0 stars from me- I have encountered the most condescending, better than thou, undereducated manager in my life there today! I was just in your restaurant at exactly 10:47 AM this morning September 18. I was greeted by the bartender who was unsure and asked how I got in? I said the side door I always come in was open. She said we don't open till 11. I stated well the door was open and proceeded to ask if I could fill out an application and if you needed a really good cook. She gave an app, and I asked if I could fill it out there or should I take it with me? She said I could sit over in dining area and fill it out. She then asked a plain dressed guy in a grey t-shirt if I could fill out app and that I came in the side door.. The guy proceeded to tell me in a rude tone, I didn't ask, that the door was open because contractors were working in the building and we don't open till 11. So I thought about it and said to myself wow if this is how you guys treat someone walking through your open door then how do you treat your employees and then left wadding up app and leaving it in the side entrance. I then went to the swedish pantry and had a cup of coffee and bought a loaf of bread and thought its after 11 Im going to talk to a manager. So I go back and ask for a manager and it is the same guy in a grey t-shirt that was rude in the 1st place. I said I can see this isn't going to go anywhere but proceeded to ask why I was greeted and treated so rudely? He said you kinda freaked us out.. I was like really I came in as a bright bowl of sunshine all cheery and well dressed in pressed pants, shirt, tie, and dress shoes at 10:47- really?? I then proceeded to ask him if you treat people who walk through your open door like this, how do you treat your employees ? I'm not sure at this point if I would want to work for such people... He got really offensive at this point and said well if you cant handle that situation I don't think you could handle working in our kitchen. I chuckled at him and asked why do you have to be this way- all rude? And I aid I have patronized your business with my family and friends many times, and I don't think i will ever again. I said i came in all cheery that's too bad - have a great day and proceeded to leave. He said on my way out Don't come back... Really? What kind of manager is so rude when i did nothing but come in there with a smile on my face- even in his absolute rudeness I kept my cool and a smile- And that just seemed to piss hm off more... Why would you let some rude, unhappy, undereducated person represent your establishment? I have over 24 yrs cooking in every situation/setting you could imagine under 4 different chefs! Not to mention I'm an electrical engineering technician. You would be fortunate to have someone with my caliber of experience cooking/managing your kitchen. I have never in the service industry encountered such a rude unhappy offensive person! I would like to appeal to the owner of this establishment. I very seriously doubt I / my family, or my friends will patronize your establishment again. It was everything I could do to keep that smile on my face as I left to his gotta have the last word trailer trash statements you have as an acting manager! You should be ashamed and fortunate you have any employees willing to work for such people! Further, the acting manager proceeded to try, and lecture me on when restaurants open in escanaba when I came back to talk to a manager after 11am... He stated "Do you know when restaurants open in escanaba?" He said "11 am- this isn't a breakfast place"... Really? Here's just another problem I had with your low class acting manager trying to lecture a possible patron or applicant.. Why didn't he offer me a seat and say it will be 10 min? why didn't he say sir could you come back in 10 min? no he approached the whole situation, at this time was about 8 min until 11 am., WRONG and rudely. So this is not my situation to deal with as your low class under dressed acting manager stated- He is the one who does not know how to handle situations. He is the one displaying his poor attitude along with his appearance and un-professionalism! You guys owe me an apology for the way this unprofessional idiot exuding attitude spoke to one of your patrons and potential employees. I have the experience and know how with the 24yrs plus under 4 different chefs and the management experience and references to properly execute the duties of his position along with the operation of the entire restaurant- both front and back of house thank you very much. Further more, I am prior service and don't appreciate punks like the one you have power tripping as acting manager- I did however maintain my professionalism throughout where he is incapable!

While on a Road-trip from Seattle to Montreal, we stopped here for lunch. This place might be having a bit of an identity crisis (it's a brewery, with a beach theme, and a mongolian grill, plus a 'cook your own steak' thing that we didn't explore) but the food was great! I had the Tuna tar-tare- be aware, if there's only one person eating this dish, it's a main course! My husband had the hotties, and said they were actually spicy- a huge compliment from him. The service was superb as well. I have a gluten allergy and the chef himself came out and told me how he was going to prep my Ruben (with no bread) to make sure it wasn't contaminated. Overall- would definitely recommend.

Great place here in the U.P. Grill your own steaks is a great treat, and the steak selection is just as great as the beers! Microbrews in a growler for later?! I think so!!

Unimpressed!!! This is supposed to be a steakhouse? How can you cook a steak properly if you can't even cook a burger properly. Wait, you have to pay an add'l $2 to have the "chef" ruin your steak. I Ordered a cheeseburger medium well and came out with literal char on the burger and bone dry. When I told our server Amanda about this she simply stated that they'd had a problem not getting them done enough in the past. No offer to replace. My husband ordered his burger medium rare and not even a hint of pink. For the price & poor level of service, don't waste your time or money.

