Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I parked in the lot at the back of the building and didn't want to go inside. At the back of the building are the outdoor grills and the smell of that chicken was unbelievable!!! The Polo el Carbon might be the messiest chicken I've ever had, but it was delicious. It comes with pinto beans, rice and flour tortilla's as well as chips and salsa. For $7 you can beat this lunch.

I ate there today and my glass had a dirty dish rag shoved in the bottom of it , sadly I discovered it after I ate my meal , they refused to give me a refund , I threw up all my lunch I was so disgusted , the cleanliness of the restaurant sucks , I would deff not go here , I'm making a call to the health dept and disputing the charges to my credit card. I'm disgusted beyond belief.

A hidden gem off the beaten path near Mexican town. We found Los Corrales. Just a few blocks from Vernor Highway, on the corner of Junction and Toledo streets, you will find this place. There are two dining areas, one near the kitchen and a separate, slightly more formal section of booths. Every meal starts with a complimentary bowl of tortilla chips alongside a plate of condiments including sliced radish, lime wedges, a chunky, fresh tomato salsa, a green, tomatillo-based salsa with a bit of heat and our favorite and spiciest of the three, the roasted tomato salsa. When we pulled up in the parking lot, they had a huge grill and cooking on it. It smelled wonderful. My friend had the Menudo (tripe Soup) . He said it was good but lacking a lot of tripe in it. He did love the taco's. The meat had a wonderful flavor and very tender. I had the fajitas. I had a mix of steak, chicken and shrimp. It definitely tasted like it just came off the grill. The seasoning was perfect and the meal was big enough to bring home for lunch the next day. The wait staff was friendly and excellent service. The Con's, when you order pop, it comes out of a can, so you would need to pay for a refill. The back door of the place was left open and we had a few flies hanging with us during our meal. LOL Over all the food tasted homemade and fresh. The prices are the same as Mexican town restaurants. About $8 to $10 a meal. I will definitely be back.

Just tried out this restaurant while on my way back home. Ordered the burritos with carne asada as take out. When I got back home and bit into the burrito, I was surprised how GOOD it tasted. My dining partner was also impressed. Definitely have to try this place out!

MUY Delicioso! We were cheerfully greeted upon entering. They sat us in a booth and already I knew this was going to be a great experience, we were the only English speaking people (*ahem* Gringos) in the place... We ordered Horchatas (a wonderful cinnamon, milk and rice drink) and the waitress promptly brought us freshly made tortilla chips on a tray with 3 salsas some horseradish and limes. The salsas were so tasty. I loved the verde and I usually don't go for mild salsa- but theirs had a nice onion-y tangy taste. For lunch, I couldn't resist the Tacos al Pastor. They immediately passed the authenticity test: 2 soft corn tortillas per taco and sprinkled with fresh cilantro and onion. The dish came with rice and beans on the side and roasted pepper and onion. The taco was pretty top notch, although the red Pastor sauce was a bit overly salty and I ended up adding salsa verde to it to add spice and tone down the salt. Taqueria Mi Pueblo had better Pastor sauce. There, it didn't need anything extra...but it was also more greasy than the tacos at Los Corrales. The rice and beans here far out shined that of Taqueria Mi Pueblo so...they evened each other out in my mind. You win some, you lose some. Overall, great lunch experience. I'd recommend Los Corrales to anyone looking for a classic Mexican taco experience. ***CASH ONLY!***

Authentic Mexican food. Better than the more touted Mexican town hangouts, besides maybe lupitas. They have real refried beans, although the rice might not be seasoned as well as some would prefer. Only thing is you don't get free refills, so that sucks, but as far as the food goes. Awesome. Nice servings, and the prices aren't outrageous. They have the grill going in the back, so most of the time you're getting fresh meat. Mexican shrimp cocktail is delicious, and as good as you'll get south of the border. If you want real Mexican food this is the place.

Stopped in for a quick lunch on the way to the Honeybee Market. Nice place off the main drag. Had guisado de puerco, pork in a green sauce of tomatillo and chiles. Dish was great. The tortillas seemed super fresh - had a very distinct corn flavor and aroma; more so than usual. No lack of lard here. Nice array of salsas, limes and radishes served with chips. They had a special of tamale and champurrado (chocolate atole) which I'll try next time. Also tacos need to be tried. Plenty of on-street parking in front. Good waitstaff. I was the only non-spanish speaker in the place.

Great Authentic Mexican food! The best I've had in a while... When we sat down, they quickly gave us fresh chips and salsa, as well as a variety of different sauces, limes, and radishes to go with. I ordered the chicken chimichangas and my boyfriend ordered the chicken enchiladas. Both were excellent choices. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. I would also highly recommend the guacamole. Our server was nice and prompt. Overall, excellent meal, and will be sure to visit again.

Los Corrales is a great Mexican restaurant in Detroit. Their rice is soft and fluffy, and their tortillas are made fresh to order. Their caldo is excellent if it is a cold day or you're feeling sick, it has cured many an illness. I believe that all Mexican restaurants should be judged by their salsa, and while I don't care for their salsa verde, the other salsa is flavorful and spicy. If you are looking for an excellent taqueria look no further!

