I've been there only twice. It's at the corner of my street so I figured cool I can just walk up here when I'm in the mood for well just about anything! Yeah I would definitely rather drive just about any where else.. One time for breakfast and once for a late lunch/early dinner. The coffee was ok, my breakfast was decent, nothing to write home about but another person in my party had to send his back twice and ended up not eating at all...the first time because there was hair in his eggs, the second because after waiting for another 20 minutes it came out cold and by then the rest of us were done eating anyways.... Our lunch experience wasn't much better. I had a chicken dish a fatush salad... the chicken was dry, the garlic dip was eh and the salad was gross. Definitely not worth what I paid. I suppose maybe if you went in to get a simple cheeseburger or something like that it might be ok, but I don't think I will be going back any time soon :-\

I used to be a waitress here when I was a teenager, maybe that's why I love the food :) In all honesty though, the food is good, but one shouldn't expect it to be a 5 star restaurant like the reviewer below. The menu is huge, you have everything under the sun to choose from. Some of the best is the fish and chips, chicken lemon rice soup, greek salad, and the grand pita (which is like a hani from National Coney Island). Those are just my favorites, but my parents who eat there once every two-three weeks could name many more. It's also great for breakfast since you can get a ton of food for a small price. The prices are low, and every meal comes with soup or salad and a side. They give senior discounts and serve breakfast all day every day. I think they are also still open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. You can call ahead and order anything on the menu to pick up as a carry out. The best time to go for dinner is on Fridays during Lent since they have a ton of meatless options, especially different kinds of fish. They also have macaroni and cheese then that is really good. When I worked there the waitstaff was good, but I haven't been there in a year or so since I've moved. And now that you can't smoke in restaurants, I'm sure it's an even better atmosphere. It's not the most appealing restaurant inside, but way better than the loud, obnoxious Coney Island restaurants that are usually full of teenagers. Give it a chance if you live in the area!

There are few meals when I have not left a tip for a server. This is one of them. The waitress came to the table and asked "What do you want?" Plopped the food down and never returned. The food was mediocre at best. Coffee was bitter. No sweeteners on the tables and I had to get my own silverware. Beyond poor service and okay food you can get anywhere. Drive past this restaurant to the next.

Ok......food was good, average, ok....but for atmosphere? blah.. The first side when you come in seems ok, even has a "bar" though I don't think they serve alcohol. but the center of the restaurant....hmmm.....like someone fixed up their basement to be a restaurant? Just old and outdated. Kind of like a Ram's Horn in 1979.

Whenever my grandmother is in town from Tennessee, we take her here. For some reason she loves GD more than any other place around. It took me a while to realize why that is. The tradition had passed down to my parents, and then to me once I tried their fish and chips. Unfortunately I've gotten used to the frozen fish at Coney or Denny's. I was really surprised at how well they did cod at GD - it was so good in fact, that I made a second order and took it home for lunch! They have a variety of foods. Even though they would technically be a "diner", I wouldn't call them a diner. The name just suggests a lack of expertise or tastiness in food. Whenever I think diner, I think of those aforementioned places with frozen foods simply heated up and served to me, or places that need a good cleaning. Grand Dimitre's is none of these. It's very inexpensive. If you find yourself on Gratiot and hungry, give this place a try, or maybe even the cod a try. Don't disappoint my grandmother!

Food was very good. You can tell most, but not all, the stuff is homemade. Wait staff was average, better than worse. Also very inexpensive for the quality of food! Highly recommended unless your like the other reviewer who's used to eating at burger king and the lingerie stores. Weirdo.

My better half and I were driving with hunger beating down our door. We wanted to try something new. We didn't want to become those people that go to the same three restaurants in their area every night. So we drove, just said stop and ate at whatever restaurant was close. I now know we would have found better food at the Burger king or the lingerie store both of which were close by. The restaurant was Grand Dimitre's Family Dining in Eastpointe. Now with Grand in the name you would think it would be well, Grand. Maybe they didn't understand the definition. Or, maybe it was meant to be more of an oxymoron of the senses. We walked in and immediately I smiled, knowing this was going in a rant. The place reeked of old cigarettes. The vestibule alone was filled with a carcinogenic haze wafting from the smoking area. The non smoking area was rough and gritty like a dirty ashtray but not in a hip scenester way. After sitting down, run now or stay and eat kept running through my head. I started to browse the menu. This, I realized, was going to take me a while. The menu was huge. They had everything from Greek style dishes to Middle Eastern style to I drive a Chevy and want an American cow on my plate style dishes. There must have been about a hundred dishes on the menu not counting breakfast. I'm not sure what they were thinking. Maybe it was something like hey if we can't be great at a few things, let's be shitty at everything. So my better half and I chose simple dishes, I had grilled chicken kabobs with some rice and other meaningless garnish. As we waited a long time for what would be soon called the why did we go there dinner, I looked around taking in the atmosphere. It was a basic dive-ish diner with the joke it being unintentional. Some of the wait staff had an unhappy two pack a day look about them. Although in their defense, I think I smoked the equivalent to a few cigarettes just walking into the place. Maybe they're just shoving cartons of cigarettes in the furnace? They were not bad though, attentive and average. After basking in the delightful ambiance, our food arrived. Wow, if food could look depressed this is what it would look like. The damn plate looked as if it committed suicide after a depression filled frenzy. I felt like I should pop a few Prozac just looking at it. It tasted just as sad and bland. It was all dry. How do you screw up grilled chicken? Well, we finished what we could, paid and left as quietly as we arrived. If you were laid off from the plant and the look and taste of the food doesn't matter because the pack a day you smoked for the last 40 years killed your taste buds, this is the place for you. Otherwise, I wouldn't suggest Grand Dimitre's Family Dining.