The food was delicious. Great big monster steaks. Fantastic micro brew. Definitely recommend.

Lunch turned out to be great. We were concerned since the last time several items from the menu were not available and the service was non existent. This time, from the get go, our server was friendly and attentive. I had blackened salmon salad. Fresh greens and salmon was decent size for lunch and the fish had a nice spiciness without being over the top. Our server was Jackie and she stopped back and refilled the ice tea often. Really made up for last time. Night and day difference.

Great ambience , Historical Register Building (1914 Bank), craft beer was great. Cleary Irish Red was a winner for us. Food was poor. You need an Engineering degree to understand menu, and with as many mix ups when our table and others were served, they do not understand it either. Food was unacceptable by anyone in our party of 4. Folks were nice, building clean and comfortable but it is a gamble.

My family of five enjoyed a good lunch today. There's something on the menu to satisfy everyone. I had the sesame crusted tuna with salad bar it was pretty good better than expected , the wife and kids had sandwiches that they enjoyed. The beer I had was a pumpkin ale brewed in house flavor was nice.

Good beef. Had beef three times while in Escanaba. My only complaint is; please don't serve yellow goop and call it Hollandaise. It wasn't even up to Sysco quality. That goop had nothing to do with hollandaise. Good quality beef, good service, the beer was good also.

Amazing! Great service, great ribs, steak, and stir fry...and their beer isn't bad either. Can't wait to come back to Escanaba because we'll be back to Hereford & Hops for more great food.

I came here during a business trip on a weekday winter night with a group of 6 associates from around the U.P., and had a very good experience. Is this the equal of Morton's or Ruth's Chris? No, but the the steaks were decent quality and well-prepared, as were all of the appetizers, salads, and sides. Portions were generous. The prices were modest. The service was friendly and attentive. Full bar and a nice selection of beers. The atmosphere was relaxed, unpretentious and enjoyable, with groups of diners that ranged from blue collar to business attire. The pricing model for steaks is interesting - the dinner costs the same regardless of which cut of meat you select, you just get more of the cheaper cuts and less of the better ones. Either way you choose, it's more than a body needs to be eating unless you spent the day outside chopping wood in shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of winter, especially if you hit the salad and potato bar that come with the meal, scarfed the Texas Toast, and added drinks, appetizers and/or dessert. Also, if you're finicky, adventurous, cheap, or just want to get your caveman on with your buddies, you can save 2 bucks by grilling your own steaks over a huge, brick, charcoal grill set up under a ventilation hood in one of the rooms. If steak isn't your thing, there's an expansive menu of other steakhouse/pub fare available. We had a nice time and would return without hesitation.

Restauran and beer pub ...not great. Beer is good. Food is ordinary and expensive for the area. Service was slow and average kindness. Honestly, for the end price of $20 plus tip, a sandwich and 2 beers I've had better almost everywhere else. Stop in have a brew, skip the food.

My favorite place in town. Love the Mongolian Grille option but my favorite has to be the pizza. My kids actually eat here (always a plus when you have picky toddlers and preschoolers). Best place to be on Thursday nights: pizza special night! Yummy!

We had Stout (dishwater), IPA (bitter, no hop), Highlander (scotch) ale (not bad), Black (blechhh) & Tan, Strawberry Blonde (colors light with no fruit). Not only was the beer bad, but the sourpuss young lady behind the bar had no personality either. Maybe she's had too much of the beer. Oh, and Dr. Oz was on the TV fitting bras to over endowed women, great for a place of mostly guys. My wife was so disgusted she asked sourpuss to put on ESPN. I ate here years ago and didn't like the food. Now I know not to return.

Interesting place to eat - there were various areas you could sit in. Several menus. My husband had Mongolian Barbecue which he liked a lot - lots of choices. I had the Honey Fried Walleye - fresh walleye cooked with a honey sauce also came with salad and potato bar including sweet potatoes which were excellent. Salad bar was typical. Service was very good and friendly, prices were very reasonable and there were craft beers that we both liked.

Mongolian BBQ had a very good selection of proteins and then a great deletion of additional fixings. Also very many sauces to select from. My only complaint is that you could only have one protein. This is a brew pub so nice selection of beer types. I had the stout and it was very good. On the bitter side but I am fine with that. Very friendly server named Donna. Really worked to make us feel welcome and it have a good experience. My wife had the honey fried walleye. Great presentation. Good honey flavor. I also had a glass of Michigan Riesling. Very much like an after dinner drink. Thick and sweet. For $48 , we had two full meals , two beers and a glass of wine.

