I never visit chain restaurants, however watching the building being built all winter made my curios nature run into overdrive. I had the pick 2 combo, the brisket was lacking in flavor, I smothered it in sauce after the third bite. The Mac & Cheese was the worst I've ever had. I would be shocked to find that they actually use any cheese in the making of this recipe, It was more of a chemical composite of yellow liquid goo. I will give them credit, after my review they did reach out to offer amends that to me is worth one more star! Class act.

Place is horrible. If you want BBQ inspired fast food, sure, give it a go. If you want BBQ served fast, skip this joint and go somewhere else. The food has about as much quality and pride as McDonalds, BK, or Wendy's, but the aforementioned places won't make you feel as bad after pounding one of their combo meals. I ate here today for the first time and I won't be going back. Horrible, and I feel like crap now. Mac and cheese, nothing special, tastes like boxed mac and cheese. Beans, gross, no flavor, no meat. Pulled pork, virtually no smoke flavor at all. Sauce was decent. Roll was actually good.

Heard a lot about this BBQ via the media, then after reading the reviews I had to stop and try this chain style restaurant. First; for a chain BBQ spot.... they are above any other currently in the southeastern region. Ribs - 8, Pulled Pork - 9 and Brisket - 9. The sides are above average, again if you're looking for somewhere to satisfy your BBQ craving, this is the place. My overall experience was a 8 out of 10. I qill be visiting them again.

At brew at the burgh, they really came through with the pulled pork hoagies. They were huge and full of some great stuff and a BBQ sauce.

Finally, some BBQ in Ferndale, though purists may object since it's not the typical BBQ establishment like a Lockhart's, Slow's or Bad Brad's...but it's pretty decent for a fast grab and go type spot and the price is right. A solid 3.5+ stars. I had the 3 meat plate with their pulled pork, beef brisket and spicy cheddar sausage. At $13 including two sides and a roll it was a steal. Their Mac n' Cheese was creamy and similar to a Velveeta cheese sauce which was pretty solid. Something crunchy on top would've made this amazing. The Green Beans with Bacon were pretty tasty but I didn't see any actual bacon and the bacon flavor was subtle at best...but I liked them. Their rolls are buttery and warm and I should've used it as a sandwich bun for the pile of meat. You may want two of them. The meats themselves were great. The pulled pork was tender and fairly juicy. The brisket was again tender and had a nice smoke ring on it and the cheddar sausage was just the right amount of spicy and had pockets of cheddar running throughout the link. It was all pretty fantastic. The only thing I didn't get was any Q sauce with the meal...not sure how I forgot that but it could've only made everything that much better. I dig this place. It's affordable and fast and the service was friendly and genuine. The manager even thanked me at the door for dropping by. Worth a stop for sure.

Hello Hello Hello : ) Tried them 5 times...and here is my experience... The staff is SUPER FRIENDLY...to say that almost seems like I work there but I do not, the three guys behind the counter each time seemed more friendly than Mr Rogers. I do have to say that twice when I went in there was a employee (sorry don't know her name) that was sitting at a table playing on cell that said "Hey" as I entered. Those guys are hard working, she needs to learn what a job with the public means. Friendly Customer Service. The lowdown on some foods I had... Big Sandwich, sliced beef brisket Big Sandwich, pulled pork Side of Cole Slaw Side of Mac N Cheese Side of Waffle Fries Side of Jalapeno Beans Side of Barbecue Beans If you sign up for their email they will send you an email for a free pop. The food is overpriced for what you get, I am comparing to Slow's and Lockhart's and Famous Dave's and Billy Simms. Since they are chainlike and not off my own grill : ) They have 3 sauces...sweet, regular, spicy...all are great !!!! the food though is not cooked with sauce and you have to add after cooking : ( the side are very small and do not fill the container. Sadly "Two thunbs down" I was waiting and hoping more from this bbq place in Ferndale. Do yourself a favor and skip it.

Disclosure: I went here for a blogger dinner so we got free food, dessert, and a drink. I wanted to try out Dickey's since there's one near me in Troy, so this worked out perfectly. I had the two-meat plate (chicken and pulled pork) with the onion tanglers and waffle fries as my sides. It's normally like $11.50 which is a fair price, plus they do specials during the week on specific 2- or 3-meat plates. The chicken was good, the pulled pork was a little fatty. I liked the "sweet" BBQ sauce best, the "regular" one was good too. The onion tanglers were FANTASTIC, waffle fries were good. We got a pecan pie slice too which I took to go and ate the next day, it was also very good. Dickey's always has FREE ICE CREAM (yes, I repeat, FREE), which is dairy-free froyo and also tasted good - dairy-free doesn't always taste good to me. Convenient location too, right on Woodward, and parking in the back (also free!). I will be back here or to the Troy location sometime soon for some good BBQ :).

