Thai restaurants seem to be popping up all over the place these days. However, there's something that stands out about this place that's particularly special. As for atmosphere and decor, it's a little internationally industrial if that makes sense. Quite nice, spacious and well sound control. As for the food (the main attraction), I believe this restaurant holds true to authentic Thai cuisine. I started off with a hot and sour soup and a Spring roll. Both were both very tasty and full of delicious robust flavors. When I visite any Thai restaurant the first thing I try (to make sure that this place is going to be any good) is the pad Thai noodle. I have visited this place a couple years ago and it is still as good as I can remember. I enjoyed the different variations and spiciness levels. The portion size were large but and not overwhelming, and the prices were very reasonable! Finally, the customer service was pretty good. nothing that stood out to be super special but it was just right. My server was very attentive and he was knowledgeable about the menu, he also gave me insight on information about cocktails and drinks. I'm pretty picky about my Thai food because it's my favorite. this place is probably one of my favorites. And I think a plus is it's location in the heart of downtown Detroit's, Eastern Market District.

I went to school at WSU and I frequented Sala Thai with friends many of times. In fact this is the first place I tried Sushi, a number of years ago. I was very satisfied and have pushed the envelope a littler further each time. Great variety at the sushi bar. Great presentation and most importantly very tasteful! Love the quaint, unique ambiance here. Plus it's got a full bar if you're interested. I have only dabbled into a couple menu items outside of the sushi but what I have had (pad thai especially is really good) are great portions, even enough for lunch the next day =) I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family that like good sushi!!

We go to Sala Thai for lunch pretty regularly. It's very tasty and the lunch service is usually pretty good. They have a great drunken noodle, pad prik and even their deep fried tofu is tasty - and I hate tofu! While I haven't had it, I've heard their sushi is very good and comes in generous portions. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that the spice levels get a little inconsistent. I can definitely handle my spice and the medium+ literally made me cry. Twice in the same day. But it was so good that I couldn't stop, despite the agony. If you can't handle spice, mild is your safest bet (allegedly no spice).

Absolutely love this place. Whenever I'm craving Thai, this is usually the only place that comes to mind. With the recent popularity of Thai food, most places have gone extremely downhill. Not here. Generous servings and reasonable prices for what you're getting. We had the house sake and it wasn't bad either. I wish there was a Downriver location because most times, the thought of getting dressed to go out to eat makes me sad, and it's too far for takeout for me...I think... Great food. Great atmosphere. Clean. Real chicken. Yay!

A fun place, comfy and a good price for excellent thai. Will definitely be going back.

I had the urge for Thai, so I had to visit Sala Thai for carryout. It's been a while, but I always order the N2 Pad See-ew which is noodles, eggs, brown sauce, bean sprouts, and broccoli. I order it with chicken, but you can order it with beef, pork, shrimp, squid, or scallops. As I sit here and eat, I'm saddened by the lack of broccoli and chicken. There is only one broccoli sprout in the entire box. It's more of a noodles drenched in brown sauce than anything. Not pleased with this meal, but will try something else and see if it was a separate incident because I went right before closing.

My friend and I were looking for a dinner spot, and decided on Sala Thai. It had just won some local award (Metro Times Best Thai in Wayne County, I think), we were looking for a place to go in the City, and we both enjoy Thai food. It was one of the bigger restaurant mistakes we have made recently. The evening started out alright. We put in an order for a spring roll and a Sala Thai Crunch Roll as we thought about our entree selections. The spring roll came in a few minutes and it was good. We placed our orders. My partner had Kuoy Tiew Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodle). She asked the waitress, and was guaranteed, that dish could be made without the peppers. She ordered it No Spice. Both of these are typical instructions when we have been to other Thai restaurants, as she has a pepper allergy. I ordered the Gaeng Mat-Sa-Man with chicken. And we began to wait eagerly for the signature Crunch Roll. And we waited. And waited. For about 15 minutes. The waitress came back and said various things, "We are busy today," (there were several open tables), "You know how these things are," (no, not exactly), and "I will ask the kitchen what is up with your roll" (no response). Finally, the fourth time she came back, unapologetic, my partner ordered a Tom Yum soup as we waited. The soup came. It was ok. Finally the Crunch Roll arrived. It was awful. Completely awful. It appears to have been left on the grill approximately, er, 15 minutes too long? The tempera was burnt to a crisp, and the ingredients, billed as raw, were more than well done. As we were looking at it, pondering, our entrees came. My partner's Drunken Noodles clearly had peppers throughout it. When she inquired of the waitress, the waitress said, "Oh of course they are in there, that is how we made the spicing." When my partner reiterated her allergies to peppers, the waitress become a bit obnoxious. "Well we put peppers in all of our dishes. That is how we make the sauce" When my partner mentioned that she has had such dishes without pepper at numerous other Thai places, there was no response from the waitress. No attempt to remedy the situation. No apology. No alternative. Just attitude. Miserable. I collected my dish in a to go carton and we left. The result? 45 minutes and $25 spent, and no dinner. And a headache. Forget this place. There are better Thai places in Metro Detroit (think Pudthai & Sushi in Rochester) and better places in Eastern Market (think Supino Pizza.)