One of my favorite places to eat. Period.... The fellows that slam the beer, one from Gladstonef, and the other from Phoenix, should stick with Miller Lite and tequila... things they know. The beer has always been excellent when I have eaten here. And the service is much improved. (It is difficult to complain about the chef when you grill your own steak)

Avoid this place at all costs! I'm a yooper who currently lives downstate, and for years I would stop in here on the way home to pick up growlers of beer. Usually, we'd have dinner there as well. That is over. I will never set foot in this place again. In the back, this place has a gambling room of questionable legality (my next visit online will be to the gambling and liquor control commissions websites) where you can, among other things, play a slot machine which pays out in the form of gift certificates for the H&H restaurant. I took my parents here last weekend. My mother, possibly the sweetest person alive, decided to put $5 in the "slot machine" while we waited for our lunch. Immediately after doing so, our food arrived, and my mother cashed out. The "slot machine" printed out a slip of paper much like you'd get at a casino indicating that she had $5 of credits, which is the amount she'd put in moments before. When she asked for the her gift certificate, she was told that the minimum payout for the machine was $10, and anything less than that the restaurant would basically steal from you, so the "credits" were not valid. She then attempted to re-insert the credit slip into the machine, along with another $5, so that the total would be $10 and she could get her money back, and was told by a rude person identifying herself as the owner that she was not allowed to do so. Keep in mind we weren't trying to scam the owner out of money, we were simply looking to refund my mother's unused credits from a machine it appears was DESIGNED to rip people off. The "owner" then went on to use offensive language, insulted my mother' (which made her cry), and stormed out of the building without another word. Several patrons who had seen the confrontational manner of the owner got up and walked out, and from the reaction of the staff, it appeared that the owner's (if she really WAS the owner) poor attitude was a FIXTURE at this establishment. I will tolerate a lot of idiots in this world, but I will not allow someone to insult my mother without feeling the need to comment. Their food is okay, and the beer is too, but unless you're in the mood to be berated by the rude owner of a sleazy establishment, I'd steer clear of Hereford & Hops.

We try and get to H&H when we "go home". We've had good service and really good food. It's a fun place to go in Escanaba.

Had an excellent meal there a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday. Took my wife there last Saturday evening and had one of the worst meals I have experienced in a long time. Has to be pretty bad for me to insist on not paying for a meal (this is only the second time in my life) but this was one. The pork chop was cold and raw in the middle as well as the sauce was quite gross, the mashed potatoes were cold and like "rubber". My wife's chicken was also pretty bad. Perhaps the regular chef was out for the evening? I will say the service was excellent and professional.

I had such high hopes...I was excited to find a brew pub on my work trip to Michigan's UP! I am a horrible cook, but love to experience great food. However, this place had a $20 Chicken Bruschetta Pasta dish that I could have whipped up myself. After the bartender corrected my originally correct pronunciation of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. As for the beer, I recommend staying away from the local brew and choosing the Dark Horse brew they host from Marshall, MI.

H&H is in a historic hotel in downtown Escanaba, which gives it great charm. For the first time in several years, they have an actual chef on staff so the food inconsistencies have disappeared. She's currently developing a new menu, which I'm quite excited to try since their specials have been excellent lately. The service has been spotty in the past, but I haven't had an issue in quite some time. I would probably advise not sitting at one of the three tables by the bar though, because people are often overlooked there if it's busy. Most of the beers are great, although they do have a "miss" here or there. I don't know what Matt M is talking about them "not tasting like they're supposed to". I'm a certified beer judge and the oatmeal stout he's complaining about is a really good example of the style, so I think he's way off base. Great beer and good food - this is one of the few restaurants in Escanaba that I frequent.

Wife and I waited 15 minutes for service. After 3 waiters / waitresses passed us each twice without service or a simple acknowledgement of "someone will be with you shortly", we left. Maybe this place only caters to locals?

I came into Escanaba with low expectations and H&H exceeded therm.

I disagree with Mike S.-- the service was excellent and the food was certainly not average bar fare. If we didn't have a 7 hour drive back to Chicago, we certainly would have stayed longer to enjoy their home brews-- the strawberry blonde ale looked fantastic! My boyfriend and I split a rack of ribs-- they had an apricot chipotle glaze and they were spectacular. Try finding that at TGI Friday's.

Nice historical ambiance on Esky's main street down towards the park. I like the house-brewed IPA a lot. And at $6.95, the garlic sirloin is a great value. About a dozen bites of goodness, with a big baked potato and a salad thrown in. The lettuce was a little wilty, and the server displayed a pretty dramatic mood swing, from warmly inviting to cold and completely inattentive. Otherwise this would have been five stars.

