If you are vegan than you will love this place. I have take Non vegans here as well who were surprised that they liked it so much. The food is fresh and always a good selection. Atmosphere is casual artisty with paintings on the walls from local artists. Love om cafe! Yay!

Ummm, it's ok. I support anything vegan or vegetarian oriented but I just find this place to be very typical. I don't crave it and yes I do love alcohol with my vegan food, sorry! I make very similar things on my own, so I don't see the point in paying these prices for this kind of food. I adore the concept but I do feel for this decade it needs a bit of reworking now that more health conscious people are on board.

First time here. Had a vegan black bean jalapeño soup. It was pretty spicy but good. Also tried smothered tempeh with mashed potatoes and lightly steamed kale. That was absolutely delicious. The garlic and dill gave it a very nice flavor. Chocolate coconut cake sounded too tempting to resist. Loved it. The service was superb. Definitely will be back

Great for veggies and healthy. Cashew corn chowder and grill cheese were awesome. Small place. Enter from the back alley. Will go back for sure!

I love that eating here makes me feel good about my choice that I feel good after eating the food. Everything is fresh and tasty and I imagine you could bring someone who is leery about a vegetarian restaurant and they would leave very satisfied. My only complaint would be that I wish they offered their daily specials at lunchtime because the pictures always look so good on Facebook! I have only been here twice, so I have not had a lot of menu items, but I recently had their house salad (lettuce cucumber, onion, avocado, and choice of dressing) with their mustard shallot vinaigrette dressing and hot shaved Brussels sprouts and it was fantastic! They also have a lot of vegetarian and vegan desserts.

After what seems to be a decade of drooling over Om Café's Facebook newsfeed mainly consisting of irresistible profiles of special dishes and seductive head shots of tempeh stir frys, I finally got out and tried my first Nori Roll. "I fuck with these rolls"-Vivian, hater of vegetarian/no-fish-involved sushi. Also, the lentil soup is sensual. My friend says her mushroom burger was beguiling as well.

This is my favorite restaurant in Ferndale. Im a vegan and this place caters perfectly. I went here with my mother for the second time for Mothers Day Brunch. They didn't have the Frittata available because they needed to perfect the recipe- but I will DEFINITELY be getting it when it's available again. Vegan omelletes/Frittatas are the hardest to make. The service was awesome. We were helped by several waitresses who filled our cups whenever it looked empty. The waitresses were so kind too. There were some very small children who were making lots of noise but that didn't disturb things too much. We had Shaved Brussels and Breakfest Tacos, both of which were scrumptious!

I wasn't really into it and the menu seemed kinda boring or out dated compared to other vegan restaurants like cacao tree or Detroit vegan soul. Food was overall ok. The ingredients definitely tasted fresh and of high quality but still wasn't that into the food. The workers were very nice though.

What a wonderful dinning experience! It gives a new meaning to adage "food for the soul." I was dining alone, which makes for a different dining experience. Often when eating alone, one feels like an interloper in a social world. This was not so at this warm and hospitable setting. Also dining by myself, I intersected in a different way, was more cued in to what was going on in the restaurant. The servers were more than hospitable and in my observation tended to the customers as though it were a high end dining experience. They appeared to sharing the serving and took care of each others tables with great attention. I was very impressed, when shortly after closing time, the staff took great trouble to assist a late comer with an available take home dinner. The food is of course all Vegan. I am not a vegan, and was surprisingly pleased with how many things on the menu gave me the "drool factor". I restrained my self and ate a lovely Kale Salad with a side of cornbread. (Oh so yummy! I will go back for that alone.) Though more I was completely satisfied, I kept eyeing others entrees, thinking "Man I wish I had tried that." There is a happy energy to Om Cafe. It was refreshing to see such a diverse group of servers and clients. It seems to be doing what so few of Detroit's urban hipster restaurants are not, and that is creating an eating environment and food that is sustainable, food that nourishes mind, body and spirit. I will go back!

Everything was amazing, our waitress was great and very kind, the food was so tasty and the portions perfect! we weren't expecting out visit to be as it went, we can't wait to go back! The flavors were intense but in the best way. General tso's sauce had depth and its sweetness high quality in taste. Tofu had nice texture. I'd have added more veggies to the dish, though but I'm just thinking of it now, I really enjoyed my dinner. Rice sticky well done. My husband had a seitan burrito which he loved, oh and we also tried the sweet onion and mushroom soup which we found very flavourful, not runny, it reminded me of gulash without the grease and of course, this soup, well the entire meal was completely vegetarian/vegan. It's sad I only found out about it. Hubbie had carrot juice, and I got kukicha tea which I never had before and I really liked, even more with the free refill! You should really be heading to Om's café instead of reading this haha Nice art displayed on the cute green walls, cozy place, nice touch with the glasses, pretty tables... I swear they didn't pay me to write this lol, I really loved the place.
(5)Brando L.
The entrance is in the back, strange but intriguing. Once we entered we found that this helped keep it quiet and intimate since the noise of the traffic didn't accompany each new customer coming in. The staff had a touch of punk rocker vegan flair. No need to be intimidated. Our server was very sweet and welcoming. We admittedly just came in for dessert and tea. Vegan desserts are the best! Sugar doesn't overpower the palette and they feel less heavy in the stomach. The chocolate-raspberry birthday cake was delicious as was the ginger brew. We look forward to coming in again for a proper meal.
(5)Tim Y.
Yes. This place is awesome and the food is great. The servers are hipsters without the bad attitude that I'm used to from Austin. The warm potato arugula salad is amazing and creative. The teas were an awesome addition to the visit. It's a bit odd that you walk in from what seems to be behind the store, but whatever, the place is great. I didnt think I'd find a great vegan place in the Detroit area, but this really blew me away. I would recommend this place to anyone.
(5)Lisa T.
Literally BEST vegan food in metro Detroit. Incredibly fresh, and the flavors are savory and mouth watering. Super interesting entrees and appetizers, you would never guess it's vegan- no bland, boring or predictable meals here. I can't pick a favorite dish, I recommend trying everything at least once!