After I posted that review, Dickey's management got in touch with me and promised to make everything right. The manager hand delivered a family meal to us and it was fabulous. We have been back several times since and it appears they have worked everything out. Highly recommend.

Had the ribs at Dicky's for dinner last night. They were well seasoned and tasty. Alongside, I went with the potato salad that had a strong dill taste - it was different but very good! The fried onion tanglers were crispy & salty.

The anticipation built for weeks as we watched the construction of a new local BBQ joint just blocks from home. Though it was a franchise barbecue joint I still had high hopes that it would become a favored local haunt. Finally, they opened this week and we even waited a couple days further to allow them to get their staff and processes in order. The day of feasting soon arrived and with much delight I opened the containers and wrappers to find.... ...one of the most tasteless and bland brisket sandwiches I've ever bitten into. Even after slathering it in their sauce I found myself yearning for *Arby's* -- seriously, it was that disappointing. The Mac and Cheese instantly reminded me of KFC's (think Kraft and squeeze cheese). The 'Barbecue Beans'? Like opening an old can of Heinz (except the Heinz would have more flavor). The good? Ummm....it didn't make me sick and my stomach is full now. Pretty damned far from satisfied though. I suppose if you're the type who goes to Applebee's while on vacation and thinks Pizza Hut has good pizza then you *might* like the fare at Dickey's. But what if you want *good* barbecue? Go to LazyBones...or Slow's...or Lockhart's...but avoid this franchise joint that sells disappointment with Bland sauce.

Was good ! I did not know it was a chain , I may have changed my mind about going had I known . Nice meat and sides choices . Very tasty . Maybe slightly overpriced for what it is . Only 3 sauces to choose from . Free ice cream . All in all not awesome but not terrible

I'm loving this place as a quick service meal that satisfies and isn't too expensive. I get 3 meats and 2 sides for $13.25 with bread and pickles and onions. The spicy cheddar sausage is my new jam. The inside is a little dark and like a Roadhouse, but the service is warm and inviting.

I've been to Dickey's in Ferndale twice and both experiences were great! Texas style BBQ that rivals any local option. I had a 1/2 pound each of brisket, pulled pork, and sausage for the main course. I don't need the bread, but I don't usually eat it at other BBQ places like Rudy's or Salt Lick. The sides were sufficient but unmemorable. The key for me is the spicy standard sauce that comes in ample amount when taking to go (as I did both times). Staff was very friendly and helpful. However, my concern is the size of this place, as it's rarely crowed with more than a few tables full. Makes me think it will be a struggle to stay open. Hope I'm wrong.

Wasn't expecting much here because I know its fast food. I don't really have another fast food BBQ join to compare it to but it's on the same level as McDonald's etc, just more expensive. Brisket was not tender and was over seasoned Ribs were very tough and over seasoned. I honestly would have rather had a McRib. Pulled pork was dry and flavorless Sides were standard, batch made and not exciting at all. Roll was actually really good. Staff was nice but they ordered a pizza for delivery when I was there, which speaks volumes about the food at Dickies.

It was hit or miss there for a minute, but it has really improved. Craig, the manager I assume, was extremely helpful and friendly. Our food was good and who doesn't love waffle fries. The dining area is clean and has a picnic feel. The staff greeted us when we walked in and was nice and friendly even while waiting on my 3yo to make up his mind. Also kids eat free on Sunday's and there's always free ice cream!

  • Rebecca C.

Ferndale is rarely kind to chain restaurants, so to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I'm glad to report that I was wrong. The staff is super friendly, the location is great, and the price is right (kids eat free on Sunday, and with our buy one get one free coupon, we had dinner for about $18!). The food is pretty good - is it Slows? No. But it's tasty, and a step up from fast food. My only complaint: Dickey's runs out of food quickly. I've eaten there three times, each time they had run out of one of their main entrees. The last time I ate there, they were out of briskey, cheddar sausage, and chicken - which seems a little ridiculous. Thankfully I like pulled pork the most. Overall, it's a decent, reasonably priced place for food. I'll be back for more.