So it's finally here... my first one star review. I was beyond excited to go to Los Corrales because of the rave reviews it received from my fellow yelpers, but it was an uber-letdown. At first glance, it seemed exciting. We came in the back door from the parking lot and made our way through a maze of doors, past some cute bathrooms and through a billiards area, where several men were partaking in libations and shooting some pool. "Neat!", we thought. We found our way to the restaurant portion and were told to sit anywhere. The parking lot was full, so we were surprised at how few people were actually in there. I think there may have been another room beyond where we were. Things started off well with our waitress bringing us the chips and salsa tray and waters, but soon the veil was lifted and it went downhill from there. The chips were fine, nothing special, but the salsas were not. The tomatillo was interesting, only because I had not been served it anywhere other than Chipotle, but very sour. The mild was blah and the hot? The hot was not good. It was very vinegar-y or something that made it mega bitter and sour. The only thing I enjoyed from the tray were the fresh sliced radishes. One star had already come off at this point. Then it came time to order. Oh boy. We excitedly looked through the menu, knowing we were going to get three tacos each, but just having to decide which ones. When we found the taco section, we saw something astounding. It said $1.00 extra for cheese! $1.00!!!! So, I asked the waitress, is that $1.00 per taco? And she laughed and said yes. Um. Not funny, chica. I told her that was crazy, and she just laughed. Well, I wasn't about to not have cheese on my tacos, so I ordered up three (pastor, chorizo, carne asada) and a side of rice and beans. I asked her how much the rice and beans were and at first she said she didn't know and then eventually asked if I wanted her to go ask. Um. Yes. So, then I asked her if there was a taco dinner (cause there wasn't one on the menu) to see if I could save some money and she didn't know that either, but then tried to explain it in a totally complicated way that not only bored me, but didn't help me at all because the way she described it, I would still have to pay $4 extra dollars (on top of the "like $7") to have cheese on each of the four tacos that come with the dinner. Really? Another star goes. I should mention here that the service was painfully slow all the way around. The waitress spent more time chatting/flirting with a young man at another table (not dining) than serving the three tables that were actually there to eat. It was a chore to get her attention just to ask for utensils, and then we waited at least 5 minutes to receive them. In addition to that, I had to ask for more water after my glass sat at the edge of the table, completely empty, for a good 10 minutes or more. Another star goes. On to the food. First of all, the cheese that I was told I had to pay $1.00 per taco extra for amounted to less than a tbsp of cheese per taco. Ugh. The tacos were okay, but nothing special. The chorizo was the most disappointing, as it was kind of dry and not very salty (so really, not very chorizo-y at all), and both the chorizo and carne asada had a lemony taste to the meat, that I didn't enjoy. Definitely not lime, but a citrus taste seasoning the meat. I don't know if there is some spice that has such a citrus taste, but I didn't like it. The pastor didn't have that lemony taste, but it was pretty grissly. The beans and rice were fine (the rice was better than the beans, but neither compared to other places). I did like the corn tortillas (fresh and flavorful) and the roasted jalapeno and onion that were included on the plate, just cause it was different, but it wasn't enough to save them from losing another star here. We then had to ask for our bill twice, and when we eventually got it, it was TOTALLY wrong. Fortunately, it was wrong in our favor, so we paid it and got out of there, still leaving her a decent tip all things considered. So, since there is no way I will ever go back there, it was likely the worst service I have ever had, AND the food was mediocre at best (some bordered on bad), they get my first one-star review. I'm sad that it's going to a Mexican restaurant, but it's warranted. And, as always, I feel like I've missed out on something since other people seem to like it so very much.

Now I have a dilemma! Senor Lopez was my go to place for wonderful authentic tacos. Last night I discovered Los Corrales. The taco dinner was everything and more. I had the chicken and my son had steak, chicken and pork. We were both in heaven. The dinner came with 4 unbelievable tacos with onion and cilantro rice and beans. My husband had the chicken Fajita dinner which was also very yummy. His only complaint was it was lacking in peppers and onions. Oh and I cannot forget the great trio of salsa that came with the chips along with radishes and lime. So you may ask why not five stars. well they do not have beer and while the beans were great they were refried. Senior Lopez does have beer and their pintos are whole which I prefer. So I need Los Corrales tacos and Senior Lopez's beer and beans. What to do?

A little bit off the main strip in Mexicantown, Los Corrales has given me hope. I moved to Detroit from LA in February of this year and had nearly given up hope to find a Mexican restaurant that can satiate my need for burritos and tacos. But Detroit has never failed to amaze me, from the desolation that is the majority of downtown, to the gauntlet of homeless people walking in the middle of Woodward(WTF? Crosswalk much?), now there is finally a Mexican joint that is worthy of my pretentious stomach. They start you off with a huge tray of chips, salsa, onions, and radishes(to cool the burn) which is great. After eating only the carne asada and the al pastor, I would be sure to try almost anything else form the deep selection on the menu. The place was decorated in a kinda southwestern theme, the booths were spacious and the service was good too. Only downside was that they only accept cash, so come prepared. They even have a game room connected to the dining room where, if you're brave enough, you could play some pool against some of the local patrons. Probably not the best idea if you don't speak spanish, just get the food. Finally a Mexican restaurant with authentic cuisine in Detroit. Although Mexican food in theory is not hard to make, I mean the ingredients are readily available, but some how the authenticity of a place takes a horrible turn for the worst when it's located in the midwest. Not at Los Corrales. This was true Mexican food.
