This was my first visit to Detroit and I wanted to have some soul food before I left heading back to California. Well, I was extremely happy this restaurant was recommended! The food was excellent and the service was great! the fried chicken was hot, juicy and crispy! I also had the mac n cheese, greens and cornbread. And I can't forget the sweet tea. My waiter Terrance was wonderful! Very attentive, curteous and funny! He never allowed my glass to get empty. Always right there to refill. The portions was extremely large, which forced me to take 1/2 of my meal to go...lunch for tomorrow! I also had the pleasure to converse with one of the kitchen workers Tony while he was on break. Again, friendly, funny and a pleasure to talk with since I was dining alone. When I return to Detroit this will definitely be a restaurant I'll revisit again! I recommend anyone visiting Detroit to stop by and have a meal here. I promise you won't be disappointed! :)

After hearing that defunct Southern Fires had a sister restaurant opened in the area, I immediately order takeout for my family. Pros: Same menu as Southern Fires; shakes (caramel is my fave), ribs, marinated chicken, etc. The waitstaff was friendly, food is competitively priced, and the parking lot parking is free. Cons: Macaroni and cheese was disgusting, the serving sizes were inconsistent, and despite calling the order in, we had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes until our food was ready. All in all, I would give this place another shot in the fall to see if I just caught them on a bad day. I hope that is the case.

Urban Soul really should think about how to retrieve money in other ways besides nickel and diming the customers. First of all there are no refills on beverages. This is problematic. How in the world do you charge 1.95 for pop but don't allow free refills. They should discount the second round. Secondly, they need ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO STAND IN A HUDDLE to actually work. They stand at the entrance complaining about paying customers or what time their shift ends that is a sad welcoming to any restaurant. Thirdly, the bathrooms should be checked on when they have a heavy day. That all I will say on that. Fourthly, for that place to be so big the menu is skimpy. And Last, the customer service is inconsistent. However there is light at the end of the tunnel..... Harry is most sweetest and well mannered server, we have had at this place. He came and checked on us, he came to the table and introduced himself, he smiled, he was so polite. Second, the food was wonderful, my husband and I have had meat loaf, pork chops, greens, dressing, yams, sweet tea, ( the mac and cheese needs help). Otherwise, what we had was good. If you do try them out ask for Harry and the fried Pork chops..... * * *

This place was recommended by a friend the food was too salty for my taste but overall it was okay.. I strongly recommend the peach cobbler or the cheesecake for dessert.. They didn't disappoint there. The waitstaff was nice and courteous. If ever I'm in the D again I would probably give them another try.

Very friendly service, but the food was not impressive. Seems like the macaroni and cheese was not homemade, and the chicken breast was dry and smaller than I expected, not juicy at all. For a soul food place, I expected better. Might return since it's nearby, but not my first choice.

The food doesn't taste the same as it did when it was southern fires , I usually order the same meal , when I got my meal today they served me raw chicken , they had to re-cook it...never again will I eat here , the service is very poor!

Very cool spot. The "catfish" was remarkable. The Mac and cheese and the greens were extremely tasty and didn't suffer from lack of animal additives. Very viable soul food option.

G wanted to try this new soul food restaurant in Detroit, so we ventured to it. It has a nice lounge looking feel about it. It is a soul food restaurant that has all the classics (meatloaf, pork chops, fried chicken, etc). G had the meatloaf with sweet potatoes and turnip greens. I don't care for sweet potatoes, so I can't comment on them. The meatloaf was just ok. The greens were awesome. They were definitely fresh and well seasoned. I had the fried chicken. I ordered the dark, which came with two legs and two thighs. I took one thigh home and discovered it was a breast. The chicken was fried perfectly. I had the mac n' cheese and the cornbread dressing. yes, I had a lot of starches. The mac n' cheese was great and the corn bread dressing was even better. They put a brown gravy on it, which I would have preferred it to have been left off. The corn bread dressing was so good that I ha to give G half so that he didn't have to order his own. Extra sides were $3.69, so not cheap. The meals were around $10, though and each came with two sides. The restaurant is still new, so they do not have sweet tea yet. They also had a list of desserts, so we had to try to carrot cake. This cake was huge. For only $4.99, it could easily serve 2 (maybe even 4). We ate half and took half home. This place is great. I definitely would visit again.