I've lived in Ferndale for nearly five years, and I have no idea why it's taken me so long to check out Om Cafe. I'm so glad I finally did, yet so disappointed it's taken me this long. My wife and I have had dinner on two occasions. I've gone with the weekly taco special and the vegetable stir fry, and my wife enjoyed the Mushroom Burger and Noodle Bowl. All were large, delicious, and "guilt free" veggie friendly portions. Needless to say, we'll be back again for more as the daily specials always seem so appetizing. Whether you're an herbivore or carnivore, OM has tasty organic plates that'll make even the most skeptical meat eater happy.

I was excited to try Om again. Unfortunately I had an unpleasant experience with the staff and the food. I ordered a salad toward the end of the night for carry out. I was immediately informed that they would be closing in 15 minutes. Fine I understand but the point kept being brought up as I was trying to place my order. I had asked for some modifications to the salad I ordered. I was informed that it would cost extra, no problem. When I got to the restaurant I waited 15 minutes for my carry out (I arrived before the closing time) plus was up charged from the original price she told me on the phone. Again Fine people make mistakes. What made me angry is being charged $16 for a salad and NOT having the things I asked for on it literally all I had on my $16 salad was 3 tomatoes, a few onions and extra peppers. I asked for no peppers, no olives, no pepperoncini, the addition of walnuts, tofu, extra tomatoes, extra cucumbers, extra beets and if they had it mushrooms. Finally I had asked for Herb vinaigrette dressing and was given green goddess. This would not have been as irritating if I had been given good customer service.
(1)Kimberly D.
Excellent food in a quaint little location on Woodward. I'm a non apologetic carnivore so I was a little skeptical of a vegan / vegetarian restaurant. Don't let that keep you from trying this place. I had the nachos and didn't even miss the meat. You can opt for non dairy cheese if dairy isn't your thing. Everything is very flavorful and they are generous with the portions. I'll be back. Healthy eating never tasted so well.
(4)Joe V.
Very lucky to live near Om. Friendly staff and delicious food have us coming back here regularly. Love the loaded vegan mac, kale salad and shaved Brussels sprouts. They always have interesting specials including weekly tacos and noodle bowl Wednesday. Can't really go wrong here. Brunch is #1 on my to-do list though need to get in for that still.
(5)MsMiya B.
Amazing vegetarian spot! My mother has been going there for years and we were so sad when they closed! Everything is fresh and made to order! Yum
(5)Emily T.
Have never had an experience here that was short of amazing! As a metro Detroit vegan, there's only a handful of restaurants to choose from. Om is definitely my favorite. Both carrying out and dining in have always been a pleasure. My favorite is the loaded vegan Mac for dinner, and the biscuits and gravy for brunch. The thing that really hits it out of the park at Om though, is their AMAZING dessert cakes. They are SO rich and creamy...and not to mention they're all vegan! I can't get enough of Om!
(5)Leann L.
My favorite restaurant in Ferndale. They are gluten free friendly. Their food is so flavorful. My fav right now is the vegan tacos.
(5)Taylor H.
That f***** kale salad. I know it's just a salad, but it was a flavor experience I would have never thought of. The tahini dressing was amazing as well. We also got the ginger cookies and they were so good.
(5)carly c.
WE LOVE OM! My fiancé and I eat in here as much as possible but often order carry out. The entire staff is friendly and inviting! We have never left less than thrilled with our experience. We love the food at Om! The tofu scramble is amazing and this morning I had some fresh blueberry pancakes that changed my life. We love the vegan Mac and cheese and the nachos! Om can do no wrong! In a city that doesn't generally cater to the vegan / vegetarian crowd we have found a true gem that not only caters to a meat- free preference but embraces it! You've gotta give this place a try! Best brunch in Ferndale!

I really love trying out vegetarian/vegan restaurants in this area, and had heard great things about Om, so I was really excited when I had the opportunity to try their food. I was raised eating mainly vegetarian and vegan dishes, and am a longtime fan of Inn Season. The seating area is nice. Staff was awesome, informative and attentive. However, the food was forgettable and disappointing, especially for the price. We ordered a glass of their wine which was OK. First, we had the om maki, which I actually enjoyed. It was weird but creative, and the tahini dressing was delicious. Just know that it is served warm. I had the cremini mushroom burger, and my boyfriend ordered the stir fry. The mushroom burger was just OK and the stir fry as well. Neither had any really great flavors going on. If I was judging just the appetizer, I would have given this a three star rating, but because I wasn't a fan of either of the main courses, I judged a little more harshly. My disenchantment with the main courses was mainly due to the overwhelming amount of salt in the dish that rendered the stir fry almost inedible (the amount of salt in the cremini burger was not quite as bad). The chef probably could have cut the amount of salt in half, it was that intense. Again, the service, appetizer, and dining experience were all pretty good, but the main courses suffered from lack of potential flavors due to a large amount of sodium. At the very least, I appreciated that Om is a restaurant that brings attention to the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and that most of their food is locally grown.

