This restaurant gets a well deserved five stars. It is one of the last two authentic Greek restaurants. I don't include Golden Fleece because their menu is so limited. They have a largest spinach pie i have ever seen, and their broiled fish, salmon or white fish, is easily a two person portion. No rinky dink servings here, closer to 10 ounces or more. The design is totally unique, three floors, open air. I have to say Annie is a huge draw, she really knows her drinks. She makes an amazing Spanish coffee. And she will keep your carry out on ice while you gamble, just don't forget to come back for it! Roasted potatoes, green beans and red sauce, probably too oily, but i eat here at least once a week. New Parthenon is the best greek food in the city, probably the state. Also, several tvs so you can catch the games.

This is by far my favorite restaurant. Make sure you ask for George. He is an above par server, he will met and exceed all your needs and expectations. They treat their guest like family here. I always feel loved and welcome as soon as I come through the door. Dishes that stand out to me are lamb chops, saganaki, grape leaves, and fried artichokes. They also have the best Greek salad I've ever tasted, I'm not sure if it's the fresh barrel feta cheese or their homemade dressing but it's the best salad ever. If you're a beer drinker make sure to try some Greek beer!

So, I've lived downtown for a year & a half now & I am definitely a picky eater! New Parthenon never fails. I eat here at least twice a week & never get sick of their delicious food. It is always cooked perfectly & fresh! My top 4 menu items are: 1. Lamb with Rosa Marina 2. Reganato with a side of roasted potatoes 3. Chicken meatballs 4. Veal or Chicken Lemonato (Please believe when I say that everything else on the menu is exceptional as well) Next, the entire staff is phenomenal. Each & everyone of them! They hustle, food comes fast & exactly how you ordered it, they are so polite & friendly, really makes for a great dining in experience! Not to mention they are the best OPA! flame throwers around! Star is my regular waiter he is awesome. Very attentive and fast. Always making sure everything is perfect before he brings it to the table. Yianni is also very friendly and always puts a smile on our face! Carry-out has always been good too! I have to say that Perry, in particular, has gone above & beyond to make sure every single thing is perfect from the moment we walk in the door until we leave.. EVERY SINGLE TIME! 5 stars in customer service! What a great guy with the BEST personality. He is one of the main reasons I keep coming back to Parthenon! Not to mention he always makes us laugh :) Other than that the place is always spotless. 5 stars on the cleanliness!

I hate to leave such a negative review but I really must. If you have stumbled into the New Parthenon and find yourself eating it is more than likely because Pegasus was jam packed. The food lacks the flavor and is by far of lower quality than it's less dated counterpart. New Parthenon is decorated like everything bad in a 1980s comedy.

I have never felt the need to leave a totally negetive review. Until now. THE FOOD: GROSS. Everything was just nasty. Nothing fresh. Saganaki was cold in the middle. Server brought another one quickly, but still not warm, let alone hot in the center.Tep, FLAMING CHEESE, cold in the center? I ordered the Vegetarian Trio: Combination of spinach cheese pie, vegetarian Moussaka, and vegetarian Pastitsio. it looked as though the food had been laying in a pan for a week and microwaved, sour sauce, canned mushy vegetables. Again all cold (Actually cold) in the center. Again the waiter had it reheated quickly, but again, still barely warm in the center...AAARRRGGGHHH. At this point I'm thinking, the heck with it, and decided not to eat anything for fear of food born illness. THE SERVICE: PROMPT is the best thing I can say. All of the waiters seemed to be engaged in some secret joke amongst themselves, I assumed cracking jokes about their guests. (I am in the service industry and I have a keen sense of these things, add the actual pointing at tables and laughing, I feel safe in my assumption). We were never offered drink refills, I was not asked if all was O.K after the re-heat of my food. Upon leaving, I was waiting for the rest of my group by the host stand, where the man working behind the stand was ignoring guests coming into the restaurant, because he was thumbing through his phone. When, who I assumed to be a manager asked him what he was doing and where was his neck tie, his response was F__k that tie and he walked away. Yep, sums up my experience. THE DINING ROOM: Dated, dirty service stations, smelly. I am in the restaurant business. I understand the difference between fresh food and canned, a bad shift and just not giving a crap. This is by far my worst experience...anywhere.... ever.

This 3 stAr review has nothing to do with the food that I received but the service. I was blown away when I heard the manager (Paul) frantically send the bartender away to go upstairs to do something. He took my order and I figured was just helping the bartender out. I have been in the service industry for over 16 years and have been a bartender for the last 10 of those years, so I was extremely taken aback when I saw the manager cash me out and put the tip I was giving the bartender who had returned by now, directly in his pocket. Last time I checked no matter what, managers DO NOT TAKE TIPS AWAY FROM THE STAFF!!! He wasn't behind the bar the whole time even. Managers make a higher wage than servers/bartenders, which is why they are not supposed to take tips. It even seemed to me like he was sending her away just so that he could get the tip. I now regret not waiting for the bartender to cash out. I gave less of a tip than I normally do although it was over 20% because I was in fear the manager would take the money and did not give me great service. I then spoke to the bartender about it and I got the feeling that this happens quite a bit from this manager. To me bad business all around and especially watching him stuff a tip in his pocket right in front of me. Not cool.

Went here on a whim on a Sunday evening. Not crowded at all and we were seated right away. We were seated at the same time as someone else who was extremely excited about her waiter...who was also our waiter. She apparently is a regular and he's her favorite... that instantly put us on the backburner. I should have been ready to give my drink order when he asked because it took him a good while to come back and take it. When he finally did, we were ready to give our dinner orders, too. I got the combination -- the eggplant lasagna deal, the baked macaroni and the spinach pie. It was all very good and the portions were plentiful. I had enough to take for lunch the next day. Anything we asked for, though, was either forgotten or it took some time to get it. The interior is very dated and was a bore to look at... but I guess it's supposed to have that "old world Greek" feel. I'm glad we went though, because it was different and somewhere I don't get to often.

Came here with family for a celebration. My dad is well-known by the owner and staff, so we had very nice service. I ordered the skordalia -- not at all authentic (definitely tasted mayo -- yuck), but tasty enough for a garlic-laden mezze. I also ordered an eggplant dip for the table which was pretty good, but again, not authentic like you might find in my new town of Astoria. My main dish, the Jimmy Salad, was excellent. Much like the Tommy Salad from Little Daddy's. I approve, and actually wish I could find something similar now that I'm living in NY.

Great geek food. Waiter was an older funny guy. Gave us the pitcher price instead of separate beer price. Fast service, great place. Will return we we come back to the D!!

Despite the low reviews we decided to check this place out due to a friend's recommendation. The servers seemed Arab and not Greek-not that this is an actual issue as still under the category of Mediterranean. The service was not good. A bunch of boys around and had to get our waiter's attention to refill our drinks and to reheat my cold entree (which they did with coriander leaves all wilted). :P Complimentary cold bread with butter. That usually signals something to me. No olive oil-I guess I should have considered Italian? ;) To be safe, since I wasn't feeling the place I decided to order the trip which consists of the spinach pie, the mosaka and the pastistio (macaroni cheese meat) dish. I wasn't sure what the husband was going to order so had started with the spanakopita. Three big triangles but seemed crushed on a platter of lettuce and tomato which was a little weird. My entree was good. I skipped the spinach pie since already had said spanakopita, the moussaka melts in your mouth! Very soft! The macaroni meat was also tasty. He ordered a chicken kabob (seemed like a souvlaki but I wasn't paying attention at that moment) with French fries. His French fries were steak fries. He claimed the chicken cube kabobs were flavorless/bland though from the looks was grilled a nice shade. It came with rice, peas and carrots in a tomato sauce. Would I come here again? No..seemed too cheap touristy. The interior feels like a fast food joint. Service was lacking and I didn't think the meal nor experience swept me off my feet. I'm a foodie with standards but for those drinking and wanting that quick touristy experience might indulge in such a location.

This place is a joke. Why are they still open? The food is absolutely disgusting, poor quality, and made me lose my appetite. Everything is dirty and sticky.