Trying to be too Many Things and not succeeding at anything. Brewpub? Kind of. Beer is brewed here. Yep... everyone is trying to capitalize on craft beers without focusing on the "craft." Food? Sandwiches, burgers, salads, entrees. ALL at a trendy-boutique price (a.k.a. inflated descriptions with inflated prices). My Husband ordered a Whitefish sandwich and I ordered a turkey sandwich, while our Daughter had Sysco chicken strips :(. We got our order. It was wrong. I was given a Chicken breast rubbed in black stuff. Um, no. Sent it back for my sandwich. Husband tried to eat his and then asked me to taste the fish. It was chicken. Seriously? Sent that back. Turkey sandwich came back first. I was excited to try the cranberry mayo... shouldn't have bothered. It was from a squeeze bottle (I saw the item at the local grocery store) and had little taste. The Gouda that was supposed to be on my sandwich - that was just a piece of mozzarella. The fish sandwich was unique: jalapenos helped the sandwich have flavor, but it was seriously lacking for the price. Institutional chicken tenders? Really? The menu suggests vision, but the execution shows lack of sight. When you are going to charge $10 or so for a sandwich, make sure that sandwich is worth it. Here, it is not. Old 80's metal band music was blaring throughout the restaurant - to the point of not being able to speak to whom you are dining with. Is this a Brew Pub? A bar? An upscale place to eat? What the heck? Pick one - and settle on it. Trying to 'hit' all of the trends has made this place suffer an identity crisis. Don't bother trying to eat here.

My husband and I are new to the area and went here for our Valentines Day meal because we love breweries. The beer was awesome and the food was great. Definitely will go here again. We tried a sample platter of all the beers, spinach & artichoke dip (yum!!), husband had Caesar salad with steak, and I had the cedar planked whitefish (so good!) and salad bar.

We actually ate here twice this week! Both times I had the pan-fried walleye. It was delicious! Others in the group had the award winning ribs, sandwiches, burgers, and steak. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The beer is house-brewed and I enjoyed the IPA. Both nights we had very good service with a full table of8-10 folks.

What a terrible waste of a good space this place is. With a complete overhaul of management, it could be a gem. They are truly clueless. On a recent friday-night visit, seven of us sat at a table in the back room. Not once--and I'm not exaggerating--not one single time in two hours did anyone stop by and ask if we needed anything. This was despite employees walking past us many times throughout the night. We had to serve ourselves at the bar in the next room. The place was dead on a Friday night NCAA basketball tournament. No wonder.

This place is often empty unless it's the weekend of a weekend night. The food is mediocre....nothing too exciting but definitely edible. I like their cheese curds and beer cheese soup. They have some great micro brews there which are worth a stop for a beer.

A nice building on a nice part of the street. That's pretty much where the good comes to an end... You would figure that being a brewery, there would be some tasty beers on tap. Not necessarily the case. Even with a promising atmosphere, and giant fermenters on premises that gave the look of a legit brewery, this place fell way short. On a cold day in the UP, a few of us ventured out from our camp near Munising and made the trek down to Escanaba for some beer tasting. We immediately ordered the sampler, and much to our chagrin, found very few beers that fit the style they were aiming for. We also found most of the beer was undrinkable.... The wheat beer was absolutely gross. Smelled nasty, tasted nasty. While I didn't find either the Red or the Stout really that appealing, both my sister and wife enjoyed them with their lunches. I had the IPA, which was good and seemed to me to be the only beer that tasted like it was supposed to. The food was just as bad. I mean, I know what greasy, fried bar food is and this even fell short of that. Again, the sampler was pretty gross. Canned mushrooms and shrimp fried were absolutely disgusting. The chicken fingers and jalapeno poppers were decent. I'd order a plate of the jalapeno poppers again.... The burger was pretty dry and overall, weak. The girls split the Philly cheese steak and were satisfied, but overall, a very unappealing lunch. Even on a future brewery tour of the UP, I would not return to this Escanaba location....

0 stars from me- I have encountered the most condescending, better than thou, undereducated manager in my life there today!

Went here for dinner on Saturday night. We did the grill your own steak and it was quite tasty. The salad bar was lacking for my liking. Texas toast on the grill was good.

We had a wonderful experience here! We arrived 3 minutes prior to closing on Memorial Day weekend and were graciously welcomed and seated. The food was wonderful and was homemade. We recommend it highly!

The manager Scott was very rude when we came in. Not a friendly greeting at any point during our time there. Food was good but it never makes up for unfriendly service.