Food was awesome. Service was... well I'll just say today was an "off day" my server was non communicative. She brings one plate to the table at a time while the other parties ate waiting to feast. Then after the plate less parties waiting for an additional 15 mins we had to ask her what was going on.arty the end she gave us half off our cold lonely plate lol but overall a great dining experience.
(4)Abigail S.
My first visit. This is a quaint place with a fun vibe. I had the hot tea which was delicious and the friendly waitress never let my cup go dry. I had the miso soup which was ok but lacking in flavor. I also had the Quinoa protein salad large portion with tons of flavor. I will be back!
(4)Lil' D.
It took me a while, but I finally got around to dining at Om! I visited with three friends. The service was excellent, and all around the table we agreed that the food was good, but not very flavorful or exceptional. My friend's boyfriend and roommate loved the beer on special, and the red wine was good if you like it sweet, but not too sweet. I ordered the Cremini burger - it had a great texture, but I wish it had more flavor to it. The side salad with Shallot Mustard Vinaigrette was awesome, though - I would buy a bottle of the dressing. My friend and I shared a vegan mac & cheese appetizer, which for $5 was a small bowl. I liked that it was served with Sriracha, but it was otherwise not very flavorful, even with the panko breadcrumbs and green onion. Overall, we all enjoyed ourselves and had excellent service. I'll likely come back, but try a juice or entree salad.

I ate at this restaurant a few weeks ago for the first time. The food was good and the service was alright. However, I made the awful mistake of signing up for their mailing list. They now spam me daily with their menu and requests that I go vote for them in the ClickonDetroit Vote for the Best contest. There is no unsubscribe link in the emails they send out and all responses asking to be removed bounce back as undeliverable. I will not return to your establishment due to the excessive spamming.

This is the same restaurant with nearly the same macrobiotic and gluten free food that is exceptionally tasty and good for you. I used to be able to spot it easily - now it's neighbor, TOAST, is so glitzy I've been driving right by it. Enter backside, u can walk through Toast's outdoor patio.

Went to the OM Cafe Sat. evening with my wife and four others. We had reservations (6:45) and got seated right away. Things went downhill from there.Without going into excessive detail, our server pretty much chose to ignore us after bringing roasted Brussel sprouts and beverages. Eventually (about an hour later) entrees showed up one at a time. One of our party just ordered soup, which did not show up. After numerous efforts to get waitresses attention, my wife yelled out for her. Place went deadly silent. Then we were told that they had run out of soup (7 PM on a Sat. night). The cook came out and sincerely apologized for the poor service saying one of the cooks chose not to show up and the waitress was having to help out in the kitchen, and they comped us our meals. We left a $30 tip despite the waitresses rude behavior. People should just communicate better and tell customers what is going on rather than ignore them. We had gone to the OM Cafe based on several excellent reviews on the FF and on Yelp. The food we got, taco specials with black beans and squash were good but nothing special. Two vegetarian tacos, some corn chips and salsa for $13 is not something I will be rushing back to experience. I wish then luck but I doubt if any of our party (2 vegetarians included) will be hurrying back either. I realize that there will be circumstances that result in bad experiences like this, but don't just ignore your customers. We would have understood the problem. Being ignored doesn't solve anything.

OM Cafe was a comfortable and simple place to eat. Our group of five had a wide variety of the food that was offered. Every meal was interesting and creative, and we shared a little of everything. You certainly don't have to be an exclusive vegetarian to truly enjoy this. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone. I definitely will return. The best part was that the waitresses that we had was extremely helpful and friendly. Nobody seemed stressed and that imparted a peaceful atmosphere for our entire stay. The clientele was also friendly, so this seemed to be catching on the day we were there. I recommend enjoying the downtown and parking in the public parking. From there it is a short walk to the restaurant.
(5)Jason M.
I love Om! The food is great. The atmosphere is cozy. The staff is delightful. My wife and I aren't actually vegan. She has an allergy that it's easier to accommodate when we eat out if we just go to vegan restaurants. Sometimes that's a total drag and we feel very limited. But we never feel that way at Om. That is to say we would joyfully eat here even if we didn't have to. My only critique would be that they run out of vegan desserts too early. Their desserts are phenomenal, so it's always a bummer to learn there aren't any still available that my wife can have. If you're reading this review right now trying to decide where to eat, close your laptop or put your phone in your pocket now and head that way. You won't be disappointed... unless it's Sunday or Tuesday.
(5)Archana S.
A very off beat cafe for vegetarians. They have a limited menu, but something for everyone. The loaded Mac and cheese (with daiya instead of cheese) was the best thing I've had in a while!! The tempeh burger was pretty great too. That said, you will have to be patient; since they make everything fresh it takes a while for the food to come out to the table. Also, drive past the cafe and turn into the next street because parking and the main entrance are in the back.

