Best fried fish I have ever had. Fluffy and light batter. It was amazing. If you like fish and chips you need to go here. I am going back to try some frog legs. It is cash only. The neighborhood isnt the nicest looking but we had no issues parking and feeling safe. Friend has been going there for years and never had any issues.

Easily the best fish and chips in the northwest area. It is really straightforward with nothing fancy, but it is fantastic. I got 3 pieces of cod (larger than average) fries and a roll for $10 flat. The food was ready in 10 minutes on the dot and I was able to park, get inside, pay and leave in under two minutes. The fries are nothing special, but they aren't bad. The roll is pretty standard as well, but you go to Scotty's for the fish. As mentioned a million times before they ONLY TAKE CASH!

Scotty Simpson, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... First off, I don't normally like fish and chips, I had my arm twisted into eating here one night. Most places you get them from they are soggy and greasy, and taste like old fry oil. Not Scotty Simpsons! The fish is fresh, firm and flaky, and the battered coating is nice and crisp, with a flavor that just can't be explained. The servings are generous, and come with a side of delicious fries. Their home made clam chowder is a treat, I get a bowl with dinner every time I visit. Scotty Simpson's singlehandedly turned me into a fish and chips fan, but only if they make it!

Let's not mince words! THE BEST FISH & CHIPS IN METRO-DETROIT. My mom get the fish and I get the chicken & chips. They are DEEP FRY WIZARDS HERE! Classic beer batter, good quality cod, and great chicken. All hand-battered. Nothing frozen here. Be aware it is in a sketchy part of town, but this is an oasis that everybody comes to. The place is a dump inside, and probably has not been painted in 30 years. But that all is part of the charm of this hidden gem. Also. Be aware. They are CASH ONLY and there are no ATM's immediately nearby. BRING CASH.

I came in here with a group of a dozen or so other Yelper's and had a great experience. It's a quaint and welcoming environment inside, the staff could not have been any nicer or more helpful, and the food was really good too (the most important part, obviously). This was probably the best lightly breaded Fish & Chips I've ever had. My preference is for the more heavily beaded beer batter stuff, all thick crunchy beading and flaky fish. But this stuff was really really good. Just a thin coating of crispy batter with perfectly cooked fish inside, not at all oily. The fries (chips) were arguably the star of the show. Pretty much the perfect fries for Fish & Chips. Seemed fresh cut, some skin still on, cooked to a point where you experienced multiple textures per bite. They held up great to the generous dousing of malt vinegar I applied. I will be dreaming of these fries tonight. I also really enjoyed the tartar sauce. Thought the onion rings were pretty tasty (though one again I prefer the thick beer battered variety). The only part of my meal that I didn't care much for was the cole slaw. Not to say I didn't eat it all. I absolutely did. But I'm fairly picky about cole slaw and this slaw didn't have that wow factor I look for. No big deal though, with everything else being as good as it was. I'd like to come back and try the perch, which a fellow Yelper said was very good, better than the standard fish even. And I'd like to try the desserts as well. Will definitely be back. Don't let the neighborhood deter you. It's really not so bad. And oh yeah... Cash Only!

Now this is a Detroit institution! For over 60 years, Scotty's has been cranking out hand-dipped, fresh cod on Detroit's west side. Fish comes out flakey and crunchy with their signature batter with just the right amount of grease. After all, it is fried fish and chips. Hands down, one of the best year-round restaurants to get a fried fish dinner. The fresh cod, never frozen, makes all the difference in both taste and texture. The menu stay simple, mainly seafood based, with fish varieties, shrimp, frog legs, and smelt but also offers chicken, steak and even burgers. Get the fries if you want but baked potatoes are always an option. Skip the spud altogether and GET THE ONION RINGS!!! Save room and get a piece of homemade pie. Service here has always been great. It's family owned and operated and the wait staff has been here for years. Be nice to these fine people because during the Lent, this place gets slammed for 4-5 hours a night and particularly on Fridays. They do a great job of pacing your meal so you don't feel rushed but keep in mind there is "no camping allowed." There is a line and they look to move it. Fear not, I've been 25 people deep in the line and waited no more than 30 minutes. At Scotty's, do not let the line deter you. It's worth the wait--I promise. As for the decor, well, it's not exactly modern. In fact, it's not just old school but just downright old. Who cares? It's clean for an old girl and besides, you're here for the food. Scotty Simpson's is a family favorite of ours and should be on your Top 10 Real Detroit Restaurant list.