I work in the Compuware/Quicken Loans area, where there are about three Thai restaurants, so why would I come to Sala Thai? I'll tell you why: they have great food, a great, low-key atmosphere, and great drinks. Plus, because they are a bit off the beaten path, lunching there is like taking a nice little getaway from the business (and irritation) of business. The wait staff is friendly and the place can get crowded. However, I love the fresh food and the dark decor.

I go to this restaurant all the time. Recently quality has gone down big time. Rice quality is worst. They also increased the prices. I wouldn't recommend.

I keep their menu within arm's reach at work. This place hasn't failed me yet. We usually call in our carry-out order OR sometimes, we'll sit in and eat. I always get the Pad See-ew, affectionately referred to as "N2". One day, I'll venture elsewhere on the menu, but for now, N2 has my heart. Their sushi is pretty good, too. I've only had it once, though, thanks to a table tent displaying their sushi roll special for the day. Nice exterior -- an old Firehouse! Typical interior -- The booths are raised and if you're not a teeny person, it's a little awkward to get in and out of the booth. Portion size -- I usually get the lunch portion and it's filling! Service -- carryout is quick. Dine-in is also decent. We only get 1 hr for lunch and can usually pull it off there. Check their website for the menu if you want to call ahead.

The food hear is pretty good. You'll be able to find something for everyone to like. I enjoy their green curry, catfish, pad thai, and of course satay. It isn't the best thai food I have had, but it definitely satisfies the craving. It's great take out food for those lazy Saturdays. The decor is a bit odd, but who cares about that.

I usually go between chicken pad thai and chicken fried rice at Thai restaurants, and both are good here. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. Love to come here for lunch meetings, booths are great for space for larger groups. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go browsing through Eastern Market.

A friend has been telling me that this is the best Thai restaurant hands down for years. While I don't agree with that, I will agree that it's the best in the city of Detroit. I got the gan gai chicken, medium. I had a nice amount of spice and was delicious. Spring rolls were good and I do enjoy that there is a bar, something that I have not experienced and a Thai restaurant before. If you're a sushi fan this place has you covered too.

I give Sala Thai 5 stars without even thinking about it. I love Thai food and Sala Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant. I work in midtown Detroit so I make sure to come to Sala Thai for lunch at least 2 to 3 times a week. My meal of choice is the #14 seafood combination minus shrimp (because they don't cut the tails off???). I like a good amount of spice so I typically get this dish extra hot. The wait staff is so nice and they will remember you if you come in only a handful of times. I highly recommend Sala Thai!

I went here for lunch and it was extremely busy so we sat down at the bar. I ordered the Thai tea which was very good and my boyfriend got the spring rolls which were more like egg rolls but still good. It took forever for the food. When it finally came I took a few bites of my dish , I ordered a dish with lime leaves and fried tofu. It had this very over powering lemon grass flavor. It was too sweet for my liking. My boyfriend had the gang get which was just ok. I heard rave reviews about this place so my expect ions were very high.service wasn't too bad considering they were crazy busy. I probably wouldn't go back. They were just ok for me.

I stumbled onto this gem just because it was open and I was in the area.I have been back dozens of times ever since. I will say this honestly, I love this place and recommend it anyone. Even if you don't like Thai food. Originally, I didn't like Thai food, but this place converted me into a Thai fanatic! The restaurant is an old firehouse station and nice decorations. I always like sitting at the bar, the booths can be kinda big for just two people. The staff is so friendly and even crack a joke with you every now and then. But what keeps me coming back is the seafood fried rice and Thai iced tea. Ever since I've had this fried rice, the fried rice from other restaurants just doesn't compare. I know they have other locations, but this location is special to me just because I've never had a bad experience there. Even if you're not in the mood for Thai, they have sushi and a good drink menu. I will continue to go to the place for years to come. Get up and go get some Sala Thai!

I've always had mixed experiences with this particular Sala Thai. From an ambiance standpoint, I love this restaurant, it's an old building, connected to a fire house and has a lot of charm. I always end up wishing that it didn't have the TV in the corner because I generally find it really distracting, but TVs in Thai restaurants in Michigan seem to be the norm, so I roll with it. The food. Sala Thai is known for the heat factor. As other reviewers have noted, even the mild has a good amount of heat to it and if you go with hot or extra hot, be prepared to spend some QT with your porcelain BFF. The service can be very spotty, depending on what day or what time you go, but the food is usually prepared pretty well and I believe they make one of the better Thom Kah soups I've tasted in metro Detroit. I usually opt for the Pad Cashew or the Pad Prik. If you're a fan of squid as your main protein in the dish, avoid it. It's always overdone and too rubbery. The beef and chicken are done better and I've found most of the vegetables to be reasonably fresh. In a pinch, Sala Thai does the job. Are there better Thai options in the city? You bet.