I feel almost guilty but Om is not the bomb. Vegetarian food sometimes gets a bad rap from non-vegans, called rabbit food, dull, unseasoned plant matter or just plain strange. Yet vegan dishes can be outstanding, like Roast's heavenly brussel sprouts or the ethnic seasonings of India and the Middle East. Tabbouleh and hummus are matches made in heaven for any palate. Om's reputation as a front runner for vegetarian and vegan fare made it a pitstop for dinner one night more out of curiosity and a desire to sample the food. Even better, they have options beyond tofu and seitan for those who are inclined towards devouring real meat products. Snug against Toast, this restaurant has a bit more room but a rather odd rear approach. The kitchen appears to face Woodward, which helps to dampen sound somewhat. The interior is pleasant if a bit dark, and tables are quite close together. I found the ambiance to be one part tree hugger to two parts casual, and it would probably fit right in somewhere quiet on Maui. Minus the Maui Zowie weather, of course. Udon stir fry sounded plenty tasty on a rainy night, though the menu features a pretty eclectic mix of Asian fusion and standard fare; for example, they were doing a tempe hash of some kind while I was there. Udon are fat white Japanese noodles, great slithery lengths of noodled goodness usually served up in a flavourful broth or lightly stirfried at traditional Japanese restaurants. I wasn't particularly sure how the preparation would be at Om, but I figured something similar. The service wasn't bad and I had my stir fry in pretty short order. Right away I could tell three problems were at hand: one, it smelled slightly off in that it had pretty much no scent at all; two, the noodles weren't udon; three, the broth was lukewarm. I don't know how long it had been sitting out or if I just had bad luck in delivery. Not that the restaurant was particularly hopping. I poked at the stringy noodles and gave them a go. Meh. That sums up pretty much everything. Noodles on their own generally lack flavour unless freshly made and these babies were bland, white, and rather chewy. I gnawed my way through a small mouthful and turned to the broth for some kind of relief, but instead found traces of flavour diluted in a lot of water. I wish I'd snuck in a packet of soy sauce or a bottle of Kikkoman to alleviate the monotony. Given how much the food goes for, I couldn't stand to let it go to waste but I couldn't really do much to finish it. So I asked for the noodles to go with secret ambitions to spice them up with a dash of Penzeys Spices and a little sriracha or hoisin or teriyaki sauce. Abominable, but they were that dull. Bland and unflavoured food is the sign of culinary desperation, a kitchen-aid cry for help from someone so uninspired and miserable that she's about to commit spaghetti seppuku. Restaurants should not make "So uninspired you'll think it was made at home when your cupboards were bare!" as their prevailing mantra. I don't know whether this is a fluke or unique to Om, but reading the reviews leads me to think they just don't season their food heavily. That's not always a bad thing but if I'm forking over my hard earned cash, I expect some tasty culinary booty in return. Om just doesn't provide.
(2)April J.
I like this place a lot. They do have really good food and a decent selection, but the service is painfully slow. I highly recommend the stir fry and the brussel sprouts. It is a tiny restaurant so don't go with a large group. They also have very sporadic hours so be sure to check their website before you go.