Have come here after a game not a big fan but it's not terrible. Service was the biggest downfall I think the waitress was having an off night screwed up our drinks and has to ask her multiple times for things...lamb was ok but a little bland. Flaming cheese good but how can you mess up flaming cheese lol

Food was so good. Syed was the best server ever. Knew the restaurant and the food. Perfect meal. Big part was Syed. Ask for him.

It used to be good. But they rushed us. The portion was small and Ricks kabob was "pre- cooked. Then finished on the grill. Not good at all way overpriced . Sad.... Another one bites the dust. The waiter said it was "the marinade. I beg to differ. He would have sent us back but the waiter never came back.. I will go someplace else next time I am in Greektown. Left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Traveling is like moving, or shall I say, I despise both especially when it's business not pleasure, with that said, being single, it gets lonely quite frankly so it's nice to get out of the hotel try out the local places. I love great food and I will give them my money not the overpriced, chains $$$ no way, I will patron the locally owned restaurants can get that anywhere. I took a walk and found this hidden gem. Great food, loved the bar area and they were so friendly, invited me in. I was hungry too, their menu is very diverse the name tells you it's Greek so I always ask for their recommendation, Grape leaves stuffed with beef, rice with lemon and another veggie all good it hit the spot. Baklava for desert, perfect. Although I didn't help my weight, it was refreshing. I'm a walker if it's close enough or take public transportation if convenient. I even drove here but it's a pain getting the car out etc. I prefer downtown for various reasons. Convenience! No traffic! Suburbs are boring and all close early even in a city like Detroit, Novi, Rochester Hills, Troy but loved Somerset!!! I really loved the decor very nostalgic with black and white photos of famous celebrities who have been there Danny Iello for one. The staff were superb felt very nice after a rough beginning in the suburbs. Don't be afraid to take a walk outside of the hotel that's how I found this wonderful place. Highly recommend and if I go back I will be sure to go there again.

Excellent food. Ordered the Reganato everytime and never been disappointed. Saganaki and Flaming Sausage are also a great app to start. Well deserved 5 Stars for this one.

The space is dated. The food was barely acceptable, and the service was horrible. When we got to the table, the table and the seats were still wet. Not just a little wet. we found out the hard way. We never did get our drink order. after waiting 15 minutes we finally had to call a waiter over. My pastitso was cold. My friend's order wasn't even the right dish even after he pointed at it on the menu. In a place where there are plenty of alternatives, I'm surprised it survives.

Gyros deluxe, great spinach pie. I must admit I ate the whole thing. I have to say I think this is my fave little spot in Greektown. It's smaller than most of the other restaurants, and there's a certain "quaintness". I like the gyros being roasted and sliced up front and the choice of high seats, standard tables or a counter. Service was attentive and efficient. You can get beers, I believe, but I had some hot tea that really hit the spot. I like to pick a spot near the door and watch the characters parade down Monroe. There's painting and music happening most nights on the streets outside and the bohemian atmosphere is cool and feels safe, though I would always keep my head up and not wander off the paths. You can really get your lamb on down here. Opah!

Not as happy this visit to this restaurant. We brought our ten year old daughter, the waiter didn't wait for her to come back from her trip to the bathroom to catch the cheese on fire and yell opa! I was the only one at the table. The food was not as hot this time. The gyro meat a little dry. The bread crust very hard and not edible. They are fast though. I would like to try another place down here next time.

This was an absolutely HORRIBLE experience. The host sat us and a waiter ran up to the table, asking what we wanted to drink, seeming unnecessarily rushed. We ordered two drinks and waters. He ran to the bar to make them and had them back to the table quickly. He also got us water. Completely distracted, he rushes us into ordering. I begin to say what I want... Saganki and a bowl of lemon rice soup. He cuts me off as I'm ordering my soup and... I shit you not Yelpers... he literally runs away! Not "walks quickly"... but SPRINTS away from our table to the back of the restaurant. ... I don't know if my soup order intimated him, but he ran away and we didn't see him for the rest of the night. We were completely dumbfounded. A waitress came up to the table and said she'd take our order. I asked "Where did the other guy go? He just ran away." and she replied, like it was no big deal "I'm not sure where he went, but I'll take care of you." She said she knew what I ordered because Forrest Gump told her and she took Jake's order. Our food took about 25 minutes to get to us. We never got our flaming cheese. I asked the waitress where it was after Jacob got his burger and she said the other guy didn't tell her I ordered it. FFFFUUUUU They didn't charge us for our drinks. They shouldn't have charged for Jake's burger because it was tasteless and a waste of money, as he only ate 1/4 of it. The server never asked us why he didn't eat the other 3/4 of his meal, just took our plates and left our bill, reassuring us that she wasn't charging us for our drinks because of the flaming cheese mishap. It was just a shitty experience. Nor our waitress or the host asked us how our meal went. It's obvious looking at the servers here don't care about "service" but rather taking orders and bringing the food... that's it. This place is a joke.

Three of us for dinner. We started with the appetizer combo, and I ordered a Greek salad with anchovies. The other couple had soup and the triple combo. More than we could finish. Decent food but nothing special in my view. The bill w/ tip was $62, as we didn't drink alcohol with dinner. The saganaki cheese served at the neighboring table was a much bigger portion than I usually get at home. Lots more fire too.

  • Rebecca H.

Not the cleanest place I have ever eaten... The service was bad, very brisk waiter who walked away from me before I could order a drink, at least my husband got a word in edgewise and got a beer. The food was ok, the best part was the saganaki, but the table next to us also had an order so the waiter lit both of our cheese dishes in front of them. BORING. The sausage was pretty darn tasty, but did not make up for the rice and peas that came with our dish, not good. Then the worst thing a restaurant could do in my opinion... have a dirty bathroom. Never going back here, couldn't pay me to.

I like this place for late night donuts. They cook them to order and they are covered with honey and chopped nuts. So yummy. I am glad that someone told me about them.

I went on my first date with my husband of 20 years at the Old Parthenon. It was a night so exciting, we were dressed to the nines, drinking Dom, eating delicious small plates of marinated artichoke hearts, calamari, oysters Rockefeller and then the feast of Greek specialties that I had never tried before. I was in love with the man, the food, the champagne and at that moment I knew my future. I felt so alive. 25 years after that first date the scenery has changed, but the magic is still there. Fall in love at Greektown, it will serve your future traditions so well. The food is divine if you aren't looking for love, at least let the Greek food nourish your heart and soul. It is unlike any other. Three is a secret ingredient that allows dreams to come true, and those dreams last a lifetime,

I have eaten here over a dozen times and have had really great experiences and my food has always been consistent and yummy. I prefer to go here over the other Greek restaurants in Greek town. I order the tzatziki, deep fried artichokes and saganaki with pita bread for an appetizer almost every time and I love it. I recently tried the lamb meatballs which were wonderful. I also get the lamb chops sometimes and they come out delicious. I have noticed that it is hard to compare Greek restaurants to each other in Greek town due to the fact that they all cook things a little differently

I have NEVER had such a bad time at a restaurant. We ordered starters of Spanakopita, (I had to take it out of my mouth., it was stale soggy and made me want to throw up), and a sampler plate and the Taramasalata was revolting. When we tried to cancel our main course, and get the bill a manager came over and instead of apologizing that the starter was so super horrendous he got angry and offensive. The only thing that saved us was the waiter being super kind, I hope he gets a better job somewhere else, he was the only thing good there.

It really was just OK. The best thing was the flaming cheese, after that, oh boy. My pepsi had a very odd taste, maybe like all the detergent wasn't out of the cup yet, idk, but not tasty. I got the lamb w/ roasted potatoes, looked ok but definitely could've been better. Lamb seemed a little fatty and I've had better lamb, potatoes at first bite were OK but the taste after that was so overwhelming, like they were marinated in vinegar. Waiter forgot my wine and remembered after the bill...gee thanks. First time in Detroit, I think my next time, I'll try somewhere else.

This is great greek food. the service here is pretty awesome and the people here are nice. My favorite is the Saginaki, they serve it by lighting it on fire an screaming OOOOOPAAA, it gets even better if you are with a large group and they light like on fire at a time. The food is really good Greek food, they have dishes for people who are vegetarian and for people who aren't. I really like this place, and would definitely go back.