Great menu, and a wide array of spicy dishes. I dared to order the "hot" once and was satisfied; usually go with medium+. Stick with the "mild" or "mild plus" if you don't prefer the heat. Curry dishes are great! Have dined in & carried out; the reason for 4-star is portion of carry out could be more consistent. The food is great, but sometimes quantities leave you wanting more.

A great place to bring out-of-town guests. Just north of Eastern Market in an old firehouse. Great food and selection. Busy lunch crowd. Reasonable prices in a cool setting. One aspect I really like is that if you order hot, or spicy, it is really HOT, unlike other places who always over compensate and you cannot get food made spicy enough. You have been warned but it's delicious.

This is a very decent restaurant if your in the mood for Thai. The spice level of their food is right on. I usually have a high tolerance for spicy food but can only order as far as a medium spice scale. I have had hot but only on certain dishes. I would recommend dining in this restaurant or even carry out. Most restaurants give you more portions while you dine in but Sala Thai does not fail to give you the same amount of servings as if you were to carry out. I prefer the fried rice and the Pad Thai is amazing here. It's one of my top 5 places to dine.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant. I've been visiting this place for years and when we lived downtown, I'd go weekly. The portions are generous and the food is fresh and tasty. Their spice level is very accurate and those who are unable to tolerate spice we do very nicely here. The Gang Gai, Pad Thai, Curry Chicken, Pad Pak, and spring rolls are all excellent. It's a good sized place, but the decor makes for a cozy dining experience. It feels smaller than it is. There's rarely a wait for a table, except during the lunch rush, and the hostess is friendly and efficient. Carry out orders are always ready when I arrive and they even offer a discount for students, firemen, policemen, and the like.

We have been very hungry after roaming from morning so decided to have lunch and I found this one was near. I always like Thai food. Had pad Thai and pad pak. Amount of food was pretty generous. Both items were good. Probably I should asked for more spicy as I didn't feel much.

Solid 3 maybe a 4. I have been to several Thai places around town and I do like Sala Thai. Located in an old fire station, the building is full of charm. Yesterdays lunch (and todays) was wonderful. Seated immediately at 11:45 and we had 3 or 4 waitstaff come to take our drink order!! Now that's service. They make a really nice Pad Thai with squid. Full of flavor and not so over cooked that the noodles are moosh. My co-worker usually get the kow pad ta-lee which is a seafood style fried rice. Pretty blasted tasty. A great lunch place for those working downtown or midtown Detroit.

Great Thai place in Eastern Market. I opted for take-out and they were quick and professional. Portions were generous and the "hot scale" is true to spice. You're looking at paying around $10 a dish, but I think that's pretty standard now a days. Pad Thai, Pad Pak Fried Rice(good ratio of different veggies) and Curry Chicken were all tried with zero complaints!
We went there New Year's Eve, one of my friend recommended this place! The food was really good! The appetizer. Spring rolls - little extra oily but tasted good Tofu tod - perfect. Crispy and loved the sause. Soup- geang jud- we got the pot enough for 5 of us. Good if u like clear soups. Main course - Geang pak, very good. Veg fried rice - good Pineapple fried rice - average. As such I would have given five stars but the billing was a little sketchy so many additional charges and there was a totaling error. When I asked about it the waitress was not very happy explaining that to me. Thought that was little rude.

Pretty much a standard Thai restaurant. I was seated immediately, and greeted by a waitress within a minute. She suggested a few dishes and I ended up getting the Pad Pak, mild+. It was tasty, but could have used more broccoli. Our waitress was very helpful. I would recommend it if you're at Eastern Market and need a reprieve from the summer heat.

This place is absolutely horrible -- and simply not authentic Thai. From the sugary Tom Yum to their excuse of a larb. Disappointing all around. Not to mention their sushi is on the same level as sushi you'd buy at Walgreens or a gas station.. Absolutely dry, tasteless .. and definitely scary to think you're eating raw fish from them.
I love Sala Thai! Just know that it's authentic, so spicy means spicy. I'm a fan of heat, and I still only order medium. Medium Plus will definitely make your nose run! I've tried many of their Thai dishes. The spring rolls are crispy delights, and the curry puffs are AMAZING. They come with this delicious sweet cucumber relish that I could DRINK out of the bowl. Lol Seriously. Order those. I love the pad thai, though I know that's pretty basic. It's delicious. Also, the gang gai is DIVINE. Spicy, coconut milk, fresh peppers and mushrooms...YUM! Lastly, I almost always order sushi. Their specialty rolls are fresh, delicious, and creative. Don't feel wary about ordering sushi from here. Because Sala Thai is in Eastern Market, it's a great destination to take out-of-town guests, or clients for lunch. Do it.