Best Fish and Chips in SouthEast Michigan. Maybe the best in the State. The food is a little pricey but for a treat this is the best thing next to a million dollar shopping spree. Really it is. The portions are huge, You get 2 big pieces of fish as well as a little piece and a large helping of HOMeMADe fries to go with the crunchiest tastiest fish batter. A nice helping of the coleslaw, which is the drier kind not the creamy lose goopy kind you get from everywhere else. Two people could share one Fish and Chip dinner from Scottys (what us regulars call it) for around a $12.00 and will walk out full. I promise for the extra cash this is definitely worth it And my grandma would recommend their Clam Chowder and lemon meringue pie as well.
(5)Ken S.
What a great spot! Fish was super good and the onion rings were just delicious. Decided to try some of the house made pie for dessert. It was definitely the right move! Unfortunately, they are cash or check only and I had to run down the road to get money to pay for the meal.
(5)Mike M.
Had lunch there today. It was noon and it was me, 4 cops and one other person eating there. I tried the fish and chips. The cod was good and with fries presented an excellent value for the price. I wanted to try their clam chowder which was only $2.40 for a bowl but they were out of it. This old style restaurant is a little drab and back home we would call it a hole in the wall type of place. However places like that also can have some of the best food. I can see why this place has been in business for a long time. They serve good food at low prices. My table service was good. Eat here!!!
(4)William C.
I don't have much to add because it's already been said. Superb. First visit the other day. I had the fish and chips super nice service. I felt like I was at my grandmother's house. Our server was so nice. I presume the owner ( the chef as well ) came by the table and checked in with us. He was very nice to my son. everybody there was so genuine and nice. My mother and grandmother were from Liverpool England. I am a scouser in a long line of fish and chip eaters. It's in my DNA to appreciate this food. The last time I had a chip this good, it was made by my grandmother some 40 years ago. This fish was better. I've eaten fish and chips all over the world, and all over the UK. Never had a better piece of fried cod. ( sorry gran) The chip brought back memories. I took my 4 year old son with me. He never met my mother or my grandmother but I felt proud for him to eat this food. it was a bit of them in every bite. My son loved the chips ( he reminded me that they were in fact French fries, however) this place is a treasure. I found the neighborhood to be just fine. I know the Brightmoor area gets a bad rap. There was plenty of parking, including a nice lot across the street. So for all the people way out in the burbs, go on down and enjoy spectacular food served by wonderful people.
(5)Lee M.
I found this place based off someone else's yelp review. It was exactly as described great fish and chips everything is homemade and they have been in business for over 65 years in the same location. The staff seems like they are family and of work there or own it for many years. If you are a foodie like me and like trying mom-and-pop hole in the wall places with great food this is for you. I will mention the one drawback is the neighborhood is a little rough. But as we all know some of the best mom-and-pop places that I've been around for years are not always in the greatest locations. I recommend going in the afternoon as it gets busy after 5 PM and closes at seven or eight
(5)Michael R.
I cannot eat fish anywhere else. This place has got to have the best fish anywhere. It is awesome. If you love fish you have to try it and you will love it.
(5)Aron B.
In all of my life, I've never eaten fish and chips as good as what they have at Scotty Simpson's. I'm almost 42, and I've eaten at many different F&C places (many even considered "institutions" in the area), and this one basically saved the dish for me. The fish just can't be denied. It's so wonderful. It's light, flaky, fresh...it's wonderful all on its own. Once you throw in their house-made tartar sauce, there's nothing better, period. I normally *despise* tartar sauce, and I ask for extras of this stuff. It's so delicious, I could probably mainline it. The chips I ask for well done, and it usually serves me well to do so. While the potatoes are more filling, in my opinion the better choice to go with are the onion rings, which are nothing less than the *best* in the area, with Redcoat Tavern's coming in at a very close second. Ethereal. I also deeply love their coleslaw, which I ask to receive first, rather than on my plate with the rest of the fried food. This allows me to enjoy the non-mayo based coleslaw in all of its glory, which is just fine by me! Usually, I'll get seconds on coleslaw, I like it that much. For certain, though: get the coleslaw on the side so as to maintain the integrity of the fried foods on the plate. It's a wise move. I even love the rolls they serve, from DiMaggio's Italian Bakery a couple of miles away. The roll may not change your life, but it's plenty fine for me. Come Thanksgiving, these are my choice for leftover turkey sandwiches. No one's going to tell you that the neighborhood is wonderful, but don't worry about it if you're coming during the day, or on the weekend nights...they've got a guy watching the cars, and you can't live in fear. The facility itself has, indeed, seen better days. It's certainly not the hipsteriffic destination of anyplace in Corktown or anything, but Harry and his staff do a bang-up job with what they have. It's clean, the food is the best, and they do everything besides those rolls in-house. If they have Frostie ginger beer, *absolutely* get some with your F&C! If all they have is the ginger beer with the ginseng...*PASS* on it. That stuff is terrible. It's been around well over 60 years now...and it's only had three owners in all of that time. Harry, the current owner, has been there since he was *16*. The love he has for what he does, shows. When you're the best at what you do, it shows.
(5)Mike G.
Had a very good fried perch dinner that was very reasonably priced. The batter is a thick one, which yields a "puffy" kind of perch, but it's a good one, as is the accompanying cole slaw. The French fries are superlative, and remind you what a difference using fresh potatoes makes. Service was prompt and friendly and the owner and I had a nice chat when it came time to settle the bill. In all, an experience worth repeating!
(4)Bob N.
None better or fresher since the 50's. Fresh cod, great cole slaw really good fries. It's in a dicey neighborhood but well worth it once you've tried Scottys you'll be disappointed in everyone elses f/chips. omg can't wait to go back.
(5)R S.
Great old skool fried fish, shrimp etc. I love an unpretentious place that just focuses on great food!
(5)Brittiany R.
I saw an article about Scotty Simpson's where the author stated that THIS is what Detroit is all about and Bourdain should have stopped here when filming his Detroit edition of Parts Unknown. Since Groupon was offering a $5 for $10 coupon, I thought I might as well try it on behalf of my fantasy best friend :) This place has been around forever! Other than knockout food and friendly service, I can't imagine why. You have to go through the hood to get here but the parking and restaurant are well-kept albeit old and outdated. For some, its a walk down memory lane and for others, you'll be locking your doors even though you're in a moving vehicle. The staff was friendly and this is definitely a family owned and operated restaurant. The fish and chips were excellent! Super crispy batter with tender fish on the inside. The fries tasted pretty good, too! I agree that this place is Detroit. A longstanding institution that has managed to provide good food despite the demise of the surrounding neighborhood speaks volumes about the resilience of the owners and the quality of their small, reasonably priced fish and chips.
(4)christopher w.
Back today, still the best in Detroit. Nice guard in the parking lot, although probably unnecessary. Take a drive around the ruins of Brightmoor afterward. Sad.
(5)Craig S.
TWO THUMBS UP !!!!! Went there the other day with some co-workers because we saw the deal on Groupon and saw great reviews on Yelp so we figured we would give it a try. We were all very happy and will be back : ) The place has been there a long time (you can tell by the décor, but it also adds a laidback nice feel). It is a no frills place, but good basic good tasting home cooking. I think they guy making the food was the owner, and he give off a feel like the guy at the sandwich place Ernie's Market...friendly old school bonus. Here is the lowdown... Fish and Chips...fresh and made right in front of you : ) not frozen !!!! onion rings...tasty coleslaw...homemade tartar sauce...homemade paying... cash only clam chowder ...sooooo awesome !!!! I will come back just for that !!!!!
(5)R F.
Yum. Yum. Yum. Would have been 5 stars but didn't realize had to order coleslaw as a side. Thanks for doing what you do.
(4)Jessie G.
This is one of my favorite fish spots in detroit. Always fresh and quick. The decor is rustic but unique in it's own little way. The coleslaw is not the best. Fresh but dry soooo...yea. Also even though the staff is super friendly the register is as old as the building so please count your tab because the staff will charge you what register reads. Try a ginger beer and dine in prices and portions differ from take out. Enjoy.
(3)Karl G.
You got to be kidding me ... is this some kind of evil conspiracy with all the 4 & 5-star ratings to get people to make a pilgrimage to Brightmoor? Back in the day, this was one of the places to go for fish & chips (along with Milroy's), but it's nothing like it used to be, IMO. The smell of burning fryer grease/oil long overdue for a change assaults your nostrils upon entering. $4 for an extra piece of fish with dinner? Really? The décor and furniture scream for an update, any kind of an update, and it's a stretch to even say you're "slumming". I know it's hard to find a good fish & chips out there, but come on! Giving this place a 4-5 star review is just shilling for the business in all honesty. It's Detroit, so the neighborhood is what it is, deal with it or stay home, but no way in hell is it worth the drive (or the hype) ... unless you got something nostalgic going on for overpriced, overcooked/fried, mediocre food. 2pts on a 'street cred' scale of 1-5 for those of you who like to talk about 'braving the city' at parties, ;). JMHO.
(2)Daniel X.
The fish itself is pretty friggin' awesome. No complaints, including the prices. Only four stars because there is something a little bit weird / distracting about their house-made tartar sauce. It nearly ruins the dish. As a testament to the quality of the fish, though, I'd still go back--I'd just bring my own sauce.
(4)Daniel S.
The best in Michigan hands down I would punch a baby for some Scotty's Fish And Chips!
(5)Nunya B.
This is actually my second time at Scotty's. The first time was a groupon that my mother purchased, the second out on a limb. I am not a fan of fish... At all. The cod was incredible. Even though I got it to go, any sogginess was unnoticeable. It was crisp, flavorful, and flaky. The tartar sauce was also much better this time around and complimented the cod a great deal. The shrimp was also simply fantastic. Batter clung to the shrimp and stayed crisp. The chips are delicious too. They're not McDonalds, but good in their own way. I will be visiting again.
(4)Charles S.
Great fish and chips in a classic venue. Definitely worth going out of your way. Tartar sauce and chips also great. Clam chowder a bit light on clams and needed some seasoning. And I prefer a livelier cole slaw. But go for the fish and chips!
(4)Harry H.
After reading Molly Abraham's glowing review a few years back, I decided to give Scotty's a try. I got the fish and chips for takeout. It was good, but not amazing. After another soggy takeout try, I finally decided to visit the restaurant with the family. Thank God I did. When the fish and chips are fresh, there is very little to compare it to. Maybe that place with the fried halibut in a neighborhood in Victoria, BC, but I still think Scotty's is better. My favorites are the perch and the onion rings. My young daughter's favorite is the clam chowder and the rolls. And are the servings too small? I'm a big guy and I've never had room to try a slice of their lauded pies. I'm just too full. Some other reviews have commented on the greasiness of the food, and I'll admit that once in the dozen or so times I visited my fish was greasy. It seems to have been a too cool fryer temperature problem. Luckily this is an exception and not the rule. The decor is well lived-in early 60s fisherman's basement kitsch. And I like it. Scotty's neighborhood? It's Brightmoor. Probably the only good thing I've seen former Mayor Kwame do is improve the area a bit. It was worse before. If you're a Nervous Nellie, then please stay away and don't color a review poorly because of your paranoid feelings. BTW, a cook there told me that if you get takeout, crisp the fish up in your oven at home before eating. There's not a whole lot you can do about the fries, though. Long Live Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips! It's almost 65 years old. And Harry Barber, please don't change a thing.
(4)Kat D.
A Detroit institution. Best fish & chips in town. I have been eating here for 50 years & you will find no better. Harry makes everything from scratch, & you can watch your meal being prepared right in front of you. You are greeted when you walk in, & treated like family. They have a guy watching the parking lot to make sure both you & your car are safe. Great portions. You will not leave here hungry, & will be looking forward to your next visit.