I'm very surprised by the poor reviews there. Other than Pegasus, this is my Greektown destination when it comes to food. The portions are good and delicious. I've never had a single thing that wasn't good. The place is clean, it is dated as the building is pretty old, but that doesn't make the food bad. Saganakis are tasty and the grape leaves are fantastic.

Since our favorite Greek restaurant was demolished to make room for a new "walkway" to a parking lot... we had to find another to replace it. Someone said to try the New Parthenon and we went for lunch. The inside is really nice and the different levels give it an interesting artistic vibe. Water was brought out soon after we were seated and actually tasted clean. I ordered a cup of the addicting lemon rice soup and it was quickly brought out with our drinks. I barely got into half of the soup when our food arrived! My boyfriend got the gyro, and I had the veggie trio. The spinach pie was amazing, it tasted like they added some grape leaves to the mix and it gave it a great bitter salty taste. The moussaka was alright, as was the pastitsio. The bechamel on top was overcooked and chewy though, not fluffy and creamy. Also the noodles were a bit dry and crunchy around the edges. Overall it was a nice meal and the prices weren't bad at all.

This is my favorite Greektown restaurant. The food is always good and the service is as well and fast. The restaurant is pretty big so there's never been a wait and they can pretty easily accommodate large parties. It can be a little on the pricey side, but that wouldn't deter me from coming here. On my most recent visit, I got the flaming cheese, and the Parthenon special trio (moussaka, pastitsio and spinach pie) and my husband got the gyro platter. My meal was pretty big and I ate about half and had some of my husband's gyro meat - all was delicious, hot and delivered fast (perhaps it had just been warmed up as some other reviewers suggest, but it tasted good to me). They also have a full bar and give you a bread basket when you sit down full of yummy thick pieces of bread. I've never had a bad experience here and will definitely be back.

ok, so its a bit of flash. who cares - they light the cheese on fire! New Parthenon is a great place to take a group in Greektown. They have a good selection, and the lamb is fantastic. If you let the waiter order family style, you will get a great assortment and everyone will be happy. and the cheese - they light it on fire!

I'm being generous when I said it's O.K. It started when I asked the front reception if they had lamb kabobs as the menu said "meat" she said yes so we came in. They did not it was chicken or pork ( how could she not know?) The place was loud with talk and music, the tables look like a cafeteria and we sat on the third level so the floor shook as people came up and down the stairs. The flaming cheese was burnt , the calamari was tasteless and my grape leaves were tough and the egg lemon sauce had no lemon flavor to it. Overall this is a place for the broke/drunk casino players only

The service has been really good and accommodating. They seem to push people in and out like a factory. That is why I think the food is suffering. I feel they microwave a lot of food because of the quickness the food is brought to the table. I have had spinach pies that have a soft and steamy texture that only can be accomplish by using plastic wrap and a plate straight to the hot box. There is a dish that is called Garides Ladolemono and consist of sautéed shrimp with olive oil in a lemon garlic sauce. This dish is the worst dish I have had in the last year. The shrimp had the weirdest texture I have ever tasted. The sauce was a pre-made mixture that most defiantly came from a powder package from the food distributer. This sauce could quite possibly be the worst sauce every created. The restaurant is classic when it comes to the bread and slimy floors that are typical of all the other greek restaurants. The place has a lively and an outdated Mediterranean feel with the painted blue sky walls and white pillars that simulate greek structures. I really want to like this place because of the service and I actually like the Saganaki cheese but, some of the food is really horrible. If you plan on visiting Greek Town your money is better spent elsewhere.

I went to the New Parthenon about 6 years ago after a Lions Game. We were seated at a dimly-lit table almost under the stairway. After waiting what seemed like forever for a waiter, we were finally given water and our order was taken. One of the water glasses had something disgusting in it - looked like part of a rodent (unfortunately, my friend actually DRANK from the glass before discovering it). Horrified, we told the waiter - who promptly got rid of the glass. We talked to the waiter and management - TO NO AVAIL. Our meals came out and we opted against eating them - and the management would not even CONSIDER modifying the bill. It was SO NASTY and we were treated with such disrespect, you could never pay me enough to eat there. Since, we have found that it is likely what was in the glass was a moldy ice cube. Still, less than comforting! I mentioned early that this was not recently, but to this day I have no interest in ever returning, Eww, and shame on them for not handling the situation well.

What an old, outdated, and dirty dive. I was uneasy the minute I walked in. The place looked like 1985, smelled like an old person's house, and had a visible crud-slick throughout. I made the mistake of using the restroom. Let's just say I've seen cleaner bathrooms in a college bar at 2 a.m. The waiter seemed irritated and angrily shouted orders in his language to the kitchen and other servers. He wasn't very prompt either which was ridiculous since it was 3 pm on a Thursday and we were 1 of the 5 total tables of customers. I ordered the chicken gyro platter with rice. The rice was bland and tasted like it was cooked 3 days ago and reheated. The chicken had some flavor but nothing to write home about. The pita with tzatziki sauce was decent so that's all I ate (for $14). Even my diet Pepsi didn't taste good. All of the Greek restaurants in Greek Town look dumpy. What happened to these places? I remember going downtown back in the day for delicious opa at Pegasus and Nikki's. I don't remember the restaurants looking so old and depressing. What a bummer - no good places to go for Greek food anymore.

Pizza Papalis and Pegasus were packed (no surprise there), so my Dad, brother and I decided to try the "new" Parthenon. Let me just say, I have been a waitress for 6 years and this place was atrocious. We were seated immediately (because no one was there - which should've been our first sign). The table was sticky and dirty and the table next to us sat with food all over it for the entire course of the meal, with workers walking past it several times. The waiter was the WORST I have ever experienced in my life. Didn't introduce himself, or ask how we were. Abruptly said: "what drinks do you want?" and before we could even finish he was off in a flash. I don't know why he was in such a rush considering there were four tables in the whole restaurant, and ours was his only one. Then came time for the food order.... again "what are you eating?" and before any of us could finish our sentence he was gone. The food comes: he might as well have thrown the plates at us because my Dad's pastitsio (which looked like &*%%) fell over and he didn't even do anything. He just pushed it towards my Dad. I ordered a village salad, without dressing, and grilled chicken. My salad arrived doused in dressing, and no chicken. I asked him to take it back and he was SO rude, and probably spit in my next dish. Finally he brings out another one with chicken that was raw in the middle, and the feta was gone. I asked for the feta and he again raced off before I could have a chance to say anything else. I was trying not to be a pain in the a$$ but DAMN! Needless to say, he was terrible and it made the experience so bad I will NEVER go back. Reading these other posts I should've just stood in line at Pizza Papalis. I will remember that next time.

I enjoy the saganaki with the shouting "opa!" great atmosphere. I had a casserole with rosa marina and lamb with saganaki cheese on top. It was quite good! served hot. It had a great tangy sauce with it. You can't go wrong with the overall fun component here--Greektown casino is across the street, Astoria bakery nearby, and cheap beers make for a great evening.

Easily the best OPA in Detroit's Greektown, the guys light the roof on fire and yell OPA loud and long enough for the folks in Windsor to hear it! Multi-floor setting with hop to it waitstaff that knows their stuff. Great authentic Greek dishes. You can't go wrong here.

This place is like Pegasus improved. Better service, better staff and hospitality, better decor, and you don't feel rushed to eat and get outta there. I like. The Greek/Mediterranean food here is pretty on point and made with a little extra attention to detail. The menu is diverse and priced just a slight notch above Pegasus - but that price different is more than worth it considering this is the better place to dine for you and your friends if you want a slightly more memorable dining experience. If you want the best compromise between not breaking the bank for a comfortable, courteous and memorable meal with a group or with a companion in Greektown - this place is your all around winner. If you are in a rush - go to Pegasus. If you want a cheap & dirty but tasty diner - go to Plaka's.

I'm new to Greek cuisine. I've tried it a few times in California, but it never knocked my socks off. It seems in Michigan, every restaurant offers the standard Greek fare and its been lousy, frankly. Enter "New Parthenon"... Went there for lunch today and I am now a fan. I don't know about the bad reviews. It was very clean and the food was very tasty and the service was great. I'll be a repeat customer.