Me and two of my friends went to Sala Thai on Tuesday evening. The food was great and reasonably priced. I had the chicken curry. It had red peppers, mushrooms and was in a red curry basil sauce. It was delicious. I ate the entire plate. I do not have too many comments which in this situation is great. The service was prompt and polite and the food came quickly. We will definitely be back!

The food is pretty good. The decor hasn't changed in 7 years. The carpet is old and kinda funky and on the way to the bathroom you have to pass an area that has a ton of clutter. If it wasn't for the good food we probably wouldn't go here. The service is ok.

I LOOOVE this place! The food is always fresh and good. I have been to Thailand, have eaten at alot of Thai and Indian restaurants, and this is probably the best Thai food locally. It is a bonus that they serve Sushi! Love the sushi. And if you like your curry super super hot, this is the only place to go! Plus it is near Eastern Market. BONUS!

Hands down my favorite Thai restaurant. The spice here is heavier than suburban Thai restaurants, so be conservative, but the food is amazing. I usually get the fried rice, which has tons of vegetables, or the red curry.

The issue with Sala Thai seems to be the inconsistency. Just scrolling down through the reviews it sounds as if they are from different restaurants. I've been to Sala twice. I like the atmosphere, an open room with high ceilings, wooden booths against one wall. The first visit the food was fair-good, but the second it was really good. I ordered pad se-ew on both visits. While some slight differences can be expected, the second was far more balanced and flavorful. The noodles were a thinner version of the rice noodles I am used to in this dish at other Thai restaurants, unexpected but still good. My friend ordered a curry at medium spice and we both noted how spicy it was, it would be hot anywhere else. Besides Thai they also have a sushi bar and menu (along with sides such as miso soup). I quite liked their spicy California roll and Jungle roll. There are better sushi restaurants in the area, but it was not a bad appetizer. I liked that the Jungle roll is vegetarian but was still interesting. We did not have any issues with the service and the wait for the food was average.

I didn't have yelp before making this review and made it just to warn you. THE Worst Thai food I've ever experienced. I'm surprised the ratings are so high. Service was horrible. They couldn't get our order right and food tasted disgusting especially sushi, fried rice. Our table of 4 people ordered different things and we all shared. Each dish was worse than the other. People in Detroit tend to overrate food thats barley edible. Not sure if that's due to lack of options and they've never had anything better. Or they have f*ed up taste buds...but I can tell you its not real Thai food. This place needs lower ratings.

This place is great for a quick lunch. The first time I came here (maybe 6 mos ago), I was blown away by the quality of their food and huge portion sizes. Today, I left disappointed. The food was okay, but the portions were tiny!! However, 4 stars bc the service is so patient and accommodating, not to mention they have a great sense of humor!! ~15 of us came for a friend's birthday. I called around 11:30am and made a reservation for 12:45pm. When we arrived, the table was ready immediately - no wait!! Also, we ordered wanted to do sake bombs, so they provided a menu for us to pick beer and sake....and provided pint glasses, shot glasses, and chopsticks. Great service!! We will be back. :) also, they are very busy during lunch IMO, but have quick service.

Sushi offerings are ok. The miso soup is microwaved. The bartender wore earbuds & watched her iPad during my entire stay, although she was reasonably attentive. I've eaten here several times and tried most of their offerings. I think there are better choices in Detroit for Asian food, and the staff has always been a bit standoff-ish.

I was craving Thai food so on a recent trip to Eastern Market, I spotted Sala Thai. It was lunch time so the place was busy but not crazy. We were seated promptly and I was impressed by the full menu. I asked my server about a few things and eventually ordered aBa-Mee-Mu-Dang Steamed egg noodles with roasted pork, green onions, bean sprouts and thai light brown sauce, topped with crushed peanut and fried garlic for $7.95. My soup arrived quickly and I dove in to discover that it was cold. I waited for our server to return and I told her. She said "yes, that's ok." Huh? I said, "Not hot" And she replied "You want spicier?" Oh boy...so I tried one more time "Too cold" And she nodded and walked away. My dining companion was cracking up. So I ate my cold soup which was flavorful but it could have been so much better :( She returned with our check and I asked about mango and sticky rice. Her reply "No" I asked "No?" She nodded, "No." and walked away. Now my dining companion was laughing so hard tears were running down her face. She thought perhaps I was being punked but didn't know it. I may come back to try the sushi sometime but based upon this visit, I'm not rushing over anytime soon.