Atmosphere/Location: East side of Detroit. It's not easy to find; it's unassumingly located in a strip mall at the corner of Lafayette and St. Aubin. The inside has the sense of being vastly larger than it needs to be. The paint is an odd "trendy" orange color, and the booths are very big and tall. It unfortunately gives off the vibe that you're in a fast-food-like Chinese place, or a cheap, seedy sandwich place. However, they just opened, so maybe the atmosphere will improve. Service: Was good. Food: Not so great. Fried chicken was sort of tough and overly crispy, and the batter used left something to be desired. I honestly thought KFC or Martin's Supermarket had better fried chicken. Perch was small and very dry. Sweet potatoes were okay, too much sauce, though. Baked beans were the highlight--sweet and a bit spicy. Try that for a side. Ultimately I wouldn't go there again, at least not for a while.

Even though it was slow, waitress was extremely careless. Felt like eating microwaved froZen food. It was not worth it at all.

Heard this was the old "Southern Fires" restaurant in Detroit. Not as roomy as the previous establishment but very clean and spacious. We ordered fried chicken, greens, mac n cheese, yams. All of it was well seasoned and cooked great. Our waitress was knowledgable and service was friendly. If you go on Sundays get there before 1pm. My only gripe is the cornbread was good but a little dry. However i used the butter and syrup to take care of that. A great place for a nice soulfood lunch or dinner. ** Try some peach cobbler if you get a chance!

This place was alright. Server was very friendly and attentive. The food was mediocre. I had fried chicken wings, greens, and dressing. Chicken tasted like it was fried in old oil, not very tasty. The dressing was delicious but I didn't know they would put gravy on it. Next time I would make sure to say no gravy. The greens were incredibly salty. Thank God for the vinegar. My bf had a bbq sauce dipped fried chicken breast, mac and cheese and yams. He loved his food! I did like his Chicken breast. It was deliciously moist. I didn't like the mac & cheese or yams at all. The mac & cheese lacked flavor. My bf isn't normally a soul food eater and he enjoyed his meal. I love soul food and I was not impressed. I prefer Baker's over this any day. Also, no free refills so keep that in mind. The prices were very reasonable though and if I go back I would definitely get the dipped fried chicken breast and dressing. I'm not sure what I would choose as a second side. Also, the cornbread was disgusting.

I hope this restaurant is not the new Southern Fires! I can't give any stars! The first thing I noticed was the outside design that looked like jail bars, a real turn off! The service was slow and the food was horrible! I will not return!

Great food and friendly service. We had the chicken and waffles, pork chops with macaroni and cheese and yams, and perch with greens and yams. Everything was prepared perfectly. Chicken and pork chops were moist and the sides and corn bread were all delicious. And Denise was warm, friendly, and helpful. We recently moved from Southern California and the food compared favorably to even Roscoe's. Only suggestion is to take the sweet tea up a notch - it was not bad but maybe the Urban Soul owners might do some competitive recon and taste-test the sweet tea at Bojangle's Chicken and Biscuits in the South as a benchmark. The chocolate shake was very good, but a little pricey. Great job! It's tough to maintain quality on a daily basis,

I had the pleasure of dining here last Sunday. I ordered the fried chicken with Mac n cheese, yams, dressing and greens. I bought extra sides just to try them. I Also tasted the black eyes peas from my friends plate. She is a vegetarian and ordered the 4 vegetable plate. I am pleased to say everything was delicious. We arrived at 12:45pm at were mediately seated. The establishment was neat, clean and nicely decorated. Our service was good as well. I would definitely go back. I highly recommend .

Food was about 3 stars. Servers were nice but the wait was extremely long especially on a weekday during the lunch hour.

I wanted to go someplace in th community to celebrate my birthday. This was my first time visiting this restaurant and I liked it. Everyone enjoyed their food. Our waiter Calvin made it a memorable evening for us. We will return.