I went back to New Parthenon Restaurant over the summer. The Greektown area is a fun place for a stroll after a game or when guests are in town and typically about half the time when I am down there I check out New Parthenon. Back in the day, when I was a little less strict about attempting vegetarianism/veganism I would love the gobs of fried cheese I would get here as well as the spinach pie. This time around, being a big more picky (no cheese since most cheeses are not truly vegetarian), I found the menu a little more limiting. The service was the same --- we were pleasantly ignored for most of the meal, followed by a few quick "hope the food is ok" visits by the server. It was actually fine because my friend and I were having a good conversation (except that our throats were dry since the water had run out, and when the waiter missed that!!). Otherwise the food was pretty good. Another Yelp review cited cold food and that has happened to me in the past (twice with the moussaka). It's not really a place where they do much about that but to take your food back and warm it up. This place was packed and busy when we were there. It has a bit more of a diner type vibe but we were seated in the loft like part and that was pretty nice for ambience. There was a decent selection of vegetarian items but it's basically standard for the area. This time around, I mixed a few of the appetizers and had a nice variety of food that filled me up for the night. I think that may be the way I do it again if I'm back there in the future.

Meh. I had seen a piece on Greektown on the food network years ago and was very excited to try this out. What I got was large portions of greek diner food that was all pretty good, but definitely nothing special. The Saganaki was good though. Maybe it's unmet expectations, but I wouldn't go out of my way again...

This place is not good. Having never been, I kind of assumed (I don't know why) that it would be about the same quality of food as Pegasus across the street. Let me just say now, it's not. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Parthenon is to Pegasus what Rio Wraps is to Taco Bell-- both are Americanized, slightly bland knockoffs of traditional ethic food, but the latter are very tasty, while the former are... eh. I mean, how good can knockoffs of knockoffs possibly be? Parthenon also has some serious cleanliness problems, which is a deal-breaker for me (unless I'm eating street food in Tijuana). When I went, the bathrooms were worse than your average "Starbucks at 8:00pm" cringe fest, and the floors seemed to be covered with a thin coat of perma-grime. Lastly, a lot of the food didn't taste particularly fresh. I think that to grind through the volume of customers that they want (the place has 200 seats easy), they pre-prepare and compose a lot of the dishes. Which means that when they come out, everything just seems a little dry, wilted and sad. All in all, I won't be going again. Next time, if the wait at Pegasus is too long, I'll just have an all-Astoria Pastry Shop dinner: cupcakes, ice cream and eclairs.

This Greek restaurant is not that good.... ....I was very disappointed. Let me just say there are alot of can openers in the kitchen. The service was slow, the server was not very attentive. But most important the food is tourist quality, the lamb chops were ok not much flavor, we ordered the sea bass and when it was served it smelled rotten it ruined our entire meal. We called the server over and he took the dish away and apologized. How could the chef and server not smell the foul order of the bad seafood. Be very careful dining here, I found the food not to be very fresh and the restaurant itself is not that clean. Never again.

This is a very dirty restaurant. Lots of grime on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Appeared to have mold growing around the ceiling vents. Table was wiped, but not well. Glasses and silverware were dirty. It was a constant job keeping the flies away from the meals. Grossed my poor wife right out and she wouldn't eat her dinner. I had the Pastitso and it was okay, but it was nothing to rave about. The Saganaki I enjoyed in Chicago's greektown was more flavorful and spread much better on bread than this restaurant's version. In a nutshell we were very disappointed and don't recommend this restaurant.

Good food. Fast service. The place is always crowded so it is noisy, but well-staffed so they keep the tables clean --- and close to each other so not the best place for a romantic evening. The octopus and scardallia are great!

While in town for a few days I checked this place out. The grape leaves where not very good, they tasted as if they'd been sitting in a fridge for too long and were too oily. I ordered the gyro platter over rice and it was good, not the best, but good nonetheless. We also had the flaming cheese appetizer, which was very popular, and were pleased with it. Their bread basket was fresh and very soft. Service was good, decor a bit cheesy.

Arranged for ta birthday dinner for 13 people. We had a nice little room upstairs that worked very well for us. We had sagnaki appetizer, greek salad and the manager created "family style" platters of lamb, rice, vegetables etc. The food was good. I was under the impression that we were getting lamb CHOPS - wrong, we got shanks in a tomato sauce. Still good, but not exactly what I had in mind. The vegetables were good and there was plenty of food, but the flavors were a little bland. They also let us bring in a cake and did not charge extra for serving it. which was great. Bottom line...we all had fun and enjoyed the celebration. Food was good (not great) but plentiful and not exactly what we thought we were getting. Service was good, but not excellent. I would give another star, BUT the place was grimy and the bathrooms very dirty. The grout between the tiles was disgusting. They need to clean the place up....can't imagine what the kitchen looks like.... and sharpen up service to get 4 stars. Have a better use of spices and flavors to get 5.

Ugh. I'll quote so many yelpers and say, "I wanted this place to be better." It was just lame - food, service and ambiance. John and I went, on a whim, with another couple to The New Parthenon tonight; sort of a bad decision as Autorama is happening right now at Cobo, so the place was jammin'. We only had about a 20 minute wait - so that wasn't bad. We were seated at the top level, which afforded a nice view. However everything from here on was frustrating. We waited a solid ten minutes for a server to approach us. Once she appeared we ordered soft drinks, saganaki and a round of Ouzo shots. About ten+ minutes later we got the soft drinks, ten minutes after that we got saganaki, and never did we get the Ouzo we ordered. Two of us got the "combination plate," and the other two got the "parthenon trio." The combination plate had spinach pie, rice and peas, moussaka, a lamb shank and a stuffed grape leaf - all piled on the plate like a KFC famous bowl. Everything tasted the same - mushy, bland and similarly spiced. The only shining moment of the dish was the spinach pie, which was crisp, fresh and light. The lamb meat was fork tender, but tasted like everything else on the plate. I had a bite of the macaroni dish on my husband's plate (can't remember what that's called), and that also tasted like everything else. The server was very scarce - we ordered refills and they never came. She noticed on her next trip back that we hadn't gotten them, and we got them about ten minutes after that. Overall I'd say it's just lame. The place is so loud, hectic and busy, the servers handling the saganaki are sometimes a little too close with the fire and there's hosts and managers running around yelling things at people. There's one server who yells "OPA" for a solid long, drawn-out 15 seconds that just takes too long and will interrupt your conversation. John's answer to the question as to whether we'd return: "NOPA"

For what has become a rather lackluster district in Detroit, this place alone makes a trip to The Greek Market worth it. Went here with a large group (16 people) and we had a great time. Server was fast, extremely friendly, and made sure everyone was well taken care of. We decided t go with a group meal setup, and weren't dissapointed. Within 10 minutes of being seated we had our drinks, salad, and appetizer course in front of us. Service was attentive on getting refills, removing plates, and brough out the main course in good order. The food itself was very nicely done. Saw a review saying the salad they had was poorly done and bland... must have been an odd case since MY salad was very well done, had a nice dressing, and tasted absolutely delicious. Had lamb chops and ribs, along with a suite of side dishes ranging from chicken and rice, beans, and potatoes as well. The meats were excellently done, extremely tender, and absolutely nobody left the table without being completely stuffed. Great service, great food, and good "Opa" and flame from the 15+ person meals...it was just a great experience. This area of Detroit may get a little overshadowed by the casino, but this place will now be the reason I venture over there.

Nice place but not what I would call ''authentic''. The food was good bt nothing really special although I must admit, the avgolemono soup was outstanding. The waiter screaming oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopa as the prety crappy saganaki was burning was a nice touch (not really). The cheese was lit so long, it was more like a milkshake than yummy saganaki. Decent meal but nothing I would go out of my way for.

