!

So we've returned to Sam's several times since the original review, and I had to upgrade to 5-star. This restaurant is really quality - consistently. It's like a stepped-up version of coney and family restaurant food, and the price is great. Today I had the hot turkey sandwich for the second time and it's delicious. The turkey is quality lunchmeat - no, it's not chunky right off the bird, but it's real meat that you can see and taste the texture of, and there's TONS of it. The gravy is flavorful and the mashed potatoes are REAL. Like, REAL potatoes with texture and flavor. We both had soups to start and they're totally homemade. I had navy bean and John had split pea. Both were tasty; mine was a tad salty for John's taste, but I thought it just fine. Other hits on the menu are the biscuits and gravy, salads are ENORMOUS, the "health club chicken plate" is really good as well. The chicken plate is chopped, marinated chicken that's been sauteed with brocolli, over rice with a tasty lemon sauce over top. Alex's chicken pita was good, John had that recently. This place has become a new regular haunt for us. I highly recommend it.

There are always reviews on here where most people love the place but a few just don't get it. This is mine. I went here last Saturday morning (early) and it was about half full of people. We walk in and take the only booth which is right near the door. That's fine but really, fix the seat. I don't, and I'm sure others don't like sliding across a 8" diameter peeling duct tape patch. It was also obvious the booth was waiting for busboy service, i.e. water rings on table, etc....when the waitress arrives, she is very friendly but does not clean the table off. Ok, I get extra napkins and do it myself. I know I'm being picky here but I don't like eating in other peoples detritus. So my friend and I order breakfast. I got the special which is my barometer to measure against at places like this. Two eggs, toast, sausage and hash browns and coffee. Coffee is very good (to me) but real coffee drinkers say mine is too weak so keep that in mind. It compared favorably to me with OPH's. Eggs were fluffy and hot, sausage was five star -- really, really good and the hash browns (which were American fries btw) were...just ok. When I order hash browns, I like the shredded potatoes fried crisply, not just blobs of potato only fried on the outside but they were hot, so whatever. As a former Eastsider, if you've been to SeaBreeze on Gratiot or Rosanne's Kitchen on 15 mile -- that is this place. Bullet points: * The place is clean and noisy, due to, I'm sure, the stone tile floors. I can only imagine the din on a Sunday after church * Service is fast and friendly (but maybe not that observant) * Food is above average. Not the best breakfast I've ever eaten (cue up Judge Rinehold here) but it will do. Sausage is top notch though. *Price was very reasonable -- $13 for two Honestly, I would probably rate this 2.5 and probably would go somewhere else again, such as Hilton Rd. Cafe. **Edited to add: I don't normally sit at tables that need to be bussed, but in this case, it was either sit down or stand awkwardly in front of the entrance door. There really isn't a spot to wait for a table to be cleaned.

the bf and i are always searching out diners for cheap dinners and nice service. we drive past this place all the time and never really thought about going in. the odd area the restaurant in in probably doesn't do it service. we hit the jackpot with sam's ferndale grill. the waitresses are young and very, very nice. the food is hot and fresh. you can tell that they pay attention to little details too. instead of a crappy side of green beans (like every diner), mine came stewed in tomatoes and onions. so much more flavor and not just some throwaway part of the meal. i also tend to think that you can bet on a restaurant depending on the side salads they serve. if you get iceberg with a slice of tomato, the meal is probably gonna be subpar. but is you get fresh lettuce with tomatoes, onions, croutons, beans and other tasty things, then you can bet on a good meal. sam's salad is good and their dressing weren't bad either. our meals each were hot and delicious. i love a good hot roast beef sandwich and was not disappointed. we will be back. love, juston

Yup. This place is definitely a gem! Small but nicely decorated and arranged breakfast and lunch spot. Traditional American breakfast was very tasty! No greasiness (link sausage), runniness (large eggs), or dryness (fluffy pancakes). Coffee was fresh but unremarkable (but isn't that what speciality coffee shops are for?) Pleasant, efficient wait staff. Incredibly affordable. Just north of 8 Mile on the main artery of Woodward. No doubt, I'll be back when in town for the summer cookout!

I was looking for a place to go to breakfast with my brother in town, as my Hamtramck favorite, Maine Street, is closed on Sundays. I searched on Yelp and found Sam's, only 5 minutes from Hamtown, just over 8 Mile on Woodward. Odd, since I have driven this strip countless times, and never noticed this place. It was Sunday, at 11, so I was worried about a crowd. The place was full -- hopping, in fact -- but we got a table in minutes. It was a great experience. The staff was fast, friendly and efficient. It took longer to decide and order than it did for the food to come. We were never rushed, the noise level was fine, we were always offered more coffee, and we were able to spend time in good conversation. I have to admit, I didn't try anything special: I had two eggs, bacon, hash browns and rye. But it was better than fine. The bacon was crisp, the rye delicious, and the hash browns plentiful. My brother opted for pancakes with his eggs, and they were big and thick. Plus, the total was under $14 for two. A nice little breakfast. I would definitely go back to try an omelet, or maybe a greek dinner. Way to go, Yelp!

Sam's is a hidden gem in Ferndale. It is basically on the Ferndale/Detroit border just north of 8 mile on the East side Woodward. Ordered breakfast. WOW! 3.95 for a HUGE portion breakfast! Unlike some "cheap" breakfast places, the eggs were not runny, the hashbrowns were crisp and done, and the meat was tasty. The toast was buttered, and warm. Waitstaff is very attentive, and the interior has a updated, clean look. (place burned down a few years ago and was remodeled) Also, a few flat screen TV's in the corners, and its really not crowded. Went in on a Sunday morning at 9am (typically the busiest time for breakfast) and our party of 5 adults and 3 kids sat down immediately. This place is great. I would definitely go again. They also take Credit Cards, which helps.

I've passed by Sam's every day on my way to and from Detroit. When Josephine's was closed today for a private party, my friend and I made our way here instead. It is a smallish Greek-style diner (Gyros, Breakfast, etc.), and it was full of people and bustling. My omelet was light and tasty. Service was good, too. I would definitely return for breakfast.

on a day when i didn't have patience for waiting in the line at toast and didn't want plain old 'coney island' selections i remembered a diner i ate at 5-6 years ago somewhere around 8 mile and woodward. so i went on a quest, a quest that had to be really short because i wanted to punch my teeth out, i was so hungry! i drove past sam's restaurant that didn't look like the place i went to before, and after not finding it i settled for sam's. it was the place i remembered, only moved a little ways to a new building {i think they had a fire?} man, i LOVE this place. it's right on the detroit/ferndale border. it was definitely busy - my friend and i opted to sit at the counter, tables opened up shortly after. the menu is HUGE and is very coney-like {greek, breakfast} but there are grits! and great ingredients so you can get a really good omelette. hashbrowns; crispy & not greasy. HANDMADE MILKSHAKES. fresh brewed iced tea. huge plates. a nice grill/sandwich selection in addition to breakfast. the service was fast, efficient and friendly. the food was fresh tasting and came really quick. the restaurant was packed but still felt really comfortable and clean. the prices are AWESOME. this is my new favorite breakfast spot.