Does anyone out there in yelp land remember Hope's Fish and Chips in Livonia, MI? It closed some 10 years ago and I thought I'd never get to have something as enjoyable as their fish ever again. I was a third-generation patron in my family and absolutely devastated when they closed for good. But you know what? THERE'S SCOTTY'S! And you know what? It's better than Hope's was, especially toward the end of their run. (And part of my love for Hope's is probably mostly nostalgic.) Some things you should know: 1. If you don't like greasy food, skip it (but you'll be sorry, ya jerks!) 2. This place is CASH ONLY. Bring some dough! 3. This is hands-down the best fish and chips joint around. 4. Skip on the tartar sauce, folks. The cocktail sauce is where it's at! I'm serious. Try it with your fish. You won't be sorry. The fish is FRESH, cooked perfectly, and moist and flaky. The batter is addictive and crispy. The onion rings are coated in the same fish batter and are awesome! The fries? Ask for them well done (just a tip). The slaw is unconventional but is the perfect fresh accompaniment to the fried fish. The clam chowder also rocks (especially if you want to dunk your roll in it!) and the service is kind, welcoming, and efficient. Yeah, so it's in Brightmoor. Whatevs. There's ample parking, it's secure-feeling, and it's well worth the drive. Frankly put, if this place closes, EVER, I don't know what I'd do (aside from go crazy and try my damndest to get the recipe for the fish batter!) (Although seriously, guys, I wouldn't mind having that now.)
(5)Shunda B.
Groupon will get you out to try new things... this is how i came about this place. The place is definietly not a fancy location and the look of building would maybe make you question it a little. I will say this is "mom/pop" diner - it was cute as i was walking in, a younger waitress was telling the owner (i believe) about Groupon how it brings new people; i smiled and said that's why i'm here. They were pleased to know they are getting now customers. Even though i took my food to go i notice the seating seemed a little tight and they had an old junkbox on the side. Maybe if they updated a little and opened up the floor a little more, then it would be bring more people to want to dine with larger groups. I ordered a fish/chip - not sure if i was just sensitive to seasoning but the batter seemed to be salty but of course i still ate it all and plus i don't waste especially when it's my money. Happy Eating!
(3)David C.
They could have stopped with doing just the best fish fry ever. But they didn't. Everything is made in house. Hand cut fries. Best coleslaw ever. They even have homemade desserts. I won't be going anywhere else for a fish fry!
(5)Alex Z.
Best fish and chips in town. I have only had the cod, but my brother raved about their perch. The fish, the fries, the coleslaw and the tartar sauce are all home made. The decor has not changed since the 50s and I love that. Cash only. Bring a twenty to cover the tip and the ginger beer (the best soda/pop to drink with fried fish). This place is the real deal.
(5)Lisa E.
Scotty Simpson's is the best! The fish is crispy, perfectly cooked, not greasy, just right. Delicious. Closed June 21 thru July 6, 2015.
(5)Alex K.
Very good ol' boy esque. No salads here! Fish and chips is the way to go. Their shrimp and fish combo is great. The shrimp is lightly breaded, as well as the fish. There is no grease left on the plate, which makes this place fantastic. It isn't overly fried! Wouldn't head to this neighborhood past 5pm though.
(4)Rashida O.
Great fish! Very nice and the customer service was great! Would definitely recommend.
(5)Lynden G.
Returned after being @ Cobo for an expo and had the same service I love. When they know your food order before you get the chance to say anything, you're in the right place. To everyone at Scotty's: WE LOVE YOU!
(5)Amy P.
Yum! What a great place. I was skeptical I must admit as the surrounding area does not seem completely safe, but in the light of day and parking close by, I didn't feel unsafe. The place is awesome on the inside. I perfectly preserved relic. The pictures on the wall and the jukebox in the corner made me sad as I tried to think of this place 40 years prior. you can see the cooking area from the seating area, and you get an even better view on your way to the bathroom, as you have to pass right through kitchen to get there. I was surprised to see a huge tub of soaking fries in the back area which were definitely much preferred over a frozen variety. Before dinner you get a nice white roll which is average. Dinner itself is great! I myself ordered the chicken, but had a sample of my Dads fish which I much preferred. It was soft and flaky and just melted in your mouth. The batter was flavorful, soft and not at all doughy or tough. The fries were absolutely awesome. I loved them and found them addicting. So perfectly crispy on the outside. The cole slaw was different, and perhaps my least favorite part of the meal. All in all a legend and definitely worth a return visit. Glad my brother took us here!