I bordered between 2 and 3 stars. Nothing was really BAD about the place but nothing was really good either. I guess I expected more. The service was quick but very basic. She never came back to make sure I wanted another drink (which generally makes me decide that I DON'T). Basic "very little English" type of service. Language barrier aside, smiles are universal - don't take my order looking like your puppy just got hit by a car. Garlic spicy ribs weren't much to write home about. Fresh rolls were interesting though. My entree was ok. I've probably had better food at take out places. I told her "not-spicy" (when she asked spicy/not spicy) but that turned out to mean "no flavor". Nothing was nasty (and I have become picky on Asian food due to too many bad experiences), it just wasn't really good either. The meat was good quality compared to other regular Chinese/Thai carryouts so that's why I gave the third star, but I doubt I'll be back. Too bad the other Thai food places I have liked/wanted to try in my area don't serve alcohol (my reason for stopping in here over Sy Thai this week). This place has a cool building (old fire station) and seems like it could be a GREAT place... but instead they might as well be serving carry out out of some itty bitty storefront in one of Detroit's mostly-abandoned strip mall. Nothing special here. Wish they stepped their game up

I guess the verdict is in ... I don't care much for Thai food. Pad Thai was boring & one note. The Fried Rice with beef was bland and I can't figure out why they add tomatoes to this dish. If it's only for color then add red pepper since the tomato adds nothing. The wonton soup was odd. The meat inside the wonton was very tough. The broth was okay. We had 4 appetizers & the ribs tasted old and the sauce with them had a "metallic" finish. The mussels are okay but because they use a larger mussel they're chewier than most. The fried Tofu was bland and the fried Shrimp were the best thing all night long. Wanted to try the curry puffs but they were out. Hmmmm 6:00 on a Saturday night? Oh well. Better luck next time... Which will be never.

This place is totally gross. The dining room is so dirty and dusty. How could anyone get excited about food and drinks when you are sitting in filth? Looking out into the dining room one singular thought engulfed my mind, "where did it all go so wrong? " The food was either from a bag, a can or previously frozen. So if you dig that type of thing, this is the place for you. As for me and mine's, we'll pass.

this place sucks!! Overpriced, and the quality is terrible. Party of six, either the soup was too salty, dishes were cold, complaints everywhere. I got the pad thai, and I swear it was just like a fast to go place. Nothing was fresh, nothing good. The waitress double charged us too which is always lame. Do not waste your money here. Go to Sy Thai in Midtown, $4 cheaper per dish, and the quality is way better. So not worth it here.. and the prices are outrageous!!! On the plus side, the portions of huge, but does not matter when you are serving crap.

I'm not sure what happened, but the kitchen isn't at all what it used to be. I remember loving the food and the sake martini from here, but last time I was there the food was a variety of sins; overcooked, oversalted, overly greasy, and the bar tender didn't even have the materials or know how to make their signature sake martini..... I hope they get their act together again soon, because my last experience will keep me away for a while.

I AM TORN!!!!!!!!!!! If only you knew how TORN I am between 2 and 3 stars. Sala Thai has a great ambiance that many overseas Thai restaurants try to project. They managed to cram in a record number of tables into a relatively sizable space yet have some space that are more private booth type seating. The food however was... mediocre at best. Not excellent, not superb, not even Thai to some extent. Well some dishes were but not all. Was it good food? Some of it. Was it good Thai food? Not really. I mean what Thai restaurant doesn't do minced meat? The saving grace was that they had jalapenos in vinegar, something that I look for in every Thai restaurant. Usually they just have some kind of chili paste sauce but they had the real deal (well not the REAL deal as they don't use jalapenos in Thailand). Things were on the pricey side for the taste but the portions are pretty large so I guess that can be excusable. I was about to up it to 3 stars when I remembered something. EVERYTHING WAS SO SALTY!!! Back to 2 stars. We started with wonton soup, and OMGEE it was so salty. I'm not being very coherent in this review but I think I got all the points across. -food was mediocre, salty, and had large portions -if you're in a bind for thai-ish food in the area. Go for it, no one's stopping you. - if you want GOOD food, go next door for veal Parmesan.

this place is gross. for some reason there was mayo on my sushi (and it wasn't a piece of sushi that called for mayo), my food was cold yet much spicier than i requested (I asked for mild, it was eye-watering) and there was a sign up stating that the bathrooms were broken so we should use toilet paper and then THROW IT IN THE TRASH. GROSS. never going here again.

The lunch portions are ridiculously tiny. I have never been able to finish a full portion at any thai restaurant, much less still be hungry afterwards, but that was the case here. The spice levels are iffy, depending on what you get. A medium pad thai is tolerable, while a medium curry will burn your soul and leave you in serious trouble the next day. Been there, done that one too many times.