My mother and I stopped in this past weekend after a trip to Belle Isle, and overall I would say that I'd have to give New Parthenon only three stars. We were seated fairly quickly, and I would say that overall the service was pretty ok. Had saganaki as an appetizer (of course), and I really wasn't all that impressed with it. I've certainly had better. Entree-wise, I had the octopus in wine sauce and my mother had the moussaka. My dish was great, actually. The octopus was not at all tough (as it is wont to be) and the sauce it was in was pretty darn good. My mother's moussaka was initially served (apparently) lukewarm at best, but after it was heated up a bit more she really loved it. In short, I wouldn't be opposed to stopping in again, exhausting any other preferable alternatives.

I know most have their favorite restaurant in Greektown (usually here or Pegasus), but I've got to say that I like New Parthenon better. The restaurant is huge and I like the atmosphere and constantly hearing "Opa!" I wouldn't come here if you want a quiet place to eat, but if you want a fun place with good Greek food, I would recommend coming here!

I often get asked if I'm Greek. I always wonder where that comes from, because lots of different countries have white guys that tan well with dark hair. And then when I'm out to dinner with friends, I realize their assumptions may come from the fact that I'm an absolute sucker for all things Mediterranean. I've been eating at New Parthenon for years. I go to this particular restaurant for a few specific dishes. I love the Veal Limonata, and I'm of the belief that NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE in Detroit does their lamb better than the New Parthenon. It's amazing, incredibly tender, moist and melts in your mouth. Their Gyros are fabulous, but I prefer the Saganaki (flaming) cheese served in Pegasus as opposed to the offering here. Grape leaves are well done. The Mousaka is very flavorful and you won't find a better Greek Burger (ground beef, pepper rings, feta cheese and Gyro seasonings) in the area. New Parthenon has more kitschy decor than any of the other Greek restaurants on the strip. It's literally like walking through a maze after you visit the bathroom, which can be sort of fun, albeit frustrating at times. There are multiple levels of seating which offer interesting views of the Greektown strip and make for prime people watching. The waitstaff here are wonderful. They always make you feel at home, really know the menu backwards and forwards and are very comfortable with adjusting to food allergies and special orders. Does it look like parts of the restaurant are ready to cave in at a moments notice? You bet. Does it have its dishes that are misses? Absolutely. However, there are so few negatives about eating here because it just may be some of the best Greek food you'll ever have the pleasure of enjoying.

Huge place on lively Monroe St. There's something like 4 levels, which is nice on a busy night as there should usually be seating. The gyro meat is well seasoned and tasty, if a little bit dry. The saganaki is delicious, and the flaming show when they light in on fire seemed to be happening at tables every 5 minutes or so. This made for a festive atmosphere, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. We also split a bottle of Greek red wine, which was very good and great that they had so many Greek options on the menu.

I'm not kidding when I say I'd choose to go hungry over eating at the New Parthenon Restaurant. The food: disgusting. We had a gyro sandwich, spinach pie, macaroni & cheese and an eggplant thingy. All of them were very yucky, particularly the latter 3 dishes. No exaggeration--the worst Greek food I have ever had. Period. On the bright side, the food didn't make me sick. Thanks for that. The Place: very dirty. Look up at the ceiling, it's super dirty. I have no idea why there are so many positive reviews of the New Parthenon Restaurant on Yelp. I really don't. And I'm a little pissed because those reviews persuaded me to try this place while I was in town for a show last weekend. What gives? If this place really is considered good Greek food in Detroit, avoid all Greek food in Detroit.

Very bland and boring Greek Salad. Ordered it with roasted lamb, which was actually cold. Folks, lamb is very fatty and eating chunks of cooled fat with a salad ain't the most appetizing thing in the world. Most tasteless dressing ever. Interestingly enough, two other people across the restaurant sent their salads back while I was there. Why, I don't know. Maybe cause they just sucked.

I've eaten here twice and both times I left feeling satisfied and very happy. The first time that I went I had the veal limonata. The meat was very tender, and the creamy lemon sauce gave it a nice flavor. The second time I had a gyro. Now, most people think that gyros are something that you eat at Coney Islands and are not real Greek food. I thought this, too, which is why I hesitated before ordering. I really didn't want to order a gyro in Greektown. But, I had a strong gyro craving that wasn't going away, and it was there on the menu, so I bit the bullet and seized the opportunity. Boy, am I glad I did. That gyro was like none I had ever had before. The lamb was the most tender and flavorful I've experienced - really there's no words to describe this sandwich. So, its impossible to go wrong with this place, but my best recommendation is to order the gyro. Its the best decision I ever made.

After the wings game, we took the people mover over to Greektown. I'm a big gyro fan, so I was looking forward to checking out the scene. . The first place we looked at the menu was the New Parthenon which looked a little expensive for what I was expecting. We ended up choosing the New Parthenon because the Red Wings Coach walked in, and we figured if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for us. We were seated pretty quickly. The bread that kicked off the meal was pretty ordinary, but we were all really hungry, so we devoured it. Most of us got gyros which were pretty tasty, but Ayaz did order the kebob which was not what he was expecting. He sent it back and got a gyro as well. A couple of us ordered cokes that were not refilled....not sure if this place charges by the glass? Overall, the food was good but it was a bit expensive for a gyro. Next time I go back, hopefully I'll have some time to walk around a bit and check out the scene.

Although the people working at this place are not Greek (says a Greek friend I took along with me), you would never notice. It feels incredibly authentic and the food is mouthwatering. Whenvever I go with a group of people we order a bunch of different things and ask for extra plates so that we can try a bit of everything. I haven't ever eaten anything here that i have disliked in any way. The servers are always smiling and joking with you and everything is always brought to the table in a timely manner.I do highly suggest skipping dessert here though and trotting over to Astoria instead.

As a former Detroiter, this is a place I love to visit when I come back. This is my favorite place to go in Greektown!! As others have mentioned, the starting dish is the flaming cheese. Then of course the Lamb ... Now a tradition to visit ...

The Parthenon is one of the few places I can't leave town without revisiting. A trip back to Detroit without a gyro plate, fries and hummus from here is a trip I don't want to have to make. The restaurant is a little kitschy with the in-your-face Greek decor, but I wouldn't want to give that up, it only adds to the ambiance. Everything I've ordered here is perfect, don't forget to experience the flaming cheese, OPA! And after dinner, I usually head next door to the bakery for some ice cream and after-dinner pastry.

Service: Seated right away. That was the only fast thing that happened. Received some water after about 20 minutes. The waiter came to take our food order after about half an hour. I actually began to wonder if we were at one of those restaurants where the waiter is a jerk on purpose. No drink order. We put that in with our meal order. Then one of our drinks wasn't served and it took at least 10 minutes to get the waiters attention. Food: I was honestly stunned at how horrible the food was. I am not a picky eater. I am fairly easy-going. My swordfish steak was dry and overcooked and lacked any spicing at all. I stole my moms lemon to try to make it more appetizing, and I failed. The green beans that came with the meal were swimming in grease and tomato and looked completely unappetizing. The only saving grace on my plate was a plain looking peeled sliced in half boiled potato. It actually tasted really nice. My husband had the lamb. Both of us agreed that an OnCor frozen meal had better tasting meat in a nicer gravy. I will not go back. For the price, I am positive I can find something that tastes better in any different restaurant..

This has to be one of the worst restaurants I have ever been too. The group that I was with walked in and questioned right away if we should stay. We only stayed because everyone told us you can't go wrong in Greektown. The service was slow and rude. I especially did not like the owner eyeballing us the entire time. The food was ok until it came back up a few hours later. I ended up with food poisoning after we ate here. I was sick for two days and my friends had less harsh stomach problems. I would steer away from here as much as possible.

The worst food and service I have ever had in my 47 years!! Wouldn't eat here again even if it were free!! We went here on Saturday 2/26/11 at 7:30pm we expected a wait and went to the bar on the lower level for a drink while we waited. We should have paid for our drinks and went somewhere else but we thought the server in the bar area was just overwhelmed. That was not the case!! The server in the bar, the server at the table, the manager running around yelling at everyone!! Food bad, Service bad, Management bad!! Too bad Greek Town is not what I remember!!