Dickey's is definitely above average for a chain, which is why I'm giving it five stars. The uber friendly staff, Spicy Cheddar Sausage, hot rolls and free ice cream each get a star -- and I'm adding one more star because Dickey's is diversifying Ferndale's carry out mix, which is much needed. Sure, if you're expecting BBQ like you'd get in the dirty south, Dickey's probably won't tickle your fancy. But if you go in with realistic expectations, I think you'll be satisfied if not pleasantly surprised. The first time my friend and I went there it was about 20 minutes before closing (something we generally avoid so as not to get side eye and an earful of vacuum noise from the staff that wants to go home). In this case, we were just too hungry. Much to our surprise and delight, Dickey's staff was totally attentive and friendly. They asked what we had a taste for, gave us samples (including a try of the Spicy Cheddar Sausage, which was ridiculously good). They seemed enthused about the menu. And they even helped suggest the best way to place our order so we'd get the most bang for our buck (since you can order the meats as a meal or by the pound). The service was 5 star -- especially for a chain. I ordered the brisket meal, which came with a super yummy smushy hot roll I fashioned into a brisket sandwich. The combination made for a tasty satisfying carry out dinner (with leftovers to spare). The brisket was tender with a nice smokey flavor. My friend ordered the Spicy Cheddar Sausage sandwich which was super delicious as well. We shared two sides -- the Creamy Coleslaw and the Baked Potato Casserole. The Creamy Coleslaw was good -- not too creamy or soggy. The Baked Potato Casserole was rather bland and boxed potatoey. We both didn't finish that side. Overall, I'd say Dickey's is a solid, convenient place to get BBQ without trekking out to Slow's (which is kind of overrated anyway). If you've got a hankering for BBQ on the fly, definitely give Dickey's a try. Hey, that rhymes.

Picked up a pulled pork sandwich and some mac and cheese. It was great. Best bbq that I have ever had that wasn't an independent place. Staff is friendly and fast.

Caveat Emptor. Must adhere to that motto every time I think of giving a corporate chain strip mall restaurant a chance...for my stomach would have been the better for it. This Texas-based chain didn't do their market research exhaustively enough. Slow's? Lazybones? ARBY'S? "It's Michigan, they won't know good brisket!" Um, we do. Properly creative metaphors elude me when trying to describe the tasteless meat I kept ingesting because my belly was knocking on the roof of my mouth. Dickey's brags about smoking their meat on site with hickory. I don't think their hickory is like our normal Earth hickory because there is absolutely no taste beyond the obligatory smoke. No color, no depth of flavor, not really juicy, nothing at all. Bland bland bland! And the sauce didn't help. And the sides were mediocre at best. On the plus side, the staff were really friendly and helpful. If you have to have your 'que served super fast, just...don't. Have something else. My stomach wishes it did.

Have you ever just wanted some dickies in your mouth? Well yelpers, the other night I did after I was half in the bag from the FestivALE, I strolled down the ol' avenue and thought, ya know my gal is probably hungry and my parents live down the the street, and before ya know it the whole family wanted a helping of dickies meat. I ordered the family thing, it was 44.95 but you get two choices of that moist tender dead animal, and 2 sides with rolls, but you have to have buns on deck if you're getting the pulled pork. My meat choices (pulled pork, beef brisket) were served in a generous helping and was enough to feed 4 drunk adults. Though upon seeing the side portions, they seemed to be single servings. After bringing this up to the manager and reminding him I'm paying 50 bucks to put all this meat in my family's mouth, he politely threw in 2 extra sides of the same choices, for free, which was a nice gesture, and I'll more than likely return based on that gesture. I consider myself a bbq aficionado of sorts and the place is getting a 4-banger due to service, food quality...a loosely bolted 3.

Yikes. This staff was a mess! My sandwich was cold on top of it not being prepared the way I asked (simple simple request). I would have brought it to their attention, but they seemed a little busy addressing other people's issues. Unfortunately for them, I'm not the only person who has had problems w this place-- and this location JUST opened. The food isn't bad ass enough to make up for the whack experience. I hope the best for them. x_x

Ok not Great. Was not expecting mac and cheese to come from a warm bag since the BBQ was supposed to be in-house. Had the pulled pork which was dry. Baked beans are good. BBQ sauce was good. If you are looking for great BBQ keep driving down to Royal Oak. Staff was ok.