Om is a pioneer among restaurants for vegan/vegetarian fare. It stands out among the very few restaurants in the metro area to not only carry, but specialize in vegan/vegetarian cuisine. If it wasn't the first, it was among the select few to have paved the way. Not only do they make special efforts to cater to the vegetarian, but also offer omnivores meat options to be inclusive and not force either one to have to settle. We started with the nori roll, their vegetarian and vegan version of a sushi roll. It was a nice vegetable roll, with fresh veggies, but their dipping sauce was interesting. I thought the sauce was good, but the tahini in it, gave it more of a puzzling flavor than a traditional soy with wasabi intensity. My entree was the BBQ Seitan, with sweet potatoes, brown rice, and collard greens. This was my first time having seitan, meat alternative made primarily of wheat, I thought they did a pretty good job with making it into a familiar flavor and texture. If I were to eat it by itself, it's probably not the most flavorful meatless entree, but with the bbq sauce, it improved it's standing. The sweet potatoes were cooked nicely, sweet and tender, but the collard greens were very bland. It appears they were steamed without any seasoning added afterwards. Vinegar was available at the table and after adding that to the greens, it was better, but not all that enticing to try again. I would try to substitute it out for something else next time. The atmosphere is very nice inside, small, quiet, quaint, and intimate. it's good for couples and small groups.
(3)S M.
Disappointing. I would say this is a no go for brunch. My friend has a soy allergy and they were not able to substitute tofu for eggs because "they have other dishes that actually need eggs". Someone else was eating pancakes that looked good. I got om basic eggs over easy but they were well done..not runny even a little. The menu looks good for lunch/ dinner but I wouldn't go back for brunch. I hear they're closing anyway...
(3)S G.
The service is great...food has a unique flavor to it..,got the vegan Mac , Brussels(loved them) and quinoa salad...the Brussels were tasty, and the vegan Mac is definitely worth a try..quinoa salad is for those with a a taste for healthy and subtle
(4)Michelle K.
I have been here twice now and enjoyed my meal both times. The maki rolls are amazing--get the tahini sauce, you will not regret it. I could bathe in that stuff. I shared the nachos with my friend and thought they were just alright, however, I am not a huge fan of onions and avocado so that might be my personal taste (since we were sharing I didn't have them removed). The mushroom burger is outstanding and my favorite thing I have eaten there thus far. I am an omnivore but I like healthy fresh food and Om Cafe fits the bill.
(4)Kelli O.
I was excited to try Om after seeing them at the VegFest this year, especially since it is right around the corner from me. I've been twice and both times I had delicious food. Most recently I had a tempeh sandwich and it was tasty - my only complaint was the bun was a little too crispy, almost burnt-like, but it didn't stop me from eating it! I've also had kale with lemon and it was so fantastic that I've started making it at home. Om is a small restaurant, but it's a quiet and cozy setting, and the staff is always very friendly. Can't wait to go back!
(4)John S.
Om Cafe has been around quite a while. Ive eaten here a few times, and always found my meals to be decent, but nothing out of this world spectacular. Oddly enough, I have yet to try their nori rolls, which is probably their most complimented dish, perhaps next time. In my experiences, the service has always been great, and the dishes have been adequate, to their billing. Its not going to always be a parade of flavors, some of the items are going to be a little bland, but considering its billing, it does fairly well. I have found good luck with their special menu items. This last time, I had the green bean casserole special, and it was pretty tasty, as were the cornbread sides, and potato cakes. The other components to the dish, the quinoa and brussels sprouts, lacked a bit in the flavor, and was a little too watery for my linking, but it wasnt too bad. I think brown rice would have served the theme of this dish a little better, the quinoa just seemed out of place without flavor to mix it into the dish, maybe something with a rosemary hint wouldve been nice. All in all, its not a place I crave, but I do like to go there every now and again. Its nice that they have a traverse city location now, perhaps I will enjoy a meal there on my next sleeping bear dunes excursion!
(3)Kevin S.
Great people serving delicious and healthy food at a reasonable price! We recommend the Tempeh Burger, BBQ dinner on Friday nights, baked spaghetti, nori rolls and the green goddess dressing! Enjoy!
(5)John B.
I've tried Om Cafe more than once. I spend $15 or $20 and don't seem to get much for my money. When I asked for some chips with my sandwich, they brought back a little plate with maybe a half dozen chips and tacked an extra $2 on my bill. As for the food, I find it to be bland and lacking flavor. Inn Season Cafe in Royal Oak blows Om Cafe away.
(1)Rebbie R.
As someone who tries to eat a healthy mostly plant based diet it was refreshing to find a full menu not only of things i could eat but things that were both delicious and healthy as well. My mother and I both had the quinoa protein salad and finished every bite.
(4)Angela D.
I'm not a health food lover or vegetarian by any means but this place makes eating healthy so delicious that I forget there's no meat. The nori rolls are vegetarian perfection and their carrot cake is to die for! Try the spicy ginger tea to clear your head. The only thing that drops down their rating is that it is not opened enough. I believe they are only open Mondays and Friday right now. The staff is a little too laid back. Save plenty of time because it's hard to get your bill and then pay it. But the patience pays off because the food has been good every time I've been here.
(3)N P.
Been here about 5 times. At first I don't think my body adjusted to this new style of food (I got the macrobiotic plate) so I waited to go back. The second visit was pretty delicious (I got the stir fry with some delicious tahini sauce I think). Portions were generous at both visits. The third time I got the stir fry again,, and the fourth I got sides (I think there was tofu, kale, and miso soup). Both of these times I thought portions sizes were pretty small for the price. I went back again after awhile with a friend and loved the stir fry again. Portions at this fifth visit were fair. Often I visit with famlly or with a friend who likes the place. Besides those 5 visits I think we've carried out a few times. Service has been good with all visits. I don't know if it's not the type of place for families but it always felt like service was better when it was just me and a friend. Anyway, I really like the place and wish they'd open another branch closer to me. I need to get back here and see if there are any changes.
(5)Amelia A.
Delicious and still healthy! A true Ferndale gem, I'm glad it's back open, though miss some of the macro-biotic menu items.
(5)Erich Z.
As a recently converted vegetarian, I've been checking out some new places to get my dinner fix. Om Cafe was high on my list because it's small, extremely Veg-friendly, and has a good reputation. The menu looked promising - they offered up a Tofu or Seitan BBQ with greens, Yams, a corn muffin, and brown rice. We also ordered an Avocado roll and some Ginger Tea. The Avocado roll was good, a pure and simple Maki roll, which I really enjoyed. For the main course we were a bit limited. They had run out of Tofu (!), so many menu options were simply unavailable. The Seitan BBQ was a bit greasy, the corn muffin extremely dry and bland. My greens arrived cold on the plate, and everything just needed a bit more "oomph" in the seasonings. The thing that really got me was the ginger tea. I expected a tea flavored with a bit of ginger, but what I received was just ginger-infused water. Super strong and totally undrinkable. I suppose it was my fault for ordering it, but even passing by waitresses commented how overpowering the scent was. I really wanted to love Om Cafe, but in all honestly, I make better veggie food on week nights at home.

So, as a vegetarian in Michigan I am always trying to hunt down new restaurants that offer more than just your basic vegetarian dishes, pasta primavera, and so forth. Thank Buddha for Ferndale's Om Cafe, where the selection of tasty food is aplenty. Located on 9 Mile in a lime green building next to toast, this restaurant is a heaven sent gift for vegetarians. Winning both local and national awards for their fare, Om Cafe offers diners everything from tofu rolls to nachos to their macrobiotic plate. For those leery of tofu and seitan, Om may be a bit nerve wrecking, but the cooks here do an incredible job. I've eaten here several times with my carnivore friends and after dining at Om had a whole new respect for tofu. Entrees will cost you about 10 bucks, but for a healthy, organic meal that ain't bad. I'm always so into the food here that I hardly ever manage to notice the setting I'm in. the delicious food and great service makes me not even care if I was dining in a sandbox. If you're looking to dine a bit healthier, bring your appetite to Om. I bet you'll be surprised!

I have been here twice. The first time I got the macrobiotic bowl which was good but nothing extraordinary and last night I got the stir fry with gluten free noodles which was amazing! The place is small, quaint and a little romantic with all the candle light and soothing music. The servers have been super nice both times so overall a delicious solid choice when looking for healthy alternatives other than the usual Inn Season or Cacao Tree.

We enjoyed our dinner there this evening. I had soba noodles with fresh vegetables and onions. It was a bit watery. They gave some options for a sauce and I had tahini. With some soy sauce, the seasoning was right and it was a healthy meal. My husband had nachos which he enjoyed. A friend had the pita pizza. She enjoyed it. Her hus had vegetables on brown rice. He said it was good. We also ordered avocado sushi. For dessert we had scones (very dry), an apple tartan (ok) and I had the chocolate pudding cake (the cake was pretty heavy and dry but the frosting was yummy). Our bill came to $80, so each paid approximately $20 for dinner. Parking was tight. It was a pleasant experience.