Best greek since they tore down new hellas. Always there on the weekends they know us by now. Always treated like family and always taken care of. Pegasus isnt worth the hassle with all the casino traffic and really slow service. Having grown up around greeks I can say this food isnt all knockoffs as some say (only if your getting a cheese burger). Some of the wait staff is slow but our regular young lady on the third level doesnt even need to take our drink order at this point, and she is always up to date on which vendors they have changed to let us know if things could possibly taste different (which pays off when you are eating octopus) and gladley offered to refund if I didnt care for it.

While the service was highly attentive, the food was disgusting and I felt like I was eating in a dirty public bathroom. The ceiling was wet and moldy, the lighting a dingy green, and the wall we were pressed against was splattered with food crumbs. I would've left after seeing that but we had already ordered. I had the vegetarian trio ($14.50): spinach pie, macaroni casserole and moussaka. Everything tasted the same - like a slab of lukewarm ricotta and feta cheese. The phyllo crust on the pie was so rubbery I couldn't cut it with my knife - it was probably microwaved. To add insult, everything was covered in a tomato sauce with canned green beans and peas. So basically, it was like eating over-priced microwaved Greek-diner food.

On a trip to detroit to visit a friend we went downtown to show me around and of course the question of... What do we want to eat came up? Well, as i ask, what is good around here? So she said we should look in greektown and she recommended this place. We were not dissapointed in the least. Since, i am still a novice at eating greek food, she helped me with the menu and told me of a few things i should try so i had the trio, featuring spinach pie, baked eggplant and pastitso. It was very tasty and since i was never a fan of spinach, now i am. Wow, and the flaming saganaki was very cool and delicious, along with the lamb. I will want to come back here when i come back to Detroit!

This review is based on the forced consumption of one dish on two separate occassions. The first time I went here, I ordered the vegetarian moussaka and thought it was pretty decent had the bottom of the serving not been so incredibly burned. I ate it, because I was hungry and it was not a cheap dish. I suppose, I could have sent it back but did not. Tonight, I somewhat inadvertently ventured into New Parthenon again. I remembered the moussaka being good (except for the blackened underbelly of it). I ordered it again and was again disappointed. This time the cook pulled it from the oven before baking it to a crisp. Unfortunately, I think it may have been a little underdone this time, which helped me figure out that the potatoes used in the dish were in fact frozen wedge fries. Seriously, if I am paying $12 bucks for a dish, I do not want it stuffed with chilled fries from the grocers' freezer. Likely the peas and green beans were picked up on the same trip. I am not well versed in the particulars of greek food, but my assumption is that this does not measure up. The bathroom was pretty dirty as well.

Went for lunch the other day. I love Greek and after my very disappointing dinner last week at Laikon, I figured why not try this one. The waiter was a total jacka@@ and if I had to judge the entire experience without his attitude I would have given this place 5 stars. While I am used to the west coast style of serving the stuffed grape leaves warm, I am coping with this part of the country serving them cold. Not sure which I prefer yet. The gyro platter was simply wonderful. Enough lamb for two gyros if you wanted. The lamb was tender yet crisp on the roasted side: perfection. I will go back for dinner soon to see if the quality spans more than one meal.

Good appetizers (saganaki, Loukaniko, tzatziki) but the lamb shanks were tough and the server was very abrupt. Try another place in Greektown.

After visiting the amazing Avedon exhibit at the DIA my friends and I decided on dinner in Greektown. Choosing a Greek restaurant from the line up always seems such a daunting task, like selecting a favorite Joan Rivers movie. . . The last time I was faced with this decision I ended up at Pegasus, mostly because I like neon winged horses. The food was okay, service was interesting--nothing really amazing one way or another. Tonight we chose the New Parthenon. New Parthenon has really large Grecian statues and a couple different levels of dining; the bar is tucked under a staircase. We were sat right away but they failed to ask about a smoking preference. . . I can't wait until May. Naturally, they sat us in smoking. We started the meal with a bottle of Greek wine and saganaki, because nothing screams fun like fromage flambé! For dinner I ordered the Special Vegetarian Trio which had Spinach Pie, Pastitso, and Moussaka, all of which were quite good, dare I say better than Pegasus'. Maybe I was just under the influence of the giant Poseidon wall mural--can you blame me, there's a mermaid with a conch! And if you look up there's a random felt Jesus framed just chilling. I am always puzzled by presentation because for the most part the food uses a Chef Boyardee color palette--my dinner tonight was garnished with green beans and peas. I made the statement this evening that I think the three choices work well together, you have the nutmeg, tomato, and eggplant fun Moussaka, noodle-rific Pastisto, and sassy Spanakopita--ne'er such an exciting trio since Charlie's Angels. The menu was pretty large and there was a huge range of traditional Greek favorites and some standard fare. . . I think I saw Fettuccine Alfredo on the menu. They also had baby octopus. Octopi kind of fascinate me but also creep me out--I don't think I would want to eat one, let alone several. Maybe if I ate meat and could put ketchup on it? Or nacho cheese? Would Poseidon smile upon that? Service was very attentive though the wine wasn't presented in a traditional fashion--I didn't eve get to smell a cork. The saganaki was also not extinguished with lemon, instead it was just left to keep on burning, an eternal flame. Dinner was now three hours ago and I am still beyond full. So the big question: Why not five stars? I guess it might have to be with Greektown being too pricey. . . but that's not restaurant specific. Hm. I am doubting my rating. . . Maybe for a dinner I'd rather have smaller portions with a side dish or something. I guess I would have liked to not sit in between two smoking tables too. Maybe it's just not the best I ever had but it was better than the Pegasus for me. I wonder it is the best I have had? I don't know, but I would return.

This place hosted a rehearsal dinner for a wedding I was attending. It was delicious. I think their salad is one of the best Ive ever had. Saganaki was awesome and the lambchops were superb. We got sides of green beans and peas which were great too.

This was a GREAT experience all around. Food was great, wine was great and the service was great too! Flaming cheese was fun, although I have to admit at first when there was a screaming man beside my table it was a tad embarrassing. My boyfriend and I split the vegetarian trio. It was amazingly tasty and SO MUCH FOOD! We both ate too much and still took about a third of it home. The restaurant itself seems a bit of a maze, not in that its hard to figure your way around it, but that its set up in a somewhat eclectic way. It was nice and allowed for relative privacy. The only drawback was there was a TV on... maybe two... and set to football. Naturally my boyfriend got all involved in watching football at one point... I hate football. All in all, we plan to go back for sure! PS: Park in the free parking garage at Greektown Casino... it just makes sense.

I've been here a handful of times, and although I don't eat Greek food aside from the occasional gyro from Coney Island, I can honestly say this is one of the better places to get it. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks on the inside and the service is always friendly. The only thing that I can gripe about is the atmoshpere; although the food was good and the service was just as good, I didn't really feel 100% comfortable dining here. When all's said and done, I wouldn't hesitate to dine here again.

I'm Greek so I'm really fussy about authentic Greek food served in a restaurant. We just had a wonderful lunch there. We had Saganaki for an appetizer and it was perfect. The lunch menu is reasonable and has great variety. We had the Pastitsio and Lamb Youvetsi (wich is lamb with a red sauce and orzo pasta). The pastitsio portion was huge and perhaps the best I ever had. The lamb was excellent too. Our total bill was only $35 (only had water) I'll come back again!

Opah! A great find in the heart of Greek Town, across from the Greek Casino is the New Parthenon Restaurant. Not really "new" it has an old world character with a "hustle bustle" charm that makes you feel like you're a dinner guest at a Greek family's home. We sat in the back, upstairs which gave it a nice sense of privacy without feeling out of the action. I had the Greek combo of course to get a taste of the lamb, mousaka and dolmades. We also had the saganaki appetizer (flaming cheese dish. Yes, I'm a tourist), and a bit of the Greek wine and beer. The portions: enough for two sittings. Lot's of food! Yum.

Pretty stoked to be using the extra two hours before a flight out of D-town exploring the Greektown area. . . and even better eating fabulous Greek food instead of sub sandwiches in the airport. A quick guide to New Parthenon: 1. Get the lamb. The waiter will describe in detail how the 'meat falls off the bone. . . and no one makes it like we do!' My boyfriend gave in, and I was very jealous. . . good enough to make me admit that he was right (for once). 2. Start with the flaming cheese. Is there any way that cheese on fire can be a bad thing?