This use to be one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Detroit area. I have been eating at sala Thai for many years. The Thai food is great, no complaints. The sushi is average to below average. The cocktails are horrible. The dining room has become very dirty and cluttered. I hate that the first table is always filled with staff either on their computer, eating, or folding napkins. Was in here a week ago and the wait staff was not very attentive and the atmosphere in the dining room is uncomfortable. The late projection screen showing sports needs to go does not fit this place. After many years may be trying a new Thai restaurant for special dinners and will only do take out here.

Came for lunch on a Sunday and was surprised that there was no special lunch menu. The prices are a little steep but the portions are pretty generous. I was able to share an entree of green curry with chicken and still have enough leftover for lunch the next day. The curry was pretty spicy and there was a generous helping of meat and vegetables. It was on the salty side. We ordered a sticky mango rice to share and was really disappointed at the quality of the dish. The sticky rice looked and tasted like it had just been plopped on the plate and microwaved. You could've slid the entire portion off with a fork and it would look like a Rice Krispie treat. I was also disappointed at how little mango there was this time. Last time there were at least two halves of a mango but this time there was barely half a mango on the plate. The environment is nice and relaxed - the servers are pretty friendly but not very attentive to the customers.

The last TWO times I got a takeout order from there, they messed up my order. The first time, they gave me mild when I ordered extra hot. This time, I ordered drunken noodles and got fried rice. I'm done with this place!!

The place is nice and clean. The food is average. Medium is very spicy and had our noses running. We had the drunken noodles, pad Thai and the Thai pastry. They were ok, nothing special. The chicken is tasteless however, but it blends with the rest of the overwhelming spices. It's average.

One of the best thai restaurants I've been to. Whenever I'm in the Detroit area, this is my go to thai joint (and I've tried a lot all around the metro area). The ambiance is wonderful, with carved wooden booths and great decor. As for parking, they have a large fenced lot, and plenty of street parking. I've never been concerned parking here in Eastern Market, as they aren't many people around and not a lot of riff raff. The curries are by far some of the most flavorful and robust. Great complexity. The spice level at Sala thai is beyond most all other thai places. I usually order hot or extra hot; not at Sala thai. Medium or medium plus is just right. They will warn you if you order hot. Green curry is my favorite. I highly recommend it. Their spring rolls are thicker like egg rolls, but not in a won ton wrapper. These are not pencil thin spring rolls. They also have sushi and a nice bar. Try some coconut ice cream!

I just moved in the area and did not know this place was here. I tried it today and found the experience to be interesting. Very nice and attentive wait staff and the beer was cold. I ordered the #21. Pla Rard Prik, which was a deep-fried red snapper fish, topped with red peppers, fresh garlic, bell peppers and special Sala Thai red sauce (restaurant description). The portion size was decent but it tasted like the fish had gone from freezer to fryer. It was really tough. In fact, I now know why the knife was included with the serving dish. I'm not sure about this place yet. I'm going to give it another try since it is within walking distance of my apartment.

Coming here was my first time having Thai food and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I am a very picky eater & also don't like spicy food so I made sure to order my food with NO spice. The crew I was with all love spicy food and they told me that even the mild here is spicy so I took their word for it & my food wasn't spicy at all. Everyone else was sitting at the table sweating which I found amusing as I don't understand the point in eating food like that but hey, to each his own. I ordered some sort of pork & noodles dish in a broth (looked like ramen) with garlic & veggies & peanuts & it was tasty but the pork (which was shaved not chunky) was a little dry. I loved the full bar here & all in all had a great dinner at a decent price & had enough leftovers for another meal. I would definitely go back here but preferably in summer as it was so cold in here I had to wear my coat during dinner & they had space heaters scattered around the restaurant. Perhaps the heat was broken...I kind of assume it was as my other friends were confused by the heaters (they eat here often) but still I don't know that I'd want to chance it (I hope the A/C isn't out in summer) but wearing my coat during dinner really sucks!

After a failed attempt to eat at Supinos, my friend and I decided to head down the road for Thai instead. I actually drove by Sala on my way to Supinos and didn't even notice it, so thankfully my friend was familiar. Overall I thought it was a good choice. It was a very open restaurant, so no issues with seating (unlike Supinos, wah, wahhhh.) The food was reasonably priced and came out quickly. I had the Gaeng Phanaeng and it was tasty - perfect amount of spice and sauce to get soaked up in the rice. I had some leftover, but was flying out the next morning and knew it wouldn't get eaten. I was so sad to leave the leftovers behind.

Must have gone on an off night. Everything was over cooked, mushy vegetables, rubbery chicken. Strong taste of fish and cinnamon. The chilli garlic paste treated like. It was mixed with ketchup. The spicy tuna had chili powder on the outside, just weird. The waiter was friendly and informative.