This has become my favorite vegetarian restaurant. Everything I have had has been great. The service is good and the interior is nice. I love the arugula and roasted potato salad. Also the mushroom sliders are awesome. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yummy!! Everything was delicious! The Nori Roll with tahini sauce is to die for! I could eat it every day for the rest of my life! The decor was very modern, and simple. Very quaint. And welcoming for children. So pleased with this place! Defiantly an instant fan.

For Restaurant week in Ferndale we decided to try someplace that we've been meaning to check out and just never have. See I'm a long time vegetarian and I generally don't like vegetarian restaurants. Weird huh? But we had a Vegan friend in town so the stars were aligned. We ordered the vegan sushi and it was so good but omg the wasabi was the hottest I've ever encountered! That's not a complaint. It means that it's ultra fresh and that's a great thing but beware. Serious the merest schmere will explode your sinus. We also ordered the mushroom burger which is a veggie burger made of mushroom and grains. Notice the order, mushrooms first which makes all the difference and gives it a dynamic mushroom-full flavor. We had some other stuff too all of which was delicious and the staff finding that we had never been there before seemed genuinely happy to add us to the family of visitors. Overall great experience.

I never leave reviews anywhere, but feel compelled to do so for OM because it's one of my favorite restaurants in the area and needs to get the recognition it deserves! I have turned on friends and family to this place as well. While I am vegan, I have brought many non-veg friends here and they loved everything. My personal favorites are the tempeh burger, the raw kale salad, the maki roll or nachos. They also have good specials that are worth trying out. Yes, it's small and the food can take some time to make, but I don't mind waiting when I know I'm getting a good meal every time.

I had the Seitan Sliders on lunch special. They were DELICIOUS! I can't wait to go back and try more!! This is how good vegetarian food should be!

El Mexicano seems to be everyone's favorite in my family. The Nori Roll is also very good. On my last visit, I got the black bean chili which I loved. For dessert, get the carrot cake if they have it.

For a nice, delicious, healthy meal, Om Cafe is great. Both times I've dined here, I've ordered the special and it's been phenomenal. Last Saturday I ordered tempeh patties with mashed potatoes and gravy and it was a perfect blend of the comfort food I remember eating as a child and the strong, delicious flavors of the 21st century. And I don't know what they do to kale there, but somehow they make a steamed superfood taste like heaven. My only criticism of the restaurant is that the menu is not particularly accessible to the average SAD (standard american diet) consumer. They don't have the standard burrito/pasta options that omni's tend to order in vegetarian restaurants. As a long time vegan, that's not an issue for me, but I'd be reluctant to bring some people here. Also, for the atmosphere and price, my meals would be greatly improved if they served wine.
(5)Leah R.
I've only eaten there once, so I can't say much about most. But what I did have, which was some sort of BLT with tempeh instead of bacon was really bland. BLT's used to be one of my favorite comfort foods and since I've become vegetarian I've found it hard to replace. I make tempeh BLTs at home that turn out pretty ok and was hoping this would be better. Really, though, it was mostly meh. Most the restaurants in the area have great vegetarian options so probably won't go out of my way again to eat here.

OM has become a go-to spot for me when I want something quick (unless you order the OM burger -- made to order and takes about 15 minutes!) that I know will have me feeling great and not sluggish after. OM has recently expanded its hours and menu. I'm not sure why, but I'm slightly addicted to the salsa they make. It's perfect, and served with chips from a local company. My go-to is to get the nori roll (the tahini dressing they serve it with is bonkers) and whatever soup they have. It's simple and delicious. They've added tons of stuff to the menu though and even have their own wine now. The entrees that contain fish (though I don't eat it, but other friends/relatives do) definitely get a little pricy, but they use the best of ingredients, so that is why (and appreciated). I would also say if you haven't been here lately, give it a try again. I'm sure it was wonderful before, but now that it's open more than once a week I think a new system is in place and it's running smoothly. I love everyone on staff! So friendly and helpful. They seem to be the kind of people who will truly take suggestions to heart, so speak up if you have ideas or were unhappy. I'm sure they will make it right. P.S. Michelle L. No, we don't like our shit bland. Bummer the food you got wasn't up to snuff -- I've never eaten those particular dishes.

Oh Om...how I really wanted to like you...but I just can't do it. The food it completely flavorless. This was the second time I've gotten carry out from Om, and it just doesn't measure up. I am not sure if it is because they don't use animal products or if vegetarians just like their shit bland...but this food seriously tastes like nothing. We ordered the rice stir fry and the udon stir fry. The rice stir fry literally tastes like bland brown rice. I'm not sure if they even use a sauce or anything. Yes, the rice and veggies were cooked perfectly but that is not enough for me. I need flavor! The udon had slightly more flavor, but the udon were not udon...they were linguini noodles, which are completely different. We also got the miso vegetable soup, which looked like it would have a lot of rich flavor because the broth was so dark, but nope...flavorless brown water basically...thankfully we ordered scallions on it to give it a slight hint of something. I took one bite of that and was done. Honestly, my boyfriend and I had to go out to a second dinner because we were still hungry and not satisfied at all. Somehow we paid the same amount for ribs, pulled pork, a sandwich, and 2 sides as we did for 2 stir fry and a soup...SO not worth it. I don't know how you vegans or vegetarians do it. I would waste away to nothing eating that stuff! I will give Om props on their desserts though. I had one of the better chocolate chip cookies I've ever had the first time I went. So, at least you can get your sweet tooth satisfied, just not sure about anything else. Sorry Om...