The Parthenon is a staple of Detroit's Greektown from decades ago. The traditional atmosphere combined with its moody lighting and closeness to Greentown Casino makes it one of the cities most popular restaurants. Anyone that has had a day in Detroit needs to check out this gem. The menu is a combination of traditional Greek cuisine with the occasional American-ized item (for the kids and tame adults). Like any good Greek restaurant, visitors love the saganaki (flaming cheese) appetizer. Be sure to watch the waiter yell "Opa!" as the cheese ignites. Lamb, beef, chicken, and vegetarian dinners are available. Its hard to bring a group here and not satisfy everyone. This place becomes insanely busy on the weekend. Its best to show up early and hit the casino later.

VERY disappointing - nothing to do with greek food at all - poor presentation - overloaded with fries - salty. Another tourist trap!

This restaurant is a must if you are a vegetarian stuck in downtown detroit. Which has been happening quiet frequently for me. Their veggie trio plate is amazing with more than enough food leftover for another meal. The greek coffee is super strong and bitter just like i like it and the waiter will even ask you how strong you want it. Service is super attentive. Only downside is if its late on a weekend you will come across many drunk tiger fans.

This review is only for the lamb dish I ordered. I went here yesterday around 5pm with a friend and ordered the gyro lamb dish, which about $11.00 a plate. The lamb was to die for. Just thinking about it, makes my mouth watery. I ate the lamb like it was steak, it was moist, tasty and not greasy. One of the best lamb dishes I have had.

Great lamb! Also the Rosa Marina was a pleasant change from the typical rice and the Jimmy's salad was amazing as well! It wasn't quite like going to New Helas (the original & best Greektown restaurant - RIP), but it beats anything at the casino!

I really did not want to go into this place because of the tacky lighting and signage outside which screams "Tourists Only", but went against my judgment. (They of course do the requisite saganaki - but I did not care to pay for the novelty of someone lighting food on fire and yelling "opa!".) I was pleasantly surprised. The place was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon save for one ginormous group so we were seated immediately. My mom was in town and jonesing for some lamb, so this fit the bill. The portions were very large and of the quality you would expect in Greektown - which is to say, pretty delicious. My father cannot eat tomatoes and ordered something that was drenched in tomato sauce. No problem, the staff swapped it out without incident. My mom and I were very pleased with our lamb dishes, which by now I have forgotten. I withheld the fourth star because I would have liked to seen slightly lower prices.

My favorite part of the place is the setting. I love going down into the cave that is the bar and getting served by Ted the bartender. He talks a lot but sometimes you only understand about half of it because of his accent, but it's part of his charm. Great spot to catch the Wings and Wings fans before and after the game. I also love the water features- the waterfalls over the greek statues right next to the bar. I alway have a blast there.

We have eaten at New Parthenon ever since Hellas closed. In the last three visits this year the quality has gone down. The reganato lacks the spice it used to have. We went two weeks ago during a busy time. The place was extremely dirty. The salad was not right but the waitress seemed indifferent. The lamb was tough. This weekend we tried Pegasus and found it better on all counts.

Whenever I'm near downtown Detroit I have to make the trip to the New Parthenon in Greektown. Located on the lively Monroe St. across from the Casino and Casino Hotel, this place knows how to make and serve greek food. The taramosalata, a dip of whipped caviar was light, fluffy and absolutely delicious on hard-crusted italian bread. Flaming saganaki-fun to watch but even better to eat. The Reganato-lamb baked in olive oil and oregano with rice and traditional green beans-wow! My fellow diner had the Spanakopita, Moussaka ans Patitso combo-3 different "greek lasagnas"-spinach, eggplant and macaroni. Huge portions you might want to split.

One of my favorite places for late night food. The hummus is great and the service is too. Great prices as well. Highly recommended. Though it was better before it switched owners and locations. Still a great stop.

Rarely do I honestly feel an establishment is 5 star worthy, but give it up for the downtown Parthenon because it is well deserved!! Hands down the best place to get really good authentic Greek food. I have tried the other establishments on the same strip but the Parthenon always beckons me. I am never, repeat NEVER disappointed with anything when I dine here. Service is always fast and expedient, especially when your on your way to a tiger or red wing game. The food consistently delicious, and not to mention the decor makes you feel like your in Greece. They have these huge murals on the walls with Greek columns and statues all over the place. It's gives the place a very nice touch, although some may argue it's a little gaudy. The Quality of the Kasseri cheese used for their saganaki is beyond comparison. The bread they serve, which by the way is never ending, is one of the best I've had. I wonder if they make it themselves? Be careful though, the bread is so good you might end up eating the whole basket before you know it. Trust me I've done it before. The Calamari is not the frozen variety, it's fresh, not excessively breaded and served with the tentacles and all... which I feel is the most flavorful part of the squid. The lamb in their souvlaki is seasoned and tender to perfection. The red tomato sauce which is served over the rice as well is wonderfully balanced... not too acidic nor salty, and compliments the juicy tender lamb perfectly. Now... I can't say the same for the other Parthenon locations because the other locations in my opinion are just glorified coney islands. It's as if they forgot they were originally a "strictly Greek" restaurant and started serving hot dogs, burgers and chicken strips w/ fries . Did they want to follow suit and turn into the next Leo's? So if you try Parthenon's food, take the time to go downtown. If you want coney island go to your local Leo's or something.

I would say this is just about the best Greek food you can get, along with the service. Most people in the area would agree, because often there is a line out the door, especially when there are events downtown, such as the auto show, a tiger game, wings game, etc. Fabulous fast service and wonderful food at reasonable prices. Just about the best vegetarian selection, too. I ordered the special salad (Greek salad hyped up a bit) and it was truly excellent---not just a Greek salad with a few beets, some feta and some olives, but lots mixed throughout--you will love it. More than enough for dinner. Hubby and son ordered Saganaki which for just about the same price in other coney restaurants gives you a much bigger and thicker slab o cheese. Rice pudding was custardy-good and huge--enough to share. Bread with dinner is fabulous, as well. Last time I went I ordered the vegetarian pastitso--thoroughly wonderful! Go with a good appetite and you won't leave hungry.

New Parthenon is a solid dining choice in the heart of Greektown. Whenever I visit my former home state of Michigan, I always take a trip down to Detroit to catch a Red Wings game and/or try my luck at the Greektown Casino. The night almost always starts off with some dinner and drinks at this longtime Greektown establishment. I have tried many of the items on their large menu, but have narrowed my favorites down to just a few items. To start the meal off, you must order the saganaki. This is a square of sizzling cheese (goat cheese maybe?) that is brought to your table, given a shot of oil and ignited by the waiter. As the flame shoots up, the waiter yells OPA!!! and you have now just taken part in a Greektown rite of passage. Dig right in to the still bubbling cheese and enjoy! I am a big moussaka fan and must say that I am not impressed by their moussaka. I was bummed out by the fact that I always had to order something besides my favorite Greek dish, moussaka, here since I didn't care for their version. That was until I came here once with a vegetarian friend and they ordered the vegetarian moussaka. I tried a bite and it was out of this world! So, believe it or not, my favorite all time dish here is actually the vegetarian moussaka. Excellent consistency and flavoring without that odd tanginess that turns me off in their meat version of the moussaka. I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but this vegetarian dish is great. I am also a fan of their lamb gyros. The meat is well seasoned and juicy and the toppings and pita are very fresh and tasty. The staff are always friendly and attentive. Last time I was here before a Red Wings game, they were offering free shuttles to and from Joe Louis Arena. If you play a lot at the Greektown Casino you can ask for and receive comped meals to this place. When in Greektown, be sure to stop in here and give this place a try.

Despite lifeless Saganaki Opah (no lemon flavor) and waitstaff who ignored us for 15-20 minutes on a slow night, the Stuffed Grape Leaves (4 good sized ones) took the meal over the hump. Piquant, slightly sweet and without rind bitterness I've experienced in other's, the lemon sauce perfectly set off the balanced, moderate, savory seasoning of tender meat in the leaves. My date said it's gone downhill since days past--but "still the best grape leaves in town." We'll try competing places next.