My wife got 2 rolls that were good. I got the spicy tuna and yellowtail scallion. The yellowtail was meh, the spicy tuna was terrible. It tasted like they used mexican dry rub, very strange. I have been here a few times it seems to be going the wrong direction.

This is one of the better Thai places in the D. When it comes to Asian food, I'm not impressed with restaurants that just want spice up your meals by adding more and more crushed peppers. Unfortanately its the cheapest spice and happens to be the most commonly used. Spicy is supposed to be full of flavor, not something that burns your tongue for the heck of it. I generally get their Gaeng Pak (Vegetable curry), which is one of their best vegetarian items on the menu. If you like coconut, this is for you. Their Drunken Noodles are good too. I am a regular here.

Went back to Sala Thai and parked in the back in the parking lot - I know it is not their fault, but my new car got slammed into (passenger side back). So, I go into Sala Thai and ask them if they have cameras or a guard or anything in the parking area - finally someone who spoke real English said no they don't. Come on - no protection for your customers in the middle of Detroit!!! Get with it Sala Thai I do not think I will be back to your establishment until something changes! Food was alright, nothing special I can always visit the other Thai restaurant near WSU campus.

Sala Thai will always hold a special place in my heart, mainly because it was the first date Stephen and I went on. They have great traditional Thai dishes and their sushi is better than most places. Their service is hit-or-miss. One time they were extremely quick, but they seemed to be rushing us out of there. Another experience was better - our waitress was helpful with choosing dishes and was polite and personable. Despite those few criticisms, I would definitely recommend coming here for some Thai around Detroit!

I was disappointed. I used to get takeout from here when I worked nearby, and was excited to eat in the dining room because the building is a cool old fire station. Here are my grievances: 1. Very cold inside. Ate with my coat on and was still cold. (January) 2. Medium spice was PAINFULLY spicy 3. Didn't like the flavor of the #1 (cx curry) redolent of mildew 4. My toddler was acting up 5. #7 was just ok

Finally made it here! Came here for an incredibly late lunch or an early dinner around 4.00pm. Plenty of parking. The place is well decorated. I like it. The people who work here are pretty attentive and I like that. I've been to Bai Mai Thai plenty of times and I would like to say that it is pretty hard to compare. The service here is much better and both restaurants give you a hefty amount of food. I do think this place gives you more while Bai Mai Thai gives you complementary soup. I would need to try this place out a bit more to give a good comparison. Overall, the experience here was very good. They even offer sushi! That is the first time I ever experienced that with Thai food! They are also very hip. You can download the "punch" app and if you order 4 sushi dishes you get something. I forget. I ordered the Pad Cashew. It came with a ridiculous amount of rice. I thought it was pretty tasty and the added bonus was that I was not super thirsty afterwards. Yay for no msg! I would definitely like to come here again.

This place has really gone downhill. I don't go there anymore. Dining area is dirty and worn out. Prices are too high. Food is ok. Good parking. Wait staff can't speak English.

Beware of their website.if you hit "call us" it will direct you to their Sterling Heights location. Not knowing they have more than one location, my husband ordered carry out thinking he was calling the Detroit location. So when I showed up to pick up the order, it was not there and the cashier/host could not have been any less concerned. I ended up going elsewhere.

Was debating about getting take-out or eating there; chose to stay there and was reminded that it's a nice cozy place with a good atmosphere. Service was friendly and relatively efficient. Had two appetizers and the green curry, which was plenty of food for two people. Also appreciate the fact that they are open on Sunday nights, which too few places in the D are. There were a couple people sitting at the bar reading; overall a nice group of people and pleasant vibe.

Sala Thai has a good service, the price is reasonable and the food is delicious. I like it that they have open late and on Sunday too. Be careful with ordering the appetizers. The portions are so huge that you can be done with eating before you are getting your entree. You should go there with some people and ordering some stuff and share it. This way you can try a lot of stuff and enjoy the food.

The food was good, but not like "omg the best thai food I've had in my life" good. The portion was enough for two meals and more. While my experience at the restraunt was enjoyable. I found short thick black hair in the gaeng pak left over I took home........

I'm currently eating sala Thai leftovers. You can get good Thai AND sushi here and everything is consistently delicious and spiced exactly the way I want. I'm not too picky about my Thai takeout, but sala Thai is BY FAR my favorite Thai in Detroit, and it's most definitely the best sala Thai location I've eaten at to date (there's on in Oxford and one near royal oak, too).