i work in royal oak, and being one of the two vegans in the office, we often get om cafe or inn season cafe carry out for lunch. the special of smothered tempeh with mushroom gravy and mashed potatoes is literally the best vegan food i have ever had. it must take them forever to make, because they only have it once every few months. they somehow get the tempeh to be extremely soft and not bitter at all. the texture is awesome too. i have gone once to actually dine in at om cafe. i ordered the "el mexicano" which was basically cold beans on tortilla chips, avocado and LITERALLY a whole salad on top of it. the tofu they put on it was cold and their salsa is not very good. kind of disappointing. as for their other food, i'd say it's mediocre at best. a lot of it is lacking in flavor, and the desserts aren't very good either. i'm giving them four stars for their smothered tempeh alone because the dish is so good. it's pretty pricey too. two pieces of cheesecake and two orders of the tempeh came out to $40. if you're looking for good vegan baked goods and more flavorful food, i'd go to inn season!

This green building on Woodward Avenue is a little vegetarian/vegan/macrobiotic/seafood restaurant. The price seems a little higher than other restaurants, but the organic ingredients and big servings make up for it. The food is pretty good, plus you can feel good about eating well. When you are too busy to cook but tired of pizza and takeouts, you can come to this place for healthy meals. Even if you are not big fan on non-meat meals, you should try their dessert menu. I'm sure you will be surprised how good their vegan cakes taste.

The best vegetarian food in Metro Detroit !

This seems like a pretty solid place to get food, but some of the dishes could use... something. I took my husband with the promise of meat-eater acceptable dishes (fish and "good food," per other Yelpers). Half the restaurant is kitchen (the front half, so enter through the back) and the other half is cramped dining tables. Good for half-capacity, but on a Friday night it was just nutty. The two waitresses looked stressed and hurried, so I didn't get an overly "friendly" vibe when I walked in, but the patrons all seemed to be in good spirits. It was a very diverse crowd, which we liked. We were afraid it would be all suburban-crunchy-granola-hippy-types, but there were folks from all walks and we loved that. I ordered the BBQ Seitan special, which comes with greens, candied yams, brown rice, and choice of soup (I chose Miso). We ordered the hummus to start. The husband ordered the ginger udon noodles. I sort of knew we were in trouble when the husband couldn't find anything to ignite his palate, but I was happy with the overall food selection, being a lazy vegetarian. The portions were true to other Yelpers' descriptions, so I was excited at first. Well, let's review. The hummus was lacking citrus, per my husband, but it was just my type. The whole-grain pita that they accompany it with was delicious and made an excellent breakfast the next day! Two thumbs up from me, One from my husband. We'll split the difference at 1.5 thumbs up. Now, onto dinner...The candied yams were good. Sweet, but not overpoweringly so. The greens were good and considering I hate greens, this is saying something. The rice was overcooked, but the type of rice they used was actually quite good; it is very hearty. The corn muffin was TO DIE FOR and I would order than again any time. The miso soup was high-soy sauce based, vs. "yellow broth" miso. It was a mellow flavor, but didn't do much for my taste buds. The seitan was crispy on the outsides and mush in the middle, with a thick, tasteless BBQ sauce on it. I took two bites and left the rest. The husband's noodles were half-cold and the sauce didn't have that punch you would expect. His leftovers are still in the 'fridge awaiting composting... I'm not eating them, that's for sure. Overall I'd give Om Cafe another chance. I like the food and the vibe way more than my husband did. My biggest complaint is that just because it is vegetarian/vegan food, does not mean that it has to be tasteless! Punch it up a notch and surprise my taste buds. Otherwise I could replicate your dish at home! Do something to break the "tasteless veggie fare" stereotype that folks have. But next time I head over there, I'll be taking my crunchy-granola-hippie friends with me instead of the man that I married.

Om used to be our Friday night spot. We have not been there for very long time, but decided that last friday we were in the mood. Food was great and service was great. Love the avocado roll and barbecued tofu with collard greens, brown rice and the best corn muffin. The blueberry lemon cake is incredible. I love the OM and I wish they were open more often, As of right now they are only opened Friday and now offering some limited carry out on Thursday.

Great vegan food, highly recommend the sesame tofu soba dish, very delish. Food was piping hot and fresh. Service was great, manager Jason remembered me by name because I had called earlier in the day. Even got a complimentary scone, can't beat the service!!

Looking for those crazy healthy food lovers? Well for an effortless target, of healthy hardcore citizens, peer into the back door of Om Café. For the past 13 years, I have been a core and loyal customer at OM Café. I often bully my non-vegan friends to try this restaurant and so far they have all enjoyed, no regrets!!! Located on Woodward Avenue, in Ferndale, it's a quiet and quaint abode. The atmosphere is balanced, charming and calming. Even with a small dining area and patrons at times elbow to elbow, no chaos is absorbed at this restaurant. OM is not just for vegetarians, the menu is diverse, serving fish their menu is attuned to the guidelines of the macrobiotic diet. Crisp filtered water, Organic Coffee, Ginger Soda and even Wine if you are into that classy and elegant touch. Hot organic homemade soups, special OM salad dressing and tasty desserts!! My favorite meal is BBQ Seitan.... OHHHH OHHHH OMG is it Friday yet. Ask me, the dork, why I wrote this review on a Wednesday? They only serve this meal on Friday nights and if you don't get their early enough they could run out. This meal is served with Seitan and BBQ sauce, corn muffin, yams and collard greens. Yum! Besides the BBQ Seitan (drooling :)~) they have some other great dishes and appetizers. Sautéed Tofu, Nori Rolls, Hummus, Macrobiotic Platter, Greek Salad, The Mexican Platter and much more. Over the last 5 years the restaurant has updated their interior and adjusted their hours. I even heard the owner was trying to sell the business. A few other tidbits... Enter through the back!! Entering through the front is a faux pas and it might take a few visits before you are relived of that dishonor. ;-) For parking, be aware that their 10 car parking lot is shared with a neighbor bar so parking can be a challenge during their busy times. In respects to the staff, it is a mixed bunch, the better you are known the better you are treated. I think my last sentence is true in most places of business. Well, it's getting late and my kitty cat is beginning to look like a Friday night meal at OM. I think I need to end this review before I gobble down my cat.