Four star food, three star service. We came in during Jazz Fest which was also post-Tigers game and holiday weekend, so needless to say it was probably busier than usual, but it still doesn't excuse what we witnessed. We'll start with upside - food. We were sat quickly and provided bread, which was "eh" and came with butter. The adults at the table had a bite but weren't dying for more but the kids at the table didn't seem to mind. Of course we had to have the flaming cheese with it which had the right consistency and saltiness, but lacked overall flavor. It tasted good on the bread but I fought for the "end" pieces which had a bit more char on them. We also got some olives as an appetizer and the plating could have used a major upgrade - it was more of just a few olives that were spooned out onto a big plate. But they were salty as expected with some nice spices mixed in. The adults all got traditional gyro plates which were excellent - soft bread that had a nice crisp to it with a large helping of lamb, although I could have used a bit more onions and tomatoes than were provided. A good helping of tzatziki sauce made my tastebuds sing and I was stuffed by the end of it. The kids had chicken fingers and french fries and they were happy, so not much to say there! So why the bump down for service? I agree, it was a busy, holiday, Jazz Fest, post-Tigers game night, but the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. We witnessed managers arguing back and forth with staff members on multiple occasions right in front of us (we sat near a computer/service station), staff members complaining very loudly, and employees who made it very clear they were not happy they were still there with managers who also made it clear that they weren't happy. The waiter at our table was friendly but didn't seem to remember things we requested and we had to ask multiple times or ask other waiters. Who knows, maybe I'll go back when it's not such an eventful day, but this experience was not enough to make me loyal to this particular restaurant.

Sigh. This place has slipped. Items on the menu not available at all hours, loads of oil dumped on everything, flat and pricey coffee. From the first to the last dish, have pride in what you serve. And if you can't, then change your hours.

Put a life-sized statue of Athena to proclaim victory over all other Greektown restaurants and I am so there. New Parthenon sings to the girl in me who went for a classics degree and knows whole stretches of the Odyssey, Iliad, and Herodotus by heart. TL;DR: I'm a Greco-Roman geek. New Parthenon isn't as swanky as Santorini down the street. Yes, the interior feels a bit aged around the booths. It delivers up big on food and heart, though. The servers are full of enthusiasm and float around, delivering up bread and shouting "Opa!" thirty times a day with no irony. It's fast delivery and deft juggling of spinning plates of gyros, salads, the odd omelet, and lamb on rice. What was your preference? The four pages of menu probably has every choice you might want. Sometimes it's just a bit overwhelming. When indulging yourself, explore. When in a rush, go for a classic and know you're going to be unsurprised in a good way. The classic and the village salads are exactly what you expect. No shocks in there. Additions of meat are on a scaling cost, so it's easy to customize one of these giant bowls into an even bigger meal. Maybe the Lions could individually eat a salad, but I have enough to share. On a sunny day, it's great to sit facing the window and watch all the people go by. On a rainy one, sip some tea or coffee and a bowl of soup to feel the stress slough off. I haven't ever seen upstairs opened up for dining but I typically come for lunch. I really do like the open, brighter tables if you can score one. There's all kinds of memorabilia on the walls, like a Detroit time capsule with a focus on sports. Food: no big surprises. It's good and hearty. Substitutions aren't a problem. The stir fry is the one dish I didn't like there because of the overly sweet sauce and a real lack of tartness in the veggies. But the salads are a favourite standby and the usual choice of fare. Piles and piles of bread flow by, and they're not that chewy sesame sort I find a challenge to gnaw on (and a reminder I shouldn't be eating bread).

Stopped in last week and all of Greek Town was slow or so I thought at the time. Came in here, with reservations. Escorted up the stairs, more stairs tried to sit the five of us at a table for four, not. Walked past a bunch of tables that would have worked and sat us down at a dirty table. After a few minutes we had silverware and water for three of us, not five. We stood up and walked out. Not very attentive and unkept

Greek food my ass. Where's the grilled octopus? Where's the guy named George bussing my damn table? This "best guess" Greek experience may work on the yokels trying to keep down the 13 cosmos they just slugged down at the casino, but get real dawg, this shit ain't fire and sure as shit ain't cheap enough in a town known for extreme lows. But hey, it was fast and I only feel a little sick so fuck it, roll those dice and give it a try if you find yourself legless and unable to walk across the street.

When I come in to eat I like to sit by the bar and I just order burgers and fries. Their bread is good just a lil hard. Love. Love love their chicken noodle soup which is only served on Mondays. But u know I'm there.

This is how Greek food should taste, at least in the U.S. Everything is on point. Gyro sandwich and vegetarian trio were amazing. I'd be hard pressed to eat anywhere else when in the area.

I really like this place. They have the best tzatziki sauce. Their pita bread is always fresh as well. My favorite is the chicken gyro with extra sauce. I also like to order the flavorful and generous portion of moussaka ( the equivalent of Greek meatloaf). Bartenders make pretty decent drinks. They don't have a huge selection of alcohol but have the basics and have a pretty stiff pour. One drawback may be the parking. I recommend either Valeting at Greektown casino or using their parking structure as it is hard to find parking on Monroe Street.

The food wasn't the best for the greek food, but it was pretty decent. The waiter seemed to not want to be there at all. He kept staring around not making eye contact with anybody at the table. When I paid the bill, I gave a $2.50 ish tip on the meal and wrote the total as well. Apparently that wasn't enough and did some "creative" reading and decided I wrote $7.50 instead as my bank statement revealed I gave $5 more. Very Shady. I always toss my receipts as proof of purchase because who really keeps them? I hope that $5 was worth me never coming back again with groups of people like I usually do. If you enjoy the food, bring cash. Unless of course you don't mind someone being "creative" on your receipt.

This restaurant was horrible. We ordered the filet we received something similar to a beat up piece of chuck roast. I asked for the manager and he was completely unprofessional and stated "maybe you just don't like it". Don't like it?? I don't like it when restaurants try to pass off a roast as a filet! Disgusting place--don't waste your money! I swear I think they use meat glue to piece cuts together--The meat is horrific!!

The food was really good and the portions were pretty large. Solid Greek food for sure. The service wasn't great but that would be my only knock on the place. Definitely a good meal at a fair price.

When we asked what was good that they recommend, we were told everything and the lamb was highly recommended. The lamb and veal were awful. The peas and string beans were over cooked and it seamed like they opened a can of tomato sauce that they poured on everything. On the bright side, they gave you lots of food. Unfortunately, you don't want to eat it.

Amazing food. We are here currently and there is a table of extremely loud people that keep on swearing and management doesn't care. People are complaining and keep getting moved and yet management doesn't say anything. Extremely unprofessional.

The food here was mediocre at best, flaming cheese was good chicken gyro was not bad, the bread fell apart and was not at all like the description. It took 20 min to get a refill and the table was filthy. We went with a big group and the server mixed up orders, added an extra meal and made us split the bill ourselves (we were a large party of 15). We actually sat there for a half hour splitting the bill because the server refused to and wouldn't go to the manager to do it for us. Once the splitting of bills was sorted, the server was nowhere to be found so we went up to the front to drop the bill off, and apparently 100$ "went missing" within the 10 steps it took to get the the register. None of the cards or 20 dollar bills went missing, but the 100$ did? Bullshit. One of the servers or manager himself must've snagged it while we turned around for making him take off the extra order. And on top of that he did nothing to compensate us for our wasted time and efforts. And we weren't about to make the server pay out of his own pocket. We had to pay the extra 100$ ourselves. Never thought a 115$ gyro could leave such a bad taste in my mouth. I've had better service at Taco Bell and better food. Never going there again.

Loved that we walked right in after a Lions game. Saganaki was delish and the group enjoyed their meals (either chicken or lamb gyros). Waiter had some issues splitting our bill/charging for things we didn't order, but aside from that (which he corrected), we enjoyed our meal.

The food is typically always fantastic. I love the Greek salads. The feta is the best! The chicken is moist and juicy. The Greek dressing is perfect. The gyro meat is well prepared. This is definitely a good place to grab a bite while in Greektown.