Food Don't expect REAL BBQ. Ribs (7/10): Tender, good smoked flavor, too salty Brisket (0/10): It wasn't even brisket. It was potroast. Flavorless potroast. Pulled pork (7/10): I would order it again. Sides (3/10): Nasty, cafeteria-like mac and cheese. Rolls left much to be desired. And what kind of a "side" are pickle and onion slices?? Those are supposed to go on a burger... Decor Overall, weird. They kind of have a western thing going on, but the tacky table cloths and napkin dispensers make it feel like a Wendy's. When I was there, they had TVs tuned to a football game with the volume set far too loud. Steak house? Fast food joint? Sports bar? What are you, Dickey's? Sanitation UGH! One of the kids working there was dishing up food, taking money, then going right back to dishing up food without changing his gloves. Ugh. Train your people, Dickey's. If it was the only place open, I would reluctantly consider returning, but it definitely can't shake a stick at the plethora of other unique, enjoyable restaurants in Ferndale.

Love this place makes me feel like I'm in Texas on a ranch roping cows chilling around a camp fire with the fellas. That pulled pork sausage sandwich is the best.

I thought this place was really cool. I didn't have to go someplace fancy to get my BBQ on. They pile the meat high on the sandwiches. Even though the ice cream wasn't the best, it was FREE!

  • C B.

Hmmmm. Let's start with the positive; The waffle fries were excellent as well as the service but the ribs, baked beans and beef brisket I would skip. I ordered the two meat dinner and was disappointed with both. The two small bones I received were in fact one bone as the second bone was the end, and that was very tough. Not to mention, I found the ribs to be very dry. After adding the sauce, the ribs improved only slightly. The beef brisket, also dry, was just ok after the sauce. The baked beans were somewhat spicy, which I have never tasted in baked beans, lacked the bacon, onions, and brown sugar. Overall, The food tasted like it came from a chain restaurant. I'm glad I tried it but I've tasted better and have cooked better given that I am not a chef.

Just went today. They have great food and fair prices especially for a chain. Their customer service is very welcoming and helpful. And to top it all off... They have free ice cream. Cmon. You can't beat that.

Any and every chance I can get, I gotta get me some barbecue. Everything from the service to the food is great. Refills on the sodas and soft drink fountain and you gotta get an ice cream cone!

Hi, I actually just got home from this restaurant. It was ok. I got the jalapeno cheddar sausage and brisket with mac and cheese/waffle fries and my boyfriend got the full rack of ribs with waffle fries. He hated his ribs. He is used to true fall off the bone ribs and these were not even close. They were very chewy and attached to the ribs. My food was ok, but didn't seem like that much. We do not plan on going back there again.

    (2)
  • D K.

The ribs were "fall off the bone" tender and very tasty. We were slightly confused by the lack of sauce until we found the "help yourself to the sauce you like" sauce bar at the side. The staff was disorganized, but the place just opened so they weren't in the grove yet. I'm giving them a pass for untogether service until I visit there again in a few weeks. Don't bother about the free soft serve ice cream. it was awful.

I went to Dickey's with the expectation of average quality BBQ considering it is a chain, however I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the three-meat plate with brisket, ribs, and jalapeno cheddar sausage. All of the meats were very flavorful and well cooked. The baked potato casserole was pretty good as well. Green beans with bacon was average, would have liked a little more flavor, however not the worst I've had by far. I ordered online and my order was ready in 15 minutes. Will definitely go back!

The best part about living in Ferndale is watching all the people with horn-rimmed glasses give their liberal arts degree a solid workout- and people told you it was useless. You're very unique and interesting. That being said, it's a locally-owned franchise. It's fine. I've had better, I've had worse, but I concur the pulled pork is a bit fatty for my tastes. The brisket was better than I expected and if you're not expecting some Guy Fieri wet dream (you're welcome, for that visual), you'll be satisfied with the flavor, portions and service. It's decent fast-casual. It's not horrible just because it's not in Corktown. Simmer down, Emylee and Dexter.

Guys, this is fast food bbq. It's not bad for that. had I been expecting something better, I would have given this 2 stars. The meats are fair, just not great. I absolutely did not like the brisket, I would stick with the pork. Now I do like the sides. I will say this, if it's between here and Billy Sims, I'm choosing here as the meats are close to the same and the sides are better.

First time customer. Heavy-handed with the rub on the ribs, waaay too much cayenne. Cole slaw was bland, fried okra was good but, too much cayenne in the batter. BF had pulled pork, it was cold on the outside and warm inside, he said it was good. The BBQ baked beans were good, didn't try his Mac and cheese. Had a coupon for buy one get one so we tried it. Not likely we will order from there again.