This place has pretty good vegan desserts, and soups, as for the food....that is a different story. I have tried the vegan BBQ which is what I heard is SO GREAT well, I was disappointed, it came with corn bread that was dry and bland. The greens and yams were bland as well. The mock BBQ was just seitan with BBQ sauce no REAL flavor! Also, if you go there after 5:00 on a Friday they are almost out of everything. It's like you look at the big menu board of the specials and you ask to order it and you get a reply "We are out of that" and most of the time it is still displayed on the board...what's the purpose if you're out of it?! To sum it all up the sweets and soups are the only good items so far.

Great, healthy vegetarian spot with some seafood option. They have a focus on macrobiotics and their small, basic menu has a lot of healthy options. I loved that they had fresh carrot juice on the beverage menu. I also enjoyed their ginger cake after the meal. While it's on Woodward avenue, looking for it the first time is challenging, parking and entrance is in the back, the front facade is small and hard to notice from the street.
(4)Kalyn M.
Excellent food. My fave: Nori rolls.
(5)Cassie Z.
I love this place forever. My favorite will always be the macro plate & they make it way better at this location than the Traverse City one, but that's entirely my opinion. I've love everything else I've had here too. My one qualm is that they don't serve kombucha at the Ferndale location for some reason, but no big deal since that stuff's hella expensive anyway.
(5)Lillian L.
This is a small, quiet, and quaint place. I had the Cremini Mushroom Burger with Raw Kale Chopped Salad. The burger was absolutely delicious with a fantastic texture. The burger definitely did not have a mushroom taste to it at all. The salad was very good also, the tahini and plum vinegar dressing was a whipped butter consistency and alone was a very interesting taste, however, in the salad it was pretty good. Would I go back? absolutely! am I going to go out of my way to go back? no, there are way too many amazing places in Ferndale, and although this place is pretty great it is lower on my "amazing" list. Cremini Mushroom Burger-mushroom, walnut, organic brown rice blend with lettuce, tomato, red onion, garlic aioli Raw Kale Chopped Salad - kale, walnut, pepperoncini, onion, tomato, red pepper, broccoli, ginger, cucumber, avocado, tahini & plum vinegar.
(3)Kristin C.
Love their food been going since they opened. New owner is keeping it open for more hours. And brunch on the weekends. I love the nori rolls and their Greek salad the best.
(5)Keith K.
This is your spot for a simple, healthy and pretty cheap meal.

Om deserves more props than they get. I went here with my very non vegetarian boyfriend and we both really liked the food and the overall experience. I love a good vegetarian restaurant and sadly I live 1.5 blocks from Inn Season but stopped going there because the staff are the types of people who help perpetuate the stereotype of a-hole Vegans "earthy types." My boyfriend got the quinoa beer and I had the $5 glass of wine and both were good. Inn Season serves no alcohol so they beat them out there as well. I tried the Cremini burger and enjoyed it; I loved the shallot mustard vinagerette dressing on the salad. It was unexpectedly good. My boyfriend got the nachos (so naturally I ate my share of them) and they were awesome and a very generous portion. We also had the tofu curry appetizer which we also enjoyed. The service was good and it has a good ambience. Good background music and an overall nice vibe. I am excited to go back!
(4)Christopher D.
I love coming here for real food in a ~\~ calm environment. Nice servers. I'm not macro or vegetarian, I am a REAL food lover and the OM Cafe brings you good REAL food. The Macrobiotic "long life", tofu and seitan are my current recommendations. Update back again the deserts are...marvelous I love the Mexican plate and the vegetable stir fry with noodles
(5)Edward M.
We're so glad we finally got to try Om Cafe tonight, now I just wish it was sooner. We started with the light miso soup as well as the cashew corn chowder soup...both were incredible...you could taste that it was homemade with love. And we needed to try the vegan mac starter with coconut curry sauce and sriracha...awesome. For dinner we had the smothered tempeh (!!!) and udon veggie stir fry (!!!!!). Smaller dessert menu, which is fine, since the carrot cake and choco coconut cake were both divine. I wish I knew the server's name, since she deserves a mention. She knew all about the menu, gave great advice on what to order, and was genuinely friendly...hard to find these days. We'll be back...all the time.
(5)Tricia O.
Love the om cafe! They have awesome dishes, very fresh, great vibe, I would recommend this to any one! You want quality, great service and good food - this is the place!
(5)Mary B.
I have clearly been missing out by not trying this place sooner. My first time here was for Ferndale Restaurant Week and I had the cremini mushroom burger with kale salad. It was so delicious and fresh. Inside the restaurant it is small and quant. The service is great and the food is amazing. Yesterday I dined at their Traverse City location and it was fantastic.