My fiancé grew up in Brightmore around the corner from Scotty's, and talked me into trying their fish and chips for take out one night. Scotty's is one of those old neighborhood joints in Detroit that has managed to hold on, despite the neighborhood around it deteriorating (sadly). Scotty's has managed to stay in business because Scotty's does fish and chips right. The fish is moist and flaky with a fluffy, crunchy batter. It is fried to order, and comes with coleslaw, fries, and a roll on the side. and their tartar sauce is sooo goooooood. So if you order it to-go, you will literally get your food loaded up on a styrofoam plate, wrapped in a paper napkin, stacked, and shoved in a paper bag. During your ride, your fish will get limp and soggy. Take it from me. Eat in, enjoy the colorful clientele (old ladies, neighborhood folks, biker dudes from the clubhouse down the road, etc.), and savor your old school fish and chips. For you suburbanites, don't let the neighborhood deter you. I don't mean that in any judgmental way- just give Scotty's a try, and you will keep coming back.
(5)Sam G.
Went there after I saw the television reviews. The fish and chips were decent but not the best I've had; but I lived in Scotland for three years and they have the best fish and chips on the planet. Fresh-cut fries were fantastic along with the homemade coleslaw and tartar sauce. The fish is where they fall a little bit short. It was cut too thin and as a result, was slightly mushy not firm. Overall, a good neighborhood joint to visit.
(3)Meg G.
I am thinking of paying 200 bucks to get back home for Scottys Fish and Chips. I have tried...to find better...Irish Pubs, English pubs, Just tried another one in Florida today. Not even close. The last time I was there I thought my friends ate my fish while I was was looking at the owner. I had no idea I could devour food that fast. Keeping in real and not changing....restaurant owners should follow this formula. I have been eating there since 1970 something and have never been disappointed. I have had a crush on the owner for over 40 years...His white apron...very sexy arms...You gotta love the man who makes the fish!

Due to Summer road construction projects my commute to work has taken me by Scotty's the last several months. I grew up in Dearborn during the era when Brown's Fish & Chips was THE place to go for deep-fried goodness and passing Scotty's five times a week brought back those tasty memories. So yesterday the wife called to say she'd be home late and I decided it was a perfect time to stop for some take-out. I ordered two regular dinners; the waitress was friendly as I waited for my order to be cooked. As she recommended, I put the food in a warm oven until wifey got home (about 30 mins). When she did, I went in the garage to greet her and she said, "Something's dead in the garage." Seriously, she did. When she walked in the house she asked me what smelled so bad and I told her it was the fish 'n chips warming in the oven. She refused to try it but I did. I managed to eat a small portion of the fish, but it smelled too bad to finish it. I actually put everything in a bag and took it out to the trash so our home would not be permeated with the bad fish smell. Freshly fried fish 'n chips is one of the most appetizing smells I know, so I'm not sure what went wrong. My guess is that it wasn't old fish but OLD cooking oil. In closing, I was really looking forward to enjoying the food from Scotty's, I like patronizing local businesses but this was some awful fried fish.
(1)Scott W.
First time here but I grew up not far from here. Wish I knew about this place years ago. Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. The batter is great and fish perfectly done. My partner had the grilled fish and he raved about that as well. The coleslaw is drier than most and had a great flavor. A side of coleslaw is like 70 cents. What a bargain. The pies are all home made as well and about $2.50 a slice. The only thing I think could be improved on is the size of the pieces of fish. They could be a little bigger or more of them. A 3 piece dinner is $11. Parking is a little tight with some of it on the street. We went on a Friday night during lent and they were very busy but no wait to get in.
(4)De Vaughn E.
Great Spot to have fish and chips!!!!! The had onion rings for us on this visit. That was a tasty bonus! Will definitely be back!
(5)Sue K.
Really, really good. Our server was fantastic. We went on Good Friday which turns out to be their busiest day of the year. The fish and chips was excellent, however, watching the staff "enjoy" the challenge of a packed restaurant was so much fun to watch. Very entertaining!!!
(5)Sarah G.
Scotty's is simply the best. The fish is light and flaky. The onion rings are out of this world. Make sure you get your delicious cole slaw on the side so it doesn't get your fried food soggy. The neighborhood is shady and the building is a bit run down, but that only adds to the experience of reading in a Detroit institution like this. Visit during the day our on weekends when they have parking security. The authenticity seeps from every pore.
(5)Mike P.
Fish was great just remember cash only. They gave me tartar and slaw on the house because I didn't have enough. Will pay them back next time and their will be a next time
(5)Evie B.
For classic, old school fish and chips, this is the place to go! So sad that Hope's closed down and we didn't want to do the church fish dinner, so I looked on Yelp and as always Yelp didn't let me down. To the point, nice pieces of fresh cod, battered, and fried. Yes, when it's busy, it will be a lil soggy (as ours was) and greasy, but I still enjoyed it. We also had some shrimp..YUM I would like bigger shrimp with less batter, but still delish. Homemade tartar and I think the shrimp sauce is also homemade. Both were very good. I didn't care for the fries (really just a second thought..) or the coleslaw (like mine creamy and not so fine), but I didn't go there for those things : ) The ambiance and the character, combined with the quality, the service I can't help but give this place a 5. Lets not let another mom/pop place close. I will return, next winter (non-lent) : )

Returned for wonderful fish and chips ( cod) as good as before - more fries this time. Arrived at 8pm on Saturday. Was able to get the chowder- after all the complements my friends had given it - Price was great - taste was disappointing $2 for a cup $2.40 for a bowel - a cup would have been enough. On the bland side. Its made from scratch each week so it may vary with each batch. Its interesting I have fish and chips elsewhere and feel a greasy and heavy feeling in my stomach -NOT HERE. Light and fresh. The peach - I think is ocean perch - not exciting - stick with the cod. Try the shrimp it was wonderful. Thr onion rings were good also - until they got cold so eat them quickly. Would I return - yes again and again and I will bring friends. Be aware. They are CASH ONLY - I forgot that but luckily we had enough cash to cover the meals.

Still 5 stars! I got just the fish and a side of onion rings. Ah-maz-ing!!! Also ordered a orange cream Stewart's soda to wash it down. Even wore my fat pants aka my yoga pants. More the less this means I stuffed my face, and I enjoyed every dang minute.

That fish is some flaky goodness!! Tried it for the first time the other day and Im impressed, the owner is the sweetest! This is most definitely a spot to try.
(5)Mark Z.
What a gem. Hands down the best fish & chips I've ever had. Perfection at its best. The tartar sauce, cole slaw dynamite. Another thing I liked about this place, is that the fact its been here over 60 years and it doesn't look like its ever been remodeled, its like going in a time warp. I also have to say the service was outstanding, the waitress either had red or brown here and was really good at her job. The owner is super nice also. I love places like this where the food is good, service is good, and the owner is super nice and you have a good experience when you leave the restaurant.