(5)Anil P.
I go to this restaurant all the time. Recently quality has gone down big time. Rice quality is worst. They also increased the prices. I wouldn't recommend.
(1)Nikki C.
(4)Emine S.
(3)Anthony N.
Decent pad Thai, decent sushi (spicy salmon). Weird that they had sushi at a Thai restaurant. Good ambiance.
(3)D C.
I usually go between chicken pad thai and chicken fried rice at Thai restaurants, and both are good here. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. Love to come here for lunch meetings, booths are great for space for larger groups. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go browsing through Eastern Market.
(4)Michael C.
(4)William R.
(5)Lisa W.
(3)Angela B.
(5)Stacy M.
love the food, but can you please turn ON THE HEAT!?!?! it is always freezing in this place. bring your snowsuit, hat and fingerless gloves so you can try to enjoy your meal.
(3)Daniel E.
You bet.
(3)Roni L.
(4)Terence M.
(5)Kathren C.

I sware not worth the money i just paid. I'm really fucking disappointed but ill never go back again. Your dinner portion is fucked up. Take some home look at it and its not worth the money. Never going again. Never telling anyone to go there again. I didnt pay for a plate full oh juice or sauce whatever you call it. Straight bullshit you took a big shit on me fuck you
(1)Vinoth K.
We have been very hungry after roaming from morning so decided to have lunch and I found this one was near. I always like Thai food. Had pad Thai and pad pak. Amount of food was pretty generous. Both items were good. Probably I should asked for more spicy as I didn't feel much.
(4)Liz T.
(3)Elizabeth L.
(4)Tim W.
First time going to Sala Thai today. I had heard so many good things about the restaurant, so it was a no brainier during my time in Eastern Market. Upon arriving, the lobby was empty for about 5 minutes which left me wondering if I was supposed to seat myself or not. Once the cashier greeted me and took my order I received my food within like 6 minutes, which was good. I took the food back to a friend's boutique around the corner to chow before my next errand. Im sitting, I'm eating and there it was...about 1/4 of the way through lunch...A (Long) HAIR! It was splitting and had a bad orangish ombré which is what really almost made me earl! I called, was offered a remake or refund, but decided to make that decision upon going back to the restaurant . Upon my return I was treated like I was the inconvenience. Mr. Cashier barely looked at me and didn't even check inside my box to see if my story checked out. So, like any other unsatisfied patron I asked for a complimentary fountain drink. The "cashier" said that decision was outside of his power and I would have to speak to the owner the following day. Obviously over it...I was the bigger person and left. Needless to say, you won't see me at this trashy establishment again. (And I've had better Pad Thai in Royal Oak anyways)
(1)Saalai S.
(4)Elizabeth K.
(3)Donna A.
Amazing pad thai, ive had both the chicken and shrimp pad thai's and they were both great (although i think i like the shrimp better). Best I've ever had, no question.
(5)Phoebe J.
(1)Subu M.
They're sushi is good but the entrées are not up to par. Especially the one time they got my order wrong. I asked for the right dish but instead they gave it to me with a jar of chili pepper poured into it. Went home literally crying that day and never returned again. :(
(2)Carolyn E.

Stopped by after shopping in eastern market. E had the fresh rolls, a chicken curry, and a vegetable curry. All were delicious with a lot of flavor and spice.

I love Pad Thai and theirs is my favorite. It's not oily, noodles are cooked just right. Friendly service.

Good food, good service. Good Thai is hard to find, this place is always good.

(3)Matt A.
This is the most baller ass Thai spot on planet Earth, especially in Detroit. I wish I had more money so I could eat here for every meal that I consume.

I have been back many times and all is right with the world....My Favorite Thai place love the soup!
(5)Layan A.
Pretty delicious food. I like the drunken noodles, but the medium plus was waaay too spicy for me, even though I'm a fan of spicy food. Place is nice and staff is friendly.
(3)Lori K.
this place sucks!!
(1)Sara B.
(2)Anna G.
Nay. The foods I orders didn't taste like it. I.ve been to Thai for 2 months trip. And I love pretty much everything I've tried. However, when I found this place and craving for Thai foods . Got disappointed.

(1)Katie D.
(3)Nothing H.

(3)Debby J.
The last TWO times I got a takeout order from there, they messed up my order. The first time, they gave me mild when I ordered extra hot. This time, I ordered drunken noodles and got fried rice. I'm done with this place!!
(1)Zeid S.

(2)Mac N.

(4)Debbie Z.
(2)Natalie F.
(4)Jessica P.

(4)John B.
This place has really gone downhill. I don't go there anymore. Dining area is dirty and worn out. Prices are too high. Food is ok. Good parking. Wait staff can't speak English.
(2)tina w.
(1)David D.
(4)Sina M.
(4)Letao Z.
The food was good, but not like "omg the best thai food I've had in my life" good. The portion was enough for two meals and more. While my experience at the restraunt was enjoyable. I found short thick black hair in the gaeng pak left over I took home........
(2)Jacqueline G.