We just finished an excellent dinner consisting of sweet potatoes, collards greens, macaroni and cheese, baked chicken, and meatloaf. Everything was simply delicious. The prices were very reasonable. We would highly recommend it. Our waitress, Denise, gave us Great service.

review is based on my mom's opinion and what I saw and the little i tasted. my mom wanted soul food from a particular place but that was closed so my aunt took us here. i didn't want anything was surprised at the prices of the sides...$3.65. I was expecting a nice size portion for that price but was disappointed that it was standard portion size. my mom got the baked chicken ($10.95 and states: half a chicken marinated overnight, then rotisseried), green beans, black eyed peas, and cornbread. per my mom: " can tell the bepeas are canned just from the smell. they didn't add any seasoning or anything to it." as the lid came off the green beans, I knew they were canned because they were limp, limp, limp, and a faded green color. per my mom: "these ain't fresh. these are canned too. they sat all day. they overcooked them" the chicken was a true half chicken and the spices are evident. looked marinated for sure. I knew right away that it was dry, there was no moisture or juice in the plate nor on the wax paper the chicken was wrapped in. per my mom: "tastes good but it's dry. imma just put this in with the (green) beans." I tasted the cornbread. dry and the texture was mealy/flaky as if it was sitting too long and NO butter was added in the middle. that was added to the bepeas. there was cranberry sauce (canned jellied of course) and I ate that. that was good. my mother would not go back again and that was even based on her food being free (my aunt paid for it). I wouldn't go to try just due to the fact that the sides were canned which would indicate everything else is as well. soul food DOES NOT come from a can. the portions are not worth the price. per my mom: 'the food I just had I could have cooked it myself with my own seasonings. it's gotta have a special something to make me go to your restaurant when I could have cooked it better. and the portions are too small for $3.65. it's obvious that the food came from a can. I know canned foods, I know what they look like and smell like. and that was before I even tasted it. it isn't homemade. that food didn't have a homey warm feeling. it had a canned feeling. you have to remember, mamas and grandmamas and daddies too been cooking for years and know soul food" will add that MAYBE because we got there a little after 8p and they close at nine the food wasn't as spectacular as it COULD have been...maybe?? OH! and who the heck puts cornmeal on salmon? salmon doesn't need a batter on it. it's. salmon. leave the skin on, broil it, grill it or sauté it but dang it, don't coat it with cornmeal! smh I was just shocked when I read that on the menu. what??

Very disappointed. Fried pork chops were dried out as if they were cooked the day before. Chicken was good and hot. Sides; Mac&Cheese, Greens, Candied Yams, and Potatoe Salad were okay, (a lot better when cooked at Southern Friers). Don't even bother with ordering the Butter Pecan chocolate cake.. it was 4$ and you only got a piece of cake you could dam near read the paper through. Probably will not return. I will most likely stick with going to my favorite place, Motor City Soul Food (either location).

So they finally opened and I couldn't wait to give them a try. I was craving red meat so I got the chicken fried steak with yams, mac and cheese, dressing w/gravy, and greens (whew :-)) Everything was good. The steak was well seasoned and tender, gravy was good. Yams were perfect and sweet like pie. Dressing good. Mac and cheese was OK, kind of mushy. The greens were exceptionally delicious. I ordered extra cornbread, but I was so into the food that I didn't realize that I didn't get any. On a future visit I tried the marble cake with butter pecan buttercream and ice cream. The description sold me but it was not impressive. The cake looked like a little packaged cake, buttercream was more like a thin icing. Vanilla ice cream had no flavor. Overall the food was good. I will return to try something different. UPDATE: Peach cobbler was delicious. I had to request more sauce though. I usually don't eat all of the peaches, but the peaches were soft and sweet, ate every drop.UPDATE: I took off a star. Greens were gritty and not flavorful. This is unfortunate because I raved about them the first time. Consistency please. UPDATE: Very long weave hair in the dressing, gross. Have not been back since. Took off a star.

I just called this place four times, twice it went to an answering service, and once they answered and left me hanging with dead air. I gave them one final shot and on the fourth call the phone was answered with "Urban Soul We're closed!" This is at 7:58 pm. Update your hours if they have changed, or keep consistent hours if that is the issue. I don't know what their food tastes like, and don't know if I ever will at this point.

I ordered a 2 piece fried catfish dinner to go. Got home and found 1 1/2 pieces. The 1/2 piece was skimpy and mostly skin. Wasn't happy about that. It would have been nice if I would have received 2 decent (at least) size pieces like I paid for. Otherwise, the food was good.

Needed to get something to eat while visiting my mom in the hospital. We decided to give them a shot and I was pleasantly pleased. The food was good the grilled chicken breast and pork chops were tender the sides were good and plentiful and the carrot cake was spot on. The only thing I would say is there was no presentation. But to their defense I ordered carry out. I would defiantly eat here again.