Let's be real clear here, people, about what Scotty Simpson's is and isn't. It isn't in a great neighborhood. In fact, the neighborhood sucks. It also isn't much to look at. I'm pretty sure not much has changed in 40 years. I particularly enjoy the wood paneling and the mounted fish hanging on the wall. The carpeting literally had holes in it before they replaced it. But what Scotty Simpson's is is the best fish and chips in town. Flaky, crispy, delicious. Vinegar on the table for the fries, exactly as the good Lord intended. I'm not a fan of tartar sauce, but this is homemade. Ditto for the coleslaw. They also serve the dinner with a massive dinner roll, but why waste perfectly good stomach real estate on rollzilla? Don't be a heathen and order chicken or hamburgers. It's kinda like asking for the Catholic section of the synagogue.
(5)Luke F.
The BEST fish and chips around. If you are reading this you now know what to order.
(5)Bruce K.
its ok fried fish and chips, dive with heavy grease , let's face its a dump . it has history and many visit because of it
(3)Amy N.
the best fish and chips i have ever tried! the onion rings is the best in the world! and plus the service is super nice!!
(5)Michigan H.
What a gem. Excellent fish and chips, the best I've ever had. Fresh, golden brown, crispy, moist and delicious. Homemade tartar sauce and coleslaw. Fries are great, too. Warm and friendly staff, too. Very homey. Will return for sure.
(5)Clark G.
Scotty Simpson, will you marry me? Only say "yes" if you will cater our big event with your amazing, out-of-this-world fried fish. I await your response.

Here's another one of these gems in a neighborhood where few dare to go. For all the warning about the area, I found it to be pretty innocuous. Scotty Simpson's looks like a throwback to the 60's The wood paneled walls remind me of my family's basement. I thought that Scotty's was somewhat pricey, but at least they're a place that turns a profit and can stay open. Everything that I at was light, not greasy and heavy. The fish had a slightly crispy shell which covered the tender, succulent flavor. Nothing special, just good, like I ate many years before. The french fries and onion rings are awesome; the fries perfectly golden and onion rings that just melt in your mouth. Even the coleslaw was good, and best of all it wasn't buried in a heavy bath of Mayo. Next time I'm in the mood for some fried fish, I'll make sure that I get back to Scotty Simpson's for some very good fish and chips.

Definitely been in the area to pick up dead bodies. It's hard to believe that people still live here ... and a business that isn't a gas station is still open! It's in a part of Detroit that I didn't even think was apart of Detroit ... that's how far away it is. All I remember is I wanted cod and I wanted it FRIED. I went in expecting one thing and got another. It was Whiteyville, MI with a purple hair transplant (don't forget the babushkas!). I love me a good fry place. I want something crispy, with a juicy tender fish on the inside, encased in a medium thick perfect crust. And they HAD this... but it ended up being soggy. The problem is actually transportation of the goods. This is a strictly eat IN establishment to maximize tastiness. But I felt really uncomfortable here, because ALL eyes were on Vman... and not in the usual dopey curious look, but the "GTFO my joint" look. So we caught the vibe and got a to-go. I could even feel the cashier's unease when he rang up our to go order with the Vman in his presence. The onion rings are thin stringy kind -- and homemade. Really really addicting. I filled up on onion rings before I made it home. Where the problem lies. It's 20 min from Midtown even if you drive like a bat outta hell like I do. And the steam from the fresh fry actually makes your once delicious piece of cod soggy. SOGGY. How can it get soggy in paper? Freshly fried? The paper holds in the heat... and the moisture. By time I got home, I couldn't break off a nice chunk of deliciousness. It fell off. Kind of like a hunk of rotting flesh. Yeah, nice imagery, I know. I am sure there was cole slaw, and I'm sure that I took a bite -- AS USUAL -- expecting to be blown away. Why do I do that? I hate 99% of cole slaws out there, but I have to taste all of them -- even though I know by smell I won't like it. But seriously, now, who eats cole slaw? That's like loving ice berg lettuce. I just don't get it. Bonus: you can substitute onion rings for the chips. Minus: their version of tartar sauce is just meh. For take out -- 1. You go up to the counter and order. 2. You get a ticket and you wait for it to be fried for you. 3. You collect the goods, and bolt for the door to be stopped by... 4. The bill you owe. Pay on your way out -- cash only! Definitely the best chippery around here. Worth an adventure. Easy on/off the Lodge. Everything made to order. Mmmmm... I hear some crackling frying fish calling my name now... I think I will eat the fish first and THEN the onion rings. To maximize crunchiness!! *********CASH ONLY*************

I completely agree with the reviewer who says, "let's be real clear here, people, about what Scotty Simpson's is and isn't." So let's be clear. Scotty's IS in a bad neighborhood. Yes, it's Detroit and yes it is a pretty bad area, Brightmoor. My grandparents and great aunts and uncles lived in this neighborhood when my parents, aunts, uncles and their cousins were just kids and my dad was raised here. So I know all about this neighborhood. It's not good. But I, having always went with my family, have never had any issues with the neighborhood. And we have gone at times ranging from afternoon to late evening and even been walking out in pure darkness. My family has been eating at Scotty's since they opened in 1950 and the majority of us love it. I have a cousin who thinks it's too greasy. My stepmom doesn't really care for fish. So, yeah, there are some people out there who just don't like it. But MAN am I glad I'm not one of those people! Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips is JUST THAT. Fish and chips. You don't make the trek to Scotty's to get a burger or chicken. You go for the fish, the chips and the shrimp. (My grandpa also likes the frog legs but I haven't tried them.) You don't go for the baked or grilled fish either, which I'm sure is delectable though. (In fact, the current owner's son claims on Scotty's website that the grilled cajun fish is his favorite.) You don't go for health food. You go for the down home goodness of perfectly fried cod fillets. You go to Scotty's for the homemade fries and homemade coleslaw. You go for the kitsch. And you go to support this mom and pop restaurant who do fried fish right in Brightmoor, Detroit. Scotty's is real deal Detroit home-style food cooked by good people. And if you don't LIKE Detroit, then I guess you're not going to like our food either. More for those of us who just LOVE it!! :} Speaking on the decor of Scotty's; yes it is old. Yes, they have been open since 1950 and no, it doesn't look like they have changed a whole lot since then. I am not a pretentious snob so I adore the walls plastered with fish, notes, articles about Scotty's, pictures of the family and friends, the kitschy decorating scheme, old tables and chairs, and all the charm of the old jukebox that still takes quarters and the black and white letter-board menu hanging over the counter where most of the food is cooked. I think it speaks volumes of Scotty's that after 60 years, not only are they still open but they are true to their beginnings. There are several waitresses who have been there over 20 years and the restaurant has only had 3 owners since opening. So not only can Scotty's keep customers, they keep their employees too. You won't get handed a menu at Scotty's. There is a menu hanging over the cooking area and if you really do need to see a menu, they'll be happy to hand you one so feel free to ask. However, the true patron of Scotty's doesn't need a menu. ;) Order a soda to wash everything down. My family is large so we get a couple baskets of rolls that come with dinner. Some of the rolls have seeds on them and some don't. I choose one that doesn't, and it's lusciously bread-y and sink your teeth in delicious. I recommend saving the roll to eat WITH dinner, not before. There is something about bites of that buttered up roll in between the fish, fries and coleslaw that is just so right. Order the fish and shrimp combination. You get three pieces of flaky, beautiful cod fried to a perfect crispy golden brown, four or five (I can't remember offhand) luscious jumbo shrimp also fried to an unbelievably perfect crispy golden brown, homemade fries that taste amazing, and homemade coleslaw that has a sweet, tangy zip to it. You also get tartar, cocktail sauce and lemon. The tartar and cocktail containers are tiny so if you need more, do ask. They do charge like 10 cents or somewhere near there for extra. BUT the tartar is homemade and thick and flavorful. I don't know if the cocktail sauce is homemade but it IS some damn good cocktail sauce. Nothing on anyone's plate ever goes to waste when my family goes to Scotty's. If there's extra, someone will always eat it. I believe I did see a reviewer mention carry-out. Scotty's is not a carry out food. I've never gotten fish from anywhere that survived a drive home, no matter how short, and stayed crispy. You also do not get a roll, coleslaw or tartar when you carry-out at Scotty's. You only get the fish and chips, unless you ask for additional items, which you will be charged for. I love this restaurant. I love everything about it from the fact that it is in my dad's old neighborhood in Detroit, to the waitresses who still offer my little brothers sugar suckers, to the jukebox that has my grandpa's favorite song on it, to Harry (the owner) frying up our food behind the counter where we can see and speak to him, to the kitschy unchanged decor, to the delicious comfort food I grew up loving. I am and will remain a lifelong customer.

Fantastic fish 'n' chips. The best around. I hadn't been here in years when I got a half off deal in my e-mail. The light went on and I remembered the old building on the corner of Dolphin and Fenkell. My grandparents lived down the street from this place and I remember it my whole life, but I hadn't been there in many years. When I was a kid, you could walk around down there and people lived there. It was a thriving neighborhood. Now?...well I go during the day and I go armed. Back to the food...simply put, the best fish & chips around... Perfect fish & chips. It's like a time capsule. Eat there, you'll understand when you get there. Seriously, you don't want to take anything of value out the door. It's just like I remember (inside!) and the food is worth risking your life for...or someone else's life. You could invite a someone you don't care for much, and that you know you can outrun... Tuck your gun in your pocket, and get your @s$$ down there. No gun?...good luck!

Went to Scotty's. Got the fish. Got the shrimp. Got the chips. Got the onion rings. Got out the life preserver. Took a bath in hot oil-it was everywhere! It squirted out of all the aforementioned treats. When I arrived at 8pm on a saturday night, the place was empty, with most chairs on the tables. The owner and servers were super nice, and fast. The wife liked the cole slaw, and she HATES cole slaw. The fish was fresh tasting but the texture was too mushy for me, kind of like oatmeal..yecccch! Everything was excellent tasting but was too oily. I hate the feeling of oily/greasy lips every bite. The owner gave the kid a sucker after dinner, a real nice guy. 4 stars for the service, 2 for the oily food. I can't eat anything this oily. Think of a crunchy Arthur Treacher's with triple the oil. Maybe if they let it drain on racks in a 500 degree oven for 5 minutes after they fried it, it would be edible to me. I think their fish dinner would laugh at a roll of paper towel. Too bad I can't go back.

I made the mistake of inviting a coworker to dine with me who: a) brought no cash and b) ordered HAMBURGERS. Even the help at Scotty's got into the act of running this fella down. They ultimately gave him a piece of fish to try. I think they felt sorry for him. Scotty's is a very old school family run Fish and Chips spot in an old neighborhood on the Detroit's West Side. I ordered a 3 piece Fish and Chips lunch, and was very pleased. The fish was very fresh, lightly breaded and perfectly fried. The chips were perfectly cooked as well. The service was very friendly and quick, and the decor on the walls was very historic and interesting. However, Sir Cedrics in Windsor is one star better, but much more expensive. That said, Scotty's is a great choice if you are craving a traditional fish fry.

I've lived in Detroit my entire life and never heard of this place until recently. It's quite a drive from my house, but I decided to haul my "not so happy" wife over to the west side for some fish. As a kid, I remember some decent fish places out there - Dukes, Milroys, among others. However, these days the only place I seem to like is Pat O'briens, where the fish is good and everything else sucks pretty bad. To my elation - the food at Scotty Simpsons was everything I hoped it would be. It was old school.....it was outta this world. This IS the best fish in Detroit bar none. It is light and flaky. It is absolutely the best tasting I've had in 30 years!!! The restaurant itself is not so desirable. It's in a nasty neighborhood to start with. 2ndly, when you walk in you can smell the grease in the air. It's not a nice place - but it's tolerable. It's very old and everything on the walls etc. looks like it has been there for 40 years without change. Maybe that all adds to the experience, I'm not sure. I highly recommend any fish lover to experience Scotty Simpsons. I know I plan on going back as often as possible. For Father's Day my kids asked me where I wanted to eat - I said, Scotty Simpsons without hesitation.

A-OK is what this place is! We didn't think it was in such a bad neighborhood until the day after we were there someone got shot 2 blocks away! On the positive side, they have a guy who's only job is to watch the cars, so that's nice.... The service is great!! Our waitress was funny, attentive, and helpful. We ordered the fish and shrip and it was greasy and delicious. Very small sides of tartar, cocktail, etc, but you can always get more. The rolls were REALLY good!! Fish was perfectly cooked and the shrimp had a nice breadcrumb batter that was crispy. Did it blow my mind? No, but it was really really really good and I'm very glad that we went there and tried it. Prices are way high. $38 (after tip) for 2 fish and shrimp dinners. No drinks, no apps, no dessert....just fish and shrimp. Yikes. If pricing were a little more reasonable, I'd be more inclined to go back, but I'm pretty sure I can find better fish and chips for less $$ than that. Worth a try!
(3)Reginald S.
Unfortunately, I have had to quit going to Scotty's even though they have great Fish-n-Chips. My wife refuses to even get out of the car because of looks of the surrounding neighborhood. It's unfortunate that Scotty's didn't pull-up stakes years ago and move to a better locale. You can say all you want about being a booster for a Detroit comeback, but it will not come back to this immediate area. But again, Scotty's has great Fish-n-Chips.
(4)Liz W.
Top notch quality fried fish and chips. The batter is light and crispy and the delicious fish is perfectly cooked inside of it. I liked the zip of the coleslaw, the fresh fries and the roll was fine. Not cheap at nearly ten bucks but worth every penny of it. My husband got some onion rings and I thought they were excellent too. I use way too much tartar and had to request more but they were very nice about it. They have a small or large option to pick from for a small fee. Scotty's has a unique atmosphere and a casual charm. It is in a bit of a bad area though for most uptight type suburbanites. I am fine myself but I would not send my mom out here after dark or anything as she would freak out. I will come back anytime though.
(4)John F.
I have lived in Detroit for just a few months, and one of my sel-assigned chores is to find a great fish and chips shop. This place was recommended several times. This place is amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly, the slaw was ice cold and vinegary, and the chips were crispy on the outside, but not overlooked inside. Will be back many more times. The neighborhood is fine, it is just a long drive from downtown Detroit. Cash or checks, no credit cards.
(5)Dennis B.
Went with my wife and my parents today. We all had something different, shimp, fish, smelt and perch. All were battered and deep fried. We all like what we had. If there was one thing to complain about, it would be that it was a little oily. But what would you expect from deep fried food? Cool atmosphere, location is a little scary. But hey it's in the D.
(4)Mark M.
This is the best fish and chips place hands down. The fish is fresh, super greasy, and cooked perfectly. I have never had any fish and chips that came close, or even tasted/looked similar to the way they do it here. They have a very unique recipe. I've tried fish and chips even in Seattle, taking advantage of the fresh fish from Puget Sound, but nothing has been close. The fish here is reasonably priced, so you could feed your family easily on a tight budget. One big thing though: Don't bring your family here, get take out. This is NOT in a nice neighborhood. Growing up, we only got pick up, since we never wanted to go to the neighborhood. If you want a dine in experience, you can go to Scotty Simpon's second location in Michigan calld "Lynn's Cafe" in Brighton. They serve it exactly the same.
(5)Chiwei L.
YUMMY. I am no expert, but this is the kind of place I love. This family has been doing fish and chips for decades, and have really refined it to an art. Light flaky Icelandic cod flown in fresh every day, with a supper crispy and crunchy crust. Seriously delish, and you feel the history ooze from the walls. From what I have gathered, for the regulars, this place has become a religious pilgrimage. The only place I have to really compare is the semi known place in new york where they fry up Twinkies. They were good, but Scottys is better. As a side note, the soup was average, the tarter sauce was average, the banana cream pie was pretty good. In the end, you can't go wrong with the Fish and Chips!
(5)John K.
The batter for the fish was amazing! Along with the great tasting tartar sauce, this was one of the best fish n chips I have ever had. I also loved the decorations inside, definitely one of a kind. I didn't think the neighborhood was scary at all. Don't let that be your reason for not visiting this place.
(5)Cheryl M.
The best. The fish is just so, so fresh tasting. Friendly staff. The coffee was good too.
(5)Lola D.
This place would go on the list of "My regular, no fuss place for food when around that area." This place is in the hood now, but it has been at the location since before it was the hood. Current owner has been working there since he was a boy and is still preparing the food. He can also tell you some wicked stories about Brightmoor. The fish and chips are made according to Scottish recipe. This means the seasonings are at bare minimum on purpose. The flavor comes from the freshness of fish and and beer, or mineral water in batter. The atmosphere is old school, no fuss fisherman's grub stop, unchanged from the 50s. The crowd is full of old white folks talking about the good ol' days.
(5)Mary D.
What would I do without my trusty 3G iPhone and the fabulous YELP app?! Surely I would miss gems like Scotty's. We had the fish n chips and ate every delectable bit. The fries were so-so but ya know, we were there for the also amazing onion rings, which run a close second to Casey's unbelievable crack rings in Ann Arbor (wide 'n fried and amazing). I've been seriously cutting the fried and refined flours out of my diet and have lost many pounds- even so, Scotty's was a treat that was well worth the splurge. The cole slaw is homemade and just wonderful! And I hate cole slaw! My other half ate every greasy morsel of his hand- patted burger, which was very good. I grew up just down the street on Stout St and we only ever went to Bett 'n Jessie's fisn 'n chips (now in Farmington). Scotty's never bailed out on Detroit and we'll be back! Go Scotty's!! BTW, just ignore the chicken hearted suburban white folks below who nervously describe the neighborhood (just S of Old Redford). It's urban, it's close to Brightmoor but you're not gonna get shot. Just relax and get your happy butt down here, xenophobes! Not every place in the world is (or should be) scrubbed, polished and decorated with mid-century hipster toys and serving up reheated frozen Gordon Food Service junk.
(5)John G.
We returned. We ate. It was good. Better than the first visit in fact.
(4)Amber R.
I was BAMBOOZLED by the reviews on here... Woman cashier was rude and they charge for tartar and they didnt look that clean fish had no flavor and a lil soggy fries had no salt and tartar wasn't all that either.. Guess Im still on,a quest for good fish n,chips still... Oh and they charge higher if you dine in:-( Really like your on fenkell across the street where prostitutes stand and make it clap for the wierdos driving pass..
(1)Linda P.
Fish is so good here and the coleslaw is wonderful.
(5)Ron R.
I live in Plymouth and will drive to Scotty's with a smile. Reminded me of Highland Fish & Sutherland Fish. I miss them so much. After so many years my wife and I have found a good replacement. RKR Plymouth
(5)Carl T.
Simply the best foe fish and chips. Consistently delicious over 60 years can't be wrong!
(5)Judy F.
Decided to try this after seeing a groupon. Thought it would be fun to try and it really was! We went just after lunch and were going to do a carry out when the counter gal said we really should stay, as the meal would be much better. She was right! I had the Frostie Ginger Beer. Husband got a Pepsi served in what used to be a regular glass (they said a lot of the stuff was still original from the 50's) that was about 8oz. I got the fish/chips (~$10), he got a platter w/perch, shrimp and cod (~$15). it was great! And I love the slaw...not mayo and not oily. Really good. Fries were dark and crispy. Also came w/a good roll w/butter. They have a jukebox that another customer had loaded some songs on. Service was great, waitress gave us a brief history of the place. It's a little out of the way for us but apparently, there are still people that seek it out. The 2 elderly ladies that were leaving had come from Dbn Hts.
(5)Matt N.
Read the reviews of this place and had to try it myself. I must say the claims of, "The Best Fish and Chips" are just a statement of fact and not statement of opinion. This was by far the best fish and chips I have ever had. I have to admit that I had already drank the Kool-Aid on this place from the reviews and once I arrived the experience got even better. I went on Sunday 9/13/09 at about 4:00 pm. The restaurant was empty with just Harry, the owner, behind the bar and a waitress in the back. This place feels like a fishing trip. The walls are covered with trophies, trophy fish, and family photos. It has model boats, sailor statues, and picture frames covered in sea shells. It's the kind of decor other restaurants try to recreate and fail at that here is truly authentic. I had the fish and chips with an Orange Cream Soda (because they were out of ginger beer.) Besides the aforementioned fish and chips the meal also comes with a roll and Cole slaw. All of it was awesome with the true standout being the fish. The batter is so light, crispy and not a heavy at all. The fish is savory, juicy, and wonderful. I would have eaten three plates of it if I could. You need to go here. You must go here. Places like this are the diamond in the rough. The owner has worked in this place for forty years. No one does things like that anymore and I feel that once it's gone it will be gone forever.
(5)Brian H.
So, so, so good. Walking in to Scottys is like walking into a time capsule. I don't thing anything has changes since it opened. I have had the traditional fish and chips, baked fish, and Perch. All are excellent but the Cod is the best. My only complaint would be that I need a bigger portion. I always count on the Mrs. to not eat some of hers so I can get and extra piece. Save room for the pumpkin pie when it is in season. Which reminds me. I've got to get there soon.
(5)Michael P.
The fish is good, lightly battered and very tasty. The fried shrimp is also very good. The problem is that you don't get very much and it's pretty pricey (over $50 for 3 people). I think there are other fish and chip options in the area that give you more and cost less.
(3)Jonny P.
I really wanted to like Scotty Simpson's, I am willing to give it another go but when it came down to it my perch was just BLAND. I mean basic seasoning (salt & pepper) was just non-existent. My fish was fried well but flavor was lacking. Maybe this was just hyped up a bit in my mind but really if it wasn't placed between Southfield and Dearborn I wouldn't really go for it again. At $12 it's a bit pricey for what you get. I see the charm in the restaurant and I will revisit, maybe I caught an off day...
(2)Erich Z.
Where do I start? The best fish. The best chips. The best cole slaw. And wash it all down with a tasty and bitey Ginger Beer. Scotty Simpson's is my kind of comfort food. It's bad for you, but in small quantities it must be good for you - it just feels right. One story that sticks in my mind is that my wife's grandmother was always trying to get their cole slaw recipe. She would ask and they'd just shake their heads. She tried countless variations at home, and the only thing she was ever sure of was that they didn't use mayonnaise. If you've never been, go. It's been around forever, but that doesn't mean it *will* be around forever.
(5)Clayton C.
I've been going to Scottys all my life and loved it every time. I grew up a few miles away in North Rosedale and I can remember the days when there would be a line out the door on Fridays for carry out. It's pretty much the same inside as back when I was a kid. Same hockey tropheys, same fish on the walls, same people working there (at least some of them). It's one of the last businesses left on the old Brightmore drag of Fenkell and it deserves big props for sticking around when just about everything else moved out. The fish is fantastic, though don't even think about the calories or fat. Perfectly crispy and tasty. Like I said, I've been eating it for over 30 years and NEVER had a bad piece of fish. I love this place. It's part of my life and I'll probably come back here a couple of times a year at a minimum until it's gone (or I'm gone). My sister always got the chicken when we were kids and I have to say - the chicken pretty much sucks. Stick to the Fish and Chips and you can't go wrong. Very reasonably priced (about 10 bucks out the door) and it feels good to me to support a place like this. One word of caution - the neighborhood ain't no joke. Be careful. It's about as bad as Detroit gets, so don't go there thinking you're in a nice area. You're not and its pretty obvious to everyone you don't live there. Never had a problem myselft, but I've seen some pretty scary characters walking around there. Don't let that stop you from going, just be aware of your surroundings and lock your shit up before you go in. On Fridays when they are most busy, they actually have a guard or two watching the cars. Don't be a cheapster. Throw them a buck or two for watching your ride. Support Scotty's. Your stomach and your soul will thank you.

I was kind of torn between a 4 and 5 star rating for this restaurant, but ultimately had to go with 4. The best: This was perhaps the best cod I've ever had, very good quality fish that was cooked very well. It wasn't too chewy or anything. Unlike many other reviewers, I thought the batter just alright. It was a bit blah and a bit too thick. Not to say it was bad, with the fish was of such high quality I scarfed down the whole meal. The Fish and Chips ran $9.75, but like I said the quality of fish was so great that it was worth it. The meal also came with coleslaw, a roll, and a TINY (ask for more) container of tarter. The roll was average and the coleslaw was decent. I think there was green pepper in the coleslaw, something gave it a unique taste. The neighborhood wasn't great, but there was a guy watching the parking lot. But, all in all, it is worth taking a trip to this classic Chip Shop in a metro area that seems to be losing these types of cultural institutions. If you don't feel like driving to a dangerous neighborhood of Detroit, there are a few other options that are great. Leo's Country Oven in Madison Heights, MI has surprisingly good fish and chips (better batter, lower quality fish) with a very similar tarter sauce. Conner O'Neil's in Ann Arbor also has pretty good fish, some of the best batter i've had, but again it can't compare to the fish quality of Scotty's.

My mom and dad took us to Scotty's since we were babes in arms. I grew up in the neighborhood. Yes, it has changed since those days. But I am comfortable eating there, as the place is always being visited by cops and people like me who want the best in town. Their cole slaw is like nothing served anywhere! No mayonnaise here! It has a very light, slightly sweet vinegar flavor. Perfect! The fish is always perfect. Crispy, with juicy moist fish that melts in your mouth. Try the fried shrimp. It's the best! And the fries are fresh cut and sizzling from the fryer. Did I mention they make their tartar sauce in house? I never put it on the fish- why mess with perfection? I like dipping the fries in the tarter sauce- what can I say, I'm a freak! And top it off with a spicy ginger beer and there you have it. And on Fridays they serve home made pies! What's not to love? The place is like a step back in time. And now my daughter, who I brought in as a babe in arms, is in love with Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips. And bring lots of quarters for their old Juke Box and listen to Patsy Cline and Elvis.

From what I understand, this place is a classic. And I must say deserves its reputation as the best fish and chips in Detroit. It could be the best fish and chips I've ever had, truth be told. I was truly impressed with the fried-to-perfection cod and the not-changed-in-fifty years decor. Just my kinda place. I urge you to get your fry on at this place. They also have shrimp, smelt, and chicken. And some amazing cole slaw. It's a hold out in a neighborhood where many things have not held out. Take the trip and spread the news. This place deserves your patronage, and - considering the rate at which gems like this are disappearing from Detroit - may even require it.

Stopped in while visiting the family for Thanksgiving. Had an excellent combo of fish and chips and shrimp. Everything was very fresh and tasty. The shrimp were huge and delicious. As others have said, the neighborhood is not good. But, it was fine during the day. A return visit to Scotty's is definitely on the agenda for our next trip to Michigan.

I've never been here, but they do have a 'franchise' in Brighton, at Lynn's Cafe. I knew the fish at Lynn's Cafe was delicious, but had no idea it was iconic until I read the reviews here. I need to venture to the original location some day. lynnsandscottys.com

If you are looking for authentic fish and chips in michigan, this is the winner. Hands down. The fish batter is crispy, a slight buttermilk taste, and rich in taste. The fries are good, hand cut and fried to order. The freshly made tartar sauce is amazing. Chunks of pickle throughout. As much as I enjoy the fish (which is fresh not frozen generous slices of cod) the serving fills me up. They wrap your portion in paper (minus the newspaper ink variety) and I think that helps keep it wonderfully crispy and hot once I get my carryout home. Two items of caution: no ATM, bring cash and I wouldn't recommend looking around this area for an ATM ...the area is a bit scary. Having said that I highly recommend it for the adventurous eaters.

Great fish and chips! Best I've had outside of England. Good slaw. Great homemade cream pie. Warm, attentive staff and owner who take pride in the food. What a cool place! I will definitely be back. I also loved driving around the Brightmoor neighborhood, looking at all the parks and paintings they've put up. What an inspiring neighborhood.

Best fish and chips joint for eye candy, great locals, peaceful atmosphere, and great food. One of the places Anthony Bourdain should have come to in his "Rubelt" episode. You always leave with a smile on your face, and your cell inhand texting friends pics of where you just ate. Simply put.
